HAPPYNEWYEAR

www.like-media.com

www.SandpointLiving.com

With the New Year comes a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. At Living Local magazines we have had a fantastic year and are exceedingly grateful to you our readers for being a large part of our success.

If you would like to advertise with us please call 208.290.4959 or email info@like-media.com.

In early 2013 we expanded our Sandpoint Living and Coeur d’Alene Living editions to 64 pages. In the fall we expanded our Bonners Ferry Living to 24 pages. All of this growth was precipitated by the demand from our readers for more local stories about their communities. In each publication, we bring you stories about the good things that are going on in Sandpoint; the difference non-profit organizations are making in our town; the small businesses that are doing their share to stimulate the local economy; updates on our high school aged youth; and ways in which you can live a healthier more active lifestyle.

To submit articles, photos, nominations and events email us at events@like-media.com. Advertising/Sales Jessica Kimble-Smith 208.290.4959

As we look forward to 2014, Living Local is branching out with a new Living Local publication in Gig Harbor, WA. We will publish our first issue in February and already have received amazing response from that community.

jessica@like-media.com

My staff and I firmly believe that the reason Living Local magazines have been so successful is because we do what we can to connect communities, from the younger generation to the seniors, and help bring you the Good News of what is happening around you. When it comes to marketing, we are strong supporters of the small business owner and do what we can to help promote, brand and market their service or product to others. We do this not only through print media, but also through our Living Local websites, social media and more.

Director of Marketing/ Managing Editor Patty Hutchens 208.290.6553

As we move forward, we invite you our readers to provide us with story ideas and information of what you would like to see in your number one community magazine –Sandpoint Living.

Yoga = Weight Loss By Christina Hefley, D.P.T.

C

an doing yoga really help you lose weight? The answer? Absolutely YES! Put away old assumptions that only skinny, flexible people can do yoga. Anyone, of any age, shape, and size or any level of health can practice yoga - even bedridden patients or individuals confined to wheelchairs.

Yoga is more than just stretching. The primary focus of yoga is to create awareness, harmony and strength between one’s mind and body. If you are struggling with being overweight or hit a plateau in your weight loss goals, often it is because you are following a diet or exercise program that you read about or were prescribed. I’m not saying these are “bad,” I’m simply suggesting that by practicing yoga, - learning to connect your mind and your body – you will be able to tune into your body’s individual needs and physical responses to food and exercise. You and your body need to talk and listen instead of arguing or ignoring each other. How else can yoga help you lose weight? When you practice yoga, (and I say practice because yoga is not competitive), you will stretch to increase flexibility, muscle strength and tone, as well as balance. You will breath to improve circulation of blood and lymphatic flow. You will relax to improve awareness of your body and decrease stress. When you combine all these components, you will improve your metabolism. Certain poses during yoga practice are specifically designed to stimulate movement of the internal organs and increase circulation to the thyroid gland. Weight reduction is a natural response to routine, gentle yoga practice.

Hot Yoga is a relatively new trend in Hatha yoga, which has been practiced for thousands of years. There is a hot yoga studio here in Sandpoint called Zest Inspired Living. (zestinspiredliving.com) Hot yoga is simply practiced in a studio that has been heated to around 100° F. Moving and stretching in a hot, humid environment results in lots of

sweating! Not only will you lose a significant amount of water weight, heating up your core temperature increases your metabolism! Even if you only sat in the room and watched everyone else practice their yoga – you would lose weight. Yoga can also be practiced in warm water with similar results. As a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy practicing for the past 18 years, I have been to hundreds of hours of continuing education and read tons of books and journal articles on western-based medical rehabilitation. I have given birth to 4 wonderful children, current ages 19, 20, 22, and 25 years old. During those years, I struggled with my own weight issues, successfully going from 214 lbs to 138 lbs back to 155 lbs and back again, again, again…. I know the battle. Finally two years ago, I stopped battling myself and started practicing yoga. Because success is so natural, I am incorporating the principles of yoga into my physical therapy practice. In February, I will be traveling to Thailand for a 5 week advanced Hot Yoga Therapy certification course. My goal is to develop a yoga-based weight reduction program when I return in March. For more information, please contact Cornerstone Physical Therapy at 208.265.0610 or stop by our office at 1301 N. Division in Sandpoint.

“I cannot even imagine where I would be today were it not for that handful of friends who have given me a heart full of joy. Let’s face it, friends make life a lot more fun.” - Charles R. Swindoll For a group of Sandpoint women, their friendship has taken them down paths they never imagined. Through the years, it has meant many things including doing what they can to help one another bring a friend’s dream come true and creating special memories while doing so. Marsha Ogilvie had always wanted to write a children’s book. After all, as one of the founders of Kinderhaven, a group home and emergency shelter for abused and neglected kids, children have always been near and dear to her heart. “English was not my major, but I always thought it would be fun to write a book. Especially a children’s book,” said Marsha Ogilvie. So when she approached her friends Patti Clemons, Barb Merritt and Sue Brooks about helping her co-author a book, they could not say no. “Marsha already had the idea about centering the story around a family of bears who were from our area,” explains Patti Clemons. “She had already done a lot of research on bears and their behaviors, so that helped set the stage.” In fact in the book there are references to the Sandpoint area including a rickety old Sand Creek Bridge and twin girl bear cubs who are named Coco and Lalla after Cocolalla Lake. One of the characters of the book that the women especially enjoyed creating is the matriarch of the family of bears, GiGi. “Our inspiration for GiGi comes from our beloved Hazel Hall,” said Patti. Hazel was a dear friend of the women and well known in the Sandpoint area. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 96. “GiGi is a very happy, positive bear who is always happy and claps a lot when she is excited,” said Patti of the fictional

character. “That is something Hazel used to do. Everything about Hazel inspired us in creating GiGi’s character.” When they began, the first thing the women did was to gather at Patti’s home with poster boards and begin the process of laying out their story. As years went by, life got in the way and it became difficult to find the time to work on the book. “That was the most challenging part of it all,” said Barb Merritt. “Finding the time to get it finished.” Part way through the process Sue Brooks had to bow out due to time commitments. “We were sad, but we understood,” said Patti. “Sue was an integral part of writing this book, so we made sure to mention her contributions in the book.” The remaining three persevered and now, six years after they began, the book has been published. An accomplishment of which the women are all extremely proud.

