Our “Know Your Neighbor” featured merchant this month is the “Bundt King” himself…Nothing Bundt Cakes owner Mike Robinson. Mike is known for providing a friendly face and amazing customer service. If you have not tried one of the many delicious cake flavors — the holidays are a perfect time to treat yourself! Lincoln Center takes pride in finding innovative businesses and shops to offer our valued patrons. Look for Limitless Escape Games, coming very soon, in the former Draper’s & Damon’s space next to Fleet Feet Sports. Read more on page 6 about this fun-filled escape adventure that is perfect for team building, families or just a fun time out with friends — the first of its kind here in Stockton! Cornerstone Real Estate Services, owned by Randy and Kathleen Thomas, will be occupying our new office building located near Silveria’s Flowers & Gifts in January 2018. Look for more exciting news as we head into the new year. November and December are busy months, but the gratefulness that ensues as we gather our family and friends close to us these next few months reminds us that there are many less fortunate in our community. Lincoln Center and our 90 plus merchants are very blessed and thankful to give back too many worthwhile charitable organizations every year. In addition to those charities, we have decided to help with a problem facing many communities, but especially in San Joaquin County — homelessness. We have joined with the Stockton based 75-year-old Gospel Center Rescue Mission to help fight a problem that affects us all. Please read more on page 24 about this amazing organization, how we are partnering with them and how you can get involved. As the festivities of the season begin, I invite you to come out and make Lincoln Center your home for the holidays. Visit LincolnCenterShops.com for our special holiday schedule and more. Happy Thanksgiving,

From décor to food, everything you need for the perfect fall affair can be found here in Lincoln Center. Embellished with accessories from CR Porter, Le Creuset from Best Wishes, and a floral centerpiece from Silveria’s, the table is a haven for the Center’s best products. NEW FROM THE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide By: Julie Van Noate

S Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

o they say it's a small world.... Almost two years ago our favorite candy maker decided not to make the product that we all loved so much. In an effort to replace what our customers expected, I traveled to food shows and gift shows with less than exciting results. My daughter, Holland, was with me on several of those occasions and knew what we were looking for.

One day, Holland called from Boise, Idaho (where she lives) and with her mouth full said, "I found it Mom! The candy you are looking for... it's made here in Idaho!" She bought a bar (or two) to be able to get the information as to where we could find the candy extraordinaire.

Holland and Julie Van Noate with Cyndi Arno and her husband Rob

I made a call to Arno Chocolate and left a message on the answering machine. I introduced myself and explained what Best Wishes was all about and asked if someone could call me back... and she did. A woman called and said "Hi Julie, this is Cyndi Arno from Arno Chocolate and I am originally from STOCKTON!" Cyndi Brown Arno was raised in Stockton and went to Franklin High School. She worked at Union Safe Deposit Bank for many years but left to start her bow making business. Her bows were actually sold here in Lincoln Center at Campbell's! She moved to Idaho in 1996 and started making Peppermint Bark as Christmas gifts for friends and in 2008 began her business! We now proudly carry what we think is the best, most unique chocolate we have ever come across. Peppermint Bark may be the #1 seller but come taste all the others! There are flavors you may expect like Coffee (made with whole beans), Orange with Sea Salt and Caramel Crunch with Sea Salt but prepare to tingle your taste buds with others such as Wasabi (yes! with wasabi covered peas), Pumpkin Pecan Pie or maybe Hot Potato Jalapeno (made with potato chips and jalapenos!). So we call it "locally made"... Stockton to Idaho and back again! Although we have the tastings available daily we will expand our offering at the Holiday Open House on Sunday, November 12. Be sure to stop by to taste away! Once again, please know how grateful we all are at Best Wishes for you, our loyal customers, and your never-ending support and your faithfulness to shop local. We all appreciate you! Happy Fall and the Happiest of Thanksgivings to all! n

lothes, shoes and accessories are lined up at our fingertips at various Lincoln Center shops every day. Business owners happily guide you through their stores, showing you all the latest attire – the exact pieces they picked out many months before you stopped in. There’s a whole process to filling Lincoln Center stores with the best items. Often six months prior, business owners start looking at the season’s new trends – going through designers’ catalogs and choosing which things would go best in their stores. They head off to markets all around California and sometimes even on the East Coast, where they place orders with manufacturers and designers. Most of the time, owners go to market with specific intentions – they’ve done their research and know exactly what to order. Other times, they have to take risks. Since they place orders months – and often a year – in advance, store owners aren’t certain customers will still want the products when they actually appear in-store. While Flair Boutique owner Starr Donati knows what works best in her store, she also has to know her customers’ desires. “We select

