Rousseau Elementary honored as national Blue Ribbon School Rousseau Elementary School has been named a 2018 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, one of only four in Nebraska and 349 nationwide.

The school in south Lincoln went through a rigorous application and review process that began more than a year ago. The school’s principal, Wendy Badje, was notified earlier this fall that Rousseau had been chosen for the honor, which designates the school as “Exemplary High Performing.” There are multiple criteria for the award, with an emphasis on state assessment scores. The Nebraska Department of Education nominated Rousseau.

But being a top-performing school is about more than assessment scores, Badje said Nov. 28 during a special all-school assembly to celebrate the award.

“Rousseau is not just about test scores. Over time we have built a reputation of being a positive and welcoming school,” Badje said, adding, “We want students and staff to be at Rousseau and love coming here each day.”

The assembly included performances by members of the Lincoln Southeast High School marching band and cheer squad, some of whom attended Rousseau; remarks from Badje and Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel; a video that documented a recent trip to Washington, D.C., by Badje and Assistant Principal Wendy Barry to accept the award; and another video that featured Rousseau students answering the question, “Why is Rousseau a Blue Ribbon School?”

Among their answers: • “Because we were not bullying and we were making good choices.”

• “Because the kids in the school love the teachers.”

• “Because teachers help us learn and also they are nice.”

• “Because our students were working hard and they were listening and they weren’t goofing around when it was time to learn.”

• “Because everybody does their best and we care about other people and we care about our teachers and we love to learn.”

Rousseau becomes the sixth LPS school to earn the Blue Ribbon designation, now in its 36th year. Other winning schools were Riley Elementary School (2011); Norwood Park Elementary School (2012); Southeast High School (1988); Lincoln East Junior and Senior High School (1983); and Lincoln High School (1983).

Rousseau students and staff wore blue ribbons at the Nov. 28 event. Those ribbons will fade over time, but they’ll wear this badge of honor for the rest of their lives.

“This is a really, really big deal,” said Superintendent Joel. “For the rest of your life, you’re going to be able to say that you were taught in one of the best schools in the country.”

January TeamMates of the Month

Jay and Dakkon: Exploring Together “Dakkon and I enjoy doing geeky things,” says Jay, a TeamMates mentor since 2014.

He and his mentee, now a freshman at Lincoln High School, first met when Dakkon was a fourth-grader at Saratoga Elementary.

“We like creating things” Dakkon says.

One of Dakkon’s favorite memories is the time they made origami gifts for friends and family members. “Decorating birthday cookies was cool, too,” he adds.

Dakkon looks forward to his weekly meetings with Jay. Initially matched during second semester, they met throughout the summer their first year together. They have been members of the “24 or More Club” each year since.

Early in their mentor/mentee relationship, Dakkon’s father moved out of town, and Dakkon was struggling. When Jay shared that his dad had moved away when he was young, too, they discovered a common bond.

“Although we hit it off easily from the start, our relationship has become much more comfortable,” Jay says. He believes he has learned lessons from his mentee.

“He’s taught me how to keep going, even when life is tough.”

Over the years, Jay has seen Dakkon transform from a little boy to an intelligent young man. “He’s taking harder classes and growing in knowledge. He’s very smart,” Jay says with admiration.

“When he talks about math formulas, I have no clue!”

“Although we hit it off easily from the start, our relationship has become much more comfortable. He’s taught me how to keep going, even when life is tough.”

Both Jay and Dakkon believe they will remain friends beyond high school graduation.

Dakkon plans to become a TeamMate when he gets older. “It’s so fun and enjoyable, and TeamMates can meet for a long time,” Dakkon says. “It makes an impact.”

Jay agrees. “You get to have an experience, watch someone grow and get involved. You get to give back.”

Campbell Elementary stresses reading fluency as part of improvement plan Campbell Elementary School is focused on improving students’ reading fluency this year, one part of a School Improvement Plan - or SIP - that identifies three areas of potential improvement for the north Lincoln school.

Every school within Lincoln Public Schools develops its own SIP, which involves analyzing achievement data, finding strengths and weaknesses, setting an improvement goal and implementing a plan to improve student learning - which is always the ultimate goal.

At Campbell, a team of staff members dedicated to developing the school’s SIP attended an LPS professional development workshop last summer, where they reviewed the school’s report card data and identified one area in particular they felt could be improved: reading fluency, which is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression.

Since then, Campbell teachers have received additional training to better learn how to align instruction in guided reading with each student’s reading level. Every week, students practice reading fluency, set goals and track their progress.

