Learning Lunch series is back for 2021-22 The annual Lincoln Public Schools Learning Lunch series is back after a year off and this year it will be virtual! The next presentation will be Wednesday, Dec. 15. Each monthly Learning Lunch this school year will typically be held on the third Wednesday of the month (full schedule below). It can be accessed on the front page of LPS.org shortly before the beginning of the program.

The presentations begin at noon, with questions-and-answers at roughly 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 23 “Sustainability at LPS: Connecting Facilities, Students, and Community Through Climate Action” Learn about the LPS Sustainability Programs that are supporting green school initiatives in the areas of waste, energy, water, transportation and air quality. LPS Sustainability Coordinator Brittney Albin will show how there are plenty of ways to get involved at our schools, just in time for Earth Day in April.

With the ever-changing demographics within Lincoln Public Schools, currently serving students and families representing 152 countries and speaking 130 languages, LPS must be ready to provide language and cultural support. A panel of LPS Bilingual Liaisons representing seven of the major ethnic groups in this community will provide a glimpse into their roles and responsibilities when working with immigrant and refugee families.

Follow the experience of LPS children and youth as they navigate the homeless experience while trying to attend school. Ellen Reilly from LPS Homeless Services will examine the McKinney-Vento Act and how LPS addresses the needs of over 300 students and their families who experience homelessness and how you can help to support and identify those students and those at risk.

As is tradition, the final Learning Lunch of the school year will feature student music. This year it will be the Lincoln Youth Symphony as it celebrates its 65th anniversary. LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen and the symphony’s director, Clark Potter, will provide the rich history of the symphony and the program will feature a live student performance.

In the wake of the pandemic, science has certainly been put under the microscope. Engage in an activity with LPS Science Curriculum Specialist Betsy Barent that will deepen your understanding about what science is and what it isn't - and you’ll have some fun, too!

November TeamMates of the Month

Allie and Kayla: A connection built to last Lincoln Northeast senior Allie will graduate next month, completing a journey she has traveled with her TeamMate Kayla for the past nine years.

Their near-decade of weekly visits has built “a lot of trust,” says Allie, “Trust and learning that relationships aren’t going to come and go, they are going to last.”

Kayla explains she did not do anything specific to earn Allie’s confidence besides respect her privacy. “I would ask questions about her day or her week. I left it up to her to talk to me about what she wanted to, versus prying and asking a lot of personal questions,” she remembers. “Which I think got us to where we’re at today, letting her share what she wants to share.”

When they were initially matched at Humann Elementary, they chose activities to guide their visits naturally. “Because of her age, she was quiet and a little shy,” recalls Kayla. “When we first started, Allie really loved to do crafts and activities, so I’d bring something every week for us to do together.” At Pound Middle School, they enjoyed mancala, cards and ping pong.

“Once she got into high school, it was more just sitting in the media center talking, and we got away from the games and stuff at that point.”

“It’s something I wait for throughout the week, like ‘It’s not Wednesday yet, it’s not Wednesday yet,” says Allie, who attributes her expanded maturity to enabling more dialogue between them. “And trusting and opening up more,” adds Kayla, “I count on the meetings every week just as much as she does, I think.”

“We had to build our connection and learn to trust and know the things we could open up about,” says Allie. Allie finds Kayla’s understanding and supportive nature has assured her over

She finds Kayla’s input guides her without imposing. “She’s not like, ‘do this and don’t do this.’

More like, ‘I’d recommend doing this, but it’s your choice of what you feel like you should do,’” which Allie finds empowering.

Kayla adds, “I want her to know she’s able to stand up for herself and to help her learn she has those strengths.”

“I took the advice,” Allie says, “and it actually ended

up helping me a lot and it worked out very well.”

Soon, Allie will begin studying at Southeast Community College in pursuit of a career in computer science. Allie and Kayla are looking forward to being able to keep in touch outside of a school building and grabbing lunch when their match closes after graduation.

Kayla is excited to see Allie continue to grow. “I think when she finds the classes that really interest her, she will stay self-motivated, and I think she will do great and find the career choice she wants,” says Kayla. “I’m excited to see what she finds to do that’s the right fit for her.”