Barba mons,

Patti Clemons said that the best part about writing the book was being with her best friends - Marsha, Barb and Sue. “We had so much fun. We laughed a lot, drank some wine, laughed some more,” said Patti. “We would sit around Sue’s laptop and either Sue or I would start typing. We’d read and re-read a section, then move on. I believe we must’ve “finished” the book 100 times.” Eager to have their work reviewed, they sent the book to Patti’s stepdaughter, Christi, who works for a publisher. “She helped ground us,” said Patti. “We had the story going in many different directions, and she advised that we had a series of children’s books in one book. We took her advice and focused on just a few of the adventures the bears had along their way to visit GiGi.” The 34 page book tells the story of a family of black bears that travels through an enchanted forest to see their Gramma GiGi. But their journey takes a detour when the three mischievous cubs encounter many adventures along the way. In the end they finally reunite with their Gramma GiGi only to discover that she is very magical!

Good News After giving the women some guidance on narrowing down their plot, Christi also recommended that it was time to also start their search for an illustrator. The search did not take long. The woman they decided upon was an obvious choice in their minds. She was not only local, but she was another in the women’s circle of friends and had also been involved with Kinderhaven as had all the authors. Bonnie Shields proved to be the perfect fit.

“The expressions on the bears’ faces are just priceless. We were so grateful she was willing to take on this project for us,” said Patti. “She nailed it!” These women learned a great deal in their journey to becoming published authors. But most important to all of them is that they were able to share special moments to add to their own book of memories. “I really enjoyed the process,” said Marsha Ogilvie. “I cannot wait to start the second book.” .

SPOTLIGHT

SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS By Patty Hutchens

I

magine nearly 80,000 square feet of space where you can design and furnish your entire home from top to bottom. That is precisely what you find when you enter Ponderay Design Center in Sandpoint.

With several different departments employing specialists in a particular field, customers are given the benefit of individualized knowledge for all that Ponderay Design Center offers. Included in the Design Center is Selkirk Glass and Cabinets which has everything one needs to design their kitchen and bathroom including cabinets, countertops, cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures, shower doors, mirrors, doors and windows. Selkirk Glass and Cabinets has products from entry level to custom and employs nine full time employees, including two kitchen designers and two installers, whose expertise will ensure that you find that perfect balance between a home that is functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. “Sometimes the process can be overwhelming, so we make it a point to work closely with our clients to pull together a design plan,” said Assistant Manager Karin Corey who uses a 3-D design program that helps generate the plans. “It is very helpful to our customers who can see it come off the page.” Ponderay Design Center also includes Sandpoint Furniture and Carpet One. “Sandpoint Furniture has been around for 68 years,” said Selkirk Glass & Cabinets Manager Eric Jeffres. Eric’s dad Dale, along with Dwight Sheffler and Mike Gunter, have owned the store for over 30 years. In 2007 they decided to expand

to the current 78,000 square feet. It was shortly thereafter that the economy took a downward turn. But it was the long standing reputation of Sandpoint Furniture, the superior customer service and the loyal customers that helped them through a period when many businesses were forced to close. Eric said one quality that makes Selkirk Glass & Cabinets and the entire Design Center unique is the fact that they have everything one needs to design and furnish a home. The various designers coordinate with one another to ensure a flow in design from room to room and from floor to ceiling. “People come from as far away as Seattle, Montana and Calgary to buy from us,” said Eric, who added they have even had customers from North Dakota who have found it cost effective to purchase from them and transport the products themselves. Another factor that distinguishes them is the expertise of their in house installers. “We service all products we sell,” said Eric. They have many repeat customers from the Spokane area and beyond who make it a habit of traveling to Sandpoint to see all the Design Center has to offer. “We are the only company from here to Seattle that has everything on one campus,” said Eric, who takes pride in their customer service. “Even if it’s something we cannot personally do, we find someone who can. At Ponderay Design Center we are unique. We are different. And we are definitely worth the drive!”

Busting 4 Myths About Wallpapers A Fun Home Addition for a Beautiful, Attention-Getting Look

W

allpaper can be a beautiful addition to the home, but some common misconceptions deter people from buying the product. Before purchasing wallpaper, consider the following information from the Wallcoverings Association: MYTH 1: Wallpaper is not a good choice for kitchens and baths. The truth: Kitchens are in fact ideal places to decorate with wallcoverings. They look great, and the protective coating on most wallpapers make them washable; many are even scrubbable, so maintenance is a snap. Because today’s wallpapers can mimic any surface -- tile, stone, metal -- and are designed to coordinate with cabinetry and appliances, they’re an affordable way to update a kitchen. Wallpaper is the best way to spruce up guest bathrooms where there’s no shower, and even in bathrooms with a tub or shower, most wallpapers work well. Just use the proper adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it stays put.

MYTH 2: Wallpaper is a hassle to hang and remove. The truth: Today’s high-performance, easyhang wallpaper (many known as “nonwovens”) are easy to hang and remove -- a great alternative to ordinary paint. Installation is quick and requires less patching and sanding, fewer coats and less waiting time between steps than does paint. When it’s time to redecorate, most wallpapers come off easily. MYTH 3: You get tired of wallpaper very quickly. The truth: People are often so pleased with their selection that on average they keep the same pattern up for many years (paint has about a three-year life span). And there’s a vast selection, whether you want to highlight one wall with an attention-getting wallpaper or give an entire room a beautiful look.

