ASSOCIATION NEWS Board of Directors’ Report David Mateer, President As we start the new year, it is natural to wonder if anything has changed lately. The answer is absolutely yes. However, many of the changes may not be readily apparent to community members. Several initiatives were undertaken in the second half of 2025 to improve the Association’s tools and operations. The board, committees, management, and staff have been working diligently to be ready for new systems and enhanced operations for 2026.

Starting this month, we will have reporting on all projects in flight from the initial request through completion. This will enable more effective overall management of the projects. It will also assist with project prioritization, approvals, and monitoring their status. Our Project Manager joined Operations recently and will oversee and enhance our performance in completing projects across all aspects.

These projects mainly focus on updates to our

existing facilities but will also include new items for the community. Staff will also have additional tools for managing projects and ongoing maintenance.

To assist homeowners, our Community Standards Department has changed to a new system to support its operations. This will be used to support owners’ requests for changes and to let owners know when something needs additional attention.

Changes are also continuing for the Orchard Creek Lodge. For 2026, we will continue that refresh into the lobby area and the craft wing of the lodge.

Overall planning for the next phase is underway with approval targeted for February. Then the refresh for the lobby, living room, and hallway will proceed.

They will match the theme established with the ballroom refresh with several accents and details unique to these areas.

A Note from the Executive Director Jessica Sedgwick, Executive Director As we begin 2026, Lincoln Hills is moving forward with a wide range of projects and improvements designed to care for our facilities, enhance amenities, and strengthen how we manage work across the community.

One important update this year is the addition of a full-time Project Manager. This role was created to provide consistent oversight of capital and large-scale projects, improve coordination across departments, and support projects from early planning through completion. While some initiatives were already underway before the position was filled, all new capital projects will now begin through the Project Management Office.

Across Orchard Creek, Kilaga Springs, and community facilities, many projects are currently under evaluation and review. These include exterior lodge painting at both Orchard Creek and Kilaga Springs Lodge, interior painting at Orchard Creek Lodge, amphitheater pump replacement, Sports Plaza restroom improvements, and several shade and lighting projects. Projects currently in development include Kilaga Springs pool shades and lighting, and the pickleball shade structure, which has been presented

to the Properties Committee and is anticipated for Finance Committee review in January.

To help ensure thoughtful decision-making, projects follow a defined review process. Requests are evaluated by staff, reviewed for scope, cost, and community impact, and then considered by the Properties and Finance Committees and Board in open meetings. Not every project moves forward, and many are refined or adjusted during this process.

Technology and accessibility improvements are also being evaluated, including access control upgrades, expanded Wi-Fi access points, hand-wave openers for accessibility push buttons, generator planning with PG&E support, restaurant chair replacement, storage improvements, and dehumidifier upgrades.

January also marks the launch of our new accounting system, CINC, along with a new online payment portal. Registration details were included with January statements, and the new system is designed to improve reliability, security, and access to account information.

Together, these updates reflect a continued focus on planning, transparency, and responsible investment in the community we all call home.

ASSOCIATION NEWS Architectural Review Committee Can We Please Get a Little Sunshine?

Donna Baker Martin, Ed.D., Chair As I sit here looking out at the dreary landscape in the distance, I long for a little sunshine. For the last four weeks, we have not seen the sun. I don’t know about you, but I get a little stir-crazy with all the gloomy weather.

With time on your hands, now is the perfect time to dream and plan for the spring.

Tired of looking at your boring backyard? There is a form for that, depending on the extent of your project. Adding turf (Checklist 4), a water feature (Checklist 15), or a courtyard wall (Checklist 30) might be your dream. What about getting new lights to replace the original ones, which are now 25 years old? There is a form for that (Checklist 21).

Anytime you want to change anything on the outside of your home, you are required to complete a form (31 options). That sounds like a

lot of work, and believe me, it is, but there is a reason. The Architectural Review Committee (ACR) strives to maintain the neighborhood for everyone’s enjoyment.

We have all driven through nice neighborhoods only to see an eyesore property right in the middle.

