LIMA CITY HOSPITAL - 1899 CORNER OF SCOTT AND MARKET STREET
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
On behalf of the Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Trustees, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for your steadfast support of our community’s healthcare needs. It is because of your generosity that life-changing, state-of-the-art technology and services are provided to Lima Memorial patients, improving their quality of life.
In 2023, our donor community united to raise $2 million to ensure access to advanced local health care. These efforts included the establishment of a dedicated Observation Unit, which has helped alleviate the need for patients to wait for in-hospital room availability. Even more, this unit is allowing our providers to focus on the unique short-term needs of these patients. Because of your support, Lima Memorial has increased its capacity to care for more patients in a quality setting designed to quickly get them back on the road to their recovery.
As you read the stories in FOCUS, I hope you will be as deeply moved as I was by the many ways your gifts are positively and immediately impacting the health of our neighbors, friends and families. You can be proud of the investment you have made in advancing the health of our community.
For the past 125 years, Lima Memorial has made it a priority to respond quickly and responsibly to emerging healthcare needs in our community. This is possible because of your trust, support and generosity.
I am deeply grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to continuing the mission of the Foundation.
Thank you so much!

The Lima Memorial Foundation is comprised of community leaders and Lima Memorial Health System representatives committed to providing leadership in the acquisition, management and distribution of philanthropic gifts. They also provide fiduciary responsibility for funds raised. Published by Lima Memorial Marketing marketing@limamemorial.org
Dear Friends,
As Lima Memorial celebrates its 125th anniversary, we continue our strong legacy of caring for our community. From a humble beginning in 1899 on the corner of East Market and Scott Streets near the Ottawa River, Lima Memorial has persevered through decades of challenge, change and tremendous growth. For 125 years, Lima Memorial has stood as a beacon of hope and healing for patients and families in the communities we serve.
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing many amazing moments of growth for our health system, including the addition of state-of-the-art equipment and technology and the establishment of many new programs and services, all to improve the quality of life for those who’ve entrusted us with their care. As I reflect on our history and think about our present, I’m deeply grateful to all of the dedicated associates whose unwavering commitment has propelled our hospital to become the foremost provider of advanced health care in our region.
In this edition of FOCUS, you will read stories about patients and areas of our health system directly impacted by our generous donor community. From the establishment of our new dedicated Observation Unit and the creation of our Chronic Disease Management Program to one man’s selfless legacy gift to the Foundation, these gifts truly demonstrate the power of giving back.
This year, we’re celebrating more than our 125-year history. We’re celebrating all who have been a part of our history at Lima Memorial, especially our donor community. From the beginning, our donors’ commitment to advancing the health of our community has provided for quality, compassionate care. For that, we are so very grateful.
Thank you for placing your trust in us to be the leader in health care in our region.
Sincerely,

In 2023, the community united to raise more than $500,000 to help establish a dedicated Observation Unit within Lima Memorial Health System. Now fully open, this dedicated space is designed to expedite patient diagnosis and streamline treatment, enhancing the overall experience for patients and their families. Plans are currently underway to create additional rooms to meet the increased demand for observation status care at Lima Memorial.
“This is a true testament to the power of generosity. By UNITING together, we have shaped the patient and family experience to be more EFFICIENT and COMPASSIONATE.” A DEDICATED SPACE

