I recognize what truly makes Lima Memorial stand out is the people – the people who work within its walls, the people who choose Lima Memorial for their health care and the people who contribute financially to support its evolving needs. Within the pages of this publication, you will learn the stories of many of these great people. Together, we remain laser-focused on doing what is best for our patients. That is why earlier this year, the Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Directors approved a two-year, $2.5 million project to transform the way inpatient rehabilitation is delivered in our region. We will create a unique, community-based environment for patients and their families, complete with innovative technology. I am pleased to share we are more than halfway toward meeting this goal; our community will soon benefit from receiving this advanced level of care locally. Through community support, we will transform the way care is delivered for patients who require intense rehabilitation following a stroke, trauma, major injury or debilitating illness. The inpatient rehabilitation project will leverage the outstanding care being provided by our inpatient rehabilitation team by uniquely creating a family-centered, community-based environment, complete with innovative therapeutic technology. Patients enter our facility having lost the lives they once knew. Through immense support and intense therapy only provided within a hospital, patients can reclaim the life they once enjoyed. Gifts designated to the inpatient rehabilitation project will bring a new level of care to our community and be instrumental in helping patients take their first new step…sooner.

THE ODDS Four patients, along with their family members, came through the doors of Lima Memorial Health System following sudden, life-changing health crises. Their stories stand out because of their courage and determination in overcoming incredible odds to regain their independence.
On the morning of October 23, 2017, the home of Jim and Fran Mauk exploded, trapping Jim and Fran under the rubble. It took firefighters an hour to rescue them from the debris of their collapsed home. Jim and Fran suffered serious injuries. The couple each underwent multiple surgeries and spent extensive time in Lima Memorial’s Intensive Care Unit before being transferred to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit where they began their road to independence with an aggressive therapy regimen. Jim and Fran praised the medical team who worked with them and supported them on their road to recovery. “The therapists constantly pushed us to do more for ourselves. The care was superb,” Fran stated. Jim believes it was a miracle they survived. “God has something in mind for us. He wants us to tell our story,” he said. When the couple learned our funding priority is to transform the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Lima Memorial, they were both thrilled. “To have a place like that to teach and help you, it would be just tremendous, “shared Jim. At 4 a.m. on December 19, 2016, Thom Purdy suffered a severe, debilitating stroke. He was told he would never walk or talk again. However, with expert care from the medical teams of ProMedica and Lima Memorial, Thom was able to take his new first step again. Lima Memorial’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit became home to Thom and his wife, Sharon, for almost two months. Having his family close by was a real motivator for Thom. He was determined to get back to doing the things he loved the most...at home. What Thom didn’t expect was how his family was going to unexpectedly grow. “It was so amazing the love I got. They (the care team) became like family.” When asked about her experience, Sharon acknowledged the incredible care team. “They worked diligently with both of us to get Thom where he is today,” shared Sharon. Even more, with the planned transformation on the horizon, Sharon stated, “It’s going to be amazing for patients to have that level of care combined with new rooms and new equipment. THE ODDS
On July 1, 2017, RJ Patton was enjoying one of his favorite activities, riding dirt bikes with friends, when he lost control of his bike. He went airborne and landed hard on the left side of his body. RJ suffered a severe head injury, broken collar bone and injuries to his left foot. After being stabilized in Lima Memorial’s Intensive Care Unit, RJ was transferred to Columbus where he received specialized inpatient rehabilitation therapy. It was extremely difficult for RJ to leave behind his mother, fiancé, daughter and friends in Lima. After just two weeks, he requested to come back “home.” RJ returned to Lima Memorial to complete his therapy on the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. RJ understands the importance of being able to remain in one’s own community when rehabbing from a severe trauma. He is pleased future patients will be able to receive highly specialized inpatient therapy close to home once the transformation is complete. “It was hard being away from everyone,” stated RJ regarding the time he had to spend in Columbus. “When I returned to Lima, a lot more of my friends were able to visit. Transitional Living Apartment
Kitchen What were once considered routine activities of daily living, like reaching for an item in a cupboard, transferring a pot from the stove to the counter and removing laundry from the washer and dryer, now require a new set of skills. The kitchen and utility area within the transitional apartment is being designed to create a safe space to practice these techniques and prepare our patients to return home confidently.

Regaining independence means being able to safely maneuver in key areas of your home and perform essential activities of daily living. The transitional living apartment will allow patients and families to safely practice skills once taken for granted.

Family Area The family area will prepare patients and their families for the new challenges they may face when returning home, challenges not previously encountered before their injury or illness. Once simple tasks, like opening a storm door, getting up from a sofa or recliner, maneuvering around furniture and turning on lights in the home, suddenly become daily tasks that need to be relearned and practiced. This family area within our transitional apartment will create the optimal setting to position our patients and their families for success at home.

