According to an IBM article titled, What Is Generative AI? Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) is a form of narrow AI that utilizes limited memory capabilities. It has the ability to create images, videos, text, audio, and code based on user prompts. Generative AI is one of the most prominent forms of AI today and serves as 4 the foundation for many companies' custom AI software and integrations. This type of AI leverages both machine learning and deep learning techniques 5 to produce its outputs.

Generative AI has been rapidly expanding into new areas, demonstrating significant growth potential in recent years. It's no surprise that many companies are eager to integrate AI into their operations to optimize tasks and improve efficiency. However, much of this AI software is built on top of preexisting models that serve as the foundation for developers to customize with their own content and taskspecific requests. The leading providers of these core AI models include OpenAI, Microsoft AI, Anthropic, and Google— each specializing in different areas of AI innovation.

This innovation has enabled other companies to expand AI’s reach by leveraging provided APIs, allowing them to develop their own AI-powered applications.

By building on existing AI models, businesses can create specialized tools tailored to various industries and user needs. This has made it even easier for individuals to integrate AI into their daily lives, whether through smart assistants, automation software, or creative applications.

According to a 2024 Gallup Report in partnership with Telescope, nearly all Americans use products that involve artificial intelligence features, but nearly two-thirds (64%) don’t realize it.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that uses natural language processing to generate human-like text and computer code in response to user prompts.10

I’m here to assist with answering questions, generating creative ideas, solving problems, and providing support across a wide range of topics.

Specifically, I’m based on the GPT-4 architecture, which makes me particularly adept at conversation and providing detailed, thoughtful responses. Think of me as a virtual assistant, knowledge source, or brainstorming partner! !”

Overall ChatGPT is very aware of it’s strengths and showcases why it’s become the leader of AI platforms. ChatGPT offers many of it’s desktop features in the app allowing for a more robust and enhanced experience. However, even with all of these features, it’s desktop application lacks behind it’s mobile application in terms of helpful guides and prompts. It’s very thorough in its response with links to relevant sources but still shows potential to grow in other areas like it’s interface and user interactions.

Use Case: instructor and student support Khan Academy is a free, online learning resource that offers videos, practice exercises, and other materials to help students and educators. Khan Academy has begun integrating AI to optimize tasks and enhance personalized education with the help of OpenAI. Using GPT-4, they developed Khanmigo, an AI-powered learning assistant designed to support both students and educators.

With Khanmigo, Khan Academy is reimagining education by providing students with a personalized tutor and teachers with an intelligent assistant. It offers real-time feedback, adaptive learning tools, and guidance to help students think critically through problems. For educators, Khanmigo streamlines content creation and test prep, generating study materials, practice exams, 11 and customized learning plans. By reducing administrative workload, it allows educators to focus more on individual student needs, creating personalized and meaningful learning experiences.

While still evolving, Khanmigo is shaping the future of online education and AI-powered learning.

Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered chatbot that helps users be more productive and efficient. It works with Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Copilot can help create content, analyze data, and automate task.13

Copilot emphasizes it’s chatbot as a ‘companion’ as opposed to a personal assistant. This becomes evident in it’s choice of words, tone, and ability to conversate. Copilot even offers a daily podcast and prompts promoting wellness and wellbeing. However, one can’t help but notice that it’s still an AI machine after all is said and done. It’s empty design, occasional inaccurate results (no source links), and slow response time results in an obvious robotic presence.

Ai in e-commerce: ASOS

Use Case: employee assistance and customer experience

ASOS currently partners with Microsoft Azure, Solutions, and Co Pilot to support operational management, enhance digital platforms, and increase customer experience/engagement.14 ASOS remains very transparent about their AI usage and plans for both internal and external operations. The implementation of this AI is transforming various aspects of business operations, from data-driven decisionmaking and task management to enhancing code production and streamlining workflows through employee portals and cloud storage.

Companies leverage AI for trend forecasting, improving the customer experience, and even developing AI stylists that provide personalized recommendations.15 Take for example, this video on the left showcasing ASOS’ product and size recommendations based on user input. These personalized algorithms allow for tailoring content and services to individual users, while AI-driven customer service solutions enhance support efficiency and responsiveness. Together, these advancements drive innovation and efficiency across its company.