Calvert art teacher honored as state’s best Calvert Elementary School teacher Amy Allerheiligen was honored with the 2020 Nebraska Art Teachers Association Elementary Art Educator of the Year Award.

“Of the 300-plus students at Calvert, Amy takes the time to get to know each child by name, and works to learn unique and special things about our children,” Brehm said. “Whether on the playground supervising recess or during art class, Amy spends time talking to children to learn about who they are as people. I see her finding ways that allow children to express their unique personalities in their art at school.”

Allerheiligen said the award came at the perfect time in fall 2020, when she was feeling anxiety and stress about going back to in-person learning.

“Winning this award not only helped bring some joy and celebration into my life at a challenging time, but also made me want to continue to share my passion for art with my students, and to show them how the act of simply creating can help get them through the challenges that they may be facing themselves,” she said. “Winning this award was a wonderful reward for all my hard work and effort over the years, and I am grateful for it, but knowing that each day I come to school I have the chance to bring a small amount of joy into the life of even just one of my students is worth so much more.”

Robert Goldberg, education and community engagement manager for the Lincoln Arts Council, also has worked closely with Allerheiligen.

Calvert Principal Jeff Brehm spoke glowingly of Allerheiligen in his nomination letter for the award, talking about the “love and care” she has for students.

“Everything in her room is conducive to learning, from the ambient music upon entering, to the lighting, to the system of communicating with her and each other,” he said. “Students of every type are engaged as much as possible. Respect is encouraged.”

She also was recently honored with a formal resolution at a Lincoln Board of Education meeting.

Southwest yearbook named best in the state The Nebraska High School Press Association (NHSPA) has honored the Lincoln Southwest High School yearbook staff with the Cornhusker Award for their 2020-21 edition of “The Talon.”

The presentation was made Oct. 18 at the NHSPA Fall Convention, held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Cornhusker Award is the highest honor for high school yearbooks in Nebraska. It’s awarded to schools whose publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production - concept, coverage, writing, design and photography. Yearbooks that receive the award effectively integrate all areas of emphasis to give readers a complete record and documentation of the academic school year.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Southwest has been honored with the Cornhusker Award.

"I feel proud to know that we won a Cornhusker because it's proof that all the hard work we put in is worth it," yearbook editor senior Olivia Ulrich said. "It's rewarding to know that our work is officially recognized."

Ulrich and 18 other student journalists created the chronological, 260-page yearbook titled “All Over the Place,” along with a 40-page supplement highlighting the spring. With a hybrid schedule for the first half of the 2020-21 school year, staff

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Garden Gathering:

Engaging students through the winter Each quarter, LPS Sustainability teams up with community partners to host a School Garden Gathering. In November, LPS Sustainability partnered with Beyond School Bells to offer another opportunity for school garden advocates to connect and explore garden and outdoor learning engagement over the winter. Over 40 participants attended, including teachers, parents, CLC staff and community partners. The event was held at The Bay, which provided the perfect opportunity to explore year-round gardening at the Freight Farm Greenery.

The Freight Farm Greenery is an indoor, aeroponic garden utilized by multiple community members, including the LPS Independence Academy, for hands-on education. Dakota Staggs with Beyond School Bells provided tours to Garden Gathering attendees and answered questions about the farm and the plans to expand its outreach in the future. The other portion of the event was led by Miki Montgomery, a local tower garden extraordinaire.

Montgomery demonstrated the ease of putting together an indoor tower garden and what kind of curriculum can be taught alongside indoor gardening and the nutritional benefits of gardening. Attendees were able to see how to set up water pumps, build a tower garden, plant seeds in the tower and options for engaging students with the entire process. During the gathering, LPS Sustainability also unveiled the updated School Garden Manual, which holds information necessary to plan, start and maintain a school garden at an LPS site. Additional resources for winter gardening lessons and activities were also made available to attendees.

These garden gatherings offer a setting for school garden and outdoor learning advocates to connect, learn and build a network of support. If you are interested in helping grow outdoor or indoor garden learning spaces at LPS sites, please reach out to your nearby school and ask how you can get involved or contact the Sustainability Team at sustainability@lps.org.

