Pressure grows for enforceable targ
Dozens of MPs this month have supported my early day motions to have enforceable WHO air pollution to be included in Environment Bill. The amendments are supported by the Royal C promoted in Air Pollution News, which I have circulated to members.
64,000 annual deaths are attributable to air pollution in the UK at a cost of £20billion to the eco college of Physicians. The Environment Bill is the opportunity to get provisions into law before we w for air quality enforcement. The Environment Bill must include measures to regulate indoor air pol cent of their time indoors and are exposed to a variety of pollutants from chemicals in construction materials, furniture, cleaning and cosmetic products, damp and mould. The government has a duty to protect public health and future generations: the Environment Bill is its opportunity to do so. That’s why I’m calling for clear and enforceable targets on air pollution; a fiscal strategy to ensure the costs of air pollution are covered and for indoor air quality to be regulated.

Withdrawal Agreement becomes law we now need a soft Brexit with democratic oversight
This month saw the passing of the European Union Withdrawal Act and the beginning of the UK’s transition period for leaving the EU. Whilst the United Kingdom may be leaving the European Union, the General Election did not give the Tories a blank cheque to rip up environmental protections, water down workers rights and not protect the rights of child refugees. I will continue to challenge the Prime Minister and his party to respect the the 16.5m remain voters in the last GE and ensure this is a soft Brexit. Swansea West have nominated Keir Starmer to be the next Labour leader after a positive discussion about our excellent candidates. I am glad to see my nomination is in line with the thinking of local members.

SPRING CLEAN CYMRU Every year volunteers across Wales come together to clean up our beautiful country. This month I supported Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Spring Clean Cymru’ campaign with a Swansea beach clean.
Horrors of the Holocaust must never be forgotten Seventy five years on from the Holocaust, we must again confront the poverty and nationalist popularism that mutated into genocide on an industrial scale. It was a great priviledge that I this month signed the remembrance book in Parliament to ensure that we continue to learn the lessons from the horrors that was the Holocaust. Let it continue to educate society to ensure the Jewish community, and all communities, always remain protected from harm.
POLE TO POLE EXPEDITION This month I attended Swansea Environment Centre’s exhibition featuring Greenpeace’s Pole to Pole expedition, Vice Chair of the all-party Marine Conservation Parliamentary Group. I’m working with them in Parliament in support of a Global Ocean Treaty at the UN to protect oceans outside national waters to open the door to a network of ocean sanctuaries around the world. Our fantastic Swansea Bay is a daily reminder of the importance of the health of our oceans and it’s crucial we protect them from uncontrolled underwater exploitation for minerals, from plastic and other pollution. We must work together to stop the destruction of our oceans and this is exhibition is another wakeup call that we must fight for a greener future for all our communities.
Further action needed against ‘Revenge Porn’ My bill to make illegal the sharing of explicit images on the internet without consent meant ‘Revenge Porn’ was banned. However, obstacles still exist for victims who don’t get anonymity in court and must prove malicious intent. The law must change to ensure victims are protected and criminals punished. In 2018-19 police in Wales received a record number of complaints about image abuse, but less than 1% of cases led to convictions. I’ve heard from victims of this practice in Swansea West who have been caused ongoing distress by the difficult process of getting private images removed from online spaces. The law should change to allow police to act swiftly to prosecute the perpetrators of sexual abuse. This month I called for amendments to the Online Harm Bill in order to protect victims of revenge porn.
Increased Racism amid Coronavirus Outbreak This month I called out an increase in racism directed at the Chinese community in our area. I am appalled that Chinese constituents in Swansea have experienced increased racism since the outbreak of Coronavirus. Racism of any kind is completely unacceptable and it’s saddening to hear from families who have been the target of abusive comments while shopping in Swansea City Centre. I will continue to work with authorities to ensure that the misinformation around this issue is tackled.
It was a pleasure to meet with Swansea University lecturers this week, as they continue to fight for job security and decent pensions. I am calling on Universities UK to come back to the negotiating table.
