IT’S TIME
FOR BULLDOG FOOTBALL!
Coach Satini Puailoa - Building Character on and off the Field — Article by Patty Hutchens
If you drove past Sandpoint High School during the latter part of August, it is likely you witnessed a sea of red and white jerseys performing drills, running plays, and working hard. But don’t think that just because football practice officially started on August 19 that the players have just started to train. For many, including the coaches, they have never taken a break. The young men’s commitment to off-season training is a testament to the motivation that Coach Satini Puailoa instills in his players. Coach Puailoa has been a head football coach for 20 years, 11 of which have been at Sandpoint High School. He has brought the Bulldogs to the playoffs several times – ’95,’97, and each year from 1999 to 2002. He has a career record of 101-61 and a winning record of 57-41 at Sandpoint High School. He returned to the head coaching position last year and finished the season at 1-8. But records do not reflect the whole story. In his first year of rebuilding, Coach Puailoa credits the team with never giving up. “Last year was not easy. Those guys stuck it out and battled until the last go around,” said Puailoa adding that the teams they played were unusual in that they were heavily dominated with senior players. 6 SandpointHighSchoolBulldogFootball
While he said that the team is still in the rebuilding process, Coach Puailoa emphasized that his bulldogs are a lot further along this year than last year at this time. He attributes that to the countless hours the players have spent in the weight room during the off season and summer months. And he should know because he has been there as well. “We have progressed on both sides of the ball,” said Puailoa pointing out that it was not until the last couple of games last season did the kids start to click as a team. With the coaching staff at the varsity level remaining virtually the same as last year, Coach Puailoa said it will definitely add to the unity of the team. “It’s our second year working together. That’s a plus,” said Puailoa. “The coaching staff is like marriage and teams are like family. The more time you spend together the closer you become.” When asked what he thought the biggest obstacle will be to for the team, Puailoa replied that it was having the players make that leap of faith that all the work they have put in will show up on the field. “The reality is that the team is in a rebuilding process and has been down for awhile. We need to overcome that and build a winning atmosphere,” said Coach. The number of kids turning out for football has dramatically increased over the last
including a handful of sophomores who will be suiting up for varsity, attended team camp. But the focus was not on football. It was on problem solving and building trust and unity among the young men. It is those character traits that will translate to success on the field.
couple of years; and as the players work hard to earn a spot, it is evident that these young men have what it takes. “As the stakes have risen, we have seen the cream rise to the top,” said Coach Puailoa. With 12 starters and 23 lettermen returning to the roster, Coach Puailoa has many seniors who hope to finish out their years at Sandpoint High School with a winning season. Senior Chase Rodriguez brings a great deal of talent, and height, to the field at wide receiver and defensive back. Rodriguez was all league for the last two years. Senior Cody Millard will bring a great deal of speed to the backfield as full back as will running back Dean Knaggs. Coach Puailoa is relying upon junior Nate Loutzenhieser to lead the team at quarterback. The Bulldogs are eager for the return of senior Carson Paull who plays both running back and defensive back. Paull suffered an injury last year and was unable to play, but he was fully committed to doing what he could to get healthy and gain a starting spot on the roster, and his hard work paid off. While there are a great number of players who possess the skill and determination to be successful, Puailoa recognizes that the process does not happen overnight. He explains that to develop the kids, it is important to not rush the process. “You have to let them grow into it. They may be physically ready, but you have to see how it all plays out.” Perhaps one of the reasons Coach Puailoa has been so successful in the past is his focus on building a bond among the players both on and off the field. In midAugust the varsity players,
“Probably the most important thing you do in any endeavor where you put people together is to make sure everyone is on the same page. If you do everything right, they are sure to be successful,” said Puailoa. “We get the kids to buy into each other.” By putting the athletes into competitive and problem solving situations such as what took place at the August camp, Coach Puailoa said it is easier to determine the weaknesses among the teammates. “Then you have teachable moments,” he said. The focus of the retreat, which was held at Camp Lutherhaven, was on doing what it takes to be a good teammate. “The real test of a team is in the locker room,” said Puailoa. “If you are there to help the team, then you are readily accepted.” According to Puailoa, the range of emotions that the teammates experience with one another is at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between. “It is the greatest laboratory of human emotion,” he said adding that if one person is disengaged it can ruin the whole experience for everyone. “That’s why we went to this camp. To create bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime.” When asked what he enjoys most about coaching football, Coach Puailoa responded that he, like many of the other coaches who came out of retirement to assist him, do it because they are educators. Participating in the development of the young men is the reason Coach Puailoa went into teaching in the first place. “Football is just a (teaching) tool, but it is such a good one because it embodies body, mind and spirit,” said Coach.
He and his coaching staff work hard to make sure that the athletes excel in the classroom as well. They are constantly checking the students’ grades and guiding them to get the help they need if necessary. “It is another set of eyes that shine light on them and teach them to prioritize. We stress academics first and then come training and practice.” The players who are attracted to the sport of football are typically high risk takers, and Coach Puailoa said it is a privilege to be able to teach and guide them during these important years in their lives. And that process does not stop during the off season or summer months. On any given day after school or during break, Coach can be found in the weight room, encouraging, instructing and motivating kids. His door is always open for not only students but their parents as well. He recognizes that high school sports may not always be fair, but that is a good life lesson for the kids. “In youth sports everyone receives a trophy or a ribbon. That is great at the lower level, but it all changes in high school,” said Puailoa. “You only get what you earn.” For that reason he does what he can to encourage kids to work hard year round. “We are always fighting for the underdog. We teach the kids who may not be as good to work hard and fight for a position.” For some kids Coach Puailoa and his staff may be the only adult mentors they have, and Coach cares about these kids as if they were his own. He wishes he had been able to have more time with last year’s seniors. “Everything we do from here on out will be on their (last year’s seniors) shoulders,” said Coach. “They had to bear the burden of the beginning of the rebuilding process, and it will get easier now for each class.” Coach Puailoa’s enthusiasm is contagious, and he has a way of making kids feel good about themselves, no matter what the situation. And while he said the whole high school football experience is about the journey, he knows that the kids’ hard work will pay off. “The true test will be the score board on Friday night.” For SHS Football Highlights throughout the season, log onto the sports tab at www.sandpointliving.com.

