Fueling up for a new school year Lincoln Public Schools spent months gearing up for the new year - no one more so than the Nutrition Services Department.

Early on the morning of Aug. 5, employees at the Nutrition Services Distribution Center near 9th and Van Dorn streets welcomed a parade of trucks filled with food and supplies for the school year. Boxes upon boxes arrived, filled with everything from green beans to rotini, from ketchup to plastic gloves.

Throughout the school year, millions of pounds of food pass through the distribution center on its way to cafeterias. Food is ordered six weeks in advance. Nutrition Services is self-sustaining, meaning it receives no money from the LPS general fund.

Students honored for their art at star-studded national event Two students from Lincoln Public Schools were honored this summer for their art during a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Every year, the Scholastic Art & Writing Alliance partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to honor students in grades 7-12 for their work. This year, more than 340,000 students entered submissions; only 2,700 earned national recognition.

Sarah Al-Hilfy Leon, a recent graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School, won the Silver Medal with Distinction for her photography portfolio, “Red, White, and Blue.”

Her instructor was Amber Burhman. Milan Reeves, a recent graduate of Lincoln North Star High School, won the Gold Medal for Digital Art for her submission, “Thank you, Mom.” Her instructor was Brooke Gillotti.

The students, accompanied by their teachers, were honored during a ceremony June 6 at Carnegie Hall. Guest speakers included Emmy-winning actress, writer and producer Tina Fey; Emmy-nominated actress Rose Byrne; and the 22nd poet laureate of the United States, Tracy K. Smith.

September TeamMates of the Month

John and Christian: Priceless Impact School has been in session only three days, and John and Christian have not met since May. As the TeamMates greet one another, a genuine connection is evident. They have a quiet but strong friendship.

“John is a good friend, and he’s really understanding,” says Christian, a sophomore at Lincoln Northeast High School.

John has been Christian’s TeamMate since third grade.

Shy by nature, Christian believes that John has helped him grow. “He has taught me how to be more sociable and how to look on the bright side of life.” Christian, a self-proclaimed cat-lover, lost his pet. John comforted him.“I was surprised by how caring he is,” Christian says.

“He’s influenced me, too,” John says. “He’s helped me be a better dad, and I’ve learned how to deal with life’s challenges from him.”

The two know one another well. John knows that math is Christian’s favorite subject, he knows that he’s a gifted artist, and that Hawaii is his dream destination.

“I know he loves hanging out with me,” Christian says.

John smiles and nods. “Sometimes we don’t say a lot. We play games and draw, but getting to see someone grow up, doing the right things along the way is priceless. I’m as proud of Christian as I am my own son.”

Southwest grad leaves her mark on Lincoln For all of her accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field, recent Lincoln Southwest High School graduate Emma Kauf will leave behind no greater legacy than the generosity she has shown to the Northeast Family Center.

The family center, located in the Havelock neighborhood, serves the northeast Lincoln community and is the Lead Community Learning Center Agency for Norwood Park and Brownell elementary schools.

The family center will receive a $10,000 donation from Gatorade, thanks to Kauf being named the 2019 Nebraska High School Gatorade Player of the Year for softball. Honorees from each state win a $1,000 donation to the non-profit of their choice, as well as the opportunity to be the one softball player nationwide who wins a $10,000 donation to their chosen organization. Kauf - who graduated this spring with a 4.3 grade point average - wrote the winning essay about why Northeast Family Center deserved $10,000.

She wrote, in part, “I believe the impact these awards can make is important because it will help close an opportunity and equity gap many of these scholars face due to various barriers, including access, awareness, limited financial resources, and advocacy. Being on numerous athletic teams I know the impact athletics can have on a young person’s development both on and off the field of play.”

On July 16, Kauf was joined at the Northeast Family Center by family, coaches, teammates, educators and Norwood Park students to celebrate the donation, which will go toward the purchase of equipment, experiential service opportunities, leadership development, and program development and enhancement.

“It’s going to make a huge impact,” said Curt Krueger, Northeast Family Center’s executive director. “We’re a small non-profit so a donation like this makes a big difference...It’s possible because of Emma.”