Garage
A simulated automobile will provide patients and their families the ability to experience safe car transfers, preparing them for discharge. The car can be raised and lowered so patients can practice getting in and out of a vehicle similar to their own. Work benches and tools will be positioned throughout the garage as a means to help patients regain their fine motor skills in a familiar environment.

This unique rehabilitation environment will simulate the experiences found in a typical community and will be complete with a real-to-life grocery store, café seating, doctor’s office and salon. Patients will work on important life skills while under the guidance and supervision of clinical staff. This type of rehabilitation boosts self-confidence and helps patients return to the most productive and independent life possible.
A spacious dining area is being designed to further develop patients’ fine motor skills while promoting social interactions with others facing similar challenges. While dining, patients and families will benefit from education and training during therapy-guided feeding and swallowing sessions.
LEGACY GIFTS MAKE THEIR MARK AR-HALE FAMILY FOUNDATION MAKES GENEROUS GIFT The Ar-Hale Family Foundation has pledged a $100,000 gift to support the planned transitional apartment in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center project in memory of Jeffrey A. Hawk. “The gift seemed fitting, given Jeffrey’s personal connection to rehabilitation at Lima Memorial,” stated Jan Hawk, Ar-Hale Family Foundation Director. The gift memorializes her late husband’s spirit of giving back. “Our family’s investment will make sure future patients have state-of-the-art rehab accessible right here in Lima.” Jeffrey was an important member of the community and Lima Memorial Family. “Having the transitional apartment dedicated in his memory is like having a piece of him living on in Lima Memorial Hospital. We’re keeping his legacy alive,” remarked Jan.

MEDICAL STAFF COMMITS $200,000
Dr. Pamela Gardner was the first in line to donate $50,000 to have a family-centered patient room named in her late husband Denny’s memory. Following a significant stroke, Denny was admitted to Lima Memorial’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. His prognosis was dismal – he would never be able to walk or talk again. Through intense therapy, Denny regained these abilities. “We were able to travel together, and he was able to enjoy a strong father-son bond. Additionally, Denny was able to be involved again with the horses he loved so much,” remarked Dr. Gardner. “They gave me my husband back.”
The Lima Memorial Medical Staff came together to fund the gymnasium with a $200,000 commitment. While every aspect of the new Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is being uniquely designed to be therapeutic, the gymnasium will undoubtedly be the heart of it all. “We felt compelled to show our support for this tremendous project,” stated Dr. Patrick Behm, Chief of Medical Staff at Lima Memorial Health System. “We all have our own personal connection to this project, with the common thread being our patients. They deserve access to the very best.”
“Denny’s strongest motivator to improve was having family, friends and our support network close by,” stated Dr. Gardner. “Patients and families deserve to receive the most advanced rehabilitation locally.” “I felt compelled to invest in this project as a way to pay it forward,” reflected Dr. Gardner. “For me, it’s a way to say ‘thank you’ while honoring my husband and best friend.”

DONORS TAKE GIVING TO HEART Thanks to many generous donors, $1 million was invested to bring the most sophisticated heart rhythm management capabilities to Lima Memorial and our community. Additionally, the hearts of our region can now benefit from the most advanced cardiac imaging technology and support systems available.
ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY SERVICES EXPAND Gifts to the Foundation allowed for the expansion of our electrophysiology (EP) program. In partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we brought highly sophisticated heart rhythm management capabilities to our community. “This collaboration further enhances our ability to provide exceptional care to our patients locally, where they deserve to receive it,” stated Dr. Paul Anike, Medical Director of the Lima Memorial Cardiac Catheterization Lab. “Lima Memorial is both honored and appreciative of the wonderful partnership we have with The Ohio State University Heart & Vascular Center, including EP Physicians Dr. Ralph Augostini and Dr. Emile Daoud. These physicians perform highly specialized and intricate EP procedures day in and day out to correct heart rhythm issues for our patients.” Thanks to donor support, this highly specialized team now has the tools and resources needed to expand their services and treat a wider variety of heart rhythm management issues - right here.

With the addition of CardioHelp, a portable heart-lung support system, our medical team gains valuable time to care for our most critically ill patients. FURRY FRIEND BENEFITS VETERANS AND FOUNDATION This blue-eyed Siberian Husky puppy made his debut at the Journey’s live auction. The canine has been raised by Josh Heldman and Kellee Landon, the owners of Midnight Star Kennels in Ada. The successful bidders chose to donate the Husky to a military veteran needing support. Midnight Star Kennels is coordinating service dog training. Service dogs provide mental and emotional stability for veterans going through difficult transitions.

