As I reflect on my years as CEO of Lima Memorial Health System, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to lead our community’s only locally owned hospital. Lima Memorial’s roots run deep, keeping care close to home and guided by people who live, work and care deeply about our community. I am equally grateful for the generosity of our donors, whose support strengthens access to care, advances life-changing programs and ensures our hospital is equipped to serve with excellence and compassion.
Having served Lima Memorial and our community for more than 25 years, I am grateful for my time with the organization and confident in its continued strength and future leadership. I am especially confident in the leadership of Lynn Carpenter, who will assume the role of President and CEO, and in the talented team who will continue advancing the important work of the Lima Memorial Foundation.
As you read this year’s edition of FOCUS, you will see how your generosity continues to shape the care we provide. In 2025 alone, donor support helped fund critical investments, including a significant upgrade to our open MRI, further advancing early detection and care for our community. It is an honor to serve as Lima Memorial Health System’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Lima Memorial has been my professional home for more than 30 years. I hold deep respect and appreciation for this organization and the patients and families we are so privileged to care for. As I begin this next chapter, I do so with sincere gratitude for Mike Swick, whose leadership and vision have helped shape the organization we know today.
Throughout my tenure, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated teams and community partners who share a commitment to improving the health of our community. I am continually inspired by the individuals who bring our purpose to life — our caregivers, our patients and our generous supporters. Because of you, we have been able to invest in advanced technology, strengthen vital programs and broaden access to services for our friends and neighbors across the region.

COMFORT, CARE AND CLARITY IN EVERY SCAN
A $750,000 investment from Lima Memorial Foundation supporters has brought advanced imaging technology to our region, enhancing Lima Memorial Health System’s diagnostic capabilities with a state-of-the-art open high-field MRI system. Lima Memorial is currently the only provider in the region offering this level of MRI technology.
The upgraded MRI system represents a meaningful step forward in both precision and patient experience. Faster scan times, reduced noise and an open design help create a more comfortable environment for patients who may feel anxious or have difficulty in traditional MRI settings. Even more, clinicians benefit from high-quality imaging that supports confident, timely diagnosis.
For patients, the difference is immediate.
“I could not get over how tolerable it was,” shared Angela, a patient who was unable to complete a previous MRI due to claustrophobia. “A 20-minute scan instead of 40 made such a difference.”
Another patient, Raelene, who has undergone numerous MRIs due to chronic conditions said, “This was the most comfortable MRI I’ve ever had. The shorter scan time, the great sound system and the way the team cared for me made all the difference.”

The Alice Henderson Award pays tribute to Lima City Hospital’s first chief nurse who shaped our community’s healthcare delivery system more than a century ago. The Foundation presents the Infinity Award to individuals or businesses who have displayed a boundless commitment to Lima Memorial.
In 2025, the Infinity Award was presented to Lynn Schaub and the late Todd Schaub for their extraordinary devotion to the Foundation’s mission. Guided by their conviction that access to quality, local health care is a priority for everyone in our community, they have demonstrated their support through continued generosity.
AMBASSADOR of the Year
The Ambassador of the Year Award honors an individual who exemplifies volunteerism by selflessly and enthusiastically dedicating their time, energy and resources to furthering the mission of the Lima Memorial Foundation.
In 2025, this award was presented to Starr Gephart, who earned recognition for the numerous ways she enthusiastically gives her time, talent and treasure to Lima Memorial. Starr actively participates in the 1899 Society Committee and is a leader on the Journey auction team. Her creativity has helped turn Journey auctions into extraordinary, successful events.

During Ovation 2025, Lima Memorial Foundation proudly recognized associates who made a Leadership or Spirit Pledge through the annual associate giving campaign. These individuals demonstrated an exceptional commitment to supporting fellow associates, patients and the community through a pledge equal to 40 hours of pay.
Their generosity helps strengthen programs that impact lives across our health system, including the Associate Relief Fund, which provides assistance to team members facing unexpected hardships. By investing in one another and in the communities we serve, they continue a tradition of generosity that makes Lima Memorial a special place to work, receive care and give back.

