Back to school!

Summer was great, now it’s time to educate.

The 2017-18 school year kicked off for kindergarten through ninth grade students at Lincoln Public Schools on Monday, August 14.

It was an exciting day across the district with the new Moore Middle School opening it’s doors to students for the very first time. Humann Elementary School students were back in their building after being relocated for one year during remodeling. Randolph Elementary and West Lincoln Elementary schools also completed major building projects.

An array of projects help business students demonstrate mastery Nine LPS business teachers earn state BEST honor Nine teachers from five high schools and programs in Lincoln Public Schools were honored for their efforts in teaching business classes to students.

Teachers whose professional activities influenced business and marketing education in Nebraska during the past year received BEST — Belong, Excel, Study and Travel — Awards for their involvement in professional associations, community and school activities, professional leadership development, and service to the business education profession.

The Nebraska Department of Education recognized 52 Nebraska business teachers at the Nebraska Career Education Conference in June in Kearney.

BEST awards exemplify superior qualities, including dedication to students, community outreach, and continual classroom improvement efforts. The following individuals contributed significantly to the quality of education in their community and the state:

Here are her responses to questions about what concepts students learn, how they learn and how the curriculum is changing for the better for students.

Why do you feel business is a good high school topics for students?

Business is such an important topic for high school students both in their personal and potential careers. Courses such as Take Charge and Business Economics can help students personally as these courses allow students to gain understanding in finance, basic economic topics in addition to career exploration with special emphasis in financial aid, scholarship application, and resume building. I frequently encounter adults of all ages that wish they would have paid closer attention to these topics while in high school.

In LPS business departments, we have a multiple array of computer courses where students can learn specific software applications that they may use in post-secondary and/or in their chosen careers.

Digital Media and Intro to Digital Design allow students to be creative with video and design projects. Warren Buffet has emphasized that accounting is the language of business. Business Administration is one of the most popular college majors and accounting is typically one of the requirements for that major. High school accounting gives a strong foundation to those students who pursue business in college. Sports and Entertainment Marketing allows students to explore careers in the popular areas of sports and entertainment in addition to understanding basic marketing principles.

What types of projects do the students complete, and what do you see from them that assures they are growing their understanding?

Our students complete projects of all kinds including video productions, accounting simulations, job resumes and interviews.

Electronic portfolios are popular ways for students to demonstrate their skill levels. One particular project this past year in Intro to Digital Design was the designing of a Rocket Booster plaque. One student’s design was chosen to be used for the plaque and that student was recognized at a school assembly when the plaque (with the student’s design) was presented to the individual Booster by Kurt Glathar, our principal.

A number of students in our Information Technology 1 and 2 classes have also been given the opportunity to become nationally certified in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Another certification earned by our students this past year was W!SE financial literacy testing. Web Page Programming is a class where students are designing web sites. What it takes to graduate Graduation from Lincoln Public Schools will require the accumulation of 245 credit hours in grades 9-12, subject to the following: Within the 245 credit expectation for graduation from high school (grades 9-12), certain areas of study totaling 187.5 credit hours will be required of students. The credits listed are to be earned by taking courses.

just textbooks and tests as we have had students participate in Stock Market simulations and recently a team of students earned the right to attend a finance challenge at UNL where they presented in front of a panel of judges a financial plan for a family with real life financial difficulties and needs. (see attached photo) What trends have you seen in recent years in the curriculum for business?

Business has always had the unique challenge of staying current with technology trends of the business world. Our students at LPS are fortunate to have current technology tools and software available to them as they prepare for their post-secondary and various career endeavors. I anticipate we will continue to see our business curriculum more involved in the computer science as businesses are continuing to request students with that background. As in all curriculum areas, using a variety of technology and tools are important to improve student engagement and learning.

What hopes do you have for your students as you refine your lesson plans?

It has and always will be important for me to make classroom topics relevant to students’ lives. A highlight in my teaching is when former students share that what they have learned in one of my classes has helped them in some way — either professionally or personally. It always makes my day!

Major: Mass Media with an emphasis in Video Production What was the most valuable thing learned, or class taken, or activity at your high school that helped you after high school?

Don’t take people’s words too seriously.

What neat/cool/awesome projects have you worked on in college?

I work for a radio station at my university and when I’m not working I’m helping out for the television station on campus. It’s great to get hands on while in college so that way when it comes to finding a job you will have no problem.