“As a staff, we have learned so much, and we feel like we have just begun,” said Campbell Principal Julie Lawler.

Besides students’ daily classroom work, Lawler and her staff are addressing reading fluency in a number of creative ways: • In October, they hosted a parent engagement event called "Books and Bedtime," when parents and guardians, students and staff came to school in their pajamas and read books together. Staff highlighted fluency and provided reading tips for the adults.

• Also in October, Campbell launched a schoolwide daily reading activity using bingo reading cards. Students are challenged to complete the kindergarten-second grade or third-fifth grade card, which have various reading challenges for families to do together. Examples include: reading a nonfiction book; reading a book to someone; reading outside; reading without being reminded; constructing a “fort” to read inside; and reading their spelling list to an adult. So far, more than 120 students have earned a "bingo" or a "blackout bingo."

• Campbell held a schoolwide challenge in November that involved all students keeping track of books they have read "cover to cover."

• Some fourth- and fifth-graders practice reading a picture book, then read that book to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students.

Sarah Salem, LPS director of continuous improvement and professional learning, said Campbell’s work on reading fluency is a great example of a SIP put into action.

“A school improvement plan is intended to focus an entire school on a goal using research-based strategies for curriculum, teaching and assessment - and that’s exactly what Campbell is doing for its reading fluency goal,” Salem said. “That’s just one example of the great work being done at schools all across the district.”

What is School Improvement?

School improvement is an ongoing process in each building that involves analyzing achievement data, finding strengths and weaknesses, setting an improvement goal, and implementing a plan to improve student learning. The plan depends upon the improvement of instruction and professional development for teachers. The goal of school improvement is to improve learning.

How does the school improvement process work?

The professional staff in each building conducts an analysis of national, state and district assessments.

The analysis reveals strengths and weaknesses in student performance, which provides the basis for the building-wide school improvement goals. In turn, teachers work with their colleagues to improve teaching and learning in each classroom. At the heart of the school improvement process is learning for each and every student. Until we have reached each student in each classroom we are not done!

How are schools held accountable for their goals?

All schools are accountable for improving learning every year. Learning data and instructional strategies are monitored throughout the process to determine whether learning has improved. Every five years, a visitation team comprised of experts from outside of the district meet with the school improvement teams at each school. The visitation team reviews the school’s goals and improvement plans in order to provide feedback on strengths and weaknesses. The purpose of their visit is to evaluate the progress of the improvement plan and offer support and suggestions.

Each building uses the school improvement process to set a building-wide goal for improving student learning. The school improvement plan is developed to focus the entire school on the goal using research-based strategies for curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Pausing at year’s end to celebrate significant achievements From the blog of Dr. Steve Joel, LPS Superintendent

On more than one occasion in my career (and personal life) I have been appropriately reminded that periodically, I need to pause a moment to recognize and celebrate our successes and achievements. I am a goal oriented superintendent, so I tend to work toward achieving an objective and upon reaching it – move onto the next challenge as quickly as possible. While this may work for me, most professionals appreciate knowing that their work has been acknowledged.

So I would like to pause a moment to recognize and celebrate a few recent and significant achievements at Lincoln Public Schools.

We have once again had a near perfect audit of our school district finances. When you think about a more than $400 million budget with many departments, this accomplishment is monumental and demonstrates the incredible level of effective and efficient systems and protocols we have in place to handle public dollars.

We received a five-year state accreditation report demonstrating that our school improvement system and corresponding academic results were “awesome.” In fact, the leader of the External Visitation Team – with more than 20 educators from across the state – explained their recommendations were designed to move us from “awesome” to “more awesome.” This is a major tribute to our entire team of LPS educators and leaders.

Just this week we received the 2018 National Champion of Computer Science Award for the work we have done developing a sound Computer Science curriculum, including lessons in coding that begin in kindergarten and continue for all students. This is only the second year of this prestigious award, in fact, San Francisco Public won last year. To think that we have catapulted to the top of the country, once again demonstrates the commitment of our computer science teachers and leaders. We understand this is the future for many of our students.

With 2018 almost behind us, we turn our attention to 2019 in anticipation of another great year for our students, families and community. We’ll launch the new year by convening the Superintendent’s Facilities Advisory Committee, a community task force that will study and analyze facility needs for LPS – then offer suggestions of how to address those needs into the future.

Meanwhile, as we close the 2018 year, I would like to thank you for your support of LPS.

Northeast High students chosen to display art in Nebraska Capitol Lincoln Northeast High School advanced art students answered the call from Nebraska’s First Lady and submitted their ornament designs for a chance to be featured on the official holiday tree at the State Capitol. Five of the students, along with their instructor, Michelle Hrbek, had their work selected and it’s now on display to the public in the State Capitol Rotunda.