Lincoln’s two new high schools will join Eastern Midlands Conference Eastern Midlands Conference (EMC) voted at its meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 10, to add Lincoln’s two newest high schools - Northwest and Standing Bear - to its conference. Lincoln Northwest High School will officially join and participate in conference activities upon the school’s opening in August 2022. Standing Bear High School will open and begin competing the following year (August 2023).

“We believe Lincoln Northwest and Standing Bear will be an ideal fit for our conference,” said EMC President and Blair Community Schools Superintendent Randy Gilson. “They exemplify the same high values for academics and sportsmanship and encourage participation in fine arts, activities, and athletics.”

The Eastern Midland Conference began in 1980.

Member schools are Bennington, Blair, Elkhorn, Elkhorn North, Norris, Waverly, and now Lincoln Northwest and Standing Bear high schools.

“We are excited and honored to be included in a highly competitive conference that exemplifies our mission and ideals of aiding in the

enrollment in Lincoln grows. This classifies the new high schools as Class B under the Nebraska School Activities Association bylaws. The NSAA classifies schools based on enrollment in grades 9-11, and are re-evaluated every two years.

Wieskamp added, “Starting in Class B will be important for the development and safety of our students, and allow the programs to be competitive as they continue to grow.”

Northwest High School reveals uniforms, song On Wednesday, Nov. 17, the administrative team at Lincoln Northwest High School had the first glimpse of the marching band uniforms students will perform in next fall. Featuring the school's colors of purple, white, and gray, the uniforms come complete with a waist sash, a hat donning the school logo and removable gauntlets for the jacket sleeves. The hat also comes with a separate hat wrap and a gray and white plume to top it off.

Also making its debut on Wednesday was the Lincoln Northwest High School "flight song.” With music by Nolan Schmit and lyrics by Rob Salistean, the song is two verses full of Falcon pride. The tune makes a slight nod to the U.S. Air Force song, in honor of the Lincoln Air Force Base that was once housed in northwest Lincoln, and features a rising melody to parallel the soaring Falcons. The community will be able to hear the song played and sung on the field and in the stands come fall of 2022, when Northwest opens.

Building/Department: Moore Middle School Teaching Assignment/Role: 7th- and 8th-grade Spanish teacher Why did you want to become an educator? I love education, it is a life of transmitting your teachings and at the same time continuously learning and recycling from and with your students. This work can positively affect the lives of many students.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? I love the community I am in. We take care of all students without leaving any behind - no matter their ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or language. We believe in diversity and we support it. There is also a lot of cooperation between the teachers.

Where did you attend college? The University of Valencia in Spain What is your favorite part of being an educator? Laughing with my students, seeing them enjoying the class and being successful.

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students. I know that some students have continued learning Spanish as a minor in the university after having classes with me. Some are also interested in knowing Spain and more about the culture of the country.

Building/Department: Park Middle School Teaching Assignment/Role: 6-8th grade FCS teacher Why did you want to become an educator? I knew I wanted to teach FCS since I was a sophomore in high school! I grew up watching and getting to know my middle and high school FCS teachers, and I completely adored them. They were my role models at school and were teachers that I knew would always be able to help me with anything. I knew I loved helping others and always liked the idea of teaching, so FCS seemed perfect! I only toured and applied at UNL because I knew exactly what I wanted was to be in the FCS Ed program and teach in LPS! What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? I love getting to know my students, supporting them at school, and attending their sporting events. Seeing them excited in class when they're learning life-long skills is the best.

What is your favorite part of being an educator? Seeing kids happy in my classroom and excited to learn is the best part. Getting to see former students in the hallway is wonderful too because it warms my heart that they are so excited to see me. It makes everything worth it!

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students. I always start my quarter with having my students fill out an information form so that I can get to know my students on a personal level and have background on them and their life outside of school. First quarter I had a student leave a comment on it thanking me for asking these questions and that it meant a lot to them that I wanted to help them and know about their struggles. Any letters from current or past students remind me that I am leaving a positive impact on them.

