Jackie Suarez REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? True to Autumn, our market is in transition after a slight warming trend. Buyers have watched prices fall like leaves until the value justiies a purchase. Investors with ready cash have been rewarded for their patience. While the forecast for mortgage interest rates is mixed, lenders are performing at lightning-fast speeds compared to past underwriting and appraisal timelines. Rising interest rates increase pressure on borrowers with marginal buying power. In this environment, more sellers are willing to nance their property sales and reap their gains in the form of interest over time. In the past 30 days, Bonner and Boundary County cash buyers accounted for 42% of residential sales. * As winter approaches, many land sellers have adjusted prices in anticipation of a market cool-down. Currently, 11% of parcels listed in Bonner and Boundary Counties are in escrow. Vacant landowners overall are negotiable - sales prices average 72% of asking price. Sellers, keep in mind that land buyers have the “green” to spend - 71% of land sales in the past month were cash transactions. A shining star is the Schweitzer Mountain market where inventory is increasing among a storm of activity with new construction. News of the ski resort’s acquisition by Alterra Mountain Company has attracted global attention and may serve as a rainmaker for our local economy. Stay tuned (like your skis and boards) for updates. Timing is everything – the fourth quarter of 2023 may be the right time for buyers and sellers to recognize opportunity in our four-season market. Three tips for navigating this market: 1. Get advice from full-time real estate professionals who are experts in your local market. 2. Sellers: Price, timing and marketing are important. Focus on your presentation, be aware of other competing properties and be ready to negotiate. Monitor the market – owners with too much “blue sky” in their expectations might need to reconsider their approach. Bu 3. Buyers, get familiar with your target area and be ready to recognize a good buy. Make sure you’re on solid ground nancially. If you’re borrowing, have a lender with a proven track record working for you. Thoroughly inspect any property you decide to purchase.

Our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same - God, Family and Relationships.

Celebrating the Holidays with Gratitude

for Our Community

The holiday season is a time of reflection, joy and togetherness. It’s a time when we gather with friends and family to celebrate traditions, exchange gifts and create cherished memories. However, it’s also a time to express our gratitude for the wonderful communities that surround us.

Our communities play a crucial role in shaping our lives and experiences. They provide us with support, friendship, and a sense of belonging that is invaluable, especially during the holidays. Being grateful for our community is an important aspect of celebrating the season. One of the most beautiful aspects of this time of year is the way communities come together to support one another. Whether it’s through charitable acts, volunteering, or simply being there for each other, the holiday spirit tends to bring out the best in people. We see food drives, toy collections, and charity events that exemplify the compassion and generosity of our communities.

In our November/December edition of Sandpoint Living Local, you will find holidayinspired articles to help prepare you for the season. ‘Tis the season of giving, so we’re highlighting Sandpoint Lions Club and their annual Toys for Tots; the Hoot Owl’s weekly soup kitchen and free Thanksgiving dinner; and the Festival of Trees and its new host— Community Resource EnVision Center. And there’s so much more! Be sure to check out our holiday shopping pages, featuring some great local businesses to visit for all your holiday shopping needs. In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, the holidays offer us a chance to reconnect with our roots, our communities, and each other. Let us take a moment this holiday season to be grateful for the incredible network of people who surround us, and to celebrate with an open heart the unity, diversity, and love that our communities bring into our lives. After all, it is this sense of togetherness that makes the holidays truly magical.

T

he holiday season is a time of enchantment and camaraderie; a chance to gather with loved ones and revel in the magic of the festivities. Yet, amidst the flurry of extravagant celebrations and opulent feasts, there exists a distinct allure in embracing the art of simplicity. This is where the concept of hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season comes to the forefront—a delightful way to foster genuine connections and create lasting memories. In an age of extravagance, the charm of simplicity shines ever brighter. As the holiday season approaches, the allure of uncomplicated gatherings holds a special place in our hearts. Rather than being consumed by elaborate decorations and menus, we can find fulfillment in cultivating an ambiance of warmth and authenticity. The foundation of a successful small dinner party lies in the choice of guests. By keeping the guest list intimate, consisting of cherished friends and close family members, the stage is set for meaningful conversations and an atmosphere of genuine relaxation. Personalized invitations, whether handwritten notes or carefully crafted digital messages, communicate a sense of significance that resonates with each individual. When it comes to decorating for such an intimate affair, less truly is more. Simplicity extends to the table itself—a tastefully arranged setting with minimal embellishments, a scattering of candles casting a warm glow, and perhaps a touch of verdant foliage to infuse a hint of nature’s elegance. The aim is not to overwhelm the senses but to create an environment where heartfelt interactions take center stage. Culinary artistry can find its zenith in the simplicity of a thoughtfully curated menu. While the allure of an elaborate banquet looms large, a well-prepared selection of dishes can leave a more indelible mark. A seasonal menu, carefully crafted from the freshest ingredients, can evoke the essence of the holidays. A succulent roast as the centerpiece, flanked by a selection of thoughtfully chosen sides and crowned with a delectable

from ordinary to extraordinary. A PERSONAL TOUCH CAN ELEVATE THE EVENING

dessert, can become a symphony of flavors that resonates in the memory. A personal touch can elevate the evening from ordinary to extraordinary. Place cards handwritten with care, sharing anecdotes about the dishes served, or even presenting guests with a small token of appreciation to take home. Weaving these gestures into the fabric of the gathering adds depth to the experience. It’s the attention to detail and the infusion of your personality that make the occasion truly unforgettable. Introducing interactive elements into the evening can transform it into a tapestry of shared joy. Engaging games, collaborative DIY projects or even a storytelling session can weave bonds that extend beyond the event itself. These activities unlock a realm of shared experiences, fostering connections that linger long after the evening draws to a close. Hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season is a 20

