PUBLISHER’S Crazy in Print Have you ever been told that you were crazy? Or that you will never make it? Maybe that your idea wasn’t that good? I can answer yes to these. When I decided to launch a media company with the idea of focusing primarily on print, I was told I was crazy. When we picked Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to be our first communities, we were told that we wouldn’t make it with the current competition. When we said that we will not only utilize print but also social media and web to push our clients’ brands, some said it wasn’t a good idea! Over the years I have learned a lot. Mainly, listen to your gut, be willing to learn new things, and be prepared to work harder than anyone else. I have been blessed with finding like-minded individuals that also believe in the same things and together we have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. Examples of this can be demonstrated by the launch of our sixth publication, Edmonds Living Local, and the growth of our current magazines in each community we are in. What started as an idea, and a single 24 page Sandpoint, Idaho community magazine has, in just four years, grown into six monthly community magazines serving Sandpoint, ID, (where we have two publications), Coeur d’Alene, ID, Bonner’s Ferry, ID, Gig Harbor, WA, and Edmonds, WA.

Call us soon about our Valentine Getaway Packages! We also have: • • • • •

Another example of this can be seen in how each community has embraced us, not only our products, but us as people. It is because of the care these communities have for their friends and neighbors that we have been able to find and share an amazing amount of stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. Our local staff ’s commitment to each community is evidenced by our continued involvement in local non-profits, events, sports teams, chambers, networking groups, and more. Recently our Gig Harbor Marketing Specialist, Julie Reed, was honored as the Gig Harbor Chamber’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ for her work in the community and business development. We are a globally connected society that can often forget what’s right around corner from our own homes. It’s easy to take for granted the little things that make our community great. You will see an updated look to Living Local Magazine in 2015, but our mission will always be the same; to highlight the unique local flair of each community and what makes these such special places to live. We will continue to seek story ideas from our readers and your feedback is always welcome; this is your magazine after all! We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

For both visitors and residents of Sandpoint, the replica of the Statue of Liberty located on the shores of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille is a treasured landmark. We chose this photo, by Angela Dail of Little Orange House Photography, for our cover as it reflects the symbol of not only freedom, but of new beginnings for those who immigrated to our country. May the New Year bring renewed hope and a grateful heart for the freedom we are afforded in our homeland.

Bridges Home A love story set to music. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Christopher Demlow and Marie Dominique Verdier.

Music. For many, hearing one song can open a floodgate of memories, taking us back in time in an instant. And for others, music is the center of their lives. That is the case for Sandpoint residents, Dave and Tami Gunter, for whom music has been an integral part of their life journey together from the beginning.

With Tami being a classically trained soprano, and Dave performing in bands and combos professionally since the age of 13, their music styles differed greatly. “We found that our voices were a natural fit, despite our different musical backgrounds. It took some time to find common ground artistically, but the journey was worth it,” said Tami.

“Music was the catalyst for our love story,” said Tami. “We met through musical theatre and began singing together on a semi-regular basis in various groups, including the Singers Dozen and the Swing Shift Vocal Quartet, which was a featured group with the Swing Street Big Band for about eight to nine years.”

While Tami and Dave are both vocalists, they also play a variety of musical instruments. Attend one of their performances and you will be treated to everything from guitar and tenor ukulele to banjo, accordion, octave mandolin, slide guitar, Celtic harp and even the washboard. “Our style ranges between Americana and Celtic, with stops in the Blues, Cajun and Bluegrass music along the way,” describes the couple, who originally performed music originated by other artists, but now perform their own original music.

Since then the husband and wife have been a fixture in Sandpoint, performing in various local venues and sharing their talent to the delight of many. Performing as the popular duo Bridges Home for the past six years, Dave and Tami’s individual experience in music began long before they met. They both performed in high school and college choral music. Tami went on to be a featured artist in the Burning Hills Singers at the Medora Musical in North Dakota, and Dave performed in numerous bands over the years. Together, they have a long list of musical theatre experience.

14

Tami shares that when Dave was younger he used to write much of his own music but had not done so for many years. “He began songwriting again about two years ago. It has been a huge success,”said Tami. “Over time, audiences began asking us to focus on these (original) songs, which was a thrill for us as artists.”

LIVINGLOCAL

They recently completed their third CD, titled Deep Roots, which includes 14 songs, 13 of which are original compositions. “The 14th song is our own arrangement of a traditional Irish song,” describes Tami, adding that she and Dave are planning on a CD release concert in mid-January. The duo’s focus on composing and performing original music has helped open the door to several new opportunities when it comes to festival shows and theater concerts. In fact, last summer Bridges Home played approximately 40 concerts in these types of venues in Idaho, Montana, and Washington. Their unique flair and popularity has earned Bridges Home a number one ranking for the Local Americana group on Facebook/ ReverbNation, a website that connects over two million musicians and bands worldwide. “We moved up from number 1400 nationally to number 400 based upon online plays of our songs from our new CD,” said Tami. While both Dave and Tami enjoy writing and performing their music, they both are kept busy with their jobs in the Sandpoint community. They are familiar faces in both Farmin-Stidwell

“Music was the catalyst for our love story.” and Kootenai elementary schools where they team-teach general music. They both also offer private music lessons in their studios. Dave is a freelance writer and together they have taught a Creative Arts in the Classroom course at the college level. Although they lead extremely busy lives pursuing their shared passion, both Dave and Tami find time to share their talent on a volunteer basis with everyone in the community from the youth to the seniors. They have conducted artist-in-residence workshops and enjoy performing for children and at assisted living and memory care locations throughout the community.

Watching them perform, their love of music and one another is evident. “There is an element of sharing that takes place between performer and audience that is like no other experience I’ve had. Whether in front of a large festival crowd or an intimate small theater audience, it’s magic to be part of that interaction,” said Dave.

Rural Outreach Specialist in Coeur d’ Alene Wednesdays & Thursdays 1-800-894-2450

As for Tami, she said that while her whole life is based on music, there is nothing that brings her more joy than singing and performing live. “Being on stage is pure joy for me,” she said.

New Year, New You HOW TO MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS LAST.

BY DEBORAH OLIVE.

When the clock struck midnight on December 31st, we welcomed a new year, expecting that a year from now our lives will be different. We’ll write our book, achieve relationship success, increase our business’s revenue, or lose extra pounds. New Year’s resolutions are the launch pad for change. While some succeed in resolutions, others fail. We find successful people generally do three things. First, define what success means to you. Your idea of success is as unique as your thumbprint. Be clear by defining WHAT you want and WHY you want it. Achieving your new level of success may seem fairly easy, or it may feel like climbing a mountain. Having summited Mt. Rainier several years ago, I find it a fitting allegory. Three of my women friends and I tossed around the idea of achieving something significant together. We chose a climb of Mt. Ranier. One of the women in our group had previously participated in a fundraising climb for lung cancer, in honor of her father – and was unsuccessful. She wanted to try again – for her Dad. We had our WHY. The goal was clear, to stand on top of Mt. Rainier, so finding an image was easy. Whatever your idea of success, create a clear image.

