Lincoln Public Schools: In One Word What does Lincoln Public Schools mean to our community?

One word – use just one word.

This past summer we posed that question – to our community, our families, our staff and our students – asking folks to describe LPS in one, single word.

Lincoln Public Schools is ______ .

We had hundreds and hundreds of responses – words that praised our school district with a breadth and depth of incredibly strong and powerful expressions of faith in Lincoln’s public schools. Words that inspired. Words that empowered. Words that underlined the extraordinary teaching and learning taking place at LPS during every hour, every day, every year. Words that captured the ordinary, yet extraordinary activities and bold actions of our educators. Words that highlighted why public schools are essential to developing the future generations of our community and country.

We gathered all of your amazing responses, choose the top nine responses, and will make them our nine LPS themes for each month throughout the 2018-19 school year.

We will unveil them each month, one at time.

So to launch our initiative at the beginning of this school year, we chose a word that captures the very essence of public schools in Lincoln.

Community Awareness Series

Promoting Healthy Behaviors Our youth are our future’s greatest asset. Schools, parents, caregivers and communities all play a role in providing supportive pathways for our youth as they navigate childhood and adolescence.

SCIP (School Community Intervention and Prevention) is partnering with Lincoln Public Schools, Bryan Independence Center and the Lancaster Prevention Coalition to put on a series of valuable presentations about how to support the health and well-being of our community’s youth. These events are open to parents, students, school professionals and community members.

September 27, 2018- The Truth About Vaping

Lincoln East High School 6:30 p.m.

Presentation: Christina Hitz’s background spans the fields of public health, law enforcement and communications. She currently serves as a public health educator at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department where she specializes in tobacco prevention and works to educate the community about evolving nicotine products.

Her presentation will include some myth busting; vapor products are not just harmless water vapor. Local data and trends on vaping will be provided, as well as information about one of the hottest electronic cigarettes on the market, JUUL. How to spot vaping behaviors, what adults can do to be proactive, resources for learning more and for quitting any nicotine products will also be provided.

September TeamMates of the Month:

From “Crazy Lunch Lady” to Trusted Friend Marie noticed Shayla in the lunch line at Park Middle School.

Most days she was the last child to go through, taking her tray to the farthest table to eat alone.

One day, Marie decided to approach Shayla. “Hello,” she said.

“No lunch today without a smile!” Marie waited, wondering how the girl would react.

Peeking through her long hair, Shayla gave Marie a look of disbelief, but when she sensed the sincerity of the request, she pasted a smile on her face. That was the beginning of their four-year relationship.

The next day, Shayla returned to Marie’s serving line in the lunchroom. “Can I have a smile, please?” Marie once again requested. Shayla, now more familiar with the routine, accommodated Marie.

Day three, Shayla smiled without prompting. “What’s your name?” Marie asked, and she learned the name of the quiet girl who would later become her TeamMate and friend.

Day four, Shayla came to Marie’s lunch line with a peer in tow.

“This is the lady who makes me smile!” That was when Shayla was 12, and four years later, Marie continues to make her smile.

No longer a shy middle-schooler, Shayla has found her niche at Lincoln High School. As a junior, she uses her musical prowess in marching band and other musical groups, serving as a band counselor to younger band members. Once a struggling student, Shayla has blossomed academically and hopes to take Advanced Placement classes this school year.

Shayla and Marie’s favorite memory occurred during a weekly December meeting at Park when it was too cold to walk outdoors. As a change of pace, Marie and Shayla decided to sing holiday carols in the commons area. Others gathered around to enjoy the beautiful merging of their voices. Those hearing were impacted by their unified song. The two enjoy sharing unexpected experiences as they build their bond.

Marie was instrumental in Shayla’s academic transformation.

When Shayla was stressed about assignments, Marie encouraged her to pull out the work to “talk it through” together. Every meeting and activity became an opportunity for learning and fun. Now, Shayla confidently manages high school life, finding ways to cope with challenges.

