Accreditations&awards

InFebruary2018,theLimbeWildlifeCentrehaditsaccreditationwith thePanAfricanSanctuaryAlliance(PASA)renewedforanotherfive years.PASAisthelargestassociationofwildlifecentresandsanctuaries inAfrica,foundedbytheLimbeWildlifeCentre,alongwith6other primatesanctuaries.Today,PASAincludes23organisationsin13 countriesthatdemonstrateexceptionalcommitmentandthehighest standardsofanimalwelfareandconservationpractices,tosecuringafutureforAfrica’s primatesandtheirhabitat.

InApril2018,theLimbeWildlifeCentrewasvotedBestVolunteer AbroadProjectandchosentofeatureinTutorful’sWildlifeConservation editorialalongwithotherprestigiousorganisationsmakinganotable differenceinwildlifeconservationworldwide.TheLWCgivespeople thechancetovolunteerandassistexperiencedcaregiverswithdaily caregivingactivities,offeringtheopportunityforvolunteerstoexperiencemakinga meaningfulcontributiontoprimateconservation(andallthesatisfactionthisprovides).

InAugust2019,theLimbeWildlifeCentrereceiveda2019ClarkR. BavinWildlifeLawEnforcementAwardattheConferenceoftheParties oftheConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesof WildFaunaandFlora(CITES)inGeneva,Switzerland,inrecognitionof theremarkableeffortstheLWChasmadetohelpcombatwildlife crime.

Dearfriendsandsupporters, WelcomeonceagaintotheLimbe WildlifeCentre(LWC)quarterlyreport. Thishasbeenaperiodofwelcoming peopleintoourLWCfamily,andassuch, aparticularlyexcitingtimelooking towardsourimmediatefuture.

Augustsawthearrivalofbothanew Conservator,thegovernment representativeatLWC,andanew AnimalCareManagerforPandrillus.

DrHansEttagbormovedherefromthe BakossiNationalParkhavingalready collaboratedwithusbybeingresponsible fortherescueandtransfertoLWCoflittle babychimpanzeeBakossiinearlyApril. Thatwasawonderfulinterventionand hasresultedinasecondchanceatlifefor Bakossi,whoisnowahappy,healthy, andcheekyinfant,keepingherexpert lovingcaregiversverybusyinourspecial caresection.

Welookforwardwithgreatoptimismto workingwithDrHans,whoclearlyhas passionandunderstandingforanimal careandconservation,andagreat breadthofknowledge.

Wearealsodelightedtowelcome

JonathanStarkasournewanimalcare manager.Hemovesherewithawealth ofexperiencefromJerseyZoo,whichis partoftherenownedDurrellWildlife ConservationTrust.Youcanreadmore onJonathanbelow.Providingthevery bestanimalcareistheverycoreofwhat LWCisabout,andJonathanisalready throwinghimselfintohisnewrolewith greatenergyandcommitmentto

improvethewellbeingofourspecial creatures.

Finally,wewerefortunatetowelcome AsuquoNsa,anextremelyexperienced drillkeeperfromoursisteroperationin Nigeria,DrillRanch,fora3-month exchangeprogramme.Thisisthefirstof whatwehopewillberegularexchanges andcollaborationstooptimisethe knowledgeandexperienceavailableat thetwoPandrillusoperations.Asuquo madeanexcellentimpressionwithallof us,andourkeeperstestifiedtohowmuch theylearntfromhimandenjoyedhis greatexperienceandgenerosityofspirit. Inreturn,wehopehetooksomeuseful knowledgebackwithhim,andhewas delightedtohavethechancetowork withourcharismaticgorillas.Wewere verysadtoseehimgoandwould welcomehimbackanytime.

Theworktorefreshtheoveralllookofthe LWCsite,trailsandeducationhall continues,especiallyhowitcanbetter beusedtoinspireandeducatevisitors aboutwildlifeandconservationissues. Thisquarter,wecelebratedthe completionofawonderfulnewmural depictingthewildlifeandhabitatsofthis region,fromsummittosea.Itreallyis beautifulandmakesabigdifferenceto ourentrancehallway–hugethanksto theartistsandsponsors,pleasesee photosandfulldetailsinthespecial sectionbelow.Pleasedocomealongto visit,admire,andbeinspiredbyit.

