A CLEAR FOCUS
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
On behalf of the entire Foundation Board, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your unwavering support of local health care. In 2022, our donor community united to raise more than $1.94 million to realize meaningful advancements in health care that significantly impact lives in our community.
Your generous support has allowed the health system to launch a comprehensive Chronic Disease Management Program to remove barriers and drastically improve the quality of life for patients in our community living with chronic conditions. You can expect exciting updates this year as the program continues to evolve.
Along with celebrating growth, we also gathered to say goodbye to two faithful Lima Memorial Foundation Board members − James Meredith and Kermit Stroh. Their contributions to our community are immeasurable, and we join their family and friends in remembrance of their lives and enduring legacy of service.
The stories within FOCUS share dynamic ways in which your gifts are advancing local health care and providing convenient access to services for our patients. You can be proud of the investment you have made in the health of our community. I look forward to all we will accomplish as we continue to unite our family, friends and neighbors.
Thank you so much!

GREAT CARE. ALWAYS.
Dear Friends,
I am deeply humbled by our community’s steadfast support and continue to be inspired by our joint efforts to provide access to Great Care locally. Your gifts to our Foundation have been the catalyst to ensuring advanced technology, programs and services are available to our family, friends and neighbors.

It is an honor to hear the experiences of our patients and families. Undeniably, these testimonies and the generosity of our donor community have impacted every corner of our hospital. From the investment in our robotic surgery program more than a decade ago to the establishment of a dedicated Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center, our donors continue to place their confidence and trust in our health system, allowing us to bring innovative technology, services and resources to our region. For this, we are deeply appreciative.
Within the pages of FOCUS, we celebrate the impact of your support and introduce you to patients whose lives have been changed by your generosity. You are the reason medically fragile patients like Ottis are able to receive life-saving renal dialysis treatments and specialty care in a comfortable, supportive environment; recovering patients like Roosevelt have access to nutritional supplements vital to continued healing; and patients living with chronic conditions, like Sharron and Diana, experience the peace of mind that comes with virtual monitoring and seamless care coordination. As we continue to expand access to local health care, we look forward to collaborating with local agencies to serve the most vulnerable patients.
Philanthropy has been and will continue to be a driving force in transforming the way Lima Memorial provides Great Care. I extend my heartfelt thanks to you for your faith in our services and your continued support.

Sincerely,
Michael D. Swick President & CEO Lima Memorial Health System
COMMITTEE
Janice von der Embse CHAIRAs an established leader in providing the most advanced level of care in the region, Lima Memorial cares for the sickest of patients. These patients often require inpatient renal dialysis as part of their life-preserving treatment plan. In fact, the rate of renal failure is escalating in hospitalized patients, with Lima Memorial experiencing a 68% increase in inpatient renal dialysis treatments over the last five years.
To address this critical need, the Lima Memorial Foundation united our community to raise $1.2 million to establish a dedicated Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center. Here, advanced renal services are provided in a private, family-centered environment with unparalleled quality, safety and comfort. The new center opened in 2022.
Living, Laughing and Caring with Ottis Marshall
Odds are, if Ottis Marshall is receiving dialysis, there is a smile on the face of every person in the unit. Whether he is making lighthearted jokes from across the room, or making up silly nicknames for the dialysis team members, Ottis will leave everyone chuckling. For more than two years, Ottis has made it his mission to bring this kind of joy to his fellow patients and the associates he credits with saving his life.
“If it wasn’t for them,” Ottis shares, referring to the medical team he spends time with weekly, “I wouldn’t be here.”
Ottis understands firsthand that managing a chronic condition can be overwhelming, and he is determined to maintain a positive outlook. It was only two years ago during a quiet evening at home that Ottis told his daughter he was not feeling like himself. Shortly after, Ottis was admitted to Lima Memorial where he learned his kidneys were failing due to diabetes. Upon discharge, Ottis began his dialysis journey — a journey that is not always easy. Those in need of renal dialysis are often living with significant health challenges and need specialized care and monitoring. Even more, patients requiring dialysis frequently experience fluctuation in their physical and emotional health, which can create feelings of instability. Ottis has had many inpatient stays at Lima Memorial, and for many patients like him, dialysis is essential to sustaining his life.
Through generous donor support, Lima Memorial’s new Inpatient Renal Dialysis Treatment Center was established in 2022 and now provides patients like Ottis with life-saving care in a safe and private setting. Having the new center, along with outpatient dialysis, has provided Ottis with the comprehensive care he needs and deserves.