Thank you to our wonderful donor community for joining together to help us increase access to the Great Care our patients rely on at Lima Memorial.
“THIS NEW UNIT HAS TRULY ENHANCED OUR ABILITY TO PROVIDE EFFICIENT, QUALITY CARE AND OUR PATIENTS’ EXPERIENCE. THE GRATITUDE WE HAVE FOR THE DONOR COMMUNITY GOES BEYOND WORDS.
- Jennifer Williams, RN, Clinical Manager, 2 South and Observation Unit
For patients with chronic diseases, navigating health care can be confusing and intimidating. Thomas Pina of Wapakoneta understands this well, as his diabetes journey exemplifies the essential need for comprehensive care that supports and educates patients in all areas of their well-being.
Thomas’s journey started with a swollen leg, which led to a diabetes diagnosis. Managing diabetes consumed his life with 10 blood sugar readings and 300 mg of insulin daily. This was incredibly challenging for Thomas, who worked in automotive manufacturing at the time.
“If I had to take a shot or a reading, I would need to find someone to take my place,” Thomas shares about his work life. “It wasn’t as easy as it sounds.”
Struggling through six doctors, insulin shot bruises and mounting frustrations, Thomas quit his care plans completely. It was during Thomas’s visit to Lima Memorial’s Wapakoneta Medical Center for another health concern that Cheryl Wayman, Certified Physician Assistant, referred him to Lima Memorial’s Comprehensive Health Center to meet with a provider specializing in diabetic care. The personalized approach made a significant difference for Thomas.
Currently, Thomas only takes 40 units of insulin and two daily readings—a major improvement for his quality of life. He is extremely thankful for the Chronic Disease Management Program, renamed the Comprehensive Health Center, made possible by our donor community, as it has provided him with a roadmap to living a healthier and happier life while managing diabetes.
“ I really want to thank the donors a lot,” says Thomas. “Thanks to this program, there has been an incredible difference in my perspective of my condition and moving forward with positivity.”
“I REALLY WANT TO THANK THE DONORS A LOT. THANKS TO THIS PROGRAM, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE IN MY PERSPECTIVE OF MY CONDITION AND MOVING FORWARD WITH POSITIVITY. ”
- THOMAS PINA, PATIENT
In 2022, the Lima Memorial Foundation donor community raised more than $750,000 to establish the Chronic Disease Management Program, renamed the Comprehensive Health Center, creating a network of care for patients with chronic conditions.

The Lima Memorial Foundation Emerging Philanthropists Committee was formed to bring together community advocates with an interest in supporting local health care at Lima Memorial through philanthropic gifts of time, talent and treasure. The committee identifies a project or need and focuses their efforts on raising awareness and offering solutions to improve the health and well-being of our community. Last fall, the Emerging Philanthropists, West Ohio Food Bank (WOFB) and Lima Senior High School Culinary Program joined forces to host EMERGE, an event dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity in our region and how access to quality food impacts overall health. EMERGE illustrated the partnership between Lima Memorial and the WOFB to ensure those in our community have access to food needed to keep them healthy.
“We saw an INCREDIBLE opportunity to unite the West Ohio Food Bank with Lima Senior High School Culinary Arts students. Our goal was to RAISE AWARENESS about food insecurity in our area and the efforts of Lima Memorial in bridging this CRITICAL gap.”
- ANN WELLY, EMERGING PHILANTHROPISTS CHAIR, ALL SERVICE GLASS PRESIDENTIn 2023, the Lima Memorial Foundation organized several Insight events, which offered community members an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse of the remarkable impact made possible through support of the Foundation.
Attendees toured several areas at Lima Memorial and enjoyed conversations with past patients and current LMHS surgeons and team members.

The Lima Memorial Foundation is honored to partner with more than 100 area businesses and organizations who share a commitment to advancing the health of our community. Each has an incredibly profound narrative that illustrates a strong sense of duty to the community. This includes the story of Armor Fire Protection, Inc. It is a story that runs deeper than business and is rooted in a shared commitment to ensuring the well-being of our community for generations to come.
Having spent years in fire protection and learning from respected influencers in the industry, John Skinner knew he wanted to establish a business of his own. The business that would become Armor Fire Protection, Inc. had humble beginnings, taking shape in an upstairs bedroom in John’s home on Grand Avenue in Lima, Ohio.
“My sister’s old bedroom became the office,” details Jamey Skinner, John’s son and current owner and operator of Armor Fire Protection, Inc. “Purple shag carpet and all.”
Since then, Armor Fire Protection, Inc. has provided essential fire sprinkler systems to many properties throughout Northwest Ohio, including Lima Memorial Health System. Jamey can attest that the business has taught him profound lessons about what it means to give back to the community and where you live.
“One of the earliest life lessons my father taught me when I was a kid was to never leave anything worse than you found it,” shares Jamey. “Leave your knowledge, your time, your talents, whatever they may be. You’ve got to leave something for the next generation behind you.”
This philosophy is evident in Jamey’s 27-year support of the Lima Memorial Foundation. By giving back faithfully to the Foundation, he knows 100% of his company’s contributions will go towards bettering his community.
“The work of the Foundation has always been admirable,” expresses Jamey. “The Foundation makes a point to stop by and personally share where our contributions are going each year, and it’s appreciated.”
The Lima Memorial Foundation thanks Armor Fire Protection, Inc. for its 27 years of partnership and commitment to advancing the health care of our community through generous contributions.
“IT’S A GREAT FEELING TO SEE WHERE WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LEAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY.”

