AROUND THE INDUSTRY by Kiley McKinna

2024 Bull Sale Season— A New Year Brings New Optimism

elcome to the Limousin365 annual Spring Sale Edition! As you page through this issue, you’ll find many of the breed’s most relevant and progressive programs highlighted and several of the breed’s finest spring sales showcased in accompaniment with multiple feature stories and industry news. It’s official, 2023 is firmly in our rear-view mirrors and now it’s time to hit the trail and dive into what we hope is a great 2024 spring sale season loaded with optimism! As I write this column, I can’t help but be thrilled with the market and opportunities presented to breeders this year—A New Year Brings New Optimism! So, let’s dive right in and open the discussion on a few things we can be optimistic about heading into the new year.

Promising Bull Sale Season Ahead

Within a long list of things breeders and buyers can get excited about—a promising upcoming bull sale season is at the forefront. As the season is right around the corner, we foresee that demand will be high, regardless of geographical location. With desirable marketing tools, a booming market and high-quality genetics, breeders should be excited. By utilizing these aspects of the industry, producers are setting themselves up for success, and we look forward to helping your program flourish with the opportunities the market is presenting.

Thriving Market

Optimism has returned to the cattle markets as the books are opened in 2024. As they head to the pay window, market participants will be reminded just how tight cattle supplies will be the next few years. Producers marketing cattle this year will witness a strengthened

6

market. As we expect prices to continue to increase at the start of the new year, we also need to recognize the low cattle inventory causing this positively trending market. Producers are keeping fewer cows due to drought and higher input costs compared to previous years. We should expect to see high prices throughout the upcoming months, well into the new year.

Desirable Marketing Tools

Now is the time to sell and there are many sensible options for marketing your product. Marketing for many is strictly thought of as “selling”, but to the savvy livestock producer, marketing is part of promoting their brand and its value. By taking advantage of marketing tools such as print, the web, Facebook, Instagram, cell phone videos, etc., breeders can put their program in front of many prospective buyers. Each tool has value and when used in the correct context, it allows you to highlight your initiatives and drive consumers to your cattle. In closing, I sincerely hope you enjoy our Spring Sale Edition and are just as optimistic about the New Year as we are. This magazine is of benefit to your program and a promotional piece the Limousin breed can be proud of. A big thank-you to all the advertisers, readership and those who continue to support this endeavor and offer feedback as it relates to your magazine, Limousin365. God bless and I look forward to seeing you down the sale trail this spring. We are all in this together, remain Limousin Proud.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Bruce Lawrence

I

would like to Thank the NALF Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity to serve the past two years as your President. I have enjoyed the challenge of serving as President of an outstanding board that NALF is represented by! This opportunity to serve would not be nearly as pleasant without being backed by a great group of board members and an outstanding NALF staff. The calves are weaned! The research project we have been telling our membership about for the past two years has reached a major milestone in that our two cooperator ranches recently delivered 217 head of calves to the SDSU research facility in Brookings, South Dakota. Thank you can never be said enough to Mark and Tammy

Anderson for all of the time and dedication to this project to get us to the point we are today! That being said, we still need to raise more funding to get this project completed and not create a strain on NALF cash reserves. If you would like more information on this project or to make a tax-free donation to support the research project, contact Mark Anderson or one of your board members. As I write this letter, the NALF board just completed our winter board meeting. Again, I would like to thank each of our board members for giving their time to attend these board meetings! NALF had a productive winter meeting, and we are very close to releasing new EPDs and indices relevant to the commercial buyer of our Limousin genetics over the next decade. I look forward to seeing many of you in Oklahoma City at Cattlemen’s Congress and Denver at the National Western Stock Show. The chance to visit with fellow breeders and members of the association along with the ability to showcase our Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics to the industry continually inspires us to be in this business. I would also like to take a moment to thank so many of you, our Limousin family, for the many acts of kindness and expressions of sympathy shown to our family during our loss of Tucker. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY by Mark Anderson Executive Director North American Limousin Foundation

State Of The Breed

T

he North American Limousin Foundation completed an active and successful year which encompassed various fronts. NALF upgraded its EPD trait deck with four new EPDs and a new terminal index that further defines the breeds commercial relevance. NALRF moved into Phase 2 of its research project and shipped calves from its Montana ranch cooperators to South Dakota State University in early November. The membership and association remains in a strong position heading into 2024. A strong bull sale season in the spring of 2023 coincided with continued advancements in NALF with genetic progress made within the national cattle evaluation produced by IGS. Limousin Breeders have responded to current market signals and continue to make gains in traits of economic performance impacting the commercial cattle industry. This has put the Limousin breed in better position with its competitors as we strive to capture a larger share of the industry’s bull buying customers. Registrations increased slightly, up 2% ending at 15,033 head. Whole herd LIMS registrations also increased slightly with LIMS income totaling $331,958 versus $329,010 the previous year. Even though registrations increased slightly, Non-LIMS income did decline by approximately $17,000 for the year with a higher percentage of this year’s Non-LIMS income consisting of younger cattle as compared to the previous year. During 2022-2023, NALF was able to effectively provide services to membership ranging from DNA services, EPD improvements, expanding the commercial marketing initiative, and continuing the Montana NALRF research project that will help analyze heterosis effects of using Limousin on commercial Angus cows. This will hopefully help market the advantages of Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics to the commercial cattle industry. NALF recorded a profit of $12,266.65 for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. NALEC also finished with a profit of $13,559.89. This enabled the Foundation to invest back into the breed via the NALRF research project and improved commercial marketing budgets. NALF was also able to incorporate phenotypes from the BeefBuilder cattle into its gestation length EPD which further enhances the accuracy of the EPD for all members. This was done very similar to the inclusion of the BeefBuilder carcass phenotypes