LIVINGLOCAL

Secondly, find a mentor or coach who has achieved what you want to achieve. If you want to learn a new sport, craft or skill, you naturally seek out someone who’s “been there.” To successfully summit Mt. Rainier, we worked with a mountain man with over 20 years experience being a guide. We followed his advice regarding gear, learned to navigate with a map and compass, and trained under his direction. Lastly, take action. Remember WHY you want this particular success and let it fuel your actions. A powerful question is, “What one step can I take now, with what I have, to move my goal forward?” Then, take it – even if the action is small. Ultimately, our entire team of twelve summited Mt. Rainier. We were in action months before our climb - and it started with small steps. What are the small steps you can take now that will prepare you for bigger steps later?

A Fresh Start

Admit it. This is how your life feels sometimes, doesn’t it? Whether it’s a closet, a junk drawer, the garage, or simply your calendar, sometimes it takes all your energy just to keep it together. And after the Christmas rush, this feeling can grow exponentially. But it’s not just the holidays that can have us feeling overwhelmed; many experience this feeling 12 months out of the year.

WITH THE NEW YEAR, THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO GET A LIFE MAKEOVER.

After all, our busy lives today have so many competing obligations. Whether you’re experiencing chaotic mornings with kids late for school, spilled coffee on your new suit, or last-minute stops at a sporting goods store to replace yet another lost football mouth guard, life can seem unorganized.

BY SARAH FRIESEN.

Or maybe you are taking care of aging parents, selling your home, or simply working two different jobs to raise money for your teen’s college fund. The challenges of everyday life can be daunting.

Kids on Board

Every day, time is lost searching for missing items such as cell phones, bank statements, or keys. A cluttered desk loves to play hide and seek with you, hiding the papers you do need and revealing in plain sight everything else that is nonessential in that moment.

Encourage your kids to help by sorting old toys and donating items they no longer use.

January is full of opportunities for starting fresh and choosing a new outlook. Hire a life coach, join the gym, go back to college, or start a new job. Wherever the year takes you, consider hiring a professional who has “been there and done that” to take care of your house. Now is the time to do your own mini life makeover, and I have compiled a list of my suggestions to make it fun and easy: • Send thank-you cards for gifts received. • Purge holiday decorations, and re-pack items in labeled, tidy containers for next year. Donate whatever you didn’t use for the last two years. • As you put away each gift, find something else to give away. • Encourage kids to sort old toys and donate items they no longer use. • Throw out expired medicines. • Complete a home maintenance list of all items needing repair, replacement

Bold and Beautiful 2015 BRINGS BRIGHT AND BOLD COLORS AND PATTERNS. BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, SELKIRK GLASS & CABINETS.

Ask about our beautiful alternatives to granite!

The holidays are over and it’s time to jump into the New Year with renewed hope, lofty goals, and anticipation that this will be our best year yet. Along with that, the projects we’ve been putting off until after the busy season are now staring us straight in the face. What are your to-do list items for 2015? Will you play it safe and go neutral, or will you be looking for current color trend ideas. Either way, I can give you an idea of what the industry is predicting for this coming year. History repeats itself, and as such, color trends tend to repeat themselves. Orange, espresso, and bold greens are making a comeback in interior finish color trends. I believe “Retro” would be the appropriate term. Chevron patterns are everywhere in wallpapers, fabrics, carpets, and even tile. Even interior doors are getting more retro too, boasting unique panels with long windows and custom leaded glass options. It seems that the trends for 2015 are leading us toward the upbeat, bright and bold colors combined with unique bolder patterns. Could this be an indication that our economy is happier, leading us away from the gray trends seen in the last few years?! I do think gray will still be a strong color for years to come, but will be used via metals, countertops, and other surfaces to provide contrast and heaviness against the bolder patterns and colors.

Custom laminate countertops with state of the art Gem-Loc edge for looks & durability. Installation of high quality undermount sinks.

This current demand seems to be large windows, accents of exposed metal support beams, bold patterns in furniture, and most definitely a clean, uncluttered look. To achieve these, we in the design industry have to provide good storage space to hide clutter, ways to minimally cover those large windows for light

control and to keep those bold patterns from fading, provide a variation of hardware finish options, and meet the request for the cabinetry to tie it all together. We are seeing more of a demand for cabinets with slab door and drawer fronts with simple, clean lines. Ornate moldings are not as popular. Cabinets are tending to be taller, going all the way to the ceiling. Vanities are becoming more furniture-like and some are wall-mounted, completely open underneath. Unique door hinging systems are in demand with tip-up style openings. Countertops can go a couple of ways; they are either solid colors, heavily influenced with quartz manufacturers or have combinations of recycled glass with you guessed it - blues, greens, oranges, and even muted gray undertones. Glass countertops are also becoming more affordable. At the kitchen and bath market this fall, glass countertops drew a lot of attention, so we brought some to our showroom. The glass comes in many color options and patterns, both bold and muted. They really do provide a fun showpiece or when dimly backlit with LED strip lighting (most have a dimmer option), a pretty classy night light. Regardless of the color trends you like, I predict that moving forward, you will have your option, no matter how bold!

KEEPING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS COULD SAVE YOU MONEY.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

New Year’s resolutions. Most of us make them; many of us break them. Typical resolutions include exercising more, losing weight, and spending less. We do our best to keep these self-made promises, but statistics show that most revert to our old ways within a few months.

locks on windows and upgrading roof shingles for fire safety could all help reduce your rates.

But what if keeping these resolutions could also result in not just improved physical and emotional health but also in increased savings on your insurance premiums?

It is always a good practice to request a copy of your credit report and review it for errors. Steps you may take to improve your credit include paying your bills when due and maintaining a credit balance of less than 30 percent of your credit limit.

When making your New Year’s resolutions this year, think about how they can affect your wallet. It may help keep you motivated. Achieving a healthy weight - A healthy weight will not only help you look and feel better, it can also affect your life insurance rates. If you are applying for a life insurance policy, rates will be based on many factors, one of which is your weight. A healthy weight will possibly result in lower insurance rates. There are occasions where you can even apply for lower rates on an existing life insurance policy if you have lost weight through diet and exercise. Not all policies will allow for this so be sure and consult with your agent. Quit smoking - Like losing weight, losing your smoking habit will make a significant impact on both life insurance rates and longterm care insurance rates.

Improve your credit - In many states, insurance companies will perform a credit check to determine if you are eligible for lower car and homeowner’s insurance rates.