CHARLOTTE GOODEN RECOVERY IN THE RIGHT HANDS
SCAN ME!

Take a virtual tour of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center
In early January 2023, Charlotte Gooden’s car was struck by a vehicle on a highway just outside of Lima. Due to the severity of her injuries, she does not remember being transported to Lima Memorial Health System or the details of her first hours as a patient. Charlotte subsequently underwent emergency surgery and began her healing journey at Lima Memorial, where she was instantly comforted by the genuine kindness and expertise of her care team.
When it became clear Charlotte would require extended rehabilitation, she was adamant on remaining at Lima Memorial. She remembered a loved one of hers experienced exceptional care in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, and that assured her Lima Memorial would be the best place for her care.

“I was so relieved when I was told I could begin rehab at Lima Memorial,” shares Charlotte. “I knew the best chance I had for a complete recovery was with their team.”
Charlotte placed her trust in her dedicated care team and diligently followed her individualized recovery plan. Whether engaging in occupational therapy activities, such as getting in and out of bed without assistance, baking cookies in the residential-style kitchen or utilizing state-of-the-art therapy equipment like the car transfer simulator, Charlotte felt encouraged to achieve her goals.
“It can be difficult to know when to push yourself and when to be patient with your healing,” Charlotte reflects. “You can’t do that without someone in your corner encouraging you. I am beyond grateful for the Lima Memorial team.”
As Charlotte’s healing journey continues from the comfort of her home, she looks forward to spending time with her daughters, returning to her sewing hobby and cuddling her puppy, Molly.
THE GUIDING HANDS OF LIMA MEMORIAL ONCOLOGY SERVICES
In the moments following a life-altering cancer diagnosis, many patients experience difficulty focusing on the details of their treatment plan. Often feeling overwhelmed, patients turn to Lima Memorial’s oncology patient navigators to provide a sense of calm amidst what can be a profoundly unsettling time.
With countless years of combined patient care experience, Nicki Slate, Stephanie Reindel, Amanda Meyer and Nancy Hauenstein, help patients navigate the complex healthcare system and eliminate confusion. They offer unique support to each patient and provide much-needed stability during the most difficult of times. Our trusted navigators connect patients with resources, such as nutrition, oncology rehab and integrative medicine services, while working diligently to remove any barriers to treatment. Cancer doesn’t just affect the physical body, but all areas of life, and our navigators make it a priority to provide access to social, financial and spiritual support services.
“You can almost see the stress and anxiety dissipate during our initial introduction,” says Stephanie, patient navigator. “No matter what, our patients know they can call us, and that gives them comfort.”
From diagnosis to survivorship, navigators walk alongside patients and their families, sharing in their most challenging and joyous moments. Through generous support to the Lima Memorial Foundation Hope Fund, patients have the additional resources necessary so they can solely focus on their treatment and healing.