SATINI PUAILOA
RAY MILLER
HEAD COACH
QUARTERBACK & RECEIVERS COACH - OFFENSE
Head Coach Satini Puailoa is no stranger to fans of Sandpoint High School football. Before arriving in Sandpoint in the mid-1990s, Coach Puailoa served as the Head Coach for both Montebello High School in California from 1981-1985 and Santa Barbara High School from 1986-1994. He began his coaching career in Sandpoint in 1994 where he coached until stepping down in 2004. He led the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a state championship during the 1997 season and they finished in the runner-up position in 2003. During the ten years that Coach led the Sandpoint Bulldogs, he posted a 63-37 record. Puailoa returned to the helm as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2012. In 2005 Coach Puailoa appeared on the television show “ESPN Bound for Glory.” Coach Puailoa currently serves as the department chair for the physical education department at Sandpoint High School and is a physical education instructor. Coach Puailoa says the driving force behind his desire to coach is simply to help young men develop into better men. He is looking forward to witnessing firsthand this group of young men grow and develop. He said he especially enjoys seeing them participate in the journey of chasing perfection and achieving excellence. Words of wisdom to his team: “Become a servant to your teammates, school, and community. The more you help others, the more you will benefit.”
CHRIS LASSEN
ASSISTANT HEAD COACH, & LINEBACKER COACH Coach Lassen served as the head coach for Sandpoint Bulldog varsity football from 1978-1982. Prior to that he served as the head coach for the JV football team from 19751977. He returned to Sandpoint football in 2011 as the Junior Tackle assistant coach. He returned to the varsity squad in 2012 as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Prior to retiring in 2006, Lassen taught school for 38 years—30 of which were at Sandpoint High School. He served as coach for football and track, and as an administrator. His experience away from Sandpoint High School includes four years in an athletic director position and as a wrestling coach. Lassen currently spends his time as an executive advisor at Pneu-mex Technologies in Sandpoint as well as farming on his ranch, homesteaded by his great grandfather. He also owns a small logging operation. Coach Lassen is happy to be coaching with Satini Puailoa again as he says they share the same philosophy in coaching the young athletes in the community. “It is an opportunity for me to give back to the community,” said Coach Lassen. “And I want to pay it forward the same way I was helped in life changing ways by football and my coaches.” His goal is also to instill discipline and trust so the young men can be successful on and off the field. Words of wisdom to his team: “Being part of a brotherhood completes the development of becoming a man; and football will be a conduit for this to happen.”
8 SandpointHighSchoolBulldogFootball
Ray Miller began coaching freshman football in the early 1970s. In the late 70’s he and Coach Lassen teamed up to coach the Sandpoint Bulldog Junior Varsity team. Miller later became the offensive coordinator under then head varsity coach Lassen. In addition to football, Ray Miller also served as the Sandpoint Bulldog’s head wrestling coach for 15 years. In the mid-1980s Miller took a break from coaching in order to spend more time with his two daughters. In 1990 Ray Miller returned to coach 8th grade football and later moved up to coach varsity with Coach Puailoa. Ray Miller retired from both teaching and coaching in 2003 and served as Mayor of Sandpoint from 2002 to 2008. A bulldog through and through, Coach Ray Miller spent 30 years teaching Economics and A.P. Government at Sandpoint High School. “After November some of these seniors will never snap up a chin strap again,” said Miller. “The memories they create here will stay with them their whole life and I want those memories to be great.” Words of wisdom to his team: “Pros are people who do jobs well—even when they don’t feel like it.“
MIKE MCNULTY OFFENSIVE LINE & FRESHMAN COACH
CROSBY TAJAN
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH A 1993 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Tajan went on to play offensive tackle for the University of Idaho from 1993-1997. After graduating, Coach Tajan returned to Sandpoint High School where he has been a physical education instructor for the last 15 years. During that time, Coach Tajan has coached a variety of sports. He served as Sandpoint High School varsity offensive line coach from 1998-2005, was the offensive line coach for the 8th grade Sandpoint Junior Tackle in 2011 and has also coached middle school and freshman basketball as well as varsity track. Coach Tajan said his desire to be involved with the SHS football program stems from many areas, but is largely due to the fact that Coach Puailoa’s program and philosophy is one with which he strongly agrees. “It is always an honor to be part of his staff.” Coach Tajan is anxious to work with these youth and says they are kids who are hungry for success and are willing to put forth the work it takes to achieve it. Coach Tajan is married to his wife Morgan, who is also an alumni of Sandpoint High School. They have two daughters: Tacey and Willow. “It’s exciting to teach and coach players who are so willing to learn and absorb practical information and techniques that will actually allow them success,” said Coach Tajan. Words of wisdom to his team: “Finish! Always give it your very best and commit to giving your best work to the very end no matter the score, the situation or the event. Always finish strong and leave your mark as one consisting of great effort, attention to detail and execution.”
Coach McNulty will divide his time this season between helping out with the Varsity team and working with the freshman team. He has lived in Sandpoint for 33 years and has been involved with Sandpoint football in various capacities for several of those years. From 1985 through 2002 Coach McNulty worked with the Junior Tackle team, freshman and JV teams. He also was a Sandpoint wrestling coach until 1990. Having coached under Coach Puailoa for ten years, Coach McNulty said he is confident the players will have fun and be successful. He is eager to give back to his community and said participating in the football program will be a perfect avenue for him to do just that. “It’s a great opportunity to see the kids grow physically, socially and psychologically,” said Coach McNulty. Words of wisdom to his team: “It is important to understand and learn how to play a role in something bigger than yourself. How you handle both victory and defeat and how you react in hard times and successful times is important with anything you face in life.”
STEVE RUSSO
RUNNING BACKS COACH OFFENSE Steve Russo served as the head coach for the SHS freshman team in 2011 prior to joining the Varsity coaching staff in 2012. He also coached the SMS 8th grade team a few years ago—an experience he counts as one of the most rewarding experiences in his 17 years of coaching. “Watching kids achieve more than they ever thought they could by beating a team that had gone undefeated the previous six years was a thrill,” said Russo. Russo started coaching in 1990 in Poway, CA. He coached at his alma mater Poway High School, a Division One Palomar League School and at the Bishop’s School in La Jolla, CA. One team he coached at Bishops won 29 straight games, another highlight in his nearly two decades of coaching experience. Russo said he has worked with kids his whole adult life and enjoys being around them and doing his best to be a positive role model in their lives. “It’s pretty simple in my mind,” said Russo. “Teach them a few things that they can carry with them their whole life and that will ultimately make them better human beings.” Words of wisdom to his team: “There are three things that Coach Russo believes are important in life: hard work pays off; do it right or don’t do it at all; and nothing in life is free or comes easy, so you better get ready to dig deep and fight for whatever you desire in this life.” 2013Football