Without a homeowner’s association, neighbors have no recourse. When Lincoln Hills broke ground 25 years ago, it was meant to be a property that would last. Here we are, and looking around, it looks pretty good. This is why we have architectural standards in the first place.

The ARC has been reviewing design guidelines for more than a year, and they are now ready for your input. Please review the information we sent out and let us know what you think. We are here to listen.

Compliance Committee New Ideas in 2026 Sherry Mosby, Chair New ideas and technologies seem to be developing much more quickly in the last few years. I asked AI what is new for keeping your property in tip-top shape in 2026.

This is what I learned.

Keeping your yard and the exterior of your home looking great is becoming easier thanks to a wave of smart, efficient innovations. Homeowners no longer need to spend every weekend working outside to achieve professional-looking results. One of the biggest advances is robotic lawn mowers.

These quiet, battery-powered machines automatically mow on a schedule, adjust to grass growth, and return to their charging stations on their own.

Many models use GPS mapping and sensors to avoid obstacles and maintain consistent cutting patterns. Smart irrigation systems are also transforming yard care. Using local weather data, soil moisture sensors, and mobile apps, these systems deliver water only when and where it’s needed. This 6

not only keeps lawns and plants healthier but also reduces water waste and lowers utility bills. Batterypowered yard tools are another major innovation.

Modern electric trimmers, blowers, and hedge clippers are lighter, quieter, and more powerful than ever, with interchangeable batteries that work across multiple tools.

For the exterior of the house, low-maintenance materials and coatings are making a difference.

Self-cleaning exterior paints use advanced polymers that repel dirt and resist fading. Finally, outdoor monitoring technology, such as solar-powered security cameras and smart lighting, helps keep the property safe and attractive. Together, these innovations make it easier than ever to maintain a beautiful yard and home exterior with less effort and more confidence, allowing you more free time.

ASSOCIATION NEWS Clubs and Community Organizations Committee New Ideas Bring New Opportunities George Herrmann, Chair While the start of a new year usually has us looking ahead, it is also a good time to look back at what was new in 2025 and will carry us into 2026.

Lincoln Hills is known for having a club, community organization, or support group for nearly everyone. In 2025, that tradition continued with the creation of four new clubs. The Lawn Activities Club, featuring croquet, badminton, and cornhole, plays on the grass behind the bocce courts. The Tesla Club, reflecting growing interest in electric vehicles, was formed with all residents’ welcome.

A change in the Club Policies Manual allowed two long-standing groups, the Shalom Social Club and the Republican Club, to become formally recognized by the Association.

Behind the scenes, the Clubs and Community Organizations Committee (CCOC) made meaningful progress in 2025 by developing clearer documents and procedures. These changes make it easier to form new clubs, simplify existing bylaws, and

navigate an updated Club Policies Handbook. A formal process was also established for clubs that become inactive or “age out.”

Another important change resulted from a request by the Food Adventurers Club. Clubs may now use the Kilaga Springs Lodge kitchen facilities for cooking activities. This opportunity requires advance paperwork, adherence to established rules, and proper cleanup, but it opens the door to new and creative activities.

In 2025, the CCOC also began reaching out to every club, community organization, and support group at least once a year. These small, focused meetings, grouped by similar interests or shared facilities, supplement the annual all-clubs meeting and strengthen communication. This will continue in 2026.

That’s what was new in 2025. We look forward to seeing what will be new in 2026. Bring us your ideas, your energy, and your enthusiasm. Let’s make 2026 a great year.

Properties Committee New Canvas Peggy Scott, Committee Member The new year is more than a date on the page; it’s a chance to reflect on what we’ve built together and imagine what lies ahead. From the laughter of summer concerts and parties to the quiet beauty of autumn evenings, our community has thrived because of the connections we share.

This January, let’s carry that spirit forward.

Whether it’s joining a committee, planting a new tree, or simply greeting a neighbor with a smile, every small act strengthens the fabric of our community. The new year invites us to set intentions not just for ourselves, but for the place we all call home.

As we welcome a new year, our community has the opportunity to reflect on what makes it special and set goals to strengthen it even further. The past year brought moments of connection, growth, and resilience, and now we look ahead with optimism and purpose.