THE NOURISHING THOUGHT THAT COUNTS
The mission of the Lima Memorial Foundation continues to influence the work of Lima Memorial associates far beyond the walls of the hospital. This was especially true for Paige Wagner, oncology and cardiology dietitian, who recognized many of her patients’ nutritional needs were compromised. In response to this need, she went above and beyond to remove barriers, ensuring patients receive the resources they deserve for their health and well-being.
“Nutrition is a critical part of treatment, particularly for patients living with chronic conditions,” says Paige. “Sadly, nutritional supplement drinks and shakes are not always accessible to those who desperately need them to heal.” Paige researched options to fulfill her patients’ needs and partnered with the Oley Foundation. By collaborating with the Oley Foundation and the Lima Memorial Foundation Hope Fund − a fund dedicated to removing treatment obstacles for patients with cancer − Lima Memorial can now supply much-needed nutritional supplements to patients like Roosevelt Savage. Roosevelt is a survivor of lung cancer and needs supplemental nutritional drinks, not just to battle cancer, but to build his strength and actively engage with his children.
It helps me to live better. It helps me throughout the day.
- Roosevelt Savage, Patient
Roosevelt, now in remission, has been feeling more like himself again and faces each day with the faith and optimism instilled in him by the Lima Memorial team. Even more, he expresses much gratitude to those who have joined together to help support his strength and recovery. “Wherever it’s coming from, whoever the person is, you tell them I said thank you, please?” Roosevelt shares. “God bless them.”

A MISSION FOR A JUST HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
When Dr. Praveen Malhotra and his wife, Varsha, joined the Lima Memorial Family in 1978, they received a warm welcome and quickly became valued members of our community. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Malhotra served in many leadership positions throughout the health system, including being one of the visionaries behind the current Lima Memorial Medical Park. Varsha also provided hundreds of hours of valuable service as a member of the Lima Memorial Volunteers.
Urged by the increasing need to improve health equity and remove barriers to advanced health care for women and children, especially those who are marginalized and experiencing financial hardship, the couple turned to the Lima Memorial Foundation. In 2020, the Varsha & Praveen K. Malhotra, MD, Women & Children’s Healthcare Endowment was established to provide support and advocate for women and children in need.
In 2022, more than 55 women at Lima Memorial received support from the Malhotra Endowment. Among other needs, assistance included providing more than 50 blood pressure cuffs for women to monitor their blood pressure and detect pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders at home before they become life-threatening, reducing maternal mortality. Lauren Numbers, Obstetric Surgical Technician at Lima Memorial, has witnessed the impact this support has on the community.
LAUREN NUMBERS, Obstetric Surgical Technician

“I just want to share how much this endowment really makes a difference for mothers and children in our community,” expresses Lauren. “There are so many different factors that come into play and a lot of challenges these women might be facing. Having access to this support is one essential step to getting them started on a successful path in parenthood.”
Dr. Malhotra and Varsha hope the impact of the endowment will inspire others in the community to join them in creating a safer and more just healthcare system for our community.
You can help enrich the Varsha & Praveen K. Malhotra, MD, Women & Children’s Healthcare Endowment by making a gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation and stating your wishes.

We have always believed that the true measure of a society is in how it treats the most vulnerable, and we all have to do our part to make our community strong.
- Varsha & Praveen K. Malhotra, MD
Sixty years ago, chronic disease emerged as a new and dominating health problem. Now, it has reached epidemic proportions, affecting more than half of the population and consuming 86 percent of healthcare expenditures.
Source: www.odh.ohio.gov
Last year, the Lima Memorial Foundation united our community to raise more than $800,000 to help establish a comprehensive Chronic Disease Management Program at Lima Memorial to address this critical need. With our community’s support, we will build a network of care around patients with chronic conditions and improve their quality of life by:
• Coordinating care among providers and healthcare settings
• Establishing a network of services and resources
• Removing barriers to health care to engage patients and effectively manage chronic diseases
Our vision is to provide the same level of care coordination and support in the outpatient setting for high-risk patients with multiple chronic diseases as we do in the inpatient setting.
We are immensely grateful for our donor community who joined together to support the establishment of this program.

IT TAKES A FAMILY OF CARE
The diagnosis of any chronic disease can be overwhelming. Managing multiple medications, doctor visits and feelings of uncertainty can make life feel tumultuous. After receiving a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, Sharron Morris’s mind reeled with questions about her future.