Claude is a multimodal chatbot that can accept text, audio, and visual inputs. It can answer questions, summarize documents, generate long-form text, diagrams, animations, and program code.17

I'm a large language model trained to engage in helpful conversations and assist with a wide variety of tasks - from analysis and writing to coding and math. Claude shows tremendous growth potential compared to other well established AI companies, such as Microsoft or Google. Claude is human focused and has a sense of warmth and empathy in the way it interacts with the user. However, because Claude can’t access the internet it has a visible comprehension gap in response to user prompts and questions. Similarly, it tends to guide the user away from certain questions pertaining to its use and technical background, describing it as “staying within it limitations”.

Ai in logistics: Factory AI

Use Case: labor efficiency and software development Factory is a new company that focuses on streamlining and scaling software development through AI. Factory uses the Claude 3 model families to mimic human cognition in their product.

The AI is used to create systems called “droids” in order analyze code bases, make decisions, and automate task without human intervention. This analysis provides a compelling perspective on how AI should serve as a tool for enhancement but is often pushed beyond its intended capabilities. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged AI’s inevitable influence on the global economy and urged policymakers to address its implications. In a January 2024 article, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized AI’s potential to transform the workforce while also warning that it could significantly disrupt nearly half of all jobs.

This chart from the IMF outlines how AI might affect jobs in different countries by measuring exposure levels. They did this in two ways: 1. They analyzed job data from 142 countries using standard international job categories and data from the International Labour Organization.

2. For a deeper look, they studied 6 specific countries in more detail. Two advanced economies: US and UK; and four emerging market economies: Brazil, Colombia, India, and South Africa. Breaking down over 400 different job types in each country.

“The media hype surrounding AI has had three effects. First, it has helped us forget that this technology will mostly affect work rather than leisure. Second, it has exaggerated AI’s capacity to replicate the knowledge and expertise of workers.

Finally, it has understated the drawbacks of AI, most notably in its potential to exploit legal loopholes – in particular in copyright law. In general terms, AI reduces human work to a collection of data points, all while it remains highly dependent on that work in order to function. To develop a successful AI, one must not only tap into intellectual property without consent, but also extract 23 data from workers.”

She also highlighted the economic and technological disparities that rapid AI adoption may exacerbate, as wealthier, more technologically advanced nations can integrate AI more easily than lower-income countries. 24

The conversation surrounding the exploitation of workers using AI has been met with a series of controversies including the idea of AI replacing workers. While AI has shown its potential to benefit workers across several fields, it is still relatively new and has some challenges to consider. Hubert Guillaud, a journalist and former editor-in-chief of InternetActu.net, recently wrote an article detailing how AI in the workforce is often glamorized in the media and should be taken more seriously. THE INFLUENCE OF AI ON HUMAN INTUITION AND CRITICAL THINKING

AI is often seen as a tool designed to handle quick tasks and simple decision-making, freeing up mental space for more complex and meaningful work. However, with its increasing accessibility, at what point does convenience turn into overreliance? The brain, much like a muscle, requires constant exercise to stay sharp. This raises an important question: Could excessive AI use be making us less capable thinkers?

This concern isn’t new. When search engines like Google became widely available, similar debates arose about their impact on critical thinking. In 2011, researchers examined how easily accessible online information influenced memory retention. They found that individuals who relied on online searches retained less information compared to those who sought knowledge from offline sources.

While perspectives on this have evolved, the underlying concern remains relevant in the age of AI. Dr. Michael Gerlich, Head of the Center for Strategic Corporate Foresight and Sustainability at the Swiss Business School, has explored this issue further. In a UK-based study, he found a correlation between high AI usage and diminished cognitive skills—a finding that, while thought-provoking, isn’t universally accepted as fact. Public intellectual Yuval Noah Harari has warned that growing dependence on AI could lead to "programmed thinking" and societal stagnation. Yet, Gerlich takes a more balanced view, emphasizing that responsible 25 AI integration is key.

THE CORRECT USE OF AI ACCORDING TO DR. GERLICH “AI tools like the popular large language models can be used for critical discussions and not only as an instrument that replaces one’s own work or thinking. Educational systems should emphasize active learning, promoting exercises like argument analysis and problembased learning,” he added. “In professional settings, creating environments where independent decision-making is valued can help maintain these skills. Engaging in reflective activities, such as journaling or debating, can also foster deeper cognitive engagement.”