finely orchestrated art. It begins with meticulous planning, outlining the guest list and dispatching invitations in advance. This groundwork enables you to focus on the nuances that elevate the evening from ordinary to exceptional, ensuring every aspect is infused with thoughtfulness and intention. Central to the art of hosting is the menu. Instead of inundating yourself with an exhaustive spread, curate a selection of dishes that harmonize with one another and encapsulate the essence of the season. Accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions ensures everyone feels catered to and cherished. Timing is a silent conductor in this symphony of flavors and interactions. A well-structured timeline, guiding the presentation of each dish and the progression of the evening, maintains a harmonious flow. This foresight prevents lastminute rushes, allowing you to bask in the company of your guests and partake in the magic you’ve conjured.

Conversations are the threads that weave the evening into a vibrant tapestry. amie Zimmerman spent much of her adolescence and young adulthood bouncing back and forth between Bonner County and Colorado, but Idaho has always been her true home. “I have so many connections to the community and people of Sandpoint, and this has always been the place I consider home,” Jamie explained. About 15 years ago, Jamie and her husband, Ted, permanently returned to Sandpoint to raise their three children. Over the past decade and a half, Jamie has been an integral part of the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD), serving as a parent, parent organization member, secretary and, for the past four years, a fourth-grade teacher at Washington Elementary. From the time she was a young girl, Jamie always knew that she wanted to be a teacher. “I have always enjoyed working with young children, and teaching was my plan for as long as I can remember,” she noted. Jamie’s teaching career began when she lived in Colorado, and after moving back to Bonner County, she spent more than 10 years working at Sandpoint Children’s Learning Center (SCLC). While working at SCLC, Jamie’s passion for teaching was spurred on by her boss, Carol Millard, whom Jamie describes as “one of the most amazing humans and the best preschool teacher I have ever known.” Currently, Jamie serves as a mentor teacher and key member of Washington Elementary’s Leading Learning Team, a group of teachers who seeks to help the school’s staff collaborate and understand student data to best serve the needs of the student body.

“Being a mentor and part of a learning community gives you the opportunity to collaborate and learn / try new strategies to help all our students have the best opportunities to learn.” “As teachers, we are constantly learning and having to adjust our strategies,” Jamie examined. “Being a mentor and part of a learning community gives you the opportunity to collaborate and learn / try new strategies to help all our students have the best opportunities to learn.” Outside of teaching, Jamie loves any activity that involves friends and fun. During the summer, you can often find her out on the lake or hiking one of the area’s many scenic trails with her family, and in the wintertime, she spends nearly every weekend at Schweitzer. Ultimately, for Jamie, Sandpoint feels like home because of the “awesome community” that she and her family are surrounded by every day, both at school and in everyday life. “I love our team at Washington and am so lucky to be surrounded by these people,” Jamie described. “I wouldn’t be who I am without them.”

enior Taylor Granier is about as involved in the Sandpoint High School (SHS) community as physically possible. As the class president for all four years of high school, a student council member, Cedar Post staff writer and cheerleader, she embodies what it means to be a Bulldog. “I love being able to be someone who people can reach out to, whether it’s ideas or questions, and being the person that can help,” Taylor described. “I love being a part of the school atmosphere for dances, games or any event, and by being in Student Council and as a cheerleader, it is a great way to create a positive school culture that can keep improving.” Throughout her high school years, Taylor has made a mark through her selfless service, volunteering for organizations such as Panhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE), Ready For Kindergarten, Walk for Hope and the Hoot Owl Café soup kitchen.

“After coming in as a freshman, I was very nervous for my first time volunteering,” Taylor recalled. “Since then, I have learned to love helping the community and being able to give back for all of the amazing things they do for the school.” One of Taylor’s favorite high school memories came during her sophomore year when she got to participate in the Battle for the Paddle spirit competition for the first time. “This is an event I always enjoyed growing up, and could not wait to be a part of, but unfortunately missed my freshman year because of COVID,” Taylor noted. “So, to finally experience it as an SHS student was very exciting, especially after being a part of all the hard work that went into it.” Taylor explained that she has grown the most at SHS in her leadership abilities, and she credits her first Student Council advisor, Mary Imaz, as a big reason why.

“I love being able to be someone who people can reach out to, whether it’s ideas or questions, and being the person that can help.” “She pushed me out of my comfort zone, which made me who I am today,” Taylor said. When she is not planning a school function or cheering at a sporting event, one of Taylor’s favorite hobbies is crocheting. She also enjoys golfing and skiing with her family on the weekends. Taylor plans to attend college— although she is still deciding where—to study business and marketing. She is thankful for the four seasons in Sandpoint and the beauty of the lake and mountains, but she is even more appreciative of the supportive community she is surrounded by. If you ask her family, friends or classmates, they will tell you there is no bigger advocate for that community than Taylor. “By knowing I can have a hand in helping someone love high school as much as I do, then I know it’s all been worth it,” Taylor concluded.

“I was able to make huge gains by training alone … pushing myself beyond what I thought I could do,” Jett recalled. The dividends of Jett’s determination, not only last winter on the soccer field but also throughout his high school career both inside and outside of the classroom, are paying off. As a leading goal-scorer on the Bulldogs soccer team and a top student in his class, Jett has accomplished a lot already in three-and-a-half years at Sandpoint High School (SHS). In addition to his prowess on the soccer field, Jett showed his versatility this fall as a kicker on Sandpoint’s football team, where he spent part of the season before turning his attention fully to soccer later in the year. “Honestly, balancing the two sports has not been too big of a challenge for me,” Jett explained. “My coaches both played big parts in making it possible by being flexible with schedules.” About a year ago, Jett picked up guitar, a fun pastime that he now uses as a stress-relieving outlet from sports.