While not all states consider one’s credit when setting insurance rates, it is a good practice to review your own credit annually and take steps to improve your rating. Avoid temptation - We have all heard the horror stories of texting and driving. By avoiding the temptation of using a cell phone, we reduce the risk of inattentive driving which can result in accidents and traffic tickets. And while many people may believe that hands-free devices are the safer option, experts agree that it is the mere act of talking and driving that is the distraction. Make it your New Year’s resolution to meet with your agent and see how you can reduce your insurance rates!

Make it your New Year's resolution to perform a review of your coverages! You may even save some money!

such as thickening of the ear pinna or a subtle head tilt may occur. When seeing any of the above, a veterinary visit becomes a critical step: only the scope knows for sure! The ophthalmoscope tells the real story of the ear canal and the eardrum. Treatment goals exist to take care of the immediate problem and to determine any possible underlying causes. EAR INFECTIONS ARE A COMMON AILMENT FOR OUR FURRY FRIENDS.

BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL, SANDPOINT, ID.

One of the most common reasons for a pet visit, besides the very important yearly examination, involves the ears of our furry friends. In both dogs and cats, ear infections often go undetected by owners but can be a major source of discomfort, pain, and underlying disease. In cats, ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are often the culprit and create quite an itchy, infected and sometimes painful situation. Although dogs are susceptible to mites, their infections usually result from yeast or bacterial organisms and are almost always secondary to abrasions, moisture, and allergies. Some breeds have poor ear designs and are not set up for good auditory health. Consider the Standard Poodle with its hairy, narrow, and long ear canals, or the Basset Hound with its long and heavy pinnae (flaps). Golden and Labrador Retrievers don’t really help the situation with their “swimming” habits. Sometimes just bathing any furry breed can spark an ear infection! Allergies create underlying problems with the skin that affect ears tremendously and may be a source of recurring issues. Obvious signs of an ear infection include red skin on one or both sides of the ear, black or cream colored discharge, and very unpleasant “dirty sock” smell (oolala!). The pet will often flap, shake, or paw at its problem ear(s) in a way that indicates discomfort. Sometimes, however, less detectable signs

intense pain by dampening inflammation of the pinnae and canals. This often involves topical and/or oral medication. The second step is to kill the offending organism whether it is mite, bacteria, or yeast. Medications work best when the ear is clean; debris, wax and crusts interfere with most topical medicine. It is not uncommon for a veterinarian to suggest an intensive flushing, suction and cleaning. Anti-pain and anxiety injections are often essential to get the job done because sometimes the ears can be full of cement-like wax and exudate from the infection. Rarely do ear infections strike only once, but if they do consider yourself lucky. Allergies tend to be responsible for over 80% of these painful conditions in dogs. Should this be the case, pet owners may need to consult with a doctor to formulate a long-term plan of management. This is never a quick fix but can be controlled with

a combination of medications and lifestyle changes – perhaps including specialty foods. The Google era in which most humans live allows pet owners to become knowledgeable and effective when it comes to basic pet care. However, over-the-counter cleaners and mite killers are not only ineffective, some can actually make the ear more inflamed! Consulting the family veterinary doctor is usually less painful, more efficient, and most effective for suspected ear problems.

A Sandpoint Tradition AFTER 25 YEARS, NANCY MEYER RETIRES.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

She may not know you by name, but chances are Nancy Meyer knows you by number. For 25 years the owner of Meyer’s SporTees has been outfitting athletes in Sandpoint and beyond, including Bonners Ferry, Noxon, Priest River and Clark Fork. Whether it is youth soccer or adult baseball, Nancy Meyer has been the person to help teams look their best. It was with mixed emotions that Nancy recently announced that she is retiring to enjoy winters in a warmer climate and taking time to visit her family in her native state of Michigan. “I’m really going to miss all the people,” said Nancy of her departure from Meyer’s SporTees. “But obviously the time was right because it sold so quickly.”

LIVINGLOCAL

On December 26th, Nancy sold her business to Peter and Jackie Gillis of Sandpoint who will merge their current business, Earle’s Embroidery, with that of Meyer’s SporTees. “It’s going to be a nice transition because it is the same industry,” said Nancy. Peter added that he and Jackie look forward to carrying on the tradition of Meyer’s SporTees. “We intend to continue to offer the same products and services that Nancy has offered in the past,” explained Peter. “One difference will be on-site embroidery and screen printing.” The new store, Sand Creek Custom Wear, will be located at 404 Cedar Street in downtown Sandpoint and will open on January 5th. Over the years, Nancy has earned

a reputation for not only providing excellent service, but also for her support of the Sandpoint community. She donated to many worthy causes over the years, including Celebrate Life, which was started by her daughter-in-law Jenny Meyer who passed away from cancer. She also helped Karen Williams fulfill her late husband’s wish of providing baseball uniforms for underprivileged children in Nicaragua. Also recipients of Nancy’s generosity were the many fundraisers put on by schools and other non-profit organizations such as Ducks Unlimited. For those who have come to know Nancy and her husband Doug over the years, it is not a surprise that they have been so successful. But there were some who were not so sure in those early years. Nancy and Doug came to Sandpoint, along with their two young children, and opened a sewing and vacuum business similar to that which they had in Michigan. After a year they relocated the business into the Bonner Mall. It was there they realized the demand for custom shirts. “People would come in and ask for souvenirs,” said Nancy. “But there wasn’t anything around.” She began making custom sweatshirts and selling them in the corner of her store. They became so popular that she and Doug decided to expand their operation and rent a separate part of the mall exclusively for Nancy’s custom shirts.

work, and we will pay them the rent,” recalled Nancy. The Mall management was so unsure of her success that they refused to offer her and Doug a lease. Instead, they leased her a spot on a month-to-month basis. And that lasted five years. “Never tell us never,” said Nancy of her and Doug’s determination. Recalling the years she spent operating Meyer’s SporTees, Nancy said she loved meeting so many families in the community. “I’ve put a lot of kids’ names on a lot of garments,” said Nancy. “You know a lot of the kids by what you’ve done for them.” She has especially enjoyed it when kids return years later and tell her they still have that special custom shirt she made for them. The store will continue to have those special touches, one of which are the custom made purses crafted by Nancy’s granddaughter, Grace Meyer.

As Nancy begins the transition to retirement, she assures the community that Peter and his staff, which includes many of her employees such as Kayla Ireland-Francis, Karen Alsager and Roxy Ireland, will help make the transition smooth. As for those customers who have supported her throughout the years, she is humbled and grateful for all they have done to help her be successful. “They’re not just customers. They’re friends,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of fun.”