“IF LIMA MEMORIAL DIDN’T HAVE THAT TECHNOLOGY THAT NIGHT, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE DIED.”
PATIENT
Made possible by donations from our remarkable donor community, state-of-the art cone-beam CT technology and the superDimension™ navigation system enable physicians to access the most challenging tumor locations.
In the summer of 2021, while working nightshifts at a factory, Ruby Cass would keep a small cup nearby in case she needed to cough up blood. Dealing with extreme exhaustion and severe coughing episodes, her health concerns were dismissed as effects of COVID-19. During one particular night, a coworker insisted she go to Lima Memorial and rushed her to the Emergency Center, a visit that revealed a more concerning condition. Ruby quickly received care from Dr. Jason Stienecker, Lima Memorial Pulmonologist, and underwent diagnostic testing with a cone-beam CT scan and a bronchoscopy utilizing the superDimension™ navigation system. This technology allowed for an immediate diagnosis—an airway severely obstructed by a cancerous tumor.
“Dr. Stienecker told me my airway was only as big as a coffee stir stick,” shares Ruby. “He didn’t know how I was breathing, let alone working.”
A tracheostomy performed by Dr. Stienecker that night sustained Ruby until her stoma procedure and subsequent tumor removal. Through chemotherapy, radiation, multiple cancer diagnoses and the removal of half a lung, Ruby’s faith was challenged.
“I would sit in church, saying, ‘poor me,’ because they said, ‘Cancer,’” shares Ruby. “Then God told me, ‘You’re gonna go through this, but you’re gonna go through it,’ and I knew then that I’m not gonna die. I’m gonna have to go through it, but I’m not gonna die.”
Today, Ruby moves forward with true determination and an incredible testimony, expressing gratitude for access to advanced lung cancer diagnostic technology.
Thank you to our unwavering donor community for making Ruby’s life-saving care possible.

A planned gift is any gift made, in lifetime or at death, as part of your overall financial and / or estate plan. The Foundation offers many creative ways to structure a planned gift through bequests, retirement plans, gift annuities, charitable trusts and other charitable gift planning structures. A planned gift can offer tax benefits while also strengthening your legacy. Individuals who make a planned gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation are recognized with membership in the Heritage Society.
If you have included the Lima Memorial Foundation in your will, trust or other planned gift or desire more information about planned giving, please contact us at lmfoundation@limamemorial.org or 419-226-5087. We would be honored to help create a plan that fulfills your personal, financial and estate planning objectives.
In 2005, 83-year-old Henry Dietrich found himself nearing the end of his life. Known for his resilience in overcoming past cardiac concerns, it became evident that this time Parkinson’s disease would continue to weaken him. Despite his frailty, Henry, of sound mind, quietly requested his wife Phyllis to document his final wishes. Among these wishes was a desire to leave a legacy gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation, ensuring the sense of community, compassion and Great Care he experienced at Lima Memorial would continue long after his passing.
For Henry and Phyllis Dietrich, Lima Memorial held profound significance. Not only was it a workplace for Phyllis—a 1954 graduate of the Lima Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and a devoted volunteer—but it was also a place of healing for their family. It was where all three of their daughters were born, where their daughter Rose received cancer care and where both Henry and Phyllis confronted their own health challenges. Even more, Lima Memorial played a role as one of Henry's clients when he established Dietrich Incorporated, a commercial flooring and ceiling business.
“Our entire family has quite the history with Lima Memorial, dating back to my mom’s days in nursing school,” Deb Williams, Henry and Phyllis’s eldest daughter shares. “I still have some of the letters my parents would write back and forth to each other when Mom was in nursing school.”
The care and support Lima Memorial provided to Henry and his family through the years left an indelible mark that led to a selfless act of generosity in his final moments. Deb, reflecting on her father’s journey with Lima Memorial, shares:
“I think he knew he was failing. During those couple of days, he had time to reflect and see the people who made a difference in his life and to show his gratitude and appreciation before he passed.”