12

a couple of years ago. NALF now has more than 150,000 carcass phenotypes included in its National Cattle Evaluation which makes it the leader in capturing actual carcass data among breed associations in the United States. EPD trait improvements continue to be made this past year to the National Cattle Evaluation generated weekly by International Genetic Solutions. NALF is adding new EPD traits with the completion of the Dry Matter intake EPD generated by IGS along with an average daily gain EPD. This will enable NALF to publish a feed conversion EPD along with a cost of gain EPD for commercial cattlemen that utilize Limousin genetics. NALF will also add an updated terminal index produced via IGENDEC alongside its Mainstream Terminal Index. The new terminal index will more closely reflect market value of cattle given the fact that cattle are now being fed to much larger outweights and a much higher percentage of fed cattle are being sold on carcass grids throughout the U.S. as compared to a decade ago. A maternal index is also in the works once IGS has completed its Mature Cow weight EPD. This inclusion of actual carcass data for ribeye, backfat, marbling, carcass weight and yield grade will be supplemented by the continued submission of scan data that members report to NALF as well. The inclusion of these phenotypes will not only improve accuracy of included sires’ EPDs, but progeny related to them throughout the herdbook. This will also help increase progeny equivalents on carcass traits when members are genomically enhancing their cattle into the NALF herdbook. The NALF board continues to analyze ways for Limousin breeders to have the most up-to-date tools to remain competitive in the production of high quality seedstock throughout the United States. As touched on earlier, the NALF board formed the North American Limousin Foundation Research Fund (NALRF). This will enable us to conduct third-party research promoting the advantages of incorporating Limousin genetics throughout the U.S. Personal donations along with annual NALF contributions are being utilized to fund the account.

“A BREED APART” We hope you will join us for our 42nd sale. We have never chased fads. Our cattle represent three generations of our family who have strived to raise real-world, problem-free cattle that are profitable for our customers. Give us a call with any questions or to request a catalog. Come by our stalls in the yards to view our Purebred and Lim-Flex pens of bulls on display in Denver. We want to thank Hunt Limousin Ranch for purchasing our featured bull last year - RODZ Kingston. Watch for his progeny in their program. Watch for our September and October show heifer and steer sales on SC Online Sales.

NALF shipped 217 head of steers and heifers from Montana to South Dakota State University in early November. The feed performance and carcass data research will be conducted with SDSU. This will track and document performance and carcass differences on comparing Limousin, Lim-Flex® and Angus-sired calves out of commercial Angus cow herd operations. This should provide valuable insight to cost reduction and profit opportunities for beef producers utilizing crossbreeding programs or those potentially looking at utilizing these breeds in a crossbreeding program. Advancements in DNA testing have resulted in increased demand from producers becoming more familiar with the value of having the genomic marker effects incorporated into an animal’s EPD package to enhance the actual genetic potential value of their purchases. Additionally, a rapidly increasing number of seedstock producers are requiring the information to make continued genetic improvements in their herds and enhance their marketing efforts to other breeders as well. The Commercial Marketing and Breed Promotion committee continues to take a more aggressive approach to promoting the breed with an expanded marketing budget this year. Working alongside Limousin365, who produces the official publication of the Limousin breed, promotion of Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle will happen more effectively with the combined effort between the two entities. NALF Media will continue to effectively utilize electronic advertising and communication on its website, Limousin Latest, The Limousin blog, press releases, ad and catalog design and social media moving forward thanks to Mallory Blunier The commercial marketing budget for 2024 was increased to $41,800. After receiving positive traction and pickup of the Limousin Feed Efficiency article written by Burt Rutherford last year, a second article was published in 2023 discussing the value of using Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics when crossed with Angus and Red Angus genetics making the F1 cross female for commercial cattlemen. Please contact Alison Jones at Alison@NALF.org or Tammy Anderson at Tammy@NALF.org if you see cows missing from the LIMS enrollment page or have additional questions. All cows need a calf recorded or a reason for no calf, and each calf needs a weaning weight or a reason for no weaning weight (example: calf died prior to weaning). Every Day Resolution vs. New Year’s Resolution by Randy Ratliff

A

New Year’s resolution, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their behavior at the beginning of a calendar year. Some might say their resolution is a promise you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year. I feel we should have resolutions that are every day and not something we think about only at the beginning of the new year. Here is a check list I feel every breeder should have as daily priorities.

