Picnics in the park, a day out on the water, hiking the local trails, shopping the local farmers markets and attending much-loved community events … the summer months are meant for making memories.

for our youth, while us parents still find ourselves trying to juggle our careers and spend more time with our families. Too bad there’s no summer break for the adults— and for those who do have time off in the summer to enjoy what’s most important, you are blessed. See the summer through the eyes of a child, and make the time to explore and get dirty. Splash in the water. Take a nap. Eat watermelon. Build a sandcastle or mud pie. Get messy. Ignore the laundry and the dishes. Skip making the beds. Family is forever. Make this summer one where family comes first.

As the kids are out of school enjoying the freedom of no schedules, a break from sports and extracurriculars, this is an exciting time

Over the years, since the inception of Astroturf in 1965, man has struggled to come to grips with the ultimate question: Is the grass “greener” when it’s artificial? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of going with synthetic grass versus genuine grass to answer this question. Artificial grass was first used in Major League Baseball in the Houston Astrodome in 1966, replacing the grass field used when the stadium first opened a year earlier. Artificial grass stands up to heavy use, thus the reason it’s used on many sports fields. It requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered and partially covered stadiums may require artificial grass or turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. As for the pros of installing artificial grass for your front and backyard spaces, most people use artificial grass because it requires little to no maintenance. It also requires no irrigation, trimming or gaspowered lawn equipment, and with growing concerns about water conservation and healthrelated issues surrounding fertilizers and pesticides, artificial grass is increasingly becoming the first choice for homeowners. Dog owners can rejoice that synthetic turf is great at preventing even the most persistent puppies from digging, while being exceptionally stain and fade resistant. Not only does it stand up to pet abuse, but your lawn edges can stay crisp and look sharp over the years. Synthetic grasses come in different varieties of colors, lengths, densities and finishes, improving the aesthetics of your home while simultaneously upping your home’s curb appeal. Another key advantage of artificial turf is the longevity and durability of modern synthetic grasses. Until recent years, the warranty offered on most turf products only covered a few years. However, with the recent developments in the artificial grass industry, warranties for the longevity of some lawns can reach up to 25 years. 20

come to the artificial side With the longevity and reliability of artificial grass, this home-use lawn product can come with a high-priced barrier of entry. On average, a homeowner will spend between $6 to $12 per square foot, versus 40 cents per square foot for traditional sod. You will also need to add infill to ensure that individual grasses stay upright and do not get matted down. There are wide varieties of infills available including rubber, sand, Zeofill, Durafill, Envirofill and TCool Infill. The most widely used type of infill would be crumb rubber for most stadiums and sports arenas. Made from recycled tires, it provides good shock absorption qualities. The second most widely used infill is silica sand. Sand is the least expensive infill and tends to be cooler in direct sunlight while absorbing moisture and eliminating some odors naturally. Silica sand infill is easy to come by and spread, while like any day at the beach the silica sand can be jagged and painful to roll around on. It may also just hitch a ride to the bottom of your shoes and make its way into your home. Another popular infill that people use for their artificial turf is ZeoFill or ZeoLite Infill. This infill tends to be the least popular for its lightweight properties but most popular for eliminating pet waste smells. Zeolite is also very porous, which helps keep your turf cooler in direct sunlight when compared to most rubber and sand infill options. Regardless of which one you go with, they all have their pros and cons. If you have pets 22

or children, you will most likely want to get an infill that keeps your grass cool, orderly and odorless to help keep your artificial lawn pristine. While you may be conserving resources like water with an artificial lawn, synthetic grass will heat up exponentially in direct exposure to sunlight. While artificial grass is non-flammable, you don’t want it to be extremely hot to the touch. One solution to the problem is to use an infill designed to cool off your grass and make sure that it’s fine to walk on with your bare feet. Some infills (like the TCool Infill) are also designed with technology that captures water from

rainfall, dew, or irrigation and stores it for later use. As the sun’s radiation heats the turf, an infill can help release moisture, keeping the surface cool for up to four days from a single moisture event. While infill is a great way to keep your lawn looking its best, it needs to be replaced a few times throughout the life of the turf. The most infill can cost between $8 to $12 per bag, and one bag typically covers about 30 square feet. Replacing your infill can be done yourself, or you can use a service from a professional installer if time is more of an issue than money. When considering the cost versus time and convenience of an artificial lawn, it can be a great investment that will outlast a traditional (organic) lawn. The amount of time it takes to take care of the soil, plant seed, or install a traditional lawn will be saved. Though the initial cost of installation may be higher than anything else you’ll find on the market, the pros of low maintenance and longevity of your lawn make the pros of purchasing an artificial turf lawn far outweigh the negatives of purchasing and installing your lawn. With the onset of new and improved technologies, including processes to increase the clarity and vibrance of one’s artificial lawn, the grass might just be greener on the artificial side. Of course, you are free to make that judgment for yourself.

making old new again Seeing the beauty in antique pieces by RACHEL KELLY

J

ust because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s done. If anything, it means that it’s stood the test of time. As styles have gone in and out, there are some pieces that stand out as being classic. It could be the lines of the piece that never go out of style, or its lasting practical use. Perhaps it’s that the object seems to carry with it a memory, a story. Maybe that table used to center in your grandmother’s kitchen, bearing the responsibility of feeding 20 farmhands for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe that jewelry box once held your mother’s wedding ring. Perhaps that hat stand was bought for your great grandfather by his childhood friend. Maybe those boots were made for walking, and there’s still plenty of journey left in them. Whatever the reason, whatever the story, here are six ways to give a new look to your favorite old pieces.