18   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

MYTH 4: Wallpaper is a big commitment. The Truth: If you fear commitment, selfadhesive, temporary wall décor products are great options. These peel-and-stick products can be mixed, matched and layered, and they’re repositionable and removable, therefore perfect for rentals or dorm rooms. Nor is wallpaper off-limits if you live in a rental. Many lease agreements stipulate that walls must be in move-in condition when the lease is up. Fortunately, today’s easy-hang wallpapers may protect walls from everyday scratches and gouges, so landlords will likely grant permission. No special removal tools are required; simply tug at a corner, and entire sheets are down in minutes without marring walls. Tips courtesy of the Wallcoverings Association www.wallcoverings.org.

T

he high “price tag” on groceries and gas do not have to put a damper on your plans to remodel your kitchen this year. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), just merely changing out the decorative lighting fixtures over the breakfast nook or center island can have a big visual impact, creating a fresher, more up-to-date look -- and it is considerably less expensive than replacing the cabinets or countertops. If your kitchen’s only source of lighting is from recessed cans, consider adding a few fixtures to serve as aesthetic and functional focal points in the room over the casual eating area and/or the island. To make all your lighting as efficient, effective and attractive as possible, dimmers are a musthave update. “The greatest benefit of installing dimmers in an existing kitchen is that the quality of the resulting light will inevitably appear much more comfortable and flexible than what

you had before,” explains Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. Todd Phillips of Quoizel, a leading lighting manufacturer, keeps track of the latest trends in kitchen design. “Transitional is still the operative word,” says Phillips. “What’s popular right now is what I would describe as Cleaned Up Americana. This is representative of the classic, familiar shapes and elements we all recognize, but with a bit sleeker appearance and on-trend finishes such as bronze and brushed nickel.” “Handcrafted, hand-forged designs are also gaining in popularity,” Phillips continues. “The key word is clean. Finishes are still neutral, simple and clean. Along with beige, white, bronze and brushed chrome, I’m starting to see more polished chrome. I also find the more custom designs are a bit bolder in their use of color in the kitchen and in the lighting,” he adds.

hoever coined the saying, ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ certainly has never been to Sandpoint’s Tango Café. Tucked inside the Sandpoint Center on Church Street, Tango is a place where people can enjoy freshly made meals prepared by their several talented chefs. In May 2008 local restaurateur Barney Ballard opened Tango Café, and it quickly became a gathering place for many to enjoy a breakfast that includes choices such as gourmet French toast, a breakfast burrito, eggs benedict or a bowl of fresh fruit. And the choices for lunch are just as delicious. “’Our chicken salad stuffed avocado is a crowd favorite as are our daily specials,” said Judy Colegrove who purchased Tango Café from Ballard and his wife Carol in January 2010. “We bake everything in house except for our gluten free items. We also make all our own dressings and sauces.” And if you are looking for some good comfort food, Tango Café makes all of their soups from scratch. Judy’s expertise in the restaurant business has served her well since she purchased the restaurant four years ago. She had worked at the Beach House for Barney and Carol Ballard and then served as a manager for Jorge and Melissa Oleary. She also worked at the Idaho Club with Chef Paul, the Jetty in Hope and worked at Tango Café before purchasing it. Besides the delicious food served at Tango, another attraction for many is the staff’s flexibility to cater to people with certain dietary restrictions. “Any of our menu items can be done with gluten free bread, and we have several pastries that we individually wrap

to prevent cross contamination,” said Judy. In addition to serving breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, the Tango staff is often busy on the weekend providing catering, primarily at the beautiful setting of the Tango Café and Sandpoint Center atrium, but they will also provide catering for people to pick up at the restaurant and they can also deliver it to the event for the customer.

Tues-Sat Open at 4pm 105 South First Ave. Aperitivo Style Menu Beer • Wine • Liquor Interactive, Fun, Casual & Social!

While Tango offers a great variety of homemade food, including soups, salads and sandwiches, another enticing factor is the price. It is affordable for not only individuals, but also the many groups who choose to hold their meetings at Tango. “We host Rotary Club every week, BNI (Business Networking International) weekly, Chamber of Commerce every month, the annual Bonner General Hospital Heart Ball and several small groups each day,” said Judy.

And for anyone who has ever visited Tango Café they know the friendly staff is an added bonus. As for Judy, she said is grateful to her family and friends who have supported her during her long hours in her quest to make Tango the favorite of many. “And of course our great customers have made us what we are today,” said Judy gratefully. Tango Café is open Monday through Friday from 7am to 5pm serving breakfast all day. They are closed on holidays and weekends. To view Tango Cafe’s menu log onto www.tangocafé-sandpoint.com. Shop Local – Make This One of Your New Year’s Resolutions By Patty Hutchens

It’s a New Year and a time to make those ever popular resolutions! This year I would like to challenge you to make a different and unique resolution that will not only benefit you, but also your community. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not traveling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for your shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time, but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up.

As we enter 2014 why not make a resolution to do as much of your shopping locally as possible. The benefits to your community are many. Small business owners are known for their contributions to the many non-profit agencies that in turn help our friends, neighbors and colleagues. Statistics show they are two and half times more likely to do so than the large chain stores. Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the “big box” stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our nonprofits during the down times in their lives. Shop Local in 2014!

