MINIMALISM

ELIMINATING THE EXCESS

SO A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, my husband approached me about trying a “minimalist lifestyle.” Before he even started explaining what that meant, I immediately imagined living in a container house with no furniture, being dropped off at work since we’d only have one car, having to abandon all our “stuff,” and feeling unaccomplished.

In short, I felt panicked!

In reality, it was a great start to a lengthy conversation. I learned a lot about what a minimalist lifestyle really meant and how we were letting our excessiveness bog us down. Being minimalist didn’t mean that we have to live a radical lifestyle with nothing.

It just means that we keep what we really need and use regularly—and yes, I got to keep my car. Everything we don’t need, we donate, sell or throw out. It’s a process that we are still going through, but we’ve gotten rid a ton of stuff. There’s a lot of information out there about this and about dealing with sentimental items, how the whole process works and how it changes your mindset.

This part sounded funny to me, but it did

work. You are supposed to question your possessions as you are going through them. Is this something I really need? When was the last time I used it? What would happen if I got rid of it?

DON’T START TO PANIC

Some items are no brainers; if you haven’t seen it or used it within the last year, it’s gone.

You shouldn’t hold on to it as a “just in case” or a “backup” item. Last year I wrote that you should hang all your hangers one direction and then as you wear the clothes, turn the hangers around. After six months, look at the hangers and get rid of all the backwards hangers to clear out room in your closet. That could apply here as well.

Onto the household stuff. Did we really need three sets of dishes? Our kids are 10 and 11, so we decided that we’ve graduated from the plastic cups and dishes. We don’t use the china, and it was on display in the cabinet that also needed purged, so now we have more cabinet space and enjoy eating all of our meals off the “good” dishes and drink out of real glasses.

We went through the office, the garage, the living areas of the house; the kids went through their rooms, and even the laundry room was purged. We had a large garage sale and made some extra cash, donated the items that didn’t sell and tossed what we felt wasn’t worth anything.

I have to say, the whole process is pretty liberating. Our house feels so clean and put together without all that clutter. Now the real work will be to continue this lifestyle and not replace any of the things we worked so hard to get rid of.

Well, felines are even more fearful when whisked away from their beloved territory called “home.” For the last five years, North Idaho Animal Hospital has been diligently working on “taking the Pet out of Petrified,” as associate veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker astutely words it. Last year, the hospital rose to a new level, entered into specialized training for the whole team of caregivers from front to back, and became Fear Free certified—one of the first hospitals in the nation to achieve this goal.

MEMORIAL FIELD MAKEOVER Completion of grandstands on schedule for June 9 graduation. By Patty Hutchens

FOR ANYONE WHO REGULARLY DRIVES past Memorial Field, you know how exciting it is to witness the progress being made on the new grandstands. And while they are still committed to meeting the deadline for graduation on June 9, City of Sandpoint administrator, Jennifer Stapleton, said the project is about one month behind schedule.

The reason? The unusually wet weather.

“The City of Sandpoint’s five-year Local Option Tax is directly tied to the State of Idaho’s sales-tax statutes,” said Stapleton. “With the recent passage of House Bill 67a, the Grocery Tax Repeal, Sandpoint stands to lose $1.2 million of the projected revenue for this project. The construction of Barlow Stadium will be completed as promised, but the field replacement is in jeopardy with the loss of this funding stream.”

“We had trucks sunk up to their axles, and we had to build a temporary road due to soil conditions,” said Stapleton, who adds that other than the issue of climate, the project has gone smoothly and is well within budget.

According to Stapleton, the Local Option Tax brought in $1.2 million the first year, $400,000 of which came from local grocery stores. But until the decision on the tax is final, Stapleton and her team are moving forward with exploring the options for the field.

While the grandstands will be completed by graduation, other portions of the project, such as the locker rooms and the gateway, will not be due to the wet weather and the need to pour a foundation.

One of the issues that still needs to be addressed is whether there will be turf or natural grass—a decision that does not have to made for several months. One of the factors that weighs heavily on this is whether or not there will be a repeal of the grocery tax.

SHERY AND SCOTT MEEKINGS are a familiar sight at the Cedar Street Bridge in Downtown Sandpoint. They have operated the nonprofit Creations for Sandpoint since 2010 and have brought a new vibe to the iconic Downtown Sandpoint landmark. So when the opportunity to purchase Carousel Emporium on the Cedar Street Bridge came about, they could not pass it up.

“Our family has basically lived and raised our only daughter at the Cedar Street Bridge since 2010,” said Shery. Shery was not sure if the purchase of Carousel Emporium was even an option for her family, but she was encouraged when Scott told her he would be willing to help out with the Creations Museum so she could run Carousel Emporium.

“When I heard Lynda was looking to sell Carousel, I thought it would be a natural fit for our family since I worked at Carousel for a few years and had years of experience with purchasing goods and managing Creations Museum store,” said Shery.

Originally opened by Lynda Gillham in 2010, Carousel Emporium is a unique and whimsical boutique that offers an array of clothing,

Carrying on the tradition that Gillham started is something Shery looks forward to.

“We love having the opportunity to run businesses on each end of the historic Cedar Street Bridge,” said Shery, who adds that their daughter helps a lot.

While Creations continues as a community family center, it also offers children’s clothing, gifts and toys. Proceeds go to support Creations Creative Art, Discovery Play and Education community area that is now more than 3,000 square feet of The Cedar Street Bridge.