C h a n g e Yo u r P e r s p e c t i v e . Sometimes the best way to bring life to old things is to change what holds it. Whether this means giving those vintage pictures a new frame, placing an antique piece on a floating shelf, or placing it in an unconventional location. A great example would be plates hung on the wall or door handles used as hooks. There are lots of ways to keep unused pieces that are no longer needed for everyday use.

Change Its Purpose. The jug that used to carry water from the outdoor well just might make a great umbrella stand. The container that used to carry snuff might be great for pills. The door that used to hang in your family’s 100-year-old shed might be great as a backdrop for hooks that you can hang your bags from. The large picture frame might look great as a headboard, or the ladder might double as a blanket holder.

A S p l a s h o f C o l o r. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your old pieces. An old milking stool or basket can provide that much-needed pop of color in an otherwise earth tone (or white) home. Bright colors such as sun yellow, teal, fire engine red, aqua … whatever you like best. Everybody needs something that when they look at it, they can’t help but smile. Sometimes a little color is all you need.

G i v e I t a Wa s h . This is not meant to be a literal wash, although a clean slate is always best to work with. With old things comes a lot of wood color, which can mean a lot of different shades of wood in one place. Dipping a damp rag in white paint, and then rubbing the white along the surface of your old antique can preserve a classic look while allowing it to be more neutral.

Strip It Down. Some pieces really do need to retain their wood color to preserve their authenticity. However, as previously noted, a whole bunch of wood colors in one space may not be preferable. Stripping your old pieces down to their bare wood, and then re-staining them in matching stain brings much-needed congruence to a place filled with old pieces from different eras. If it’s got to be wood color, it might as well match.

Re-fit and Polish. There are some things that are simply not made the way they used to be. Like those big wing-backed wooden upholstered sofa chairs, or hundred-yearold chandeliers. There are some things that are right just the way they are, however, they may not be quite perfect as they are. In such a case, the best thing to do is to reupholster or shine to perfection. Some things just have good bones but need a little shine to highlight their original glory.

Nonprofit Celebrates

20 Years

Panhandle Alliance for Education continues its mission to serve students and teachers by JILLIAN CHANDLER

“W

e have countless stories of students who have been impacted by a grant or a program funded by PAFE. and have gone on to pursue their dreams with either successful careers in the trades or in universities and then on to professions of their choosing,” affirms Amy Longanecker, executive director for Panhandle Alliance for Education. With a mission to promote excellence in education and broad-based support for the Lake Pend Oreille School District, Panhandle Alliance for Education is proud to be celebrating 20 years. Founded in 2002 by Bill Berg and Mindy Cameron, PAFE has been instrumental in education, creating educational opportunities for students and teachers that would not have existed without its inception. The inspiration began when Bill and Mindy came to Sandpoint back in the late ‘80s. They recognized that schools lacked needed resources and graduation rates were low. Having previously been involved in an education foundation in Seattle, they were called to start something similar here in Sandpoint that would benefit the schools and the students. Thus, Panhandle Alliance for Education was born. “A quality school district (as well as affordable housing) is a must if we want to attract families and employees for our local businesses and health-care institutions,” says Mindy. “I’ve always been interested in education and believe public schools are the cornerstone of democracy, where children in a community go to school together regardless of socioeconomic status. Our goal with PAFE is to get the community and businesses engaged and care about schools.” One of PAFE’s first supporters was Georgia Simmons, former president and CMO of Coldwater Creek. A key

player in hosting PAFE’s first fundraiser, she engaged the community for support, as she understood firsthand the importance of having a strong school district in order to attract high-quality candidates to Sandpoint. “A thriving community relies on a high-performing school district, and education funding from our federal, state and local levels can only do so much,” shares Amy. “We have been told time and again that PAFE extends that funding by giving teachers and school leadership resources and tools they wouldn’t otherwise have.” So how does PAFE promote excellence in education? This is executed through three key channels: Strategic initiatives: Each year, these initiatives are chosen in collaboration with school district leadership— and with the criteria that they have a long-term impact

on students and district-wide execution with measurable outcomes. In 2021, these included professional learning communities for teachers, musical instruments for sixthgraders in the district to experience playing, and career connections videos for high school students. Early childhood literacy programs: Reading programs that support children from birth through first grade, these programs include Born to Read, READY! For Kindergarten and Learning with Lucky. Teacher grants: These grants allow teachers to expand learning in their classrooms with innovative programs (838 teacher grants, totaling more than $2 million, have been awarded since its inception). PAFE is proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish these past 20 years, acknowledging the importance of SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