EVERY DAY RESOLUTIONS 1. when a potential buyer comes to view cattle, have professionally printed up paperwork 2. make sure sale tags are out of purchased cattle and you have your own farm/ranch tags in each

3. put the sire and dam name on each tag, so when you are showing the potential buyer your animals, you will know the pedigree

4. have a professional farm/ranch sign at the front entrance

5. have a place where you can invite the potential buyer in for a

beverage and relax to where you can have a chance to recap what

you just showed them

6. If you sell cattle in a sale or privately, send the buyer’s a thank you note or call them to personally thank them for investing in

your program

7. make it a point to reach out to any buyer throughout the year, not just when you have cattle in a sale

8. when there is a live sale happening in the breed, try and personally attend the sale as we all know how it makes us feel when someone

takes time to show up and are interested in your program

9. respect our peers and understand they are on their own path

10. always realize that competition as we know it is dead. Collaboration is the new competition. It’s about working with each other, not against. Together we all win.

s d an

O

utside, scattered across the rolling hills of native Buffalo grass, the cows are grazing quietly. Inside, just as quietly, is Charlie Hunt, with his Bible open on the kitchen table in front of him. Though it’s a rare sight for the Nebraska cattleman to be off his feet, his family knows time with the Lord is one of the few reasons he’ll take a break from work. “His work ethic is absolutely insane,” said his son Dan. Dan proudly shares that his father is known nationwide in the Limousin business. Charlie’s reputation isn’t just about his dedication to the ranching lifestyle, however. Since he and his wife, Nancy, started Hunt Limousin Ranch in 1979, there’s never been a question about the operation’s guiding principles. “Faith, family and just the principle of honesty and integrity,” Dan recites. “It’s gone a long way over the years.” Shortly after Charlie and Nancy were married in 1960, they moved back to rural Oxford, Nebraska, and quickly secured a herd of about 350 black baldy cows. Though Dan claims Charlie “basically never had any intention of being in the seedstock business,” one purchase changed his tune. In 1980 Charlie brought home King Tut, one of the first black, polled, purebred Limousin bulls in the United States. “Long story short, that first calf crop out of King Tut and those baldy cows had neighbors at branding say ‘don’t cut that calf,’ ‘not that calf either,’” Dan said. Charlie realized those Limousin-influenced calves might be the start of something great, and though he never went out and purchased registered Limousin females, the herd was slowly bred up over the years. No females have ever had an easy ride, as Dan said heifers had to prove their worth to replace any of those original baldy cows, but today the ranch is home to about 350 registered Limousin and Lim-Flex females. Currently, Dan handles most of the day-to-day on the ranch, but he’s quick to label the business as a family operation. Charlie—who turned 84 in December—is still outside working every day; Nancy is well known for her skills in the kitchen by many of their customers; Dan’s sister, Sally, runs the books; Sally’s sons, Charles and Clayton, work full-time on the ranch; and Dan’s brother, Dave, plays a big part in crop harvest and calving season. “It’s just kind of all of we focus on really,” Dan admits, even thinking back to his own childhood. Growing up, Dan was naturally drawn to the livestock his father loved. He was an active member of the junior program, and the entire Hunt family considered Junior Nationals to be the event of the year. “That was our family’s big summer trip,” Dan explained. “We worked with our heifers, and wherever Junior Nationals was, that was our vacation.” Dan never doubted his passion for the industry, but it took a few interviews at various companies in Lincoln, Nebraska, for him to realize he wasn’t interested in city life and his heart was back home. It’s now been 24 years since Dan jumped into the ranching business full time, and he’s never looked back. “I was pretty much born into this operation, and I just kind of knew all along this is what I wanted to do,” he said. continued on page 28 • JANUARY 2024

The Hunt family started selling private treaty bulls in 1980, and it’s been their “bread and butter” ever since. While select top bulls have been offered in an online auction format the past two years, Dan still enjoys being able to work with customers via private offerings. Most of what Dan has learned about the cattle industry has been passed down from his father, but there is always more to learn at Hunt Limousin Ranch. The family has a lot of irons in the fire—beyond the registered herd, they have a calf buy-back and heifer development program, run a 1,500 head backgrounding lot, sell about 100 head of locker beef annually and operate close to 2,500 acres of row crops. Though every element is worthy of praise, Dan labels the registered herd as the most notable arm of the operation. Dan’s ideal Limousin animal is a moderate-framed individual that offers good calving-ease and rapid growth but keeps a cool head in the pasture and the chutes. None of the genetics or docility can be substituted for high end carcass qualities, however. Cattle aren’t babied—creep feed is never offered—and that’s how Dan said he learns which animals are actually doing their jobs. It’s a seedstock operation with a commercial mindset, he adds. It’s a focus that pays off for their customers. “Our genetics work in any environment. We make them work for a living here, so we are confident our genetics will work wherever they are across the country,” he said. “Our genetics are real. I think that’s why a lot of people come to us; they can really trust us, our program and our cattle.” Customers come to the ranch year-round, often making plans to look at cattle in the morning so they can enjoy a good home-cooked noon meal prepared by Nancy before heading back home. “We try to help our customers purchase bulls that give them the most profit potential for their herd,” Dan explained. The family started selling private treaty bulls in 1980, and Dan said it’s been their “bread and butter” ever since. Today, the Hunt family matches 80-90 bulls a year to families across the country. Without the hectic chanting of a live auction, Dan said he’s putting his customers in a relaxed atmosphere where they can make the best purchase decisions possible. Though select top bulls have been offered in an online auction format the past two years, Dan said he’s still enjoys being able to work with customers through private offerings. continued on page 30

