R

yan Knowles, Head Coach Head Coach Ryan Knowles is happy to be back at his alma mater in his second year as head coach for the Sandpoint Bulldogs. A native of Sandpoint, Coach Knowles attended Sandpoint High School from the fall of 1993 before graduating in the spring of 1997. He played on the freshman team with Tom Albertson, the current Lake Pend Oreille School District Superintendent, as one of his coaches. He played junior varsity as a sophomore and was on the varsity team as a junior and senior, playing under former head coach Satini Puailoa and assistant coaches Al Beard, Don Holland, Scott Albertson, Mike McNulty and Larry Jeffres. And of course, there was Coach John Knowles, Ryan’s dad, who will join his son again this year as an assistant for the varsity team.

Coach Ryan has fond memories of his years as a Sandpoint High School Bulldog including attending summer football camp and “bringing the Bulldogs to a level of relevance.” He also worked on the Project

92 field adjacent to the high school when it first opened. His competitiveness is clear when he shared that never losing to Coeur d’Alene High School was one of his greatest memories of being a Bulldog.

He later played for the University of Idaho, where he majored in education. Since graduating from the University of Idaho, Coach Knowles has coached at the high school level at Central Valley in Spokane, two schools in Kent, Washington, and also assisted at the University of Idaho while taking classes for his master’s degree.

Since 2006 until taking the job as head coach at Sandpoint High School last year, Coach Knowles has held various coaching positions at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.

George Yarno, Jr. George Yarno brings a great deal of experience to the coaching staff of SHS. Having grown up in a football family, George played for the University of Nevada in 2003 and 2004 and went on to play for Idaho State University from 2005 to 2007.

He also played for the Boise Burn in the Arena Football League in 2008.

But it is not just playing experience that is one of Yarno’s strengths; he has coaching experience as well. He began coaching at the junior varsity level at Highland High School in Pocatello, where he coached from 2009 to 2011 before moving on to coach both the offensive and defensive lines as well as serving as the run game coordinator at Coronado High School in 2012 and 2013. Yarno returned to Highland in 2014 and coached the varsity defensive line there for two years before coming to Sandpoint in June of 2016 where he served as head coach for two years before taking last year off.

Yarno’s primary goal goes beyond the scoreboard. He wants to build the kids into successful members of the school and the community. “This is accomplished through hard work and accountability. We want to build young men with what we do inside

and outside of school and football by working hard and serving our community.”

Words of wisdom for his team: “Show up early, leave late and work as hard as you can. Do your very best at whatever task you are presented with to be sure you have no regrets after the fact.”

senior year he was captain and MVP of the team and played on both sides of the ball at outside and inside linebacker, slot and tight end.

Prior to joining the varsity coaching staff, Coach Benefield coached junior tackle for six years.

When asked what he enjoys most about coaching, Benefield responded, “I enjoy getting the players ready to compete and having them grow as high school athletes.”

Coach Benefield looks forward to building a solid core of inside linebackers who are ready to work together to be aggressive and make plays to help the entire defense to be successful.

Dylan Benefield Now in his second year as a varsity coach, Dylan Benefield brings with him experience as not only a coach but a player as well.

Coach Benefield graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1994 and began playing safety on the varsity team midway through his sophomore year. His

He adds, “Coaching should be fun, and the players should be excited knowing that when they put in the work, the results can be great. And then when it all comes together, it makes for some great football players and is exciting for all the Bulldog fans.”

Words of wisdom for his team: “It’s a great day to be a Bulldog, and you only get to play high school football one time.

Sandpoint football fans are no stranger to the last name Loutzenhiser. This will be Coach Chad Loutzenhiser’s fourth year coaching the varsity team, and he will be coaching the running backs. “We have some very talented young running backs,” said Chad. “Our goal this year is ball security and to finish strong.”

Words of wisdom for his team: “The advice I have for these athletes, and everyone, is that life is short so do what you love for as long as you can.”

“In 2008, I started coaching in the Sandpoint Jr. Tackle League,” said Coach Loutzenhiser, who served as the sophomore head coach for two years before moving to the varsity level.

“What I enjoy the most is being with these young men in a competitive environment and watching them excel in a sport that takes a lot of hard work and dedication,” said Coach Loutzenhiser, who adds that his goal for both quarterbacks and running backs will be to limit the turnovers and to successfully move the ball on the ground and in the air.

Coach Albertson said what he enjoys most about coaching at SHS is interacting with the kids. “It is enjoyable to watch them grow and become confident at their position,” said Albertson. “And with that comes success.”

He shares that one of the biggest challenges in coaching is to determine how to communicate with each player.

“Everyone is different, so you need to adapt to each player in order to communicate and educate them for their job,” he said. “Respect is earned, not demanded.”

Coach Loutzenhiser grew up in Northern California and played a variety of different sports but was especially devoted to football. He has coached his own boys for many years starting with flag football.

He said he finds it a challenge to run his construction company while also fitting in his love for coaching and football. But it is a challenge he said is worth it.

High School.

Scott Albertson A Sandpoint High School graduate, Scott Albertson will be coaching the secondary this year. Coach Albertson played football from seventh grade through his senior year. He went on to play football for Whitworth College on an athletic scholarship, where he played free safety and was a starter for the Pirates for three years. He has coached for Sandpoint High School for a total of 10 years, the highlight of which was when he coached the 1997 team - the only team to win the state championship in the history of Sandpoint

His goal for his team this year is to instill confidence on the field for each of his players. He said the best way to achieve this is by playing fast, and the only way to play fast is for each player to know his job and to react without hesitation.

Words of wisdom for his team: “If you want to be successful, it will take work.

Always be prepared and have fun while you are accomplishing your goals.”

John Knowles Coach John Knowles is no stranger to Bulldog fans. Married to his wife Janice for 44 years, John raised both of his children in Sandpoint and taught for 10 years at

life,” said John, who adds, “I have always loved teaching and coaching. Earning kids’ trust and watching their personal growth is high on the list, but being on a journey with a team is a very exciting experience. The dynamics of working with a large group on a common goal is fascinating.”

As with anything, there are challenges, and for Coach Harris it is earning the trust of the young athletes.

Words of wisdom for his team: “Don’t miss one moment of this opportunity, be involved in every part of it. High school football only happens once in your life, and it goes by fast. This is an opportunity for you to test the limits of your physical and mental toughness in a safe and controlled environment. The adults you are with truly care about you.”

Going into this season, Harris said his goal is for the boys to work hard and have fun. “Typically, if we can do those two things, all the other goals fall into place,” said Harris.