CoAT

not just what we personally like, but what we feel we can sell to our customers, our community,” she says. For Sassy Pants owner Angela Karp, going to market involves a lot of strategy. “We have to think about what customers will like a year down the road,” she says. Markets are not only opportunities for store owners to buy the coming season’s inventory, but they are also indicators for manufacturers – they find out how much they will produce, depending on the response they get from buyers. Going to market is a collaborative process between business owners and manufacturers. The relationships they build over the years allow them to help each other out. While Lincoln Center stores showcase brands on their shelves, designers direct customers to businesses that carry their lines. This fall, you can browse Lincoln Center shops knowing that owners are going above and beyond to meet your needs, even before you know it. Check out new fall trends from some of your favorite spots in the Center!

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR

MIKE ROBINSON Owner, Nothing Bundt Cakes What is your favorite sport? Technically, my wife Beverly would tell you my favorite sport is any one that consists of kicking, throwing, shooting or running with an object. But in all seriousness, Ice Hockey is my absolute favorite. I played it for many years since I was about five and I still like to go out and lace ’em up. We have also been San Jose Sharks season ticket holders since they came to California in 1991. What is one thing you are most proud of? My Family When did Nothing Bundt Cakes open? Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in 1996 in Las Vegas, and there are now over 250 bakeries open. When we opened in August of 2014 in Stockton, we were bakery #100. Lots of growth, especially on the east coast and in the midwest. It is an amazing brand, and I love being a part of it. What do you like to do on your days off? I’m usually in Lincoln Center enjoying an adult beverage! I’m a huge foodie, and will travel anywhere for a unique meal!

What is your dream vacation? A Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives restaurant tour across the USA! What’s the biggest cake order you’ve ever done? 5,000 bundtinis What’s your favorite flavor at Nothing Bundt Cakes? Chocolate Chocolate Chip – hands down! What’s the busiest time of the year at Nothing Bundt Cakes? October, November and December What’s the most popular flavor? Lemon Tell us about your nickname. Everyone around town calls me the Bundt King of Stockton because let’s face it – I basically am! Tell us about your involvement with the community. I truly love Stockton and the people in it. I am involved heavily with an amazing organization called Child Abuse Prevention Council, as well as many other events/charities throughout the year. Now that my wife and I are empty-nesters (our daughter Cassie is attending Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena), we plan to be involved in many more charities. n

SPEC IAL FEATURE | Bud’s Seafood Grille Bud’s parents relocated to California from Arkansas when he was 2 years old. His mother was a wonderful southern cook. As a wedding shower gift, she gave me two cast iron skillets, a must-have in southern cooking, and the only pan she used to make cornbread in. I loved her cornbread – it’s not sweet or cakey like most cornbread recipes, because it doesn’t contain sugar or eggs. It is a simple, bread-like cornbread, and I not only make it to go with a meal but it is the bread base I use for cornbread dressing, another favorite recipe of hers. She made many of her recipes without measuring, so it was hard for me to recreate them without watching her closely and guessing the measurements. I’ve been making this cornbread in my trusty, well-seasoned, cast iron skillet for almost 49 years now and it’s good, but I don’t think it will ever taste as good as hers!

Buy a $25 gift card and get a $5 free on Black Friday!

1 cup white cornmeal 1 cup flour 1 tbsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1 ¼ cup buttermilk 2 tbsp canola oil Wisk dry ingredients together. Add butter milk and mix well. Consisten cy should be wet like cake batter. Don’t be afra id to add more butter milk. Heat 8-inch skillet on stove with 2 tablespo ons oil. Truth be told, the oil was often bacon gr ease and more than the 2 tablespoons listed. Whe n skillet is hot, pour in batter and put skillet in a hot 400-degree oven for about 25 minutes until cornbread turns a beau tiful brown. It should m ake eight nice size pieces of cornbread.

PARTNERING FOR CHANGE By: Jennifer Tudor

I

t requires a strong vision and determination to impact a seemingly intractable problem like homelessness.