“Playing guitar and creative writing keeps me sane when I can’t play any more soccer,” Jett joked. After he graduates in the spring, Jett plans to attend college, where he hopes to continue his soccer career at the next level. “College is undoubtedly in the books,” Jett said. “And I am currently working on finding a good school and a career that I can fall in love with and take life into new and exciting chapters.”

Growing up in Sandpoint, Jett has come to appreciate not only the natural beauty of Bonner County but also the tight-knit community in the area. He looks at his soccer coaches, Tanner French and Dan Anderson — both Sandpoint graduates and former collegiate soccer players — as the prime example of individuals willing to give back to the community and help the next generation. “People are willing to enrich a place with already so much potential, which only adds to the beauty of Sandpoint,” Jett concluded. Thanks to his hard work and passion for soccer, academics and the school community, Jett is already following in his coaches’ footsteps, and he has a bright future ahead of him.

LENDING A HAND AND A LITTLE ROAR The Sandpoint Lions Club spreads holiday cheer through Toys For Tots by DAMEN RODRIGUEZ

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

R

ight here in Sandpoint, a group of dedicated individuals has been quietly working behind the scenes to create a better, brighter future for their community. This dedicated team is none other than the Sandpoint Lions Club, a symbol of benevolence, generosity, and a touch of that classic Idaho spirit. Since its inception seven decades ago, the Sandpoint Lions Club has been on a mission to serve, uplift and support the remarkable community it calls home. The brainchild of several local businessmen, the club was born from a shared desire to give back. Janice Rader, the current club president, reflects on its origins, saying, “The Sandpoint Lions Club began in 1953. Several local businessmen began the club to provide support for our amazing community. We are currently moving forward with technology and bringing our programs into a more modern format.” But what exactly is the Sandpoint Lions Club all about? To answer this question, we delved deep into its heart and soul, unraveling its myriad initiatives that encompass love and compassion. The Sandpoint Lions Club orchestrates a symphony of good deeds that resonate throughout the year. Their Sight and Hearing program ensures that low-income members of the community receive the gift of clear vision and the beauty of sound through eyeglasses and hearing aids. They also play an active role in diabetes awareness by sponsoring children to attend Camp Stix. When the Fourth of July rolls around, Sandpoint comes alive with the Lions Club’s annual parade in the morning and a dazzling display of fireworks at City Beach in the evening. They

provide an Easter egg hunt like no other, where children eagerly hunt for candy-filled eggs, and lucky winners ride away on shiny new bicycles. Education holds a special place in their hearts as well, as they offer scholarships to local high school students pursuing further education, including certificate programs. Halloween turns into a delightful family affair with their annual event featuring trick-ortreating and family fun for all ages. Undoubtedly, it’s during the holiday season that the Sandpoint Lions Club truly shines. Their Toys for Tots program is a beacon of hope for families in need, providing toys and gift certificates to make the holidays a little brighter. The past couple of years have presented unique challenges, particularly with the ongoing pandemic. However, the Sandpoint Lions Club has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability. “We have been changing our programs as needed to help protect our community,” explains Janice. They’ve adapted their Toys for Tots program to prioritize the safety of volunteers and the wellbeing of families in need. By scheduling appointments, they’ve found a way to ensure that the joy of the holiday season reaches every corner of Sandpoint. And speaking of Toys for Tots, this annual campaign holds a special place in the hearts of the Lions Club and the Sandpoint community as a whole. This year’s campaign is no exception, with lofty goals to provide assistance throughout the often-stressful holiday season. And here’s where you come in! The Sandpoint Lions Club is hosting a family Bingo night every month on the third Friday to support their november/december 2023 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL 37

Undoubtedly, it’s during the holiday season that the Sandpoint Lions Club truly shines. programs. So, why not come on down, try your luck, and win some fun prizes while helping to support Toys for Tots? It’s a win-win! When asked about heartwarming stories related to the Toys for Tots campaign, Janice shared a touching tale from the club’s early days. Back then, volunteers established a “Santa’s Workshop” where they lovingly repaired and refurbished old and broken toys. These dedicated individuals poured their time and effort into bringing these toys back to life, knowing that each one would bring joy to a child’s heart. The dedication and determination of these volunteers, she said, “warms my heart! Knowing that those toys were rebuilt in order to be loved is a noble hobby. It is also the heart of recycling itself.” The Sandpoint Lions Club cannot achieve its mission alone. They rely on the support of individuals and businesses in the community. They welcome donations of new toys, items for their Bingo games, and financial contributions at various local banks throughout the year. At the heart of the Sandpoint Lions Club’s endeavors are its volunteers, tirelessly brainstorming ideas and creating meaningful change. Janice encourages anyone interested to join them on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6pm at the Lions Den to witness the magic firsthand. As Janice reflects, “The Sandpoint Lions Club has survived the last few years by listening to the volunteers and changing our path when necessary. We focus on what works, change what needs to be changed, and try to implement new ideas when needed.” The club’s commitment to evolving while staying true to its core mission is its secret to lasting impact. Looking ahead, the Sandpoint Lions Club envisions a future where they continue to grow alongside their members and remain attuned to the ever-changing needs of their community. With unwavering dedication and a heart full of hope, the Sandpoint Lions Club is poised to be the guardian angel that our community needs in times of joy and sorrow. In the warm embrace of this community, the Sandpoint Lions Club stands as a testament to the power of collective goodwill and a reminder that sometimes even the tiniest roar can make the world a better place.