How has college helped you shape your professional plans?

It has helped me realize what my strong points are and what I need to work on better. I have found out that I am a natural leader and that will really help me later on in life. It’s the small things you realize about yourself when you are in a stressful situation.

What advice would you give to students in the final year/s of high school?

If you don’t know what you’re gonna study in college, don’t worry about it. You can always go and take a few classes and find out what you like the best. You don’t want to be in a job that you hate for the next 50 years. Even if it takes 7 years to graduate college, it doesn’t mater because you know in your heart that this is the degree and job you want.

What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned in high school?

Make sure you get involved. My first two years I did almost nothing other than my regular classes, which made me feel kinda left out. My junior and senior years I started doing a lot more, and I couldn’t believe how much better it felt to be involved and to be doing things other than just napping til dinner and then doing homework.

How do you handle the times when you aren’t sure if you would reach your personal goals?

Even when I start to doubt myself, I try not to let it stress me out too much. You will always feel this way sometimes, the best thing to do is focus on what you can do, rather than doubting yourself. Might as well try your best instead of worrying about failing.

What is your most memorable moment with your activities (whether or not you hit the game winning home run, or had the lead in a play, or likewise)?

Definitely the most memorable moment for me was when the cast list for my senior year musical, Cinderella, came out and I saw that I got the lead male role, Prince Topher. Being in my last high school show, and that I love musicals, I was ecstatic to get the opportunity to play a lead, especially in such a fun and alluring musical.

What is your favorite class in school, whether currently or in the past? Describe it.

AP Psychology. I found it very interesting to learn about why people behave the way they do and what influences their mind. We also had many fun interactive activities that made it a whole lot more fun.

What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned in high school?

That there are deadlines for things, and high school is a time where you are learning who you are and/or who you could be. So take advantage of every opportunity that life throws at you.

How do you handle the times when you aren’t sure if you would reach your personal goals?

It’s hard but, I would always try and look at the bright side of everything. I am a very optimistic person, so finding the happiness out of something comes very easy to me.

I remember feeling like I was on top of the world when playing with my team. Whether we won some or lost some, we still stuck together as a team and made sure to also have fun.

What to consider when choosing a college Start narrowing your college choices during your junior year. This will give you more time to determine which school is the best fit, and to meet admission and financial aid deadlines.

Answer these questions to get started:

Avoid these mistakes:

What do you want to study?

If you know what you want to study, research schools that offer degree programs in that area. If you don’t know what to study, it’s okay. Many students begin college “undeclared” and some start at a community college and then transfer to a four-year school.

Don’t limit your search to familiar institutions. Just because your parents or siblings went to a certain college doesn’t mean it’s right for you.

What kind of school do you want to attend?

Do you prefer a large university or a small college? Are you interested in a community college? What kind of student/teacher ratio do you want?

Don’t limit your search to colleges you think you can afford. The more expensive the school, the more financial aid you may be eligible to receive. Do some financial aid-related research (using net price calculators, talking to an EducationQuest specialist, or a representative from the college) before crossing these schools off your list.

What can you afford?

Consider the overall cost of college: tuition, room and board, books, transportation costs, and personal expenses. Determine what you and your parents can afford to pay out-of-pocket and plan to apply for financial aid to make up the difference. Calculate the loan debt your family may need to incur for your college education.

Where do you want to go to college?

Do you want to live close to home and commute? Do you want to be in a large city or a small town? How big of a factor is out-of-state or private school tuition? If you want to go out of state, investigate reciprocity programs such as the Midwest Student Exchange Program.

Don’t choose a college just because it’s near your boyfriend or girlfriend. The school may not be a good match for you – and he or she may not be either!

Don’t insist on an out-of-state school just because you want to “get away.” Even if you attend college in your hometown, you can still “get away” by staying on campus most weekends.

The fortitude to finish A record number 1,636 students gave up their summer fun to come back to school and earn credits over six weeks at Lincoln North Star High School.

Some of the students were there to get a jump start on their high school classes, earning credits for required classes while avoiding school year scheduling conflicts with the courses they find interesting. For some, they were given support for English Language Learning and Special Education Services.

For 120 seniors, completing summer school means earning the last few credits so they can achieve a high school diploma.

Approximately 50 students chose to walk across the stage on July 14, in a special ceremony with family, friends and school staff to celebrate the end of their high school journey.