collaborating with local businesses, the school district and supporters. And the accomplishments speak for themselves: • PAFE is looked at by Idaho Business for Education, a group of nearly 250 business leaders across the state of Idaho, as an example of what can be achieved when local citizens and businesses work closely with school leaders. • With the help of many PAFE science grants through the years, Southside Elementary became the home to Idaho’s first STEAM SmartLab and is one of six schools in the state to be STEM Designated Schools. • Sandpoint High School’s post-secondary guidance counselor was hired in 2008 as a result of a PAFE Teacher Grant. SHS was one of few schools in the state to offer these services to students. The district saw immense value and began funding the position. The impact of this role has had ripple effects in the 14 years since. PAFE always welcomes and encourages the community’s support and involvement to continue, and further, their mission. To find out more about Panhandle Alliance for Education, and to make a donation, visit PanhandleAlliance.org. Be sure to subscribe to their quarterly newsletter and/or sign up for PAFE’s READY! For Kindergarten classes. For the past two decades, Panhandle Alliance for Education has been changing the lives of students right here in Sandpoint, and helping to create a brighter future. And with continued support of our local community, they will be able to continue their mission for many years to come. As Amy states, “Our work will never be done because our students will always need support.” SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

his year the honor of Teacher of the Year 2021-2022 has been bestowed upon Title 1 teacher Sherry Mitchell of Sagle Elementary School. Current reading teacher and previous fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher, Mitchell has a 32-year history of teaching (minus an eight-year hiatus she took while raising her children). “I originally majored in wildlife biology,” Sherry said, “but later changed my major to education after conducting nature walks for elementary students through the Audubon Society in Maine, where I started my teaching career.” With an extensive career in teaching a plethora of subjects, Sherry said that she most enjoys the relationships that she has built with her students. She enjoys the process of making those connections and then starting over again. “I also challenge myself by trying to learn the names of every student in the school,” she said. “So, when I see them in the hallway, I can greet them.” Sherry has no one experience that has made her teaching career memorable, but a multitude of experiences. In her current position, she can work with the same students

year after year, which enables her to keep up with them to ensure that they keep going strong in their learning. “It is so rewarding to see them grow,” Sherry added. “Every child and the school year is unique, and that is what makes teaching so interesting.” During Sherry’s historic career, she has learned many unique and interesting facts about her students and teachers, but one fact may surprise you. “Something that might surprise parents or the general public about the teaching profession is that teachers think of their students as ‘their kids,’” she said. “And we learn as much from them as they do from us. To teach is to learn.” While teaching is Sherry’s passion, in her free time, she likes to go camping, especially near the ocean. She is also an avid bird watcher and thrift shopper. And while learning from the ocean to the birds, if there’s one life lesson that she could pass on to her students, Sherry said, “It’s perseverance.” “Learning to read is hard work, and becoming a fluent reader takes time,” she added. “I love celebrating with students as they see their progress along the way. If you have perseverance, you can make it through life’s challenges.”

helped lead the baseball team to back-toback IEL Championships, back-to-back state tournament appearances, and helped lead the team to its first state tournament wins in 15 years, while performing other duties as team captain for both sports his senior year.

He has not only been a starting player at the varsity level since his freshman year, but he has also earned multiple All-League honors,

“To me, that is one of my best accomplishments,” Ethan said. “Being a team captain has allowed me to mentor the underclassmen and help them grow, which allows me to grow as well.” With a passion for wildlife that was instilled in him at an early age, and a special love for baseball, Ethan has decided to pursue both as he says goodbye to Sandpoint High School and hello to post-secondary education. “My main career interest is wildlife management,” he said. “I want to be able to help preserve and enhance the forests and bodies of water, so they are around for future generations.” Whether it’s his love for wildlife or sports, Ethan’s passion for both speaks volumes. Even when he suffered a torn labrum during his sophomore year and was sidelined for the entirety of that season from both baseball and basketball, Butler didn’t give up. He did everything he could to get back into the game.

“I have worked hard to rehab my shoulder and come back to where I was before the injury,” he said. “After this season of playing baseball, it feels healthy and I am able to compete.”

push themselves to improve each day. There are no shortcuts in sports, and if you want to be the best you can be, it takes time, a lot of hard work and perseverance.”

Hard work is something that Ethan is accustomed to. Whether working hard on recovery from injury or working hard to accomplish his goals, some of his biggest lessons have come from the sports he loves.

“He is a leader, a competitor, and an outstanding teammate,” said Head Coach Chase Tigert. “He has left his footprint on the SHS baseball program, and his contributions are going to be felt for years to come. I’m so proud of him and everything he has accomplished throughout his high school career—both in the classroom and on the field.”

“Everything you want is on the other side of hard work,” he said. “In all sports, there is a big commitment of time from the player and their family in order to excel and for the athlete to

nlike most of us, Tori Pelkey has spent most of her life playing volleyball (since the third grade). And although Pelkey just completed her senior year at Sandpoint High School, her journey has just begun. In the fall of 2022, Pelkey has plans to continue her education at Spokane Falls Community College (SPCC) while simultaneously continuing her volleyball career as a studentathlete for the college. “My goal for my future career is to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology and someday become a therapist!” Tori said. “I want to help people. I want to be the type of person that people feel comfortable sharing their feelings with, so I can help them with what they’re going through.”

her coaches and teammates, she has grown into a leader. “When Tori started playing for me, she was so shy and quiet but ended up being our kill leader and captain!” said Sandpoint High School Coach Karen Alsager. “She made First Team All-Conference this year as well. Tori is going to play locally for SPCC, and she will do extremely well there. I couldn’t be prouder of this young lady and the woman she has become. We cannot replace her and will miss her terribly on the court.”