Kauf formed a bond with the Northeast Family Center through a partnership between the Southwest High School girls basketball team and students at the Norwood Park Community Learning Center (CLC). She and her teammates visited the students, taught them basketball fundamentals and - even more importantly - served as mentors and role models. The partnership was forged years ago by Pete Ferguson, LPS youth development coordinator.

“It’s about Lincoln,” said Dana Berger, the school coordinator for the Norwood Park CLC. “It’s not about northeast Lincoln, it’s not about southwest Lincoln, it’s about Lincoln the community.”

Kauf, who leaves to continue her academic and softball career at Georgia Tech, deflected praise for the donation and instead thanked those in attendance.

“I wouldn’t be the same person without all of you guys. Thank you so much for all of the support.”

Career Academy student wins national honors A recent Lincoln Public Schools graduate and former student at The Career Academy took top honors in June at a national culinary event.

Hanna Christainsen won first place and a gold medal in the Commercial Baking category at the national SkillsUSA Championships, held June 26-27 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Christainsen graduated from Lincoln Southwest High School in May and completed the Culinary Pathway at The Career Academy.

The competition included more than 6,400 career and technical education students from across the country. In the Commercial Baking category, contestants were challenged to meet production and quality standards expected by industry. The contest included a written examination and practical exercises. Contestants demonstrated their knowledge and skills through scaling, mixing, preparing and baking seven products. The products included breads, rolls, cookies, pastry and pies. The students also had to demonstrate their cake decorating skills.

Christainsen prepared cheddar pepper scones, 9.5 pounds of honey wheat bread, eclairs and cream puffs, apple galettes, chocolate chip cookies, three shapes of filled Danish pastries and decorated a four-layer cake.

For her victory, Christainsen received a culinary calculator, an Amazon tablet and a full scholarship to Sullivan University, the Culinary Institute of America or Johnson and Wales University.

Native American students explore options at Science, Arts & Humanities focus programs Fourteen Native American students from across Lincoln Public Schools recently spent a day at the LPS Science, and Arts and Humanities focus programs, a learning experience made possible by a new, federally-funded initiative aimed at improving the education opportunities for this group of students.

The students, ages middle school through high school, spent the morning at the Arts and Humanities Focus Program, located near Lincoln High School at 25th and Randolph streets.

They created “blind” contour drawings of themselves that explored several overarching themes: How they see themselves, how others see them and how the world affects how they see themselves.

At the Science Focus Program, located at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, the students participated in dissection, chemistry and physics small-group activities, as well as lessons at Antelope Creek that focused on botany, ecology and geology.

During both visits, students learned more about the focus programs, such as how to apply and what a typical day looks like for their students. Both focus programs are for students in grades

nine through 12. Students spend part of their mornings at their home high school before attending their focus program for the rest of the day. Students can still take part in extracurricular activities, clubs and events at their home high school.

The focus program visits were made possible by the LPS Native Youth College and Career Readiness Project, a new initiative funded through a four-year, $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The project’s coordinator, Barbara Buttes, said the visits encouraged students to dream big.

“This type of exciting learning experience provides Native students with exposure to potential career paths they may have otherwise not considered,” she said. “Our Native students have limitless potential and we intend to celebrate their growth and achievements. They showed me that their futures are wide open.”

Kurt Glathar, principal for both of the focus programs, said he looks forward to hosting similar events in the future.

“We believe this is a valuable opportunity to connect with a group of students that have great potential, but are underrepresented in

Students bond with Alzheimer’s patients For the third year in a row, students taking summer courses at Lincoln North Star High School channeled their creativity and compassion toward a good cause: raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and those who struggle with the disease.

Students in teacher Jen Deets’s art class created works intended to educate classmates and the public about Alzheimer’s. They showed their finished projects to a group of men and women with Alzheimer’s from CountryHouse Residence for Memory Care who visited North Star in July.

“Art can tell a story and what a great way to tell this story,” said Deets, who teaches at Lincoln High School during the school year.