“When you find out you have a condition like this, you immediately think it’s going to ruin your life,” says Sharron. “I needed someone I could talk with.”
Thankfully, Sharron was surrounded by her team at Lima Memorial, and they quickly reassured her she was not alone. With treatment, Sharron could look forward to a more active and fulfilling life.

Sharron’s trust in her care team and willingness to engage with her treatment plan has provided her the opportunity to travel and experience moments of connection and joy with her beloved daughters, grandchildren and friends. The ease at which she is able to connect with her caregivers at Lima Memorial, particularly the LMHS Congestive Heart Failure Clinic team, provides her with the peace of mind necessary to live life to the fullest.

Life-Changing Care Coordination
Diana Blair is dedicated to her family and often serves as a caregiver for her loved ones. In recent years, Diana has experienced health challenges that require her to show the same care and compassion to herself. The anxiety of living with multiple chronic conditions, including diabetes and kidney disease, quickly snowballed, and managing numerous provider appointments and medications left Diana feeling alone and overwhelmed.
Although Diana had the support of her family, she feels the moment she began working with her care coordinator was life changing. Not only does Diana’s care coordinator help with appointments and medication, she also supports Diana by removing barriers to reliable transportation and obtaining fresh, healthy foods that enhance her overall health and wellness.
“When you are able to partner with a care coordinator, it makes your life so much easier,” Diana shares. “Having support allows me to do the things I love.”
Thanks to the support Diana receives from her Lima Memorial care team, she now has time to enjoy swimming, fishing and other outdoor activities.

TEEING OFF FOR A CAUSE

In 2022, the Lima Memorial Foundation held its annual Golf Classic at Shawnee Country Club, with more than 200 golfers teeing off in support of establishing a Chronic Disease Management Program at Lima Memorial. We are grateful to our presenting partners, Huntington Bank, Dr. Dennis Morris, ProMedica and Mike and Danette Swick, along with our many dedicated business partners, for their support in advancing the health of our community.

JOURNEY 2023 SAVE THE DATE
Last fall, more than 500 friends of the Lima Memorial Foundation united on a Journey to Reimagine Health Care at Innovative Packaging in Lima.

Guests recharged their creativity for the Journey gala by wrapping themselves in black and green ensembles and capturing memories in front of pink packaging peanuts. The evening included a multi-course dining experience, which received the stamp of approval from attendees as they strolled through a corrugated paper labyrinth designed to bring them closer to the daily reality patients face with a chronic disease.

September 21
Unique décor created from corrugated paper was used to transform the Innovative Packaging manufacturing facility into a stylish event space. Through tremendous support from our partners, along with outstanding participation in the fund-a-need and silent and live auctions, more than $800,000 was raised to help establish a comprehensive Chronic Disease Management Program for our community. journeyrepackaged.org

JOURNEY 2022 Assembly Team in Action!

Dubbed the Assembly Team, more than 70 Lima Memorial associates joined the Foundation to help establish a Chronic Disease Management Program through financial gifts. We are incredibly grateful for these valued team members who have chosen to invest in this new program. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the more than 80 associates who volunteered countless hours to create an exceptional gala experience for our guests. This support is an amazing testament to the pride Lima Memorial associates have in our organization and their dedication to our patients and community.

An Outside-the-Box Experience

Nick Fields, son of Innovative Packaging owner, Drew Fields, donated his time and talent to create custom furniture and décor that served as both intriguing conversation pieces and unique seating for Journey guests. The chairs and sofas were made of corrugated material sourced from Lima’s Innovative Packaging warehouse and arranged throughout the venue for a seating experience that can only come from thinking outside the box. Thank you to Drew, Nick and the entire Innovative Packaging team for partnering with the Foundation to create a perfectly packaged evening.