New Year’s Resolutions Simple Steps To Achieve Your Goals for 2014 By Patty Hutchens

New Years Resolutions

T

he holidays are over, and as we pack away the ornaments, take down the lights and return to our regular routine, we begin to look forward to the New Year. And with that usually comes a reflection on the past 12 months and a focus on how things can be different in the year ahead. We silently begin to formulate our New Year’s resolutions. While we begin with good intentions, our resolutions are often forgotten by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. According to a report published by the University of Scranton in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45% of people make New Year’s resolutions, but a mere 8% actually achieve their goal. So the question becomes how can we be more successful in achieving those self imposed objectives? When you look at what the top ten New Year’s resolutions typically are, it is no surprise that the rate of failure is so high. Included in the list are the following goals: lose weight, become more organized, become more fiscally responsible, exercise and eat right, quit smoking and spend more time with family and friends. Do you recognize those promises? I am sure many of us have made a personal vow to do our best to achieve at least one of them. But if you read through them again, take note of the fact they are all very subjective in nature. One way we can do better at achieving our resolutions is be very concrete when setting a goal. Yes, losing weight and living a more active lifestyle are great goals to have, but it is how we achieve our goals that should be the focus of our New Year’s resolutions. Instead of lose weight, why not commit to joining an exercise class twice a week? If you want to eat healthier, commit to more home cooked nutritious meals and limit the number of times you eat at restaurants. If you would like to volunteer more time to your community, you should make your resolution to volunteer with a favorite organization for a set number of hours per week. Making the goal a concrete one with a way to measure your success will make it much easier to track and more likely you will achieve it. Remember too to make your goal a realistic one. For instance, if you are not currently attending any exercise classes, do not suddenly commit to five days per week at the gym. Doing so will leave you discouraged and more likely to give up on going all together.

34   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

For many individuals and couples they make a resolution to pay off their debt over the course of the upcoming year. A good way to achieve this is not to say you will pay off all your debt, but instead set your budget at the beginning of the year and decide what is realistic for you to pay towards that debt each month.

So the question becomes how can we be more successful in achieving those self imposed objectives? Another reason many of us fail at our goals is that we do not share our goals with others, the result of which is we have no accountability. The explosion of social media in recent years has made it easier to communicate with others near and far about our daily activities. Why not include our goals in that? To the extent you are comfortable doing so, share your goals with others whom you trust to help keep

New Years Resolutions you on track. Better yet, find a friend who shares the same goals and hold one another accountable. Remaining positive plays a critical role in achieving success of your New Year’s resolutions. This is easier said than done, but is important in keeping you motivated. If you made a resolution to go to the gym three times a week but only made it once, focus on the fact that once is one more time than what you did in the past. Keeping track of your accomplishments, whether on a calendar or in a journal, will help keep your motivation strong! Lastly, set goals that can fit into your schedule. If you are like most people, your schedule is packed with work, kids’ activities and household chores leaving little time for you. Schedule those activities that will help you achieve your goals into your calendar just as you would any other activity. Soon, those activities will become a regular part of your routine.

Looking for Ideas for a New Year’s resolution? Here are some ideas to help you get started on your journey: • Instead of taking the elevator, climb the stairs to help incorporate more exercise into your daily routine. • Don’t be tempted by credit card purchases. Remove your credit cards from your wallet and put them in a safe place where you can use them for emergency only situations.

living

shopping and even prepare some of the food in advance. This will help reduce the temptation of take out food or going out to eat when your hectic schedule becomes overwhelming. • Take care to schedule personal time into your busy schedule. Whether it’s a spa day to pamper yourself at home or at a salon, spending time with your kids playing a game free of distractions, or finding time to reconnect with a friend, you will find the time spent on you and those whom you love helps to reenergize you. • Purchase a journal and take the time to use it to reflect on the blessings in your life and also to track your accomplishments towards the goals you have set. It will help you to become more focused on the positive! • Open a savings account or invest in your retirement account. Make this part of your monthly budget and no matter how small the amount you are able to tuck away, you will feel good about having done so.

James B. Lewis, D.M.D. Mark W. Hawn, D.D.S.

• Purchase tools that will help you become more organized. A calendar, plastic totes, or a small filing cabinet will all help you stay organized and help keep the clutter to a minimum.

• Plan your meals out a week in advance. Set time aside for the once a week

Sandpoint Mourns Loss of Two Young Women Friends Were Both Members of the SHS Class of 2012 By Patty Hutchens

F

or the Sandpoint High School graduating class of 2012, the past two months have been a time of extreme sorrow. Having already lost two of their classmates, Will Johnson and Elisabeth Cole, during their high school years, they recently lost two more classmates over the course of less than two weeks. All these young lives were cut short either by a tragic accident or illness, leaving their friends asking many questions. Questions for which there are no answers. Kayle Porter was known to many in this town and was admired for her exceptional work ethic, friendly nature and bright smile. Kayle worked at many local establishments over the course of the last several years, most recently at Shoga Sushi Bar and at the downtown Starbucks. She also was a full time student at North Idaho Community College. Her had work was driven by her dream to attend NYU next year. She loved to travel, enjoyed a sense of adventure and thought New York City would be an exciting place to live. Tragically, on November 27th Kayle’s vehicle was struck by a train

at an uncontrolled train crossing. The accident left the community stunned and saddened. Then just 11 days later her friend and classmate Mikaela Zener passed away from complications from epilepsy. Again the community was left with just one question. Why? While there are no answers, there is the love and support of this exceptional community that is helping those who were affected by these tragedies. And the stories of these young women that have been shared in the days since their deaths are ones that not only bring comfort, but also inspire others to live their lives the way these young women did – taking advantage of every opportunity to make a

Shared by Veronica Aispuro Written by Mikaela Zener You’ve been there for me through the good times and bad, I know I can count on you to be there when I’m sad. Life without you just wouldn’t be right, I wouldn’t be able to get through each night. When I’ve had a bad day I know you’re only a call away. When life takes that crazy turn, You are always there to help me learn. We’ve had so many good times together, I know we’ll be best friends forever. No matter where we are, I know we’ll never be too far. You’re my idol, my sister, my friend, We’ll be together till the end. Even when we’re old and grey, You’ll be here still. To help me get on my way, As I will to you one day. I love ya V.

profound impact on others. Veronica Aispuro was a close friend of both young women. She found the strength she needed to be able to share her message of hope at Mikaela’s funeral. It was inspiring and consoling to those who were in attendance. She said that the Mikaela she knew would want people to move forward and help one another through the grieving process. Veronica echoed the sentiment of many who call Sandpoint their home when she said, “We are not just a community, we are a family.” She shared a poem written to her from Mikaela and fought back the tears as she talked about the friend who was taken from her much too early. Pastor Chad Wilks of the Sandpoint Nazarene Church also delivered an inspiring message at the memorial service for Kayle. He was quick

to acknowledge that in a tragedy such as that which happened to Kayle, many people seek answers. But there are no answers, he said. And while nothing makes sense, we can find comfort in God’s love and the promise of eternal life. He went on to convey some of the memories others had told of how Kayle touched their lives. With both humor and sincerity he was able to share with others the spirit of Kayle who was always inspired to give to others – in many ways. He told how Kayle loved to brighten her Starbucks customers ‘ day by offering a few free lattes each morning. After all, to Starbucks it was a mere $5 but to her customers it made a great start to their morning Kayle said to her co-worker. The crowd chuckled, as many had been recipients of Kayle’s early morning generosity.