He served as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Wallace High School from 1971 to 1972 and coached at Sandpoint High School for over 30 years as the linebacker and defensive line coach for football and served as baseball’s junior varsity head coach.

“I am not a teacher and do not get to spend a lot of off-time with them which means I have to gain that trust in a very short amount of time,” he said.

Words of wisdom for his team: “Take it all in. Go to all the meetings, make it to all of the practices and, most importantly, hang out with all of your teammates. This time goes a lot faster than you think, but the camaraderie, memories and friendships will last long beyond high school.”

While coaching at SHS, John coached in every state playoff game including three championship games, winning the title in 1997, and has served on the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee for the past 15 years.

A graduate of Sandpoint High School, John was a three-year letterman in football and was a starter on both sides of the ball for two years. He was all conference his junior and senior years and was named to the All-State team his senior year. John also ran track and wrestled. His achievements were recognized when he was inducted into the Sandpoint High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He also played college football for Boise Junior College and the University of Idaho, where he was a threeyear starter and letterman.

Coach John Knowles said the reason he wants to be involved in this year’s program can be summed up in two words…Ryan Knowles. As the father of Sandpoint’s football coach, John said he would not miss a minute of watching and being a part of this journey in Ryan’s life.

“Football has been something we have shared in our lives since he was 6 years old. We both share the same values that the game of football can teach young boys and can help them to become wellbalanced and successful young men. This is more about being a mentor to teenage boys and helping them find their place in

Junior Varsity Jeremy Harris, Head Coach Coach Jeremy Harris has spent his entire football career, both as a player and a coach, in Sandpoint. As a Bulldog from 1991 to 1994, Harris began to coach the freshman linebackers his first year out of high school and has coached every level from junior high through varsity.

Coach Harris currently serves as the head coach of the junior varsity team and will also coach the varsity defensive line this season.

He shares that what he enjoys most about coaching are the relationships he builds with the young men he mentors.

“As a coach, it is our job to, hopefully, leave some sort of impact on their lives.

I don’t think the kids realize or know the extent they are making an impact on the coaches’ lives as well,” said Coach Harris. “I get to share in their new stories, excitement, joy, trust and success and also their fears, anxieties and failures.

This is truly what keeps me coming back year after year.”

Matt Waterous A 2005 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Matt Waterous played for the Bulldogs while in high school and began to coach in 2015. He has coached both the sophomore and freshman teams.

This year, Coach Waterous is coaching wide receivers and JV offense.

“I am really enjoying being part of a football program again,” said Waterous, who is in his third year as coach of the junior varsity team. “There is nothing else quite like it.”

According to Coach Waterous, the most difficult part about coaching is figuring out how to connect with and motivate each player. “Each kid is unique, and what works for some won’t work for others,” he said.

Words of wisdom for his team: “Enjoy each day spent as a high school football player because it will be over faster than you can imagine.”

Coach Coon said what he sees as the biggest challenge is transitioning players and parents from the junior tackle levels to a high school level. He shared that the number of players for one team goes up, and he and his coaching staff find it challenging to develop an approach that will allow all players the opportunity to play.

Looking ahead to the season, Coach Coon said he has three goals: First is for all the players and parents to learn; second is for all the players and parents to have fun; and third is to win.

Freshman Corey Coon, Head Coach Freshman head coach Corey Coon is looking forward to his second year as head coach of the freshmen team at Sandpoint High School. Coach Coon has coached both freshman and junior varsity football teams at SHS and has also coached YMCA football.

“As freshman coaches, we will be helping on all sides of the ball,” said Coach Coon.

“But my main focus will be defense.”

There are many things Coach Coon enjoys about coaching football, among them is the opportunity to watch young men grow and develop as both players

“I define ‘win’ in a lot of ways,” said Coach Coon. “We could talk about school, home, practice field and game day,” he said.

Quentin Ducken A 1998 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Quentin Ducken is happy to be coaching for his alma mater under his former teammate, Ryan Knowles. Ducken started playing his sophomore year where he played on the defensive line and as a receiver. His junior year he played on the defensive line and at the fullback position

“As a senior, I was the starting center on the ‘97 state champion team where we defeated Eagle 24-21, a game I will never forget!” said Coach Ducken.

He brings extensive coaching experience to the team having coached flag football for three years, Sandpoint junior tackle for four years and Sandpoint High School freshman for two years. He then coached JV for three years, including two years ago when he was the head coach for the JV team, and they went 6-3. He most recently coached varsity for the past three years.

coaching football is being able to interact with, influence, and help kids learn and develop into athletes and young men. I love being able to coach my boys and watch them grow and develop! Also, I get to be on the sideline and help with the game because there’s no better place to be at a football game,” said Coach Ducken, who adds one of the biggest challenges is to get a group of players to play as one as well as learning the new offense and executing it well.

His goal for the season is to create a brotherhood among the team that will last beyond the field. Coach Ducken said he also plans to continue with the three other goals: learn, have fun and win!

“I plan on teaching them so they will be able to move up in the program with confidence.”

What most people may not realize is the extensive time commitment coaching takes, and that has proved to be the biggest challenge for Coach Holt. “No matter how much my wife and family understand, the football season is still long, and it takes a toll on them,” he said.

Holt’s goals for this year include helping the players to understand that football is just another stop on the long road in life.

“It is a place where they can practice life skills along the way,” said Coach Holt.

Words of wisdom for his team: “Learn to carry on. Put one foot in front of the other and keep striving for excellence.”

His goal for his players this year is to teach them how to prepare, why preparation is important and what they need to think about as they approach an activity or a problem. “It’s very vague, but I want them to have a plan for every practice on what they want to accomplish.”

Words of wisdom for his team: “The thing that separates the champions from the losers is work ethic.”

Troy Holt As a coach of the Sandpoint High School freshman team, Coach Troy Holt brings more than 20 years of coaching experience. He coached Sandpoint Middle School football from 1997 to 2004 before going onto coach at both the junior varsity and varsity level at SHS from 2005 to 2012. During that time, he coached the offensive line and was the offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012. He spent 2013-2014 as offensive coordinator for Bonners Ferry before returning to SHS where he has coached the freshman team from 2015 to the present.

Coaching is something about which Coach Holt is passionate, especially when it comes to the interaction among the coaches and athletes. “I enjoy the camaraderie that happens between players and coaches in addition to how

A 2012 graduate of Sandpoint High School and a member of the Bulldog varsity team his junior and senior years, Kevin Hutchens will coach the linebackers and running backs this year. Two years ago, Coach Hutchens was the offensive and defensive line coach for the junior varsity team and is happy to be back this year and is looking forward to working with the freshmen.

