A Heart for Encouragement
On Thursday 11 June, we celebrate St Barnabas the Apostle. Acts describes Barnabas as “a Levite from Cyprus” who sold his land and gave the proceeds to the Christian community, embracing the radical generosity of the first believers. He became a bridge‑builder, introducing Paul to the leaders in Jerusalem and later guiding the growing church in Antioch as it welcomed non‑Jewish believers . His very name speaks volumes; the Greek translation of his name means “son of encouragement.”
The very word encourage carries a beautiful meaning: to “put heart into” someone. It comes from the Latin “cor” –heart‑ and the Old French “en”‑ meaning “to make or put in,” so to encourage is literally to “put heart into another.” Few figures in the early Church embody this more fully than St Barnabas.
Barnabas encouraged by giving, by welcoming, by trusting, and by believing in the potential of others. He “put heart into” Paul when others were unsure of him. He strengthened new Christians as the Gospel spread across cultures. And even when he and Paul later parted ways, Barnabas continued his mission, travelling to Cyprus where tradition says he was martyred.
His collect beautifully captures his legacy as it says, God “poured his Spirit upon his servant Barnabas and gave him grace to encourage others” and so calls us to be “generous in our judgements and unselfish in our service.”
In our own churches today, encouragement remains a quiet but powerful ministry, a ministry in which we can all share. We encourage when we offer hope to those who feel weary or overlooked, we encourage when we take the time to listen to others, we encourage when we notice and welcome those on the fringe of our communities. Like Barnabas, we can become people who put heart into others, we can be people who help courage take root.
As St Paul writes in his first letter to the Thessalonians, “therefore encourage one another and build up each other.”
May St Barnabas inspire us all to be bearers of hope, builders of unity, and everyday encouragers in Christ’s name.

Stillpoint
This is a time of guided silent prayer to be still and aware of the presence of God. We meet in the Longland Chantry from 9.15am to 9.45am on the following Mondays: 6 July, 7 September, 5 October, 2 November, 7 December
The Feast of Corpus Christi
Thursday 4 June is the Feast of Corpus Christi when we celebrate Christ’s gift of the Eucharist to the Church. In addition to our usual services there will be:
5.30pm Festal Evensong 7.30pm Sung Eucharist, Procession (to St Paul at the Bail) and Benediction

Choral Mattins
Choral Mattins is held once a month on a Sunday at 9.30am. The next Choral Mattins service will be on 7 June
Service of Pilgrimage
Thursday 16 July, 7pm
The Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary invite you to join a service of pilgrimage through Lincoln Cathedral, led by the Dean and Succentor, concluding with Eucharist at the East End. All are welcome.
Community
Funeral of Sue Ridley
Sue Ridley, who was PA to the Subdean and secretary for the music appeal for many years, has recently passed away. Her funeral will take place on Wednesday 10 June at 2pm at the Lincoln Crematorium and afterwards in The Turk’s Head at Heighington.
Exchequergate Volunteers
In celebration of Volunteers’ Week at the Cathedral, Phoebe Maris, Special Collections Librarian, shares some of the fabulous work the Exchequergate volunteers have been doing.
The postcards below are not part of our official collection, but were found in Phoebe’s office when she moved in. It is a set of six Lincoln Cathedral Library postcards (although we only have five!) that would have been sold here at the Cathedral pre 1970.
The images are elements from books in our collection, or associated artwork from books and printers in the Lincoln area. The volunteers in Exchequergate, Nick, Johnathan, Hande, and Bee, created a phase box from archival card to allow the postcards to be stored safely, and made clear Melinex encapsulation sleeves for each card and the envelope to allow them to be handled without causing any damage to the items.
Volunteers’ Week
We’ve had a joyous time celebrating Volunteers’ Week with tours, cakes, coffee and talks galore! Thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do, and for being such an important part of the Cathedral community.
Book Group Meeting
Join us for the next Book Group meeting for The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr, to be held on Tuesday 16 June from 4‑5pm in the Wickham Room. We will be looking at Chapters 3 and 4. All are welcome to join, and the book is available at the Cathedral Shop.
The Friends of Lincoln Cathedral Talk Series
Tuesday 30 June 2026 5pm‑7:30pm
The Friends invite you to join us in the Chapter House for a fascinating talk by Judi Jones, entitled “It Really Did Happen Here!... Historic Events and People in Lincoln Cathedral Chapter House.” It will be followed by a glass of wine or soft drinks, and nibbles.
Places are limited. Please email friends@ lincolncathedral.com by Monday 22 June to reserve seats. The talk is free for our own members, Cathedral volunteers or the Cathedral members. For other guests we suggest a donation of £10, which can be made on the night.
Future talks will be on Wednesday 22 July, at 5pm, by Cathedral archaeologist Jonathan Clark, and on Wednesday 21 October at 2pm, by Dr Richard Fisher, Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Bristol. More details to follow.
Staff News
We’re pleased to announce that this week Isobel Hutchinson will begin her new role as a verger. She will also take up the post of Works and Facilities Administrator in a couple of weeks. We also welcome Zoe Williams to the team as HR Administrator.

Earlier this week, we said farewell to Stewart Welch, who has stepped down as Joint Head Guide. We’d like to thank him for his time and commitment to Lincoln Cathedral. We welcome Tean Buthcher as he takes on the role, alongside Barbara Buckingham.
Christmas Cards
The Friends of Lincoln Cathedral currently have a surplus of previous years’ Christmas cards, available in a variety of designs which are being offered in exchange for a small cash donation. Cards can be collected from the Friends’ office at Exchequergate House, 18a Minster Yard, LN2 1PX on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 12.30pm.
LCCC Summer Visit
Saturday 11 July
You are invited to join us on our annual Summer Visit, which this year is to Stow Minster.
We will meet at the Minster at 10.30am, where tea & coffee will be available, followed by a guided tour of this historic church, after which we will enjoy a BYO picnic lunch together. Finally, Dr Johanne Gregory, a local historian and one of our cathedral servers, will talk about the history of the area. We anticipate that the visit will end around 2.30pm, but there will also be an opportunity to visit St Edith’s at Coates.

Minibus Driver Vacancy

Botanical Bounty Exhibition
Monday 15 June to Sunday 21 June, 10am to 4pm
Lincolnshire Textiles is a long established group of textile and embroidery enthusiasts from across the county. ‘Botanical Bounty’ brings together a rich variety of work inspired by the natural world. Leaves, flowers, seeds and organic forms are explored through traditional embroidery, mixed media and experimental textile techniques. While some pieces draw on established traditions, others push materials and processes in new directions, demonstrating how textile practice continues to evolve.
On Sunday 21 June the exhibition will be open from 1pm to 3pm.
Lincoln Symphony Orchestra – Summer Concert

Join the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra for their summer concert, featuring the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2025 favourite, Piano Concerto No.2 – Sergei Rachmaninoff and Symphony No.3 –Camille Saint Saëns.