“Age makes no difference in friendship,” said Shayla, who admits that connecting wasn’t always easy. Shayla has struggled with periodic mood swings and disengagement, but the two consistently met, finding common interest in music and being “nerds.” In most cases, they ended up laughing together, even on the hard days. “When you find that connection, it’s like going from boring chess to crazy Yahtzee!” Shayla said.

After her encounter with the “crazy lunch lady,” Shayla approached the TeamMates facilitator at Park Middle School to request Marie as her TeamMates mentor. Marie and the facilitator completed the required steps to make the match a reality.

“I get that,” Marie responded. Their bond is cemented. The two plan to be TeamMates through Shayla’s graduation. She plans to attend University of Nebraska - Lincoln, majoring in music education and minoring in creative writing. In the meantime, they will continue to “be crazy together” in the best way possible, accepting and supporting one another regardless of what life offers.

LPS educators close the book on summer of learning As teachers with Lincoln Public Schools put the finishing touches on their lesson plans for a new school year, many of them drew on lessons they learned during the summer.

Thousands of LPS educators registered for more than 50,000 hours of professional development courses and summer learning sessions this summer.

LPS Superintendent Steve Joel said such a time commitment is a far cry from when he was teaching in the 1970s. Joel talked about this change when he addressed more than 700 educators from LPS and across the state at the second annual Supporting Positive Behavior Conference, sponsored by LPS and held June 13 at

Lincoln Southwest High School.

“Back in the good old days,” he said jokingly, “we got out of school on a Thursday, we were out of there by Sunday and we didn’t come back until two or three days before the kids arrived.”

But, he went on to say, “The truth is, you’re here because you’re professionals. You’re here because student behavior is very important in the work you do. You’re here because you care.”

Here are just a few examples of the many professional development opportunities offered to LPS teachers and staff this summer: Anita Archer, a national expert on

explicit instruction, literacy, engagement and classroom management, visited Lincoln for five days in late June to work with more than 500 LPS staff members. They learned about literacy strategies to increase student reading achievement, as well as strategies for engaging students in the learning process.

In June, every school sent their school improvement teams, which consist of administrators and teacher leaders, to the LPS Continuous Improvement Workshop. At this full-day workshop, teams examined their student achievement data and discussed trends, strengths and needs. They also set goals and began to draft action steps for continued growth and student achievement for the 2018-2019

Sarah Salem, LPS director of continuous improvement and professional learning, said opportunities such as these highlight more than the district’s commitment to professional growth.

This summer, all principals read “The Culture Code” by Dan Coyle. District leaders then facilitated book chats across the city so principals could collaborate and share ideas about what their schools can do to help create strong school cultures.

“It really says a lot about how our teachers and staff are dedicated to our students,” Salem said.

LPS kicks off new season of Learning Lunches Lincoln Public Schools has released its schedule for the Learning Lunch series for the 201819 school year.

LPS Learning Lunches tell the “untold stories” of our schools and are open to the community. Learning Lunches are held in the Board Room at LPS District Office, 5905 O St. Doors open at 11:45 a.m., the program begins at noon and questions-and-answers are at 12:30 p.m.

You’re encouraged to bring your own lunch - and LPS provides dessert!

LPS hosted its first Learning Lunch on Aug. 21. The program, “Beatles, Bee Gees and Beyonce: Communicating and Managing Generational Differences,” delved into the myriad differences among the generations. Please visit lps.org for coverage of this light-hearted but insightful Learning Lunch.

National organization honors Mickle social studies teacher “This award is especially meaningful to me because it was voted on by fellow teachers.”

A national education group has honored Mickle Middle School teacher Doreen Ainslie as one of only 46 teachers in the country to receive an award that recognizes dedication to the profession, community engagement, professional development, attention to diversity and advocacy for fellow educators.

The NEA Foundation announced this summer that Ainslie received the California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence.