As a former Sandpoint High School Bulldog, Coach Lyon is happy to be coaching again this year at his alma mater. After leaving SHS, Lyon went on to play football for the Air Force Academy. In addition to coaching football, Coach Lyon is a science teacher at Sandpoint Middle School.

A business and marketing teacher at Sandpoint High School, Coach Hutchens said he especially enjoys the opportunity to teach the kids and get to know them outside the classroom setting.

“You get more opportunities to get to know the kids on a more personal level,” said Hutchens. “It’s nice to be able to connect with them and teach them about how to prepare for things in life as well as football.

You get to know the player on a different level and help them reach what they want to achieve in life.”

Coach Hutchens shares that the biggest challenge when it comes to coaching is

Jarrett attended the University of Idaho, and in addition to his studies, he served as the equipment manager for both the University of Idaho Vandal’s football team and the Sandpoint Bulldogs.

These are all words to describe Jarrett Robson, a fixture on the Sandpoint High School football staff who is beginning his 21st year in the position for SHS.

Of his two-decade long role, Jarrett said, “I love working with student athletes and seeing them grow into young men.” He adds that it means a lot to him to be part of that process.

Words of wisdom to his team: “Remember that how you prepare yourself here at Sandpoint High School determines how you carry yourself out there in the real world. Be accountable in everything that you do.”

Jarrett, also known as “Jer Bear” to many, takes great pride in his role as equipment manager. “My goal is to let the coaches coach by allowing them to focus on the ‘Xs and Os,’” said Jarrett.

Jarrett graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1997 after moving to Sandpoint two years prior. He graduated along with

Coach Ryan Knowles A preview of the 2019 season

W

hat a difference a year makes. When Sandpoint High School varsity football head coach Ryan Knowles arrived in Sandpoint a year ago, he says the biggest challenge was quickly familiarizing himself with his players.

Joining this experienced trio will be Ryan’s dad, John Knowles, who will coach the defensive line; Scott Albertson as coach of the defensive backs; Chad Loutzenhiser as running back coach; and Dylan Benefield, who will coach the linebackers.

“That first part was tough. Part of being a coach is knowing your players.

That’s why I coach, to build relationships, and that takes time,” said Coach Knowles. “Now I’ve built relationships with a lot of people, but most importantly with the players.”

He has spent a year watching those players run, lift and handle adversity both on and off the field. And now that he has a firm understanding of his core players, he is looking forward to this season. “We are getting back to winning. That’s exciting,” said Coach Knowles.

From freshmen to varsity, Coach Knowles has assembled a coaching staff that gives him confidence that the upcoming season will be one of hard work and success.

New to this year’s varsity staff is Jeremy Thielbahr, who will be the offensive coordinator, quarterback coach and will also be coaching the wide receivers.

No stranger to Sandpoint, Thielbahr graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1997 where he played football, baseball and ran track. He broke school records and was named to the All-Inland Empire League, All-North Idaho and All-State teams in addition to receiving many other recognitions. He went on to play for Washington State as well as serving as a graduate assistant coach. Most recently he coached at Eastside Catholic in Sammamish, Washington, where he has won three state titles in the last five seasons.

Assisting Coach Knowles at varsity will be former Bulldog head coach George Yarno, a return that has Knowles very excited. “He is a tremendous coach and really relates well with the players,” he said of Yarno, who will coach the offensive line.

The junior varsity team will be led by Jeremy Harris, who will serve as head coach as well as the defensive coordinator and varsity defensive line assistant coach. Assisting Harris on junior varsity is Matt Waterous, who will be the offensive coordinator and the assistant wide receiver coach for the varsity team.

Knowles said he likes the diversity of opponents in the upcoming season.

“We replaced the Canadian games this year with two Washington games.

It is better for consistency,” he explained, highlighting the fact that the Canadians have different rules, so those games have not always been played by the American football rules and regulations.

“The JV and varsity teams practice together so that we can maximize the development for the younger guys. That’s our future,” said Coach Knowles.

The biggest challenge heading into the season, said Knowles, is how fast the Bulldogs can get up to speed with their new offensive system under Coach Thielbahr. There is new terminology, verbiage and plays they will need to learn.

The freshman team is led by Corey Coon, with Quentin Ducken, Troy Holt, Kevin Hutchens and Sean Lyon as his assistants.

“We also need to eliminate giving up the big play. We need to sack the quarterback more and need to take care of the ball more on special teams. It all comes down to taking care of the ball.”

“This is a great coaching staff all the way around. We have guys in places where we can really raise the bar,” said Coach Knowles.

Looking ahead, part of what Coach Knowles is doing to develop the future of his teams is to form a Sandpoint Middle School football team next year. “We will definitely do eighth grade and hopefully seventh grade can join the party,” he said. “It’s a big step forward for this community.”

The freshman team attended a camp in Post Falls in early June, facing off against teams such as Coeur d’Alene, Lakeland, Timberlake and Post Falls. “They did great things on both sides of the ball.

Many of them have been lifting weights since December,” said Coach Knowles of the then eighth graders who were coming in after school to prepare for high school football.

While skill is a big factor when it comes to success on the field, so are determination and hard work. When it comes to playing time, Knowles said he looks at each case individually, but his goal is to have all his players be hard workers and skilled at their position.

This year, Knowles made the decision to have the varsity team return to the Border League, where the players attended a camp in late June. They played at University High School, Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, scrimmaging against various teams where Knowles said they performed extremely well. Then on Thursday and Friday of that week they traveled to Eastern Washington University, where they scrimmaged against many high-caliber Northwest teams.

“When the talent meets the hard work, you have a special team, and that’s what we will base this season off of,” said Knowles. “We use our core, but you win with all the other players.”

Going into the season, Coach Knowles stated that, while the team has many strengths, he sees the biggest one being the offensive line. “Brandon Casey will lead the way for us there,” he said.

While he lost two linemen to graduation, he said most of the offensive line will play both sides of the ball, giving the team a strong defensive line as well.

There was no summer off for this hardworking coach. He was in the weight room every day from 8 to 11am helping his players train and planning for the upcoming season. He sets high goals and expectations and says it’s the least he can do for his players.

“I want every aspect of this team to be all-state—from photography to the players to our coaches,” said Coach Knowles. “That’s a little overwhelming, but that’s what the kids deserve, and that’s what I’ll expect.”