RUSS DECKER AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT
Russ Decker, Special Projects Manager at Nutrien, has always been dedicated to the places he’s called home. As a child, Russ’s parents and family members were highly respected local business owners, something Russ feels also came with the responsibility of giving back to the community. This mindset has continued to influence Russ throughout his life and has motivated his desire to promote the Great Care Lima Memorial provides our community.
“It’s making where we live a better place,” says Russ on behalf of himself and his wife, Anne. “That’s what’s most important to us.”
Russ has truly become an advocate when it comes to ensuring family, friends and neighbors have access to the best health care locally, becoming involved with the Lima Memorial Foundation and actively serving as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Capstone Development Committee.

Additionally, Russ has also become an integral part of our Foundation Ambassadors, where he believes he can make the most impact by collaborating with the Foundation to unite our community, through advocacy, to advance the health of our region.
AMBASSADORS ENGAGE!
Lima Memorial Foundation Ambassadors consist of community members who are dedicated to learning about and sharing the work of the Foundation, specifically the role our donors play in bringing quality health care to our region.

One of many benefits of being an Ambassador is forming new relationships and connecting with other Ambassadors, healthcare advocates, community philanthropists and Lima Memorial leaders; ENGAGE is a unique event designed just for this purpose.
ENGAGE invites Ambassadors to participate in a personal, behind-the-scenes tour of key areas of the hospital that have been impacted by gifts to the Foundation. Ambassadors also have the honor of meeting individuals who have received direct care in these areas and an opportunity to spend quality time with Lima Memorial’s President and CEO, Mike Swick, along with other members of the hospital’s executive team.
There are so many ways to get involved... The best part of being an Ambassador is sharing what a great health system we have.

Heather Rutz and Emerging Philanthropists
Heather Rutz, Senior Communications Advisor at Cenovus, is proud to call Lima her adoptive hometown. Along with feeling incredibly welcomed into the community with her wife Beth and their 14-year-old son, Heather has also developed (thanks to her many years of experience as a local reporter) a unique awareness of our community’s needs and a passion to ensure our city continues to grow and thrive.
When Heather needed a medical procedure, she found comfort knowing the sense of belonging she felt in the community extended to the care she received at Lima Memorial Health System.

“That experience was really formative in my appreciation of Lima Memorial,” expresses Heather.
Heather and her family do not simply live in the community, they also believe it is important to invest in it. Through service in a variety of volunteer organizations and philanthropic committees, including the Lima Memorial Emerging Philanthropists, Heather works to make the community a better place for all. This is also a lesson she and Beth are instilling in their son.
Emerging Philanthropists was created to bring together community advocates with an interest in supporting local health care at Lima Memorial through philanthropic gifts of time, talent and treasure. For Heather, it’s a chance to bring solutions and projects to life when it comes to supporting our community’s overall health and well-being.
“Being able to present a need and having leadership that can help leverage a solution is great,” says Heather about what it means to be a part of the Emerging Philanthropists.

JAN HAWK A CONVERSATION WITH
Our Lima Memorial Foundation Board members don’t just live in our community, they are invested in the success of our community. We are grateful to be led by a dedicated group of individuals whose guidance ensures our community continues to have access to the very best health care locally. Jan Hawk, Vice Chair of the Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, dedicated time to share her inspiration for service to our community in an insightful interview that truly displays the committed and caring spirit of our board members.