JOHN KNOWLES
DEFENSIVE LINE COACH Coach Knowles is a name that is familiar to those who have followed the Sandpoint High School bulldogs over the years. A 1966 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Knowles was inducted into the Sandpoint Bulldog Athletic Hall of fame in 2006 for football, track and wrestling. He started his coaching career at Wallace High School from 1971 to 1972 as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. His coaching experience with Sandpoint High School spanned two decades. He served as the linebacker and defensive line coach from 1986 to 2004 and has coached in every state playoff game including three championship games and the state title in 1997.
STEVE MILLER
WIDE RECEIVER AND STRONG SAFETY COACH DEFENSE Coach Miller first joined the Sandpoint High School varsity coaching staff in 2012 and brought with him extensive experience. He coached Sandpoint High School football for ten years from 19962003 and again from 2006-2007. In addition to football, Coach Miller has also coached track and wrestling for 19 years. Miller is an elementary school physical education teacher and said when he was presented with the opportunity to work with Coach Puailoa again, he could not pass it up. Like many of the other coaches, he especially looks forward to working closely with his players and seeing them grow throughout the year. “I’m excited to see the improvement of the kids as the season progresses,” said Miller. “In this program kids always get better as the season goes on.” Words of wisdom to his team: “Enjoy the ride and never give up.” 10 SandpointHighSchoolBulldogFootball
Coach Knowles retired from teaching in 2005. He taught for 10 years at Sandpoint High School, 8 years at Lake Pend Oreille High School and 1 year at Clark Fork High School. When asked why he wanted to be involved again with coaching, he said he can sum it up in two words: Satini Puailoa. “Coach Puailoa is a proven program builder and places the student athletes at the center of the program,” said Coach Knowles. “He has the unique ability to bring quality adults and young adults together and build a team concept and helps everyone find personal achievements and confidence.” Words of wisdom to his team: “Don’t miss one moment of this opportunity. Be involved in every part of it. High school football only happens once in your life and it goes by fast. This is an opportunity for you to test the limits of your physical and mental toughness in a safe and controlled environment. The adults you are with truly care about you.”
SCOTT ALBERTSON DEFENSIVE BACK FIELD COACH
Scott Albertson is an experienced Sandpoint coach. A 1986 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Albertson was a three year starter in the position of free safety for Whitworth College. After graduating from college, Coach Albertson served as an assistant coach on the Sandpoint High School varsity football team under then head coach Bill Barlow. He left the program when Barlow resigned but returned to coaching in 1994 to assist his brother, Tom Albertson, with the freshman program. After coaching at the freshman level for 2 years, Coach Albertson then moved up to help coach the varsity team under Coach Puailoa He coached the secondary until 1997—the year that Sandpoint won the state title. He then chose to step down to spend more time with his children. Albertson, who is the owner and agent of Albertson Insurance Services in Sandpoint, said he is looking forward to being an instrumental part of building the football program back to the high level of competition it was known for in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Coach Albertson said that he and his fellow coaches have a history together, and he enjoys being part of such a highly committed coaching staff as that which will take the field this fall. One aspect of coaching he enjoys the most is watching the young men grow and develop a confidence in themselves. Since Albertson left coaching several years ago, he has mentioned to many people in the community that he missed getting to know the young men in the community on a more personal level. “Coaching allows this and that is what I look forward to the most,” said Albertson. Words of wisdom to his team: ”Never give up no matter how difficult the situation seems. Perseverance will prosper.”
PAUL MAEUL
MARTIN RODRIGUEZ
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
SPECIAL TEAMS & DEFENSE COACH
Coach Maeul was a newcomer to Sandpoint High School football in 2012, but he certainly came with a great deal of experience. An English teacher at Tahoma Junior High School in the Seattle area, Coach Mauel took a leave of absence to come to Sandpoint and assist his friend of over 10 years, Coach Puailoa. “Satini and I have the same philosophy in terms of coaching and keeping kids at the center,” said Mauel who said he is looking forward to working with the kids again this year. Coach Mauel graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1988 and for the 2 years prior to joining the Bulldogs has served as a secondary coach for his alma mater’s football team. Prior to that Mauel held the position of a graduate assistant under University of Washington Hall of Fame coach Don James from 1989-1991. There he was part of a staff that saw many of its players go on to play in the NFL. Coach Mauel also coached Senio Kelemete during his tenure at Evergreen High School. Kelemete was drafted in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals. Words of wisdom to his team: “Make the big time where you are now. So many people look to the future, but life is where you are at this moment. Enjoy the journey.”
SHANE FRANKS INSIDE DEFENSIVE LINE COACH
If anyone should know if Coach Puailoa can motivate and bring passion to his players, it is Shane Franks. “The passion I have, I got from him,’” said Franks, referring to Coach Puailoa. “He had a huge effect on me.” A Sandpoint High School graduate, Shane was a soccer player until his freshman year of high school. He decided to give football a try and in his four years under Coach Puailoa, he went from a 140 lb. soccer player to a 220 lb. first team all-state nose guard. So, when Coach Puailoa asked him to join his coaching staff, Franks did not hesitate. “This is the program I grew up with,” said Franks. After graduating from SHS, Frank served in the United States Army for seven years. “My goal is to go to school, become a teacher and coach football,” said Franks, whose stepfather Chris Lassen is also a coach on this year’s staff and has coached with Coach Puailoa for many years. Shane looks forward to helping the team of young men develop into the best players they can be. “I am excited to take the journey with them,” said Franks.
Coach Rodriguez has been a longtime Bulldog fan. His son, Anthony, played under Coach Puailoa at Sandpoint High School several years ago and now his son Marcus will have the same opportunity. Martin, owner of Martin’s Alignment Center and Sandpoint Mobile Tire, coached flag football for three years before moving onto Sandpoint Junior Tackle where he served as head coach. He currently serves as President of the Board for the Junior Tackle program in Sandpoint. When Coach Puailoa was offered the head coach position at Sandpoint High School, Martin knew it was a team with which he wanted to be involved. The kids deserve the best, said Coach Rodriguez, and Puailoa’s program helps the kids become bigger, better, faster, and stronger. He looks forward to bringing the fun back onto the football field while at the same time teaching the kids that by reaching deep down and giving it all they have through hard work and commitment, they can do anything they set their mind to. Words of wisdom to his team: “Give it 110 percent both on and off the field.”
Words of wisdom to his team: “Give 100 percent of yourself all the time in every aspect of your life.”
JARRETT ROBSON - EQUIPMENT MANAGER Jarrett is a 1997 graduate of Sandpoint High School and has served as the equipment manager for the last 15 years. A big part of his job is to ensure that all the players have the equipment they need for games and practices. He is excited to have Coach Puailoa back and looks forward to seeing how the coaches and players interact. Words of wisdom to his team: “Remember that how you prepare yourself here at Sandpoint High School determines how you carry yourself out there in the real world.”
NATHAN MARLEY - DEFENSE/ TRAINER Nathan is a 1997 graduate of Sandpoint High School and played for Coach Puailoa in 1996. He is a coach volunteer and also helps with the 7th grade Junior Tackle team. Marley will work with the defensive line which he played in high school and help assit the trainer. He is a loyal Bulldog and part of the Bulldog Nation! Words of wisdom to his team: “Always do your best in anything you do! Commit to being excellent in the real world!”

