Mozart & Strauss

We look forward to welcoming back Jörg Widmann for Mozart & Strauss at UCH in September. The ICO emerge from darkness into light with Mozart’s C Fugue. The healing Adagio reminiscent of a French overture is filled with bold, expressive progressions whilst the Fugue, rolls on relentlessly to its close. Richard Strauss’s post-war masterpiece Metamorphosen is seen as an impassioned heart cry for the death of German culture. The title was inspired by Goethe’s essay On the Metamorphosis of Plants, and his ravishing composition evokes themes of rebirth, growth and transformation. There are strong parallels to the music as we emerge from the trauma of Covid with a huge sense of renewal and hope. See www.irishchamberorchstra.com for concert details in due course.
Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021
As orchestra-in-residence at Kilkenny, the ICO is excited and delighted to collaborate this year with the amazing traditional singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh in Róisín Re-imagined. Sean Nós singing is enjoying a revival. Kilkenny Arts Festival and the Irish Chamber Orchestra have co-commissioned special arrangements from six leading Irish composers including Cormac McCarthy, Paul Campbell, Linda Buckley, Sam Perkin, Niamh Varian-Barry and Michael Keeney. Produced by Dónal O’Connor, Roisin Reimagined explores the connections between classical and traditional music, reimagining these timeless songs for a new era. We hope this online performance stimulates new interest in the Classical Sean Nós repertoire. It will be streamed from 13 August for a limited period.

Why now is the time for Limerick businesses to embrace transformation

81% of Irish CEOs say their organisation will start a new and comprehensive transformation initiative this year, according to the new EY Ireland CEO Imperative Study 2021. Nationally, more than half of Irish companies say that the pandemic accelerated their transformation agendas and just 16% said it had slowed it, reflecting the greater focus being placed on transformation by Irish companies with an acceleration being seen as a natural response to the pandemic. Undoubtedly the recent environment has presented challenges never seen before; however, despite this Limerick businesses have shown adaptability and resilience, as indicated in our latest EY Limerick Economic Monitor. As our region emerges from the pandemic there are many green shoots for the local economy, with significant jobs announcements and a strong level of start-up activity that point to a renewed energy for the region. There is therefore every expectation that Limerick businesses will follow the national trend of accelerating transformation within their businesses. We live in a world where leading global accommodation providers don’t own property and where transport companies don’t need to own vehicles, so it is no surprise that 88% of Irish CEOs believe products and services will need to adapt to the context in which they are used. Over the last year in Limerick, we saw countless examples of local businesses that transformed rapidly over the course of the pandemic to offer different services and products adapting to meet changing customer demands. Businesses across the board that are seeing the greatest success with transformation are those where programmes are focused on changing customer expectations and transforming the customer experience. This is something we anticipate will continue as we continue to progress towards our new reality. However, we’re seeing more and more that transformation programmes are going beyond products and services. Transformation programmes are being undertaken across a range of sectors and company sizes that change how businesses operate at a fundamental level, focusing on decision-making as a core outcome, allowing them to become more proactive in the market. How can data be leveraged to understand our customers better? How can we forecast sales more effectively using technology? 65% of CEOs surveyed said that leading transformation programmes with purpose and empathy was an important trend that is getting more focus this year. Indeed, it is cited as a key success factor for CEOs. Empathy means understanding the needs of your customers and your employees and purpose is staying true to what you stand for. An even higher number (91%) of Irish CEOs say empathy and purpose will come to the fore as key management capabilities in future. Those capabilities will be critically important when it comes to driving a transformative mindset within organisations. Transformation is now firmly top of the agenda for Irish CEOs. This will see businesses reshape products and services to meet changing customer expectations and retool their decision-making processes to adapt to rapidly shifting market conditions. The winning businesses in the post-Covid world will be those with an embedded transformation mindset and the successful CEOs will have the ability to lead with empathy and purpose.