But there was also the Kayle who traveled worldwide to help bring a smile to someone’s face. She had participated in a mission trip to Honduras in June 2010, returning with a plea to her parents Kevin and Anita to adopt a child from this poverty stricken country. Her heart was as big as her smile. Kayle had planned to return to Honduras this summer on another mission trip. Instead her brother Jacob and her boyfriend Brandon Gates will do so, carrying on her mission. As for Mikaela she struggled with epilepsy since she was 13 years old but was never one to forget the challenges of others. When she was in Middle School her friend’s mother, Tamara Scrimsher, was diagnosed with cancer. While many struggled with what they could do to help this young mother of three, it was Mikaela’s gift that left a lasting impression on Tamara. “Mikaela took the

time to make me a beautiful cozy blanket while I was going through my chemotherapy treatments,” shared Tamara. It was the comfort of the blanket and the unselfishness of a young teenager who took the time to make such a warm gesture that has stayed with Tamara over the last several years. “I still use that blanket today and will always continue to think of Mikaela and her generous spirit when I wrap myself in it,” said Tamara. Mikaela was also a frequent visitor to Luther Park where her mom Marla works. She enjoyed interacting with the elderly and as a talented artist she enjoyed engaging them in art projects, playing games or just visiting.

She touched many lives. So as we find ourselves and our children grieving over the loss of these two young beautiful women and continuing to grieve over the loss of Will and Elisabeth, we may still find ourselves asking the inevitable question - why? But as we do we should also try to encourage one another to instead focus on the impact these four young people made on our lives and remind one another of the beautiful memories they gave us, the life lessons they taught us and continue to keep their memories alive and share their stories of lives well lived.

enior Josh Travers has been involved in sports his whole life. “My parents were always encouraging me to become an athlete and signed me up for as many sports as possible,” said Josh. But he said it was not until high school that he truly began to excel. And that’s an understatement! As a participant on both the wrestling and football teams, Josh has made his presence known in the world of SHS athletics. In 2011 Josh was the 4A District Wrestling Champion; in 2012 he was the District runner up, and this year he said he is looking to regain his championship. As for football, Josh is a three-year varsity letterman as well as the winner of the 2013 Scholastic Award and the Offensive MVP – the first offensive lineman in Sandpoint history to become offensive MVP. Moving From Obligation To Inspiration Transform Discipline Into Freedom, Struggle Into Grace, And Willpower Into Passion

QUICK TIP

014 is here! A time for renewal, an opportunity to change for the better, a chance to make promises towards your future. You say you want to eat better, exercise more, become more fit and healthy? Now’s the time! On how many New Year’s occasions have you promised yourself and made resolutions that you have not followed through on? How can you make this year different? How can you maintain the motivation to be successful? No matter

what activity we are participating in, success lies in the discipline it takes to maintain through the obstacles that life throws at us. Either out of perceived need or finding enjoyment in an activity, we are able to overcome those obstacles and stay true to our task.

is often frustrating. It is the motivational style employed by most dieters, hence the reason 95% of them fail. Chasing the carrot on the stick takes much effort and discipline, and the promise of reward in the future may not be enough to keep you on track.

External motivators, “I should exercise…I should eat right” are a common point of entry into fitness and nutrition. They may be enough to get you started, but feeling obligated lacks sustainability and

Moving from “I should get in shape” to “I want to be fit” is the way out of the endless cycle of obligation. True desire to make a change enables you to set strongly defined visions and goals that will assist you in January 2014 | Sandpoint Living Local   45

your process. You will fill your tool box with strategies to help you stay with your commitments longer and work towards the win in your future. What do you love doing so much that you become lost in the activity itself? Internal motivators of enjoyment, “I love to”, are powerful and selfgenerated. When we are rewarded from the activity itself, we no longer feel outside pressure to perform and it is easier to maintain. We will triumph even in the face of great obstacles, finding a way to get the job done no matter what. True success comes from mastery, when an activity ceases to be something you do and becomes a way of life. The motivator “I am inspired, just try and stop me” prevails. You will train and eat well because that is how you approach life. Although they will happen, a day without exercise is uncomfortable. It is easy to avoid the foods your body rejects. You have reached the Zone of Inspiration!

Wherever you currently fit on this motivation scale, assess yourself and look at what you can do to move to the next stage. Find your passion in healthy ways to make your resolutions come true. Set small goals and find strength in the support systems that surround you. Be patient, committed, and persistent. Transform discipline into freedom, struggle into grace, and willpower into passion. ach season has its own set of injuries - winter is no exception! The most common injuries seen in our clinic are from winter sports and accidents, especially falls on the ice and snow. After a spell of icy weather and opening of the ski slopes, we start to see more skier's thumb and wrist fractures. Skier's thumb results from a rapid jerk of the thumb backwards, usually with the ski pole in hand. This injury used to be called gamekeeper's thumb, because in medieval times the gamekeeper would break the neck of game birds with that same type of force. This injury can be supported with a splint, but sometimes surgery is needed. Your thumb is considered 50% of your hand function due to the fact our opposable thumb is needed for fine coordination and dexterity. That opposable thumb is what makes us unique and different from apes (hopefully we are different in other ways as well!) Wrist fractures usually result from placing your arm out to break the fall. Tingling and numbness may indicate nerve involvement. Once out of the cast, patients are often surprised that they do not start moving normally right away. The fractures may have healed, but soft tissue and joints are often stiff and swollen. Even a normal hand will become stiff and swollen if held in one position for too long a time. Bodies were meant to move!! It is important to remember that impact may also be transferred to the