“Congratulations is a small word with big implications,” said Lincoln Public School Board of Education Member Kathy Danek. “Because what we are really talking about is decision making...Being here today as graduates, completing the requirements, you made the right decision. Not just for today, but for your future.”

From conference to classrooms: Event captures momentum of effective school-wide and classroom practices Lincoln Public Schools hosted its first ever statewide conference this summer dedicated to Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports — commonly referred to as PBiS — centered around effective practices in schools.

Just how popular is the topic? The first-time conference drew more than 600 participants from 40 school districts and educational service units (ESUs) across Nebraska, and members of the Nebraska Department of Education, as well as professionals from colleges and universities.

“We are incredibly lucky in LPS to be in a position to provide such high-quality professional learning to our staff and to educators across the state,” said Sarah Salem, director of continuous improvement and professional learning. “The expertise of teachers and administrators in our schools is truly remarkable.”

How will the information gleaned from the conference manifest in a classroom?

Zeman Elementary School Principal Kristi Schirmer shared a little insight into what she listens for when observing staff: “I hear four-to-one praise ratio, I hear teachers telling students, “great job,” but not just ‘great job,’ but ‘great job. You are right,” that specific information and that specific praise,” Schirmer said.

Seth Lutz, assistant principal at McPhee Elementary School, said, “We will talk about looking at the person, saying ‘OK,’ and doing things right away. And also if students need a little more, we talk about not pressing the issue, but having some statements to tell the students that we are going to talk about his behavior later, so we can talk more about the skill instead of the behavior.”

Session presenters included local, state and national experts, covering topics from classroom management to alternatives to suspensions, and from building positive relationships to being proactive with early signs of students struggling in class.

Scott Eckman, a supervisor in the LPS special education department, said the collaboration between staff and districts on these topics has been a big benefit.

“We have been really trying hard to collaborate with districts outside of Lincoln Public Schools,” he said. “We are seeing that a lot of colleagues from neighboring districts want to know this information and are coming here to learn with us, which is been really exciting.”

LPS middle schools also had the opportunity to work one-on-one with Kent McIntosh, the conference keynote speaker, to look at their school data, systems and goals for the next school year.

A dog’s life at summer school Three furry friends were on hand to assist the approximately 1,700 Lincoln Public Schools high school students attending classes this summer at Lincoln North Star High School.

“It helps break any tension in the classroom,” English teacher Jacob Schneider said, noting how having dogs greeting students sets the tone for the class. “This helps kids calm down and helps students actively participate in class.”

These pooches aren’t just someone’s pet that they decide to bring to class, but highly trained and LPS-certified therapy dogs that are recertified biannually.

In fact, during sumer school in the special education classroom, Etta - one of the three summer school dogs - basked in a party to celebrate her sixth birthday.

“The students are always excited to see her and they were asking questions like ‘how old is she’ and ‘when is her birthday’,” said Pam Robinson, summer school principal. “So we decided the students would like to celebrate her birthday and this is a second year they have thrown her a party.”

The party allowed the students to practice their writing with birthday cards, and read out loud to them in their class. Etta paid special attention to each of the students as they wished her a happy birthday.

“The student may not be wanting to do an activity, but if it is for Etta, they are much more willing,” added Robinson.

Robinson said each dog’s role in the school varied.

“There may be students that have a crisis at home, or come in upset.

The dog is a calming factor. Students become more comfortable talking if they are petting the dog. Students read to the dogs or practice their speeches and they help the students relax. Maybe a student is unwilling to do a task, but are more willing if the dog is present. Some students like to be given a task, and it’s a reason for them to attend school.”

Learning to LOVE science

4-H Information Night

with an award-winning science teacher Will Smith of Lincoln High School has been named the teacher of the year by the local chapter of the Air Force Association. We talk about how he teaches students to love science, how he balances scientific facts with open discussions and how his life as a young student influences him as a teacher.

Smith has taught for 10 years, including the last eight years at Lincoln High School. He currently teaches honors physical science to freshmen, physics to juniors and seniors, and a physics course for International Baccalaureate students.

Jumping into school Kindergarten students at Campbell Elementary School got a jumpstart on the school year with a special ten day program.

Kindergarten Jumpstart prepared incoming kindergartners by familiarizing them with the daily schedule, their fellow classmates, and the rules of the classroom.