Artists across the state were asked to create ornaments in the shape of Nebraska that represent the state: its diverse natural, cultural and agricultural heritage; the state’s vibrant history; a public place or location with historic or cultural significance; or a depiction of Nebraska today.

With more than 316 proposals submitted, only 166 designs were chosen.

The Northeast students and their families were invited to a special reception with the other artists. The event was hosted by First Lady Susanne Shore at the Governor’s Mansion on Nov. 8.

Students’ love of reading grows, thanks to annual Harvest of Books

E

very year, the Lincoln Education Association (LEA) in conjunction with KFOR radio distributes free books to Lincoln second-grade students.

Since its inception in 1997, the Harvest of Books has distributed more than 180,000 books. On Nov. 20, books were distributed across the city, including at Randolph Elementary, where representatives from LEA, KFOR and Indigo Bridge Books were on hand to read to students.

LPS named best school district in the country for computer science Lincoln Public Schools has been honored as the best school district in the country for computer science instruction.

The Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and Code.org named LPS the “Champion for Computer Science” school district winner for 2018. LPS Curriculum Specialist for Computer Science Kent Steen traveled to Seattle the weekend of Dec. 8 to accept the award on the school district’s behalf from, among others, Melinda Gates. The award ceremony was part of the Computer Science Education Week kickoff event.

“To say that I am proud is an understatement,” Steen said. “This award is a reflection of the past five years of hard work, leadership, willingness to learn and change, and passion for bringing computer science to all LPS students.”

“Our staff and students continue to innovate and demonstrate the curiosity and dedication that make this school district special."

LPS Interim Assistant to the Superintendent for Instruction Matt Larson heaped praise on everyone who made such an honor possible.

"This is a tremendous honor for Lincoln Public Schools, not only for Kent Steen, but for all our computer science teachers from kindergarten through 12th grade, staff, community partners and especially our students who have worked so hard to make this significant honor possible,” Larson said. “Our staff and students continue to innovate and demonstrate the curiosity and dedication that make this school district special."

It’s the second year for the “Champion in Computer Science” school district award. The San Francisco Unified School District took home the honor last year. This year’s runner-up was the Riverside (Calif.) Unified School District.

CSTA and Code.org said LPS won the award because of its efforts to make “computer science education accessible for everyone.” LPS now offers computer science courses in all 39 elementary schools, eight of 12 middle schools and all six high schools.

LPS also is a founding member of the national CS for All Consortium, whose mission is “to make high-quality computer science an integral part of the educational experience of all K-12 students and teachers and to support student pathways to college and career success.”

“It mirrors what we believe at LPS: all means all,” Steen said.

Tricks to a healthier New Year with your family

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS Wellness Facilitator Healthy New Year! Isn’t that what we wish for our family? Those less-thanhealthy moments remind us that nothing compares to being at full function, though we tend to forget quickly how valuable our health is. Here are some sneaky tips and tricks that may help your family have a healthy New Year.

Towel trading, door knobs and remotes. For seasonal sickness such as colds and influenza, yes, hand washing is key, but are you all wiping your hands on the same towels? Frequently switching out hand towels and sanitizing remote controls, gaming controls and door knobs might be major difference makers for stopping the flu from getting you.

Holding a sleep summit. Part of health, as well as school success, is tied to being better rested. Have a family meeting about how you might each improve your sleep. Your kids might have great ideas about what could help them tuck in earlier and they will be better bought into the process. I’ve done this even with toddlers included and it has worked. Steady bedtimes lead to lower stress mornings. It just might help you get some extra winks too.

Consider a family snack. We know that family meal times have abundant benefits to kids; in every way from better nutrition, to better grades to even less drug use. However, families are complicated, and schedules are tricky. If you can’t gather everyone for a family meal, consider a family snack time. It’s all about staying connected, communicating and having eyeball time, so celebrate any time you might connect. If fruits and veggies are included, it’s a bonus.

Fit in active family fun. Each family is unique, so what is considered fun for your crew is all about you. Be it building a snowman, sledding, skating or indoor winter fun such as bowling or basketball, do what you can to create opportunities for active family fun. Have your kids show you how to use Go Noodle for those less than ideal outdoor days. It’s a huge hit with our elementary and middle school students. It’s a great excuse for you to fit in some precious movement time while helping your kids get their winter wiggles out of their systems. Have a blast.