The winning teachers will be honored in February at the Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C. “This award is especially meaningful to me because it was voted on by fellow teachers,” said Ainslie, who teaches social studies and has been with Lincoln Public Schools since 1979.

Visiting teacher offers unique learning experience for LSW Japanese language students

Eleven LPS business teachers named among state’s ‘B.E.S.T.’ The Nebraska Department of Education recently honored 11 teachers from Lincoln Public Schools for their dedication to business education.

Lincoln Southwest High School is one of nine schools in the country hosting a visiting Japanese teacher for the next two years as part of a program that pairs native Japanese-speaking teachers with their American counterparts in the classroom.

The LPS teachers were among 56 statewide to earn B.E.S.T. (Belong, Excel, Study and Travel) Awards. The Department of Education cited the winners’ “involvement in professional associations, community and school activities, professional leadership development and service to the business education profession,” as well as their “dedication to students, community outreach, and continual classroom improvement efforts.”

Southwest teacher Tammy Cunningham will co-teach her Japanese courses with Yu Hiraoka as part of the Japanese Language Education Assistant Program, or J-LEAP, which is funded through a partnership between the Laurasian Institute and the Japan Foundation.

The J-LEAP program paid for Cunningham and Hiraoka to attend a five-day training session in Seattle in late July. On July 30, they flew back to Lincoln, where Hiraoka will stay with a host family for at least the next three months as she gets acclimated.

Sitting in Cunningham’s classroom just days before the start of school, they both bubbled with excitement to get started with their co-teaching experience.

“This is a very exciting thing for my students and for me,” Cunningham said. “We will be able to learn from Yu’s perspective as a young teacher who was born and raised in Japan, and it will be very motivating to speak with a native speaker on a daily basis.”

Cunningham lived and co-taught English in Japan after she graduated from college 18 years ago. Needless to say, the Japanese language has evolved since that immersion experience. “I’m sure I’m a little out of touch with slang and some of the words being used now.”

Hirakoa experienced a similar teaching arrangement but from the perspective of a student learning to speak English in Japan.

“In Japan as a student, it was very nice to have English native speakers as teachers,” Hiraoka said. “Their classes were very fun and they were good at motivating students to study. It was exciting.”

Cunningham has taught Japanese at Southwest since the school opened in 2002. Southwest is the only LPS school that offers Japanese and it continues to grow in popularity. There are 30 students enrolled in the introductory course this fall.

“I can’t wait to introduce Yu to my students and likewise them to her,” Cunningham said.

“I think we’ll make a great team.”

“I’m ready to start,” Hirakoa added. “I’m ready to teach - and to learn.”

1st Job-Lincoln connects students to potential IT careers Lincoln Public Schools joined community organizations and businesses on July 27 to celebrate a program that matches students with their first jobs, typically in the information technology field.

The event, held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Business building, honored the students, business leaders and organizations involved with 1st Job-Lincoln.

The program was developed five years ago as a way to introduce Lincoln high school students to the professional world. Developed by the Lincoln Human Resource Management Association (LHRMA), it teaches students about resumes, interviewing and professionalism, and matches high school students with paid internships.

“We are focusing on workforce readiness, the first step in making sure our high school students are prepared and ready for employment,” said Robbie Seybert, chairman of the LHRMA Workforce Readiness Committee and director of employee relations and personnel at LPS. He noted that the 1st Job-Lincoln program pulls from a “broad sweep” of talented young people – from all public and parochial Lincoln high schools, with an emphasis on The Career Academy (TCA) at LPS – and matches them with a variety of generous local businesses and organizations.

One of those talented young people was Noah Costello, a 2018 graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School who attended TCA. Costello had an internship at Don’t Panic Labs, a Lincoln software development firm. He helped develop an app - called MyLNK - that

ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES EVENT EXPECTATIONS Lincoln Public Schools is proud to have outstanding athletic and activity programs for our students. We welcome and encourage your attendance and appreciate your support of these programs. To ensure that everyone attending has an enjoyable and safe experience we would like to pass on a few reminders for students and families attending these events.