In addition to visiting Deets’ classroom, the CountryHouse residents joined summer school students and staff for the “Putt an end to Alzheimer’s” miniature golf event, also meant to raise awareness about the disease. Art students decorated many of the miniature-golf putting greens with images and messages related to Alzheimer’s.

The now annual summer school event is organized by Pete Ferguson, LPS youth development coordinator. His mother lived with Alzheimer’s for 14 years before passing away this spring.

Many of the students formed meaningful bonds with CountryHouse residents during their short visit to North Star. Sidney Crichton, soon to be a 10th-grader at Lincoln Northeast High School, spent time with a woman who reminded her of her late great grandmother.

“She kept a smile on my face the whole time she was here,” said Crichton, who wants to someday work in a field that involves caring for the elderly.

Deangelo Bolden, who will be a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School, had no previous exposure to Alzheimer’s - “to be honest, I had never thought about it.” He now plans on volunteering with Alzheimer’s patients because of his summer school experience.

“It just got to me,” he said, holding a hand to his heart.

Summer Tech Program builds on students' creativity The Lincoln Public Schools Summer Technology Program, now in its 21st year, provides a fun, unique experience that builds on technology-based learning that students in grades four through nine are exposed to during the school year.

There’s no better example of that than the program’s Claymation course, taught this summer by former Kooser Elementary School art teacher Jason Brunott.

“It helps them stay involved and using their creative imagination during the summer time,” Brunott said of the course, which asks students to combine various digital tools with more traditional art techniques - such as sketching storyboards and molding clay - to ultimately create a short film trailer.

About 450 students enrolled in the program this summer, an increase of about 100 students from last year. Classes are held at the Bryan Community Focus Program building near 48th and O streets.

Students could sign up for a variety of courses, which met for three hours a day for one week at a time, through July 19. Along with Claymation, courses included MIT Mobile App Development, Vex Robotics, Web Page Design/Web Graphics and Introduction to Programming Concepts.

The program has evolved and grown during its 20 years - enrollment was 60 students when it began but one thing hasn’t changed: It offers students the opportunity to hone the creative and critical thinking skills they developed from August through May. “I like for them to be able to problem-solve,” Brunott said. “My rule is, you have to try it first before you ask me for help.”

Parent tips for a powerful school year

by Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT District Wellness Facilitator Are you hoping for your student to have their best school year ever? Keeping them healthy is at the center of them feeling well and being able to focus on learning. Here are some tips for a shortcut to a better year.

Devise a device plan. Electronics reign supreme with our kids. Having bedtimes for devices and charging them in parent bedrooms can help prevent late-night issues and give kids back hours of uninterrupted sleep. It may also help prevent panic when kids may have forgotten to charge Chromebooks or other devices. If gaming systems or desktops are an issue, their power cords may also sleep or travel with parents. Never underestimate the lure of devices.

Fast pass out of the drop-off line. The best kept secret of parents who skip the drop-off hassles is allowing your kids to have breakfast with their buddies through school breakfast. Not only do you get off to start your day sooner, kids get to be social with friends and yet, get to start their day fed and not worried about being tardy. Everyone wins. Check your school’s webpage for breakfast times.

Take 20 to tackle troubles. Not every parent has the chance to pick up kids directly from school due to schedule issues.

Right after school is the time kids are most excited to share about their happenings of the day, so if you are the pick-up patrol, take advantage of this window of sharing.

If you miss the window (or even if you don’t), set aside 20 minutes daily to spend with your school-age child to check in and

have better awareness of what is happening in their lives. Between learning about their favorite streamers, music and/or Pokémon characters, you are likely to learn about any other swirling concerns. Since anxiety and depression are issues at new levels, keeping this time with them may be the crucial link to prevention and early intervention.

Enjoy twofer events. Take advantage of school and community events that provide family fun and introduce you to many of our best free resources to support families and the health of our community. Streets Alive is the perfect example of an all-ages, free event in our community. On Sept. 22, 1-4:30 p.m., near Park Middle School in the South Salt Creek/Cooper Park neighborhood, enjoy the biggest opportunity of the year to walk, ride and play on a specified path, providing access to community resources, healthy snacks and samples, as well as performances from local groups such as martial arts, Read Aloud Lincoln, dance troupes and more. This year an Art Walk has been added to the fun. For more details see the website of Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln at www.healthylincoln.org.