READY TO BE PAMPERED? A journey to wellness. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Judy Clark. If there is one thing Genee’ Jo Baker knows about, it is pampering! Since opening Su Gee’ Skin Care nine years ago, she has treated a multitude of women and men to European facials, corrective facial treatments, preventative care treatments, spa pedicures, natural nail care and more. But her exposure to her profession began long before that. “I am a second generation Esthetician so the knowledge of this field since I was a child has been a big advantage,” explained Genee’. “The name ‘Su Gee’ (sue Jhay) is a combination of my mother’s first name and mine. It’s a way of honoring her for everything she taught me about this beautiful healing industry.” At Su Gee’ Skin Care, one can also indulge in organic airbrush tanning, full body waxing, and eyebrow waxing. “Something new is always around the corner,” said Genee’. Her quest to provide her clients with the best possible result is what drives Genee’ to hand select all of the skin care and body care products she uses. They are tested to insure her guests receive the results they desire. Always seeking to improve the experience for her clients, Genee’ recently renovated the pedicure area, moving it to a private room. “We now use a zero gravity chair for the guest,” said

Genee’. “It’s hard not to fall asleep wrapped in luxury and being taken well care of.”

to be outdoors through every season, enjoying paradise!”

While the State of Idaho does not require Estheticians to engage in continuing education, Genee’ said her philosophy is that it is vital to stay current on what is available for her clients and what changes are being made in the industry. “Holistic wellness and skin care go hand in hand. Much healing can occur during the treatments we offer,” said Genee’.

Genee’ said she attributes her success to her clients, or her guests as she prefers to call them. “I dote on them as I would a guest in my home. I have a loyal following and get especially excited when someone new needs help,” said Genee’.

After moving here in 2003 with her late husband, Genee’ said it did not take long to understand that the change in the weather demands a different approach to skin care. Genee’ is currently embarking on advanced education to treat those suffering from the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. “It’s a must that I help those who are trying to heal. Unfortunately, the standard protocol for cancer plays havoc on the skin. I focus on their healing and giving them relief through a customized treatment as well as calming the spirit and giving them some down time to breath easy.”

She is grateful to live in such a wonderful community and said it is one reason she loves giving back by providing discounts to veterans and donating to places such as Panhandle Animal Shelter, Bonner Community Food Bank and the Homeless Task Force. “This community has taught me that we need each other. It takes a village and we are always willing to help. There is magic in this town.” At Su Gee’ you can always find a special that reflects the changing seasons. If you haven’t visited Su Gee’, call them today and they will offer you 20% off whatever service you like. This offer is good through February.

When not helping others on their journey to wellness, Genee’ loves being outdoors. Whether it’s gardening, biking, kayaking, hiking with her dogs, snowshoeing or tribal belly dancing, Genee’ stays active. “Living here inspires me

IN FOCUS A NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE

SANDPOINT’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND GOALS. BY MAYOR CARRIE LOGAN. Happy New Year from the City of Sandpoint! Here is a recap the City’s accomplishments of 2014 and goals for 2015. The City of Sandpoint’s budget for 20142015 is $32 million dollars. Approximately $6 million will be spent on salaries and benefits, $9 million on maintenance and operations, and $12 million on capital projects. Our revenues of approximately $32 million come from beginning cash, property taxes and other income in the form of state payments, enterprise funds (water, sewer, garbage and street lights), fees, debt service funds, trust and agency funds and special revenue funds. Following is just a glimpse into our many accomplishments and goals: • Completion of the Water Treatment and Transmission Project. Five years and $20 million later, Sandpoint has a new membrane filtration water treatment plant capable of treating ten million gallons per day, a new transmission main beneath Sand Creek, and a new transmission main serving Ponderay. • Continued implementation of Downtown Streets Plan with completion of three blocks of 3rd and 4th Avenues. • Trenchless rehabilitation of 1.25 miles of clay tile sewer using cured in place pipe. • Awarded a contract for the Selkirk Loop Interpretive Center that is under construction. • Overlay and widening of Baldy. • The City secured grants in support of infrastructure installation along Industrial Way. • Prepared and facilitated an emergency response plan for the Coldwater Creek bankruptcy. • Assisted in the restructuring of the Business Improvement District. • Completed the final land use regulation amendments of the 2009 Comprehensive Plan. • Amended the Sandpoint Sign Code for buildings facing the By-way. • The City now offers utility bill E-statement, and payment by credit card or debit card. • Current rebranding of the City of Sandpoint and developing a new website. • We partnered with Bonner County road department this year on use of equipment and crews. We are also partnering with Bonner County Fairgrounds to provide a new home for the equipment from the Bonner Business Center. • Local development includes the construction on the Bonner General Health facility, Belwoods/Pend d’Oreille Winery, the Amtrak Depot, and the Heartwood/Catholic Church and Hive redevelopment. • The City is concerned for an inevitable accident involving oil. We are aggressively seeking funding for additional emergency response supplies, equipment and training. We are working with Bonner, Kootenai and Boundary Counties on an updated and complete geographic response plan, equipment grants and training opportunities. We have completed a citywide evacuation plan and will continue to communicate with the NTSB and state and federal legislators regarding tanker safety, mitigation and pre-disaster safety. • We are finalizing efforts to make 5th Ave. between Pine and Cedar a two-way operation to return downtown streets to local control.

Speaking with Svein Nostdahl, owner of Sandpoint Sports, and his co-worker Brian Corless, I learned a lot about the business of biking and skiing. This company has been in business in the Sandpoint/Ponderay area for the past 16 years and is in its fourth location at 476930 Highway 95 near the Starbucks in Ponderay.

can tell the customer ‘why’ the part goes with their bike or on their skis. Plus we have better products,” he said.

Having such a great location on the highway brings in many regular customers that have been acquired over the years due to their awesome “Right gear, right fit, NO Exceptions!” motto and the high quality of merchandise and service they offer at the store. In addition to their local clientele, Sandpoint Sports is also the go to place for many Canadian consumers who travel here in need of bike and ski repair or gear.

I briefly explained that I, like many skiers, purchased my ski gear second hand. I shared that I use that gear still today. To this, they smiled and responded, “Most people are wearing boots that are two sizes too big for them.”

“We also get a lot of business from smaller towns in Montana that don’t have a specialty bike and ski shop in their towns,” said Nostdahl. Within a few minutes of speaking with these pleasant gentlemen, I understood that they are all about the science and knowledge of a product, not just a sales pitch. Svein explained that the bigger stores that sell rack after rack of bikes or skis do just that - sell. “Many of these stores can sell a part, but we

You can tell in a few moments of speaking with either Svein or Brian that the ‘why’ is an integral component in getting either the correct part or having the right skis or boots.