What is a fun fact about you? In LPS, I have worked in an elementary, middle and high school!

Why did you want to become an educator? Teaching has always been in my blood - many of my relatives are teachers and I feel drawn to the classroom as a place where I can have a positive impact on the world.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? So far, I love the students more than anything else. There are so many great kids at Bryan, as there are in other buildings, that make this job so rewarding.

Where did you attend college? University of Nebraska-Lincoln What is your favorite part of being an educator?

Again, what I love about teaching is the relationships we create with our communities. I love being in a position to help others on a daily basis. It helps me feel like I am making a difference in this complicated world.

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students. The perk of being a transgender teacher is that I am able to help others figure out aspects of their identities. It can be really isolating as a trans person to not have any adults like you to look up to, so I'm glad I can be that person for my students.

What is a fun fact about you? I'm allergic to fruit!

Lux honored as National Blue Ribbon School

Lux Middle School has been named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Lux joins 325 schools from across the country, ranging from pre-K to high school, that are being recognized for their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Lux was formally honored in November at a formal ceremony in Washington, D.C. The coveted Blue Ribbon award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.

“It’s not only about our achievements in the classroom and with student scores,” said Lux Principal Duane Dohmen, who has been at Lux since 2014. “It’s also about the culture we’ve created here at Lux, a culture that not only promotes academic excellence but stresses positive relationships, diversity and making responsible choices.”

Lux joins seven other schools from Lincoln Public Schools to have received the award since 1982: Pyrtle Elementary (2020), Rousseau Elementary (2018), Riley Elementary (2011), Norwood Park Elementary (2012), Southeast High School (1988), Lincoln East Junior and Senior High School (1983), and Lincoln High School (1983).

“As a Blue Ribbon School, Lux joins an elite group of schools in the country,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel. “They’re now one of a number of LPS schools that have won this award, which reflects the excellent teaching and learning that takes place across the district. It’s the hard work and dedication of Principal Dohmen, staff and students that has made this possible. All of LPS is incredibly proud of this honor they’ve so deservedly earned.”

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates.

Lux received the Exemplary High Performing School award. Schools in this category are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

“There could not be a school more deserving of this honor,” said LPS Associate Superintendent for Instruction Matt Larson. “Principal Dohmen and his staff have created a learning environment that not only pushes students to reach their full potential in academics but also in life beyond the classroom by providing the tools and support they need to thrive.”

LPS announces Robinson Elementary principal Lincoln Public Schools announced that Jeff Vercellino, current Cavett Elementary School principal, will serve as the first principal of the new Ada Robinson Elementary School located in northeast Lincoln. Opening in the fall of 2022, the school was named for the long-time LPS educator known for building relationships and serving multiple generations of students.

LPS Superintendent Steve Joel said he is excited for Vercellino and the opportunity to open the newest LPS elementary school in northeast Lincoln.

“Like Robinson who prides herself on building lasting relationships with her students, Jeff is a proven instructional leader who values nurturing meaningful relationships with staff, students and families,” added Joel. “Robinson Elementary students will benefit from his passion to see each and every student grow and succeed.”

“I am elated to have the opportunity to serve as the first principal of Ada Robinson Elementary,” Vercellino said. “Mrs. Robinson is an inspirational educator. One who genuinely cared for, respected, and connected with all students she came into contact with. I look forward to col-

laborating with Mrs. Robinson and her family as we carry on her legacy in northeast Lincoln.”

Vercellino has been the principal at Cavett for the last 10 years. He served as Hartley Elementary School’s principal from 2007-2012 after being the assistant principal at Cavett from 2003-2007.

Seven simple holiday season food tips

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Food costs have recently increased. So how do you make your holiday food dollars go further?

Beware the free sample. Why do businesses give out free samples? Because it helps hungry shoppers increase impulse-buying of items.

Often, if they give you a cookie or drink, you feel obligated to purchase something, or in grocery stores to purchase the item you are sampling. It also adds to holiday calories for you - which is likely not the gift you have on your list.