TheGreenProjectcontinuesstrongly;in Julyweheldanannualworkshopwithall thoseinvolvedfromtheBatoke community.Featuringtalksand

presentations,itwasahighlyconstructive exchangeoffeedbackandideasonthe projectandhowtoensurethatit continuestosupplythebestgreen browsetoouranimals,whilehelpingto supportthelocalwildlifeandcommunity asbestaspossible.Itwasanincredibly inspiringevent,andextremelysatisfying toseenotonlythelargeattendancebut alsotheoverwhelmingsupportand gratitudefromtheBatokecommunityfor theeffortsofLWCandourgenerous sponsors.

ThequartersawLWC,alongwithseveral otherAfricansanctuaries,winfundingfor asignificantzoonosesresearchand awarenessproject.Thiswillstartduring 2023andwillbeagreatopportunityto helpusshareimportantinformation aboutzoonoticdiseases(thosewhich canbetransmittedbetweenhumans andanimals),thebushmeatandpet trades,andtheOneHealthapproach (whichaddressestheinterconnection betweenpeople,animalsand ecosystemsandworkstoachieve optimalhealthoutcomesforallonlocal, nationalandgloballevels),with communitiesandorganisationsin Cameroon.Itissuchanimportanttopic, encompassingdiseasessuchas tuberculosis,COVIDandEbola,anda goodopportunitytoutilisetheexpertise weareluckytohaveinourvet,

education,andcommunicationteams. Abigthankyoutolong-termsupporters Pro-Wildlifefortheirdeterminedeffortsto makethisprojecthappen.

Nowwewelcomethedryseason,and theopportunitytostepupallourworkin thefieldwhichitrepresents.Our constructionteamhasnonetheless managedtostayincrediblyindustrious throughouttherains,havingcompleted thisquarteralovelyextensiontoour putty-nosedmonkeyenclosure.This shouldgreatlyimproveharmonyinthe group,withthenewsectionlinkedby tunneltothemainenclosure.Thiswas possiblethankstothemuch-appreciated supportofourgenerousfunders.

AsthewetseasonendedtheLWCfelta veryoptimisticplacetobe,withamazing animals,people,andplansinplace,and aboveall,withfantasticsupporterslike you.

Ourpriorityfinancialneeds

HelpuscontinuetoprotectourrescuedanimalsduringCOVID-19!

Whenthepandemicbegan,wechosetoprovideadditionalsupplementstoour primatestoboosttheirimmunesystems.ThethreatfromCOVID-19remains,andtherefore wecontinuetoprovideadditionalprotein-richandnutrient-richfoods,suchasrice, beans,soyacake,multivitamins,minerals,codliveroilandmedicinalplants.Byboosting theimmunesystemofourvulnerablerescueanimals,theywillbebetterequippedtofight offtheclinicalsymptomsofnotjustCOVID-19butotherviralinfections.Thiswillalso enableustoputourenergyintoisolatingandprovidingspecialcaretoourmore vulnerableindividualsifeveranoutbreakshouldhappen.

Wemadethedifficultbutnecessarydecisiontocloseourgatestovisitorsandvolunteers toprotectouranimalsduringtheworstofthepandemic.ThismeanttheLWClosta considerableportionofincomewhilstthecentresoperationalcostsrose.TheLWCisstill recoveringfromthefinancialimpactofthepandemic,yetwemustcontinuetoboost theimmunityofour14criticallyendangeredgorillas,41endangeredchimps,and66 endangereddrillsandotherrescueanimals.Bydonatingtoday,youwillhelpusto maintainbiosecuritymeasuresandprotectouranimalsagainstCOVID-19!

Alltheseprecautionarymeasuresareessentialtoprotectourrescueprimates,yet theycontinuetoputdailyfinancialpressureonthewildlifecentre.Youcanhelpus toprotectthemifyoudonatenow!

Thirdquarterhighlights

TheLWCwaspleasedtowelcomea newconservator,DrEttagborHans, whoistherepresentativeoftheMinistry ofForestryandWildlifeattheLimbe WildlifeCentre.

AnewAnimalCareManagerhas joinedourteam!JohnathanStarkfrom theUKbringswithhimlotsofanimal careexperienceandplentyof enthusiasmabouttheLWC’sproject. ReadmoreaboutJonathanbelow!