Svein went on to say that, “...just because a boot ‘feels’ tight doesn’t mean it is the right boot for your foot.” Sandpoint Sports takes time with each client because they want you to be happy for as long as you use the gear. Therefore, they take the time before you buy to make sure that the gear you are after is the right gear for you. They take the time to measure your foot for boots, and if it is skis you are after the science applies to how tall you are, how much you weigh and what type of skier you are.

bindings, poles or those special gloves or goggles you want, they can get it in for you. Bike accessories come in quickly from a special order, generally within one day. Not only does the store sell all this high quality gear, but they also give you the service after the sale. Even if you haven’t bought your gear from the guys at Sandpoint Sports, you can bring in your bike or ski gear for a tune up, repair or even get a replacement. They are having great discounts for the holidays on skis and kid’s bikes. The average bike, according to Svein, is around $300 but that also comes with a two-year service agreement. We all know how important service after the sale is, and Sandpoint Sports guarantees this is one of their highest commitments to their customers.

Sandpoint Sports also has all the accessories that you need for either biking or skiing, and whatever they don’t have in stock can be ordered in quickly. Whether it is specialized skis, boots,

SHS junior Davan Norris has played basketball, baseball and football since he was in seventh grade. He loves the competition. With another year ahead of him in high school, Davan said his goal is to compete athletically at the collegiate level. As far as a career path goes, he would like to study business. “My dad owns a company called Norcon. I would love to take over the family business when my dad retires,” said Davan. Davan said that being told he was not big enough to play defense in football was initially challenging. But it was not a deterrent. “I was really motivated by the people who told me I couldn’t be a defensive player,” said Davan, who was named first team all IEL at safety.

you would do when no one was around to see. There were always two options; the one you chose would define you as a person.” Favorite food: “I love chicken alfredo, especially my mom’s.” Favorite teacher: “Mrs. Imaz. She tries to change things up and make every day different and exciting.” Riley Couch “Leading through encouragement is far more impactful than leading through harsh criticism.” That is the lesson that SHS junior Riley Couch has learned through her participation in sports. As a soccer and basketball player, Riley enjoys year round activity. As a testament to her dedication to being a team player, Riley was voted Most Inspirational for the varsity soccer team this year.

Being a typical teenager has helped Riley decide on a career path. “I am interested in Orthodontics. After a few years in braces, and (seeing) the results, I think that would be a career worth pursuing.” Riley tore her LCL the spring before high school. It was a major challenge she fought to overcome. “I had to rely on my relationship with God, my family, my coaches and my teammates. With their help I was able to regain what I had lost and more.”

Riley is also successful in the classroom, achieving honor roll status each semester since seventh grade. Ask her what is most important to her, and she does not hesitate. “Family is the most important thing in my life,” said Riley.

Winter Fun MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR FUN ON THE SLOPES!

BY COLIN ANDERSON. It was a tough start to the 2014/2015 ski season, but now that the snow is falling there is plenty of fun to be had at our regional mountains. Remember, a bad powder day on the mountain is better than no day on the Mountain or a day in the office. Here are a couple of events to keep you entertained when it’s time to unbind and unwind. January 9th – Jackass Day at Silver Mountain. Silver celebrates its 46th birthday by offering retro priced day passes of just $12. Cake is served at 2pm and live music carries long into the night.

You can demo the latest boards and skis and also learn to cross country ski at the Nordic center. Nordic trails are free for the weekend, and rental rates are reduced as well. January 18th – Lookout Pass Winter Carnival. This family friendly event is a hit each year with Lookout regulars. There’s plenty for kids to see and do along with food and drink specials in the bar. Don’t miss the Northwest National Wife carrying contest!

January 10th-11th – Wintersportsfest at 49 Degrees North. Guests are introduced to all the winter activities the mountain has to offer.

January 17th – Northern Lights at Schweitzer Mountain. The night skies light up each year at this popular event. Skiers and riders can participate in a torchlight parade down the slopes followed by an impressive fireworks display. Live music and a party follow in the Schweitzer Village.

Schweitzer’s Average Annual Snowfall: 300 inches.

January 25th – Lookout Pass Bavarian Brews & Brats Festival. Grilled brats, local beers and traditional Bavarian music, what more could you ask for on a Saturday? It’s also media appreciation day so you might just catch a glimpse of your favorite local TV personality giving it their best shot on the slopes. Pray for Powder!

COVER STORY A NORTH IDAHO GEM Proposed lake level changes spurs community response. By Jani Gonzalez.

Several changes involving the water levels at Lake Pend Oreille came to a tilt last summer, including a proposal to decrease post Labor Day lake levels for the survival of bull trout. Manipulating lake levels became a heated issue, and many advocates remain concerned over having lower lake levels. The issue has led members of the community to voice their interests in protecting the lake’s recreational use, economy, ecology and wildlife. Lake Management Lake Pend Oreille’s water levels have been regulated by Albeni Falls Dam since its construction in the 1950s. The dam is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the power generated is marketed by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). According to Robyn MacKay, Manager of Operations Planning at BPA, the issue at Pend Oreille is three-fold. Advocates for Lake Pend Oreille, such as Idaho’s Lakes Commission, want to maintain higher lake levels in the spring and fall. In the spring, having a higher lake level depends on the Corps’ flood risk assessment, she said. The Army Corps of Engineers aims to be in the summer operating pool of 2062-2062.5 ft. by the end of June or early July, Kristian Mickelson, a hydraulic engineer for the Army Corps, said. Having a higher level earlier increases the chance of flooding.

“If a storm hits that produces large inflows, it could cause flooding downstream, and upstream of Albeni Falls Dam, it could cause loss of life and property damage,” Mickelson said. The second issue is the possibility of having higher lake levels through September. BPA and the Corps are working with the Lakes Commission to possibly extend the lake’s “full pool” level of 2062 ft. further into the month of September. Since 1996, the lake’s winter level has been maintained at either 2055 ft. or 2051 ft., depending on a decision tree developed by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission to test which elevation is more advantageous for kokanee spawning. The lake’s water elevation was held at the level where the fish were spawning. Some years, the lake would be held at 2055 ft., while others it would drop to 2051 feet.

Erosion Concerns

Bull Trout Survival

Over the years, lake level fluctuations have increased shoreline erosion particularly in the Clark Fork River Delta. When the BPA flexible winter operations were proposed, the Idaho Conservation League (ICL) was concerned over how inclusive the BPA’s Environmental Impact Statement was. Although the BPA performed an environmental assessment, the ICL felt that it was not sufficient and sued the BPA to perform a more in-depth analysis. The case was heard before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in October, and the ICL is awaiting the court’s decision.

The Albeni Falls Dam’s design prevents the bull trout from escaping the warmer lake temperatures. The dam has endangered the fish’s survival because it has no fish passage solution, Deane Osterman, the Executive Director of Natural Resources for the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, said. The fish haven’t been harvested for decades, and his small staff manually relocates the fish. “Right now, the Kalispel Tribe of Indians is the fish passage solution for Albeni Falls Dam,” Osterman said. “Every single bull trout we have tagged with an electric or acoustic tag that comes through the dam and that we release below the dam has died because of the thermal stress. That river system is increasingly a warm one.”