Pay close attention to the times you shop. If you are shopping when hungry, tired or stressed, the chances you will impulse buy extra items increases. If there is more than one shopper in your house, have the person shop who is most likely to stick to the list, or go together to help keep each other accountable - when you are full and feeling the best.

Keep waste and food costs at a minimum by shopping a couple times per week. In Lincoln, food ads are published on Wednesdays and weekends. Use those ads to do mini meal plans, building in what is in season and at the best prices. If you only purchase two or three days’ worth of food, you will greatly decrease the amount of food you lose to the “Crispers of Doom.” We all tend to over-purchase if trying to buy for a week at a time or longer.

Use early veggie and fruit preps to your advantage. If you simply cut up an apple or pull out a veggie tray first when starting to prep a meal, you can keep the nibbling to healthier items that don’t cost much or add to your waistline. It’s also a great habit to teach your kids. In effect, you are serving their fruits and veggies as an appetizer. It

also keeps you from accidentally snacking on the meal items or other pricey snack items.

Just for the holiday season, consider skipping the fries or soft drinks when on the run.

Though this is always helpful, it is especially so during the holidays, when extra costs and calories are everywhere. By just choosing the entrée, sandwich or salad and pairing it with water (or milk), you can benefit in every way. If you are doing take away and need a bit more, pair the main item with a healthy side from home for added cost savings.

Soup up your meal plans. No matter if you make soup on your own or add some items to a pre-made soup, you can have an inexpensive meal. Soups are a great way to use up those little bits and bobs of leftovers or finish off those bags of frozen veggies. Soups stretch your food dollar, so keep experimenting with different combina-

tions and spices to keep it interesting. Consider using a mix of stock and broth, or regular- and low-sodium broth to keep the sodium levels reasonable while still tasty. Some families find using soups as their holiday gathering food to be a great success - and it cuts costs too. If you are having a “soup off ” competition within families, using little muffin pans can be a great way to try several different soups side by side.

Choose the best, leave the rest. As a registered dietitian for the past 25+ years, this has consistently been my approach. When it comes to shopping, food prepping or eating, there will likely be far many more options presented than you need to fuel your body. When you do have a choice, choose the best options you have - for health, for cost and for flavor. If we do this and teach our kids to do the same, we will all have much brighter and healthier futures.

Ways to make the holidays cost less and mean more

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Hopefully one of the silver linings of these past two years is giving ourselves permission to own our choices. As we roll into the complex world of managing the holidays, take the reins of your plans and feel better about your choices that can truly make the season bright.

Consider shifting the focus from “stuff” to shared experiences. If you are feeling overwhelmed by all of the items you have amassed over time, think about an early chat with your family about focusing the holidays on doing more together and less shopping. Build a list of fun activities (some free and some low cost) and pick a few to do over the next few weeks. It could also include doing some volunteer activities to help remind your kids what they have. Doing for others feels great and can be a bonding activity with your crew.

If your extended family is filled with strife and creates high levels of stress for you and your kids, consider opting for a few smaller visits

with family who are local prior to the holiday events. Is it possible to skip the big event and go out for a coffee meeting with those in from out of town the day prior or day after?

Realistically, you can’t always do this, but is it worth exploring? Would you have more quality discussions with family members if you make this choice? Less stress on you and the kids? Just one more option to consider. Imagine a peaceful holiday at home, while still managing to connect with all of those people you want to see, while skipping the fighting and angst. It could be the ultimate gift.

Start early in setting family spending limits where you have a say. If you have a large family and need to be part of a bigger event, think about doing a smaller gift-steal type of game with a lower gift price instead of gifts for everyone. Pulling gift names out of a hat and/or settting upfront price limits can help you budget and be more successful at staying within your boundaries.

Consider setting new family traditions that help you create limits for yourself. Some fam-

ilies do a book-toy-clothing combo, where kids (and potentially adults) keep the holidays simple with limiting family spending to three items.

Likely they may be receiving gifts from others, so it can make those gifts meaningful and avoid the “stuff ” focus. If your family is trying to cut costs or just live more simply, it can be a winning formula for both. Early communication is key to making this work if you have previously run wild with purchases. Your credit cards will thank you.