Talk family goal setting. Building a healthy family bucket list is a great yearly tradition. We have our kids build a list of goals and then build one for our family. You might be surprised the impact of this little activity to better your health and the health of those you love.

Danek honored with prestigious statewide award Lincoln Board of Education Vice President Kathy Danek received the prestigious Ann Mactier Leadership for Learning Award Nov. 16 during a ceremony at the Nebraska Association of School Boards conference in LaVista.

The Nebraska Association of School Boards and the Nebraska State Board of Education jointly sponsor this award that recognizes local school board members for their policy leadership and contributions to curriculum and instruction in Nebraska public schools.

Danek has served on the Board of Education

since 2001, representing District 1 in northeast Lincoln, and her service includes four terms as president of the board – as well as serving as president of the state association.

Elliott Elementary builds ‘houses,’ creates a home “A house does not make a home,” the saying goes. Students and staff at Elliott Elementary School would disagree.

This year, the school in central Lincoln is building community and a more positive environment through the creation of “houses.” Once a month, students split up into their assigned mixed-grade groups — their houses — and participate in activities with varying themes.

In August, teachers and students got to know each and agreed on a house name — for example, the Rainbow Phoenixes. In September, students created their house flag. In October, houses focused on the theme of hope and what’s necessary for hopefulness. Students made “Take What You Need” posters with tabs that could be ripped off the bottom ­— each tab with words such as kindness, love and support. In November, the theme was self-belief.

“There’s definitely been a lot of work on peer-to-peer relationships, as well as student-to-teacher relationships and just having those older kids setting that great example for the younger students,” said second-grade teacher Annette Luce, who leads the Rainbow Phoenixes house. “It’s been really nice having those leadership opportunities.”

During November house time, Luce began by having students sit in a circle, with each of them asking the names of the students to their left and right. The students then went around the circle and repeated the names. Other activities that day had students describe themselves with one positive word and say one of their talents.

Tracy, a fifth-grade student in the Rainbow Phoenixes house, said she’s enjoyed being able to mentor the younger students in her group.

“It feels kind of proud that you can help a younger kid. To me, it feels kind of accomplishing, like I did something big,” she said.

As part of the November self-belief theme, Luce shared with students a valuable lesson about mistakes.

“It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to not be perfect at everything,” she said. “The important thing is we never give up.”

That sounds like a home.

LPS students jump at chance to see ballet in action

"Backstage at the Ballet" is an artist-in-residence program sponsored by the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Guild. This year, artists from the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company spent the last week of November at Brownell Elementary School. The company hosted three learning stations for each class that provided hands-on experience in costuming, makeup and choreography. On the last day of the residency, dancers from the ballet company performed excerpts from "The Nutcracker" for the entire school.

November Learning: Lincoln Public Schools welcomes all Lincoln Public Schools opens its doors to embrace families and students from around the world through the Welcome Center, located inside Park Middle School in south central Lincoln. That was the topic for the November Learning Lunch on Nov. 20, featuring Laura Salem, supervisor of the LPS English Language Learner program; Kelley Veselinov, English Language Learner assessment specialist; and Magdalena Benton, a bilingual liaison for LPS who walked through those Welcome Center doors years ago.

Lincoln Public Schools has a diverse student population, with approximately 3,000 English Language Learners in our schools - from across the community - and these students and their families represent approximately 154 different countries and speak 142 different languages.

When LPS learns about a family wishing to enroll, students are first given a home language survey that asks the required questions: What language the student first learned to speak; what language is spoken most often by the student; and what language is primarily used in the student’s home? If any language other than English is given for the answer to any of these questions, then the family will be referred to the Welcome Center.

Once at the Center, an assessment specialist and bilingual liaison work with the family to fill out the required forms and asses the students in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The results of the assessment are then shared with the parents so they can decide whether to accept or decline the services. The enrollment process is then completed at the school where the children will attend.

Veselinov recounted some of the stories written by the middle and high school children during the writing assessment: Write about a person who has changed your lives.

“So many of the students’ writing has brought me to tears. They write about their parents and if it wasn’t for them they wouldn’t be in this country safe and getting an education. They sat in their homes in their old country, afraid to leave because of bombs exploding all around them.”

Benton told her own story of coming to Lincoln as a little girl from a foreign country, and benefiting from her education at Lincoln Public Schools and about her mission now as an adult.

“We do this work because we love it. I do it because I see myself in these children who are walking in our doors. I see them. I know what they are going through. I know what their excitement is and I know some of the challenges they are going to have. I want to help them through those challenges because I know education is an opportunity for them.”