I

t has been a tradition for many years and one that keeps the Sandpoint High School football team going strong year after year. After all, who wouldn’t want an old classic car to call their own?

Each year, Sandpoint football players sell raffle tickets so that one lucky winner can drive away with a prized possession. And this year was no different as the generosity of the community again came through allowing the Sandpoint Football Foundation to raise a great deal of money to assist with the purchase of equipment and more for our local football athletes through its annual car raffle.

After purchasing the 1979 Chevy Corvette in Spokane, the restoration work, which was made possible by generous donations from Taylor & Sons Chevrolet, JC Auto Detailing and Gerred Campbell, began. Soon thereafter football players of all ages, from the high school team down to the three youth leagues, began to sell tickets, which were $5 each.

Players, donned in their jerseys, were seen going door to door, and they took over the streets of Downtown Sandpoint during the Lost in the ‘50s weekend in mid-May. The drawing, which took place on Sunday of that weekend, revealed that a local resident, Gary Finney, was the winner.

Each athlete receives credit for the tickets he sells, allowing him to purchase the equipment and gear he needs including T-shirts, shorts, hoodies, compression shorts, gloves and more. It takes hundreds of dollars to properly outfit each player to ensure they are properly protected, especially when it comes to protecting against concussions.

In addition to locals and tourists purchasing tickets, many businesses and individuals stepped forward to purchase blocks of tickets, showing their support for the players.

Going into his second year as head coach of the varsity team, Coach Knowles says this is a tradition he plans to continue and was pleased with the team’s effort in ticket sales.

Jessica has coached recreational cheer for about five years and joined the staff at Sandpoint High School last December as the team was preparing for upcoming competitions.

“I am so proud of what they were able to accomplish, learning all new routines in a very limited amount of time and earning their way to the state finals,” said Coach Stephany. “They also had to work together to get through the transition of having a new coach, which is not an easy task in the middle of the year. This year I am most excited to see the team grow in skills and strength. We will be working hard to earn another trip to Boise!”

Coach Stephany said she believes that cheerleaders offer an important part of the overall high school experience.

“I want to help instill community and school spirit. We have so much to offer, and I want the cheer team to share a bigger part.”

Depending upon the season, there will be anywhere from 15 to 20 cheerleaders on the squad, which cheers for football and basketball as well as some of the wrestling matches. In addition, they attend three to four competitions prior to competing at districts.

It takes a lot of commitment to participate in cheer with practices year-round, from 4:30 to 6:30pm two days a week in the summer as well as during the school year.

According to Coach Stephany, the tentative plan is for the team to attend the following competitions:

And no matter how they place, there is one thing Coach Stephany knows for sure. The cheer squad will bring a great deal of enthusiasm to everything they do.

Remembered An Athlete’s memory lives on

housands of students have passed through the doors of the Sandpoint High School Field House over the course of the last 26 years, but how many really know the story behind it? The passion and dedication of the community who mourned the loss of a young 17-year-old student and cultivated a way to ensure this young man’s memory lived on?

Greg and Laurel’s other sons were also very athletic. Brett, their middle child, played soccer, baseball and football. Chad, the youngest Taylor, also played soccer and football and was on the Bulldog’s State Championship football team.

The Tucker Taylor Field House is named in honor of the son of Greg and Laurel Taylor. Tucker passed away on January 2, 1993, after a tragic skiing accident at Schweitzer Mountain. He was the oldest of the Taylors’ three sons and was loved by all who knew him.

“I can say with certainty that Tucker was one of the most dedicated athletes we had on the Sandpoint Bulldog football team at the time,” recalls his close friend and teammate Zach Libby. “While we didn’t have the biggest or toughest players, we had a core set of dedicated players that continually pushed each other. Among this set of players, Tucker was by far the most dedicated.”

The family moved to Sandpoint from Coquille, Oregon, in 1987 when Tucker was just 12 years old. “He had so many good friends, so it was hard for him to move,” said Laurel. “But Sandpoint was a great fit for him. He loved the beach and the ski hill.”

When they first arrived in Sandpoint, Tucker had never skied. “He took lessons and, when he felt confident, he was off skiing and made his short, lifelong friends,” said Laurel.

She recalls her son as the kind of person who was always there for his friends. “He had a kind heart and was a great listener. He had a huge, great laugh and a never-ending smile. He was a teenager but was always respectful to adults, including us, his mom and dad. He was the kid that put his goals on his wall so he could see them first thing in the morning.”

But Tucker, he was all football.

Zach said he always knew that if he couldn’t get a hold of Tucker at his house, he could find him at Sandpoint West Athletic Club lifting weights. “And he probably analyzed film more than anyone on our team—coaches included. But his work paid off in practices and games where he routinely played both offense and defense.”

And it wasn’t just the players who respected him. The coaches did too. “He was the kind of kid who made you want to coach,” said assistant football coach John Knowles in an interview shortly after Tucker’s death. “He played football for the right reasons and always looked for ways to help others.”

When Tucker passed away, he left a void in the hearts of many.

Knowing his passion for football, it made perfect sense to do something related to the sport in Tucker’s memory.

“Building the field house and adjoining fields had been talked about by the Bulldog Bench athletic boosters club for some time and was actually called Project 92,” said Tucker’s dad, Greg.

“Shortly after Tucker passed away, I decided that I would make this project happen, first by taking the area between the Sandpoint Middle School and the high school track and developing that area into a football field.”

The area was originally a dump site which had been covered and then overgrown, becoming basically a pasture. With donations of fill material and equipment from Larry Peak and his father in addition to equipment used from Greg’s farming operation, they began the work on the approximately 100,000-square-foot area.

By late August 1993 the field was ready for sod. “On August 26, 1993, several of Tucker’s friends, brothers Brett and Chad, and Laurel and I laid the first pieces of sod. This would have been Tucker’s 18th birthday,” said Greg.

It was their own “field of dreams,” and the whole community turned out to help. “Our town is incredible, and we will never forget their support,” said Laurel gratefully. of kid who made

“Greg would work there every night. He did all the site work with the help of a few friends, Rich Neher being one of them,” said Laurel. “Greg hauled truck load after truck load of dirt.”

A few days later several hundred people showed up, and in four hours the laying of sod was complete. “I remember setting sprinklers that evening and just sitting there and thinking how Tucker would have been proud of what we had accomplished,” said Greg.

But they weren’t through.

While constructing the field house had been a goal of Bulldog Bench, the funds had not yet been raised. Greg and Laurel had set up a Tucker Taylor Memorial Fund to which they had contributed, among other things, Tucker’s college funds. “Donations had come in from throughout the community, plus I had talked to many people that I had done business with over the years and had received substantial donations or commitments to help construct the field house,” said Greg.