All roads lead to LPS for more than 350 new teachers Anthony Anderson and Kim Biddlecom took very different roads to reach their final destination as first-year English teachers at Lincoln Northeast High School.

For Anderson, the road was short: He’s a 2015 graduate of Northeast.

For Biddlecom, the road stretched more than 1,500 miles: She recently moved here from Maine.

Now their roads have converged at 2635 N. 63rd St. - home of the Rockets.

“It's a little nostalgic walking into the building where I went to high school, but I think there's also a lot of benefits,” Anderson said.

“There are a lot of people I can go to if I have any questions or need anything. It’s so exciting to have those connections right away when you get into a building alongside some of those teachers who had an impact on you.”

Biddlecom didn’t graduate from Northeast, but she’s already experienced the same level of support.

“I think the biggest thing that I've learned is just how compassion-

ate all of the teachers I've met are and just how willing they are to help fellow teachers coming in, especially from far away like I am,” Biddlecom said. “I think that it's amazing how connected you can be - if you need help, you know you can go to someone.”

They were two of more than 350 new Lincoln Public Schools teachers who attended a welcome breakfast and morning-long orientation Aug. 2 at Embassy Suites Hotel. It marked the end of their first week on the job - a week filled with professional development and learning as much as they could about LPS prior to the first day of school Aug. 12.

They heard from Lincoln Board of Education President Lanny Boswell, LPS Superintendent Steve Joel, Lincoln City Council Member - and former Board of Education Member - Richard Meginnis and 2018 Nebraska Teacher of the Year Sydney Jensen from Lincoln High School, among others.

They heard vital information about a variety of topics, including student services, school security, and child

abuse and neglect training. They heard inspiring words about the importance of their work. And they heard from each other, sitting at tables with other new teachers from their schools.

They used the time between speakers to get to know each other and

to discuss issues related to teaching and education.

And to share an experience many of them described the same way as Anderson.

“This is a dream come true.”

TCA teacher honored with award for courage in education Stephanie Howell watched the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986 as a grade-schooler sitting on the floor of her classroom. She cried along with millions of other Americans when the shuttle exploded on live television, killing all seven crew members.

at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and Lancaster County Jail, before finding her calling as a teacher. She taught social studies at Lincoln Northeast High School before moving to TCA three years ago. She was an early adopter of technological tools, has focused on non-fiction writing with critical thinking skills, created a peer mentoring group for students and started a before-school study hall for struggling students.

One of the astronauts on board was Christa McAuliffe, a high school social studies teacher who was lauded for her courage. More than 30 years later, Howell is a teacher for Lincoln Public Schools at The Career Academy and was recently honored with the Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education.

“I was incredibly humbled when I found out I was selected to receive it,” said Howell, who teaches psychology and government courses.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Education and Human Sciences honors a Nebraska teacher annually with the award.

Howell said to her, courage in teaching means “taking risks. It means thinking outside of the box

and advocating for what is best for your students. Sometimes it means being willing to step outside of your comfort zone as an educator to make this happen.”

Howell served in the U.S. Army for three years, followed by jobs

“I think what meant the most to me was reading the recommendations from colleagues, students and parents. That's a gift that not many educators get and I know I will forever cherish those words,” she said. “I recognize there are numerous educators across our state who are working tirelessly to help their students be successful and I consider myself blessed to be able to do what I love every day.”

LPS preschool program kicks off new year August 15 marked the first day of the 2019-20 school year for the Lincoln Public Schools preschool program, which serves more than 1,300 students and their families in 69 classrooms across the city.

We must be honest. The political climate of our country continues to be increasingly emotional as hot-button issues result in contentiousness and highly-charged conversation. 1st Job-Lincoln prepares students for IT careers Lincoln Public Schools joined community organizations and businesses on July 18 to celebrate a program that matches students with their first jobs, typically in the information technology field.