HOW ABOUT THOSE
BULLDOGS
Ron Hanson - The Voice of Sandpoint Bulldog Football for 35 Years — Article by Patty Hutchens
and was a much needed shot in the arm for the program.” One of Hanson’s more vivid memories from his years as an announcer occurred a number of years ago when Coeur d’Alene came to Sandpoint and the players on Coeur d’Alene were substantially bigger than those on the Sandpoint Bulldogs. “I could tell our kids were intimidated so I took it upon myself to shrink the size of the Coeur d’Alene players,” said Hanson who announced the opposing players’ weight as much less than they actually were. While the home crowd caught on to what he was doing and cheered, the response from then Sandpoint’s Athletic Director Duane Ward was less than enthusiastic. “He let me know in no uncertain terms that it was not okay,” said Hanson.
When the announcer for the Sandpoint High School football games moved out of town, Ron Hanson agreed to take over the duties at Barlow Stadium for the remainder of the season. That was 1978. Last season Hanson completed his 35th season as the voice behind the microphone for home football games at Barlow stadium, and he does not plan on leaving any time soon. A 1967 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Hanson has followed Sandpoint football for decades and recalls many fond memories of athletes and coaches of days gone by. Among the more animated and inspiring coaches is Chris Lassen, who returned to the coaching staff last year as an assistant coach with Satini Puailoa. Crosby Tajan, who played at Sandpoint High School while Hanson announced the games, is currently an offensive coach for the Bulldogs and is another whom Hanson has enjoyed watching through the years. The return of Coach Satini Puailoa last year is one that Hanson and many others welcomed. “The first go around for Satini was a bright spot in Sandpoint football history,” said Hanson. “It brought the program back to the glory days of Cotton Barlow,
What Ward told Hanson in that short conversation has actually remained with him throughout the years and is a constant reminder of his role as an announcer of the games. “He told me I was doing this for the kids, and that I was not announcing only for Sandpoint but also for the visiting team,” said Hanson who adds that as a lifetime resident of Sandpoint, he is naturally biased towards the home team. Bulldog fans look forward to Hanson’s enthusiastic voice shouting “How about those Bulldogs!!” after each touchdown for the home team. He said it one time and the reaction of the crowd was overwhelming so he has continued to do it each time the home team scores. It has become his signature line. “I always wonder before each game how many times I will have the opportunity to say it,” said Hanson. He recalls one time when the Bulldogs were beating Coeur d’Alene and at one point when he made his post-touchdown announcement, the Coeur d’Alene coach sitting in the booth next to Hanson tried to reach over and grab the microphone. While Hanson’s announcing does help energize the crowd, he said the Bulldog fans are already very excitable and adds that getting the crowd to its feet is something he leaves up to the cheerleaders.