Afterfundingsupportfromour generousdonors,ourconstruction teamcompletedourmuch-needed extensionofourputty-nosedmonkey enclosuretoreducetensionsinthe group.

InJulytheLWCwelcomedAsuquoNsafromNigeria.AsuquoworksattheAfiMountain SanctuaryinNigeria,partofPandrillus’sisterorganisation,DrillRanch.Asuquobeganhis workatDrillRanchin2007,andaftermanyyearsAsuquoishighlyknowledgeableabout thecare,needsandbehavioursofendangereddrillmonkeys.

InJuly2022,hetravelledtoCameroontoassistatLimbeWildlifeCentreandshare expertisewithhisCamerooniancolleagues.ItisalsoanopportunityforAsuquotolearn fromtheLWCdrillkeepers–Alvin,EliasandSimon.Asuquoisworkingalongsidehisfellow drillkeeperstocareforLWC’sgroupof68drillsandadvisingonimprovementsto enclosurefurnishings,drillfeedingandrecordkeeping.Healsoassistedintroducingnew drillstothegroup,suchasMalika,ajuvenilefemalewhowasrescuedfromtheillegal wildlifetradeinlate2021(readmoreaboutMalika’sstorybelow!).

CompletionofArt4Naturemuralbylocalartist TohBright

TohBright,alongwiththehelpofartistsBorisGobinaandMangaLuluWilliams,has createdabeautifulmuralshowcasingthewildlifeintheCrossRiver-Sanagaregion.The muralissituatedattheentranceoftheLimbeWildlifeCentre.Themuraltakesusona journeyfromtheoceantothetopofMountCameroon,showinguniqueand endangeredspeciessuchastheAfricanmanatee,goliathfrog,drillmonkeyandwestern lowlandgorilla.Themuralnowservesasnotonlyabeautifulpieceofartworkbutalsoan educationaltool.Sinceitscompletion,oureducationteamhaveusedtheartworkto explaintovisitorsaboutCameroon’swildlife.Manyvisitorsalsouseittotakephotographs, whicharesharedonsocialmediaandthusraisingtheprofileoftheLimbeWildlifeCentre tonewaudiences.

WeareextremelygratefultotheCultureandAnimalsFoundation,withoutwhomwe wouldnothavethisfantasticmuralbrighteninguptheentrancetotheLWC.Wewould liketosayanenormousthankyouforfundingthisproject.

MeetournewAnimalCareManager

Wearepleasedtoannouncethatwehaveanewmemberofourteam–JonathanStark. JonathanwillbejoiningusasthenewAnimalCareManager.Hebringswithhimmany yearsofanimalcareexperience,including12yearsasagorillakeeperatJerseyZoo, whichisoperatedbytheDurrellWildlifeConservationTrust,aninternationallyfamous conservationorganisation.Jonathanalsohasplentyofexperienceworkingwith communitiesinAfricaafterco-foundingtheKafunjoCommunityProjectinUganda.

WeareveryexcitedtowelcomeJonathantoourteam.Jonathan’smainrolewillinclude closecollaborationwiththemanagement,animalcareandveterinaryteamstoensure thehealth,welfareandnutritionoftheanimalsundertheLWC’scare.

Inthethirdquarterof2022,therewasa1%increaseinfollowersacrossallourplatforms (Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,andYouTube),showingasteadyincreaseinpeople receivingourconservationmessageallovertheworld.Wegained552newfollowers acrossoursocialmediasites,showingthatwearecontinuingtoexperiencegrowthand awiderglobalaudiencetoshareourconservationmessagewith.

Visitornumbers

WehavebeenwelcomingvisitorsbackattheLWCsinceChristmas2021afterweclosed ourgatesduetotheCOVID-19pandemic.Sofarthisyear,wehavewelcomed22,079 visitorsthroughourgates.

Thenewsanitationmethodsinplace,suchasthecompulsorywearingoffacemasksand handwashingstations,willensurethesafetyofouranimals,whilepeopleofallagescan nowonceagainseeandlearnaboutsomeoftheincrediblewildlifeofCameroon.This experience,withthehelpofourtrainedeco-guidesandinformationdisplayedatthe centre,willhopefullyhelpallvisitorstoappreciatejusthowimportantitistocareforand protectthesewonderfulcreaturesandtheirnaturalhabitat.