Potential Surprises That Could Impact Agriculture In 2024 by Tyne Morgan

F

rom the election to world trade, as well as geopolitical factors that have the potential to shape agriculture in 2024, ag economists think the coming year is poised for several possible surprises that could have a direct impact on farmers across the U.S. The December Ag Economists’ Monthly Monitor, a survey conducted by University of Missouri and Farm Journal, shows economists’ views on the ag economy are slightly more positive compared with the past month. While expectations about 2024 net farm income remained steady, ag economists’ outlook for the year ahead grew slightly more pessimistic. Nearly 70 ag economists are invited to participate in the survey each month. When asked the two most important factors driving

agriculture’s economic health today, as well as over the next 12 months, views were mixed. “Macroeconomic influences, including persistent interest rate pressure and dollar value,” responded one economist in the anonymous survey. “Declining prices for most major commodities reducing receipts and tightening margins despite some input prices retreating,” said another economist. “There is also some concern about multiple years of lower net farm income beginning to weaken relatively strong farm financial positions.” continued on page 36

continued from page 34 “Macroeconomic influences, like interest rates and dollar value, and the impact of fund positions in the commodities markets are impacting the current environment,” was another response from the survey. “There’s been some improvement in recent months, but farmers are still facing relatively high costs and low commodity prices resulting in tight margins. Over the next 12 months, I marked unchanged for state of the ag economy on the expectation for continued improvement in macro influences and margins, but also multiple years of lower net income environment beginning to weaken the strong farm financial positions of the past few years.”

What Shaped Crop and Livestock Prices in 2023?

When asked the biggest event or factor that impacted crop prices in 2023, ag economists said it’s all about supply and demand, sprinkled in with impacts from the strong U.S. dollar. They said:

She was the Division II Reserve Champion at the 2023 Junior Nationals for Tripp Phillips of Geary, OK.

• China falls into big recession. • A second extension of the farm bill. • Corn prices test $4 again. • Inflation supports managed money returning to the commodities again. • Record beef imports in 2023. • National corn yield >190 bpa; U.S. embargoes ag exports to China. • End to Russia/Ukraine war bumps global food grain supplies and cuts prices. • 2024 planted acres across all crops similar to 2023. • Economic woes unfold for U.S. agriculture as input costs remain high and farm prices falter.

• Large corn acreage and rebound in the U.S. corn crop, despite weather challenges. • Build back of stocks levels globally for crops, including exports from Brazil, Russia and other key areas. • Price retreat based on weak demand and rebounding yields; also higher interest rates contributing to stronger dollar and weaker demand. For livestock prices, ag economists say 2023 was more about cow numbers. • Low beef cow inventory due to continuing effects of weather challenges and economics supporting high prices. • Price pressure among other livestock commodities.

2024: Biggest Economic Concerns

Ag economists were also asked to look ahead at 2024. When asked what they are most concerned about when it comes to the ag economy, • JANUARY 2024

geopolitical issues and the U.S. presidential election rose to the top of their concerns, including: • Geopolitical factors, including war and disruption, global competition and other potential disruptions. • Domestic politics, including the 2024 election and policy detrimental to biofuels use, and government debt leading to rising interest rates and finance costs. • Decline in commodity prices paired with increasing input and land costs, leading to squeeze in margins.

Optimism for 2024

There is also optimism for the year ahead, which is sprouting from the possibility for continued improvement in drought as well as new areas of demand. Ag economists were asked what they’re most optimistic about when it comes to the ag economy, and economists surveyed said: • Demand opportunities through domestic soybean crushing, renewable fuel, SAF and global oilseed. • Robust domestic consumption and opportunity for competitive pricing of U.S. commodities in global markets. continued on page 38

“Crop prices could fall further, adding to a price-cost squeeze for many crop producers. Such a development would, of course, tend to help the livestock sector. We could be entering a period where the fortunes of crop and livestock producers may diverge,” said one economist this month.

“South American competition as well as authoritarian governments in places like Argentina, the Netherlands and possibly the U.S.,” responded another economist.

Recession or Soft Landing in 2024

The U.S. avoided a recession in 2023, and majority of ag economists think the U.S. won’t enter a recession in 2024. After the Federal Reserve hinted toward interest rate cuts in 2024, some think there’s still a chance the country will see a slight increase in rates in 2024. The majority said they expect a 0% to 1% decline in interest rates in 2024. While one economist warned of the impacts if the Fed were to start cutting rates too soon, economists point out the general economy has been resilient in spite of wars and inflation. “It now looks like a fairly soft landing,” said one economist regarding the outlook for interest rates and whether the U.S. will enter into a recession next year. “Some leading indicators continue to point toward recession, but so far, the economy has avoided recession. The December FOMC dot plot and post-meeting comments reiterate their efforts to guide the economy to a soft-landing,” said another economist “There are certainly risks, but the odds of ‘muddling through’ appear to be rising,” said one economist in the survey. “With inflation declining, the Fed may be able to relax interest-rate policies in late 2024.” However, not all economists are in the camp the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next year. “It may be a mild one if it occurs. If it doesn’t occur, that will suggest risk of higher interest rates,” said another economist. “There are a lot of mixed signals in the economy,” pointed out another economist. “GDP is growing, inflation is cooling off, low unemployment, growing stock market—all positive. Higher interest rates, credit card balances are negatives.”

