Streets Alive! celebrates free, active fun in the Belmont community area By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS District Wellness Facilitator Each September, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln takes health and wellness resources into the community and adds food, fitness and fun with Streets Alive!, a free citywide outdoor movement festival. This year it will again be hosted by the Belmont neighborhood on Sunday, Sept. 23, 1-4:30 p.m. Streets Alive! is a family-, child-, pet- and wheelchair-friendly event that promotes good nutrition and active living, encouraging people to get out and get moving. Garden produce and food trucks with tasty, fresh choices show visitors the joy of eating healthy. A traffic-free event, nearly two miles of city streets are blocked off and lined with more than 100 exhibitors from non-profit organizations who provide free health resources and screenings to festival goers. All along the route, there are join-in fitness and sports activities to encourage people to walk, run, stroll, propel a wheelchair, bike or skate their way through the festival and participate in active outdoor fun. Streets Alive! is also filled with fun kids’ activities that teach as well as entertain. Find a route map at healthylincoln.org/streetsalive. This year, Streets Alive!, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln and the Belmont neighborhood will unveil the Streets Alive! Belmont Community Development Project, a covered shelter in Belmont Park that will serve as an outdoor classroom for additional programming for Belmont Elementary School, preschools and Community Learning Center; community, senior, and recreation centers, and additional meeting space for families, neighborhood organizations and faith communities. The project was funded through donations.