On any given night, more than half a million people are without permanent homes in the United States. And Stockton is not immune. So how does a community combat a growing problem like homelessness? There are simply not enough government resources available, so cities rely on non-profit agencies to help. In turn, organizations like the Gospel Center Rescue Mission (GCRM) largely depend on charitable donations from individuals and businesses to help fund their programs — and look for creative ways to broaden community awareness. For over 75 years GCRM has served the Stockton and surrounding communities by providing food, shelter, clothing, addiction treatment and medical care for the homeless. And since its inception, GRMC has remained true to its core belief that each and every homeless person is an individual — not a statistic. When a person walks through the doors at the Gospel Center they might be seeking temporary shelter or a hot meal, but what they get is an opportunity to change their lives. When Wayne Richardson took over the CEO position in 2016, he envisioned new ways to strengthen community relationships and broaden awareness of GCRM through partnerships with corporations.

“When we realized just how bad the homeless situation has gotten here, we wanted to make a commitment to help…and not just a one-time donation,” says Johnson. “We have the resources and the passion to make a positive social impact, and the fact that we can actually sponsor individuals on their path to leading productive lives is powerful.” PHIL JOHNSON | President of Lincoln Center

Wayne Richardson and Phil Johnson

And Lincoln Center was a logical choice — a locally owned and operated business with strong community ties. The partnership with Lincoln Center offers a unique opportunity to help the homeless a bit differently than traditional philanthropy. As Richardson explains, “Instead of just a check being written we are joining forces to help work on the homelessness problem together. It enables a branding of a non-profit like ourselves with a community leader like Lincoln Center and becomes a winning situation for us both.” President and CEO of Lincoln Center, Phil Johnson, is proud of the partnership and three-year commitment to partner with the agency. “When we realized just how bad the homeless situation has gotten here, we wanted to make a commitment to help…and not just a one-time donation,” says Johnson. “We have the resources and the passion to make a positive social impact, and the fact that we can actually sponsor individuals on their path to leading productive lives is powerful.” Lincoln Center has pledged financial, promotional and hands-on support. Last month several volunteers from Lincoln Center rolled up their sleeves and painted at the Gospel Center as part of the “Love Stockton” work day. Another mutual benefit of the partnering, Richardson says, is that the branding includes all Lincoln Center merchants. They can feel good about making a difference in the community, and their

customers can embrace all of the various promotional activities to support a cause that affects all of society. This partnership is the first of its kind in over 300 Associations of Gospel Rescue Missions, and Richardson praises Lincoln Center as the “George Washington” of cause-related marketing for homeless shelters and local business. In his short time at GCRM Richardson has implemented new policies and procedures, upgraded and expanded facilities, and clearly laid out plans for the future. Partnering with Lincoln Center is another positive step for the Gospel Center and in the fight against homelessness, and Richardson is continuing to forge relationships with other area business leaders, organizations and agencies. He wants to see all “ships rise with the tide” and join together — with the ultimate goal of restoring lives. n

BILLY FREEMAN 6-MONTH GRADUATE / LINCOLN CENTER SCHOLAR Billy was a major-league baseball prospect whose life changed when he blew his knee out in college. Drugs, depression and alcohol took him down a dark path for many years — until he walked through the doors at GCRM. He found a new purpose in life, and is currently managing the Learning Center. LINDSEY AGUILERA 6-MONTH GRADUATE / LINCOLN CENTER SCHOLAR Lindsey is in the second phase of the New Life Program. Her poor choices as a teenager led to drug and alcohol addiction, and prior to completing the treatment program she was living at the Gospel Center with her mom and young daughter. She says that due to the Gospel Center’s ministry, she now has faith that God has better plans for her life.

St. Joseph’s Offers New Approach for Hip Replacement St. Joseph’s Orthopedic Services is excited to be the first in our community to now offer the anterior approach for hip replacement. With the this new innovative approach, the incision is made at the front of the hip, as opposed to the traditional posterior approach, where the incision is made on the side. The anterior approach is an example of evolving surgical techniques designed to improve outcomes for patients. “The hip joint and affected muscles are accessed differently with the anterior approach,” says orthopedic surgeon Jaspreet Sidhu, D.O. “As a result; studies are showing that for many patients, the benefits are less damage to major muscles, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.” To learn more about St. Joseph’s advanced orthopedic services, including robotic assisted knee-replacement, call our orthopedics patient navigator at 209.939.4517 or visit StJosephsCares.org/Ortho.

Dr. Sidhu practices at Alpine Medical Group and is on staff at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He is a Fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in anterior approach hip replacement, total knee replacement, and complex revision knee/hip replacement. To learn more about Dr. Sidhu visit alpineorthopaedic.com or call 209.948.3333.