The event, held at Assurity Life Insurance Company at 20th and Q streets, honored the students, business leaders and organizations involved with 1st Job-Lincoln. The program was developed six years ago as a way to introduce Lincoln high school students to the professional world.

Developed by the Lincoln Human Resource Management Association (LHRMA), it teaches students about resumes, interviewing and professionalism, and matches high school students with paid internships.

The program pulls from a large pool of talented young people – from all public and parochial Lincoln high schools, with an emphasis on The Career Academy (TCA) at LPS – and matches them with a variety of generous local businesses and organizations. Ten businesses participated this summer.

LPS has been involved with 1st Job-Lincoln since the program’s inception six years ago. This summer, LPS employed an intern, making it a “Champion Employer.”

Conference focuses on supporting positive student behaviors Roughly 700 educators from Lincoln Public Schools and from school districts across the state gathered at Lincoln Southwest High School in June for the third annual Supporting Positive Behavior Conference.

LPS sponsored the conference, which spanned two days and featured more than 40 breakout sessions and keynote addresses from nationally renowned experts in the field of supporting positive student behavior, known as MultiTiered Systems of Support for Behavior (MTSS-B).

Robert Horner, a professor of special education at the University of Oregon, is considered one of the country’s leading voices on supporting positive student behavior.

He’s been researching and consulting on the topic for more than 30 years and kicked off the conference with the opening keynote.

Courageous or comfortable: Administrators asked to decide The 2019-2020 school year officially kicked off on Thursday, July 25, when Lincoln Public Schools leaders and administrators gathered at Lincoln Southwest High School for the annual Leadership Day. This year’s theme: “Equity: All means all.”

Lincoln Board of Education President Lanny Boswell welcomed LPS administrators and described the two major goals set forth by the Board for the upcoming school year: Moving forward with recommendations for top-priority facility needs for the school district, and working toward equity and accessibility for all students.

“To support academic success, we have asked for a common definition of equity to be developed and the framework to work towards this goal by April 15,” Boswell said. “We understand that this will not be achieved overnight or in one year’s work. To truly make progress we must be intentional in our definitions and our process.”

“We will do this in partnership with our students, staff and community. In a district where all mean alls we would expect no less.”

LPS Superintendent Steve Joel added this is work that never ends: “We know all means all. We know that we don’t ask kids how they got here.

We don’t even ask them why they got here. We don’t ask them how they express themselves. When they show up we give them all we have, and we can’t ever lose sight of that.”

Keynote speaker Toni Robinson from Discovery Education reminded the group this requires a human solution, not a technical solution.

“Equity is about identifying, rec-

ognizing, appreciating and valuing the humanness in me as I value it in you,” Robinson explained. “And if we approach it in that way, then we can’t lose. Every child that comes through that door deserves to be valued. Period.”

She also said this work was going to require some cost and a whole lot of courage.

“You will face things you don’t know, but you’ve got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. You have to be courageous to take some risks,”

“When you think about what we are going to be doing, there are going to be a lot of dimensions to this. But at the end of the day we have to be leaders of change. We have to be inspirers of doing things differently if we want to get different outcomes,” Joel said.

Teaching and learning continue over summer months

In July, about 160 seniors from Lincoln Public Schools completed their graduation requirements by finishing six weeks of summer school - and none were happier than Buay Gatluak, now a proud alumnus of Lincoln East High School.

He and his fellow graduates received their diplomas at Lincoln North Star High School, where the majority of summer school courses were held for students in grades nine through 12. Gatluak described the big day as the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

“I’m very excited about my future,” he said, proudly wearing a blue graduation robe. “I appreciate the support from everybody because there was a point in time when I didn’t know that anyone supported me.”

In addition to his family, he pointed to one person in particular: LPS Student Advocate Bill Bryant. “He really motivated me. He’s probably one of the biggest motivators that I’ve ever had.”

Like the new graduates, July 15 was a special day for Bryant.

“I’m as excited for them as I would be my own biological children,” he said.