A meeting this month with a gubernatorial representative, Northwest Power and Conservation Council, the Army Corps, BPA and the Lakes Commission is the next step to negotiating the management of the lake.

This year, the Idaho Fish and Game removed that request because they determined there was no correlation between having a higher lake level and the fish’s ability to spawn, John Barco, a Policy Analyst for the BPA said. This means the lake can return to its original winter elevation and the BPA can implement flexible winter operations, where it can alter lake levels based on energy needs. The operations concern advocates for the lake. This year the Corps will maintain the same level for winter because of the BPA-funded Clark Fork River Delta Restoration project.

44

“The delta is eroding at the alarming rate of about 15 acres a year. The flexible winter operations … wasn’t given the level of scrutiny we thought necessary to determine whether or not it would exacerbate the erosion problem,” said Susan Drumheller, North Idaho Associate for the ICL.

LIVINGLOCAL

“In the past, the fish have adapted to that warm water by moving back downstream out of their native tributaries and moving up through Pend Oreille [River] and into the lake. That’s a live fish stream that we want to restore so that Kalispel people can have access to that trusted resource,” he said. The Kalispel Tribe had an agreement with the Army Corps to modify the dam’s lake operations after Labor Day of 2014 so the fish could reach cooler temperatures. Many people feared this could mean an earlier drop in lake levels in the summer season. That agreement has since been altered, and the Kalispel Tribe is

currently investigating alternative solutions for fish passage. Fear of Recreational and Tourism Decline According to Ford Elsaesser, chairman of Idaho’s Lakes Commission, Lake Pend Oreille reaches its full pool level by July. Stakeholders in the Lakes Commission want to see that level remain higher longer for a full recreational season. An elevated lake level would help sustain and grow the lake’s tourism economy. “We’d like to see a full pool for the month of September before [BPA] starts any drawdowns so that the lake is in full use for the month, which is one of our best months weather-wise,” he said. The Lakes Commission also would like to have winter lake levels higher than the 2051 ft. mark. The BPA shouldn’t automatically lower the lake level to 2051 ft., he said, without having a specific need. A meeting this month with a gubernatorial representative, Northwest Power and Conservation Council, the Army Corps, BPA and the Lakes Commission is the next step to negotiating the management of the lake.

ABOVE The unfortunate consequences of extreme lake fluctuations include docks that freeze to the bottom and are damaged when water rises again.

The Lake Pend Oreille Alliance formed in 2014 specifically to address drawdowns to Lake Pend Oreille. “Many of our 500 plus members are concerned about the impact to recreation, wildlife, property, scenic beauty and our local economy,” said board member Ralph Sletager. “The law says that normal pool of 2062.5 feet should be maintained for about six months. In recent history, it’s only at those levels for a couple of months.” The group is asking that Albeni Falls Dam be operated more in line with its original charter, keeping normal pool from Memorial Day to Oct. 1, Sletager said. “This issue is vital to all of North Idaho’s waterways including Lake Coeur d’Alene,” he said. “We have a legal and historical right to assure our water is managed for scenic beauty, recreation, navigation and commercial uses, not just for power generation that most often flows to other states.” The Lake Pend Oreille Alliance is a non-profit organization that encourages all policy that maintains mandated levels on Lake Pend Oreille for recreation, wildlife and property, and actively opposes any efforts to take additional water. The New Gorgeous DISCOVER A NEW ASPECT OF YOUR BEAUTY RIGHT HERE AT HOME.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

“Of life’s two chief prizes, beauty and truth, I found the first in a loving heart and the second in a laborer’s hand.” - Kahlil Gibran New years resolutions usually involve improving some aspect of one’s appearance, and some of these resolutions are usually based on a perception that involves lack of feeling attractive. Many of us are locked into the belief that there are unacceptable aspects of our appearance that need toning, tanning, or teasing. Some are stuck believing that until we improve what we perceive to be flaws, we will not be pretty enough. But the fact of the matter is that everyone is born beautiful and born to be beautiful. Beauty is something that is inherent within each of us and not something outside of ourselves that we must constantly pursue. Still, that does not mean we need to give up our make-up, hair color, or our daily walk or jog. A shift in perspective comes when we realize that through make-up, clothing, or exercise, we can bring out a new facet of what is our already inherent beauty. We already possess beauty- we are already beautiful- but clothing and a new hairstyle can bring out a new and fun aspect of that beauty. What better way to spend the New Year than to check out local clothing stores and hair

LIVINGLOCAL

salons? Now is the time to get to know your area with fresh eyes and to stop in and try on some clothing in that cute little boutique that you have never visited. It’s also the perfect time to think about a new hairstyle or slight modification in hair color. Visiting a local specialty salon might be just the thing to get someone else’s take on fun ways to frame your beautiful face. The new gorgeous is all about looking at yourself with fresh eyes, trying on an outfit slightly out of your comfort zone, or looking for a new and fresh hairstyle. The new gorgeous is all about recognizing your inherent beauty and then telling any inner critics to take a hike. You are on a different path this year and that path is all about realizing you are enough. So, stop into a new boutique, get a new cut and color, and get to know your neighborhood stores. Not only will you be the first to see trendy finds, you will find inspiring ways to enhance your beauty in the process and take part in the new gorgeous, which is a mindset. That mindset is centered around a heart full of love. Reaching for that ideal is the best New Year’s goal of all.

Tips to Keep You Healthy

Don’t let the fries fall where they may.

Starting an Exercise Routine? MIDDLE-AGED MUSINGS. DON’T MAKE IT TOO DIFFICULT.

BY TERESA PESCE.

This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. I heard her calling out to her fellow employees in an absolutely tortured voice, dripping with desperation, “How many calories in a Tic-Tac?” She had decided the way to va-voomness was to count calories, you see. Nothing wrong with that – in fact it’s a very concise way to lose weight. However, everything she consumed, including a stick of chewing gum, had to go on her caloriecounting list. All day. All evening. She was slumped across her desk, her head resting on a piece of paper with one long, skinny column of single digit and two-digit numbers. A pen was held limply in her hand. The single Tic-Tac was

LIVINGLOCAL

duly noted. (Two calories. I knew you’d want to know.) The next day she gave up and treated herself to a large stack of french fries – comfort food after her trial by calorie. She didn’t ask what a single french fry calorie count was and multiply that by the heap on her plate, nor did she add the ketchup count. You see, when keeping track, the exquisitely painful process includes everything that you consume except water. When you let go, you let go completely and let the chips (and fries) fall where they may.