Although Tori expressed her excitement about joining the Sandpoint High School Volleyball team during her sophomore year, she confessed that she did a lot of growing during the last three years. “One of the biggest challenges I faced in my sport was confidence,” she said. “Having confidence in myself and knowing how to create an impact with my skills was a hard struggle that I had to work through. E

ach year as summer kicks into full swing and the busy tourist season returns to Sandpoint, locals and visitors alike anticipate one of Sandpoint’s favorite annual traditions: The Festival at Sandpoint. Celebrating its 39th annual season this year, the Festival has long been a beloved local event that unites local and regional audiences in an intimate outdoor setting in small-town Sandpoint. “The Festival is unique in the sense that as a nonprofit we bring large acts to a small town in North Idaho, which is rare for a rural area. We can accomplish this with immense support from our community. There is a sense of pride and ownership in The Festival at Sandpoint and its community,” says Executive Director Ali Baranski. Traditionally, The Festival hosts eight different concerts during its roughly week-long period, but this year the team is hosting 10 different concerts from July 28 to August 7, and the lineup promises to impress. Headliners include The Beach Boys, KALEO, Lindsey Stirling, Gregory Alan Isakov and Pink Martini, with a host of other impressive artists. “It has been so exciting to see our community’s excitement for the high-

caliber acts we have lined up for this season. This season’s lineup is like no other, and we can’t wait for Festival season!” adds Baranski. The Festival returned last year after a brief hiatus during the COVID pandemic, and was a big success with a record number of ticket sales— which The Festival is on track to beat this year, she adds. “Last year came with some trial and error, however, we received immense support from our staff, board of directors, donors, volunteers and community that allowed us to have the time and resources we needed to get The Festival back on its feet,” explains Baranski, who served her first season as executive director in 2021. Since last season, The Festival has added two full-time hires and five summer interns, allowing them to frontload a lot of the planning, giving them more time to fine-tune the systems that make for a smooth and enjoyable Festival season. Paul Gunter has joined the team as the full-time production and education manager, making venue planning easier and also creating new educational programs to share with the community, like the Pre-K

Outreach Program that takes Paul to various local preschools to teach music. “We feel lucky to be able to give back to the area with free education programs, economic impact, and access to incredible concert experiences,” says Baranski. Food and drink vendors will be returning to Festival Street in the fenced-in portion of Lakeview Park, just like last year, and they will be offering both in-person debit and credit card ordering and mobile orders through the Noble app. However, to give everyone a bit more space, the bar will be moving to the lakeside concessions building this year. This year The Festival welcomes Adia Burton as the new Festival Street chairperson, responsible for coordinating all of the food booths. Throwing such an impressive event takes a lot of work from both employees and volunteers, and The Festival is always looking for volunteers for everything from bartending and checking tickets to selling merchandise and more. “Locals should consider volunteering and give back to the community in a fun environment and while enjoying a concert!” encourages Baranski. A volunteer application is available on the website for interested volunteers. Overall this year, concert venues have seen a record number of sales as concertgoers are eager to get out and return to doing the things they love, and The Festival at Sandpoint is no different. Tickets are selling fast—particularly for some of the most popular performances, so make sure to book your tickets early. The Festival recommends buying tickets directly from the website (they use ETix as their ticketing platform), as many ticket resellers online are selling shows for higher than market value. ome of the oldest people in the world, with the highest quality of life, live in the Mediterranean. This could be in large part to their active lifestyle; the people of Greece and Italy walk and bike everywhere as well as spend a lot of time outdoors. This could be because of their deep connection to family; the people of the Mediterranean are interconnected to their family and friends and often live with several generations under one roof. It is also true that culturally, the people within the Mediterranean stick to rhythms that encourage them to connect to their greater community. However, their rich lifestyle of lifelong health is believed to be mostly attributed to their diet. The Mediterranean is known for its cultural roots that encourage high-quality foods, eating within season, eating locally according to what’s available, gardening, and responsibly caring for the animals and animal products that they consume. The Mediterranean diet is modeled after this way of living and encourages a healthy dietary pattern that is sustainable as a lifestyle. This means that diets such as the Mediterranean diet are more a way of life, versus a strict standard that forces weight loss; weight that once lost returns once you return to daily living. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet can lower chances for cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, and it can have a positive impact on mental health. If we are to assume that the people of the Mediterranean live a long life in part because of their diet, there is also the added benefit of living long. The goal of such a diet is not to look perfect but to live within the weight that is healthy for your body type. To help you to feel good, versus craft a body that is “presentable.” The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. In light of that, what is the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is pretty straight forward, crafted around local Mediterranean cuisine. It emphasizes fruits,

eating within season vegetables, beans and legumes; things like peas, lentils, all different types of dried beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens. It includes low or nonfat dairy products, fish, poultry, non-tropical vegetable oils and nuts. So, palm oil and coconut oil are out, while peanut oil, avocado oil and olive oil are acceptable. Olive oil is especially encouraged as a source of healthy fats. Freshly pressed, olive oil is considered to be more of a condiment than an oil and has a variety of uses in all types of cuisine. As expected, this diet limits sugary foods, highly processed foods, and foods high in sodium. Lightly processed foods, such as quality cheeses, are allowed. Foods that have a (relatively) ample amount of salt aren’t prohibited in any way, just foods that contain high levels of sodium. Foods that are high in sodium are generally preserved and highly processed; sodium becomes easier to avoid as long as highly processed foods are limited. The reason that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to work so well is because it mimics the natural flow of what our bodies derive from nature and suggests ingredients that have been proven to encourage 62