Lima Memorial associates take great pride in participating in Living the Spirit, an associate-driven campaign that supports patients, programs and one another. With 100% leadership commitment and 83% associate participation, the 2025 campaign reflects the shared dedication of our team. DR. CORRY CLINTON GUIDING CARE. STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY.
Dr. Corry Clinton is more than a physician, he is a guide, a Foundation advocate and a champion of patient-centered care. As a provider at LMHS Northland Medical Center and Medical Director of the Comprehensive Health Center (CHC), Dr. Clinton is dedicated to helping patients navigate their health journeys with confidence and clarity, surrounded by a team that wraps them in a strong, compassionate community of care.
“Everyone deserves care,” Dr. Clinton shares. “Helping patients move forward, that’s what keeps me motivated every day.”
Dr. Clinton’s advocacy of the Lima Memorial Foundation deepened during the Journey Repackaged event in 2022, which raised funds to help establish the CHC. Witnessing the community rally together left a lasting impression.
“Seeing our community come together to support these projects was inspiring,” he reflects. “When the right resources are available, it directly benefits patients and strengthens the care we provide.”
Investments like the updated high-field open MRI have improved imaging efficiency, expanded patient options and enhanced overall care delivery. It is innovations like these that demonstrate how philanthropy directly shapes the health and experience of patients.
“Philanthropy strengthens the hospital system,” Dr. Clinton explains. “It makes life easier for patients and providers, and that ripple effect is felt in every corner of the organization.”
At the CHC, patients can address multiple conditions, such as heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes in a single coordinated visit. This model not only improves outcomes but fosters a sense of connection and continuity in care.
“It saves patients time and frustration,” Dr. Clinton says. “More importantly, it helps them feel supported. When providers communicate seamlessly, patients experience better care.”

Last September, more than 400 friends of the Lima Memorial Foundation gathered at Apex Sports Zone for Journey to the Max, celebrating 25 years of Journey events that bring corporate and individual donors together to advance health care in our region.

HONORING PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS AWARENESS MONTH
Last October, during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Lima Memorial Health System associates and community members came together for A Time to Remember, a campaign honoring lives lost too soon. The campaign supports the Ryan & Robin Elephant Fund, established through the Lima Memorial Foundation to provide comfort to grieving families.
When a loss happens, the fund ensures families receive a remembrance basket that includes a plush baby elephant, handmade blanket, Recognition of Life certificate and healing resources. Each item serves as a lasting tribute, honoring every life, no matter how brief, ensuring they are lovingly remembered.
Memorial contributions, the Loving Memory Memorial, Coins for Comfort and a raffle reflected a shared commitment to supporting one another. Together, these gifts ensure families are never alone in their time of loss. The Lima Memorial Foundation invites you to help honor little lives and provide comfort to grieving families through the Ryan & Robin Elephant Fund. HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN’S HEALTH
The Lima Memorial Foundation’s Emerging Philanthropists hosted INSIGHT, offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Women’s Health Center at Lima Memorial Medical Park.
Guests toured the mammography suite, DEXA scan area and radiation oncology department, and heard from radiologist Dr. Weyer, who explained the journey from mammogram to biopsy and breast cancer treatment. The experience provided a meaningful glimpse into the coordinated, compassionate care women receive close to home.
Attendees also visited the YOUnique Wig Boutique, where free wigs are available to support women experiencing hair loss during treatment, a simple yet powerful example of patient-centered care.
A highlight of the evening was the recently upgraded open MRI, made possible through donor generosity. Designed with comfort in mind, the open MRI reduces anxiety, accommodates a wider range of patients and expands access to advanced diagnostic imaging in our region.
The evening concluded with an informal Q&A featuring providers, imaging technicians and members of the executive team, allowing guests to ask questions and gain deeper insight into the care delivered every day.
INSIGHT served as a meaningful reminder that philanthropic support helps ensure women in our community have access to high-quality, compassionate care when they need it most.

The Emerging Philanthropists Committee is comprised of community advocates with an interest in supporting local health care at Lima Memorial through philanthropic gifts of time, talent and treasure.

FINDING THE LIGHT: ATHENA’S JOURNEY OF COURAGE AND HOPE
At just 29 years old, Athena Long never expected to hear the words, “You have breast cancer.” After discovering a painful lump during a breast self-exam, she trusted her instincts and scheduled an appointment at the Lima Memorial Women's Health Center. Imaging revealed two nodules, and within days, the Women’s Health Center team quickly connected her with the care and support she needed, including services from the Breast and Cervical Cancer Project.
Athena began her treatment journey in the care of Dr. Darlene Weyer, whose calm presence brought comfort during this overwhelming time. Supported by her mother, Athena faced intensive chemotherapy with remarkable courage. When hair loss became inevitable, she embraced it, collecting colorful wigs and choosing positivity amid difficulty.
In January 2024, Athena received life-changing news: the cancer had significantly shrunk, was fully removed and her lymph nodes were clear. Today, Athena is healthy and thriving in her role as a dispatcher for Shawnee Township. Inspired by her journey, her co-workers raised funds to support the Lima Memorial Foundation Hope Fund and the annual Hope Garden Celebration to help remind other patients they are not alone in their cancer journey.
Athena’s story carries a powerful reminder that early detection can truly save lives, and having trusted care close to home makes a meaningful difference.