Athletics and activities are part of the educational experience and students are expected to follow schoollevel expectations for acceptable behaviors. When students are at any school activity, whether at their school, another school, or LPS venue, they must behave in a manner that represents their school and themselves well. ● When attending games and activities at Seacrest Field, students and adults must select which side of the stadium they want to sit on upon entering the stadium. (Home team fans enter and sit on the west side.

Visiting team fans are located on the east side.) ● All spectators should remain in the stands for the duration of the contest. Fans are not allowed to be on the field and should not cross the field to reach the opposite side of the stadium. Fans should not block stairs and ramps entrance and exit locations. ● Seacrest Field maintains a no re-entry policy, which means fans must pay for admission should they choose to leave the stadium and want to re-enter. Adult and high school student passes are good for one admission per event only. ● High School Students will only be allowed to enter on their school’s side of the stadium if their school is playing. High school students can use their pass to attend another school’s events if their school is not playing at the site, entering on either side of the stadium. ● It is expected that all students display appropriate and respectful behavior during the presentation of the flag and the playing of the National Anthem. ● Students are expected to sit in the stands during the game and not run around in the stands, aisles, or on the concourse level. Students are not allowed to bring in additional items such as balls, skateboards, hoverboards, or other items that are determined to be inappropriate by supervising staff. In order to maintain a safe area, students are not allowed to play on the upper concourse area. ● Student behavior is expected to align with school expectations. Students using foul language or participating in actions deemed inappropriate by event supervisors may be asked to sit with an adult or leave the game. Student names may be reported to the school principal for further disciplinary measures.

Career Academy summer program pairs courses in culinary and engineering A group of incoming Lincoln Public Schools ninth-graders spent six weeks of their summer vacation cooking, creating, designing and dicing as part of a pilot summer school program at The Career Academy (TCA).

The 32 students from Culler, Park, Goodrich and Dawes middle schools spent their mornings split between two, two-hour courses: Introduction to Engineering Design and Culinary Foundations.

In the engineering design course, students used 3D animation software to design objects they then produced using a 3D printer, including a toy car and cookie cutters.

They used the cookie cutters in their culinary course, which also included lessons on knife skills and meal preparation and presentation, to name a few.

Cory Free, an industrial technology teacher at Lincoln North Star High School, taught the engineering design course; Lovena Glantz, a family and consumer science teacher at Lincoln High School, taught the culinary course, along with Katie Skinner from Southeast Community College.

TCA Director Dan Hohensee said the program was a great way to expose students to some of the options they’ll have during their junior and senior years, when they can attend TCA, as well as offer them a head start on earning elective credits they’ll need to graduate.

“This is great preparation for high school and valuable exposure to career options,” Hohensee said.

The program was funded through a federal grant and offered to students who attended middle schools that receive

federal Title I funds, which are awarded to schools with high rates of poverty.

Hohensee said TCA plans to offer the program again next summer, perhaps on an even larger scale through grants and other funding options.

Now, more than a decade later, she started work as a second-grade resource teacher at Belmont Elementary School when the new school year began Aug. 13. She credits those early teachers at Park for helping her get to this point.

“Now I want to have that same effect on students,” Mwenentanda said.

She was one of more than 400 new Lincoln Public Schools teachers who attended a welcome breakfast and all-day orientation on July 30 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. They heard from Lincoln Board of Education President Connie Duncan, LPS Superintendent Steve Joel, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, 2017 Nebraska Teacher of the Year Amber Vlasnik from Lincoln High School, as well as a host of other LPS administrators and representatives from the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools and the Lincoln Education Association.

They heard vital information about a variety of subjects student services, special education, school security, child abuse and neglect training.

They heard inspiring words about the importance of their work. And they heard from each other, sitting at tables with other new teachers from their schools. They used the time between speakers to get to know each other and to discuss issues related to teaching and education.