healthy habits for generations. It is for this reason that there are other diets that also work in much the same way that the Mediterranean diet does. Diets such as the DASH diet are also considered to be healthy for lifelong use. DASH, or the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, is a diet that allows for more dairy and meat and doesn’t restrict healthy fats to ingestion of olive oil. True to its name, the DASH diet helps lower blood pressure by focusing on foods that are high in potassium, calcium and magnesium. This means that under the DASH diet one can eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, lentils, dairy and lean meats all in balance and moderation. Diets such as Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30 are surprisingly not on this list. Not because they don’t yield results! The Keto Diet can be great for someone who is suffering from diabetes, and the Whole 30 diet can be great for helping someone overcome bad habitual eating. However, these diets are not considered heart healthy, nor are they approved for lifetime adherence. In any diet, the focus should always be on quality over

quantity. Foods high in nutrition are the primary focus, versus foods that satisfy quickly but ultimately go unused by the body. That being said, our bodies need all kinds of foods, versus strict restrictions, to get the variety of nutrients that it needs for overall health. For instance, breads and pastas are widely eaten in sustainable diets because carbohydrates are good for quick bursts of energy. Carbohydrates are balanced in moderation by fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, as are part of a meal. Eating well isn’t so much about focusing on eating one thing and not eating another, but eating everything all together. For instance, pasta is usually eaten with pasta sauce, which usually incorporates a variety of vegetables with a moderate amount of meat. Taken all together, a healthy diet focuses on the whole plate. In turn, from head to toe, the whole body is well fed.

The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

ith 40 percent of the population expected to suffer from sciatica during their lifetime, it’s important to know what it is and what to do … when sciatica strikes. If you are affected by sciatica, you will already know how debilitating the pain and discomfort can be and how unexpectedly it can arrive, whether you’re sitting, standing, moving— even when you’re sleeping! Top Three Causes Why Your Back Pain is Screaming for Help! 1. Herniated Disc. A herniated disc refers to a problem with one or more of the rubbery cushions (discs) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that make up your spine. This may result in pain, numbness or weakness in your arm or leg. Pain may be described as tingling, numbness, burning sensation down the leg. 2. Arthritis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Stenosis. This is the narrowing of the open spaces within your spine to your arms and legs. Symptoms of spinal stenosis may include pain with long periods of standing and walking, and pain that comes on with standing and walking and relief is brought on from sitting.

3. SI Joint/Pelvic Dysfunction. This is the inflammation of one or both of your sacroiliac joints—situated where your lower spine and pelvis connect. Sacroiliitis can cause pain in your buttocks or lower back and can extend down one or both legs. Prolonged standing or stair climbing can worsen the pain. How to Stop Your Back from Screaming! A Few Remedies for Sciatica Pain: 1. The Revolutionary 830 Cold Laser. Cutting-

edge technologies such as cold laser therapy, electrical stimulation and electromagnetic pulse eliminate pain, speed up healing and depolarize painful nerves. Furthermore, influencing pain modulators (stress, anxiety and sleep) gives successful pain relief with no pain medication. 2. Multifunctional Movement Therapy. This therapy stops pain, increases strength, confidence and agility through specialized movements proven to rapidly resolve sciatica pain and other issues. 3. Dry Needling Therapy. Dry Needling is a very effective form of manual therapy that uses very thin needles inserted in your muscle tissue. Many conditions that were traditionally hard to treat including sciatica pain are now treated successfully by Dry Needling. All of these natural healing options, including cutting-edge technology, are provided in one package at Kauai Therapy & Wellness - Ponderay. Adventure Outside for Your Health and Happiness The summer months give us a reason to get outside, no matter the time of day. As the sun makes its presence known early in the morning and well into the evening, take that as an invitation to take in all that sunshine, fresh air, and all the outdoors that surround you have to offer. A run before work, a walk to your neighborhood restaurant or coffee shop during your lunch break, an after-dinner walk with family; these are the simple ways during a busy work week to unwind, refresh, and squeeze in a little exercise. Come the weekend, plan a hike on your favorite trail; dust off your bicycle and join a riding group; take a swim in your favorite outdoor community pool, river, lake or ocean; or hit the water for some kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding. If you have an entire weekend to escape the everyday, a camping trip to a nearby campground will keep you outdoors and active all day long. There’s plenty of time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors this summer. No excuses. So, what are you waiting for? Start small and think big!

nother summer equals endless adventures on that summer in Sandpoint to-do list. Hiking, biking, swimming, boating, camping, rock-climbing, outdoor gatherings, and enjoying the spectacular views. Being mindful of our surroundings and taking extra steps of caution can reduce the risks of an unexpected injury.

Where to Go?

“Some of the most common preventable injuries we see in the Emergency Department are head injuries, ranging from minor injury to major trauma, from a bicycle, motorcycle or ATV/UTV accidents. So wearing a helmet could make a big difference,” said BGH Emergency Department Nurse Rob McGregor.

You will want to go to the Emergency Department to treat: • Difficulty breathing • Any symptoms of stroke: face drooping, slurred speech, arm weakness, sudden vision trouble, or sudden trouble understanding simple statements. • A major burn • Persistent chest pain that radiates to your arm and may also include sweating, vomiting or shortness of breath • Severe head injury • Coughing or vomiting blood • Severe pain in your chest or upper abdominal pain, or pressure • If you are more than 20 weeks along, pregnancy complications include contractions/labor with bleeding, leaking fluid or decreased fetal movement.