Where does your passion for service to your community originate?
“My passion for service began when I was a student at the University of Notre Dame. I enrolled in a class called Theology and Community Service. In this class, I made weekly visits to a nursing home where I tried to connect with one particularly cantankerous resident. A friendship bloomed that semester as I learned that being vulnerable and giving of myself would provide a pathway for trust to develop. I learned that volunteering and giving back is about building relationships. It is about using our time, talents and treasure to better our communities.
I have tried to live this message during all the phases of my life: building a marriage, starting a career, raising my sons and now in retirement. During all these seasons of life, I have volunteered in my church, children’s schools and Lima community organizations. I believe we are placed on this earth for a purpose. As Apple CEO Tim Cook stated, ‘Whatever you choose to do with your life…wherever your passion takes you, I urge you to take the power you have been given and use it for good. Aspire to leave this world better than you found it.’ I feel a responsibility to the community where I chose to live and raise my family. If in some small way I can leave my community a better place, then I have succeeded in my life purpose.”
How have you witnessed the Foundation’s impact on the community?
“There are endless ways the Foundation and health system positively impact our community. First and foremost is by bringing the most highly trained medical professionals to Lima Memorial. Other ways include providing the most advanced facilities and diagnostic medical technologies to the region, such as the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, spine and brain robotic technology, sophisticated lung cancer diagnostic technology and more. The Foundation Board members care deeply for our community and work alongside the health system to ensure that the resources are available to offer the most advanced health care locally.”
What is your motivation for serving on the Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Directors?
“When my husband, Jeffrey, unexpectedly died in 2017, I was left feeling lost and unmoored. My identity was intricately tied to being a wife and mother. I needed to figure out how I could turn my beliefs into actions and best serve a purpose in my family and community. In 2018, the Foundation team approached me about their interest in honoring Jeffrey at the donor recognition event, Ovation, for his service to Lima Memorial and to the greater Lima region. My sons and I agreed it was important to tell Jeff’s story, as it may inspire others in the community to pay it forward and to give of themselves as Jeff had done.
In the weeks leading up to Ovation, I worked closely with the Foundation team. They were kind and generous with their time. They presented a story of Jeff’s life that my sons and I were extremely proud of. Shortly after Ovation, I was invited to join a committee of the Lima Memorial Foundation Board and was subsequently elected to the Board. I undertsood the mission of the Foundation — to support the health system in providing access to the most advanced health care locally. My work with the Foundation ensures patients receive expert medical care in their hometown with their loved ones nearby for support.”
Outside of serving the Foundation, what are some of your other interests?
“My family is my biggest joy, and I visit my sons and their families often. I am a loyal Notre Dame football fan and attend most home and some away games. I also enjoy going to baseball games. So far, I have attended baseball games in 16 major league ballparks. I hope to one day make it to games in the rest.”
JAN HAWK, VICE CHAIR LIMA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS
“If, by serving on the Foundation Board, I can impact one family and help them receive the best medical care locally, then I have accomplished something, and my husband’s legacy will live on.”
- Jan Hawk
NURSING PATHFINDERS
In 1902, the Lima Hospital School of Nursing opened its doors, welcoming four eager nursing students destined to become the first graduates and serve at Lima City Hospital. Dedicated to providing care and comfort to patients at the city’s first medical institution, these nursing pioneers, known as the Nursing Pathfinders, paved the way for all future students. Through decades of growth and healthcare advancements, the Nursing Pathfinders, and nurses who followed in their footsteps, remained devoted to providing the highest quality of care for the patients they served.
In 1971, Lima Memorial Hospital School of Nursing celebrated its last graduation and long-standing tradition of providing exemplary education to the forerunners of the nursing profession in Lima. In total, 1,165 nursing students experienced transformative, immersive education within the program, and Lima Memorial Health System remains grateful for their dedication and service.

A SHARED VISION OF GENEROSITY TODD & LYNN SCHAUB
Shortly after becoming parents to their oldest daughter, Todd and Lynn Schaub moved to the Lima area where Todd joined his father at the helm of their family-owned business, now known as S & S Volvo. What started as a homecoming for Todd quickly became an 18-year adventure for the Schaubs, marked by warm family memories, business success and a deep commitment to the betterment of our community.
Today, Todd and Lynn’s shared life vision remains constant, and their commitment to addressing the needs of those in our region is a value they happily share with Lima Memorial Health System and the Lima Memorial Foundation.

“Lima Memorial fosters a generous spirit,” shares Todd. “We feel it from the leadership, but more than that, we see it from the associates who are providing care to those in need.”
The Schaubs have made it a personal priority to join the efforts of the Foundation to help advance the health of our region, as they believe removing barriers to quality health care is paramount to the well-being of the city they call home.
“We are both from modest means,” Todd shares. “At some point, when you achieve success, you may have more than what you need. The more we all support improving our community, the better life is for everyone. It’s easy; you just ask yourself how you can help.”