A CARING CROCK-POT COMMUNITY Hoot Owl Café hosts weekly soup kitchen, free Thanksgiving dinner

I

b y C H R I ST I A N W E A N E R

n February 2013, Savannah Mort and her family hosted the first night of what would become a weekly soup kitchen at the Hoot Owl Café in Ponderay, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant then owned by Savannah’s mother, Wendy Franck.

“On the first Monday night soup kitchen, I brought two Crock-Pots of soup and fed eight people,” Savannah recalled. “I had a few people ask if it was worth it. For me, if we feed one person who needs it (nutritionally, spiritually, or just a friend), it will always be worth it.” Now, nearly 10 years, thousands of meals served and a new restaurant owner later, the Monday night soup kitchen is still going strong, serving 150 to 200 meals each week in addition to a yearly free Thanksgiving dinner. Savannah initially got the idea for the soup kitchen after her husband, Shaun, requested that their family serve food together to celebrate his birthday. She explained that “God laid it on [her] heart” that instead of serving at a soup kitchen they should start their own, prompting her to ask her mom if they could use the Hoot Owl. From the beginning, the Hoot Owl has provided a large pot of soup each week for the meal, in addition to full access to the facilities, but the rest of the food and labor are dependent upon financial donations and volunteer support. “We do depend on donations of food, time and [money] to keep it running,” Savannah noted. “God has been faithful to provide and meet all of our needs.” When Savannah was growing up, Wendy would host an annual “orphan” Thanksgiving at her family’s home for those who had no place to go

for the holiday. This yearly event inspired Savannah to begin their own version by providing a free Thanksgiving dinner at the Hoot Owl. “It is such a blessing to be able to celebrate this holiday with the people from our community, servers and customers,” Savannah described. “This meal is really an ‘everyone is welcome’ meal.” Approximately 450 free Thanksgiving meals were served at the Hoot Owl in 2022. During a chance encounter in June 2022 when he was stopping in to pick up food, Josh Butler struck up a conversation with Wendy about another food service venture he was working on, and she asked him to consider purchasing the Hoot Owl instead. Josh officially took over sole ownership in October of last year, and continuing to support Savannah and the soup kitchen was one of his highest priorities. “Because of my faith, none of this is mine,” Josh explained, looking around the restaurant. “All of this has been given to me for God’s purposes and for kingdom work, and that’s what [the soup kitchen] is.”

42

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

Both Savannah and Josh describe the work that they do at the Hoot Owl as a “ministry,” giving them the opportunity to use their time and talent to love and support those in need. “Whether I am here or not, just allowing them to utilize the building and providing them with the soup every week, [those things] are not mine,” Josh examined. “It does not belong to me, [but] it’s been given to me to steward well and bless others.” “This soup kitchen ministry is really my love letter or thank you note back to the Lord for his constant, faithful provisions,” Savannah added. The weekly night soup kitchen takes place from 4 to 6pm every Monday evening. For those interested in volunteering, donating or learning more, search “Hoot Owl Café” on Facebook or call the restaurant at 208.265.9348. Thanksgiving dinner will be served 11am to 3pm Thanksgiving day, first come, first served. For those who are unable to enjoy their meal at the restaurant, to-go orders will be available after 1pm.

usband and wife John Satterberg and Brandy Hovie-Satterberg are the proud owners of Satterberg Design | Build and Layered Fine Homewares here in Sandpoint.

From a young age, both Brandy and John grew up around construction sites; John in a car seat traveling to job sites on the weekends with his dad, who is a construction lender, while Brandy would accompany her dad, an excellent carpenter, to work. John began his career in construction working for a production home builder in 2005. He managed two subdivisions totaling 108 homes built before founding Satterberg Construction Corporation in 2006. As Satterberg Construction Corporation, they have built over 60 homes, renovated several homes, and purchased, sold and developed vacant lots and land. Brandy, who holds her Principal Brokers license, began her career in real estate sales in 2009 and has been involved in over 300 transactions. Upon moving to Sandpoint, she felt called to use her skills and experience in a different capacity. Over the many years working side by side with her husband, she has designed and made all selections for Satterberg’s spec home builds and assisted clients, friends and family with selections and projects, and managed numerous renovations. She loves the creative process and sharing her amazing skills and ability with others. After coming to Sandpoint for a family vacation in June of 2020, and driving across the Long Bridge on that beautiful summer day, the couple knew this was the place they wanted to call home. Within days, they were already planning their move. “We like to say that Sandpoint brought

us here, not the other way around,” Brandy reflects. They have lived in Sandpoint for the past two-and-a-half years. Earlier this year, the couple opened Satterberg Design | Build, a DBA of their parent company, Satterberg Construction Corporation. “John and I love to create and to channel inspiration into something physical and tangible. We love turning ideas into reality and figuring out how to do this and why. We love to push the limits of what we believe is possible. We love the relationships that we create. We are very blessed for the career that we have and for the risks we take and for the lessons learned and to be learned,” Brandy affirms. “The reward is in the journey for us.” Their services offered include, but are not limited to, custom renovations, custom builds, interior and exterior design—including the largest and smallest details as well as offering the furnishings, homewares, beautiful books, fine jewelry, artistry chocolate and other thoughtfully selected gift options that they carry in their downtown Sandpoint storefront/studio, Layered Fine Homewares. “Come check it out,” Brandy encourages. “Christmas is right around the corner.” John and Brandy invite you to stop by, say hi, and let them help you realize your design and build dreams.

