THE OPPONENT THROUGH THE EYES OF AN EMAD
Sandpoint Varsity Assistant Coach Chris Lassen, said Talley is an outstanding running back and the team runs a good offensive scheme. “Their formation is virtually a clone of what Sandpoint High School runs,” said Coach Lassen, who adds that East Valley’s best plays are lead and counter tray. “They are also successful at trick plays.” Tajan agrees.
L
ike last season, the East Valley Knights will again be the first opponent for the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs. But that is where the Bulldogs hope the similarities between last season and this one end.
“The Knights boast a powerful I-formation, run oriented offense and maintain a stingy 40 style defense which stems, slants and sends multiple linebackers on stunts a great deal of the time,” said Tajan. “Oddly enough, under the direction of new Head Coach Satini Puailoa, the Bulldogs fundamentally mirror much of the same football flavor as the Knights.”
Last year the Knights defeated the Bulldogs in the season opener in Spokane by a score of 37-13 and ended the season with an overall record of 4 wins and 5 losses. Returning as head coach for East Valley is Adam Fisher who is in his 13th year with the team.
Coach Lassen calls East Valley a well-coached and welldisciplined team. According to Greg Lee, a sports writer for the Spokesman Review, East Valley returns with 15 starters.
Bulldog Assistant Coach Crosby Tajan said the Knights are members of the Great Northern League which consists of 2A schools, which is the equivalent of Idaho’s 4A, within the Eastern Washington Region.
“East Valley uses an I formation offense and 4-3 base defense,” said Lee who adds that East Valley is among the favorites to with the Great Northern League title.
The Knights are led by two seniors who have started for Coach Fisher since they were sophomores. Taylor Watkins became the starting quarterback and Adam Talley took over at tailback during the Knights 2010, 2A play-off run.
“For the Bulldogs to be successful tonight, Sandpoint’s defense will have to find some way to contain the explosive tandem of Watkins and Talley as the Knights invade Barlow Stadium and Way Memorial Field,” said Tajan.
“Talley is an all-conference soccer and football player for the Knights,” said Tajan. “This 5’8”, 165 lb senior plays both tailback and strong safety.”