Shery said that the owners of Cedar Street Bridge, Jeff and Cindy Bond, have been a support system for the growth and success of the thriving businesses. “And of course our amazing community is the biggest support,” she said, and adds that she has enjoyed meeting the many clients who have come to be like family to her. “I can’t wait to get reacquainted with the clients at Carousel Emporium. I certainly look forward to the next chapter of my life.”

“Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.” – Robert Browning IT WAS MOTHER’S DAY just three years ago when Ashley and Ben Hawkins were filled with anticipation of their life ahead.

Ashley was 17-weeks pregnant with twin girls, and their life was about to change dramatically. But that day, their anticipation turned to fear as the amniotic sack holding one of the babies broke. At that moment, they were unsure if either of their children would survive.

The doctor told Ashley that if she could make it to 24 weeks, when the babies had a chance of being viable outside the womb, they would admit her to the hospital and monitor her closely. On the Fourth of July, Ashley was admitted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane where she spent 19 days on bed rest before giving

birth to Paisley Jo and Winnie Sue. Paisley, the daughter whose water broke on Mother’s Day, lived only 12 hours. Winnie, whose water broke during the time Ashley was on bed rest, weighed only 16 oz. That day, the couple began their 291-day journey of praying for and caring for their daughter in the neonatal intensive care unit. Ashley spent her days at the NICU bathing Winnie, holding her, pumping breast milk, singing to her daughter and doing all she could to bond with this new and delicate life. It was a journey that ended in a miracle and made the following Mother’s Day one of the most blessed days of their lives.

“We took Winnie home the day before Mother’s Day,” said Ashley,

her eyes filling with tears as she recalls leaving the hospital for the final time.

Those early months in the hospital left much uncertainty, but Ashley and Ben refused to consider the “what ifs?” With the love and support of family and friends, they remained positive.

The couple bought a sewing machine and made small receiving blankets for Winnie. “We would sleep with them before giving them to her so they smelled like us,” said Ashley, who was unable to hold Winnie until she almost 7 weeks old, but would put breast milk on a Q-tip to put on Winnie’s lips, just one of the many ways she cared for her.

Ben and Ashley watched helplessly as Winnie nearly died several times. While Ben commuted from Sandpoint on the weekends, Ashley stayed at the Ronald McDonald House near Sacred Heart so she could be near her daughter and assist in her care. “Our goal was always to be home by the next holiday,” said Ashley.

One way the couple coped with the stress of the days in the hospital was through humor.

On one occasion, while getting ready to take Winnie for an appointment with a cardiologist, they dressed Winnie up in full scrubs purchased by Ben’s mom. “I loved to dress her up all the time,” said Ashley.

When they were finally able to come home, they brought Winnie home with oxygen and a g-tube. She remained on oxygen for nearly a year.

When it was time for Ashley to return to work, they enlisted the help of a home healthcare nurse, Cathy Horton. It was an instant bond that formed between “Nana Cathy” and Winnie.

“I was very moved by Ashley and Ben’s experience as first-time parents, mourning the death of one twin and dealing with the medical issues of the second,” said Horton, who to this day continues to visit with Winnie and take her on special outings.

Ashley and Ben were blessed with the support they received from Ben’s mother, who traveled from California, and Ashley’s parents, who traveled from their home in Wyoming, to offer their support during the time Winnie spent in the hospital and after she came home.

Today, as she approaches her third birthday in July, Winnie, who is named after her great grandmother, is a thriving young toddler. She is cognitively bright, speaking in full sentences, counting and reciting her colors. And although she remains small, weighing only 20 pounds, she is active and happy.

As Ashley and Ben rejoice in their role as parents, they are also grateful to everyone who supported them on their journey over the last three years. Ashley keeps in contact with women she met during her stay at the Ronald McDonald House, and she made many friends from Sacred Heart as well. “One of her nurses comes to visit us when she is in Sandpoint and even comes for Winnie’s birthday,” said Ashley.

In fact, Ashley became friends with many throughout the Sacred Heart Hospital.

“The man who was at the parking attendant booth knew we were finally going home and gave me a cupcake on my way out,” said Ashley of their final day there.

Looking back, Ashley said it is important that parents in their situation remember to take care of themselves. “You don’t really get a chance to grieve when you’re working to keep a child alive for a year,” said Ashley.

And while they grieve at the loss of their daughter Paisley, Ashley and Ben are able to celebrate the miracle of their daughter, Winnie, and share her with those who love her dearly and will continue on life’s journey with her.

COMPASSION AND COMMUNITY HEIDI SMITH SAGLE ELEMENTARY

HEIDI SMITH IS A BLESSING to those at Sagle Elementary where she teaches two halfday kindergarten sessions. As an elementary teacher, she teaches a variety of subjects including language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, writing, social games and character building.

Smith began her teaching career 29 years ago in North Dakota before moving to Idaho in 1999.

She began in the Lake Pend Oreille School District as a substitute teacher and later was hired at Sagle Elementary School as a teacher in the Title 1 Program followed by a stint in the second and third grade combination class before landing in her current position in the kindergarten class.

Smith said she enjoys the fact that, through the years, the golden and magical moments still come through play, using one’s imagination and the sharing of traditional songs and stories.

“I find joy in seeing the young learners still enjoying the traditional songs, games, stories and dramatic play of the past,” said Smith.

But while much has stayed the same, there have been many changes over her nearly three decades in teaching.

“I have had to be an agent of change with technology or teaching tools through the years,” said Smith. “My experience includes teaching with the vinyl albums, cassettes, CDs, filmstrips and going digital for learning resources. Even playing my jumbo CD (vinyl record) is still enchanting for the kinders today.”

One of the most profound memories of her career came in North Dakota when the decadesold school she taught in experienced broken pipes, and the school had to be condemned due to the water damage.