Many fans will recall a game two years ago when the penalties called were continually against the home team Bulldogs who were losing by a large margin. Amazed at the number of penalties, Hanson announced that there was yet another penalty against “you know who.” It was not something the referees
found amusing. The referee borrowed the coach’s headset and chastised Hanson for the remark. “It was a little unnerving to be chewed out in front of your own hometown,” said Hanson. Hanson has worked as a realtor for the last 13 years. Prior to that he was the business manager at the CEDU schools in Bonners Ferry and also owned a Television and Home Electronics store in downtown Sandpoint. As time would allow he and his colleague in the announcer’s booth, Dwight Sheffler, attended many of the away games, but do not do so as much anymore. They were not able to attend the game where the Bulldogs won the State Championship but that did not deter the two from celebrating. “We listened to the game on the radio, and when they won we went to the stadium and rang the victory bell,” said Hanson. Hanson’s position is strictly volunteer but humbly he says he is one of many and is eager to recognize all those who contribute their time in support of youth athletics. He recalls Bill Fournier who passed away in late 2011 and who for 51 years was a member of the honor guard at each of the home football games. Hanson said Bob Johnson is a current member of the honor guard and has also taken part in the home games for over 50 years; Dwight Sheffler has been a spotter in the booth with Hanson for the last 30 years; and Nancy Miller has worked the ticket booth for over 30 years. And then there is the man who has made sure that Hanson does not go hungry each game – Chuck Schoonover who has been a volunteer for a number of years cooking hamburgers and delivering one to Hanson during every home game. “They are the behind the scenes people who go unnoticed,” said Hanson. Ron Hanson looks forward to what the upcoming seasons hold for the Sandpoint Bulldogs and hopes to continue enthusiastically announcing “How about those Bulldogs!” for many years to come. “I feel fortunate to be able to participate for as long as I have,” said Hanson. “I still get butterflies before each game.”