We also plan to strengthen communication and transparency. Clear updates, accessible resources, and open forums will ensure that every homeowner feels informed and included in decision-making.

Our community thrives when everyone’s voice is heard.

We will continue monthly inspections of our facilities and assets to ensure they are in top-notch shape, safe, and functional.

The new year is a fresh canvas, and each of us has a role in painting it with care, cooperation, and creativity. By working toward these shared goals, we will continue to build a community that is welcoming, resilient, and full of pride.

New beginnings remind us that every resident plays a part in shaping our community. Together, we can create a community that’s not only well-managed but also welcoming, vibrant, and future ready.

ASSOCIATION NEWS Finance Committee November Revenue Fred Raach, Chair Association net revenue increased in November, but the increase was $25,000 less than planned in the Budget.

For the year-to-date, the net revenue at the end of the month was $28,000, which was $210,000 better than budgeted.

Total gross operating revenue at the end of November was $108,000 less than budgeted.

Lifestyle’s gross revenue was $310,000 less than budgeted, primarily caused by the decision to eliminate trips this year. Gross revenue of the Spa at Kilaga Springs was $55,000 less than budgeted, because of staffing challenges. The other four revenue-producing departments’ (Administration, Communication and IT, WellFit, and Food and Beverage) operating gross revenue was ahead of Budget by a total of $257,000.

At the end of November, total expenses were $318,000 less than budgeted, an improvement of $19,000 from October. Over-budget expenses in the Administration, Food and Beverage, and Facilities and Landscaping Departments were more than offset by savings in the other four departments. The sources of the savings were less than the budgeted cost of sales, personnel, and utilities expenses.

The chart below shows the contribution of each department to the $210,000 better-than-budgeted net revenue for this year.

All of the departments that are better than

Budget, shown by the green bars, increased their positive margin in November. In fact, each had better net revenue, i.e., required less subsidy from dues, than they had in November 2024. The Administration Department’s negative margin increased in November by $5,000 as a result of higher than budgeted cost for the security patrol service. The Food and Beverage Department negative margin to Budget increased by $12,000 with higher food and personnel costs moderated by increased Catering revenue in November. The Facilities and Landscape Department negative margin increased by $40,000 in November from higher than budgeted expenses for landscape maintenance, other maintenance, supplies, and repairs with some offset from lower than budgeted personnel expense.

The balance of the reserve fund grew by $64,000 in November, the net of $212,000 of contributions and interest added, less $148,000 of expenditures.

Total expenditures for the year were $2,812,000, appreciably higher than prior years but less than the $3,855,000 projected by the reserve study.

There were no capital expenditures in November.

The balance in the Community Enhancement Fund grew to $360,000, with $53,000 allocated to approved and in process projects.

The detailed financial reports will be posted on the Resident Website once accepted by the Board.

ASSOCIATION NEWS Lifestyle News and Happenings What’s New Kelly Berto, Director of Lifestyle As we step into 2026, we are excited to share what’s ahead and how we are expanding opportunities for connection, entertainment, and community engagement.

We are thrilled to welcome Trips back, a favorite among our community. These well-loved outings return by popular demand, creating opportunities to explore and enjoy memorable experiences close to home.

Our commitment to exceptional live entertainment remains strong. At our Summer Amphitheater Concert Series we continue to secure high-quality performers who deliver unforgettable experiences.

We have already begun building the 2026 lineup and are excited to confirm several high-end acts.

Programming will again reflect a diverse mix of genres, including country, pop, and rock and roll.

We will also be launching a new event series, “Spotlight Conversations,” featuring notable figures

from pop culture making special appearances.

These intimate experiences will offer unique access, meaningful dialogue, and behind-the-scenes storytelling opportunities.

In 2026, we will be expanding our Community Perks. Beginning in January, members can enjoy weekly movie screenings, new workshops, and intergenerational events designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and meaningful connections across generations.

Community engagement remains at the heart of our mission. From February 1 to 28, we are partnering with the Lincoln Hills Foundation and The Salt Mine on Show Your Love, a donation drive collecting essential items to support individuals experiencing homelessness in Placer County.