“My best advice for preventing injury, in addition to wearing a helmet, is to be aware of your surroundings when participating in activities; quickly scan the area for any major hazards that could be avoided. Also, wear proper footwear. We see a lot of injuries from trip and fall due to very poor footwear. Even in the heat of summer, wear sandals with straps rather than flip-flops. Lastly, drink less alcohol and more water during activities. Dehydration can lead to weakness and falls.” Additional Summer Safety Tips: • Water Safety: Drowning is the number one cause of death in children 1 to 4 years old. Wear a life jacket, swim with a buddy, supervise children around the water and limit your distractions. All swimmers should remember to follow the rules at the pool or beach, and always check the weather before swimming or boating. • Buckle Up: “Motor vehicle crashes are the highest mechanism of traumatic injury we see at our ED in the summer months,” according to Marian Martin, Emergency Department manager. So whether it’s a road trip or driving around town, ensure all occupants of your vehicle are wearing a seat belt properly, including those in car seats. • SPF: Protect your skin with sunscreen daily, often reapplying when outdoors. Protective clothing, hats and sunglasses will also help prevent sunburn. • First Aid: Bringing a first aid kit on your outdoor adventures can reduce the risk of infection and the severity of an injury. If you are inexperienced, try an introductory first aid course. • Pedestrian/Bike Safety: Use sidewalks and crosswalks where available, map out your destination and take the safest route, wait for pedestrian signals at traffic lights, and use hand signals and bike lights when necessary.

In the event of injury or illness, knowing where to go can make all the difference. The Emergency Department is the right choice if you or a family member is experiencing a life-threatening illness or injury.

Children should be brought to the Emergency Department if they are experiencing: • Head injury • Significant bone or soft-tissue injuries • High, persistent fever (38.5°C or 100.4°F) • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea • Considerable lack of fluid intake (especially in a younger child) • Substantial changes in the child’s activity level If an injury is not life-threatening, an Immediate Care Clinic visit may be appropriate. Immediate Care Clinics can treat: • Cuts, bruises and minor lacerations • Earache, sore throat and fever • Minor burns and skin infections • Sprains, strains and simple fractures • Upper respiratory infections, bronchitis and sinusitis Have fun and stay safe! New limits expand 401(k), IRA opportunities

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Ken Wood

Before looking at what’s changed this year, let’s review the key benefits of these accounts: • Traditional IRA - You typically contribute pretax (deductible) dollars to a traditional IRA, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. • Roth IRA - You invest after-tax dollars in a Roth IRA, so your contributions won’t lower your taxable income, but your earnings can grow tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you’re 59 ½ or older when you begin taking withdrawals. • 401(k) - A 401(k) or similar plan (such as a 457(b) for state and local government employees or a 403(b) for employees of public schools or nonprofit groups) is generally funded with pretax dollars and provides tax-deferred earnings. Some employers offer a Roth 401(k), in which employees contribute after-tax dollars and can take taxfree withdrawals if they meet the same age and length-of-ownership requirements as the Roth IRA. So, what’s different about these plans in 2022? First, consider the traditional IRA. If you— and your spouse, if you’re married—don’t have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can always deduct the full amount of your contribution on your tax return, no matter what you earn. But if one or both of you are covered by an employersponsored plan, then your deductions could be reduced or eliminated based on your income.

Bank-issued, FDIC-i

Single taxpayers can claim the full deduction if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is $68,000 or less ($109,000 for married filing jointly), with deductibility decreasing at higher income levels and phasing out entirely at $78,000 ($129,000 for married filing jointly). But here’s the key point: Compared to 2021, these ranges are $2,000 higher for single filers and $4,000 higher for those who are married and filing jointly—which means that this year, you might have more opportunities to make deductible contributions.

TOP THREE NON-INVASIVE Aesthetic Treatments

Yo u d o n ’ t h a v e t o h a v e c o s m e t i c s u r g e r y t o age gracefully

A

s the world of aesthetic medicine continues to grow, the demand for non-invasive procedures rises. In the early 1990s, cosmetic surgery was all the rage among celebrities and noncelebrities alike, but women and men are looking for more affordable treatments that deliver quick results with less downtime and recovery. The new trend is to make small changes in troubled areas to slow down the signs of aging while still looking like yourself— just refreshed. The International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine have determined the top three non-invasive aesthetic treatments that have the biggest impact on an individual’s self-confidence and esteem, and below we break them down. Botulinum (Botox®). It is no wonder that Botox® came in at number one. This treatment takes just a few minutes, is painless, and temporarily inhibits muscle contraction in the areas it is placed, resulting in a softer appearance between the eyebrows, forehead, and around the eyes. Years of muscle-use in our faces—from smiling, squinting, stressing— create what begin as fine lines and deepen over time. Botox® can heal the dermal cracking or can be used preventatively to help deter their deepening.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). PRP can be used to treat acne scarring, hair loss and facial rejuvenation by utilizing the natural growth factors in your blood to promote new collagen growth and heal the signs of scarring and aging from within. The PRP is injected into specific areas to regenerate tissue, smooth and tighten skin, soften wrinkles, brighten your skin’s tone and enhance elasticity. It can specifically soften dark hollows around the eyes, plump drawn cheeks, soften lines and pores, and give your skin tone, tightness and texture a boost from within. Photofacials. Photofacials, also known as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, uses a broad spectrum of light to treat conditions related to sun-induced skin damage. The light therapy is absorbed by the melanin and oxyhemoglobin in the skin to reduce the appearance of sunspots (brown spots/ age spots) and small capillaries (spider veins) with minimal downtime or discomfort. The treatment takes less than 30 minutes and, in the few days following treatment, clients will begin to see the brown spots lift to the surface and exfoliate off, revealing a more even skin complexion. Talk with your aesthetic provider to determine if non-invasive aesthetic treatments can help you achieve your skin-care goals.