Jarrett Robson shows a great leap of faith at the Lost in the 50s Bulldog fundraiser when he turns over the key to his trailer to Bulldog mom Tami Feyen. Robson purchased the trailer with his own funds and uses it to transport all the team's equipment.
A VALUABLE MEMBER OF THE BULLDOG TEAM — Article by Patty Hutchens
Dedicated. Enthusiastic. Supportive. These are all words to describe Jarrett Robson, a fixture on the Sandpoint High School football staff. With the exception of 2006 when he took a year off, Jarrett has served as the equipment manager for the team for 16 years. If you are a Sandpoint football fan, there is no doubt you have seen him. He can be found before both home and away games loading the Bulldog trailer, ensuring that every player and coach has what he needs to be prepared for the big game. At the game Jarrett paces the sidelines, makes sure water bottles are filled and chin straps are secure. And most importantly he cheers and encourages the players. Jarrett, also known as “Jar-Bear” to many, takes great pride in his role as equipment manager. And with good reason. Everything one sees happening with regard to the equipment is a direct result of Jarrett’s hard work. Jarrett graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1997 after moving here from Dallas two year earlier. He attended the University of Idaho and in addition to his studies, Jarrett served as the equipment manager for both the University of Idaho Vandal’s football team and the Sandpoint Bulldogs. “I came to Sandpoint on Thursday night and worked both home and away games. Then I would leave in the early hours on Saturday to get to Moscow for the U of I home games,” said Jarrett, who said his grades did not suffer due to the hectic schedule. Although he is reimbursed for expenses, Jarrett’s role is strictly a volunteer position.
36 SandpointHighSchoolBulldogFootball
Among his duties are to ensure players and coaches have everything they need for games and practices. He runs water out to the players during game timeouts, and he transports the equipment to and from games in a trailer – a trailer he purchased with his own money. “I am always ready for the unexpected,” said Jarrett. Being the equipment manager is very labor intensive, involves long hours and for most it is a thankless job. But that’s not how Jarrett sees it. He loves his role and said he enjoys knowing he can make a difference in the lives of others. He especially enjoys watching the kids mature during the four years they spend at Sandpoint High School. “I take a lot of pride watching them come in young freshman and walking out young men,” said Jarrett. Jarrett said he prefers to manage football as opposed to other sports because he said there are a lot more players and a lot of things to keep him busy. Because he has been with Sandpoint High School for so many years, Jarrett has worked with different coaches, but said he was excited when Coach Puailoa returned to the position last year. “The light was snuffed out when Coach Puailoa left before, but the light has come back,” said Jarrett referring to the enthusiasm of the players. “The players’ confidence has grown by leaps and bounds.” While he looks forward to his ultimate goal of getting a state championship ring, Jarrett does not lose sight of his mission as equipment manager. “My goal is to make the coaches’ jobs easier, because all I want them to worry about are the ‘X’s and the ‘O’s.”

MEMORIAL FIELD Working to Rebuild Grandstands — Article by Patty Hutchens
469061 Hwy 95 | Sagle, ID 83860
208.255.5945 sandpointcars.com The year was 1946. Harry Truman was president of the United States, the federal minimum wage was a mere 40 cents per hour, first class postage was 3 cents and the average price of a new vehicle was $1,125. It was also the year that the current grandstands at Barlow Stadium at War Memorial Field were built. The grandstands have seen a lot of action in the nearly 70 years since first constructed.