With the help of John Knowles, Greg got to work. With volunteers, including Bruce Sletager, who did the painting; Gail Lyster, who produced the tile Bulldog on the front of the building; and John Akins and a masonry crew from Spokane, who laid the bricks in the entryway which lists the names of donors, the project was complete.

That was November of 1996, nearly four years after Tucker’s passing, and although some additional interior work was completed over the next few years, the building was ready to be used by hundreds of students on a daily basis.

The Tucker Taylor Field House has been home to thousands of athletes and has become a place where they create a bond and push and encourage one another to do their best. Reflecting, Zach said his friend Tucker had a level of introspection and drive that he always admired. “I love how that is now reflected ideals of the field house,” said Zach of the lasting legacy to his friend.

One of Ryan Knowles’ first acts as coach last fall was to initiate a complete overhaul of the Tucker Taylor Field House. From fresh paint to brand new equipment, it is a beautiful tribute to the memory of a young man who touched this community, including Coach Knowles.

In addition, the cost of shipping the new equipment was covered by Litehouse, Inc., who used one of its trucks to transport it all from the Midwest.

When all was said and done, the newly renovated Tucker Taylor Field House was revealed in February at an open house, and Coach Knowles wanted to be sure that the Taylor family was recognized.

“We were at the open house. Ryan is such a good man and coach,” said Laurel. “He brought me a No. 41 football jersey and said he is not going to use that number for games. Ryan was just a little guy when he knew Tucker.”

Knowles is thrilled to have such an amazing place for athletes and physical education students to train and is proud of the transformation of the place that holds Tucker’s name.

“As I now look at the building and adjoining field and see what Ryan Knowles has done to bring it up to its current sparkling condition, I can see the twinkle in Tucker’s eyes and smile on his face knowing that thousands of students have passed through these facilities over the past 26 years, all as a result of a huge community outpouring over his untimely passing,” he said. “It will always be a special place to the Taylor family.”

“I travel all over the state with our track team,” said Coach Knowles of his role as a track coach, “and people are talking about our weight room. It’s state of the art.”

It is the support of a wonderful community and people like Ryan Knowles that keeps Tucker’s memory alive in the heart of the Taylor family. And they still love hearing those memories of Tucker.

“The overwhelming love and support after he passed makes me feel that he was respected,” said Laurel. “His teachers told us of his willingness to learn and achieve. Mike McNulty said, ‘He was a good friend to many types of people and a genuine person. He had a knack to make us laugh and giving his opinion no matter how different from others.’”

So next time you walk into the Tucker Taylor Field House, whether it is to attend a workout, practice or class, remember the young man who touched so many lives.

“He is missed by so many,” said Laurel. “He is my heart.”

As for Greg, he knows his son is smiling upon those SHS athletes.

aurie Buck is in her fourth year of coaching the Sandpoint High School dance team, and she could not be more pleased with the squad she is coaching this year.

“This year, our team has many dancers from private studios, so all our dancers have dance training,” said Coach Buck of the team which practiced with 15 members over the summer and will add an additional team member when an exchange student joins the squad in September.

She says her team is strong and possesses great technique, flexibility and strength.

“So far, our team can learn a routine in one to two practices and clean it up in half the time from previous years due to the many years of dance they have had.”

In addition to the background in dance, some of the members of this year’s dance team also possess tumbling skills and can perform advanced turns and jumps, something Coach Buck said should make for a very exciting year.

The training that Buck provides, along with the countless hours of practice the team puts in, have led to many of her dancers going on to perform at the collegiate level as well.

While many sports are seasonal, dance is a year-round commitment and one these young women take very seriously.

They practice two days a week during the summer for two to three hours, and during the school year they arrive at school each morning at 6:30am and practice until school begins.

Buck says the team also practices Saturdays when preparing for competition dances and also attends four local competitions as well as state.

BULLDOG BENCH BESTOWS MANY BLESSINGS

The Sandpoint community has a lot to be thankful for. We live in a beautiful town where friends and neighbors are friendly and helpful, and great organizations are plentiful with committed volunteers doing their part to make a difference in the lives of others.

One such organization is the Bulldog Bench, the booster club for Sandpoint High School whose efforts do much to support youth athletics. While the myth has long been that “the Bench” is a booster club strictly for the football team, nothing could be further from the truth.

“We try to support every sport and fill in where Lake Pend Oreille School District cannot,” said longtime Bulldog Bench member and former Bench president Bob Witte.

Witte credits Gene Littlefield, who passed away in 2012, for making the Bulldog Bench what it is today. Gene grew up in Bonners Ferry and, after fighting in World War II, eventually settled in Sandpoint.

He was interested in meeting new people and attended a Bulldog Bench meeting. “He walked out an hour later and was president,” said

Witte of the 1951 meeting. Littlefield continued to be involved with the Bench at some level for over 50 years. “Gene WAS the Bulldog Bench,” said Witte gratefully.

Matt Mire, a former Sandpoint High School athlete, serves on the Bulldog Bench and says it is his way of giving back to his community.

“SHS Athletics helped shape my life, which is why I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute time and energy back into the various programs through Bulldog Bench,” said

“We contributed just shy of $40,000 in 2018 and about $24,000 in 2017,” said Mire, who also serves as the organization’s treasurer.

Some of the more recent expenditures include the following: · $500 for softball and $1,100 to baseball donated to help cover travel costs for games that had to be played out of town due to early season inclement weather in Sandpoint · $3,400 donated to track for equipment · $25,000 donated for the new equipment for the weight room remodel. (This is something from which all sports and physical education classes benefited.) · $1,900 to the football team for camera equipment · $3,500 to both the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs for a shooting machine · $2,000 to the wrestling team for a scale · $2,500 to cheerleading for new mats

· $3,300 donated to girls’ soccer for equipment. · Approximately $3,000 to $5,000 is donated each year to pay for meals for teams that qualify to travel to state.

But the support the Bulldog Bench offers does not stop there. The group awards five scholarships each year including an academic award to both a male and female in the amount of $1,000 each as well as the David Jenkins Scholarship to a male and female in the amount of $1,000 each.

The David Jenkins Scholarship was named after the Sandpoint resident and Bulldog supporter who died in 2010. In spite of physical challenges, Jenkins displayed the true spirit of a Bulldog, attending as many games as possible and cheering on the young athletes. Many in the community, especially the young athletes, loved him. According to Bob Witte, this scholarship is awarded to both the male and female athlete who best exemplify Jenkins’ spirit.