“The event was not catastrophic like a town flood, but the upper grades took it quite hard when they had to leave their home school and join other schools. We all had to adapt to the new schools and call it home. This experience reinforced that a school is like a family and a network of relationships,” said Smith. “The teachers all held hands together when the day came to ring the bell for the last time. Even when the building had to be torn down, our friendships still ring true to this day.”

While Smith’s career has spanned nearly 30 years and hundreds of students, there is one thing that has remained constant—her ability to maintain a sense of humor no matter what the situation. It is a lesson she hopes she has communicated to her students as well.

“A class is like a community, and the clever humor in a day may develop into a shared language like our own ‘private joke,’” said Smith. “These funny moments can sure make a difficult learning task attainable, reduce stress, and laughing together certainly makes for a wonderful day in kindergarten.”

As a kindergarten teacher, Smith enjoys helping her students build social skills and learn to problem solve through play, listening to stories and music. “These skills are predictors of students’ learning paths,” she said, recalling one student who collaborated with classmates to put

SUMMER KICKOFF IT’S ALMOST MID-MAY, AND FOR SANDPOINT RESIDENTS THAT MEANS it’s time for the unofficial kickoff to summer! Dust off those penny loafers and saddle shoes and prepare to enjoy a very special Sandpoint tradition. It’s a time of year we all look forward to, no matter what our age; a time to turn back the clocks to a simpler time.

Lost in the ‘50s is celebrating its 32nd year, and it promises to be better than ever. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Sandpoint resident Carolyn Gleason and her countless volunteers, it continues to be a favorite of many near and far.

Lost in the ‘50s will take place during the traditional third weekend in May. Dubbed Sandpoint’s biggest party of the year, it is a time to turn back the hands of time and revel in what was a simpler time. And when it came to music, it was a time that will go down in history. The music in the early 1950s was very similar to that of the 1940s. But then “it” happened—Elvis came on the scene. He, along with entertainers such as Chuck Berry,

Sandpoint’s celebration has been a favorite of many over the past three decades. With everything from vintage cars to musical entertainment, young and old don their poodle skirts and penny loafers to enjoy the celebrations. Music fills the streets, and the mood is festive.

This year’s festivities will begin Thursday, May 18, at the Bonner County Fairgrounds with Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven. A sellout nearly every year, this event is the official kickoff to Lost in the ‘50s weekend. Performing this year are Ryan Pelton as Elvis, Stin Ray Anthony as Richie Valens and Lance Lipinsky as Jerry Lee Lewis. There will also be a new band called The Lovers that promises to be a great time.

Friday, the streets of Downtown Sandpoint will fill up as the parade, which begins at the Sandpoint High School parking lot, delights any age. Even if you are not a car enthusiast, you cannot help but be drawn to the roar of the engines and the colorful cars that cruise the streets.

After the parade, you can either attend the street dance downtown or head up to the Bonner County Fairgrounds to dance the night away.

At the fairgrounds, you will be entertained by Shirley Alston Reeves, the original lead singer of The Shirelles, singing songs that will take you back in time. Also appearing will be Tommy Mara and the Crests, and Sandpoint’s favorite— Rocky and the Rollers.

Saturday offers a chance to stroll through downtown and view all the classic cars that line the streets. It is an opportunity to visit with the owners and see the cars up close as music from another era adds to the festive atmosphere.

If you find yourself wanting a classic of your own, the Sandpoint High School football team will be wearing their jerseys and strolling the streets of downtown offering raffle tickets for a $5 donation with a chance to win a 1966 Ford Mustang “C” series car.

This is the team’s annual fundraiser, and they are grateful to the Lost in the ‘50s crew for partnering with them.

“The drawing will be May 21 at Second Avenue

Pizza,” said Head Coach George Yarno, who is in his second year at Sandpoint High School. “The winner does not need to be present to win.”

Saturday evening offers another opportunity to dance and be entertained at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. In what promises to be an incredible show, The Righteous Brothers will bring their classics such as “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’” and “Unchained Melody” as they entertain the crowd. Get your tickets early so you don’t miss out!

Of course, Lost in the ‘50s weekend would not be the same without the traditional Aspirin Rally-Run. On Sunday morning at 10am, this 5k fun run and car rally begins at Second Avenue Pizza in Sandpoint. Co-sponsored by the Cardio Junkies, this event features prizes, trophies, food and drink; another weekend favorite.

“My freshman year, I ran a 3-mile race for Sandpoint High School cross-country team in 19.51 minutes,” said Teagan, who was honored as one of the team’s top 400-meter runners and also received an academic award at the end-of-season banquet.

One aspect of running that Teagan enjoys is being part of a team. “It’s a great feeling to be part of the SHS track and field,” said Teagan.

“I can do better every time, and being cheered on gives me adrenaline and encouragement to obtain a personal record.”

Currently a junior, Teagan plans to attend college and pursue a career as a Fish and Game warden and study forestry. As for

track, he plans to continue that at the collegiate level as well.

One of his coaches, Angie Brass, praised Teagan. “He is a tough, hard-working athlete,” said Brass. “He has a quiet strength and is a determined, team-centered athlete.”

Teagan shares that running is a very challenging sport, both physically and mentally. “You have to tell yourself every day that you can do it, and don’t give up,” he said. “Do your absolute best. Take advantage of recovery days, allowing your muscles to recover from harder workouts.

This is philosophy for life—push yourself to succeed.”

To “do it right every time” is one of the lessons that his coaches have instilled in him.