Finally, watch for new seasonal events, including Lunar New Year celebrations, a Fourth of July Block Party, and Fall Movies under the Stars. We look forward to sharing an inspiring and impactful year!

ASSOCIATION NEWS Living the Vision Communicating Better in 2026 Tim Rusher, Communications and IT Manager At the November Communications and Community Relations Committee Meeting, Jeff Caponera, Director of Operations, and I shared some details of our Communications Plan that was developed after the adoption of the 2025 Strategic Plan. These initiatives are intended to strengthen two-way communication within the community by increasing the quality and quantity of information we provide and encouraging more feedback from residents. A few of these initiatives are outlined below.

Celebrating Wins — We want to make a point to celebrate the positive things happening in our community. From publicizing the completion of major projects to acknowledging the hard work of Association staff and volunteers, we want the community to know about the accomplishments that keep Lincoln Hills great.

Educating New Residents — We are working on a new eNews series meant specifically for new

residents that will help explain how the Association functions and share all that Lincoln Hills has to offer. If you have suggestions for topics you wish you had known when you moved in, feel free to email them to me at Tim.Rusher@sclhca.com.

Experience-Based Feedback — We are developing processes to invite residents to provide feedback specifically tied to recent experiences. We want to make it easier for you to share dining experiences at Meridians, WellFit classes, Lifestyle events, and more. The more feedback we receive, the easier it is to adjust operations to better serve the community.

These are only a few of the many initiatives we will be pursuing in 2026 and beyond. Our entire Communications Plan centers on doing our part to fulfill the Association’s mission to “provide outstanding places, spaces, programs, and services” and its vision to “foster exceptional places and experiences that make life better.”

One of the most exciting developments is the rise of technology-driven fitness. Wearable devices, smart watches, and biometric trackers now offer real-time insights into heart rate, recovery, sleep quality, and daily activity, empowering users to make informed decisions and build healthier routines. This trend is expected to remain at the top of the industry as devices become even more integrated with training programs and wellness coaching.

Equally important is the growing focus on mental well-being and restorative movement. New Club Plugs Big-Brained Cars David Wright, Roving Reporter

“It’s alive! It’s alive!”

“It’s like driving a computer on wheels.” Paul Gardner describes his new 2026 Tesla with an enthusiasm shared by fellow Tesla owners, Ken Spencer and Wayne Ford. Having a like-minded affinity for artificial intelligence, the three Lincoln Hills residents brainstormed the idea of starting a club to help new Tesla owners connect with their “George Jetson mobiles.”

The trio spread the concept of a Tesla Club via word of mouth and generated a battery of interest. The inaugural meeting drew 54 new members for a questionand-answer session with a Tesla representative. All residents with an interest in electric vehicles are welcome to join.

Last month, club members aligned with Diana Peters and the Boomers Group to organize a holiday poker run. Adding to the fun, several Tesla drivers synchronized their vehicles to display a festive light show in the Kilaga Springs Lodge parking lot.

The newly sanctioned, no-dues club is moving forward with planning guest speakers, road trips, and social events. However, the top priorities are to elect a steering committee, reserve a regular

meeting room large enough to accommodate a growing membership, and form a volunteer corps of mentors to help new Tesla owners navigate the learning curve of using their vehicles’ hi-tech features.

Driving these all-electric transporters, you would think you have landed in a sci-fi movie. Every function is AI-capable, controlled by apps, touchscreen, or voice activation. With supervised self-driving, “it’s like having an Uber in my garage,” Paul explains. “It opens the roll-up door, backs out, and takes me where I want to go.”

Cameras are located throughout the vehicle, including one that monitors the driver’s attention and issues a “wake-up call” when necessary. It even parks itself.

Some models are equipped with “Smart Summon,” which calls the car from its parking space and sends it over to pick you up.

Tapping “dog mode,” you are not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Even in the hot summer months, you can leave Toto in the car while you run errands. The Tesla will keep the car at a perfect 71 degrees and let you remotely see and speak to your pooch through the phone app.