Expanding N Horizons The Byers family are as excited as ever for the future. by Sarah Anne Johnson

estled deep in the Smoky Mountains of Johnson City, Tennessee, is Cross Creek Farm and the Byers family. David Byers, his wife Beverly, their two daughters, Aleah (nine years old) and Abbigail (five years old) along with David’s parents, Jimmy and Cathy Byers, own and operate Cross Creek Farm. It all began in 1995 when David’s father, Jimmy, purchased five red Fullblood Limousin heifers. At the young age of nine, David began showing three of their red Fullblood females. “We started with those five 747 daughters and went from there,” David said. “My dad chose Limousin cattle mainly for their carcass qualities and muscle.” Today, 120 registered Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle are at the heart of the Cross Creek Farm program. “We’ve been pretty aggressive with our buying,” David said. “When we decided to get serious with this five years ago, we went to Edwards Land & Cattle Co. and Pinegar Limousin. We’ve built our program around those two programs and individuals involved with them. We decided to do that because we wanted the best animals we could get in bulk numbers and at that time that’s what suited us.” David and his family are the largest Limousin breeder in the state of Tennessee and their main focus is marketing quality herd sire prospects and replacement females. “We would like to continue to build our program to be one of the go-to places for Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics in the East,” David remarked. What David appreciates most about the Limousin breed is the longevity, docility and maternal qualities present in the females. “The docility in the breed has changed so much since we started. It’s entirely different now and if we could change some perspectives that are still out there about their docility, it’ll just keep getting continued on page 44 David’s parents, Jimmy and Cathy Byers, purchased five Fullblood Limousin heifers in 1995 mainly for their carcass qualities and muscle.

Docility & Calving Ease Feed Efficiency & Carcass Merit Improved Marbling

“Docility and calving ease are the two number-one things for a commercial rancher. And the docility of the Lim-Flex is really great. But calving ease is top of the line. She has to be able to produce a calf without a lot of problems.” - Shane Whiting, Commercial Cow/Calf Producer “Using a Continental breed such as Limousin or Lim-Flex on a British-based cow herd gives you the best of both worlds – the maximum combination of a balance between gain, feed efficiency and carcass quality.” - Dr. Kee Jim, CEO of Feedlot Health Management Services “Genomic testing, breeder focus and the heritability of carcass traits have enabled all of us as seedstock producers to make rapid genetic gain in carcass quality. In fact, the marbling EPD value in our breed reflects an improvement of 0.25 to 0.35 for both Limousin and Lim-Flex, making them very comparable to other Continental breeds.” - Dan Hunt, Commercial Cow/Calf Producer

Preparation Is Key To AStepsSuccessful Calving Season for cattle producers before and after calving.

K

ansas State University veterinarian Gregg Hanzlicek says being prepared ahead of calving season is the best way for producers to assure they will have newborn calves successfully. “We’re approaching the end of the second trimester and moving into the third trimester, which means the metabolic demands of that cow or heifer are going to increase tremendously,” Hanzlicek says. A key to having a successful calving and production season is for cows and heifers to be in the appropriate body condition, which according to Hanzlicek is a score of 5-7. He said he has seen many cattle in the 3-4 range in the past few months. “We’re far enough away from calving that we can add condition to these cows and heifers without (creating) an economic burden,” he explains. “It really comes down to having a formulated ration that is balanced for protein and energy.” For those wanting to add scour vaccines to their prevention program, “it’s time to decide what vaccine they are going to use,” Hanzlicek says. “Look at the label and schedule on the calendar when they need to start vaccinating the cows and heifers.”

Hanzlicek says heifers will require two doses of the scours vaccine, while cows need one. The timing of those vaccines is “very, very important,” he adds. Also, Hanzlicek recommends establishing a clean calving area to help reduce the risk of scours. “There’s two major risk factors for scours,” he notes. “One is the lack of colostrum consumption. The other is a contaminated environment the babies are born into.” Hanzlicek recommends having a location to move the pairs off the calving area to keep the calving facility less contaminated with scour organisms. Getting the calf here safely is another factor to consider, “Most operations are going to have to help at least one animal during the calving season,” Hanzlicek says. The last national survey indicated that 1 of every 100 heifers and 2 of every 100 adult cows will need assistance. Being prepared to pull a calf is important. Hanzlicek said producers should have the following items on hand: • Clean straps or chains • OB sleeves • Lube • Working calf pullers • Veterinarian’s phone number Intervening at an appropriate time is important. “If we intervene too early and the cow or heifer is not dilated, we can injure the tissues and hurt the calf,” Hanzlicek said. “If we intervene too late, a lot of times that’s when we end up with stillborn calves.” According to Hanzlicek, once a cow has reached the second stage of labor, they should give birth within 30 minutes. A heifer should calve within an hour. Second stage labor is when the heifer or cow can be observed experiencing uterine contractions, or the water bag or calf ’s feet are visible. If assistance from the producer is needed, and they are unable to extract the calf within 15 minutes, then help—either a veterinarian or someone with more experience—should be called. Following calving, the calf should be up and nursing within two hours, Hanzlicek says. If not, a colostrum replacer can be given to help get the calf started. “Colostrum-based powders are the best way to go, and I would recommend that every producer have one or two bags of powder replacer on hand during the calving season,” Hanzlicek says.

Cattle Markets Poised To Strengthen by Wes Ishmael

M

ore fed cattle and beef production than previously expected capped historically high cattle prices for much of the third quarter. Weakness began with more feedlot placements than expected beginning in September as producers moved cattle earlier, either forced by lingering drought or taking advantage of relative price strength. More feeder cattle were also imported from Mexico as producers there responded to drought and prices.

