In an urban framework that has limited space for parks, an opportunity arises within the confines of a high-rise building. The NoHo Athletic Center was envisaged as a hybridized environment- one that could respect the neighborhood's identity and integrate the experience of strolling through one of New York's parks. Visitors are invited to take a stroll in a vertical promenade that immerses one within the built and natural environment.

Basketball Court Onlookers can watch basketball games as they make their way up or down the vertical promenade.

Process Sketches Three main design questions were explored: 1. What facade treatment will achieve visual continuity with the neighborhood without compromising the design 2. Could interior circulation and visual connectivity add to the overall experience 3. How will people transition from the sidewalk to the Center 10

Sidewalk / Entryway Transition The pedestrian walkway on Bond Street bleeds into the Center’s entrance.

The NoHo Cafe depicted below is situated on the corner of Bond St. and Bowery. The cafe's visibility is maximized by raising it above the sidewalk, attracting the attention of passerbys and adding to the visual and social experience.

Commercial Spaces The ground and second level of the Center serve as public commercial spaces. They are accessible to all visitors that are not using the athletic facilities.

TRANSGENIC BIOMES Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida

A Living Architecture Transgenic Biomes is based on research of emerging technologies and synthetic biology applicable to architecture. This theoretical project strives to coalesce the realm of architecture and biology into a new, organic typology for future structures.

Visitors are invited to interact with their environment with a different mindset.

Buildings are typically inanimate, static and unchanging; however, these biomes will compel people to see this exotic environment as a living architecture.

Ultimately, the aim of creating a responsive, organic structure is to induce a heightened sense of concern and care for the environment. This is achieved through a direct action-reaction exchange between people and these bioactive membranes.

Biomes of Biscayne Bay Users climb the membranes and further explore their alien-like surroundings.

Projected Growth Transgenic Biomes is a selfreproducing system that grows exponentially. Given approximately 30 years, a new artificial island is born.

MORPHING MEMBRANES The Biome's Building Blocks Research of biology and the application of a synthetic growth is envisioned to create a superficial living environment.

Through a process of calcified algaebased gels, embryonic development, and the fast production rate of spores , these natural systems are fused to create a mechanism for growing cities, spaces, and more.

Maturing Membrane The model represents a calcified exoskeleton that serves to protect a developing membrane.

Once matured, the protective barrier will breakdown, leaving behind the mature morphing membrane.

Exoskeleton The exoskeleton acts as a protective barrier and is made by crustose coralline algae. The cement-like crust seals gaps and fragments, providing extra support against rough waves.

Amniotic Sac The amniotic sac develops after the exoskeleton forms. This membrane is made up of algae and other gellike biomaterial which coagulate and harden into its final form.

Spores Spores propagate and accumulate on the surface of the sac. They act much like the mechanosensory hairs on a Venus flytrap. *The image sequence only depicts the spores for illustrative purposes.

Symbiosis Membrane and sensory spores work in unison. When these receptors are stimulated, the membrane reacts in response to the external stimuli.

Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida With sea level on the rise, all facets of our lives will be affected, including the workplace. Strata Spire envisions the future of the typical tower and office typology and addresses the impending effects of global warming. Solutions to the inevitable catastrophic category 5 hurricanes are explored and implemented. The design also strives to meet the standards of the AIA 2030 benchmarks by integrating systems to ensure carbon neutrality.

SITE MASTER PLAN The artificial island serves the greater Miami area, with a variety of amenities provided on site. Public transportation is available, facilitating trips to and from distant neighborhoods. Strata Spire park and recreations are made easily accessible to all, making this "work and play" experience possible.

Carbon Neutral Design The Strata Spire has prioritized creating an eco-friendly and carbon neutral design. Understanding the environmental conditions in South Florida informed design decisions such as determining which active and passive systems are viable.

As such, the towers were successful in mitigating long-term environmental degradation and eliminating what could exacerbate the climate crisis.

Form Finding The design process began with a massing study which was refined in order to reduce solar radiation on the major facades. Carving out the massing created an overhang condition at the mid-section, in turn helping shade the lower levels. After refining the forms, we found the rounded convex tower to be optimal for the environmental conditions.

Structural Components The towers utilize a steel diagrid with a main core supporting the floor plates. Precedent studies include works by Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid.

Capturing the Moment The Olympics Pavilion emulates the intensity and vibrancy of Tokyo. To highlight the memorable experience of this cityscape, the pavilion’s mirror-like surface projects the surrounding environment in a whimsical and playful fashion.

Ultimately, locals and tourists will be confronted with a 360 degree panoramic view that magnifies their surroundings and responds to users through a series of reactive, ribbed enclosures.

Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida The premise of the Flex Market is to establish an identity for the existing Farmer’s Market by prioritizing diversity through unique and personalized spaces. The charm of the current farmer’s market is the vibrancy brought forth by different cultures and the social engagement between vendors and visitors. To highlight these social engagements of different people and cultures, a softscape of translucent enclosures are utilized to dissolve boundaries prescribed by the social and physical construct.

Second Level - Market The bridge on the second level connects the food market with the food court. These two programs overlooks the Flex Cafe, and the Market seating area situated directly underneath.

MASTER PLAN The challenge of the project was ensuring that zero trees were removed or replaced for the design and construction of the new Flex Market. As a result, the existing trees are integrated with the programs to create a borderless environment SECTION where interior and exterior blur.

Process Collage Sketches

The Veil The cords anchored on the ground create intermediate spaces between the interior and exterior of programs. The veillike effect creates intimacy while maintaining visibility throughout the Flex Market grounds.