“It’s not necessarily (awarded to) the greatest athlete, but instead the one who was an active participant and a good role model,” explained Witte.

The Bulldog Bench also awards the David Lyon Memorial Scholarship—a $2,500 scholarship named for the former Sandpoint High School athlete who died in 2013 while serving his country. The scholarship is presented to the student who best exemplifies Lyon’s high moral character and leadership qualities.

The recipient for 2018/2019 was Riley Walkington, who played on the Bulldogs’ girls’ soccer team.

So just how does the Bulldog Bench raise its money? Their primary fundraisers are golf tournaments held in both the spring and fall, which have proven to be not only a lot of fun but very successful as well.

SHS Activities Director Kris Knowles said he is grateful for all the help the Bench provides so that young athletes and their coaches can continue to participate in the activities they love.

second year on the varsity team. He says what he enjoys most about the game of football is the team bonding that occurs as well as the lessons that the game teaches.

After graduating from Sandpoint High School, Jackson plans to attend college where he will pursue a business degree.

When asked what his favorite subject is, he said math “because it is logical and there is only one right answer.”

Jake Suhr - Jake Suhr, who plays on both the offensive and defensive lines, has been playing football for nine years and says what he enjoys most about the sport is the competition. He plans to attend college at the University of Idaho and would love the opportunity to play football at the collegiate level.

Being an athlete is a great commitment, and Jake certainly has that quality as he participates in sports year-round as a member of SHS’s wrestling and track teams.

He says his favorite subject in school is welding due to the fact they are able to create many different projects. When not participating in sports, Jake enjoys his spare time by hanging out with friends and family.

Entering into his final year as a Bulldog, Jake is looking forward to playing football one last year with all his teammates and said his best memory to date has been beating Lakeland.

In his spare time, Jackson takes full advantage of the area he calls home by spending time in the summer on the water wake surfing and skiing in the winter.

He is looking forward to his final season as a Bulldog and shares that his goal is to reach the state championship. In order to achieve that, the Bulldogs will have to relive one of last season’s best memories for Jackson—beating Lakeland. “We went into the game ready to win, and we won,” he said.

Tyler Lehman - Playing both linebacker and running back, Tyler Lehman is now in his ninth year of football and third on the varsity team. He shares that the aspect he enjoys most about football is the opportunity to compete with his friends.

In addition to playing football, Tyler is a standout on the Bulldog’s baseball team, a sport he hopes to continue at the collegiate level.

While there have been many coaches throughout the years who have influenced Tyler, he said the ones who have been most influential are his younger brothers.

“They are brutally honest, and we are always trying to help each other improve.”

Advice to younger players: “No one cares if you make a mistake, just make an adjustment and make the next play.”

Jackson Prior - Jackson Prior, a center for the Bulldogs, began to play football in the sixth grade in junior tackle and is in his

Jackson credits Coach George Yarno for teaching him the value of a strong work ethic. “He also taught me about integrity,” shares Jackson.

Jake is grateful to both Coach Knowles and Coach Yarno, who he says have kept him focused during the off-season.

Going into his final season of football, Tyler said he is looking forward to his class having a breakout year. “We have worked really hard in the weight room for three years, and now we get to show it!”

In his spare time, Tyler enjoys being in the outdoors with his friends and brothers— which likely explains why biology is his favorite subject. “I love understanding how the world around me works,” he said.

Jaxon Pettit - Football has been a part of Jaxon Pettit’s life since he was in the fourth grade. He played five years of junior tackle, and this year will be his third on the Bulldogs’ varsity team. “The thing I enjoy most about football is being able to compete with your friends in such a unique situation that can’t be replicated anywhere else,” said Jaxon, who plays quarterback.

In addition to football, Jaxon has also played baseball, varsity basketball and ran track.

After graduating in the spring, Jaxon will serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Following his mission, he will likely attend college at Boise State.

In addition to keeping busy with sports, Jaxon says he enjoys following the Utah Jazz and the NBA, riding horses, playing the piano, swimming and being with his friends and family.

As Jaxon heads into his final year of football, he shares that he is looking forward to seeing nine years of work and practice culminate into what is hopefully

his best, most successful and most memorable season yet.

Looking back on his years in sports, Jaxon says his best football memory to date took place his sophomore year in the league championship game in Moscow. “We played in a cold and windy game which we won, and I set a school record with 377 passing yards in one game and tied the record for passing touchdowns with five.”

Jaxon says the coach who has been most influential over the years is his dad, Tyler Pettit, who coached him throughout junior tackle and his freshman year. “He gave me a good foundation with mechanics and taught me mental toughness. One thing my dad has ingrained in me is to never give up, don’t be afraid of hard work and don’t take criticism from people you would not go to for advice.”

Advice to younger players: “Work hard, don’t be stupid, and don’t be intimidated by being younger….You will go a lot further if you don’t mentally limit yourself because you are younger than the older guys…

Also, when you become a senior, don’t forget how you felt being on the outside; include the younger guys and be kind.”

Sam Puckett - As a senior on this year’s varsity team, Sam Puckett will be playing his ninth year of football.

“But if I was to pick a ‘real’ course, it would be math because I’m pretty good at it and it comes easier to me than most of the other classes.”

An avid outdoorsman, Sam enjoys surfing, fishing, hiking, boating, skiing and hanging out with his friends.

As he heads into his final year, he is looking forward to creating new memories with all the boys who have been with him through the best and worst of times. And as Sam reflects on those memories, he says the highlight to date took place his freshman year.

“We were playing Lake City away, and I received the ball on the first kickoff and ran it all the way to the one-yard line. Then we scored to open up the game. That was probably one of the best football memories I have created throughout my years of playing,” said Sam. And while there have been many coaches who have influenced him over the years, Sam said he is most grateful to Coach Wayne (Fulford). “When he coached me, he always pushed me harder than I thought I could go, and it has taught me that you can do a lot more than you initially think you can.”

Advice to younger players: “You need to work hard if you want the season to go in a good way, but that grind is most important when you don’t feel like going in in the morning and lifting in the summer and when you make up something to get you out of running. If you want to be a good team, make sure you push yourselves to overcome the things you don’t want to do so when you reach the start of the season, you will crush the other teams.”

A wide receiver, Ryan is entering his sixth year of football. He played one year of junior tackle, one year on the freshman team, one year on junior varsity and will be in his second year on the varsity team.

In addition to playing football, Ryan also plays lacrosse and says he enjoys history the most out of any other subject in school.