50

For perspective, increased feedlot placements added about 200,000 head to feedlot inventories in October and November, according to Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University in his late-November market comments. However, he emphasized the surge mainly represented feedlots pulling cattle forward. “Increased placements now will be offset by reduced placements later,” Peel said at the time. “Total placements in the last six months,

• JANUARY 2024

built on the recent increase and representing the majority of cattle on feed, are at the highest percentage of July 1 feeder supplies since 2011. This means that a larger percentage of available feeder supplies have already been placed in feedlots compared to recent years. Feedlot numbers will inevitably come down in the coming months, especially when heifer retention begins.” USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) underscored the impact, boosting projected 2023 beef production by 535 million pounds (+2.1%) to 25.8 billion pounds, in the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE). The forecast increase was based on more expected steer and heifer placements—ultimate marketings— for the remainder of last year and the first part of 2024. At the same time, beef packers slowed production to firm wholesale beef values. ERS reduced the expected five-area direct fed steer price for the remainder of 2023 and 2024, in the December WASDE. Based on increased expected feedlot placements in late 2023 that will be marketed in 2024, and current prices compared to the previous month, ERS reduced the expected 2023 fourth-quarter price by $7 to $178/ cwt. The projected annual price was forecast $1.75 lower at $175.55. For this year, prices were sliced by $10 in the first quarter to $175, $9 in the second quarter to $184 and $5 in the third quarter to $177. The forecast annual average price for 2024 was reduced $7 to $178.

Incidentally, ERS left the expected season-average 2023-24 corn price received by producers unchanged at $4.85 per bushel. As for feeder cattle, ERS reduced the expected fourth-quarter feeder steer price (750-800 lbs., Oklahoma City) for 2023 by $10 to $230/ cwt. and the annual average price by $2.50 to $218.61, in December’s Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook. For 2024, projected prices were forecast $15 lower in the first quarter at $225, $12 lower in the second at $235 and $10 lower in the third at $250. The 2024 annual average price was reduced $10.50 to $241.75. “Estimated steer and heifer slaughter was slower than expected in November and early December, suggesting a slower pace of marketings for the month and lowering expectations for the quarter,” ERS analysts said. “On the other hand, placements of cattle were above a year ago for the month of October, and November.” They noted less heifer retention was likely supporting heavier placements. Projections for increasing feeder cattle prices in the second half of this are based in part on fewer cattle available as time unfolds.

Herd Expansion Remains Stalled

Although historically high, cattle prices have yet to yield enough profit to trigger national herd expansion, according to James Mitchell, continued on page 52

Consumer Beef Demand Wobbles

TRUSTWORTHY

Depending on who’s running the pencil, domestic consumer beef demand continues to be extraordinarily resilient amid historically high retail prices. With that said, the inability of wholesale Choice beef prices to budge much seasonally suggests inflation and higher interest rates could be applying some drag. “The demand index for beef appears to be resetting closer to pre-pandemic levels but may lose further ground as price increases are expected to continue in the next few years,” say analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center in the Livestock Monitor. LMIC’s demand index for all fresh beef was 115 in the second quarter of 2023, slightly higher than 111 in 2019, but lower than 2020-22. LMIC analysts note a similar trend for the third quarter with an index value of 110. That was in line with the same time in 2014 but has declined every year since 2020. At the same time, reduced domestic beef production and high prices are challenging international consumers of U.S. beef. Although stronger than the previous month, U.S. beef exports continued lower year-over-year in October, according to data

released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Beef exports totaled 104,446 metric tons (mt) in October, down 17% from a year earlier but 6% more than the low volume posted in September. Export value was $836 million, down 11% yearover-year but 5% higher than September. Beef export value equated to $389.90 per head of fed slaughter in October, down 9% from a year ago. “Economic headwinds in our largest Asian markets continue to weigh on demand, as consumers trade down to lower-priced proteins,” says Dan Halstrom, USMEF President and CEO. “The recovery in Asia’s foodservice sector has been limited, but we remain hopeful that it will accelerate in 2024. Recent efforts to jump-start economic activity in these countries and address weakened currencies could also improve the business climate.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Wes Ishmael has been involved with livestock publications since 1983. Focus On Making Your Succession Plan Fair, Not Equal by Cheyenne Kramer

W

hen it comes to succession planning, Travis Shuring, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, wants to make sure families are protected. This is something he does by helping put the proper plan in place, but also making sure expectations are accurate for everyone involved. “The first thing I remind clients is that when we look at your legacy, fair is not always equal,” Shuring says. According to Shuring, what might be considered equal doesn’t always make sense when the succession plan involves family members who actively work on the farm and others who do not. “One of the things I do is have a discussion about what you’d like to do for the other siblings,” he says. “Maybe other assets are available we can supplement with and split to make fair. Maybe we have an insurance policy that only names the siblings and children who are not part of the current ag production, and they receive those assets. Those active on the farm can receive the farm assets.” Planning for those other assets is an important part of the legacy plan and something that should be considered sooner rather than later. “The sooner we get something started, the more time we have for it to work,” Shuring says. “It’s less about timing the markets and more about time in the market.”

Planning for the Right Assets

One of the biggest assets Shuring works to build into a legacy plan is life insurance. More importantly, the right kind of life insurance.

