FILLING THE GAP Helping our patients does not end when they leave our hospital. There are many hurdles a patient may face after a hospital stay, and that is why the Samaritan Fund was created by the Lima Memorial Foundation. The fund helps patients fill medications they may not otherwise be able to afford. Others simply need transportation home upon discharge. This year alone, more than 300 patients have received much-needed support through the Samaritan Fund.

AN ELEPHANT NEVER FORGETS GIVING PATIENTS HOPE Years ago, parents-to-be picked out names for their unborn baby - Ryan for a boy and Robin for a girl. Sadly, these expectant parents experienced a devastating loss of their baby.

The grieving couple wanted to ensure families who suffer the loss of an infant would leave Lima Memorial with something special to remember their child. A stuffed elephant was symbolically chosen because an elephant never forgets.

These parents partnered with the Lima Memorial Foundation to establish the Ryan and Robin Elephant Fund. Each family experiencing a loss is given a plush elephant, blanket, Recognition of Life certificate and other comfort items. Gifts designated to support this fund help parents never forget and ensure every life, no matter how short, is recognized and acknowledged.

A cancer diagnosis begins a journey of strength, will and determination. It can also begin a journey filled with uncertainty and obstacles. Unfortunately, some patients encounter barriers that make it even harder to engage in the fight against cancer. This is why the Hope Fund exists - to provide resources when help is needed.

One such resource is Lima Memorial’s YOUnique Wig Boutique. Thanks to donations to the Hope Fund, this boutique is able to offer an invaluable benefit to patients by providing wigs, hats and scarves free of charge to women facing hair loss during treatment.

INPATIENT REHABILITATION TRANSFORMATION

Through the generosity of friends of the Foundation like you, Lima Memorial is nearing its goal of raising $2.5 million to completely transform the way inpatient rehabilitation is delivered for our region. With your support, we are confident we will reach this goal.

Design is underway with construction set to begin in early 2020. The transformation will create a family-centered, community-based environment, complete with innovative therapeutic technology unique to our region.

The activity hub of the center will be the therapy gymnasium, which will be fully equipped with a wide range of innovative technology, including a body weight support system. These advancements will help patients take their new first step sooner.

Donations to the project are already making an impact on our patients with the purchase of two pieces of invaluable equipment.

The Barihab Platform allows patients to practice sit-to-stand motions and standing balance activities in a safe environment. Studies have shown patients who have experienced therapy on the Barihab Platform recover faster than more traditional approaches to therapy.

The Car Transfer Simulator allows patients to practice car transfer skills in the safety of our clinical setting. While compact in size, this simulator comes with a height adjustment system to mimic almost any size vehicle and is designed to make car transfer training realistic and safe.

The design team has sought input from physicians, therapists, nurses and former inpatient rehabilitation patients and their families to create this state-of-the-art center for our region. The center is set to be complete by December 2020. The Lima Memorial Foundation held Achieve events this year to celebrate the accomplishments of patients who have completed inpatient rehabilitation. Patients and their guests were able to preview plans for the upcoming transformation and provide valuable feedback to incorporate into its design.

For past patient and Lima Memorial Volunteer Becky Martz, attending Achieve and reconnecting with her care team inspired Becky to support the program that put her back on her feet. “Coming to Achieve and hearing all of the plans made me so excited because I know the patients need this,” Becky commented. “I chose to make a donation to this project because I know this is needed and that the transformation will be wonderful.”

A SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE: INSIGHT WITH ASHLEY KENNEDY The Lima Memorial Foundation hosts Insight events to give community members a behind-the-scenes look at Lima Memorial and the impact support to the Foundation has on Lima Memorial Health System as a whole.

For Ashley Kennedy and her husband, Nick, attending Insight gave a new perspective and understanding of what Lima Memorial brings to local health care.

At the event, Ashley and Nick witnessed many of Lima Memorial’s innovative technologies and services in action. Their visit included observing a robotic surgery, learning about and seeing advanced diagnostic lung cancer technology, hearing about new heart rhythm management procedures and touring the simulation and education laboratory. “It was incredible,” Ashley remarked. “Nick and I talked for a long time about it afterwards. It was so incredible seeing something like this happening in (our) town!”