elbow, shoulder and neck, resulting in another fracture or soft tissue injury. Just the weight of the cast, which you hold above your heart to reduce swelling, can cause tightness and pain. If you hold your uninjured arm in that position, notice how tired it feels after even a short time. Over use of the opposite arm can cause stiffness and pain stiffness as well. Many people experience injury to the knee, hip or pelvis when the body is thrown out of alignment during a fall, which can throw the body out of balance. We often find that people who have had a fall will be so cautious with their bodies that their balance is compromised. This only sets you up for more falls. Sometimes the body was out of alignment in the first place, so it is important to identify, if possible, how you were injured. A thorough therapy evaluation can help you with that. Winter can also bring other injuries such as tendonitis, aches or strains from activities such as shoveling snow. Using the right tool and correct body mechanics can reduce your chance of injury. If you are injured, prompt therapy can help to decrease the pain, swelling and stiffness so you can regain flexibility and strength. Knowing what to do can make your recovery faster and easier, especially if you have additional health issues that can slow healing such as heart problems, diabetes or arthritis. Get going now and be back in action for Spring!

n the 1960’s and 1970’s the fish of the Great Lakes started washing up on shore with diseases and tumors. The birds that ate those fish became sick, their eggs were brittle and no offspring were produced. Both biologists and environmentalists became very concerned about the extinction of both species. How many of you think any biologist would come to the conclusion that the problem was due to the genes of these animals? How many of you believe the illnesses, cancers, and diseases they had were due to “bad genes?” How many of you think any biologist’s logical solution was to dump drugs and chemotherapy into the lakes, or set up tiny bird and fish hospitals with tiny bird and fish instruments to perform surgery and radiate them when they washed up on shore? Clearly none of this would seem logical, they would look to the environment of the fish and birds and fix it, which is exactly what they did. We must ask ourselves a very difficult paradigm shifting question. Why would this same approach or explanation seem logical for the human species (human animal)? It is absurd that we would blame genes for illness of any other species except our own, and I will tell you why. One of the biggest reasons we don’t ask the questions is it’s very uncomfortable to ask or talk about. Sickness is a tragedy, and it becomes difficult to discuss responsibility, it is mistaken for blame. However, it is not blame, it is empowerment to prevent future illness, disease, and tragedy. Although it may be uncomfortable to ask, its more uncomfortable not to (moral compass). Our genes have remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years, yet the rates of which chronic disease are increasing are exponential (especially the past 100 years). One argument is that we are living longer. How is that possible when the greatest increase in

48   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

diseases today is in our children and younger populations? No other mammalian species comes anywhere close to the heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, acid reflux, anxiety, depression, infertility, anger, resentment, and lack of community that we do. We have been fooled into considering a human is not an animal, and now believe we don’t have to abide by the same biological laws all animals do. Ask yourself when has any animal been put in captivity and become healthier? To some it might terrify or anger you, perhaps a feeling of guilt. Guilt will not serve you, and the truth as always can set you free. If someone was suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, who would rush in to the dentist and ask to be stuck with cortisone or have it pulled out? I would venture to suggest most would ask to have it removed and fix the cause. I firmly believe everyone wants to express health and vitality and avoid sickness and disease. Too often people shrink their lives to fit their physical capabilities and create a ceiling. Disease is extremely complex with so many contributing factors of bioaccumulation that no one factor causes one disease (do all smokers get lung cancer?). However health is quite simple if we only learn what TRUE health is and how we must achieve it. Are we making food choices based on how they make us feel, or how we feel afterwards? How many times have you every regretted eating an apple or going for a walk. Are you concerned about living a better moment or a better life? I hope this has provoked thought; it’s a seed of hope. We look forward to working with you and watching that seed grow. If you want to learn how, call us and remember most importantly the quality of your choices determines the quality of your life.

Find The Right Balance For Your Life

t is estimated that the care of sick, elderly and disabled family members and friends generally falls on the shoulders of more than 42 million Americans, and yet most people don’t think of themselves as caregivers. What begins as an act of love can quickly turn into a mountain of stress and exhaustion, as the needs of the infirm become more demanding. This, in turn, can prompt feelings of guilt and depression, yet still be very rewarding for the caregiver. Ask yourself the questions below and you may be surprised to learn that while you are doing something out of love, you may very well be considered a “caregiver.” * Do you currently help a loved one with tasks such as cleaning, or keeping up with the yard or laundry? * Do you help pick up medication or remind a friend or family member to take their medication? * Do you regularly cook or provide food for a loved one? * Do you drive a friend or family member to doctor’s appointments, shopping trips or on other errands? * Do you provide personal care to a loved one, such as bathing, dressing or helping them to the bathroom? * Do you help take care of their finances or pay their bills? * Are you stressed by the additional responsibilities you’ve had to take on to help a loved one? * Do you spend so much time and energy taking care of your loved one that you sometimes neglect yourself or your immediate family? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you are a caregiver. This means that you could find yourself juggling new roles such as nurse, housekeeper, accountant,

