FOCUSING FORWARD Dear Friends of the Foundation, As I reflect on 2021, the word “remarkable” comes to mind, especially as I think about all of the amazing healthcare teams who have worked tirelessly to care for individuals in the midst of an unrelenting pandemic. It has been remarkable to see Lima Memorial, our locally-owned health system, continue to meet these serious challenges while simultaneously addressing the evolving healthcare needs of our community.

One need involved addressing the exponential increase in demand for inpatient dialysis treatment.

Our donor community united to address this critical need to expand dialysis services for hospitalized patients in kidney failure. Together with the Lima Memorial Foundation, we raised $1.2 million to establish a dedicated Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center to care for these patients. Remarkable!

In this edition of Focus, you will find a year filled with remarkable achievements, all made possible by our dedicated donor community. As you explore the pages of Focus, you can be proud of the investment you have made in advancing the health of our community.

A LOOK AHEAD Dear Friends, There is no doubt 2021 continued to bring health systems more challenging and unprecedented moments − moments we hoped would be behind us by now. However, I hold on to the defining moments that shaped our delivery of care and kept us moving forward for you. It is moments like these that have always made me proud to be part of the Lima Memorial Family. Through it all, our donor community stood alongside us. You helped us move forward with your trust, understanding and genuine care. I invite you to share in our health system’s great moments from this past year by viewing our 2021 Year in Review.

This year promises to bring its own special moments. Thanks to our donor community, critically ill patients experiencing kidney failure are now benefiting from a dedicated treatment area that brings together exceptional expertise and technology for the best possible outcome. This spring, we look forward to giving our patients and visitors a warm welcome with the Lima Memorial Welcome Center grand opening. This center was specially designed to add comfort and convenience to the patient, family and visitor experience. Added amenities will include a boutique-style gift shop and a local favorite — Biggby Coffee!

Always determined to improve the quality of life in our community, our team set forth strategic priorities this year to focus on chronic disease management. With six in ten Americans living with at least one chronic disease, it is essential to provide local access to expert guidance, comprehensive resources and advanced technology that will help these individuals learn to successfully self-monitor and manage their condition.

We have entered into this year with great optimism and are inspired by the many achievements carried out by the Lima Memorial Family and our donor community. As an established leader in providing the most advanced level of care in the region, Lima Memorial cares for the sickest of patients. These patients often require inpatient renal dialysis as part of their life-preserving treatment plan. In fact, the rate of renal failure is escalating in hospitalized patients, with Lima Memorial experiencing a 68% increase in inpatient renal dialysis treatments over the last five years.

To address this critical need, the Lima Memorial Foundation united our community to raise $1.2 million to establish a dedicated Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center. Here, advanced renal services are provided in a private, family-centered environment with unparalleled quality, safety and comfort. The new center opened this March.

Zack’s Journey

It was Christmas of 2010 when Zack Voll discovered his kidneys were failing. After receiving a kidney transplant the next year, he thought his life-altering journey was behind him. However, in 2019, Zack’s kidney began to show signs of rejection.

Ultimately, Zack required life-preserving dialysis while he awaited a new kidney.

Zack placed his trust in Lima Memorial for treatment. This journey would be different as he now had two young boys to consider and the added stress of dialysis.

Thankfully, Zack received his second transplant in 2020 and credits Lima Memorial for saving his life. And, when he learned about the Lima Memorial Foundation’s 2021 Funding Priority, he enthusiastically chose to become an ambassador. He felt compelled to advocate for this critical need to benefit future patients and their families.

Like Zack, patients receiving renal dialysis are often faced with a rollercoaster of health issues and emotions. Many will require hospitalization. These critically ill patients are in a fight for their life.

After 35 dialysis treatments, Zack received his second kidney transplant on August 24, 2020. It was because of the selfless gift of organ donation from his friend, Isaac, that Zack was able to continue living an enriched life.

Last fall, the Lima Memorial Foundation launched Project Illuminate. This art installation shined a light on the Foundation’s funding priority to bring a state-of-the-art Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center to our community. Inspiring messages from patients, families and caregivers were illuminated in bottles and placed on the waters of the Medical Park. This artistic display symbolized our community coming together to bring life-preserving care to critically ill patients in kidney failure.

The group completed a renovation project within the Women’s Health Center’s Hope Garden at the Lima Memorial Medical Park, commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Our donors united to bring advanced resources and the latest imaging and diagnostic technology to the region.

Thanks to tremendous generosity, more than $750,000 was raised, and our region now has access to advanced cancer-fighting technology that detects cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

This $2.5 million investment has transformed the way inpatient rehabilitation is delivered to patients throughout our region, providing local access to the highest quality of care. MOVING FORWARD WITH

TIM SCHMIESING

It was on Christmas Day 2021 when Tim Schmiesing of Anna, Ohio, was admitted to the nearest hospital for treatment of COVID-19. After five days, Tim returned home with some weakness, a symptom his family attributed to his battle with the virus. However, after he fell twice at home, Tim’s family knew something was not quite right.