FINDING STRENGTH ON THE JOURNEY FORWARD: Susan Brubaker's Story
When Susan Brubaker learned she had breast cancer in August 2025, the diagnosis came as a shock. Faithful with her annual mammograms, she had undergone a biopsy years earlier that proved benign. This time was different. Follow-up imaging at Lima Memorial Health System Women’s Health Center confirmed Susan had Stage I, Grade III breast cancer – aggressive. “I got it early,” Susan shared, a phrase that became a steady source of reassurance as she moved forward.
Her treatment plan included a partial mastectomy followed by 20 radiation treatments over four weeks. Early on, Susan met with Debi Pohlman, LMHS social worker, and was introduced to Stephanie, who would become her patient navigator. This was support she embraced immediately, knowing from her husband Bob’s long journey through a stroke and multiple cancer diagnoses that she did not want to face this road alone.
Through determination and resilience, Bob rebuilt his strength and independence step by step. This hard-won recovery inspired Susan and him to set an audacious goal: to cycle across the country and share their story of how to never give up. This unyielding spirit, along with support from the Lima Memorial Family, would carry Susan through her own cancer journey.

Living in Van Wert, the nearly 70-mile round trip to appointments added up quickly. Gas cards eased that burden, allowing Susan to focus on healing. For more than 20 years, David Cottrell lived with heart disease—and later, type II diabetes. Managing both conditions became overwhelming, leaving him frustrated and unsure how to move forward. That changed when his cardiologist, Dr. Pamela Gardner, referred him to the Lima Memorial Comprehensive Health Center (CHC), a program made possible through generous community support of the Lima Memorial Foundation.
The CHC brings together coordinated care, education, medication management and nutrition guidance for patients with complex, chronic conditions. For David, that team-based approach made all the difference. “Going to the CHC is what’s made me able to live a pretty normal life,” he shared.
With support from nurse practitioner Jamie Verhoff, clinical pharmacist Ross Ellerbrock and his trusted cardiologist, David gained confidence in managing his health. “They listen. They involve me. They treat me with respect,” he said. “They helped me enjoy life again.”
Today, David is thriving, painting nearly every day, spending time with his family and traveling with his wife. “I feel good. Really good,” he said. “I’m living my life.”
Because of donor support, the Comprehensive Health Center continues to change lives and helps patients like David rediscover strength, confidence and joy.

For more than 16 years, Steven A. Romey has been a steady and trusted champion of the Lima Memorial Foundation, playing a meaningful role in shaping its growth and strength. What began as a small five-member volunteer fundraising effort evolved into a thriving organization supported by hundreds of donors, volunteers and community partners, with Steve offering his thoughtful leadership every step of the way.
A passionate advocate for disciplined stewardship and strategic leadership, Steve believes that local philanthropy should fuel local excellence. During his tenure with the Lima Memorial Foundation, donor support has helped bring transformative healthcare advancements to our communities, including a Level II Special Care Nursery, robotic-assisted surgical technology, an expanded ICU and rehabilitation services, enhanced cardiac and imaging capabilities and vital infection prevention improvements during COVID-19. These investments have strengthened care close to home and improved outcomes for families across our region.
Steve has served on the Lima Memorial Foundation Board, as well as the Finance, Executive and 1899 Society Committees, helping guide thoughtful planning and long-term sustainability that ensures the Foundation is positioned for continued success.
His hope is simple: that others will feel inspired to step forward, lead and invest in the future of health care in our community. Steve has demonstrated that when community leaders pair generosity with vision and accountability, we can achieve extraordinary outcomes, delivering world-class care without losing its local heart.

JOE’S MIRACLE... FROM HEART ATTACK TO HEALING – CLOSE TO HOME
In the early morning hours of a Thursday in November 2025,Lima Memorial Volunteer Joe Landwehr felt a sudden, crushing pain in his chest, unlike anything he had ever experienced. For days, he had been dealing with what he believed were routine asthma symptoms. But this was different. Joe knew immediately something was wrong. Frightened and short of breath, Joe rushed to the Lima Memorial Emergency Center. “I got to the ER and literally threw myself across the counter,” Joe recalls. “They asked what was going on, and all I could say was, ‘Heart attack!’’’
Within minutes, his fears were confirmed, and Joe was experiencing a heart attack. He was rushed to the catheterization lab, where his care team, led by Dr. Zane W.M. Dean, explained each step of the procedure and quickly went to work. Doctors discovered a 100% blockage in one of his arteries, an obstruction that could have been fatal without immediate treatment.

Because advanced diagnostic tools, equipment and life-saving technology were available locally at Lima Memorial, many made possible through generous donor support, Joe received swift, expert care without ever leaving his community. Less than 24 hours after arriving at the Emergency Center, Joe was home. One week later, he returned to volunteering at Lima Memorial.
“I’ve told everyone it’s a miracle,” Joe says. “I shouldn’t be here.”
Today, Joe continues his recovery through cardiac rehabilitation three times a week, using state-of-the-art equipment funded by the Lima Memorial Foundation. The program has been essential to his healing and renewed strength. “That’s why miracles like this happen,” Joe shares. “If the equipment and care weren’t here, the outcome would be very different.”
Grateful for the compassion, expertise and trust he experienced with the Lima Memorial team, Joe chose to make a gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation through the Grateful Patient and Family Program. This gift was made to honor his caregivers and help ensure others receive the same exceptional care, close to home.
Joe’s story is a powerful reminder that when community generosity and advanced medicine come together, lives are saved, and miracles happen.