Yellowstone National Park A Place For All Ages By Jessica Herbig

I

f you’ve never been to Yellowstone, there’s no time like the present to experience some of the natural wonders that still exist in our country! Some of us have gone as kids and some of us remember some of what we experienced. But as an adult, Yellowstone National Park is a place full of amazing sights and experiences that will give us memories for a lifetime. There are five entrances to Yellowstone, allowing one to enter from all corners of the country. If you hit the north entrance, you’ll pass through Gardiner, Montana. This entrance is the only one open year around. The others close during the winter season due to poor road conditions. If you enter via the North entrance, the scenery alone is worth the trip and you will quickly learn how Montana has earned its nickname “The Big Sky State.” Gardiner is classic small town Americana, with family owned restaurants, and a burgeoning number of fly fishing shops for those who are headed down to fish the famous Yellowstone River. You’ll head south through the Roosevelt Arch and pay your dues at the North Entrance Station. A $25 fee gets you a week long pass into the park, though you can get an annual park pass for $50. You’ll get a map showing the routes through the park, locations of famous

sites such as Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs, as well as available campsites. As far as lodging goes, there are places to stay through the park for people of all adventure-seeking levels. You can stay in comfort at a lodge at Mammoth Hot Springs or by Old Faithful, as well as camp in various locations through the park with your tent or camper, all with a wide variety of amenities. Anywhere you choose to stay, you’re sure to enjoy what the area has to offer. It’s said that it takes about a day and a half to drive the scenic loop through Yellowstone Park. From the North Entrance it is 5 miles to Mammoth Hot Springs where herds of elk bed down on the lush green lawns in the center of town. If you stay here, you’ll likely see a few large bull elk vying for the attention of the ladies. This can get rather exciting because park rangers will sometimes have to block off road traffic because bull elk won’t clear the roadway to let people through safely! Count on delays going into the fall when the elk are in rut. Better yet, make Mammoth Hot Springs your first stop for exploration when you enter the park! Fifty-nine miles from the North Entrance, you’ll find Old Faithful. The road there will give you a peek at buffalo, elk, bear, birds, and a multitude of wildlife. This is not the highest shooting geyser in the park, but its name comes from the regularity of its explosions. Park rangers can predict when the geyser will go off within a timespan of 10 minutes. There is a lodge at Old Faithful as well as an information center and exploration/discovery center for children. If you arrive at Old Faithful between bursts, this is a great way to occupy your time, especially with little children, while waiting for the next eruption. The best time to view the wildlife in the area is in the morning after first light and in the evening right before dark. On summer’s hottest days, the wildlife bed down mid-day to conserve energy. A bonus to getting up early is the spectacular sunrises you can see from various vantage points in the park. Visitors travel from across the world to see Yellowstone. The geysers, bubbling paint pots, natural springs, and the multitude of outdoor activities draw people of all levels of outdoor experience to experience its wonder. Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Mouth Care Keep Your Pet Healthy & Happy By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital, Sandpoint, Idaho www.idahovet.com / ask@idahovet.com / 208.265.5700 Why should I brush my dog’s or cat’s teeth?

no problem, he or she can have 1-2 cleaning visits yearly at the veterinary hospital.

Plaque is actually an accumulation of bacteria that we know is bad for the mammalian body. Daily removal of plaque is the key to an oral hygiene program. Unless your pet’s teeth are brushed daily, plaque will build uap at the gum line. Eventually calculus forms, further irritating the gums, and then infection progresses to loosen and destroy the attachment of the tooth. In addition to loose teeth, infection under the gum line can spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.

Can I just take my fingernail or a dental scaler to remove the calculus?

How can I brush my animal’s teeth? It CAN be a very easy and fun procedure using a small, non threatening soft-bristled toothbrush. Next, get toothpaste from your veterinarian- chicken and malt flavors make it pet palatable! Stay away from human toothpaste because not only does it taste bad, it has detergents that should not be swallowed. How often does my pet need to have teeth cleaned by the veterinarian?

Dental disease occurs below the gum line. By removing calculus from the tooth, you are not removing disease below the gum line. In order to thoroughly help your pet, plaque and calculus must be removed from below the gum line. In addition, dental scalers that are not properly cared for can actually scrape the enamel. Besides setting up a rough surface for plaque to accumulate faster, damage to the enamel can expose dentin, which is very sensitive to air and temperature. Do you have to use anesthesia to clean my pet’s teeth? Anesthesia is necessary when performing teeth cleaning. Anesthesia provides three important functions: immobilization in order to clean properly above and below the gum line, pain relief, and the ability to place a tube into the windpipe, so bacterial products do not enter the lungs.

It depends on the degree of plaque and tartar accumulation. Cats accumulate differently from dogs, and there is much variation between species. We have seen pretty pearly whites on very old Labrador Retrievers and trench mouth in fairly young Miniature Poodles. Generally, the smaller the head, the more crowded the teeth, the thicker the plaque, calculus, and disease. One needs to examine your pet’s teeth monthly. Look for an accumulation of yellow or brown material at the area where the tooth meets the gum line especially over the cheek teeth and canines.

I am concerned about the anesthesia. Is it safe?

Once you notice plaque or tartar accumulation, it is time for a professional cleaning. Do not wait. When gingivitis is left untreated, it will progress to periodontitis, which is non-curable. The inflammation caused by periodontitis will resolve when treated. If you cannot brush your pet’s teeth,

North Idaho Animal Hospital dental care procedure has eleven separate steps:

52   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

We take every effort to provide safe anesthesia. We use gas anesthetic agents; dogs and cats are given pre-operative tests depending on their age and condition to qualify them for anesthesia; and patients are monitored while anesthetized both visibly and with similar monitoring devices as used in human hospitals. cleaning

It is difficult to determine precisely what the procedure will cost until we know the status of your pet’s teeth and gums. We can quote general cleaning and radiograph fees; every patient has these in common. Fees are based on severity plus costs for preoperative testing, anesthesia, and medication such as analgesics and antibiotics. The doctor or technician can provide an initial treatment plan based on exam room findings, anything obvious can of course be quoted. A follow up treatment plan will be communicated to you after a tooth-by-tooth exam is conducted under anesthesia. Fees for all dental services are available by e-mail or fax. What is the best food for my pet? Hard food will help remove plaque from teeth. There are special diets specifically

living

manufactured to help control plaque. Feeding the special diets in conjunction with daily brushing is the best to keep the teeth clean. Diet alone will not control plaque, but it will help. Remember, as with humans, nothing takes the place of daily tooth brushing.

is used to evaluate bone loss around each tooth. Radiograhs are taken to evaluate if the teeth can be saved or need to be extracted.