Tim was ultimately diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing muscle weakness and even paralysis. Within days, Tim became paralyzed from the waist down and experienced debilitating weakness in his arms.

Tim was determined to reclaim his active lifestyle as a diesel mechanic and steer farmer. He and his wife, MarNell, immediately began looking for facilities to begin intense rehabilitation. “Columbus had rehab options, but it would have been an hour-and-ahalf drive, and MarNell would have had to stay in a hotel,” explains Tim. The couple was thankful to find advanced rehabilitation so close to home at Lima Memorial’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Center.

Within four weeks, Tim was able to walk a thousand steps with a walker and continuously improve in his movement. He progressed to walking down the hallway with a cane.

Tim and his wife credit his recovery to the Lima Memorial therapy team and advanced therapeutic equipment like the Zero-G Dynamic Body Weight Support System to get him back on his feet again.

Through generous donor support, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center was established in 2020 and now helps patients like Tim reclaim their lives.

Tim’s prognosis was grim, but he was determined to exceed all expectations. Tim placed his trust in his exceptional care team who leveraged state-of-the-art therapeutic technology to get him back on his feet.

“They put me in the Zero-G a lot, and that helped me,” says Tim. “It was wonderful, and I enjoyed being in it.

I felt very safe.”

Noah Brennan set out to be one of the youngest Boy Scouts to earn the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout. This wasn’t his only ambitious goal. The 13-year-old Shawnee Middle School student chose a service project with great magnitude - to transform an open courtyard at Lima Memorial into a healthy and serene space for patients, visitors, associates and volunteers to enjoy.

PLANTING THE S E E DS O F S E R E N I T Y

Noah developed a comprehensive plan for the project. With his plan in hand, he designed the garden’s layout; partnered with the Foundation to raise $12,600 for the project and organized the volunteer efforts of fellow Boy Scouts. In total, 290 service hours were dedicated to developing the Lima Memorial Serenity Garden. The beautiful space includes unique seating areas and a variety of plants and flowers.

“The opportunity to transform the courtyard into something positive is what inspired me to do this,” says Noah. “The area is dedicated to past, present and future employees and volunteers of Lima Memorial.”

We are grateful to Noah for choosing Lima Memorial for this incredible project and thankful for the many donors and Scouts who supported this young leader’s vision to create a space of healing beyond the walls of the hospital.

Cody Smith is no stranger to the Lima Memorial Family. He was born and raised in Lima, and his mother was a long-time Respiratory Therapist at Lima Memorial.

After attending college and returning to the area, Cody wanted to give back to the community that supported him growing up.

He found that opportunity by becoming a Lima Memorial Foundation Ambassador and Development Committee member.

“Everything the Lima Memorial Foundation does directly impacts the community,” explains Cody. “All the fundraising is going to the health system to provide top-notch care, and that was why I wanted to become involved.”

Cody has a great concern for the accessibility of quality, local health care in his community.

And, as a husband and father, he feels confident that great care is available close to home at Lima Memorial. According to Cody, “It provides peace of mind knowing there is a place to go where there are extremely talented physicians and care teams who are going to do everything they can for you. There are very rare instances where you can’t have something done here.”

Cody is a Certified Professional Accountant and Principal at Rea & Associates. He and his wife, Missy, reside in Lima with their two children, Cameron and Peyton.

P E D I AT R I C T H E R A PY WISHES GRANTED Walking up the stairs or even picking up a toy may be normal milestones for many children, but for a child with a neuromuscular condition, these tasks can be next to impossible. Thanks to a $35,000 grant from the National Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society Children’s Medical Fund, Lima Memorial’s Developmental Pediatric Therapy program purchased advanced therapy equipment to benefit children in our region.

“One of the things that stood out to us was that Lima Memorial is nearly an hour to an hour-anda-half away from the nearest children’s hospital,” states Nikki Burns, Children’s Medical Fund Grant Committee Co-Chair. “If they don’t have to travel outside the area, parents are going to be more likely to get their child to the therapy sessions.”

Children with neurological disorders, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or other neuromuscular conditions, will now have access to a Universal Exercise Unit, which utilizes a system of

pulleys and straps to allow the child to learn new and corrective patterns of movement.

The grant funding will also be used to purchase specialized indoor playground equipment and provide assistive communication devices to verbally-limited children.

“We are grateful to be the beneficiary of this generous grant," says Tony Rampulla, Lima Memorial Physical Therapy Manager. “The new equipment and technology will help us greatly improve the function of children during a critical period of their development, ultimately improving their quality of life.”

Many in the community know Dr. Eric Miller as their trusted podiatrist. Others may recognize him as a champion of youth sports. We all know him as an individual dedicated to both family and the well-being of the Lima community.

Originally from Pittsburg, Dr. Miller settled in the Lima area and embraced it as his home in 1998. After being in private practice for many years, Dr. Miller joined Lima Memorial Physicians and has since been able to bring our patients advanced procedures typically found only in university settings.