RED CARPET CONTINUES ITS JOURNEY Thanks to the generosity of T&D Interiors, Journey to the Red Carpet guests received an authentic Red Carpet experience. The locally-owned flooring business generously donated the 6,400 square feet of red carpet that became a focal point of the gala. “With this year’s Journey being a red carpet event, it seemed only fitting to become involved in this fashion,” shared Troy Selover, Project Manager at T&D Interiors and Lima Memorial Foundation 1899 Society committee member. “An important goal of our company is to connect with the community.” The red carpet will go on to connect many individuals within the community, as it will make a second appearance at the 2019 Night to Shine of Lima. RECOGNIZING PHILANTHROPY This spring, the Lima Memorial Foundation hosted Ovation, an event celebrating those who believe in and are committed to advancing the health of the Lima community through gifts to our Foundation. Special awards were given to businesses and individuals who achieved milestone levels of giving. A highlight of the event was a poignant tribute to the late Jeffrey A. Hawk. Jeffrey was honored for his philanthropy and genuine care for Lima Memorial and our community. Defined by four core pillars, Jeffrey dedicated his life to his faith, family, business and our community. He was a long-time chairman of American Trim and proudly served the family-owned business in a variety of roles over 34 years. Jeffrey’s family, friends, business associates and Lima Memorial associates fondly recalled the instances when Jeffrey provided support, encouragement and guidance with his unique perspective, insightful advice and trademark wit. Fittingly, the event was held at the Lima Memorial Wellness Center, where Jeffrey logged hundreds of hours in physical therapy and became a beloved member of the Wellness Center family.

CORA DAVIES AWARD The Cora Davies Award pays tribute to the first president of the Lima Hospital Nursing Alumnae Association who fostered a spirit of loyalty and promoted the general welfare of the hospital. This award is reserved exclusively for individuals and businesses who demonstrate a significant commitment to improving the health of our community by contributing cumulative gifts of $250,000 or more to the Lima Memorial Foundation. The Cora Davies Award was presented to Tuttle Construction | Touchstone CPM.
EMERALD AWARD The Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary received the Emerald Award for their dedicated service to our health system and for reaching a record-setting milestone of $2 million of cumulative gifts to our Foundation. The emerald is symbolic of hope, renewal and growth, rooted from the utmost generosity. The award presented at Ovation was handcrafted, representing the unique gifts of time, talent and treasure each volunteer brings to our health system.

AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR Dr. Pamela Gardner, a Cardiologist with the Lima Memorial Heart Institute, received the esteemed honor of Ambassador of the Year at Ovation. This award recognizes an individual who exemplifies volunteerism by selflessly and enthusiastically devoting his or her time, energy and resources to further the mission of the Lima Memorial Foundation. Dr. Gardner serves as the Medical Director of Lima Memorial’s Congestive Heart Failure Clinic. When our Foundation was given the opportunity to raise funds to bring significant cardiac advancements to our community in 2017, Dr. Gardner was quick to offer her help. She rallied support from all sectors and inspired us all to invest in the hearts of our community.
INFINITY AWARD The Infinity Award honors an individual or business displaying a boundless commitment to the Lima Memorial Foundation. Tracie Sanchez and Lima Pallet Company were collectively recognized for helping to transform 54,000 square feet of empty warehouse space into Lima’s largest art gallery for our 2017 Journey for the Heart gala. Not only did Tracie provide us with four semi-truck loads of the country’s best pallets, she also provided us the talent to efficiently and effectively move this up-cycled timber all over the warehouse to create walls, bars, furniture and art.

A TRADITION OF SERVICE When Lima Memorial first opened its doors in 1899, the Auxiliary – then called the Board of Lady Managers – met monthly to support fundraising efforts. Donations collected over the next three years included 200 jars of fruit, 228 glasses of jelly and 13 quarts of grape juice, along with various sundry items. Now, more than a century later, the Auxiliary has raised in excess of $2 million in support of Lima Memorial and its highly recognized medical programs and services. “Our Auxiliary keeps very busy throughout the entire year to support Lima Memorial Health System and make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families,” stated Roberta Brewer, LMH Auxiliary President. “Our volunteers can be found in nearly every area of the hospital. They provide patient transport, visitor information, flower delivery, chaplain services, office support, hospitality and customer service in the cafés and gift shop. On top of all of this, our volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds to support the health system.”

ASSOCIATE RELIEF FUND
Many associates choose to designate their gift to the Associate Relief Fund, a program created to help associates in their time of need. When Brittney Stroh, Registered Nurse, became an unexpected recipient of a gift from the Associate Relief Fund, she was overwhelmed with gratitude for her fellow associates and their generosity. In February of 2018, Brittney’s home was completely destroyed by fire. While extremely grateful that her husband and two young children were safe, she quickly realized her family needed the most basic supplies, such as groceries, toothbrushes and diapers. A gift from the Associate Relief Fund allowed Brittney to meet the immediate needs of her family.
