LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

1

As I have grown older, I’ve found myself and my interests evolving into new forms. Yet, one passion of mine remains fixed: my love for people and my admiration of genuine human connection. When I reflect back upon my life, the strongest memories that I can recall are my relationships to other individuals of diverse backgrounds, which has taught me great lessons. The thing about these memories, I realized, is that they all start in a place. These places ground me, as I often find myself gravitating toward beautiful landscapes in moments that I crave clarity. The “where’s” of life have helped me figure out the “who’s” I want to be and the “what’s” I stand for. Although I may not completely know who I am yet, I can see myself more and more clearly through each landscape I design. My personal experiences with true human connection drive me forward, and I aspire to leave a legacy that allows others’ to reminisce fondly about the role the landscape played in their experiences with other individuals, or even themselves. I hope to tell stories through my landscapes, and that those landscapes can someday become a part of other peoples’ stories.

SITE VISIT

TRIP TO THE ISLAND OCT 25-27, 2021

During the guided bike tour, we were able to see first-hand accounts of the flooding that has encroached onto the island. We communicated with several residents, who were already taking matters into their own hands by means of raising their houses on stilts or installing grassed swales. In order to allow residents to continue living in their homes, the team conjured several possible solutions alongside city officials.

GUIDED BIKE TOUR FROM CITY OFFICIAL

PRESENTATIONS TO CITY COUNCIL + MAYOR During the visit, we worked in close proximity with the city council of Tybee Island and received insight from the residents. Upon arrival, city officials detailed the issues they wanted us to focus on: flooding and connectivity. We were taken on a guided bike tour of the small island and were able to see first hand evidence of stated issues. At the end of the week, we presented our findings and suggested solutions to city officials, and reconvened at a later date to share our finalized designs.

1 TRAIL EXTENSION, PRIVACY SCREENING, AND A BIRD WATCHING OBSERVATORY This design implements a boardwalk along the edge of the marsh and leads to a bird watching observatory. Since this proposed boardwalk runs along the border of pre-existing homes, a privacy screening of educational signage will be implemented along the side of housing. This signage will inform visitors about the birds and importance of the marsh with hopes of encouraging indivudals to protect the marshland and town that they choose to call their home.

2 CITY HALL BOARDWALK OVER A BIORETENTION GARDEN AND MULTI USE RECREATIONAL AREA

12

This area of Tybee Island is currently rather deserted in regard to design. This area is one of the lowest points of elevation on the island. This plan proposes the implementation of a sunken bioretention garden, having the suggested grassed swales drain into the garden. Since this area also connects to the main activity hub of the city and city hall, it provides great opportunity for connectivity throughout the island. Thus, the proposed board walk will begin here and elevate over the bioretention area, allowing for increased aesthetics and engagement with the flooding mitigation strategies being implemented through other proposed designs.

3 MILLER STREET FLOOD MITIGATION:

PROPOSED GRASSED SWALES

Miller Street was one of the most noticeably affected areas by flooding of Tybee Island. Many residents had already begun to take their own measures of action by creating make-shift grassed swales alongside their houses. This design proposes implementing grassed swales along the entirety of Miller Street, which will flow into the proposed sunken bioretention garden.

FLEXIBLE A re-design of an open street in downtown Athens that utilizes temporary programs to allow for mixture of uses and maximizes the potential of a currently barren, yet popular location in Athens. The site was originally temporarily blocked off from traffic for a game, but the city made decided to make this choice permanent after public approval.

SITE ANALYSIS

College square is a rather recent addition to Athens, GA. Previously, this location served as drivable pathway that connected Broad Street and the Clayton Street. Two years ago, the city temporarily blocked off vehicular access to the site, and later decided to maintain the blockage due to high public appraise. However, although this site remains busy with visitors, it has been largely neglected in terms of design. The sole installations consist of picnic tables and benching, with private businesses taking claim over several of the seating options. Pedestrians lack a clear pathway and often travel straight down the middle of the street. A common use of this space is for studying, as it borders the heart of north campus. However, there is a high amount of noise pollution from passing cars and occasional protests that counteract that ability. This site also gets a high amount of sun, but it lacks shading options, which often drives individuals away from the site.

