Unit(y) Circle

Artist Live/Work Tower

Chicago, Illinois

Unit(y) Circle is a ~25-story artist live/work tower along the Chicago River at 319 Lower North Water St., emphasizing community unity between artist residents and the public.

Three structural cores support circulation: a central public elevator with residential community platforms and two private cores for residential access and fire escape stairs.

Ground exterior stairs link the elevated northside to the south riverwalk, doubling as public seating for the plaza.

The ground floor includes a main public gallery and floors above contain neighborhood galleries that are publicly accessible for events.

Artist apartments radiate around the central core, with shared circular platform community spaces every two floors.

A hexagonal patterned facade provides built-in furniture and natural lighting for the different types of artists.

Urban Fire Station

St. Louis, Missouri Facets

Facets reimagines a fire station in St. Louis at Delmar Blvd. and N Taylor Ave. as a civic landmark and community hub. In addition to its operational role, it features a multi-purpose community space for local engagement.

The project uses diamond-shaped subtractions to create crack-like forms that define natural lighting, entrances, and transitions between public and operational areas. Glass curtain walls within these cracks offer transparency and connection to other spaces.

A copper and steel patina-inspired enclosure calls to St. Louis’ historic architecture.

Scored Excavation

Bivouac Shelter

Scored Excavation is an imagined bivouac shelter in a dystopian world inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune.

It draws from the motions of clawing and scratching, symbolizing humanity’s struggle to survive in a harsh, barren landscape. Characters venture into the dunes, seeking resources within exposed rock structures, clawing and excavating the earth for survival.

The Bivouac takes the rib framework of a protective Body Device that shields occupants from the relentless sun and sandstorms.

Serving as a shelter, the Bivouac supports months-long excavations, providing refuge until occupants move to the next site, continuing their quest to extract essential resources from the unforgiving environment.