Ready to make your eyes (and eyebrows) pop this summer?

These highlighting facial features can make all the difference in enhancing your face shape and facial expressions. Wellplanned eye makeup can refresh your look instantly, and whether your makeup style is detailed or low-key, this summer’s trends are all about glowing up, starting with those eyes! Don’t overlook the eyebrows when it comes to accentuating those eyes. Through all the trends eyebrows have seen and endured over the years, one thing has been consistently clear: Paying attention to the eyebrows is important! Makeup artists often describe how eyebrows can change the entire look of the face. Eyebrows can reframe the shape of the face and allow you to express yourself without saying a word. Fortunately, there are more ways than ever before to enhance the look of your eyebrows, and many of this season’s most popular methods are nearly effortless. Draw the attention to your eyes this summer with the following tips and trends: Eyebrow Lamination. One of the most popular eyebrow trends of 2022, brow lamination is a non-invasive, semipermanent treatment designed to produce perfectly balanced, brushed-up brows that last for weeks or months. The treatment involves restructuring the brows using a product that helps straighten curled hairs, increase symmetry, and balance gaps in the brow hairs. The brows are set into 76

ultra-glam, adorned features are in a more desirable, brushed-up shape using a long-lasting fixing product, leaving a well-set final result: the appearance of fullerlooking brows. Ask your esthetician about eyebrow lamination. Full, Minimalist Brows. Embracing your natural brow this year? You’re already on trend! Celebrities, influencers and makeup artists alike are keeping their looks simple by embracing their eyebrows’ natural shape for a more relaxed appearance. The all-natural brow embraces length, fullness, longer tails, and fluffy, soft edges. No need for harsh tweezing or over-maintenance. Minimalist is in! Minimalist brows can still be bold—it’s all about embracing the fullness and personality of your natural brows. To accentuate your brows, use a tinted brow gel or pomade, starting with a light application. Work up to find the right amount for your desired look, using makeup brushes to balance the look and achieve your desired shape. Under-Eyeliner. The eyes can be accentuated with just a subtle change, like the placement of your eyeliner or the color you use.

The “reverse wing” trend has emerged for 2022, calling for lines placed under the eye in a bold, flattering look. Under-eyeliner tends to lift the outer corners of the eyes, helping the eyes appear a bit bigger and brighter. Smudged Eyeliner. Expressive “moody” makeup is in for 2022, and you can bring the look of a smoky eye into the summer with this season’s revived smudged eyeliner trend. All you’ll need is your everyday black eyeliner (for ease, opt for a pencil or crayon over liquid eyeliner) and a short eyeshadow brush. The unstructured, messy-chic look is easy to create—simply apply your eyeliner and use your brush to softly blur the lines right away. The best part? Leaning in to the unstructured, rule-free aspect of this look. Release the focus on flawlessness and embrace a little freedom with this trend. Make a Statement with Metallics and Eye Shadows. The summer’s eye makeup trends celebrate color pops with bright, summery tones, and all things glitter. From the runways to mainstream media, the eyes are making more of a statement than ever this year. It’s all about the eyes this season, and ultra-glam, adorned features are in, from metallic eye shadows to carefully placed gems and rhinestones. Adding a gem to the inner corners of the eyes has become a popular look—just use a drop of latex-free lash glue 78

w o l g y r e m m u s Lean into a . s e n o t d e ss i k and sunbefore carefully pressing on your gem of choice! If you want the glam without the accessories, start with a metallic glitter, or a bold, shimmering shade of eyeshadow, to incorporate the statement-making trend into your everyday eye-makeup routine.

Colorful eyeshadows in pastels and bright hues are in—choose your shade and place it on top of an eyeshadow primer to ensure a strong hold. Pair your bright eyes with neutral lip colors and a clear brow wax to keep the color pop in focus! Color Pops with Eyeliner. Not sure if you’re ready to step into the bright-colored eyeshadow trends this summer? If you want to try something new without going for a full-colored eyeshadow, a colored eyeliner applied along your lower lashes is the perfect compromise. It might feel like an adventurous step from your normal look (especially if that look is based in ultra-natural or neutral tones), but it’s a 80

subtle enough step out of your comfort zone that you just might love it! A swipe of color under your bottom lashes can quickly add impact and significantly brighten the eyes with little effort. Warm Blushes and Tanned Tones. Lean into a summery glow and sun-kissed tones with your makeup this season, including your eye makeup! An all-over facial glow is a definite summer look, and all it takes is some bronzer, lipstick in a warm, neutral shade, and a shimmering copper-toned eyeshadow to achieve the appearance of being sun-kissed throughout your face. With blushes back in style this season, use that to accentuate this trend. When you’re using blushes or bronzers to accentuate your facial shape (on the bridge of the nose and low on the cheeks), use the remaining product to brighten your eyelids for an allover brightening!