heart A Joyful I

n the pursuit of a healthier life, we often focus on the physical aspects—regular exercise, balanced diets and sufficient sleep. However, a growing body of research has revealed that happiness, that elusive and subjective emotion, plays a pivotal role in our overall wellbeing. Beyond its emotional benefits, happiness has been scientifically linked to improved cardiovascular health, healthier eating patterns and exercise habits, a stronger immune system, and more. This intriguing connection underscores the importance of nurturing our emotional state alongside our physical efforts.

and cardiovascular health. When we experience happiness, our bodies release hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, which promote relaxation and lower stress levels. Reduced stress directly translates to a healthier heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. A study conducted by the American Heart Association found that individuals with positive emotional well-being were less likely to develop coronary heart disease. This highlights the tangible impact of happiness on our cardiovascular system and emphasizes the need to prioritize our emotional health.

discovered a significant correlation between happiness and dietary habits. When we’re happy, we’re more likely to opt for nutritious foods that nourish our bodies. On the flip side, negative emotions often lead to comfort eating, where unhealthy, high-calorie foods are consumed as a coping mechanism. By fostering happiness, we can consciously influence our food choices, contributing to long-term health. Moreover, the connection between happiness and exercise is a reinforcing cycle. Engaging in physical activities releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins induce a sense of happiness and euphoria, promoting regular exercise. Simultaneously, when we’re happy, we’re more inclined to engage in physical activities that we enjoy, leading to increased motivation and adherence to workout routines. This synergy between happiness and exercise underscores the importance of integrating joyful movement into our lives. In the era of health concerns, bolstering our immune system has never been more crucial. Emerging research reveals that happiness has a direct impact on the immune system’s efficacy. The stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune response, is regulated by positive emotions. When we’re happy, cortisol levels decrease, allowing our immune system to function optimally. Furthermore, studies have shown that happier individuals tend to recover faster from illnesses and have a reduced susceptibility to infections. This connection serves as a compelling reason to prioritize activities that bring us joy and cultivate an emotionally positive environment. Delving deeper into the physiological realm, happiness has been linked to cellular health and longevity. Telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, play a crucial role in cellular aging. Shortened telomeres are associated with age-related diseases and a decreased lifespan. Remarkably, a study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, found that individuals reporting higher levels of happiness had longer telomeres. This suggests that happiness may contribute to slowing down the cellular aging process, leading to a longer and healthier life. Stress is an omnipresent adversary in today’s fast-paced world, taking a toll on both our mental and physical health. Enter happiness as a potent stress buffer. When we’re happy, our bodies

release chemicals that counteract the effects of stress hormones. This not only helps us manage stress more effectively but also translates to a healthier body. Chronic stress is linked to a plethora of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, compromised immune function and mental health disorders. By cultivating happiness, we equip ourselves with a powerful tool to mitigate the harmful effects of stress. The interplay between happiness and physical health is undeniably intricate. As we strive for a healthier life, we must recognize the symbiotic relationship between emotional and physical well-being. Nurturing happiness involves a multifaceted approach that includes practicing gratitude, nurturing social connections, engaging in regular exercise and pursuing activities that spark joy. By integrating these practices into our lives, we set the stage for a harmonious coexistence of happiness and health. It is plain to see that the scientific evidence is resounding: Happiness is far more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a powerful force that directly influences our physical well-being. From enhancing cardiovascular health and encouraging healthier eating patterns to boosting the immune system and promoting cellular health, happiness is an essential ingredient for a healthier life. As we navigate the complexities of modern existence, let us remember that fostering happiness is not only a pursuit of emotional fulfillment but also a proactive investment in our long-term health.

f you’re a long-term investor, your portfolio may stay fairly stable over time. However, that doesn’t mean you will never sell any investments. But when should you sell—and why? Here are some scenarios to consider: • If an investment has consistently underperformed - For one reason or another, some investments may not live up to your expectations. Rather than holding these investments in the hope that they will eventually show consistently positive returns, you might be better off selling them and using the proceeds to buy other investments that could help you make progress toward your goals. Keep in mind, though, that short-term price swings are inevitable for virtually all investments, so you may not want to sell an investment after just a few price drops, as it may still have strong fundamentals and good prospects. • If the investment itself has changed - The nature of some investments, such as stocks, can change over time. Stocks represent companies, and companies can evolve and adapt—or not. So, you may own shares in a company whose management has changed or whose products are less competitive than they once were. If this company no longer seems like a sound investment, you may consider selling your shares and moving on. • If an investment is “redundant” - Over time, you may have added investments that are similar to others you already own. If you do have too many investments that are alike, you risk not having a fully diversified portfolio, and while diversification can’t always protect against all losses or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. Consequently, you might want to sell an investment that may now be

“redundant” to your portfolio and replace it with another one that could boost your diversification efforts. • If an investment takes up too much space in your portfolio - If you bought an investment years ago, and it’s grown substantially in value, it could eventually take up more space in your portfolio than you had intended, which could expose you to more risk than you’d like— because too much of any single investment may leave you more vulnerable to market downturns. Of course, if the investment is still appropriate for your needs, and still has a good outlook, you may not want to totally liquidate it, but you could consider scaling back on the shares you own. • If your own needs have changed - You originally created your investment mix to help you reach certain goals, such as a comfortable retirement. And during much of your working life, you could possibly afford to invest primarily for growth, accepting the risk that comes along with that approach, as you knew you’d have time to potentially overcome the short-term volatility that’s part of investing. But as you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level. Consequently, you could decide to sell some of your growth-oriented investments and move the money into income-producing ones. However, even during retirement, you’ll still need your portfolio to provide some growth opportunities to help you ahead of inflation. Generally speaking, you may not want to do a lot of selling (or buying) of investments once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. But if you are going to sell investments, make sure you do so for the right reasons.