If money is tighter than ever, consider opting out of those pricey but less meaningful exchanges. Activities such as secret Santa or work gift exchanges can add to the cost of holidays. Just be politely up front about your choices so that you don’t end up in an awkward receiving without giving situation.

Take heart in realizing the world is a bit different place these days. You have never been more empowered to be yourself and make the best choices for you and your family. With a little preparation and early notice to those you love, you could find yourself having one of your most meaningful holiday seasons yet.

Six solutions for beating winter challenges

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness If the holidays have traditionally been a tough time for your family, now may be the perfect time to seek some support for you or for your family.

First, take care of your health - and theirs.

If you’ve put off finding a health provider (also referred to as a medical home) this would be the time. If you haven’t been to see your provider, you might find winter is a good time for your adult annual physical or other health exams.

Spring and summer are filled with student school physicals for providers, so knock out those personal health visits now. Be sure to include your mental as well as physical health as part of your discussion during this visit. Especially these past two years, providers realize how this is impacting the health of their clients and they’re offering support. Don’t miss this opportunity to take care of you, both mind and body, so you can be there for them.

Connect with meaning. For each of us, this might look different. It could mean volunteering, reading meaningful books, focus activities, art, writing or journaling, connecting with a faith community, etc. Sometimes we lose our center and need to put energy toward those activities that bring us back to finding ourselves.

Start working your way back to better movement habits. Over these past two years, much of our ability to be out and about has been restricted unless you spend a lot of time outdoors. This might be the right time to reclaim your energy through a bit more movement - indoors or outdoors. There is no “right” way to get moving, other than whatever the activity is you are exploring to start slowly and build gradually to higher intensity or longer lengths of time being active. Too much too soon can be a recipe for injury and quickly kill your excitement for movement with extreme soreness. Little steps can do much for building you into a better habit.

Boost your dopamine by bumping up an ordinary routine. Part of what drives the winter blahs is lack of variety. Dopamine is part of our brain chemistry that goes with excitement over novelty. It could be trying a new flavor or spice, a new dance, wearing bright colors or a pair of silly socks. We all benefit from taking a bit of monotony out of our routine and mixing it up a bit. You might notice schools having some theme/spirit days during this time of year and it is a way of engaging students in school - yep, dopamine. Do what you can to help your student take part, as it’s great for kicking out the winter blahs.

Soak up some Vitamin D. As our days become shorter, so does our natural window to get Vitamin D from the sun, which can greatly impact

our moods. When you have a chance, dress in layers, bundle up and get out into the daylight. Do the same for your student. One of our best resources for Vitamin D beyond sunlight is drinking milk, which adults do less and fortunately kids get with their breakfasts and lunches and afterschool program snacks at school.

Ideally, students should be having three to four servings per day. Vitamin D is added to milk and alternative beverages, as it helps our bodies absorb calcium. Please note, if you are using nondairy milk alternatives, it’s important to shake the drinks well, as the nutrients that are added to mimic those in dairy/milk settle to the bottom of containers and are found to be frequently missed.

Seek help for you and/or your students. LPS recognizes the challenges faced by students and families are very real. Please keep an open line of communication with your school supports: teachers, counselors, social workers, administrators and more. You and your student are not alone in facing challenges. We can better support your student if we understand the challenges they are facing and sometimes students are less than forthcoming about these issues. The sooner we know about issues, the earlier we can help and prevent issues from becoming problems.

Cut the morning chaos Good Health is a Family Affair

For most of us, every minute from waking up to school arrival is valuable.

One or two snafus can throw off your rhythm and add stress to your day.

What can make the difference for your family routine? Consider using some of these step-savers to cut corners and keep the morning smooth.

Have a routine parent check-in time with kids each afternoon or evening. Specifically ask about special projects, if they need anything signed and jointly look at Synergy to see if anything is missing or coming due.

This can help both you and your student avoid any surprises and schedule time for upcoming projects. Especially if your student has sports/music/ arts events beyond the school day, this can be a difference maker.

Pack up early and make a spot. If backpacks, Chromebook charger outlets, lanyards, water bottles, sports bags and musical instruments can all find a joint home, it can greatly prevent any elements from being forgotten.