Stepping inside of Lima Memorial was an eye-opening experience for Ashley. “Our biggest takeaway was that Lima Memorial is where we want to be if something were to happen to us or our kids. It’s the place where I honestly feel like we would get the best care,” Ashley said. “Lima Memorial’s technology is top-notch, and their concern lies in the care of the patient and the community.”

THE HEART OF COMMUNITY ACTION In 2017, the Foundation rallied community support to bring the most sophisticated electrophysiology (heart rhythm management) capabilities to the greater Lima region, in partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Since then, the hearts of our community have been benefiting from the most advanced heart rhythm management procedures and cardiac imaging and support systems. One of these hearts belongs to St. Marys resident, Dennis Stienecker.

After experiencing symptoms of an erratic heartbeat, Dennis underwent a right atrial flutter ablation to restore his normal heart rhythm. “I was very concerned about the erratic heartbeat that I had, and the medication to treat it was also a big concern for me, too,” Dennis stated.

“We decided to try the new treatment to see if it would eliminate the problem, and it did!”

To Dennis, the heart rhythm technology brought high-tech and high-quality services close to home.

Without local access to this technology, Dennis would have faced multiple hurdles to get the treatment he needed. “I would have had to travel to Columbus and stay overnight in a completely unknown environment,” Dennis expressed.

“There would have been more anxiety involved for me and my family.”

“It’s great that the community is looking out for their local citizens and bringing quality services closer to home,” Dennis said. Since his procedure, Dennis has been feeling his best and is now off his medication.

Lima Memorial is proud to have the most trusted heart team in the region. Thanks to community support, our physicians have access to advanced tools and technology to benefit patients like Dennis.

JOINING THE MOVEMENT AGAINST LUNG CANCER

Former Wapakoneta Mayor Donald Wittwer joined Lynn Carpenter, Foundation Executive Director; Mike Swick, Lima Memorial President and CEO; and Karen Tullis, owner of Eagles Landing, Neil Armstrong’s boyhood home, during a special Insight event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing.

Through the support of countless businesses and individuals during the Foundation’s Journey to the Moon in Wapakoneta, Lima Memorial was able to introduce innovative diagnostic lung cancer technology. That investment has been saving lives ever since through the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

One generous contributor was Wapakoneta’s former mayor, Donald Wittwer. He shared a unique treasure with the Lima Memorial Foundation, an autographed photo of Neil Armstrong.

“I had received autographed Neil Armstrong photos from NASA, due to my role in organizing Neil’s homecoming parade in 1969 following the lunar landing. When the Foundation needed donations for their fundraiser, I told them that I would be happy to donate,” Mr. Wittwer explained. “I had lost my mother to cancer, and the only equipment they had back then was x-rays.”

Establishing state-of-the-art lung cancer diagnostic services in the region would mean much more to Mr. Wittwer in the near future. After dealing with an unknown illness for some time, Mr. Wittwer’s wife had been admitted to the hospital and underwent testing.

She was ultimately diagnosed with lung cancer. It was because of the equipment the Foundation brought to Lima Memorial that Mr. Wittwer and his wife were able to get answers. While Mr. Wittwer’s wife unfortunately passed away late last year, he was grateful to have been given precious time with her.

“Having this equipment close to home means the world to people in our community, like the Wittwers,” Dr. Jason Stienecker, Lima Memorial Pulmonary Critical Care Physician, said. “When you already have an illness to worry about, traveling to get the answers and care you need only adds to the stress and makes the illness worse.

Being able to provide these services close to home and reduce that burden means a lot.”

Donald Wittwer has since donated several priceless Neil Armstrong photos to the Foundation as a way to help the community move towards better health.