The Foundation gives many thanks to the Schaub family for sharing in our mission. Countless patients throughout our region will experience an improved quality of life thanks to their generosity.

KEEPING THE COMMUNITY’S BEST INTEREST AT HEART

DR. MEHRAN ARABPOUR
Lima Memorial is privileged to have the region’s most experienced and trusted team of cardiologists and cardiothoracic & vascular surgeons practicing exclusively at Lima Memorial Health System Heart & Vascular Institute. Among those experts is Dr. Mehran Arabpour. For more than 20 years, Dr. Arabpour and his family have made Lima, and Lima Memorial, their home. After completing his fellowship and residency in New Jersey, Dr. Arabpour and his wife, Gerry, set their sights on finding a community that would not just care for their professional goals, but also their family. It didn’t take long for Dr. Arabpour and Gerry to know Lima Memorial and our community is where they belong.
“I love Lima Memorial for the same reason our patients love Lima Memorial; I feel like I am a part of a family,” says Dr. Arabpour. “This is our community’s hospital.”
Cultivating a sense of family and a spirit of generosity at home and at Lima Memorial is a deeply meaningful practice for Dr. Arabpour and Gerry. They truly enjoy interacting with patients and their families outside of medical visits, when dining out or grocery shopping. This love of community also extends to Dr. Arabpour and Gerry’s adult children, who often volunteer and donate to local organizations.
Along with providing outstanding cardiac care, Dr. Arabpour recognizes the importance of collaborating with our health system leaders to ensure our patients have access to innovative, world-class health care. Having witnessed first-hand the enhancements made possible by our donor community, Dr. Arabpour values the impact the Lima Memorial Foundation has on the communities our health system serves.
“Not every city has the luxury of quality care close to home; the Foundation makes this possible,” Dr. Arabpour shares.
We are grateful for our team of expert providers, like Dr. Arabpour, who not only provide exceptional patient care, but also invest personally in the lives of our families, friends and neighbors.

Dr. Mehran Arabpour is a cardiology specialist at Lima Memorial Hospital and has extensive experience in adult congenital heart conditions and cardiac electrical system procedures. Specializing in interventional cardiology and complex high-risk interventional procedures, Dr. Arabpour is the Medical Director of Lima Memorial’s Chest Pain Center and has more than 20 years of experience serving the community.
Simply put, some of the patients we treat would not survive without the support of the donor community.

ALEXA REYNOLDS
Alexa Reynolds, Certified Medical Assistant at the LMHS Heart & Vascular Institute, came from a home with two loving grandparents who dedicated their time to ensuring Alexa had the support, attention and care she needed to thrive. Both raised her to always give more than she takes and to help others when she can. To Alexa, her grandparents have been the inspiration and drive behind her continuous support of Lima Memorial Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need. Just as Alexa’s grandparents cared for her, Alexa cares for the well-being and support of our patients and community.

“They raised me and sacrificed whatever it took to get me to school or sporting events. It didn’t matter what they wanted to do or had scheduled. They would drop everything to do what I needed to do,” shares Alexa. “I just want to follow in their footsteps.”
Through her work, Alexa attests to the many advancements made possible by her own gifts to the Area of Greatest Need, from our advanced heart care technology to our robotics program. Seeing where her gifts to the Foundation are being used reassures Alexa she has placed her love and care in the right place.
Since I’ve been here, there have been many new procedures and equipment the hospital has brought in. I see it positively impacting the care we provide our patients daily.
- Alexa ReynoldsLIVING THE SPIRIT CHAMPION
Whether it’s expansion of new or existing services or investment in technology needed to bring world-class care close to home, gifts to the Lima Memorial Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need allow the hospital to react swiftly to fulfilling healthcare needs in our community as they arise.
LIVING THE SPIRIT CHAMPIONS OF PHILANTHROPY
Each day, our associates perform amazing acts of kindness at Lima Memorial that stretch far beyond their daily roles. In 2022, 68 departmental champions volunteered to lead Living the Spirit. The result was an outstanding $340,000 pledged to the Foundation in support of our patients, fellow associates and our community.