“We don’t do it the easy way; we do it the right way. This applies to whatever you do,” said Teagan.

KATHERINE KAUL: A JUNIOR AT Sandpoint High School, Katherine Kaul has been on the varsity crosscountry team for three seasons—a sport she said is her favorite—and also participates in basketball and track.

Katherine was named the 2016 District 1 Cross-Country Runner of the Year and is a three-time state medalist for cross country.

But it’s not just in athletics where Katherine succeeds. She has an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and said she enjoys all the opportunities for AP and honors courses at SHS. Looking ahead, Katherine plans to major in biology with a focus on research. “I am interested in medical research and genetics because both of these areas have plenty of opportunities for further scientific discovery,” she said.

Katherine has had to overcome the challenge of injuries during her years as a runner. As a freshman, she suffered a stress fracture in her foot and also had a pelvic avulsion fracture during the first track meet her freshman year.

“During my sophomore track season, my hip started bothering me again. Thankfully I did not break it this time, but I was still unable to run at the end of the season,” said Katherine.

The injuries taught her patience and gave her a greater appreciation for each opportunity she has to run.

Katherine shared that she has learned that, in order to achieve her goals, she has to work hard every day and stay focused on the task at hand even through challenging times.

“This will serve me well throughout the rest of my life,” she said

A TRADITION FOR BICYCLING ENTHUSIASTS from across North America for the past nine years, the CHAFE 150 just keeps getting better.

What started as a 150-mile benefit ride, this increasingly popular event, which draws riders from all over the country, has rapidly grown as organizers do what they can to accommodate various levels of endurance. Shortly after its inception, the CHAFE 150 added an 80-mile half CHAFE, and a few years ago the 30-mile Fun Ride was added in the hope of bringing more participants to the event.

“Over the years, we have had riders from most states in the U.S. and Canada,” said Mel Dick, one of the organizers of the event. “And approximately 50 to 60 percent of our riders are repeat riders.”

In the beginning, Panhandle Alliance for Education organized and sponsored the event.

Approximately five years ago, the Sandpoint Rotary Club stepped in to take it over and has done much to help it grow and continue to succeed, much to the delight of Lake Pend Oreille School District, the beneficiary of the proceeds.

“Since the Sandpoint Rotary took over supporting the ride four

years ago, we have donated over $160,000 to LPOSD,” said Dick.

This year’s ride will be no different.

The funds raised support and benefit the students of Lake Pend Oreille School District who are on the autism spectrum.

“During the last several years, the funds have helped support social and emotional growth programs for students on the autism spectrum and will continue to do so,” explained Dick. “One of the benefits of the programs that CHAFE 150 has helped fund is that the programs have served as a foundation for the school district’s social and emotional

growth programs for all students.

These programs are particularly important in helping all students deal with the challenges of everyday life ranging from cyberbullying to unrelated school issues.”

Joy Jansen, PhD, is the director of special education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District and has seen firsthand the profound impact the funds from CHAFE 150 have made on students.

She shared one story where she recently observed a speech and language therapy session that involved a student with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

“During the session, the student was working with the element of empathy. My heart began to sing as his answers related to all the work he had been doing around perspective taking—a fundamental element of the social thinking skills—and relationship with his peers. In addition, when asked what is a strategy he has that helps when he becomes frustrated or overwhelmed, he shared, ‘Stop, name your feeling and calm down,’ which is a second-step strategy.

He was even animated as he did the hand to represent stop. The entire time he had a huge smile on his face,” said Jansen.

through the Selle Valley,” said Dick. “This route is great for families and those wishing to enjoy a beautiful ride and shorter route.”

The event has grown in numbers throughout the years, and thus far has 86 sponsors. The platinum-level sponsor is Bonner General Health, and there are 15 gold-level sponsors including Living Local 360, KPND, North Idaho Flood and Fire, Trinity at City Beach, Timberline Helicopters, Kochava, Summit Insurance, LoneTree Creative, Parker Subaru, D.A. In 2016, there were approximately 340 registered riders. As of mid-April, the committee has approximately 130 registered, a number slightly ahead of the same time last year.

The feedback from those who have taken part in the CHAFE 150 has been extremely positive.

Comments reflecting the incredible scenery, the support offered— including the rest stops—and the cause behind the event have all enticed riders to return year after year.

Now in its 10th year, the CHAFE 150 has become one of the great annual events for the community of Sandpoint. With more than 100 volunteers and more than 80 sponsors, the ride benefits not only the Lake Pend Oreille School District, but also the local economy.

HEALTH CARE CAN BE A complicated road to travel, especially in today’s world. To whom do you turn when you need assistance managing a medical issue or if you just need a routine exam? For more than two decades, Cynthia Dalsing, MSN, NP has assisted women with their health-care needs. Three years ago, she added Nurse Practitioner Tabitha Barron to her team at Women’s Health Care, and their practice has continued to thrive and grow.

As nurse practitioners, Dalsing and Barron provide a high level of care, including diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests, performing in-office procedures and prescribing medications. It is a fact of which many are unaware.

Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing with additional education at a master’s or doctorate level. They have more than six years of education to prepare them to practice in a variety of medical settings, and in Idaho, nurse practitioners can practice independently of a physician.

“We are part of the solution for the health-care crisis in our country,” explained Dalsing. “There are over 1,000 nurse practitioners in the state of Idaho, and this progressive state law recognizes us as primary care providers.”

Unfortunately, there is still work to be done to increase the care that nurse practitioners are permitted to provide. Dalsing recently attended a legislative conference in Washington D.C., where some of these barriers to optimal care were addressed.