Kindergarten teacher, Tiffany Geis, elaborated, “The focus of Jumpstart this year was to work on getting to know the students better, build relationships with them and their families. We also did an academic focus on their names as well as numbers.”

Holmes teacher earns Junior Achievement ‘Elementary Educator of Year’ honor Jen Barton, a fourth-grade teacher at Holmes Elementary School, has been honored by Junior Achievement of Lincoln as elementary educator of the year.

JA of Lincoln works to empower community volunteers to teacher JA curriculum - financial literacy, money management, entrepreneurship, and business ethics, and more, to classrooms in the area. Barton explains how JA impacts the students in her classroom at Holmes.

What is the value of having JA in your classroom?

I believe having a volunteer from the community come into the classroom to teach about the business world is very powerful for students. My fourth graders know they are learning from someone who is living and experiencing the business world day in and day out.

To learn about business skills from someone who is an expert and not their teacher seems to be more meaningful to students.

How do you see the long-term impact of their role in teaching curriculum, even after they have left the classroom?

It won’t be long before these students are applying for their first jobs and going in for interviews. The knowledge they gain from having JA will certainly help them confidently reach their goals in the future.

What is the value to students of having ‘another voice’ to compliment what you teach?

In our fourth-grade curriculum, students read about kid entrepreneurs and the history of money. For a JA volunteer to come and teach my students about business reinforces the vocabulary and concepts we have learned about in class. During JA, students also learn about other kids their age who have started businesses.

Having someone outside of our school community share their expertise is valuable because there are often life skill lessons that compliment what has been taught in the classroom.

Play ball!

Under blue skies and picture-perfect weather, Lincoln Public Schools took about 3,000 fifth graders out to the ballgame in August in the annual Lincoln Saltdog game celebration of late summer.

In what has become a tradition – with support from hundreds of LPS staff and a ballet of school buses – the event at Haymarket Park focuses on lessons of good sportsmanship, character, emotional and social learning, and of course great food and fun.

“My daughter is in college now, but she was in the very first fifth grade class who attended the Saltdog game – and it is one of her greatest memories from the time she spent in school,” according to Matt Avey, LPS curriculum specialist for Health and Physical Fitness.

Avey stressed the teachable moments throughout the ballpark – from promoting physical activity to learning to be a courteous spectator – in this tenth annual Saltdog outing for all fifth graders from all 39 LPS elementary schools.

Rousseau Elementary School fifth grader Oakley Meister thought the day was the ideal way to celebrate his 11th birthday. “I really like school, I like math best, but it’s fun to celebrate my birthday at a baseball game – and not in a classroom…I’m super-excited, because we get to eat good stuff, too.”

LPS students played a big part in the entire day’s activities with fifth graders performing the Star Spangled Banner, acting as “Watchdogs” (students who get to follow players onto the field during introductions), serving as mini-managers and even helping to announce the game.

“I love this day,” Avey said, smiling. “And just look at the weather.

This is really a perfect day.”

Students find that ‘Science Rocks’ in moon’s shadow The theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” roared over the loud speakers as a field of 800 Pound Middle School kids shrieked with joy when the solar eclipse reached totality on August 21 – all of them gazing toward the skies for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In fact, they were joined by shouts, oohs and ahs, and moments of awe – “science rocks!” – from students across the community with more than 50,000 Lincoln Public Schools students, educators and volunteers standing in the shadow of the moon when a strange twilight descended over our schools.

“Look up at the sky,” Pound Principal Chris Deibler shouted over loud speakers, “this is a sight you won’t ever see again in Lincoln, Nebraska in your lifetime…Look at the sunrise all around the horizon…Feel the temperature…Really enjoy this moment.”

“We have been running a playlist of eclipse music today, we have practiced with the ‘magic whistle,’ and I think everyone is pretty excited about this experience,” Deibler said.

After an uncertain forecast, it was as if the clouds parted early in honor of Lincoln’s solar totality allowing LPS staff and students – first graders through seniors – to peer upward with their special safety eclipse glasses and watch as the moon gradually blanketed out the sun’s rays until it was a perfect glimmering ring.

“To hear the kids cheering was music to my ears,” said James Blake, the Science Curriculum Specialist at LPS - and the man who coordinated the entire district-wide effort. “In a way this is almost exactly what I expected, we planned this so well, I’ve lived this over and over in my mind - even in my dreams.”