The Tesla may not be gas-powered, but it is a gas to drive. As interest grows, more residents may soon join in the buzz. Meanwhile, the new Lincoln Hills Tesla Club is charged up and ready to cruise into the new year.

It is challenging to write an article about what is new in health care for a diverse population of older adults with varying health statuses. This year, each of us is the oldest we have ever been, and what is old for some is new for others. Only a few topics can be mentioned in this article.

AI is the topic of the times.

First, let us be clear about what AI is. When this writer, who has connections in the cattle ranching industry, first heard the term AI,

it was taken to refer to artificial insemination, a common cattle breeding technique.

AI in common public discussion now refers to artificial intelligence, which, by definition, “uses technology to enable computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity, and autonomy.” AI certification courses to learn the complexities of the process are bei ng offered at universities across the country.

Medical practices struggle with the strengths and limitations of AI as they use it to improve efficiency and accuracy in documentation and patient outcomes.

Moving forward, AI will be used i n health care i n many ways, including detecting diseases at earlier stages, accelerating drug discovery, and mapping a

patient’s anatomy before a surgical procedure to predict the best tools for the surgery.

Stem cell therapy is new to many. Used in the field of regenerative medicine, stem cell treatment uses the power of your own body cells to help you heal from chronic inflammation and other conditions, such as joint pain from osteoarthritis, chronic tendonitis, bone fractures, and degenerative vertebral discs.

Recent studies have shown significant improvements in funct ion and overall health with stem cell therapy in patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Fibromyalgia, COPD, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and many other conditions.

Coffee consumption is old.

New research shows coffee to be closely linked to living longer, according to Julia Zampano, RD, of the Cleveland Clinic Department of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee show potential for health benefits and may lower the risk of premature death. Coffee’s benefits are due mainly to biochemical compounds called cafestol and kahweol found in coffee beans. You have to drink four to seven measuring cups a day to get maximum benefit. Those with medical conditions affected by caffeine are advised to discuss coffee use with their doctor. Enjoy your cup of Joe.

The Writers Group is ready to read

As a homage to Sesame Street, the following is brought to you by the letters A and I. AI (Artificial Intelligence) can simply be defined as a computer doing a human’s work, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, or decision making.

Although helpful, it’s complicated, with such limitations as a lack of transparency, job displacement, and ethical and privacy concerns.

Nowhere does AI generate concerns more than in the area of writing, where authenticity is

key. This becomes troublesome for professors who are watchful of students’ compositions or Hollywood screenwriters wary of AI stealing jobs.

There is a group of creative writers who are less bothered

by AI and more interested in another interpretation – Authentic Inspiration. Their material is genuine and proudly hand-crafted. One of Lincoln Hills’ longestrunning clubs, the Writers Club represents a diverse group of residents who share a love of writing and telling stories using prose or poetry. The group meets twice a month to read their works aloud.

During each meeting, where attendance may reach 14 to 16 writers, time matters, so each narration is limited to 1,300 words. Following the readings, brief verbal critiques are given by the audience, as well as some handwritten feedback for the author.

Although a few members admit to utilizing AI for proofreading or research, their original subject matter derives from life experiences and memoirs, some carefully re-polished for a fresh presentation to group mates. Recent topics have included: travelogues, historical fiction, poetry – rhyming and free verse, and humorous jabs at (guess what?) – AI! Current club president Neil Co c h ra n v iews t he g r oup’s purpose as a way for writers to enjoy a “convivial atmosphere and explore topics,” while sharpening their writing skills. “We are friends,” he adds. “Members faithfully attend the sessions because they like to write and they like each other.”

Not in the market for a Pulitzer Prize or National Book Award, many members nonetheless have self-published their works. Retired Air Force pilot John Ross has published several novels. “There’s a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with self-publishing a book,” he said. John continues to captivate the audience with his historical fiction tales of the Civil War. As these pen pals eloquently embark on another year of creativity and pure enjoyment in a world of AI, Writers Club members will continue to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and for better or verse, write on!