“There are three barriers to a nurse practitioner’s ability to practice which affect quality, costs and timely access to care,” explained Dalsing. “These are the inability to refer a patient to home health, refer to hospice and order diabetic shoes.”

At the federal level, a bill is being introduced into the Senate to permit nurse practitioners to refer patients for home health care.

“In addition, there is a resolution in the House which will include nurse practitioners in the matrix that insurance companies use to measure health-care outcomes,” said Dalsing. “Health care is moving away from a fee-for-service payment structure to reimbursing health-care providers for outcome measures. In other words,

the better care you give and the healthier your patients are, the better the state of Idaho will be graded on its health care. That also means Idaho would be able to receive more money for health care.”

Furthermore, a nurse practitioner is paid 85 percent of what a physician is paid for performing the same service. “This means that when a nurse practitioner owns and operates a medical clinic, she has the same expenses, costs and wages that any medical clinic would have, but is doing this with 15-percent less income,” explained Dalsing.

PAIN CAN BE DEBILITATING, both physically and emotionally, for so many patients, yet so many don’t realize the options that are available.

Many people live with chronic pain because none of the treatments they’ve tried have been effective, while others, on the other end of the spectrum, become dependent on opioid medications, with their lives revolving around the next dose. While there is a role for opioid therapy, these are best suited for short-term pain relief. Surgery can also play a role, but certainly not all patients are good surgical candidates. So what other options are there.

In treating pain, the most important question to answer is, “What is the source of the pain?” Understanding the answer to this question will help guide your treatment options. Certainly, if there is a clear mechanical problem that is amenable to surgery, this is an option, but many times, there is no clear cause we can point our finger at and say with certainty that “this is the cause.” This is where injection therapy can play a very important role. Often, it is difficult to figure out where the pain is coming from because many conditions can present themselves with similar symptoms.

ACHILLES TENDON INJURY COMMON AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT METHODS

BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY THE ACHILLES TENDON is a tendon that attaches the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the calcaneus, or heel bone. Every time you take a step, the Achilles is stressed as you use your calves to push off the toes.

In running, the stress is particularly great, especially for runners who take off and land with the forefoot. Luckily, the Achilles is the strongest and largest tendon in the human body and has a unique design that is made to handle significant amounts of strain and stresses put upon it. Part of its unique design is that the two tendons of the soleus and gastrocnemius twist upon themselves before insertion onto the calcaneal bone. This twist allows for higher amounts of stretch, essentially making the tendon like a spring, which can generate tremendous strength with push off and bounce back to take a tremendous amount of load in a landing.

Achilles tendinopathy, sometimes referred to as Achilles tendinitis, may feel like a burning pain, ache or stiffness in the back of the leg, usually with mild to moderate pain aggravated by activity. It is most commonly caused by an inflammation of the bursa, which lies between the calcaneus bone and the tendon.

It can be very common among athletes who put constant repetitive strain on the tendon, especially with exercises that require athletes to perform actions that cause speeding up, slowing down or pivoting in quick motions.

Sports most prone to Achilles tendinopathy include running, gymnastics, dance, football, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, volleyball and other similar high-impact activities.

There are many factors that can make a person more prone to acquiring Achilles tendon injury including sex (more common in men than in women), aging, physical problems such as flat feet or obesity, over training or improper form, medical conditions and medications.

So how is Achilles tendinopathy treated? Once the injury has occurred, it can be difficult and frustrating to heal. Luckily, the treatment is very simple and effective. There are many

different treatments available, and like most injuries, the best cure is always prevention.

Listed below are the most common and effective treatment methods: RICE: At the first onset of pain, rest, ice compression and elevation are key. The best way to cure the condition is prevention. Rest and ice the injury for a couple of days to allow the inflammation to subside before resuming activity.

Stretch: Stretch both the gastrocnemius and soleus every day to maintain flexibility. To stretch the soleus, do a calf stretch with the knee bent. It is important to warm up and cool down with activity to keep muscles loose, and stretch muscles after they have been appropriately warmed up.

Change Exercise: At onset of pain, take a break from high-impact activity and consider lowimpact alternatives, such as swimming, while the tendon heals. Also consider changing your running style. Smaller, faster strides have been shown to put much less strain on the back, hips, knees and Achilles tendon.

Calf Strength: Exercises to strengthen the calf muscle can help the injury from occurring.

Recommendations for injury rehabilitation include eccentric exercises for gastrocnemius and soleus muscle. Eccentrics are a type of exercise in which the muscle contracts as it lengthens, mimicking the strength required for impact. To eccentrically contract the calf muscle, from tip-toe position, slowly lower the body back down onto the heels.

Kinesio Tape: Certain applications of Kinesio tape to the back of the heel can help support the calf muscle and reduce inflammation to speed up the healing process.

Recovery time varies greatly depending on the severity of the injury, but it is generally recommended to slowly reintroduce activity as soon as the tendon is no longer sore to the touch.

STROKE AWARENESS RISK FACTORS, PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND RECOVERY

MANY OF US KNOW the warning signs of a stroke and understand the importance of seeking treatment immediately if we experience any of the signs: Face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty; this means it’s time to seek emergency medical treatment.

Unfortunately, many stroke patients wait until they are past the timeframe to receive treatment that could reverse or lessen many of the effects of the stroke. Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable, but awareness is key. There are four key points of stroke awareness: risk factors, prevention, treatment and recovery.

Controllable Risk Factors: • High Blood Pressure. This is the leading cause of stroke and the most significant controllable risk factor.

• Diabetes. If you have diabetes (Type 1 or 2), keep your blood sugar controlled.