Dedicated Observation Unit Planned 2023 Funding Priority
Lima Memorial is one of many hospitals across the nation facing significant capacity constraints within our inpatient units. In addition to increased health care needs and limited capacity, the prevalence of patients in observation status continues to increase.
The number of patients requiring inpatient treatment that remain in the Emergency Center longer than necessary has continued to drastically increase. While our Great Care never waivers, our patients’ experience will significantly improve with the creation of an Observation Unit.
Many patients presenting with cardiac symptoms require additional assessment to diagnose or rule out a cardiac event. With our current capacity constraints, we are often forced to refuse the transfer in of these patients from the outlying hospitals who rely on our expertise. An Observation Unit will increase our ability to care for these patients, therefore eliminating the need for our family, friends and neighbors to travel outside of the region to receive critical care.

This Observation Unit will enhance the experience of our patients and their family members by alleviating the necessity for patients to remain in our Emergency Center while waiting for the appropriate in-hospital room to become available, thus expediting their diagnosis and streamlining their treatment; this includes our patients arriving with cardiac concerns.
With our community’s support, we will create a dedicated Observation Unit that will give Lima Memorial the ability to have one dedicated location for observation patients, promoting quicker in-hospital decision-making and creating an environment that allows our caregivers to focus on the unique short-term needs of observation patients.

The Heritage Society is comprised of individuals who have made the thoughtful decision to include the Lima Memorial Foundation in their planned giving. Their decision today will continue to advance the health of our community into the future.

Individuals who make a planned gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation are recognized with membership in the Heritage Society. If you have included the Lima Memorial Foundation in your will, trust or other planned gift or desire more information about planned giving, please contact us at lmfoundation@limamemorial.org or 419-226-5087. MARILYN WANNEMACHER
GRANDMA MARILYN’S GIVING LEGACY
After retiring from a 26-year career with Kesner Insurance, Marilyn Wannemacher, fondly known as “Grandma Marilyn” among her Lima Memorial Family, knew she had to continue working with people. This desire led her to join the Lima Memorial Volunteers in 2015. Since then, she has become a cherished member of our beloved volunteer family, dedicating time in multiple areas of our health system, most recently our boutique-style Gift Shop. For Marilyn, the calling to volunteer runs strong in her family, especially with her mother.
In her early days as a volunteer, Marilyn was moved to learn about the incredible impact of the Lima Memorial Foundation. In particular, she enjoyed learning what can be accomplished for our patients when individuals unite for a common cause. It was this that inspired Marilyn to faithfully give as she was able.
When asked what she has gained from her experience as a Lima Memorial Volunteer and donor, Marilyn shared, “The ability to do something positive and worthwhile every day.”

Thank you, Grandma Marilyn, for sharing your time with us!
LIMA MEMORIAL VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We are incredibly grateful to our Lima Memorial Volunteers who donate their time and talents to many areas of the hospital. This dedicated team not only shares their time with us, but also provides significant philanthropic support to the health system. In 2022, the Lima Memorial Auxiliary fulfilled its $500,000 pledge made to the Health System for the new Welcome Center. Since its inception more than a century ago, our volunteer Auxiliary has donated more than $2.4 million to support Lima Memorial and our patients.

I THINK THAT’S PROBABLY THE NUMBER ONE THING I ENJOY, THAT I GET TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE,” SAYS MARILYN, “I GET TO DO SOMETHING FOR THEM. I GET TO ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING.
My mother volunteered until she was 90 years old... She volunteered for everything that needed a volunteer.