“I like getting to learn about the people before you,” said Ryan, who plans to attend an out-of-state four-year university after graduating from SHS in the spring.

In his spare time, Ryan says he enjoys wake surfing and hanging out with his friends.

As he heads into his final year of high school, Ryan says he looks forward to competing with his teammates at a high level and playing well as a team.

When asked about his best memory to date when it comes to playing football, it wasn’t a moment or a play that occurred on the field, rather it was a play by a coach.

“It was in eighth grade when Coach Owen Rust smashed a watermelon to get us motivated,” shared Ryan.

The coach who influenced Ryan the most was former SHS coach Mat McDonald.

“He has not only coached me in the game of football but he helped me to mature as a man,” said Ryan.

Advice to younger players: “Find what makes you flip that switch on the field and perfect it.”

“What I love most about playing football are the memories you get to create with your teammates,” said the outside linebacker.

In addition to playing football, Sam also plays lacrosse. As for his post-secondary plans, he plans to attend Boise State University where he will study either business or engineering.

When asked what his favorite subject is in school, there leaves no doubt about his commitment to sports.

“The weight room is definitely the best because I get a whole period of the day to work out with all my friends,” said Sam.

Dylan Peterson - There are many things about football which senior Dylan Peterson enjoys, but above all it is the friendships he has made throughout six years playing the sport.

Ryan Bloomberg - “The pure competition between opponents and dominating the person across from you.” That is what senior Ryan Bloomberg says he enjoys most about the game of football.

A versatile player, Dylan plays linebacker, kicker, punter and fullback for the Sandpoint Bulldogs, and he also plays lacrosse.

His future plans include going to college to study education with the goal of becoming a teacher. He says what he enjoys most about his studies at Sandpoint High School are the history classes he has taken. “It’s interesting to learn how we got to where we are,” said Dylan.

When not in school or playing football or lacrosse, Dylan said he enjoys “hanging out with the boys and enjoying the wonders of North Idaho—especially the lake.”

While there are many things to look forward to this season, Dylan shares that what he is most looking forward to is the excitement of senior year and translating all the work he and his team have done during the offseason to have that “Friday Night Lights” feeling again!

His favorite football memory to date did not take place on the field, rather he says it was the bus ride to Lewiston.

Dylan expressed his gratitude to Coach Wayne Fulford, who Dylan says taught him how to persevere in not just football but in life as well.

Advice to younger players: “No matter how hard the training is, the feeling of Friday night lights makes it all worth it, so stick with it!”

In addition to playing football, Brandon also plays basketball and is on the Bulldogs’ track team. He shares that his favorite class has been anatomy and physiology. “I enjoy seeing and understanding how the body works,” said Brandon.

When he is not busy with his year-round sports, Brandon enjoys skiing, riding motorcycles and spending time on the lake.

His favorite memory to date, he says, was beating Lakeland last year at Lakeland’s homecoming game. It’s a memory he hopes to top this year as he said he looks forward to making a run at the state championship.

“What I enjoy most is the bond you have with your brothers on and off the field,” said Brandon, who plays both offensive tackle and defensive end.

Brandon has played football a total of seven years, beginning with junior tackle and culminating this year with his second year on the varsity team.

Walker Herrmann - Playing running back and corner for the Bulldogs, senior Walker Herrmann said what he enjoys most about the game of football is the lessons it teaches him.

Like many other of his teammates, Walker also is on the SHS track team, something which allows him to stay in shape and train in the off-season.

Walker says the biggest moment in his football career so far was when he returned a kickoff for over 100 yards and made a touchdown. And as far as this year is concerned, he is most looking forward to “ending his football career with a bang.”

In his spare time, Walker shares that he enjoys being in the outdoors—whether it is wake surfing, dirt bike riding, skiing,

William Treadway - Having played football for the past six years, William Treadway, who plays defensive end, says what he enjoys most is being part of a team. And he’s not just part of the varsity football team; William also plays basketball and lacrosse, keeping him very active yearround.

He shares that his most memorable moment so far in his football career was when he had his first tackle against Post Falls during his first game as part of the varsity team.

William says he hopes to add to those memories this year by earning a chance to go to state.

Still undecided as to where he will attend college, William says his favorite subject is history as it provides him the opportunity to learn about the past, including important historical events.

When asked about what coach has influenced him the most, William replied that it was Coach Wayne Fulford. “He taught me that when I think I can’t do any more, I can push through and keep going.”

Advice to younger players: “Work as hard as you can every day and lift as much as you can. And when you get the opportunity, take it.”

Christian Niemela - Although Christian Niemela has been playing football since he was a young child, he said his passion for the sport really began with the backyard games he had with his dad and brother Noah. “Growing up, my dad hosted backyard football games for all of the kids in the neighborhood for many years,” said Christian.

A diverse player, Christian plays wide receiver, defensive back, special teams and is a kickoff and punt returner.

“I love the competitive aspect (of football) and being a warrior alongside my teammates and coaches,” said Christian. “I love the friendships and bonding with my guys, the hitting and tackling on defense, the strategy and scoring on offense, the Friday night lights with family, friends and fans.”

Although he has yet to decide where he will attend college, Christian has offers from two schools thus far. He says he has diverse career interests including business and marketing, real estate, and invention and entrepreneurship.

In addition to football, Christian also plays on the SHS basketball team and is on the track team as well.

Christian is looking forward to spending one more year with the teammates he has grown up with. “We’ve grown up playing football together for many years, and we’re all competitors. I am really excited to compete my senior year and look forward to creating even more memories with these guys and the younger guys on the team.”

Although there were many great moments over the years, Christian said one of the

Connor Hutchings - Connor Hutchings is in his fourth year playing football and says he loves “the violence” that the game brings. Playing guard and nose tackle on the offensive and defensive lines gives him the opportunity to be part of some very physical plays.

Connor also plays lacrosse and says in his spare time he enjoys water sports, skiing, outdoor activities and shooting guns.

Jake Ryan - Jake Ryan loves football.

It’s a sport he has been playing since he was in third grade. He played one year of flag football and then five years of YMCA football before joining the SHS Bulldogs freshman team. He is now in his second year on the varsity team.

Jake plays safety for the Bulldogs and says what he enjoys most is being part of the team. In addition to football, Jake also is on the varsity wrestling team and is a pole vaulter for the Bulldogs’ track team.

With his favorite subject at school being computer-aided drafting and design (CADD), it is no surprise that Jake will attend college and pursue a degree in architecture.