HELPING HANDS & PAWS
For Robert and Denise Woodruff, serving others has always been rooted in faith and community. Before becoming Lima Memorial Volunteers, their connection to LMHS began through Northpark Community Church just behind the hospital.
Through their church, the Woodruffs organized meaningful acts of kindness like Christmas carolers, Easter baskets and support for the Children’s Developmental Center of Lima, creating a natural bridge to Lima Memorial.
Denise’s connection runs deeper. Born at Lima Memorial and a fourth-generation associate, she spent decades in health care before retiring. “I planned to come back and volunteer,” she shares. “I’ve always considered this my hospital.”
Robert, originally from North Carolina, now serves as a care pastor at Northpark, walking and supporting people through life’s challenges. Together, they realized their shared calling could extend directly to patients. “We thought we would be a good chaplain team,” Robert says.
As volunteer chaplains, the Woodruffs offer a listening ear, prayer when welcomed and added support. “Talking to people, hearing their pain, giving them hope and brightening their day is what it’s about,” Robert explains. Denise adds, “After we pray with them, you can often see a peace that wasn’t there before.”
Their outreach expanded when their Pet Partners-certified therapy dog, Jett Li, joined the team, bringing comfort and calm across the hospital. “He was born for this,” Denise says with a smile.
For the Woodruffs, Lima Memorial is more than a place to serve. It is where faith, compassion and community come together — one patient, one prayer and one tail wag at a time.

A LEGACY OF CARE, PRESERVED FOR GENERATIONS
For more than a century, the Lima Memorial Hospital School of Nursing stood as a cornerstone of compassionate, skilled care, shaping not only nurses, but the future of health care in our community. Founded in 1904 with just four students and guided by a dedicated medical teaching staff, the school quickly built a reputation rooted in excellence, service and the principles of scientific nursing inspired by Florence Nightingale.
Over seven decades, the School of Nursing graduated more than 1,165 nurses, each carrying forward a legacy of professionalism and heart. Though the school eventually closed, its impact endured through partnerships with local colleges and a continued commitment to healthcare education.
In 2025, the School of Nursing Alumnae made a thoughtful, forward-looking decision to entrust their remaining funds to the Lima Memorial Foundation. As time continues to pass for the alumnae group, this generous gift will ensure their mission can continue beyond their time together. Through this endowment, the Foundation will distribute annual scholarships to area students pursuing healthcare careers, ensuring the School of Nursing Alumnae legacy lives on through education and opportunity.
This act of stewardship reflects the very values the School of Nursing instilled in planning with purpose, caring for others and investing in the next generation. Through this gift, their legacy of care will continue for years to come.

AGAINST THE ODDS Kevin's Story
Kevin Edwards’s life changed in an instant while grilling on his front porch. A sudden seizure led to a devastating diagnosis: glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. After tumor removal, he was given an estimated six to seven months to live. But thanks to advanced technology and compassionate, skilled providers, Kevin was given the best possible chance to defy the odds.
A cornerstone of Kevin’s care was the advanced medical technology available at Lima Memorial. The LMHS team was able to plan, perform and follow through on precise treatments thanks to equipment made possible by Lima Memorial Foundation supporters.
“Kevin had the confidence to stay here and let me guide him,”
Dr. Jeffrey Lobel, LMHS Neurosurgeon, states. “Doing surgery like I did on Mr. Edwards would not be possible without the support of our healthcare system and the belief that we can offer technology that had not been offered for many years in Lima.”
Now, more than four years after his diagnosis, Kevin continues to live life to the fullest, a testament to his strength, spirit and the collective impact of a community united to advance life-saving technology in our region.
“They give someone a glimmer of hope,” shares Kevin. Kevin’s wife, Jackie, adds, “If it wouldn’t have been for the people at Lima Memorial, we would not be where we are today. They did what they needed to do, and he’s still here with us.”

Lima Memorial proudly hosted the second annual Milestones in Motion 5K Run and Walk, bringing together associates, families and community members of all ages. This family-friendly event celebrated movement and connection while advancing a cause that directly impacts patients in need.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Lima Memorial Foundation’s Samaritan Fund, which provides vital support for patients facing financial barriers at the end of their hospital stay. Through the generosity of participants and donors, the Samaritan Fund helps ensure access to essential medications, transportation and necessities, promoting dignity, healing and a safer transition home.