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon falls exactly between the earth and the sun, essentially blocking out the sun for a period of time. This is the first time Lincoln has experienced a total eclipse in 500 years – and schools across the community experienced varying time periods of totality: Norwood Park Elementary School with the shortest totality at 31 seconds, and Lincoln Southwest High School with the most at 1 minute, 49 seconds.

“I’ve never been a shy person, so it wasn’t scary for me. I met so many cool people and I’m still in contact with everyone I met there,” Diane says.

In her TED talk, Diane shares how she used art as a way to heal after the tragic loss of her father when she was only five years old.

Diane, a talented artist, not only draws for herself; she enjoys giving back and sharing her gift with others. “It’s really nice to put what I like to do, and what I’m good at to use and make someone else’s day.

I guess that’s what motivates me.”

“Our very first meeting, she had a project,” recalls LeeAnne. “Do you remember?” LeeAnne asks Diane. “We made bookmarks and I still have my bookmark.”

Diane and LeeAnne continue to work on creative art projects together. Some of their favorite projects include birthday gifts for friends, individual Valentines they handed out to kids at the People’s City Mission, magnets for residents at a retirement home and art pieces for patients with cancer.

“We keep the office staff entertained,” LeeAnne admits. Whether it’s wood burning coasters or a DIY costume, the staff at Lincoln Southwest High School, where Diane is currently a junior, love to see what Diane and LeeAnne are working on each week.

Diane’s art isn’t just a hobby, she plans on turning her passion into a career. “I want to direct Pixar movies.”

Creating a Future with Art “She did an amazing TED Talk!” LeeAnne Call proudly shares about her mentee, Diane.

“She introduced that to me,” Diane adds appreciatively.

LeeAnne’s daughter curated the first TEDx Youth event in Lincoln, so LeeAnne told Diane about the event and encouraged her to apply.

Diane made it through several rounds of auditions, and as a sixth grader, became the youngest presenter at the TEDx Youth event in Lincoln.

With LeeAnne’s help, Diane was able to connect via email with Darrell Rooney, a director and animator who worked on films including, Lion King II and Mulan II. Darrell connected Diane to more animators, producers and directors who critique her artwork, encourage and mentor her. “I’ve been able to meet so many amazing people through LeeAnne. The art field is not easy to succeed in, so their support is awesome,” Diane says.

Diane and LeeAnne agree that TeamMates allows them to stretch their imagination and try new things. “It’s important to step out of your comfort zone. If I hadn’t, then a lot of the things we’ve done together probably would’ve never happened,” Diane says.

“I try to encourage her to follow her dreams and not let anybody stand in her way,” shares LeeAnne.

After graduation, Diane plans on attending Cal Arts in Santa Clara, CA. In the meantime, Diane and LeeAnne will continue to share their creativity and love for art every week as TeamMates.

Trips, guests and projects highlight TCA business classes

A field trip offered the chance to tour the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, MO.

Nicole Barrett of The Career Academy was one of nine teachers from five high schools and programs in Lincoln Public Schools honored for their efforts in teaching business classes to students.

Here are her responses to questions about what concepts students learn, how they learn and how the curriculum is changing for the better for students.

Why do you feel business is a good high school topics for students?

Business applies to everything a student will do in their life regardless of their career choice. First and foremost, business skills help them manage their own finances; enhance their computer skills by learning Microsoft Office; maintain professionalism during a job search and throughout their careers; and understand basic economic principles that effect society (i.e. taxes, banking, etc.). Every industry has business related jobs and the skill set business students learn prepares them to work wherever their career path takes them.

What types of projects do the students complete, and what do you see from them that assures they are growing their understanding?

In the TCA Business Administration pathway, my students engage in a variety of projects that help them learn the content in a hands-on, engaged environment. Some of the big ones are: 1. The juniors, who were studying Principles of Marketing and Intro to Business, participated in the JA Company Program. You can follow the link to learn more about the program, but in a nutshell they formed their own company and ran it from start to finish.

This required them to raise capital, decide on a product, run the sales and business, produce advertisements, and liquidate the business in one semester. They ended with about a 300% ROI. This project was embedded within the Intro to Business and Principles of Marketing courses. Their adaptation to company challenges and overall successful business implementation assures me that they are growing their understanding of business and applying the concepts learned in the curriculum.

