THE CALCIID Limestone College Gaffney, South Carolina

1982, Volume 70

TOWARD

THE LIGHT

2

When we began this new year at Limestone College. we wanted a new look. a new organization. and a new attitude with which to reflect the changes the college is experiencing. Indeed. in the words of our Alma Mater: "The hours of life flow swiftly. and change must come to all." So as we face the 80'5. a Decade of Confidence, we all share a hope for the future-the hope that comes o f refusing to change for the sake of change. but rather for progress. To rephrase Robert Frost. Limestone College has "Much to look backward to with pride. and much to look forward to with hope. .. As Marcus Aurelius notes. "Our life Is what our thoughts make It. So here-as a labor o f lo ve from our heads. hearts, and hands-we. the 1982 staff, present the Calc lid: a symbol of successful activity. a symbol reawakening In all the spirit of the old Limestone and awakening in all the spirit of the new Limestone. Along with the new look. the new organization. and the new attitude. we kept some of the old to make It seem like home. We present the 1982 Calciid. a symbol of the Limestone ideal of love and service in our quest "Toward the Light... II

TRADITIONS From commencement to quarry burning, from Homecoming to May Day, traditlonsa vital part of any c ollege-give us at Limestone a sense of unify and pride, of purpose and continuity. Continuing a tradition, a freshman became the third generation of her family to offend Limestone College. "adiflons Offen as flmes chang~ become modified. For many years Dr. Montague McMillan's reading of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" was an annual holiday event. Although Dr. Mac no longer presents this reading, students carry on the spirit of this tradition b y singing carols on front campus. Some "aditlons do not vary. Whether you are a freshman, just celebraflng a birthday, undergoing an init/aflon, or simply cooling off-being thro wn Into the fountain Is a tradition that will last as long as there is water.

Dr. Montague McMillan

6/ Dedication

A Symbol of

Success Our symbol of success is one of the most admired and respected teachers at Limestone College. In dedicating the 1982 Calc lid to her, we collected thoughts from various sources. A senior summed up her feelings on " May June" this way: "She's a very effective teacher, interested in helping students understand the English language and literature and app l y their knowledge. " Another student, looking o ver Miss Foster's vocabulary list, found the word "bovine" and remarked, "She 's always the height of fashIon and would never be caught looking bovine. " "She's very hard, b ut I've learned more English under her in the two months I've been In her c lass than I learned the entire time I was In high school, " stated one freshman. And that's not hickey. "Dear Gussie!" replied one of her c olleagues. "Although our teachIng methods may vary, she is one of the most dedicated and conscientious Individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. " And so, with respect, admiration, and gratitude, we the Senior Class dedicate the 1982 Calciid to a successful teacher, Miss June Foster.

ANEW LOOK . A NEW ORGANIZATION-L YFE

Among the changes we had to adjust to as we began the fall semesfer-reQlstratlon lines, school cooking, roommate dlsaQreements- we found an exciting new campus look. The construction of the out-of-doors L YFE (Limestone ColleQe YMCA Fitness Education) Center gave our campus a new look. Construction began In Spetember 1981. The out-o/doors /acllity wIll provide elQht "Qhted tennis courts, a soccer field, a jogging track, two softball fields, and other outdoor facilities. The facility addition to the Tlmken Building will Include an auxiliary QymnasJ. um, an adult fitness c enter, racquetball and hand ball courts, a modern dance studio, and office space. The goal of this project, the first priority 0/ the Decade of Confidence, Is to develop a jolnlly used recreational and a thletic facility that expresses the strong commitment 0/ the College and the YMCA to our students a nd our community.

A NEW ATTITUDE Service Is one of the Ideals of our motto, "Toward the Light." Whether If be working with the Red Cross blood drive, the Arts Council, the Music Academy, the Kings Mountain drama, the Girl Scouts, or with public school students-Limestone students and faculty are proud to serve the community.

The saying " There 's no place like home " comes to mind as we enter our ne w homes-the dorms. A transformation Is evident as we c hange small cubicles Into places encompassing all the comforts 01 home. Stereos, posters, refrigerators, televisions, lamps, pillows, plants, baskets, pictures, and couches are used to improve the atmosphere of a strange p lace-a place which soon develops character and personality.

CAFETERIA STAFF: Judy Harrill, Milton Richardson, Cynthia Robbs, Dennis Farr, Henry Jones, Richard Gooding, Ethelene Davidson, Robert Davis, Ansle Rainey, David Johnson, and Jessie Brown.

You can get anything you want at Henry's Hard Rock Cafe-as long as if's Tuna Casserole. Now you've learned really to appreciate a good homecooked meal. And you have the Limestone cafeteria to thank. Actually, Epicure food is not all that bad. People keep coming back for it semester after semester. If worse comes to worse, there's always the salad bar. Anyway, people don't go to Stephenson primarily to eat. Where else can you "casually" bump Into that hot freshman or meet your gang? All In 0/1, the cafeteria isn't that bad. Henry is a nice guy, and he can layout a spread for a party. But Sunday lunches are especially nice-since we get to share them with Gaffnoids.

OUf

Indispensable Friends

MAIDS: Vernelle Hogue, Anna Jenkins, Lorene Houey, Margaret Tate, Wilma Lindsay, Thelma Jeffries, Nellie Hardy, Mary Frances Byars

On Monday mornings our campus maids arrive to find floors sticky with beer spills and trash cans piled high with empty pizza boxes. They marvel at how one group of people can make such a mess from Friday afternoon to Sunday night. And so, at 8:00 a.m., they set about sweeping, pick ing up, cleaning, and trying to make some order out of the mess. Even though they will venture in to clean the bath, that disaster area known as your room is up to you to clean. Do we hear any complaints from these saints? No. All our maids do Is shake their heads and wonder just how bad next Monday will be. And by the way, if you ever need a smile, the maids are sure to have one for you.

Senior Music Recitals A degree in Music Education or Music Performance involves a great deal o f discipline, determination, and e xpertise. Whether through composing, directing, teaching, or performing, a musician must channel his energies carefully into the task of developing not only his musical knowledge, but that of others as we ll. This task of developing musical knowledge is accomplished only if there is a deep love for music. Ivo Pogorellch says that music Is " . . . a profession, a craft, and an art. In some artists you will find more Intulflon, less craft. In other art· ists more craft, less senslflvity, When the combination happens, then it's wonderful. "

As this the 1981-82 edition of the Calciid c omes to a close, I must ad mit that putting out a yearbook has definitely been a learning exper· lence which I shall never forget. There were both ups and downs, but due to a dedicated staff and a dedicated advisor there were many more ups than downs. , appreciate the following people: Dr. Bernard Zaldman, who stood by us and provIded the literary expertise necessary for a publication of this calibre; Bryan K. Stewart, who served as both Co-Editor and Layout Editor; and Bobby Holcombe, who came in as a rookIe but finished as a real professional. My thanks also go to all other Calciid staff members, faculty, staff, and administration who coop erated by providing assistance when asked; to Lisa Kling, DavId Green, Barbie Russ, and John Rountree for contributing photos which were used in the book; and to Hannah Dillard and Tya Evatt, both of whom designed the outstanding cover. I hope thIs book brings you much joy and provides those memories which can be captured only in pictures. I also hope you keep up the good work, get behind your editor next year, and continue to make the Calciid bigger and better.