Going into his final year as a Bulldog, Jake said he is looking forward to playing at Memorial Field under the lights. And as he looks back on his years of football, Jake said the one memory that stands out most came last season when he caught an interception on the first defensive play of the game.

Looking ahead, Connor says he hopes to attend Whitworth and play football with his brother who also attends and plays for the college. Following college, he plans to work with his dad.

Looking back on the past few years, Connor says the most memorable moment came last year in the Bulldogs’ game against Lakeland. “I threw the center and then made the tackle,” said Connor.

Going into his final season, Connor said he is most looking forward to winning!

Connor credits Coach Wayne Fulford with having a significant influence on him. “He reinforced what my dad has always taught me—not to back down, don’t quit. Life is not always fair, but keep fighting anyway.”

Advice to younger players: “Put in the work and don’t quit.”

Jake said he has appreciated the guidance of Coach Scott Albertson, who he said has been the most influential. “He taught me how to play hard but also how to have fun doing it,” said Jake.

NEXT LEVEL BULLDOGS BEING RECRUITED FOR COLLEGE PLAY

I

t’s something many young athletes only dream of—taking the sport they love to play to the collegiate level. After all, the process of recruitment is a grueling one, and the likelihood of attending the college of their dreams and playing ball for them does not always come to fruition. But for at least two Sandpoint High School varsity football players, they know going into the season that they have offers ensuring them a spot on a college team next year—something that is both a relief and a source of excitement.

“We had 14 recruiters come through this spring and evaluate our kids,” said Coach Knowles of the process that begins early on.

As of June, Brandon Casey, who was named offensive lineman MVP at camp this summer, has received offers from the University of Idaho, Idaho State, the University of Montana, Montana State and Eastern Washington University.

“I cannot recall anyone getting five offers at one time in our current system,” said Coach Knowles. “And it’s rare to have so many so early. But that being said, the recruiting system has changed over time.”

Although Brandon plays both defensive and offensive line, he said all the schools are recruiting him to play offensive line.

Brandon said he began the recruitment process in January of his junior year with the help of Coach Knowles, who contacted coaches on Brandon’s behalf, sending his highlight video.

“Coach Knowles has been very helpful and provided good advice as he was in the college recruiting process (in his former role as a college coach) a few years ago,” said Brandon, adding that he has wanted to play football at the college level since he was a young child.

Brandon’s first contact from a school was in March, and by June he had received offers from five schools. “I was surprised how fast it happened,” he said, adding that he will verbally commit to a school prior to the high school season after evaluating how he relates to the players and coaches of the college teams and the overall feeling he has about the campus.

The recruitment process was time consuming but one that Brandon says was well worth it. He attended several camps including Oregon State, Whitworth, University of Montana and Montana State, as well as Border League camp and a camp at Eastern Washington.

In addition, he visited five different schools. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the car,” said Brandon.

The first face-to-face visits with college recruiters came when they visited Sandpoint High School in the spring.

Brandon followed that up with the campus visits, which entailed meeting with the coaches, touring the campuses and attending the various camps.

A dedicated athlete, Brandon says one of the best pieces of advice he has received was from former varsity football head coach Satini Puailoa. “Play multiple sports,” said Brandon, who adds it is something he has always done and now that he is older has realized how much more athletic one becomes when participating in multiple sports. “You definitely need to switch it up,” he said.

And while he has enjoyed being on the basketball and track teams, Brandon said there is nothing like the bonding experience that comes with being part of a football team.

“It’s unlike any other sport. You have a camaraderie that is very special.”

In addition to Brandon, Christian Niemela has received offers from University of Puget Sound as well as Whitworth to play football next fall. It’s an honor he has worked hard to achieve.

“I first started the recruiting process freshman year during basketball season,” said Christian, who explains that one first needs to begin with putting together a highlight video featuring plays from each game. “Most coaches will only watch the first 30 seconds and recommend that it not be more than two minutes long. It’s important how you present it and want to be sure to put the big plays at the beginning.”

It takes a great deal of time and effort to be recruited.

Researching the teams, their coaches and sending out over a hundred emails to various schools is a great time commitment for players who want to be noticed. As a reflection of the age of technology, Christian says student athletes also set up Twitter accounts as that is how many of the coaches keep in touch with the players and follow them.

One thing that Christian is quick to point out is that it is more than just figuring out what football team you would like to play for at the college level; it is finding what the right fit is for you academically as well. “You have to figure out where you belong,” he said.

Christian attended a camp in May at University of Puget Sound and subsequently attended other showcase opportunities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Following Border League camp in June, he flew to San Diego to compete and toured various schools.

Getting that first offer was a huge relief for Christian. “The hard work is finally paying off. It (the recruitment process) is a lot more work than what people think.”

Christian, like Brandon, is a multi-sport athlete, something Christian said has paid off. “Track has helped me with sprinting and basketball has helped with moving side to side. Being involved in many sports teaches you to work with different people and it builds character all the way around.”

Christian says his parents have never forced sports upon him and have given him the responsibility of figuring out what is best. And above all, they have always been extremely supportive no matter what. “I don’t think they’ve ever missed a game unless there was a conflict with my brother’s schedule,” said Christian. He credits his mom with providing the support he needed in the recruitment process, helping with emails and giving him pointers when it comes to speaking with coaches.

His advice for others who have a dream like he did? “Start the process young. Knowing what I know now, I know it’s important to do a lot of research. And don’t listen to what others think you should do,” said Christian. “The best advice

I received is that it’s a journey and enjoy it while it lasts. Once I sign the letter of intent, I’ll never be recruited again. Enjoy visiting campuses and meeting new people.”

Christian says every coach in every sport has contributed in some way to his success. “Also, if it weren’t for my parents I would not be where I am today. And ultimately, I need to thank God for where I am in life and where he has placed me. It’s a blessing.”

Christian says he is keeping his options open when it comes to making his decision as where to play college ball and said first and foremost he needs to focus on the Bulldogs’ season.

“We need to work as a team. It’s ultimately a group effort,” he said of the upcoming season. “Our 2020 football class has a special bond, and we’ve always had that close relationship.

During football season that bond gets even closer, and we all know we have each other’s back. We support each other and play hard together. We are all competitors and we want to win for our coaches, our high school and the community.”

As for Brandon, he shares that he is looking forward to the challenge of playing college football and the new relationships he will make with his future teammates and coaches. He is also extremely grateful to his parents. “They are 100 percent in support of whatever decision I make, and I appreciate that.”

Want to achieve your dream of playing college football?

Brandon advises to go to as many camps as you can throughout high school and to get your name out there.