• Obesity and Excess Body Weight. These are linked with an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

• High Cholesterol • Sickle Cell Disease • Carotid Artery Disease

Prevention: Know your numbers! It is important to know your blood pressure, weight and cholesterol to know if you are at risk of a stroke. Some steps to prevent a stroke are: • Increase your physical activity.

• If you use tobacco, take the steps to quit.

• Improve your diet.

Treatment: Strokes occur when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked (occlusive stroke) or ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). The effects of the stroke can be catastrophic and permanent depending on the amount of brain tissue depleted of vital circulation, length of time and the location inside the brain itself.

A clot-dissolving drug called tPA can significantly reduce or reverse the effects of an occlusive stroke. In order to be eligible for tPA, a patient needs a brief, thorough review by a physician to rule out contraindications and other symptoms that could mimic a stroke.

An immediate CT scan of the brain is required to rule out a bleed (hemorrhagic stroke), which is an absolute contraindication for tPA administration. Emergency treatment must be sought right away since time equals tissue loss, and the medication must be given within three to four-and-a-half hours after symptoms start. The sooner tPA is given, the greater the possibility of a better outcome after a stroke.

FEATURE story FOR THE AMERICAN ECONOMY to thrive, so must its ports. Each day in communities large and small along the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf coasts, millions of tons of goods are being imported and exported, ready to be sent across the country and across the globe. For companies that do business internationally, ports are the lifeblood that keeps them going. Ports allow travelers to hop from place to place on a myriad of cruise lines and allow our military to strategically place its vessels in defense of our nation. The industry provides well-paying jobs and often is the major employer in seaside communities.

The port most of us living in the West are likely most familiar with is the Port of Seattle.

With more than 1,500 acres of waterfront, the commerce that happens here is incredible. One of the most diverse ports in the U.S., it includes massive amounts of docking and container storage but also parks, waterfront shopping and dining, cruise-passenger pickup and drop off as well as ferry transportation. While a stroll through this port before a Mariners or Seahawks game shouldn’t be missed, there are also several other port cities in the area where you can experience a wide range of activities without traveling far. Fill up the tank, grab a few snacks and drinks, and get ready to hop from port to port.

Perhaps the next most well-known port in the Northwest is just south of Seattle—The Port of Tacoma. In a 2014 study done by Martin Associations, the company found that the Port of Tacoma directly and indirectly supports 29,000 jobs in the area, generates $3 billion in economic activities, and contributes $223 million in state and local taxes annually.

These are just a few of the incredible bits of information you will learn by taking an upclose bus or boat tour offered several times each year.

Bus tours are offered February through August this year. Tours are free, but you must register in advance as space is extremely limited. You should plan on spending around 75 minutes shuttling around the port with various stops along the way at points of interest. Children 6 and older are welcome to join in, and anyone 17 or older will need to bring along identification as well.

The Port of Tacoma also offers up a special once-a-year tour during the Tacoma Maritime Fest which will take place July 16 and 17. Last year, about 1,200 people took part in these narrated tours that take you onto the boats and explain the port’s history, developments, businesses and customers. It’s a rare opportunity to board these incredible vessels that transport an astonishing amount of goods through the port. At the festival, you can also gain free admission to the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum, help paint the community mural and enjoy live music.

Now that you’ve seen the massive ports in the Puget Sound, it’s time to slow the pace and explore the quaint communities that fall under the name ‘port’ along the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas. Take Highway 16 out of Tacoma and through Gig Harbor, Burley and Fernwood until you reach the Highway 166 exit toward Port Orchard. Despite being just a ferry ride from Seattle or Bremerton, Port Orchard has remained a relatively small community since its founding in the late 1890s. With less than 14,000 full-time residents, you’ll find a wide array of unique local shops and artists galleries to explore in an easily walkable downtown.

The Port Orchard Public Market features daily, seasonal and permanent vendors and is a favorite for both visitors and locals alike. Stretch your legs along the Bay Street Pedestrian Path with great views of the Olympic Mountains and another important port, Naval Base Kitsap, the thirdlargest Naval base in the country, which is directly across Sinclair Inlet from Port Orchard. Local craft beer can be found at Slaughter County Brewing Company, and an array of restaurants dot the waterfront. All summer long you’ll find Saturday morning farmers markets, first Friday art walks, and free live music in the park on Thursday evenings.

Your port road trip continues roughly 30 miles north on Highway 3 until you reach the community of Port Gamble. Here you are surrounded by history as the town grew up around the one-time oldest continually operating mill in the country until its closure in 1995. Port Gamble and the Pope and Talbot Sawmill were founded in 1853, and the waterfront

location allowed the mill to ship timber from the Northwest to San Francisco. The mill might be closed, but you’ll find beautifully restored churches and business buildings that transport you back to the mill’s heyday. The Port Gamble Historic Museum is open seven days a week, May through September, and is home to historical items that date back to when the mill was just getting going. Admission is just $4 and kids younger than 6 are free. The entire town is easily walkable, and you’ll find a local coffee roaster as well as several family friendly dining options.

Despite being a quaint little town, many are surprised to learn of the Port Gamble Theater Company, now in its sixth year. The company is presenting “Little Women” during July and “Alice in Wonderland” starting in mid-September. If you are enjoying the tranquility of this small community, consider spending a night or two in the Port Gamble Guest Houses which can accommodate eight and 10 guests.