Making something too difficult to do works perfectly if you basically don’t want to do it. It seems so noble, but it’s sabotage dressed in silk. We can do the same with exercise, of course. We can go overboard on workouts, beginning our very first session with a full halfhour of heart-pounding, sweat-drenched action (with spurts) on the treadmill, followed by three full sets of 12 reps of free weights that leave us trembling and shaky and prohibitively sore for several days. We can punish, almost torture, ourselves and then, of course, give up. I do assure you, push me too far, too fast, too long and too-inclined on a treadmill, and I will tell you anything you want to know. So let’s not do this. There is another way, and I call it the One Thing approach. One Thing Remember the movie called “City Slickers” where a crusty old cowpoke says the secret to life is one thing – and you just need to discover what that one thing is for you? I think the same thing holds true for changing your body. If you start your body renovation by stripping your diet of salt, fat, and sugar, while asserting portion control and exercising at least five times a week with both cardio and weights – possibly working in faithful attendance at yoga, or kickboxing, or Pilates (and of course down eight glasses of water daily), I can just about promise you will stumble and end up thinking you have no willpower as you come up for air from your consoling bowl of Haagen Dazs.

You know what works in my experience? Doing just one thing and experiencing the joy of results. How can you know what’s really working if you do everything at once? I was such a mess at one time that taking a walk was a big step. I dragged along, everything jiggling under my nobody-will-know oversized dress. Then I found that I wasn’t dragging, I was walking. I felt more energetic. I didn’t get out of breath. Do you know how fantastic that was? VERY! It made me want to add one more thing, like a few not-so-deep knee bends and see if my legs felt stronger. I did, and they did! Then I wanted to start jogging and found to my horror that I could only jog for SIX STEPS before my heart was thudding and my chest was heaving. That appalled me, so I determined to jog for six steps until I could jog for ten. Do you know I worked up to over a mile? I would jog until I couldn’t, then walk, over and over. Eventually I noticed I was jogging and simply didn’t feel a need to slow to a walk. With joy never before experienced, I found I could just keep going!

Don’t Give Up We can punish, almost torture, ourselves and then, of course, give up. I do assure you, push me too far, too fast, too long and too-inclined on a treadmill, and I will tell you anything you want to know.

BELOW Don’t give in to that consoling bowl of Haagen Dazs! Take it slow and you’ll see success!

Would you like to feel successful and strong and empowered to progress? Try doing just One Thing. See if you like the way you feel about yourself! Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.

Movement Melts Away Stress As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you’ll experience less stress in every part of your life. RIGHT Not only does exercise improve your body, it helps your mental function.

Micro-current Therapy HEALING AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL.

BY CHRISTINA RUST HEFLEY, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY. With the recent advancements in stem cell therapy, an old treatment modality is being rediscovered. Micro-current technology, referred to as MENS (Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation), is an electrical stimulation pain therapy that provides extremely small pulsating currents of electricity in microamperes. One microampere (uA) is 1 millionth of an ampere. The MENS current cannot be felt because it is more closely tuned to the level of electrical exchanges, which take place at the body’s cellular level, below the threshold of normal sensation. Because the body’s cells, especially stem cells, are biologically sensitive to electrical current, the application of MENS results in direct cellular stimulation. Micro-current penetrates inflamed cells, restoring the essential blood supply, removing cellular waste and bringing direct pain relief. Many people might be familiar with more traditional forms of electrical current therapy, such as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation) that provide sensory level currents at one milliamp (mA), or one thousandth of an amp. The major difference is that larger amplitudes resist the body’s natural electrical currents, bypassing cells. This can be effective for interfering with pain signals and moving interstitial fluid, however it can prevent the exchange of blood, oxygen and nutrients. The human body simply adheres to the natural law “Electricity must take the path of least resistance.”

Your Goals Are Our Priority!

turn, fluids and inflammation build up; cells are deprived of proper oxygen and nutrients, which then causes poor cellular function. Micro-current therapy aides the human body in creating the ideal environment for self-healing. It helps stimulate an electrical field close to the normal cellular level to enhance circulation. This sub-sensory current normalizes the electrical charges to match those naturally produced by healthy or uninjured cells. Micro-current electrical therapy will: • • • • • •

Increase the production of ATP, the essential energy source of our bodies’ cells Increase the production of proteins necessary for tissue repair Increase the level of oxygen/ carbon dioxide exchange at the cellular level Increase the exchange of ions and the absorption of nutrients into cells Stimulate the elimination of waste products, such as lactic acid, which promote pain and inflammation Stabilize the electrical polarity of cells in the area.

Since the 1800’s, there has been research, clinical and laboratorial, on the electrical nature of the human body. Two German scientists, Sakman and Neher, won the Nobel Peace Prize for their research on the response of human cellular membranes to micro-current. Every being consists of individual cells whose nuclei possess a positive electrical charge and its surrounding membrane a negative charge. These cells, along with the body’s nervous system, function with their own direct (DC) current and energy. This current and energy is necessary for life to exist. Generally, a pain response begins when blood capillary pores dilate, flooding proteins into cellular areas. In

Add Some Zing

Did Grandma ever make you a cup of mint tea when you had a tummy ache? Have you rubbed some Vicks on your chest with that strong eucalyptus smell to clear congestion? Do you turn to lavender-scented bath products to relax at the end of a long day? If so, you’ve experienced the healing properties of plants – specifically, the essential oils from various species composed of naturally occurring chemical constituents that our bodies recognize and can use for our benefit and well-being.

THE BUZZ ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, essential oils are so-called because “they were once thought to represent the very essence of odor and flavor.”1 Not an oil like we think of canola or Pennzoil, these plant extractives are hydrophobic – when dropped on a water surface, they will float and not blend, just like those other substances. Used in developing perfumes (think: jasmine and ylang ylang), flavoring foods, and added to healing salves, essential oils contain a wealth of uses to enhance our lives.

BY AMY BARDWELL.