More than 1,700 LPS high school students attended summer classes throughout the city. The overwhelming majority of them used summer school as a way to earn additional credits outside the traditional school year.

Course offerings included oral communications, geoscience, economics and government and politics.

But summer school wasn’t only for high school students.

Roughly 1,500 students in kindergarten through eighth grade attended summer school across the city - taking everything from math and writing to engineering design and culinary foundations. LPS provided early childhood services for more than 100 children ages birth to five in 11 preschool classrooms in all corners of the city.

And for the 21st year, the LPS Summer Technology Program challenged students in grades four through eight to expand their problem-solving skills and creativity.

Most of us can’t help but think about how things will be years down the road and wonder if we will make the right decisions along the way. You know the old saying, “If I knew then what I know now”?

Well, this blog imagines what advice you might find your future self, giving to your current high school senior self…

Hello, friend!

I’m writing to you from five years in the future.

I wanted you to know that life has been good to you: You graduated from high school, entered college, and completed your degree just one short year ago. You have a career now and are feeling pretty fortunate about the direction in which your life is headed. College was a wonderful time in your life! There were many lessons you learned along the way: some not so easy, and others the result of your diligent preparation and efforts.

The main reason I’m writing this letter is to reassure you and stress the things you will need to pay particular attention to when you enter college – all information I wish someone had shared with me ahead of time!

You may not always give people a chance or have an open mind at first, but once you let your guard down a bit, you will find that there are some pretty awesome people in this world! Also, make sure to always hold onto your values and surround yourself with people who uplift you.

Take advantage of the school’s study abroad program: At first, you may be afraid to broaden your horizons and might feel apprehensive about traveling to another country. Begin searching for jobs in the fall of your senior year of college: “Don’t wait” is the resounding theme here!! The job market is a fierce one, and you’ll quickly find that graduating from college doesn’t automatically guarantee you employment. You already know that it will take some searching, advisor meetings, and many applications and interviews before you find the right fit, so remember to put in the time and effort to do so!

So, past self, when you’re feeling overwhelmed – because you will – hang on tight and stay the course! You have many great people who will support you and see you through the college process. My final bit of advice for you is to ask questions, set goals, stay organized, and advocate for yourself. You will get out of college what you put into it…but don’t forget to enjoy the journey!

Finding the Right College

Step 1: Research colleges.

Start by asking your school counselor for college-search advice and resources. Here are other things you can do: • Learn about types of colleges and their degrees.

• Talk to admission representatives when they visit your high school.

• Attend a College Fair or Educational Planning Program where you can talk to college representatives.

• Use our College Profiles to match colleges with your interests.

• Another good resource is BigFuture from the College Board.

• Explore the websites of colleges that interest you.

Step 2: Go on campus visits.

This is the most important step you can take to determine if a school is the right fit for you!

Start your visits in the spring of your junior year and revisit your top choices in the fall of your senior year.

• Contact the admissions office at least two weeks in advance to schedule a campus visit.

• Visit while school is in session. You won’t get the full campus experience during school breaks, finals week, or summer.

• Meet with an admissions representative and financial aid counselor to discuss how to apply and pay for college.

• Ask to meet with faculty in your areas of interest.

• Ask a lot of questions!

Step 3. Narrow your choices.

Now that you’ve done your research and gone on campus visits, it’s time to compare notes and pick your top college choices. Compare schools based on academic programs, size, location, career preparation, internships, and social climate.

Step 4. Take entrance exams.

You’ll take the ACT in the spring of your junior year, and you may want to take the SAT as well.

Retake the exam(s) in the summer and fall – colleges will use your best score for scholarship and admission decisions.

Visit ACT and College Board for sample questions, test dates, registration, and fees.

If you attend a community college, you may be

required to take the Accuplacer or Companion placement tests.

Step 5. Apply for admission.

Be aware of deadlines and apply to your top colleges in the fall of your senior year. Most will require: • The application and fee • Official high school transcripts which will show: your grade point average and class rank, that you completed high school coursework, ACT/SAT test scores.

• If your school conducts an Apply2College event, you’ll get help with your applications during the school day. If not, use our college application checklist and other resources in the sidebar.