They also bonded over the butterflies that come with the start of - for most of them their first teaching jobs.

“I don’t know what to expect.

I’m nervous - but a good nervous,” Mwenentanda said.

Katie Kovanda, a new fourthgrade teacher at Belmont, said she’s feeling a “mixture of excited and nervous.”

“But mostly I’m thrilled,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and I landed my dream job. This is where I wanted to teach.”

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Facilitator Do you know what is offered for breakfast and lunch at your child’s school beyond the entrée posted online? Most of us only know what our kids tell us. Here’s the skinny on what students receive if they choose school breakfast.

A school breakfast includes: • One to two bread/whole grain/cereals • A protein source, such as a small yogurt or with some entrée options including hard boiled and scrambled eggs, cheese and/or breakfast meat paired with the grain in sandwich form • Eight ounces of low-fat milk (regular or low-sugar chocolate) • One fresh, frozen or canned fruit serving and/ or 4 oz. juice.

Planting the seed of teaching outdoors More than 20 Lincoln Public Schools educators attended a workshop at Holmes Elementary School on Aug. 3 to learn about how they can use gardens and outdoor learning spaces to teach math, science and language arts.

LPS Sustainability Coordinator Brittney Albin organized the free half-day event, which included time inside the school and outside in the Holmes garden. Representatives from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska Forest Service and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources showed the group of mostly elementary school teachers how they could incorporate school gardens into the approved LPS curriculum.

“We know there’s an interest from teachers for them to have students spend time outside and we want to align that with what’s going on in our schools every day,” Albin said.

Cameron Mettinbrink is one of those interested teachers.

He’s about to begin his first year with LPS, as a kindergarten teacher at Lakeview Elementary School. After attending the workshop, he’s excited to find ways to incorporate outdoor learning spaces into his lessons.

“It’s teaching kids that learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom,” Mettinbrink said.

The Aug. 3 workshop was geared toward elementary school teachers, but Albin said she hopes to organize future workshops for middle school and high school teachers.

Annual Saltdogs field trip is a hit with students

More than 3,300 Lincoln Public Schools fifth-grade students cheered on the home team at a Lincoln Saltdogs baseball game on Aug. 22.

It’s an LPS tradition now in its 10th year that combines classroom learning with a day at the ballpark.

Students also learned about good sportsmanship and fan etiquette.

“You should never boo because that’s disrespectful,” said Amanu, a student from Adams Elementary School.

“The players are already under a lot of pressure.”

And oh, what a day at the ballpark. Picture-perfect weather.

Concession stands selling ice cream and hot dogs. Onfield entertainment between innings. And a 3-1 win for Lincoln.

To say this field trip was a hit would be an understatement.

This was a walk-off home run.

“I really love being at school but this is really, really, really exciting,” said Makenzie, a student at Fredstrom Elementary School.

Said Evan, from Campbell Elementary School: “Did you see where we are sitting in the stadium? We’re so close to the field. We’re the luckiest school ever.”

loved the Dippin’ Dots ice cream she was able to buy. And Brayden, also from Roper, just loved watching the game.

“I am all about baseball. I love baseball. I live baseball. I’ve been on a baseball team ever since I was young. I love the Saltdogs,” he said.

Matt Avey, LPS curriculum specialist for health and physical fitness, said the annual field trip to Haymarket Park is meant not only as a fun activity but as a way to reinforce so-

cial-emotional learning - the “soft skills” - that students are being taught in the classroom.

“We hope they leave and feel a little more enriched that they were able to attend an event like this in our community and that they were able to use some of those skills they’re learning in the classroom, including how to represent yourself and your school in public,” Avey said, adding that students write thankyou letters to the Saltdogs organization after the game.

Some students not only attended the game but were active participants. Students from Arnold Elementary School sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Cooper from Beattie Elementary School was the Saltdogs’ “mini-manager,” handing over the team’s lineup card to the umpire and yelling the traditional “play ball!” to start the game. A student from each of the 39 elementary schools served as a “watchdog” and ran onto the field with Saltdog players as they were introduced before the game.