“People go get life insurance and I ask them why they have this type of life insurance and they can’t tell me,” he says. “I want them to know why they have an investment, why they have life insurance and why they have an estate plan. And do you have the right kind and amount of insurance?” Along with life insurance, he encourages families to consider disability insurance, or setting aside funds to use as a sort of disability insurance. “Life insurance is great, but life insurance is not about you—it’s about your family. However, in the event you become disabled, hurt or can’t work on the farm, the life insurance hasn’t kicked in and we have to have a plan in place,” Shuring says. “Maybe we can’t supplement to the point that a disability policy or supplemental insurance might provide, but we can still have funds that are reserved and we’re hoping not to have to use.”

Four Tips for Building the Plan

Shuring’s advice for building your legacy plan begins with having spouses present in the process from the start. But his next recommendation is not waiting too long to bring children into the conversation. “Don’t be afraid to bring your children into the discussion,” he says. “Make sure they understand your plan and your desires and what you want to happen when that time comes.” As the process moves along, it can get complicated. That’s why he also advises relying on more than one expert. “I always encourage folks to have a robust team in place. Talk to the tax pros and include estate attorneys,” Shuring says. “They understand the law and they understand what changes may be coming down the line when it comes to the law.” Once your plan is in place, don’t neglect keeping it up to date. Shuring suggests reviewing your wills and trusts no less than every five years.

Anaplasmosis: An Ongoing Battle

B

Cattle that recover become carriers for life.

by Rosslyn Biggs, DVM, Oklahoma State Extension

ovine anaplasmosis is caused by the rickettsial bacteria, Anaplasma marginale. It invades the red blood cells leading to early signs such as fever, anemia, pale mucous membranes, weakness and loss of appetite. As the disease progresses, excitement, jaundice, incoordination and death may be seen. Abortions and retained placentas may also increase. It typically takes four to eight weeks following the date of infection for signs to become evident. Signs are most severe in animals greater than two years of age although cattle may be infected at any age. Cattle that recover from initial infection become carriers for life. Carrier animals typically do not show clinical signs and serve as a source of infection for unexposed cattle. However, carrier animals under times of significant stress, such as pregnancy, can revert to exhibiting clinical signs. Transmission primarily occurs through ticks and biting flies. Wildlife with infected ticks can also play a role in spreading the disease as they travel, transporting the ticks with them. Infected cows may also transmit the agent to their unborn calves. Equipment contaminated with infected blood, such as injection needles used on multiple animals is another common mechanism to transmit the

LOPE ON OVER

bacteria. Diagnosis is through blood testing. Oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline are approved for control of the agent and enrofloxacin is labeled to treat initial infections in certain classes of beef cattle. Other supportive treatments may also be needed. There are currently no approved antimicrobials in the U.S. labeled to eliminate the anaplasmosis carrier status. With limited options to address the disease, pharmaceutical stewardship must be considered when reaching for antimicrobials used in the treatment and control of anaplasmosis to maintain long term effectiveness. There are currently no commercially available USDA approved vaccines. In some states, conditionally approved vaccines may be obtained. These vaccines may prevent anaplasmosis related deaths but do not prevent infected cattle from becoming carriers and are not protective against all strains. Determining herd anaplasmosis status is important to developing an approach. Testing of new introductions prior to purchase or turnout is also recommended especially if animals are sourced from areas not known to be endemic for anaplasmosis. Other biosecurity measures include maintaining a closed herd and preventing reuse of contaminated equipment during processing. Producers should consult with their veterinarian regarding the best approach for treatment and

he question asked: “As a no-till corn and soybean farmer, at what depth should I pull soil samples for nutrient evaluation?” In this case, the grower, who has been no-tilling for upwards of 10 years, says he wants to evaluate phosphorus, potassium and pH levels in fields. “I would still recommend a six-and-two-thirds-inch sample depth, but that’s without knowing what your fertilizer applications were in the past 10 years of no-tilling and what your fertility levels were before you started no-tilling,” replies Ferrie, Farm Journal Field Agronomist and owner of Crop-Tech Consulting, Heyworth, Illinois. “I’d recommend you pull some stratification tests as well.” Ferrie recommends carefully splitting the sample (core of dirt) and placing it in two different buckets for testing. The reason is after 10 years of no-till, the top three inches of the sample will likely be considerably higher in nutrient levels than the bottom three inches. “This is due to stratification that comes from all the crops that have decomposed at the surface as well as broadcast fertilizers over the past 10 years,” Ferrie says “High levels of fertility in the top three inches is not a concern, but ultra-low levels in the bottom three inches is. the bottom three inches are deficient in nutrients, that means it was probably that way when you started no-tilling,” he adds.

inches,” Ferrie says. “Once you’ve brought your bottom three inches into range, you can go back to no-till.”

Drought Can Impact Nutrient Availability

Consider pH Levels

Ferrie says in fields his team routinely samples, they don’t see a lot of movement in the lower three inches of a soil sample (core) in no-till growers’ fields after decades of no-tilling. He adds that if the grower finds deficient fertility levels in the bottom three inches of the sample, he probably needs to address it. “Ninety percent of the P and K we pick up comes out of the top six inches where the microbial activities are at. But if the top three inches get in trouble in a drought, like this year, your plants will need to feed on those lower three inches,” he says. To weatherproof the soil, it would likely be best to fix the fertility in the lower three inches. “This could be done by knifing some fertility down there or adding some tillage and mixing the top three inches with the bottom three

He adds that no-till farmers also need to pay attention to soil pH. “This is an area where farmers get in trouble when they go into notill and keep applying lime like they did when they were in tillage, using (those) three- and four-ton rates,” he says. Ferrie advises farmers to treat limestone like they do P and K. “If you have made big lime applications (in no-till), you’ll probably find your surface pH is too high. I have seen surface pH in the mid sevens. This causes issues with nutrient tie-up, herbicide carryover and damage, and also nutrient and nitrogen volatility,” Ferrie says. “With stratification pH issues, the only option is to mix that soil, which can be a tricky step in highly erodible ground.