As you leave Port Gamble you will also be leaving the Kitsap Peninsula across the floating Hood Canal Bridge and entering the Olympic Peninsula. Shortly after crossing, you will encounter the Olympic Peninsula Gateway Visitor’s Center. This is a great pit stop to pick up information for future trips around the Peninsula or exploring Olympic National Park. When leaving the visitor’s center, head north on Highway 19 to the small town of Port Ludlow. While Port Gamble transports you back in time, Port Ludlow takes you into the modern era with high-end residences, restaurants and a championship golf course. The population of this waterfront community continues to increase as planned neighborhoods continue to be built up, and there are many obvious reasons many of the wealthier families in the area are moving here. The Port Ludlow Inn is popular with honeymooners and those looking to enjoy top-notch accommodation in a boutique setting. The inn offers 37 rooms, an award-winning restaurant and stay-and-play golf packages.

The nearby Marina has 300 slips that can accommodate vessels up to 200feet long. A quick peek and you’ll likely see some very impressive boats.

but there are also paddle-boarding opportunities in the bay and 26 miles of walking and biking trails that line the water and surrounding forest.

Port Townsend is next on the list, and if you haven’t been you are in for a treat. The Victorian-era homes and commercial buildings are evident from your arrival. The town has worked hard to keep these buildings preserved, which has in turn drawn many artists and creative types to the area.

When they say it seems like something is always going on here, they mean it. There are 17 large celebrations planned for this summer alone; everything from the Port Townsend Film Festival, Wooden Boat Show, Acoustic Music Festival and the always-popular and one-of-a-kind Brass Screw Confederacy and Steampunk Hootenanny. Many choose to spend a long weekend here as there is so much to see, experience and explore. Just 2 miles from downtown is Fort Worden State Park. A turn-of-the-century Army base is now acres of public park to explore. The Marine Science Center lets kids touch sea creatures and learn about what’s offshore.

You can launch your boat, play tennis, have a picnic and even take in a show at the theatre. One of the really unique tours is being able to step inside old artillery bunkers through a guided tour of the Artillery Hill trail. Once back in town, almost every evening is filled with live music, performing arts or visual arts on display. Local farmers provide fresh produce to many of the excellent restaurants which have garnered attention from national media outlets. As with our other port destinations, there is plenty to explore along the waterfront with great beaches and walkways.

The final stop on this particular Port Tour is Port Angeles.

Many who don’t wish to camp inside Olympic National Park will utilize Port Angeles as their home base for day trips.

Biking has become especially popular here with 60 miles of path along the Olympic Discovery Trail. Many will park the car for a couple days and split up the trail by staying at one of the several bed-and-breakfast options along the route. Kayakers also love it here, as there is fast-moving whitewater nearby as well as flat water lakes and open-water sea kayaking. Fishermen can enjoy the variety of species available from salt-water species and shellfish to casting a fly for trout or exploring mountain lakes for game fish. If you don’t have a boat of your own, consider hopping aboard the MV Coho Ferry which transports guests from Port Angeles to Victoria, Canada. The 90-minute ride offers spectacular views as you cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With multiple departures from each side daily, you can choose to spend a day, a night or a weekend across the border as the ferry drops you right in Downtown Victoria. There are whale-watching charters, or if you really want an incredible view, rides can be arranged by hot-air balloon.

While it might sound like you are traveling forever on this route, remarkably it’s only about 125 miles from Tacoma to Port Angeles. The Port cities are just a few of the incredible communities and unique places to explore in one of the

Port Gamble most spectacular stretches in the Northwest. Ports are what created so many of these beautiful communities. Many got their start with just a few hundred brave residents transporting steel or timber to much bigger places. While today many of the ports cater more toward yachts and other pleasure craft, remnants of another time can be found in so many waterside communities along the peninsulas. While some communities maintain an historical resemblance to their early days, others are transforming into more modern time. What they all have in common is a close-knit relationship to the waters that surround them.

The summer road trip gets a bad rap, but for individuals, couples and families it really can’t be beat. Gas is cheaper than four plane tickets, and you can explore what you would like on your own schedule. Plan out your entire trip or just hop behind the wheel and stop when something looks interesting; there’s no wrong way to do it. With so many fun places to explore within a hundred-mile stretch, you’ll be spending far less time behind the wheel and far more time in the moment.

Washington Brewers Festival Redmond, Washington June 16 - 18 WashingtonBeer.com As the appreciation of craft beer continues to soar, there seem to be more brew fests happening throughout the year in every community; however, the Washington Brewers Festival might just be the largest beer event of the year. Put on by the Washington State Beer Commission, this festival attracts more than 100 Washington breweries serving up more than 500 different craft creations. Both Saturday and Sunday, the event is fun for the entire family and includes a lineup of food trucks and live music, as well as a Kid’s Playground and Root Beer Garden. For those wanting a little exercise beforehand, there will be a 5k run. Guests looking for something other than beer can sample local wines and hard ciders as well. Since the 1950s, this annual celebration of air and sea is an unofficial holiday for the greater Seattle community.

T

he mile-high city is the gateway to some of the most famous mountains in the country. In the wintertime, there are almost as many ski and snowboard bags coming through the airport as actual luggage. People arrive and often immediately head west toward Snowmass Village, Aspen, Breckenridge and Telluride. In the summer, locals head north of town to nearby Boulder and Fort Collins as a starting point for biking, fly fishing and hiking. The beauty of Estes Park, the famous Stanley Hotel and Rocky Mountain National Park draws visitors from around the world. With all to do north and west of Denver, the south often gets overlooked, but savvy outdoor enthusiasts know of a very special place not far off the beaten path.