What toys should I avoid to protect my pet’s teeth?

As soon as puppy or kitten teeth emerge, it’s time to start brushing! Although baby teeth are replaced with adult teeth, the puppy or kitten gets used to the brushing procedure, which continues for life. An easily overlooked problem is malocclusion or improper bite. This should be detected early to prevent head shyness- jaw gridlock and enamel sensitivity causing pain and suffering.

Chewing on objects harder than teeth can easily lead to crown fractures. Be especially careful with cow and horse hoofs. They commonly cause damage to the upper fourth premolars. Tug-of-war games must not be practiced, especially in young dogs and cats in order to avoid moving growing teeth to abnormal locations. Throwing dogs discs can also cause trauma to the teeth, resulting in pulpitis (an inflammation of the pulp). What are cat cavities? Many cats get painful lesions at the gum line that invade teeth, sometimes referred to as tooth resorptions. Unfortunately we do not know what causes tooth resorption, and the most effective treatment involves extraction of the affected tooth. Check to see if your cat has an advanced resorption by pressing a cotton-tipped applicator to the gum line. If a painful lesion is noted, your cat will chatter its jaw. How can I tell if my pet is suffering from periodontal disease? The leading sign is bad breath. Bad breath comes from infection. If your pet’s breath does not smell like roses, it is time to take him to a hospital that has the ability to clean and radiograph your pet’s mouth. What types of tests are done to diagnose dental disease? If your pet has periodontal disease or a fractured tooth, an oral exam is performed while under anesthesia. A periodontal probe

When do I have to start worrying about dental problems with my pet?

What can be done if my pet has periodontal disease? Periodontal disease occurs when tooth support structures are affected by infection. In the beginning stages, cleaning above and below the gum line as well as removal of calculus attached to the tooth will help restore periodontal health. In advanced cases, either periodontal surgery or extractions are performed. Antibiotics given monthly also help to control the progression of periodontal disease. Which animals are at most risk for periodontal disease? Smaller breeds are more prone than larger because the teeth are closer together in small dogs, and they usually live longer. Terriers, Maltese, and Shih Tzus are especially prone to periodontal disease. What can you do to fix a broken tooth? If your dog or cat breaks a tooth, there are two treatments: root canal therapy or extraction. You cannot leave the tooth alone with an exposed nerve. In addition to pain, infection will soon develop that can spread to the rest of your pet’s body.

Project Healing Waters Local Vets Come Together to Focus on Fishing By Colin Anderson

C

hristmas. A day of celebration throughout the Christian world; a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And while Christians worldwide recognize the meaning of the day, the traditional celebration will take on a very diverse look depending upon where in the world one lives. By Colin Anderson In the bottom level of the VA hospital in Spokane, a group meets weekly. Some might call it therapy, others might see it as counseling, but it’s clear the members of this group see it as camaraderie. Each Tuesday at 9:00am veterans and volunteers gather to tie flies in anticipation of the upcoming fishing season. These vets are part of a national organization called Project Healing Waters which teaches everything about fly-

fishing to recovering warriors and disabled veterans. Participants learn fly tying, casting, and rod building, and when they’re ready to put their skills to the test, they’re paired with local guides who volunteer their services to those who have sacrificed for all of us.

Norm Scott heads up the Spokane program, one of one hundred and fifty seven programs across the country. He’s been with Project Healing Waters for about a year and a half and has watched it grow from something very minimal to helping more than 50 local veterans.

At today’s group there are seven vets representing nearly every branch of service. Some served in Iraq, others in Vietnam and Korea, and on this day ninety-one year old Lieutenant Colonial Francis Leslie, a World War II bombardier, stopped in to see his son Rob help his fellow vets tie a few flies. Two men are in wheelchairs and two others have lost their vision, but with the help of volunteers each is able to create a great looking bug that could fool just about any rainbow, brown, or cutthroat.

“Our volunteers really drive this program,” said Scott. “By the end of the year, ten of us will have logged more than two thousand hours helping these vets have something else to think about than the aches and pains.”

54   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

Nationally more than eight thousand veterans have taken part in the program and volunteers have logged more than one hundred and twenty thousand hours this year alone. National organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishing Clubs have pledged their support to

Community

Project Healing Waters, and with a paid staff of just five, more than ninety-five percent of all donations go directly to the veterans. Feathers, hooks, rod blanks, and other equipment come from local businesses and local fishermen. Drift boats, rafts, waders, boots and more are provided by guides who are passionate about the program. This past year the Spokane program went on nine trips including two that were televised on the show ‘Trout TV.’ They’ve fished the Northport, Coeur d’Alene, and Yakima Rivers and hope to get to the St. Maries and St. Joe this upcoming summer. All transportation, tents, cabins, meals, and gear are provided at no cost.

Norm Scott is planning the upcoming season and anticipating more participation and more days on the water. He’s also planning a few more lake trips to accommodate those in wheelchairs or those who can’t get around as well. He’s always on the lookout for additional equipment, volunteers, guides, and of course funding. Project Healing

living

Waters does not receive any government funding and relies on private and corporate donations to keep the program going. If you have equipment, time, or dollars you would like to donate to this program you can email Norm at nscott41@gmail.com or visit www.projecthealingwaters.org, Spokane Chapter.

Upstairs in a slightly smaller room a group of female veterans is tying as well. While not as large a group, these women are clearly passionate about tying flies which is evidenced by the massive amount of feathers on the table and a bit quicker pace than their gentlemen counterparts downstairs. There are smiles and jokes, but also thankfulness when the program is brought up. One member mentions that she’d probably be wasting away in the woods somewhere if she hadn’t found this program which gave her a focus. The weekly get together is scheduled to last two hours, but some will tie well into the afternoon. This room is where the men’s group started and outgrew and these women hope to see their numbers increase as well.