Ultimately, the choice rests with each individual: whether to take the convenient route of allowing AI to handle our critical thinking, or to preserve this essential cognitive process for ourselves.”

In doing so, we had the opportunity to speak with Vinod Krishnan, a UX researcher who has led AI driven product research at companies like McKinsey and UKG, and Victor Angel, CEO of Omica AI, a digital biobank for AI and life science research.

As Vinod Krishnan says, “I've used and, for the last several weeks, have been introduced to a lot of AI tools because there's just so many people making so many tools and insane number of companies that have come up in the last six months, focused on AI based solutions - for industries and problems that you can’t even imagine. Even for lawn mowing companies like who would have thought of that... If you are smart and diligent and get ahead in the the AI race and learn how to use these tools, you'll be on the forefront.”

While concerns about autonomous AI are valid and important, it’s equally crucial to recognize its benefits.

However, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t proceed with caution - we must remain vigilant as AI continues to advance.

- Victor Angel “I see these AI models as just an extension of technology that's been previously available. Which is essentially pattern recognition in a way that can be transformed into generative outputs, but at the end of the day, they're based on a pattern,” says Victor Angel. “I don't believe that AI has these, at least now, these emergent capabilities of being. It's just really a mirror of the data that's been inputted into this models. So, I think it's gonna be concerning when people attribute these capabilities to AI models and hope that they're better at certain things than they really are - it can be dangerous and seductive.”

2 The AI super assistant has been a longanticipated trend that is now becoming a reality.

A wide range of AI-powered assistant applications are being developed and released to cater to diverse user needs. As AI integration becomes more widespread, these intelligent assistants are quickly becoming a standard feature in both professional and personal settings.

“I think the ones that I've seen are where the AI tool on the background silently does its job and you have very limited ways of interacting with it. That's where I've seen that there's more likelihood of success with AI. When it’s just acting as an assistant. Those are the type of AI agents that I see are doing pretty well at least in my experience,” says Vinod Krishnan.

AI agents have been around for a long time, helping streamline tasks and improve efficiency. Now, they are more accessible than ever.

3 The accelerating pace of AI technology will impact market adoption.

With the quick rise of social media and technology, information and services have become readily accessible at our fingertips. AI has further amplified this reality, making instant access to knowledge and automation more seamless than ever. As people become increasingly accustomed to immediate results, markets are needing to adapt to this new way of life.

According to Victor Angel, “I think society isn't ready for much of it in general. Simply because of the speed of progress. I just think this year, the speed of progress will call for people to be very resilient. I think that's where designers’ design thinking and practices really come into place. How do you make sense of such rapid change? Different AI agents are going to enter the workforce, if not already, so there will be shifts in the way that companies are built. The way companies hire, job descriptions, the ability to perform your job, and you will no longer be doing the job itself but rather learning how to work with an AI agent or a group of agents. So, I think that's going to be the next big significant shift that we're gonna see in the [immediate] future.”

Victor Angel questions this impact on businesses by bringing up how it might be perceived, saying, “It’s definitely causing disruption because it's changing a lot of the fundamental assumptions that built many of the markets and industries today... not only economically but also people's purpose.

What happens when you get displaced by AI agents that can do what you've learned to do over the last 20 years?

Where is it that you add value?”

Vinod Krishnan shared a similar sentiment, “You see companies say ‘oh, we're gonna stop hiring software engineers and have AI write the code.’ They’ll probably have a small proportion of software and if they're really serious and they follow through, they will need extremely high, quality engineers, who understand the code written by AI to be able to guide it. The proper way to make sure that it doesn't build something of its own that thinks, is human oversight. Especially when you want to use it as a tool rather than anything else, something more nefarious like how we've seen in the movies, right?” Krishnan continues with this notion by considering how the future of AI could take shape, “Maybe disruptive but I think every time we've had disruptive technology, we've all responded in ways to adjust to it. Will it cause unemployment? I don't know. But if it does I want to be on the forefront of people trying to figure out how to remain employed. So yeah, I think maybe it could cause disruption but every disruption in the industry means more ways for people to find new ways of leveraging it... the biggest offset of disruption, is what becomes obsolete. Who becomes obsolete? What skills are becoming obsolete? So I don't think AI will make people obsolete. It will only make those people who don't get on the bandwagon of ‘how do I use AI?’ obvious.”