Be sure any hats/gloves/coats/boots also live in one spot for easy departure.

Even if it’s as simple as a cardboard box or a more formal cubby, keeping these elements together and easy to find can simplify life.

Have one or two full outfits ready. Indecision about what to wear can be a huge stumbling block to getting out the door. Laying out all of the elements of an outfit the night before, down to the socks and shoes, makes a difference. If you or your student likes to have a couple options ready for morning choice, it will keep choices limited and streamlined.

Give devices a strict bedtime and sleep them in a parent protected area. Devices are robbing our kids of meaningful sleep time and make mornings much more challenging. Truly be firm with this one and it will have huge returns in lessening morning chaos.

Have you noticed a trend here? Cutting chaos is largely about preparation and routine. Kids (and adults) feel better with a little more of both. “Next morning you” will thank “Tonight you” for making it happen. So will your kids.

LPS honors veterans at schools

LPS celebrated Veterans Day on Nov. 11 with activities and programs across the school district. There were guest veteran speakers, live patriotic music, displays that honored veteran staff members - even a "sweat for a vet" P.E. activity at Randolph Elementary School. This followed the Nov. 7 Lincoln Veterans Day Parade, where four LPS high school marching bands performed.

Campbell first-grader launches business, fourth-graders learn from his experience A first-grader at Campbell Elementary School started his own business last summer picking up dog poop for people in the neighborhood.

He made shirts with his business’s logo. He went door to door with a sales pitch and a flyer. This fall, a fourth-grade teacher at Campbell has incorporated the story of this young entrepreneur into part of her reading curriculum that covers business.

Here’s the poop scoop: Six-year-old Wyatt Cogley wanted to buy a coveted gaming device last summer - but it cost a lot of money. His parents made him a deal: if you save for half of it, we’ll pay the other half. So, he decided to start a business picking up people’s dog poop in their yards. The reason for choosing this as a business was simple.

“I decided that picking up dog poop was something that dog owners don’t really like to do.

We thought maybe they would be interested in paying for someone else to do it. And so we used that strategy to try and find customers,” Wyatt said, adding he also “felt like I was too lazy watching TV and I wanted to get out there and do something.”

He came up with a name, Wyatt’s Bomb Squad, and hired his first employee - his dad, Vince. (“I couldn’t do it myself because I don’t have a driver’s license, I’m not in 10th grade.”) He had a logo made, which he used on shirts they wore when they were on the job. He had a brochure made and his parents created a Facebook page to advertise the business. His sales pitch: “Is your yard a minefield of dog bombs? Let Wyatt (and his dad) clear your yard and make it safe for the whole family! We have flexible schedules and rates for all your poop-scooping needs!”

Once Wyatt’s Bomb Squad business had customers, he and his dad made the rounds four nights a week, 7-8 p.m.

The business earned rave reviews on its Facebook page.

“Loved seeing Wyatt every week! It’s really starting to pile up!”

“Way to go, Wyatt, you’ve done an amazing job.”

“Great work, buddy!”

Campbell fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Kellogg heard about Wyatt’s summer business and recently told her students about him as part of a reading unit that centered around a story, “Kids in Business,” which tells stories of children starting their own businesses. The unit’s essential question: “How can starting a business help others?” When her students heard about Wyatt they were amazed. “Wyatt is how old? He’s a Campbell student? Here?”

Eventually Kellogg realized it made the most sense for Wyatt to present to her class about his business experience. He talked to the class about

And so we used that strategy to try and find customers.” his motivation for starting the business, how he decided what his business would be and how he marketed and found customers. He also answered numerous questions from her students.

“He is a wise young man who is learning life lessons at a very young age. The chatter was aflutter in my room after he left,” Kellogg said. “Who knows? There may be some more small businesses opening in Lincoln one day - all because of a little boy who had the desire and work ethic to make a dream come true.”

Wyatt has put the business on hold until next summer so he can concentrate on school.

Also, as it says on the Wyatt’s Bomb Squad Facebook page, “Wyatt is POOPED.”