In fact, Dr. Stienecker has since become the proud owner of this historic keepsake when he had the winning bid at the Foundation’s Journey to the Red Carpet. According to Mr. Wittwer, “Lima Memorial puts a real effort into its Foundation and has been accomplishing great things. If I can share with the Foundation what I have to help in accomplishing these things, I feel very satisfied.”

When Carla Oberly was asked to provide her photography skills for the Lima Memorial Foundation’s Journey Gala in 2016, she understood it would be a fundraiser. What she wasn’t prepared for was the intense energy and phenomenal feeling of giving that comes from this premier event. Since then, Carla has been capturing photographs of the Journey guests year after year and donating to support the cause.

“The first year I took pictures at Journey, it was at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum when they were raising funds for new lung cancer equipment.

That struck home to me because my dad had lung and breathing issues,” Carla said. “I donated during the fund-a-need portion of the event because I wanted people to get the help they needed, and I knew, with this equipment, more people were going to benefit.”

To Carla, giving back is a part of who she is. “I just want to be a part of reaching out and helping people have a better quality of life.”

Each year, Lima Memorial supports local 4-H and FFA youth as they take projects to area county fairs. In many cases, proceeds raised from livestock auctions go towards these kids’ future college tuition.

This year, Allie, Landen and Logan Burke’s 4-H hogs were purchased by Lima Memorial Health System. As a thank you, the Burke kids invested in the health of our community by making a donation to the Lima Memorial Foundation. We are most grateful for the generosity of these future leaders.

AUSTIN SHERER

Austin Sherer’s first experience with Lima Memorial was when he was born, 31 years ago. More recently, it was with the birth of his first son in 2017. Earlier this year, Austin had another opportunity to visit the hospital when he received an invitation to Insight.

“Adam Rector, my good friend and also a member of the Foundation Board, invited me to the Foundation’s Insight event,” Austin explained. “It was really great to take a tour of Lima Memorial and see the surgical robots in action. The new rehabilitation center renovation is going to be hugely beneficial to the community as well.”

Witnessing what Lima Memorial does behind the scenes to provide the best care to the community inspired Austin to give back to the cause. “I understand that it’s up to individuals to give back to support healthcare advancements. It’s a great way for us to help others and help the community in the long term,” Austin stated.

“The biggest thing with Lima Memorial is that it’s a community-oriented hospital. It’s locally owned and operated. Bottom line, it’s one of the top-rated hospitals, and that’s really great to see.”

Lima Memorial associates stepped forward as Agents of Motion for this year’s Journey gala, making motion come alive through unique experiences at the event. Additionally, more than 150 associates came together to help create an exceptional experience for our guests by selflessly donating countless volunteer hours to the event.

CREATURES MAKE SECOND U.S. APPEARANCE AT JOURNEY IN MOTION

Guests at Journey in Motion were treated to a special appearance by acclaimed South African Puppeteer, Roger Titley’s whimsical animal creatures. Titley’s creatures debuted in the United States at Cleveland’s BorderLight International Theatre and Fringe Festival in June. The annual festival brings top-flight performers from abroad to present visionary international theatre and build cross-cultural understanding.

Titley’s animal creatures were an inspiring demonstration of the body’s wide scope of movement, as the creatures’ gestures and life-like expressions were driven by human puppeteers. Down to each hinging joint and flexing muscle, a life-size cheetah, ostrich, giraffe and elephant performed around and amongst the amazed guests.

RECOGNIZING PHILANTHROPY Each spring, the Lima Memorial Foundation hosts Ovation, an event celebrating those who believe in and are committed to advancing the health of the greater Lima region through gifts to our Foundation. Special awards are given to businesses and individuals who achieve milestone levels of giving.

The 2019 event was highlighted with a special tribute to the late Jim “Krack” Unverferth.

It was held at Moose Landing Country Club outside of Kalida, a place near and dear to the Unverferth family.

Jim was known for his remarkable philanthropic spirit that was rooted by a genuine love for people. He dedicated his life to his family, friendships, work family and community.

Jim and his wife, Joni, always put each other first and deeply valued the family unit and traditions. As president of HCF Management, Inc., Jim firmly believed that caring for the elderly is a privilege and challenge and encouraged his team to rise to the challenge each and every day.