Bonner General Health CEO Sheryl Rickard Reflects on 37 years

A

s I sit down to write this article—my last as the Bonner General Health (BGH) CEO—I feel a surge of emotions. I am filled with appreciation for the opportunity to lead this amazing organization, pride in the growth we have accomplished working together, humility for the things that didn’t go as well as I had hoped, and gratitude for everyone who has taken this journey with me. It has been a true honor and privilege to serve Bonner General Health and the Sandpoint community. No leader accomplishes anything alone. Hundreds of people have been involved in the accomplishments we have experienced over the last 37 years that I have been at BGH, especially the last 19 years since I took the reins as CEO. Being a hospital CEO has been much more than a job—it has been an incredible career filled with inspirational work and people. I couldn’t be prouder of our team’s dedication to putting patients first every day. A few of the accomplishments that I am most proud of are: • Reinstating our BGH Foundation, which has raised well over $1 million to purchase equipment and/or improve the services that we provide. This group of people is generous with their time and talents, and we are so fortunate they have a passion for BGH and the care provided in our community. • Growing our footprint by purchasing the property on Cedar and partnering on the Health Services Building. One of the highlights of my career was to name the Sky Bridge after Jack Parker, a 59-year member of the BGH Board of Directors and great leader, supporter and friend.

• The tremendous growth that we have experienced. Currently, 90 percent of our business is outpatient, which includes lab, diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery, rehabilitation, and medical clinics. • The relationship between hospitals and physicians/providers has changed over the years, with many physicians/providers being employees of hospitals. BGH currently has 12 employed providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants). We are excited that we will be adding more in the near future. • Having a collaborative relationship with the other North Idaho hospitals has allowed us to stay independent while working together to improve the care provided in our region. Looking to the future, I have no doubt that BGH’s best days are still to come. John Hennessy, who will become CEO, is a great leader. He is one of the hardest-working, humble people I know. He will be leading a team that is strong, dedicated and passionate. The BGH management team, providers, staff and volunteers provide highquality, compassionate care each and every day. In closing, I want to express my deepest gratitude to our BGH Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity to be CEO of this remarkable organization and for always steering our organization toward our vision. BGH would not be where we are today without their guidance and support. I leave BGH with fond memories and with relationships with colleagues and co-workers that will continue forever.

UNLOCKING THE SECRET TO RADIANT BEAUTY

The importance of skin care not only for the face but the neck and chest

W

hen it comes to skin care, most people primarily focus on their face, often neglecting the equally vital areas of the neck and chest. However, these often overlooked regions play a crucial role in maintaining overall skin health and radiance. In this article, we will explore the significance of extending your skin-care routine to include the neck and chest and discover the benefits of doing so. Skin Structure and Vulnerability The skin on the neck and chest is thinner and more delicate compared to facial skin. This makes it more susceptible to premature aging, sun damage and sagging. Neglecting this area can result in uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Therefore, it is crucial to pay attention to these regions and incorporate targeted skin-care practices to maintain their health and youthfulness. Sun Protection Just like the face, the neck and chest are exposed to harmful UV rays, which can cause sun damage and contribute to the development of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to these areas is essential to shield the skin from harmful UV radiation. Regular reapplication throughout the day is also necessary, especially during prolonged sun exposure. Moisturization and Hydration The neck and chest are prone to dryness, which can accelerate the aging process and lead to a dull appearance. Incorporating a

hydrating moisturizer into your skin-care routine will help maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, improving its texture and suppleness. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants to provide optimal hydration and combat signs of aging. Exfoliation and Gentle Cleansing Regular exfoliation of the neck and chest is crucial to remove dead skin cells, promote cell turnover and reveal a smoother, more youthful complexion. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or a chemical exfoliant once or twice a week to avoid over-exfoliation. Additionally, cleanse these areas daily with a mild cleanser to remove dirt, makeup and impurities, ensuring a clean canvas for your skin-care products. Anti-Aging Treatments To combat visible signs of aging, incorporating anti-aging treatments into your neck and chest skin-care routine can be highly effective. Retinoids, peptides and collagen-boosting ingredients can help improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles and restore firmness. Applying these treatments regularly, following the recommended usage guidelines, will yield visible improvements over time. In the pursuit of vibrant and youthful skin, it is crucial not to overlook the neck and chest. By extending your skin-care routine to include these areas, you can effectively address common concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and sun damage. Embrace a comprehensive approach to skin care, and unlock the secret to radiant beauty that extends beyond just your face.

Nurturing Your Well-being Through the Power of Appreciation The surprising health benefits of thankfulness

E

mbrace the incredible connection between gratitude and your well-being! Scientifically proven and deeply impactful, practicing gratitude isn't just polite—it’s a powerful tonic for your health. When you cultivate thankfulness, you unlock a cascade of positive effects on both your mind and body. Research shows that expressing gratitude can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, and even alleviate symptoms of depression. This emotional harmony directly influences your physical health by boosting immune function and promoting better sleep patterns. But the benefits don't stop there. Gratitude ignites a positive feedback loop in your brain, releasing "feelgood" neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication.