Saltdogs President/General Manager Charlie Meyer has been involved with the LPS field trip since its first year and it never gets old.

“I just love seeing all the kids at the ballpark.”

Zoo School a powerful draw for family from Alabama Herman Sample and his daughter, Maya, moved to Lincoln from Alabama recently. One of the major factors in deciding on the move was so Maya could attend the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program, commonly referred to as Zoo School.

It’s less than a week into the school year, but the Samples already are confident they made the right choice.

“It’s been great,” Maya said.

They’re less confident about experiencing their first Nebraska winter. The average January temperature in Alabama is 54 degrees, compared to 33 degrees in their new home state.

“Everyone keeps warning me about the winters,” Herman said. “We’d have snow days in Alabama but by the afternoon the snow would be melted.”

“We wore shorts on Christmas,” Maya added.

So why the decision, despite the looming chilly temperatures?

In August 2017, the Samples were already leaning toward making the 1,000-mile move from Tuscaloosa when they visited Lincoln to witness the solar eclipse. That’s when they first heard about Zoo School, which is located inside the Lincoln Children’s Zoo

and combines hands-on experience with classroom learning. The more they heard, the more they liked - and the more they knew they wanted to move to Lincoln.

Maya, a junior, now attends Lincoln Southwest High School for part of the morning before traveling to Zoo School for the rest of the day. She likes the block scheduling at Southwest and the way teachers collaborate. At Zoo School, she loves being near the animals, especially because she wants to study veterinary

medicine in college.

Beyond the classroom, there’s one more LPS experience she really enjoys so far the transportation that’s offered between Southwest and Zoo School.

“It’s exciting to be on a school bus for the first time in seven years.”

The 20-year-old Zoo School is one example of the many choices that LPS offers students for them to succeed and

achieve - 39 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, six comprehensive high schools and a variety of high school alternative programs.

The Zoo School enrolls roughly 100 students from grades nine through 12, both from public and private schools. Students who attend LPS focus programs such as Zoo School remain students at their home schools, where they can participate in activities, athletics and social events.

Streets Alive! celebrates free, active fun in the Belmont community area

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS District Wellness Facilitator Each September, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln takes health and wellness resources into the community and adds food, fitness and fun with Streets Alive!, a free citywide outdoor movement festival.

This year it will again be hosted by the Belmont neighborhood on Sunday, Sept. 23, 1-4:30 p.m.

Streets Alive! is a family-, child-, pet- and wheelchair-friendly event that promotes good nutrition and active living, encouraging people to get out and get moving. Garden produce and food trucks with tasty, fresh choices show visitors the joy of eating healthy. A traffic-free event, nearly two miles of city streets are blocked off and lined with more than 100 exhibitors from non-profit organizations who provide free health resources and screenings to festival goers.

All along the route, there are join-in fitness and sports activities to encourage people to walk, run, stroll, propel a wheelchair, bike or skate their way through the festival and participate in active outdoor fun. This year, Streets Alive!, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln and the Belmont neighborhood will unveil the Streets Alive! Event celebrates positive impact of Community Learning Centers

Leaders from Lincoln Public Schools, the City of Lincoln and the community gathered June 20 to celebrate the rich history and bright future of the city’s Community Learning Centers.

The event, “A Salute to Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers,” was held at the Lincoln Community Foundation.

The packed room illustrated the widespread support for Community Learning Centers, commonly referred to as CLCs, which began in Lincoln 20 years ago.

The city’s 26 current CLCs are located in schools and support the development and implementation of safe, supervised before- and after-school programs, weekend and summer enrichment opportunities and other support services for children, families and neighborhoods.

On June 20, those who spoke emphasized community collaboration and the positive impact of CLCs in Lincoln.