Along with providing his patients excellent podiatric care, Dr. Miller also invests in his patients through gifts to the Foundation. Each year, he has remained an avid supporter and witness to what the Foundation has accomplished. “I get to see the physical results of my support every day,” says Dr. Miller. “It just motivates me to give more and help those in our community be the best they can be when it comes to their health.” Dr. Miller has also instilled this mindset of servanthood in his children. He explains, “I teach my kids that we all have the same duty to be empathetic and compassionate towards others and their needs.”

MAKING WAY FOR MAMMOGRAPHY IN WAPAK

M E E T D R . S U S A N K AU F M A N Having easy access to local lifesaving screenings, such as mammograms, can often be taken for granted, but it means more to some patients than one may think.

In Dr. Susan Kaufman’s role as a primary care provider in Wapakoneta, she knows many patients who face daily obstacles to health care. She will attest that the Foundation’s efforts in 2021 to bring 3D mammography services to the Wapakoneta community has made a profound impact. “I have already identified patients who required biopsy and close follow up.

Getting screened early is how we prevent metastatic disease. It’s a critical gap the Foundation helped to fill,” says Dr. Kaufman.

Thanks to the support of our donor community, including Dr. Kaufman, many more precious lives will be saved and families will remain intact because of early detection.

BECOMING A PART OF SOMETHING GREATER Each year, Lima Memorial associates come together to support Living the Spirit, an associate-driven campaign focused on helping one another and advancing the health of our community through gifts to the Foundation. While Living the Spirit gives associates an opportunity to help support our patients, programs and services, it also allows them to help each other through the Associate Relief Fund.

When Shari Kemper and her family experienced a devastating fire that consumed her family’s home, it felt like the world was collapsing. Thankfully, everyone was safe. However, as Shari stood with her family and watched the windows be boarded

up, she couldn’t help but think about how they were going to move forward.

Shari was touched when she found out she was a recipient of the Associate Relief Fund. “It was just nice to know that everyone had our back,” Shari expresses. The support helped her through a most difficult time.

While Shari was a recipient of the fund, she is also a Living the Spirit Champion and has been for years.

“Every penny helps. As long as you are giving, you know you are helping,” says Shari. “That’s why we got into health care to begin with…because we wanted to help people. That’s why I give.”

LIVING THE SPIRIT CHAMPIONS OF PHILANTHROPY Each day, our associates perform amazing acts of kindness at Lima Memorial that stretch far beyond their daily roles. In 2021, 65 departmental champions volunteered to lead Living the Spirit. The result was an outstanding $290,000 pledged to the Foundation in support of our patients, fellow associates and our community.

THORA D AV I S A Tribute to Friends Thora Davis has spent 40 years serving the Lima community, first as a psychiatric nurse and now as one of our treasured volunteers.

“I’ve met a lot of wonderful people at Lima Memorial and great volunteers,” Thora shares.

“We’re all here because we want to be, so it’s really a nice thing to do.”

health care. To join in this mission, Thora began giving back in her own meaningful way. “People I knew started passing away, so I gave a gift to the Foundation in their memory,” says Thora.

“The first time I made a donation, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a personal phone call from the Foundation expressing their thanks.”

Thora has volunteered in a number of areas during her 20 years with the LMHS Family, including the Auxiliary Café and our Outpatient Laboratory where she now greets and registers patients before they receive their lab work. “It’s a friendly and helpful atmosphere,” says Thora.

“People come in, and they are well taken care of right away.”

Thora has since continued with annual support to the Foundation. “It’s nice to know where my gift is going,” Thora expresses. “It actually encourages me to give more knowing where it will be used.”

If you speak with anyone who knows or has worked with Ruth Wall, you will discover the immense impact she has made on her Lima Memorial Family and community. She is a person with genuine compassion and a deep commitment to Lima Memorial and our patients.

I CONSIDER LIMA MEMORIAL AN EXTENSION OF MY FAMILY. Whether it be working at the forefront of opening the Family Birth Center in 1997 or developing strategies to advance nursing care at Lima Memorial as Vice President of Nursing, Ruth always maintained impeccable integrity and had the patients' best interest at heart. Even after her 30-year nursing career and retirement from Lima Memorial, Ruth remained committed to our hospital and the community by serving on our Lima Memorial Health System Board of Trustees for five years.

There is no doubt that Ruth has left an enduring Florence Nightingale-like legacy of compassionate leadership.

“I am thankful for the many opportunities to grow, work with incredible people, mentor and be mentored,” expresses Ruth about her time at Lima Memorial.

Today, Ruth’s Great Care lives on through her philanthropic efforts. To Ruth, Lima Memorial is an important part of her life and family. “They invested so much in me,” Ruth expresses. She chose to do the same by joining the Lima Memorial Foundation Heritage Society. As a member of the Heritage Society, Ruth has made her intentions known to continue her support of Lima Memorial through her will. This ensures her legacy continues beyond her lifetime.