Capture the magic of the season with a braided crown that adds a touch of whimsical romance to your holiday ensemble. This ethereal hairstyle works wonders for both long and medium-length hair. Begin by parting your hair down the center, then create two braids— one on each side of your head. Cross the braids over the top of your head and secure them with bobby pins, forming a crown-like effect. Loosen the braids slightly to achieve a soft and dreamy look that pairs beautifully with any holiday outfit. Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication. Perfect for a glamorous holiday gala, these waves are achieved by using a curling iron to create soft curls that flow away from your face. Brush out the curls gently to achieve the iconic Hollywood wave pattern. To ensure your waves stay in place all night, use a strong-hold hairspray and consider adding a decorative hairpin for an added touch of sparkle. Inject some festive fun into your holiday look with a glitter ponytail that’s perfect for more casual gatherings. Start by styling your hair into a high or mid-height ponytail and securing it with an elastic. Then, take a fine brush and apply hair gel or hairspray along the length of the ponytail. Gently sprinkle glitter onto the product, ensuring an even distribution. This playful and eye-catching style is sure to make you the life of the party.

For those who appreciate a minimalist and modern look, the sleek bob is a sophisticated choice. This style is characterized by its clean lines and sharp angles, making it perfect for both formal and semi-formal holiday events. Whether you have a short bob or long bob (lob), ensure your hair is straight and sleek. Use a straightening iron and finishing serum to achieve a polished appearance that exudes confidence and chic charm. If you’re aiming for a hairstyle that strikes the perfect balance between elegance and casual charm, the half-up half-down twists are an ideal choice. Simply take sections of hair from both sides of your head and twist them toward the back, securing them together with bobby pins. Leave the rest of your hair flowing freely for an effortlessly beautiful look that’s perfect for holiday brunches or daytime gatherings. For an enchanting and regal appearance, the crown braid bun reigns supreme. This hairstyle seamlessly combines a crown braid with a low bun to create a look that’s fit for a queen. Start by creating a Dutch braid along your hairline, encircling the top of your head like a crown. Gather the remaining hair into a low bun at the nape of your neck. This intricate yet stunning style will have you feeling like royalty at any holiday event. Put a holiday twist on the classic fishtail braid by incorporating festive elements like ribbon or tinsel. This versatile braid can be styled into a side-swept fishtail or a centered one, depending on your preference. To add a touch of holiday flair, intertwine a strand of ribbon or tinsel with the sections of your braid. The result is a captivating hairstyle that captures the spirit of the season. The holiday season is a wonderful time to experiment with hairstyles that reflect the joy and merriment of the festivities. From classic elegance to modern chic, there’s a hairdo for every occasion. Whether you’re attending a formal gala or a cozy gathering with loved ones, these hairstyles are sure to make you shine brighter than the holiday lights. So, go ahead and embrace the spirit of the season by adorning yourself with these glamorous and enchanting hairdos.

STAY

The Marriott Anchorage Downtown is a perfect base hotel for your time visiting Alaska’s capital city. The location is so convenient, and guests can walk to the Alaska Railroad Depot or the bus station. It is also easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Enjoy city and mountain views from the hotel. The hotel underwent a complete renovation with vibrant colors that really brighten things up during winter’s extremely short daylight hours. This full-service hotel has a lovely indoor pool and fitness center. If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, then the Chena Hot Springs Resort is the place to stay. It is a scenic 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks to the very end of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Lodging ranges from dry cabins (no running water and outdoor restrooms) to nice hotel rooms. On-site is a pool house with access to the outdoor hot springs and an Ice Museum constructed of ice. Pro Tip: Book a shuttle through the Chena Hot Springs Resort, and it will pick you up from the train station. MARRIOTT ANCHORAGE DOWNTOWN Marriott.com CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT ChenaHotSprings.com

Order Humpy’s Famous Halibut and Chips paired with a local brew and discover why they’re famous. Gwennie’s Old Alaska Restaurant has been around for more than 50 years. Visit for a hearty breakfast and the interesting décor that is like walking into a time capsule. Downtown Anchorage is very walkable, and you can access quite a few attractions right from the Marriott Anchorage Downtown. A must see is the Alaska Museum, an eclectic place with both art, culture and history. Allow plenty of time to tour this gem of a museum. Alaskans get outside in the winter and visitors should too. Visit the Downtown Bicycle Rental and take out a fat tire bicycle on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Access the trail not far from the shop and bike 11 miles on Anchorage’s most popular trail. On a clear day you may even see Mount Denali. Interpretive signs along the trail highlight the natural and human history of the area. There is so much to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort during the winter. A must do is the Aurora Viewing Tour. It is a 30-minute drive from the resort to Charlie Dome. Hang out in a Mongolian yurt until the Northern Lights appear. Warm clothing is available if you don’t have your own. The Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse tour is fascinating. Guests can also enjoy quintessential Alaskan activities such as dog sledding or ice fishing. The Activities Center is the hub at the resort for booking tours and activities. COMMUNITY AND PHILANTHROPY Owners of 113 Main bring people together while supporting local causes By Jillian Chandler

O

ur Sandpoint community has gotten to know Justin and Shaunavee Dick over the years for various reasons, including their longstanding and beloved restaurant Trinity at City Beach, along with their many philanthropic endeavors. They have been immersed in their local community since moving to Sandpoint in 2006 after falling in love with their area, its people, and the opportunity to start their family “in the most beautiful small town on the planet.” Housed in the Best Western, Trinity at City Beach was in need of a new home, as there were plans to tear the building down and rebuild in 2021. The Dicks were able to purchase the space at 113 Main Street, with plans to relocate the restaurant there when the time came. But that time never came. Instead of being torn down, the Best Western was sold, and Trinity at City Beach was able to stay in its beautiful waterfront location. But what to do with their 113 space? During the weekend of Lost in the ‘50s that same year, Justin and Shaunavee opened 113 Main as a full-service bar, as they were only able to afford purchasing the bar equipment and a few large renovations at that time. They ran it as a bar until January of 2022, when they were finally able to offer a limited menu after purchasing the kitchen equipment.