And that’s because people like yourself - and many others - come together to wrap their arms around the most vulnerable and give them a chance to be successful. That’s why it works. Friends, family and colleagues gathered June 19 to honor Shari Styskal, the Lincoln Public Schools budget director who is retired this summer after 42 years with the school district.

Styskal typically avoids public speaking, letting her tireless service to LPS do the talking. But on this occasion, she asked for the microphone.

Styskal also started and organized the BackPack Extra Mile Walk for 10 years. The annual event raises money for the Food Bank of Lincoln’s generous BackPack initiative, which provides a weekly Friday backpack filled with food for students who may not have enough to eat over the weekend. The event raised more than $1.5 million during Styskal’s time as organizer.

“It’s wonderful to see you all - the people I have worked with through the years,” Styskal told the crowd inside the Board Room at LPS district office.

“My life is richer for knowing you.”

Styskal worked with the LPS budget for 28 years, first as budget coordinator and then as director. Before that, she worked for 11 years at Custodial Services, Maintenance and Facilities.

She began her LPS career at Lincoln Northeast High School.

“Shari has dedicated an amazing amount of her life to Lincoln Public

Schools,” said Liz Standish, associate superintendent for business affairs.

“There’s no one out there who cares more deeply about getting everything right - about serving taxpayers, about serving students.”

Former Associate Superintendent for Instruction Jane Stavem compared Styskal’s budget work to another of her passions, quilting. It requires a precise personality, someone who can piece things together, spot patterns

As for her work at LPS, Styskal said she will miss the challenge of working with an annual budget that now tops $443 million.

“But I will miss the people I work with the most.”

In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the NEBRASKA SPORTS COUNCIL athletics/sports program, and related events and activities, the undersigned: 1. Agrees that prior to participating, he/she will inspect the facilities and equipment to be used, and if he/she believes anything is unsafe, will refuse to participate.

2. Acknowledges and fully understands that he/she will be engaging in activities that involve risk of serious injury, including permanent disability and death, and severe social and economic losses which might result not only from his/her own actions, inactions or negligence of others, the rules of play, or the condition of the premises or of any equipment used.

3. Assumes all the foregoing risks and accepts personal responsibility for the damages following such an injury, permanent disability or death.

4. Releases, waives, discharges and covenants not to sue the NEBRASKA SPORTS COUNCIL, its affiliated clubs, their respective administrators, directors, agents, coaches and other employees of the organization, other participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, advertisers, and, if applicable, owners and leasers of premises used to conduct the event, all of which are hereinafter referred to as “releasees”, from the demands, losses or damages on account of injury, including death or damage to property, caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the releasee or otherwise.

5. Understands the following refund policy: There will be NO refunds of entry fees because of inclement weather or other acts of nature. The only exceptions to the no-refund policy are: Entries received after the entry deadline; Entries of non-qualified entrants; Entries of those prohibited from participating due to errors made by the Nebraska Sports Council; Special circumstances as determined on an individual basis by the Board of Directors and requiring board action. NO REFUNDS WILL BE PERMITTED SIMPLY BECAUSE AN ATHLETE FAILS TO PARTICIPATE. 6. Agrees to allow the Nebraska Sports Council to photograph him/her during the Nebraska Sports Council events and to display his/her image in promotion of the Nebraska Sports Council programs including social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.

7. Pledges to adhere to the Nebraska Sports Council standards of sportsmanship and respect opponents, coaches, officials and spectators at all times by not engaging in verbal or physical altercations at any time before, during or after competition.

Annual LPS Leadership Conference rings in the new school year Welcome to a brand new school year.

Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel on July 24 welcomed all of the school district’s administrators to the 2018-19 school year at the annual Leadership Conference – an all-day event that has become the annual launch of a new year and provides inspiration for the months ahead.

“We talk about our school district and we talk about all the things we have going for us,” Joel said, “and we know this: school is one of the most important enterprises that a society, a community, a state and a country can offer our children.”

“You’re a special breed,” said Connie Duncan, president of the Lincoln Board of Education, addressing administrators at Lincoln High School. “Each of

you are extremely valuable to our district - but most importantly to our students and families.”