Today the stadium is host to Sandpoint Bulldogs football, Sandpoint Bulldogs men’s and women’s soccer, the Festival at Sandpoint, American Legion baseball, Sandpoint High School graduation, and junior tackle football. It is time to rebuild this treasure and make sure it is available for safe use for the next generations. A community group, called Friends of Memorial Field, have been working on plans to replace the existing grandstand that include many upgrades which will make it more functional. Included in the plan is a covered seating area, increased seating capacity, compliance with the Americans with Disability Act, and construction of a new entry way - all while maintaining the historic feel of the venue. But like anything, such an effort takes money. The Friends of Memorial Field has several sponsorship levels and payment plans so you too can be a contributor to this great cause. All donations are deductible on both state and federal taxes.

I volunteered to help raise money for the stadium because the stadium is such an important destination point for our residents and visitors. I asked a couple of the old timers what Memorial Field meant to them. Here is what they said: “I received my first my kiss behind the bleachers. It’s a night I’ll never forget.”

“I went on my first date to a home football game. We won and it was the best date ever. It ended up a lifelong commitment. We were married after graduation and are celebrating our 20th anniversary.” “Memorial Field became more than I thought it would be.” Memorial Field is to this day the “heart and soul” of our community. The word heart conjures up the appropriate emotions that help define how important the facility is to all of us, even if we weren’t born here. Enthusiasm, school spirit, pride are a few words that describe the feelings that we have when we walk through the gates for a game, The Festival at Sandpoint or to honor our fallen soldiers, police and fire department officers who keep us out of harms way.

Goes a Long Way to Helping Support the Local Football Program — Article by Patty Hutchens
For the second year in a row, Bulldog Nation has sold raffle tickets for a chance to win a vintage vehicle; and thanks to the support of the community they have raised over $90,000 in two year’s time. Last year they raised over $50,000.00 - money that went directly to help fund youth and high school football in this community. It was a massive undertaking, and many local businesses and community members stepped up to make this happen. This year the raffle raised over $40,000. In addition to supplementing the cost for players to attend football camp, the funds have gone to replace the older equipment with newer and safer gear, including top of the line helmets and pads. It also has become necessary to purchase additional equipment since the number of players involved in youth football has nearly doubled since Coach Satini Puailoa took over the program last year. For two straight years local football players, from the senior class down to those in the junior tackle program, pounded the pavement going door to door collectively selling raffle tickets for $5 each. “We can’t run these programs without support from the local community. Dollar by dollar, it’s about the need to get on the field,” said Puailoa, appreciative of all the people and businesses that purchased tickets. “To have people step up like that is huge for the kids. They’re supporting football in this town from the 3rd grade to 12th graders.” Not only were the youth busy selling tickets, but also several businesses stepped forward to support the endeavor by purchasing a minimum of $500 in raffle tickets. Thank you to the following businesses for your support!

DEDICATION PAYS OFF FOR SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS Five Students Break SHS Athletic and Weight Lifting Records — Article by Patty Hutchens
It has been a busy year in the world of Sandpoint High School football. Since Coach Satini Puailoa took over in early 2012, there have been kids turning out for football who never considered doing so before. The enthusiasm among players is high and the energy contagious. Walk into the SHS weight room on any given day after school or during the summer months, and you will find dozens of players lifting weights, running on the treadmill, running drills and doing what they can to maximize their skills prior to the 2013 football season. But it’s not only the players who are there, several coaches are also on hand to supervise and help the young men perfect their techniques. They encourage and support them to be the best they can be on and off the field. That enthusiasm and dedication has paid off. In the last year four young men who are sophomores this year and one recent graduate have broken school records, some of which have been in existence for over a decade. Colton Engle, Alex Feyen, Brett Hutchens and Kyle Perry have all broken or tied school records for their age group as has Nik Feyen.
Engle, who also plays basketball and is on the track team, ran the “I” drill in 3.8 seconds breaking the previous record of 4.0 set by Isao Puailoa, Coach Puailoa’s son. Alex Feyen tied the record for bench, lifting 330 pounds. He now shares the record with Sandpoint High School teammate Jeffrey Kappen who will be a junior this fall. Brett Hutchens, who until his freshman year was a dedicated soccer player and had never before played football, committed his free time to training and gaining the strength he needed to compete in his newly discovered sport. The result? A new power clean record at the freshman level of 275 pounds. Not long afterwards his teammate Kyle Perry tied Hutchens’ record, which they now both share. The previous record was held by Matt Lawrence. Hutchens and Perry also share the vertical jump record of 33 inches with Jeremiah Gagnon who set the record a few years ago as a freshman. But those aren’t the only records Perry has broken. He holds the freshman record for total lift with a record 1445, breaking the previous record of 1410. And Perry did more than break the previous record lift for low squats by a freshman - he shattered it. The previous record was 365 pounds and Kyle now holds the record at 455 pounds, a record that may be around for quite awhile. He also now holds the long jump record at 9 feet 6 inches as well as the 40-yard dash record at 4.51 seconds. For Nik Feyen who graduated in June, he leaves Sandpoint High School with a tie of the senior bench record which is also held by former SHS student Troy Watson. Nik also holds the all time bench record for juniors at 405 pounds.
Pictured left to right Nik Feyen, Alex Feyen, Brett Hutchens, Kyle Perry and Colton Engle, all of whom broke or tied school athletic and weight lifting records over the past year. 46 SandpointHighSchoolBulldogFootball