Step 6: Select a college.

In the spring of your senior year, compare your top colleges and make your final decision.

Then, complete these tasks: • Sign up for your college’s online student account or portal.

• Submit the application form and deposit for campus housing.

• Register for new-student orientation.

• Notify the other schools of your decision and decline their awards.

• Apply for student and/or parent loans, if needed.

Tips for senior success

Searching for scholarships.

Summer is in full swing, but your senior year is fast approaching. You may have heard horror stories about hectic senior years – and while some of the causes of senior year stress are unavoidable, there are certainly things you can begin to do this summer that will help your final year of high school go a bit more smoothly.

Begin Preparing for Your Post-Secondary Life Now. “What? Now?” Yes, now! Most students find that their senior year flies by and they have very little time to get to all the things they intended. While you should enjoy your final summer as a high schooler and do lots of fun stuff, if you begin getting ready for life after high school early, you will be relieved later when your senior year gets busy.

If you are planning to go to college immediately after high school, you may find it helpful to begin seriously researching and deciding which colleges you would like to apply to.

Many colleges open their application cycles in the fall or spring of your senior year. While you won’t be able to apply until then, having a list of colleges you would like to apply to will make the application process a lot smoother.

If you already have a list and are considering many different colleges, now would also be a good time to research further and narrow down your college choices.

Although you will have the best window for finding scholarships from the fall through early spring of your senior year, you can begin researching scholarships now. A good place to begin your search is on the websites of the colleges you are interested in: many colleges list “in-house” scholarships on their websites, usually under “financial aid”. Additionally, you may be able to find scholarships or grants available through your major(s) of interest, hobbies, or even organizations with whom you have volunteered.

If you are able to find out what some of those scholarships require, you can help yourself out by gathering necessary materials and drafting essays (both of which will save you time and make the scholarship application process easier). You might be able to reuse some of your essays for your college applications, which would also save you some time.

Research job shadow opportunities.

On top of being able to experience first-hand what a job in your field(s) of interest might entail, job shadowing looks great on a résumé or college application and gives you the opportunity to network. Even if you decide that you are actually not interested in that career after you see what it’s like, it’s great to have the experience so that you know ahead of time that it isn’t the right fit for you.

Get involved with volunteer opportunities.

Akin to job shadowing, volunteering may give you the opportunity to explore fields related to the career you are interested in – but don’t feel compelled to only volunteer in those fields. There are so many volunteerism opportunities available, including opportunities at animal shelters, hospitals, schools, and homeless shelters. Volunteering will not only bolster your résumé, but will also help you feel more fulfilled as an individual in giving back to your community.

The best thing you can do to decrease your senior year stress in advance is to avoid procrastination and begin preparing for things ASAP. If you can find time to pursue even one of the above suggestions, you should find some of your senior year stress alleviated.

Session 1 – Small Schools/Non-LPS Schools: Heat 1 starts at 8:30 a.m.

Schools will be divided into a Large School Division (470 or more students) and a Small School Division (469 or less students). Award plaques will be given in the two divisions and award winners will be determined by the percentage of their student body enrolled in the race. The top three schools in each division will receive a plaque. Schools with at least 10% of their student body registered will also receive a plaque.

Session 2 – Large Schools: Heat 1 starts at 10:30 a.m.

The only exceptions to the no-refund policy are: Entries received after the entry deadline; Entries of non-qualified entrants; Entries of those prohibited from participating due to errors made by the Nebraska Sports Council; Special circumstances as determined on an individual basis by the Board of Directors and requiring board action. NO REFUNDS WILL BE PERMITTED SIMPLY BECAUSE AN ATHLETE FAILS TO PARTICIPATE. 6. Agrees to allow the Nebraska Sports Council to photograph him/her during the Nebraska Sports Council events and to display his/her image in promotion of the Nebraska Sports Council programs including social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.

7. Pledges to adhere to the Nebraska Sports Council standards of sportsmanship and respect opponents, coaches, officials and spectators at all times by not engaging in verbal or physical altercations at any time before, during or after competition.