2. In Business Law (seniors), the students competed against each other in a Mock Trial that was held in the Courtroom at UNL Law College. The students used this activity to help them understand the basics of a trial process and about torts. It was a great experience that the students loved, but it also provided tremendous educational value:

a. Engaged students by giving they a case problem to solve b. Fostered team work by dividing the class into Plaintiff and Defendant teams c. Utilized critical thinking skills in a multi-week hands on environment d. Served as a class capstone by culminating concepts from throughout the term

3. In Principles of Banking (seniors), we took a field trip to Kansas City to tour the Federal Reserve Bank followed by an economic outlook presentation by Federal Reserve research associate Amy Okso. The tour followed a lunch at the Federal Reserve with Guest Speaker Kevin Shields from the FDIC. We started our day with a tour of Hallmark, with a presentation by a Financial Risk Manager, and ended it with a tour of SDC Publications, an entrepreneurial small textbook business that prepared a robust hands-on learning presentation incorporating general business concepts as well as their Banking and Business Law courses.

Students are incorporated components of the trip into their final research papers and presentations for the course.

4. In Principles of Management, the students paired up with the Engineering Pathway for a semester long project. The engineers were building robots (in teams) for their final capstone and my students were assigned as the managers for the robot companies.

They had to meet with the engineers weekly, monitor the budget, approve change orders and purchase requests, deal with HR issues, and eventually help the engineers with pricing and promotion for the robots. During the last week of the term, the teams worked together to make Shark Tank like pitches to instructors and administration. The instructors and administers, instead of investing capital in the company, had the opportunity to issue a purchase order for the robots for the companies they represented. For example, one company designed a robot to deliver drinks in a movie theater and the “sharks� fictitiously represented Marcus theaters, the Joyo, the Mary Reipma Ross theater, and a company that installs home theaters. To assist the BSAD students early on, I brought in a guest speaker specifically to address management of professionals in industries where you are not a subject matter expert. Our Youth Theatre is a year-round program of The Haymarket Theatre open to all young people ages 6-18. We take pride in doing great full-length plays including musicals like Annie, Oklahoma, Monty Python’s Spamalot and School House Rock, plays like Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Flies, Mister Popper’s Penguins, hilarious original productions like Morton of Rumptonshire and Cowboys! the Musical, and classical works such as the plays of Shakespeare and Moliere. We also do some classes, day camps, special camps such as during spring break, and after school programs. All if it is GREAT fun. If at all possible we do the complete, full-length versions of all plays and musicals. There are no prerequisite classes to take.

In Career Transitions and Management Strategies, they role played for four weeks as managers for Wegmans food stores and went through a hiring process for a new cashier. The students had to write the job description, develop a help wanted ad, screen applications to select interviewees, conduct mock interviews, and eventually offer a job to one candidate while writing rejection letters to the others. The students learned so much and loved the experience. It built nicely on their own mock interviews done earlier in the term.

What trends have you seen in recent years in the curriculum for business?

A couple trends that I have noticed are focusing on different generations in the workforce with the additions and nuances of millennials and generation Z. The business world is changing with these generations and it effects management styles, office culture, business etiquette, communication, entrepreneurial spirit, etc. The curriculum and teaching style continues to adjust to these changes.

Five pieces in five days Lux Middle School is hosted a Summer String Camp for middle school orchestra students. The students had the opportunity to learn five different pieces of music throughout the five-day camp.

Director Del Whitman explains, “The purpose of the camp is to give middle schoolers a week during the middle of the summer to unpack their instruments and play so that they don’t forget too much and they don’t get too rusty.”

What hopes do you still have for your students as you continue to add and refine your own lesson plans?

My hopes are that my students continue to find their passions, feel engaged and challenged through the handson activities at TCA, and develop strong college and career readiness skills. I continue to refine my lesson plans as I get feedback from students on what works and what can be improved.

Begin the school year by getting active at streets alive!

By Michelle Welch, LPS Wellness and Ashley Carson, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln This time of year, we celebrate beginnings – a new school year, new teachers, new friends, new classes and a fun chance to be more physically active.

On Sunday, September 10, from 1-5 p.m., the Streets Alive! outdoor movement festival lets families walk, skate, run, stroll, bike, or even dance their way along the path. The festival is lined with free health resources, join-in fitness activities, sing and dance along entertainment, kids activities as well as a low cost farmer’s market and local food truck opportunities.