Neighborhood Watch Sets Sights on Safety for 2026 Judie Panneton, Neighborhood Watch Neighborhood Watch begins the new year by keeping neighbors safe through presentations, informational sessions, gatherings, and more. On January 20, an Aging Safely presentation will occur in P-Hall (KS) at Noon. Come learn from experts with Placer County PROTECT. In November, the Lincoln Police Department provided two officers and a staff person to share information about scams. Sergeant Jesse McCauley noted that 74.2% of the most common scams target people who are 65 and older. In Lincoln, 46.7 % of all victims live in Lincoln Hills. You can view the video at sclhwatch.org. In Memoriam G. Allan Kingston Allan was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from UC Berkeley. He served in the Navy as an officer, serving aboard the USS MIDWAY. He built a career in the housing industry and was named President and CEO of the first-ever privatized government program in California. The State-run Century Freeway Housing Program became the private non-profit Century Housing, devoted to financing affordable housing. He advocated for veterans, workforce housing, and the unhoused. Allan and his wife, Patti, moved here in 2014 after raising their four children in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Veterans Group, and as an avid sports fan, Allan looked forward to the fall season and college football.

Gesa Payne Born in Berlin, Germany, Gesa escaped from East Germany with her family after the War. Later, she attended the University of Heidelberg. In 1963, she moved to Hayward, California, with her new baby and husband. She built a highly successful tax consulting business and served as an active leader in Soroptimist International. Gesa enjoyed many activities, such as table tennis, live entertainment, and “Happy Hour.” She was serious about Bridge and about having fun with family and friends. She leaves her three daughters and their families.

Library News Happy New Year, Lincoln Hills Residents! I wanted to start the New Year with a few fun facts about Kilaga Springs and Orchard Creek Library.

We are a totally volunteer staff, and all of our books are donations.

Books are “checked out” on the honor system: take the book(s) you want, read them, and return them when you are finished.

We currently have 35 volunteers who work seven days a week. On average, volunteers spend three hours a day in the library and reading room.

In the Kilaga Springs library, we have approximately 3200 books – fiction and non-fiction, large print, and books on CD. We also sponsor the Meet the Author Lecture Series, held on the first Monday of each month in P-Hall (KS). We try to highlight Lincoln Hills residents and local authors who have written books of interest to our residents.

John was commissioned in the Civil Engineer Corps, Naval Reserve in 1961 and served three years active duty in Yokosuka, Japan. Upon release from active duty in 1964, he became active in the Naval Reserve program, where he held a succession of leadership and command positions over the next 27 years. The Seabees are a permanent part of the Navy’s fighting forces, building and fighting in every military conflict since their inception in 1942.

We will resume our usual meeting place in February on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 PM in the Fine Arts Room. The Men’s Group will now meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10:00 AM in the Multipurpose Room. Wellness Pass, Group Ex Pass, and Fast Pass classes are drop-in, group exercise classes on a first-come, first-served basis in our Aerobics Rooms (KS/OC) as well as the Sports Plaza and OC pools. You may arrive and sign up one hour before the start time of the class. Good for one session each. *Group Ex Passes are $5.50 for 55 minutes. *Wellness Passes are $15 for 60 minutes. *Fast Pass Classes are $3.50 and can only be used in our 30-minute classes.

Group Ex Passes and Fast Passes are not interchangeable. Purchase these passes through the Resident Website or at the fitness center front desks. Membership packages require an agreement for autopay upon enrollment. Class schedules can be found on the Resident Website or at the fitness centers. Online class scheduling is from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily. The new month’s scheduling always opens on the 15 of the month at 7:00 AM for four and eight class membership packages. Members with no package (no auto bill pay) will be able to book single sessions starting on the 22 of the month at 7:00 AM for the next month’s classes.

WELLFIT CLASSES Tennis - Live Ball (all levels) Sunday, February 8 10:00 to 11:30 AM Courts 1 and 2 Free, Drop-In Live Ball is the tennis workout that aims to check all the boxes: action, camaraderie, fitness, and, most of all, fun! Live Ball is a doubles-style game in which rotating pairs compete to gain and maintain control of a “champion” side (kind of a “king of the hill” thing). The challenging team must win two points before the champion team wins one in order to move to the champion side.