208.263.2995 word – dedication. All the young men were in the weight room during the off-season. Whether it was after school or during the summer, they made the commitment to be there and not only work on their own skills, but to encourage one another as well. “(My brother) Nik and my friends kept me motivated to come in and lift,” said Alex Feyen. “And when I did I had a lot of fun.” Colton Engle, who plays corner back on the team, said the training he has done throughout the last year has helped him to increase his speed and make faster cuts. He can run on the treadmill at a top speed of 22 mph and said the training has not only helped him in football, but in basketball and track as well. “I am able to jump in front of the ball and get down the field quicker,” said Colton, who adds that he appreciates the fact the coaches are always there to help instruct him. Brett Hutchens said he found the resistance training he does with bands to be very helpful in his quest to lift heavier weights. “It helps me become more powerful and explosive,” said Hutchens who also credits the vibration platforms with helping him increase his strength and stability. Even after suffering a broken arm and surgery early this summer, Hutchens was determined to do what he could and showed up to to work outs and was ready for the season opener. “I was determined to get my full strength back and be ready to go as soon as possible,” said the sophomore. Nik Feyen will be attending the University of Idaho this fall and said while he only played under Coach Puailoa and his staff for one year, he learned a great deal from all of them. “I was much more motivated my senior year,” said Nik. “They (the coaches) want you to succeed not just for them, but for yourself.” All of these players agree that the discipline and hard work that has led them to where they are today have taught them lessons far beyond the football field. “It’s important to make a goal and strive for it,” said Brett Hutchens. agrees. “Do not give up. Keep striving for what you want to achieve,” he said. Kyle Perry said it is never too early to start working towards your goals. He started coming to the weight room in 8th grade and continued throughout the following summer and his freshman year. “You have to keep pushing at it every day,” said Kyle, who adds that the weight room has become like a second home. Colton said he advises younger players to stay focused – something that is not always easy to do when entering the new world of high school.
For Brett Hutchens who made the switch to football as a freshman, he said it is important to never get discouraged. “Never let someone tell you that you cannot do something. Instead, let it motivate you to prove to them you can.” he said. As Nik Feyen heads off to college, the younger athletes are grateful for the leadership Nik and his teammates have given them over the last year. But they don’t want him to get too comfortable being a record holder. After all, they have three more years to go at Sandpoint High School and each of them is determined to break more records.

“We wish the Bulldogs a safe and successful season!” —Tom Puckett & Teague Mullen

AREA BUSINESSES LEND THEIR SUPPORT To The Football Community — Article by Patty Hutchens
With so many causes to support in our community, how does one choose to which organization they will give not only of their time and talent, but their donations as well? For the Sandpoint football community, they are grateful for the support they have received from many businesses including Tom Puckett & Teague Mullen of Century 21 Riverstone, Idagon Homes, Martin’s Automotive, Interstate Concrete and Envik Construction. For Tom Puckett the motivation behind his donation is not the recognition, but knowing he can help make a difference in the life of a young student. “Football was and still is my most favorite sport,” said Puckett who adds that it taught him more than a sport; it also taught him a life lesson in that if you work hard towards a set goal that work eventually pays off. “We were lacking in a lot of areas so I feel the little bit we do makes a huge difference for the program, but most important the students.” And he should know. A Sandpoint native who graduated from SHS in 1993, Puckett played football along side now assistant coach Crosby Tajan and received the coveted Jerry Kramer Award his senior year.

According to Puckett, the future of Sandpoint football is bright, and he and his business partner Teague Mullen were happy to be able to donate towards the purchase of the pan style blocking sled, the other half of which was donated by Martin’s Automotive. For Tom and Kim Puckett and Teague and Melissa Mullen, the most important reason behind supporting youth athletics is to help lead the youth down the right path in life. “Whether it’s football, lacrosse, or soccer, we as adults know that it is being involved in activities that keeps the kids out of trouble,” said Puckett, who also gives of his time coaching the 5th and 6th graders in junior tackle. And as far as that 5th and 6th grade team goes, stay tuned. They have already defeated a team that was undefeated last year. “This group of kids coming up have a lot of heart and are very hard workers,” said Puckett. “I am excited to be a part of a great program.”