Streets Alive! encourages family members of every age to celebrate being active together because the festival is family, wheelchair and pet friendly. Visitors may enter or exit anywhere along the two mile traffic-free route. Families are invited to document their Streets Alive! memories at a free photo booth on the path.

Streets Alive is a city-wide and city-sponsored event hosted this year by the Belmont neighborhood. The route features parks, playgrounds, walking trails, a neighborhood pool and a disc golf course. Belmont is home to or near three Lincoln Public Schools, Belmont Elementary, Campbell Elementary, and Goodrich Middle School. Belmont Elementary serves as the “hub” or center of the festival route.

Kids can be active with oversized bubble soccer, archery, tag and the bounce house obstacle course. Families can join the fun with yoga, kickboxing and fitness boot camp sample experiences.

And while Streets Alive! is a one-day annual event, it will leave a lasting impact on the Belmont neighborhood--a community project which encourages outdoor living and activity. A shelter will be built in Belmont Park that will double as an outdoor classroom for students through community partner fundraising efforts.

Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, who organizes Streets Alive!, is collaborating with Lincoln Parks and Recreation, the Belmont Neighborhood Association, community organizations and Lincoln businesses to raise funds for the outdoor classroom/shelter. Educators key to ‘community care’ of children Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime, not only around the world but in Nebraska as well - and educators can be key in recognizing and reporting signs and symptoms. That’s why trafficking experts were invited to speak as the keynote at the annual Lincoln Public Schools Leadership Conference, a beginning-ofschool gathering for all the school district’s administrators held at Lincoln Northeast High School.

• Students who act fearful, timid or submissive.

• They may have a close relationship with a significantly older unrelated adult, or have claims of an older boyfriend or girlfriend, • They have unexplained school absences, truancy, or missing from care and other delinquent behavior.

Jessica Thompson’s Southeast students who competed at the State DECA competition

Real-life experiences part of learning opportunities for business students Jessica Thompson of Lincoln Southeast High School was one of 9 teachers from 5 high schools and programs in Lincoln Public Schools honored for their efforts in teaching business classes to students.

Here are her responses to questions about what concepts students learn, how they learn and how the curriculum is changing for the better for students.

Why do you feel business is a good high school topics for students?

I feel that business is a good topic to be covered in the high schools because the information that students learn will have real life benefits. The business community has impacted so many areas that students can enter in after high school that they see the benefits of our courses very quickly.

What types of projects do the students complete, and what do you see from them that assures they are growing their understanding?

Business students will complete a variety of projects. Some key projects that students grow the most in are creating their own business plan, creating a hospitality plan for a large group of customers, creating a travel timetable for customers and completing the accounting cycle for an entire year’s worth of transactions.

What trends have you seen in recent years in the curriculum for business?

Business curriculum is unique in the way that the curriculum is always evolving. As business teachers we need to adapt to current business trends so that our students are the most prepared going into the business world. Students have gained from the trend of getting MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certified. By having these certifications students are able to go to the business world with documentation that they are qualified.

What hopes do you still have for your students as you continue to add and refine your own lesson plans?

I hope that we will be able to still offer the MOS certifications. I hope to continue to evolve my lesson plans so that students are getting the real-life experience that they deserve, I can accomplish this by continuing my education, bringing in community speakers and having conversations with the students.

Rising to the top in national competition Lincoln Public Schools Career Academy, K-12 and Early Childhood education students saw success at national competition over the summer. Competing against approximately 1,000 students from across the nation in 21 competitions geared towards future educators, The Career Academy (TCA) had 11 students break the top 10.

Students who placed in the top 10 at the Educator’s Rising Competition: • Ally Fricke and Emma Miller in Research Learning Challenges • Emily Cole, Ryleigh Gebers, Riana Prudente and Caila Gans in Ethical Dilemma • Taylor Powers in Exploring Support Services (Top three) • Ryleigh Gebers in Impromptu Speaking (Top three) • Maria Kamar and Marga Galins in Children’s Literature K-3 • Emma Davis in Children’s Literature Higher Ed (Top three) In addition to the competition, students also were able to network with other future teachers from across the nation. They attended breakout sessions, a Diamondbacks baseball game, toured Arizona State University, and explored the downtown area of Phoenix.