Keynote speaker Nebraska Volleyball Coach John Cook shared some of the lessons learned during his 19 years leading the Husker volleyball program and how they can translate to the lessons learned inside schools: hard work, teamwork and motivation. In fact, one reason he believes his teams have experienced such success - four national championships and 13 conference titles - is that 60 percent of his players have come from households with parents who were teachers or coaches.

At the end of the day, Cook said, as leaders, ask yourself three questions:

“When you come from a background where your mom or dad is a teacher or coach, you come from a background of being exposed to people who are helping, who are giving back,” Cook said. “They’re

Later, he directed his respect to those in the audience: “I really admire what you guys do - thank you.”

Aug. 16 was the first day of the 2018-19 school year for the Lincoln Public Schools preschool program, which serves more than 1,500 students and their families in 66 classrooms across the city.

LPS provides a comprehensive, 3.5-hour preschool program in which children: learn through play; make choices; increase social skills; and build confidence.

The program provides: • Opportunities to socialize, solve problems and experience success • People who care, accept and encourage • Home visits that focus on the family • A variety of learning experiences in a safe, caring setting • Health screenings • Practice of good habits in eating, teeth brushing, cleanliness and safety • Partnerships for parents in volunteering, leadership and development • Help for special needs of children with disabilities • Assistance in using community resources For this school year, children who were at least three years old on or before July 31, 2018, and who had not yet turned five as of July 31, 2018, were eligible to apply.

LPS welcome back rally resonates with theme of

‘every child, every day’

“Every child, every day, gets the best of what we have.”

And with those inspiring words from Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel, LPS kicked off the 2018-19 school year at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Aug. 6. Roughly 4,500 LPS teachers and staff gathered for the school district’s Welcome Back Celebration, which featured music from marching bands, shout-outs to schools and buildings, and words of support and encouragement for the new school year from LPS officials.

“Welcome to the 2018-19 best school year ever,” said Lincoln Board of Education President Connie Duncan, a former LPS teacher for 17 years. “I can feel the energy in the room.”

That’s for sure. The first day of school for most students was Aug. 13, but LPS employees - from schools and LPS buildings - were already brimming with excitement as they responded to their shout-outs with their own rallying calls in unison.

There were pompons, noisemakers, school mascots and, in the case of Lincoln Southeast High School, a well-choreographed response that began with the student marching band playing the Superman theme song and ended with Southeast Principal Brent Toalson dressed in a muscle-bound Superman costume.

“I’ve never seen the Haymarket so alive at 8 o’clock in the morning,” said Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler. “It’s an amazing thought to me how many kids are going to be influenced during your time with the school district.”

The event also featured a keynote address by Derreck Kayongo, whose family fled a civil war in Uganda when he was only 11 years old. Now a successful entrepreneur, Kayongo is a renowned expert in environmental sustainability and global health. He’s the founder of the Global Soap Project, which takes donated, melted, purified and reprocessed hotel soap and redistributes it to vulnerable populations around the world.

Besides telling his personal story, Kayongo stressed the importance of education: “If you’re an educator, never doubt the power of your contribution to the marketplace, because without that contribution, mathematics is not possible, chemistry is not possible - innovation is not possible.”

Also speaking: 2017 Nebraska Teacher of the Year Amber Vlasnik of Lincoln High School: “There’s something truly special about being in the room with a group of people who want to change the world one student at a time.”

They both faced challenges in school but ultimately thrived because of great teachers. “So it really isn’t, ‘Oh, here we go again,’ it’s that you’re going to do it, again and again again, for thousands of kids like Katie and Michael and all the kids in between. I couldn’t be prouder to stand among you.”

Superintendent Joel left the audience with a reminder of the importance of their work as educators.

It’s what separates us from so many other debates in America right now. At the end of the day, if public education doesn’t work, America fails. And we can never take that lightly.”