8888 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

Today, the restaurant has become a favorite among diners. Echoing the vibes of the old Café Trinity that once sat on First Street, 113 offers an open space with approximately 23 tables and a large bar counter with 15 bar stools. “The layout makes it easy to identify and say hello to friends, families and neighbors without ever leaving your table,” Justin smiles. Open 3 to 9pm Tuesday through Saturday for happy hour and dinner, the cuisine exudes modern scratch American. Everything is made in-house from the pasta and gnocchi down to the beef, vegetable and chicken stocks. Fresh, in-season vegetables and proteins allow diners to enjoy a menu that changes with the season and the opportunity to try new dishes. A staple on the first couple of menus they’ve put out is the Citrus Pesto Gnocchi with Chilean Sea Bass; house-made gnocchi with fresh, skin on, wild-caught Chilean sea bass with an orange citrus pesto sauce. In addition to the beautiful menu is the full-service bar, where 113’s bartenders have created some amazing handcrafted cocktails with fresh fruits, house-made simple syrups, fresh squeezed juices, and various garnishes from candied blood oranges to edible flowers. When it comes to what Justin enjoys most about not owning one but

now two restaurants here in Sandpoint, he says, “I love the work. It’s my Zen time, but it’s also incredibly challenging. The rewards vary from watching the progression of my staff to spending time with so many in the community, being able to participate in a number of different nonprofits through the restaurants and watching my children work alongside me. I think some of the most rewarding days are when we work as a team and create unforgettable experiences for our customers, both local and our visiting guests.” Sandpoint’s restaurant scene is truly unique, and Justin shares that he loves the camaraderie of the local scene. “Most of the owners can all be found working side by side their staff and available to the customers. Additionally, we all participate and give greatly to our local nonprofits and causes that are near and dear to us.” It’s time to dine and imbibe at 113 Main.

And with the holiday season upon us, if you’re looking for a space to host your special party or event, 113 Main has held several successful private parties, from birthday parties and baby showers to holiday gatherings and several nonprofit events. Justin invites you to stop in to see their availability. november/december 2023 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL 89

For the topping: 1 cup sour cream 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Method • Preheat your oven to 325°F. • In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan to create an even crust. You can use the back of a spoon to press it down firmly. • In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth using an electric mixer. Add the sugar and vanilla extract, and continue beating until the mixture is well combined and creamy. • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, add the pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Mix until everything is fully incorporated and the batter is smooth. • Pour the filling over the crust in the springform pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is slightly jiggly. • While the cheesecake is baking, prepare the topping by mixing together the sour cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a small bowl. • Once the cheesecake is done baking, remove it from the oven and carefully spread the sour cream topping evenly over the surface. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes to set the topping. • Remove the cheesecake from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the cheesecake to fully set. • Before serving, carefully remove the sides of the springform pan. Slice the pumpkin cheesecake and enjoy the delightful flavors of the holiday season! 92 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023 92

Empowering the Entire Community Community Resource EnVision Center new host of the Festival of Trees November 30 & December 2 by JILLIAN CHANDLER

2

023 marks the inaugural year that Community Resource EnVision Center (CREC) will be hosting the beloved Festival of Trees; the tradition passed on to the organization by the Kinderhaven Foundation. Katie Begalke, CREC’s newly appointed executive director, shares that they are looking forward to having a public platform that allows the EnVision Center to live its mission of empowering the entire community. “We want all of Bonner and Boundary counties to know that we exist to help their neighbor, employee, colleague or friend when they are facing a time of need by connecting, serving and supporting them with resources, collaboration and partnership—so that all may thrive.” The Festival of Trees kicks off 4 to 7pm November 30 with its Friends & Family Night, a free event for the entire community. Guests will view the beautifully decorated trees, have pictures taken with Santa, enjoy cookies and cocoa, and vote on their favorite gingerbread creation. “We are excited to be creating a new tradition this year. Fourthgrade classrooms across the school district will be given $50 to execute the design and construction of a gingerbread creation. Guests will vote on their favorite, and that creation will be auctioned off the night of the gala,” Katie shares. “We believe that by including children in the Festival of Trees, we are planting seeds in those who will carry our community’s philanthropic spirit into the future.” The winning class will receive bragging rights, a pizza party, $200 cash for their classroom and 100 percent of the proceeds from the winning gingerbread creation to donate to the nonprofit of their choice!

December 2 is the big event, A Gilded Winter Wonderland, offering a chance for local folks to come together and learn about the needs in our community and respond while bidding on elaborate trees, enjoying a wonderful meal (catered by Ivano’s with drinks from Trinity at City Beach) and some holiday shopping at the Christmas Gift Shop. “Think more European Christmas Market than silent auction,” shares Katie. “We’d love for our gala guests to use the Christmas Gift Shop as a place to do their holiday shopping and check off items from their Christmas shopping list, all while supporting CREC’s work in the community.” She encourages community members to attend this “fun and festive evening filled with generosity that will leave guests with a glowing appreciation for their neighbors and for this extraordinary community!” Tables of eight, priced $1,500, are on sale now through November 6, at which time individual tickets will become available for $125 each. Outside of the 20 percent of each auctioned tree going to a nonprofit partner of the tree donor’s choice, the proceeds will be used to support the work of CREC. “When you support the Festival of Trees, your generosity empowers the entire community,” Katie reminds. Those interested in attending, becoming a tree or silent auction donor, sponsor or volunteer, can send an email to sandpointfestivaloftrees@gmail.com or visit the EnVision Center’s website at CRECidaho.com/festival-of-trees.