Research studies are now exploring what generations not too long ago knew – plants are nature’s original medicine. Modern scientists prefer to isolate the specific compounds for synthetic reproduction – like methyl salicylate in wintergreen oil for pain relief -- though enthusiasts point out

that it’s the combination of so many other trace elements that may contribute to the effectiveness of pure essential oils. On their website, NYU’s Langone Medical Center shares how essential oils are being tested clinically to aid in various conditions ranging from anxiety to Alzheimer’s dementia and reducing cigarette cravings.2 Essential oils are commonly used both aromatically and topically. Melaleuca, or “tea tree oil,” has become popular for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Applied on the reflex points of the feet, oils are quickly absorbed into the body. Frankincense is being studied for possible antitumor qualities. A drop of high-quality essential oil, such as cilantro or basil, can add a great zing to your cooking, especially if you find you’re short of the fresh herb! Always check the label before taking essential oils internally, though, as many off-the-shelf products are not recommended for internal use due to possible adulteration. A note of caution: essential oils are powerful substances and as such need to be used with wisdom and appropriate research. Just as oils may be beneficial towards

Compliments of Mother Nature

When you walk down the aisles of your local grocery store, there’s a good chance you’ll see a parent or two scrupulously reading packaging for buzzwords, like healthy, organic and natural - the list goes on. Maybe you’re one of those parents. When making food decisions for your family, you might be looking for healthy, delicious options that your children will want to eat. Notorious for being picky eaters, however, kids won’t eat something unless it looks good. So, you must add one more element to your shopping criteria: visual appeal - namely coloring. Yogurt needs to have a pretty pastel hue. Fruit juices need to have sweet shades. And each cereal flake needs to look as inviting as the box promises like more than, well, just oats. The big question: How can this happen naturally? “Natural colors are derived from all the active ingredients responsible for colors found in nature, like plants, fruits and vegetables,” says Tammi Higgins, Natural Colors Commercial Development Manager at FMC. “They’re used in food and beverages as an alternative to artificial colors made from coal tar and petroleum. Nature is able to provide bright and vivid colors in every shade of the rainbow.” Anthocyanins, derived from grapes and other fruits and vegetables, impart vivid pink to red to

LIVINGLOCAL

purple hues in a wide range of foods, including fruit chews and fruit-based beverages. And the beetroot helps intensify the color of tomato paste or achieve that familiar red in red velvet cake. Annatto is also one of those beautiful color sources found in nature. It is the seed of the tropical bush Bixa Orellana - known as the lipstick tree - which is a plant native to Central and South America. In addition to being used as a spice in traditional cooking, annatto seeds can deliver a bright yellow to orange color, a hallmark of macaroni and cheese - a perennial family favorite. Foods with natural coloring offer a cleaner label with recognizable, non-chemical ingredients. Natural colors are derived from sustainable sources and adhere to vegan, Halal and Kosher standards. They can even be certified organic. So, as you comb the grocery aisles for healthy alternatives for your family - or the occasional candy-coated chocolate treat - look for foods enhanced with colors from nature. Remember, anytime something is added to food, like a natural color to enhance its hue or salt, to preserve it, it’s considered an additive. But when that additive comes from Mother Nature, you can feel confident that you’re making a smart choice.

HOT CHIPOTLE CHICKEN DIP An addicting hearty and easy dip- perfect for football! Brought to you by Litehouse Foods. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Finished in: 35 minutes Servings: 2-8

Save 15%

It’s almost here. The time that football fans look forward to all year long. The Super Bowl! For most it’s more than just a football game; it’s a time to plan the party of the year. Because many have their eyes glued to the game, and of course those highly anticipated commercials, an array of appetizers is usually the best way to go.

Gather Ingredients • 1 cup shredded leftover rotisserie chicken • 1/4 cup OPADIPITY by Litehouse™ Chipotle Ranch • 1/4 chipotle or other salsa • 4 oz. Cream Cheese • 2 Tb. Diced green chiles • 1/4 tsp cumin • 2/3 cup Shredded Taco cheese • 2 Tb. Litehouse Instantly Fresh™ Chives • 1/8 cup milk or half and half Put it Together Combine all ingredients in crock pot and heat. Oven: heat in oven proof dish at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until bubbling. Microwave: Heat on high power for 3 minutes. Stir. Heat for an additional 2-3 minutes until hot. (microwave powers vary).

OFF OF YOUR ENTIRE PURCHASE WHEN YOU PRESENT THIS AD.*

While many of your guests are likely still recovering from the “holiday food hangover” and trying to stick to those recently made New Year’s resolutions, it is likely that they will be looking for some healthier options. But let’s face it, football and parties usually mean an abundance of food. For these reasons, you want to be sure and offer something for everyone. Dips are usually a perfect appetizer; they can go with your favorite chip or be an accompaniment to a healthier choice of fresh vegetables. Not only that, they are easy to make ahead of time so you are able to focus on more important things before your guests arrive, namely the several hour long pre game show!

*Must present this ad. Offer not valid with other in-store promotions or on shipping costs. Offer only valid at Bleu Cheese Factory & Gift Shop. Expires 1/31/15.

So whether you are a football fan or just love throwing the Super Bowl party, plan ahead and try some new recipes this year. Who knows, your friends may be so impressed they may just ask you for the recipe!

WEEKENDGETAWAY

Heaven on Earth Banff & Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. By Colin Anderson.

Just 80 miles outside of Calgary, Alberta is one of the most spectacularly beautiful recreational areas in North America. Banff National Park is shaped by cascading peaks, beautiful untouched forests, dozens of mountain streams, rivers, and lakes, a plethora of hot springs and countless areas to explore by foot, bike, skis, sled, or vehicle in any season. Consistently one of the most visited parks in Canada, Americans living in the west have also been flocking here for years to take in its beauty. The drive from North Idaho should take about six hours, or you can fly into Calgary. From there you can take a tour bus or rent a car to get to your final destination of either Banff or Lake Louise. Expect about an hour to an hour and a half drive from the airport. Accommodations vary from budget to extravagant in both beautiful cities, but if you want an exquisite stay choose one of the two Fairmont properties. The Fairmont Banff Springs is like stepping into a European castle. The 125 year old hotel is just steps from downtown Banff and also boasts a championship golf course in the summer and ski packages during winter. A little more secluded is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise which offers guest suites with incredible views of the lake and its surrounding peaks. Guests can explore the entire length of the lake on foot or by horse during the summer and horse drawn carriage in the winter. When the lake freezes, a skating rink is set up, and in traditional Canadian fashion a pickup hockey game always seems to pop up.

Back in Banff, you’ll find a vibrant and eclectic downtown filled with galleries, museums, culture, and of course plenty of food and drink. Despite being one of Canada’s most popular tourist destinations, the town’s population remains under 10,000 keeping the small town charm alive and well. The town itself is 4,600 feet in elevation, but the surrounding peaks climb to nearly 10,000 feet. Seemingly everywhere you turn you’ll find a peak or body of water. Banff plays home to a popular film festival, winter carnival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and plenty of mountain biking competitions. If you go during winter, be sure to make time for one of the three ski resorts. Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise each offer its own challenge. You can learn to ski here, but frankly it’s for the experts. Sunshine Village and Lake Louise especially offer an incredible amount of double black chutes and bowls, challenging even the most advanced skiers and riders. To get away from the crowds you can find operators who will take you by snowcat or helicopter for your own private ride down the mountain. After a long day on the hills, a soak in one of the many hot springs is the perfect way to cap your day. Any time of year you’ll find adventure here and experience a landscape rarely seen by most of the world. Spend a weekend and then plan on another; you’ll definitely want to come back.