At the end of the lunch during the question and answer period, Christy Hargesheimer (Tisdale) - one of Benton’s first teachers in Lincoln from years ago - surprised and introduced herself to her former student, and the two tearfully connected again.

December Learning Lunch highlights efforts to recruit, retain talent in LPS Lincoln Public Schools is filled with thousands of talented staff and educators - so what does it take to recruit and retain these employees who are so vital to the education of our children?

That was the topic of the Dec. 11 LPS Learning Lunch, "Recruitment and Retention of Talent in LPS," presented by Eric Weber, LPS associate superintendent for human resources.

Recent numbers illustrate the size of the challenge. LPS hired 446 new teachers prior to this school year and 2,020 during the last five years. Also this year, LPS hired 70 new employees in leadership positions, such as principals, associate principals and supervisors.

“Anywhere between 85 to 95 percent of our budget at any given point has something to do with people, so people are our greatest asset,” Weber said. “Our investment in people is very important, in terms of getting the very best and keeping the very best.”

Weber highlighted the multiple strategies and initiatives in place to recruit and retain the very best to LPS. All of this work is guided by the LPS Strategic Plan for 2017-2022, approved by the Lincoln Board of Education.

One of the pillars of this five-year plan is “Support for Educators,” which includes the following goal: Research and implement strategies to recruit, hire, develop, support and retain the highest quality and diverse staff. Within that goal are four action steps, which Weber touched upon during his presentation with examples of the work being done: • Recruit a staff reflective of student diversity. LPS has increased its number of diverse hires in recent years, thanks to enhanced efforts to identify potential employees as early as high school through The Career Academy and, once they are hired, making them feel comfortable in their new positions through events such as the Multicultural Dinner Reception.

• Expand leadership development and continuity planning. Leadership LPS, now in its second year, is a rigorous, 18-month program for employees who aspire to be principals. It’s highly selective, with about 18 employees chosen annually.

It falls under the “grown your own” philosophy that creates a pipeline of future leaders.

• Review and enhance mentor program for new educators and teachers in new environments. Newly hired teachers now benefit from an assigned mentor for their first three years on the job; a Google+ site where they can interact with fellow new teachers and other LPS departments; an expansive mentoring handbook; and observation times when they learn from “master teachers.”

• Review and enhance support systems for educators. LPS has now turned its attention to this final action step, with plans in the works for the upcoming year.

With all of these efforts to recruit and retain talent, Weber said, it’s always important to remember the purpose behind it all.

“The work we do is for them,” Weber said, pointing to a photo of students on the screen behind him.

Eighth-grade high school informational meetings 2018–2019 High school enrollment is right around the corner for you and your eighth-grade student. The following information can help your family make a successful transition into ninth grade.

Parent/Guardian Informational Meetings An important component in the transition process are the informational meetings at the six LPS high schools* in January. These meetings are designed to welcome you and your student into the high school and meet with counselors and instructional staff to learn about the opportunities available at that school. Since students entering the ninth grade may choose the high school they want to attend in LPS, these meetings have been scheduled to give you the opportunity to attend more than one high school meeting before the Jan. 31 deadline for submitting the “High School Choice” form.

The schedule for informational meetings:

Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 – East High School – 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 – Northeast High School – 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019 – Southwest High School – 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Jan. 14, 2019 – Southeast High School – 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019 – North Star High School – 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019 – Lincoln High School – 6:30 p.m.

*Some students choose to participate in one of the specialty programs offered in LPS: Science Focus Program, Arts & Humanities Focus Program, Bryan Focus Program, International Baccalaureate (IB) and The Career Academy. Students enrolled in a specialty program are also enrolled as a student at one of the six comprehensive LPS high schools.

Information about the focus schools and specialty programs offered at LPS can be found under the “Schools” tab at www.lps.org or by contacting a school counselor. Please note that transportation is now available to students attending focus programs.

High School Counselor Visits In February and early March, high school counselors will come to the LPS middle schools to meet with students who are planning to enroll at their high school. At that time, high school counselors will discuss graduation requirements, answer questions about the high school curriculum and register eighth-grade students for ninth-grade courses. Students will be participating in pre-registration activities with their eighth-grade counselors before the high school counselor visits. Dates for the high school counselor visits will be communicated by high schools and middle schools. Please watch for that information.

Among the most important decisions being made by students and their parents/guardians are those related to the high school they will attend and the courses they will choose to meet graduation requirements and support their educational and career plans.

We look forward to your attendance at the informational meetings so counselors, department chairpersons and administrators will be able to greet you and assist you and your student as they begin the transition from middle school to high school.