Jim had a passion for being involved for the good of the community and had a vigor and intensity to lead individuals to a common goal. Jim shared Lima Memorial Foundation’s mission to support quality health care through philanthropy and firmly believed in investing in the health of family, friends and neighbors.

With a camera always in hand, Jim captured the essence of life. Dr. Seuss quoted, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” We believe Jim created value in every moment as he lived his life to the fullest and deeply enriched ours. We are grateful to be the beneficiary of Jim and his family’s steadfast support.

Jan is a tremendous advocate and ambassador for the Lima Memorial Foundation. As a long-time supporter of our Foundation, Jan chose to become more personally involved by joining our Foundation team as a volunteer last year. She has had a hand in so many of our projects, from Journey preparations and development of the 1899 Society welcome packet to being a voice of the donor at strategic planning sessions. MOVED TO GIVE Avid Lima Memorial volunteers, Bruce Campbell and Dorothy “DT” Thompson, are truly committed to doing good for their community. As volunteers, they have contributed more than 27,000 combined volunteer hours in almost every area of the hospital over time. More than that, Bruce and DT have also chosen to contribute annually to the Foundation.

When asked why they choose to support the Foundation, they offered a simple collective answer, “Lima Memorial does nothing but good for its patients and the community.”

For Bruce, retired President and CEO of Superior Credit Union, seeing the impact the Foundation has on the hospital and in the lives of patients is the number one reason why he has made annual gifts. “The reason I donate is I can see where it goes,” Bruce stated. “In other places, you might not know where proceeds are going; here, you can see exactly what they’re doing with it, and they’re doing good!”

THE MOVING POWER OF Each year, Lima Memorial associates come together to support Living the Spirit, an associate-driven campaign focused on supporting one another and the health of our community through philanthropic gifts. While Living the Spirit helps Lima Memorial’s patients, programs and services, it also allows associates to lift each other up in times of need through the Associate Relief Fund.

To Lima Memorial Associate Carrie Huelskamp, a gift from the Associate Relief Fund meant getting her daughter, Harper, the in-home therapy she needed to thrive. Harper courageously lives with Dravet Syndrome, also known as severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy. With this rare condition, Harper has hundreds of seizures a day and is unable to cope with heat, bright lights, loud noises, wind and the sun. “Harper doesn’t have the ability to do therapy in a hospital setting,” Carrie shared. “The gift really helped us to provide what she needed at home by being able to purchase some unique therapy items.”

The fact that her fellow associates supported the health of her daughter made Carrie feel even more of a connection to her Lima Memorial family. “It’s a very special privilege to be able to work in a place that does this for its associates because it goes to show our core values,” Carrie commented. “We’re all in the healthcare field to take care of other people, and I think the bigger picture here is that we are also taking care of each other.”

More than 1,200 Lima Memorial associates joined together to support one another and our community through their participation in the 2019 - 2020 Living the Spirit campaign.

Impressively, more than $250,000 was pledged.

• Individuals can contribute appreciated property, like securities or real estate, receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.

• Individuals who establish a life-income gift receive a tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the assets contributed, minus the present value of the income interest retained.

• If the gift is funded with appreciated property, individuals are not required to pay upfront capital gains tax on the transfer.

• Gifts payable to charity upon the donor’s death, like a bequest or a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account, are exempt from estate tax.

GROWING OUR GREAT CARE Earlier this year, Lima Memorial Health System announced a $30 million expansion and investment in the health of the greater Lima region. This investment will include a new Outpatient Diagnostic and Imaging Center, Welcome Center, Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and a Family Medicine & Walk-In Care Center in Wapakoneta. In addition, the health system opened its new cardiac area on the second floor of Professional Office Building III in July 2019.

“As a locally owned and operated health system, we are deeply invested in the health of our community,” Mike Swick, President and CEO of Lima Memorial Health System, stated. “This $30 million expansion will solidly position Lima Memorial to meet the needs of our patients and their families well into the future.”