RIVE EISU CR

I was recently invited on a Press Trip to experience the Viking Egdir, one of the company’s newest longships launched earlier this year, on the Rhine Getaway itinerary. The eight-day cruise began in Basel, Switzerland, with stops in France, Germany and The Netherlands along the Rhine River. Each day brought exciting new discoveries as the ship passed charming villages plucked right from a storybook, vineyards crawling up hillsides, Gothic cathedrals, and even Dutch windmills. The highlight of the trip was the 40-mile stretch of the Rhine River between Koblenz and Bingen, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience. Pro Tip: Book your airfare through Viking and pay the extra $100 to $150 for Viking Air Plus, which allows you more options in selecting your flights and seats. With the current pilot shortage and frequent airline delays, you will have peace of mind as Viking provides a 24-hour hotline to use during your journey. The representatives work with the airlines and Viking to get you to your cruise. On my trip they even delayed our departure so a guest could make the cruise. INFORMATION VikingRiverCruises.com

I truly enjoyed the culinary experiences on board the Viking Egdir. You have the option of dining in the Restaurant, the main dining venue, or the Aquavit Terrace that offers both indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather. The same menu is offered at both locations. Each day there are classics that are always available, specials of the day and at dinner a regional menu based on where the ship is. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chef accents meals from the onboard herb garden. I lost count of how many croissants I ate. Make sure to read the Viking Daily each day. The four-page newsletter has a detailed section of culinary information about the food specialties for your next destination. Viking provides so many opportunities to experience local favorites. I was able to enjoy a slice of Black Forest Cake at a restaurant in the Black Forest region. In the evenings there are optional excursions to local restaurants, pubs or wineries. I took a culinary walking tour of Strasbourg, France, and had the opportunity to eat and drink from local vendors and restaurants across the city. Onboard the ship, some of the cultural enrichment events were culinary with a food demonstration and the opportunity to taste a local delicacy.

Y A ST

My accommodation on the Viking Egdir was their Veranda Stateroom. One of the things I like about Viking is the brand consistency. Each Viking Longship is the same, so you know what to expect. I recommend the Veranda Stateroom, as it gives you extra space with the private veranda. The views are spectacular with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, versus one that pulls open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your cabin if you like. A nice feature is all the 110/220-volt outlets and USB ports. The Scandinavian design is thoughtfully engineered with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed with luxury linens. River cruising provides a more intimate experience with only 190 guests and 50 crew. You won’t find the spas and multiple dining options that are on ocean cruise ships, but I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed spending time on the sun deck with its 360-degree views of the Rhine River and a beautiful organic herb garden. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, which serves as the main common area as well as tucked around the ship.

DO

Viking provides one complimentary shore excursion for every port of call except for departure day. On arrival day there was an opportunity to take a Welcome Walk with a local guide through Basel. Each day the included excursion is either a bus tour or a walking tour. I was very impressed with the quality of the tours and the guides. Most days you can take the included tour in the morning and an optional one in the afternoon or evening. Guest services and the program director were flexible and able to arrange seats for a sold-out pub crawl when more guests wanted to go. Take advantage of the fact your ship docks right next to town. I was able to walk right off the ship and into Cologne, Germany, and a few other towns to explore. In Koblenz, Germany, I was able to enjoy a currywurst at a local imbiss (fast food hut) right next to the ship before walking over to catch the gondola high up a hill to the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. This was truly a memorable trip.

Hydration is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and nothing quenches your thirst like a tall glass of water. Whether you prefer cold or room temperature, it’s up to you. But … sometimes water needs a little kick to make it a bit more exciting.

A CLEAN COMPLEXION What you put into your body directly affects your outward appearance. And there’s no exception when it comes to water. A hydrated body means hydrated skin, and the most noticeable is your face. Water intake plus a good diet and beauty regimen will ensure your face, and the rest of your skin, look their best.

grapefruit Consuming grapefruit not only is hydrating but increases energy levels, aids in skin rejuvenation, improves eyesight and metabolism, helps build stronger nails and better hair, and is beneficial in many additional ways.

HUNGER CONTROL Water is known to aid in weight control. Dehydration is all too common among Americans, often resulting in hunger pains when in fact the body is in need of water. Make it a habit to start your morning off with a fresh glass of water, making sure to drink several ounces every hour or so, and more an hour or two before a meal, to help curb your appetite.

orange Oranges are rich with water (a medium orange provides 4 ounces of water). They are high in vitamin C and supply nutrients such as potassium and folate; a great antioxidant and source of fiber, and helps in collagen production, boosts the immune system and aids in iron absorption.

BRAIN POWER The human brain relies on proper hydration in order to function optimally. Research shows that dehydration can affect one’s focus and impair short-term memory function and the recall of long-term memory. Our bodies are constantly losing water. So when you feel like your brain power is struggling, water should be your first go-to solution.

lime

Loaded with nutrients, limes are known to help boost immunity, aid in iron absorption and promote healthy skin, among others. This sour yet fresh fruit is a great addition to a variety of drinks, especially water.