THE WISHING TREE

EXTERIOR MURALS

Many individuals enter the site from Broad Street, as it is across from the heart of the Univerisity of Georgia. The signed wooden palette stage is installed at the point of entrance, and the back of it will be hand painted with words that make the person feel encouraged to enter + utilize the public park space.

The art floor installion gives individuals the opportunity for some personal creative expression. The ground is a plane that is commonly overlooked, written off as dirty and just a place for one to walk upon. The art floor challenges that narrative and allows individuals to chalk + customize the space.

Inspired by the Japanese festival of Tanabata, the rules of the wishing tree are simple. Make a wish. Write it down on a piece of paper. Fold it and tie around a branch of the wishing tree. Ask a friend to do the same. Keep wishing, until the branches are covered in wishes.

Shipping containers are typically not the first thing that comes to mind when one imagines an attractive space. These five shipping containers, however, are renovated on the interior and are ornamented with fabulous painted murals on the exterior by artists in the local Athens/Oconee area.

The Oyster River River that is located on the gulf coast of Florida presents a great design opportunity. Currently, the site stands heavily isolated from human interaction, riddled with landfill waste and bordered by a forest of mangrove trees. The goal is to transform this site into a space that welcomes families by providing connection to the natural landscape of the Floridian coast with a focus on education. 24

The design is heavily influenced by the formal beauty of the mangrove trees, creating a webbing of trails that gently moves the visitor through the site. Due to the priority of separation between individuals and the highly sensitive mangrove forest, the proposed design utilizes biophilic design strategies to replicate the feeling of physical interaction with these oceanic trees through form, color, and planting choices, which provides a level of education and connection. 27

PERSPECTIVE RENDERINGS OF KEY ATTRACTIONS 28

Living in a world that feels so largely disconnected, whether it be from the prevalence of technology or a post-pandemic culture, the design team seeks to create a space that allows individuals to reconnect. It is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, reconnect with other individuals, or even reconnect with themselves. While we pay our respect to the mangroves by keeping our distance from them, we hope this site can bring people together in ways that are meaningful and enduring. 29

SEASONAL CHANGE OF PLANTING PLAN

The current planting plan that borders the permiter of the Jackson Street Building is composed of mostly soil and minimal planting. This area receives a high amount of foot traffic due to its location in between a parking deck and the heart of North Campus. This planting design revitalizes the area by adding a splash of fall color, creating a sense of place for students entering/leaving the University of Georgia to return to their cars.

European community landscapes and American community landscapes differ greatly, and the differences contribute significantly to the differences between European and American lifestyles. Many European landscapes contain features that encourage a strong sense of community, a life of simplicity, and an active lifestyle. These features are often desirable to individuals of an older demographic, which is why this site will draw heavy inspiration from the European landscape and lifestyle. The site will feature a square plaza, such as the Piazza della Repubblica in Cortona, Italy to serve as a central location where citizens can gather and socialize while fulfilling essential needs, such as shopping or dining. This will include housing within a relatively close proximity to each other to give seniors a feeling of comradery to combat the loneliness often cited in elder demographic living arrangements.

The site will also feature several walkable trails within the natural areas of the site. Community centers will seek heavy influence from European-centric activities. This may include vineyards, wineries, markets with local vendors, etc. This site will avoid commercial-centric aspects such as chain restaurants/stores, high rise buildings, etc, to create a unique, centralized feeling of comradery.

FOREST DENSITY ANALYSIS

SLOPE ANALYSIS

After conducting an inventory and analysis of the site, the forest density and slope gradient played the largest role in my final design. The forest density is thickest around the edges of the site, thus the final design keeps this maintains this density. In regard to slope, the steepest part of the site are along the perimeters of the landscape, which prompted a desire to keep these areas more naturalistic, as this is where the water will flow.

38

PHOTOS FROM THE SITE

CHANGES FROM EUROPEAN TO ATHENIAN Many individuals travel to European countries in seek of a change of pace- a place that incorpates beautiful architecture in combination with walkable cities. The client expressed a desire to create a community that focuses on this slower pace of life that welcomes families and the elderly alike. The final design draws heavy inspiration from notable features found in Europe. However, instead of exact replicas of these features, the design alters the features to adapt them to Georgian and Athens features, as exampled below.