I

by Alison Jones NALF Director of DNA Processing & Accounting Operations

hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It seems like every year time passes faster and faster, and ready or not, bull sale season is right around the corner! It is without a doubt one of my favorite times of the year. I always look forward to going to my mailbox and thumbing through the incredible genetics being offered that get better and better each year. I hope to make it out to a few sales this year, so I look forward to seeing some of you this spring. A question I am often asked about is contemporary groups. A contemporary group refers to a set of animals that are the same sex and managed under the same environmental conditions and feed resources. These animals, when compared to each other, have been given an equal opportunity to perform. Contemporary groups are the best way to account for environmental effects. The remaining differences among animals in contemporary groups can be attributed to the diversity of genetics. Contemporary grouping plays an important role in the calculation of expected progeny differences (EPDs).

The Digital Beef registry platform makes it easy to separate calves into contemporary groups. When you go to register animals online in your birth queue, there is a spot to designate numerical contemporary groups with a management code. If animals were managed differently than others being registered in the same queue, designating them with a different management code will split them into a separate contemporary group. Though Digital Beef is a helpful tool, it is your responsibility as a breeder to make sure your contemporary groups are split correctly. If you have questions as to why specific animals have been split a specific way, give me a call. We can always edit contemporary groups to fit the needs of your herd. Calves are automatically split into contemporary groups by sex during birth recording. In most cases, contemporary groups by sex are adequate, unless different management protocols on your specific continued on page 64

operation require the need for two or more groups. For example, natural service and AI calves will always be grouped together, but embryo transfer calves will be in their own contemporary group. Calves that are twins will also always be in separate groups. Additionally, calves born to first-calf heifers will be split into their own group as well. Calves need to be born within a 90-day window in order to stay in the same contemporary group. So, calves born from January 1 through March 31 will be grouped together, but April born calves will form a new group. The birth recording queue in Digital Beef has a season code. Make sure all calves in the same contemporary group have the same season code (A for the first 90 days of the year). You will see the colors change in your birth queue depending on which season calves are classified into. If the queue is all the same color, they are all in the same season. It is important to keep in mind that the contemporary group assigned to the calf at birth will stay with it through weaning and yearling. When recording weaning weights, make sure to note when a calf is managed differently than the others. An orphan or sick calf will require a separate group, as well as calves that were creep fed in addition to their dams. In the Digital Beef weaning queue screen, there is a Feed dropdown menu to accommodate different management practices within the weaning group. Animals weaned within three days of each other will stay in the same contemporary group, but a new one will be generated outside of the three-day window. Some additional considerations to keep in mind are that two or more animals of the same sex are required to form a contemporary group in order for the EPD to be calculated. The more animals in a contemporary group, the more useful the data. Within a contemporary group, ratios are calculated for each calf. A ratio is defined as the performance of a single animal relative to the average performance of the other animals in the contemporary group (weaned at the same time, same sex, fed and managed the same). For example: you have a group of 10 heifers, weighing an average of 600 lbs. at weaning. Heifer A weighs 625 pounds, and heifer B weighs 550 pounds. To calculate the ratio of each calf, you would divide each heifer’s individual weight into 600 (the average weight of the group) and multiply by 100. So heifer A ratios a 104, and heifer B ratios a 91. Ratios can be a useful tool when utilized within the group, but individual data measurements will be used in calculation of the EPD itself. Yet another reason why accurate, non-biased data collection is essential in the evaluation of the performance of the entire herd. At the end of the day, we as breeders invest so many resources into our cattle, and NALF wants to make sure you are getting the most out of your dollars spent by accurately representing your herd by providing you with tools to help you succeed. I encourage you to reach out to the office if you have questions or come find me at a sale or event.

JUNIOR SCENE by Lily Mitchell NALJA director

“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.”

O

ne of my most recent adventures in life is adjusting to moving away from home and going to college. This is an exciting yet scary time for most people. This adventure came with so many new responsibilities and freedom. There is no longer someone there to tell me what to do and push me in the right direction. It was quite the adjustment having to be the person to push myself to try new things I would not normally do. However, this change has also been one of the greatest things for me. I learned what I am capable of doing and I can slowly work more towards being the person I want to be.

2023-2024 NALJA BOARD

PRESIDENT, Landry Kleman.............................................Nazareth, TX ltkleman@hotmail.com

Sometimes I think we tend to look at change as something scary or that we don’t want. If we give it a chance, we can see how good it can really be for us. We may like the old because it was working, and it gives us a certain level of comfort. Although we may like that comfort, I try to remember this quote by John D. Rockefeller, “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” We don’t know the possibilities of what could happen if we look at change as something scary. The cattle industry is a prime example of change for the better. It is an industry that is always changing and improving to meet consumer needs. As cattle producers we are always striving to improve our cattle herds to have the best and most profitable animals. Why should we settle for anything less than that in our personal lives? We shouldn’t be afraid of change and rather, embrace the improvements it can make in our lives.