Colorado Springs is perhaps best known as the home of the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, but just outside of downtown you’ll find one of the more unique natural areas in the West in the Garden of the Gods. Garden of the Gods is a registered National Natural Landmark that encompasses some 1,300 acres right in the backyard of Colorado Springs. The natural area is famous for towering sandstone formations with Pikes Peak as the backdrop. There are endless activities to do here, and unbelievably, admission is completely free.

Visitor & Nature Center Before venturing off into the park, make the time to stop in at the visitor center for some background information on what you are about to experience. Here you will find exhibits on local geology, flora and fauna, what animals you might discover in the park and a history of native people who inhabited the lands. There is also a dinosaur on display that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. There are interactive maps and fliers to help you plan your trip.

Traveling within the Park There are many ways to get around once you’re inside the park, and it all depends on what you are most comfortable with and how much time you have. You can drive yourself to many of the park’s highlights or choose one of several guided options. One fun way to experience the park is by a bus tour. This is no ordinary tour bus, as each bus was built in 1909 and is more like a trolley with open-air seating for 14, offering great views along the way. These tours last 45 minutes and are $17 per person. Booking a Jeep tour will get you into places others can’t, and tours range from 75 to 90 minutes and start at $30 per person. You can even see the park through a guided Segway tour which features several

climbers can arrange with local companies who can help determine skill level and where the best locations will be. There are designated routes set up all over the park, and luckily, if someone is already tackling the face you were interested in, there are dozens of other faces and formations to scale. While climbing is free, all climbers do need to register for a permit, which can be done at the visitors’ center or online before you go.

If you happen to be in town or visiting a park on a Thursday, you can do the weekly 5k run with the locals. Park volunteers have carved out five different 5k routes, and you can choose whichever course you would like.

Runners go anytime between 4 and 6pm, and like most everything else in the park, it’s free to participate. Those looking for additional history on how the area’s unique formations and landscape came about can see a new movie in the Geo-Trekker Theater. The film takes you back more than one billion years, showing what the area looked like and some of the dinosaurs and other creatures that inhabited it.

HOW EXOTIC: COUSCOUS A TRADITIONAL NORTH AFRICAN DISH of semolina, couscous is traditionally steamed and topped with meat or vegetable stew. The national dish of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, couscous spread from its origins to Libya, Mauritania, Egypt and sub-Saharan countries.

Couscous is also consumed in the Middle East. In more recent years, couscous has developed worldwide popularity. With many people choosing a vegetarian lifestyle and a diet rich in healthy foods, combined with the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and Maghrebian immigrants’ culinary influence of in the Western World, couscous has become a staple in cultures across the world, including America.

In the U.S., couscous is widely available and can commonly be found in specialty grocers or in the ethnic or health-food section of larger grocery stores. Comparable to rice, pasta or bread, couscous is an inexpensive yet nutrient-dense product made from wheat, or other bases such as barley, sorghum, corn, millet or minor grains.

The most popular varieties of mint worldwide are apple mint, spearmint and peppermint. Easy to grow— best in wet environments and moist soil—with a fragrant smell, mint is almost an exclusively perennial herb. Rich in vitamins A, C and B2, it complements both sweet and savory dishes. Put It Together • Salad: Cut all vegetables uniformly and approximately the same size and toss together with couscous.

• Dressing: Place garlic and herbs in food processor and chop. Add vinegar and lemon juice and process. Slowly add olive oil in a slow stream until it incorporates.

Add Tabasco, salt and pepper.

Incorporate dressing into the salad.

Refrigerate and let chill before serving.

• To add more excitement to your salad, top with Feta cheese crumbles and/ or diced cooked chicken (making it a perfect entrée salad). Tomatoes and zucchini also complement this dish well.

Bottle Bay Restaurant It’s a popular destination for those out on the water looking for a place to dock the boat and enjoy a cocktail and a bite to eat. With room to dock up to 65 boats and just a 10-minute boat ride from Sandpoint’s City Beach, Bottle Bay Restaurant will begin to welcome visitors on Memorial Day weekend.

Floating Restaurant The Floating Restaurant in Hope opened for its 28th season on April 14.

With a completely remodeled dining room, there is seating both inside and out, both of which offer breathtaking views. SANDPOINT BRANCH EXPANDING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY

OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, technology has grown exponentially. We get much of our news online and download our favorite novels to our electronic devices. So where does that put our local libraries? For those in Sandpoint, it means the library continues to be the center of it all thanks to an upcoming expansion and remodel.

The project, named Your Library Transformation, is the manifestation of the many ways a public library now serves the community. No longer merely a book-lending service, the library is the hub of learning and community engagement.

“The truth is, the library has been transforming for years. The building just needs to catch up,” said Marcy Timblin, public relations specialist for the East Bonner County Library District.

Originally built in 2000, the library in Sandpoint will feature a 10,000-square-foot expansion and remodel that will include a larger children’s area, young adult book section, large print collection and community meeting venue. Also in the plan is to add a new technology center, teen lounge, makerspace and reading room. The new space will also accommodate the need for designated quiet zones and social areas, as well as a fire-suppression system, increased parking and landscaped green areas.

The teen lounge is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sandpoint and is something that those involved with the library feel is an important addition.

“Right now, we don’t have much to offer teens in the way of space inside the library. When they come here after school, the main place they have to congregate is in the lobby. We are really looking forward to creating space, materials and programs for young people based on what they have indicated to us that they would value most,” said Ann Nichols, library director.

Contracts for the project will be awarded in late March or early April with groundbreaking to start this spring, as determined by the contractor.

The Library District has opted to fund the project through grants, corporate partnerships and voluntary contributions rather than a public bond. According to Timblin, more than $50,000 has been awarded through grants alone in the last six months.
