FINEST ORGANIZATION WITH A CAUSE

Better Together Animal Alliance

Better Together Animal Alliance (BTAA) has supported pets and families across Bonner, Boundary, and Kootenai Counties for over three decades. Formerly Panhandle Animal Shelter, BTAA has shifted from traditional shelter services to innovative programs designed to keep pets with their families. Since 2011, their offerings have expanded to include a pet food bank, lowcost spay/neuter services, and the Home To Home program, an online platform dedicated to rehoming and fostering pets in need— all focused on reducing the need for shelter stays.

BTAA’s impact is remarkable. Their Pets for Life program provides care to more than 600 pets in underserved communities annually. In 2023 alone, BTAA facilitated 1,160 adoptions, returned 318 lost pets, and distributed 95,000 pounds of pet food. They also responded to an abandonment case, rescuing 23 husky-like dogs and rehoming each one.

“We’re able to do this important work because of the support of our community,” says Mandy Evans, BTAA’s executive director. “All of our progress is due to our community partnering with us to improve animal welfare across our region.”

“Our Home To Home program, established in 2016, is being used internationally and assisted nearly 90,000 pets in 2023,” Mandy shares. “It is currently being used in more than 150 shelters across the US and Canada.”

BTAA offers diverse ways for people to help, from volunteering to fostering, and provides a judgment-free environment that aims to set a new national standard for animal welfare.

A New Smile in Town

Dr. Sarah Manross Joins Lewis and Hawn Dentistry

Bringing expertise and compassion to Sandpoint, Idaho

Dr. Sarah Manross has joined the Lewis and Hawn dental team in Sandpoint, bringing her expertise and commitment to patient care. Born and raised in a small town in South Carolina, she grew up in a dental office because her dad is a dentist.

Initially, Dr. Sarah didn’t envision following the same path, but after shadowing her dad and several other dentists during college, she discovered her calling. After visiting Sandpoint last year, she and her husband decided to make the move. They were drawn to the beautiful mountains, lake, and year-round outdoor activities. The welcoming community felt similar to the small town where they both grew up, making it the perfect new place for them to call home.

Excited to join forces with Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn, a duo with a wellestablished reputation in the Sandpoint area, Dr. Sarah looks forward to learning from them while contributing her expertise. “When I found out that Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn were looking for another

dentist, I was so excited because their reputation is exemplary. We share the same values when it comes to practicing dentistry. Treating patients like family is important to me,” she shares.

Dr. Sarah’s approach to dentistry focuses on ensuring her patients feel at ease. She explains, “It has been rewarding to give my patients a gentle and comfortable dental visit, which changes the entire dental experience for them moving forward.” Aware of the anxiety some patients may feel, she is committed to making their visits positive and stress-free.

Regarding new techniques, Dr. Sarah plans to build on the practices Dr. Hawn and Dr. Lewis established, particularly focusing on treating TMJ issues, obstructive sleep apnea, sleep-disordered breathing, and tongue ties—areas where Dr. Hawn has specialized. She is enthusiastic about learning how these treatments can transform patients’ lives,

saying, “Before coming to this practice, I didn’t realize how much we can transform someone’s health, energy, and well-being by improving how they breathe.”

Dr. Hawn shared his thoughts on Dr. Sarah joining the team: “We feel incredibly fortunate to have found Dr. Sarah. As a close-knit team dedicated to providing exceptional care, we’ve been selective in adding new members. Dr. Sarah meets our high standards and exceeds them in every way. Her skills, warmth, and compassion shine through, and it’s clear how deeply she cares for our patients. We are truly blessed to have her on our team!”

Her passion for patient care extends beyond technical skills. Dr. Sarah believes in educating her patients and encouraging them to participate in their oral health and overall wellness. She strives to ensure patients understand their treatments and feel empowered during their visits.

Dr. Sarah has already embraced the Sandpoint community and looks

forward to making meaningful connections as a resident and a dentist. “I quickly learned that Sandpoint is the type of place where everyone seems to know each other! There seems to be a plentiful supply of kindness and a real sense of togetherness here,” she says. She is eager to contribute by finding ways to get involved, give back, and serve others.

Her commitment to continuing the legacy of excellence at Lewis and Hawn is clear. As Dr. Lewis stated, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Sarah join our dental practice! We have looked very diligently for someone with excellent clinical skills who treats our patients with dignity and respect. Dr. Sarah strives to make our patient’s dental experience exceptional. Her impressive focus and attention to detail make her the perfect addition to our team.”

Dr. Sarah is excited to meet and connect with patients, ensuring they receive the highest quality of care in a warm and welcoming environment.

Shop local

Make every gift count this season—and all year long—by investing in the community

With the holiday season around the corner, it’s tempting to take advantage of the quick click of online shopping or the predictability of big-box retailers. But this year, consider making each gift count on a deeper level by shopping local. Beyond the holiday rush, keeping our purchases close to home helps build a robust, connected community that enriches Sandpoint year-round. From unique boutiques to essential services, Sandpoint’s local businesses make it possible to give gifts that go beyond the ordinary, while also supporting the people who call this area home.

choosing to shop locally keeps money circulating within our community

Choosing to shop locally keeps money circulating within our community, supporting jobs and helping small businesses grow and give back. Every purchase at Sandpoint’s local businesses, like Finan McDonald on First Avenue, helps keep our economy strong, supporting the livelihoods of our neighbors. And at a store that’s as much a Sandpoint staple as Finan McDonald, you’ll find items with character and quality—a refreshing alternative to the generic products you might see elsewhere. Each shopping experience there is another opportunity to connect with our community and support a business that has proudly served Sandpoint for years.

Shopping local also brings a touch of magic to the holiday season, but it doesn’t have to end there. Imagine giving the gift of a movie night at Sandpoint Cinemas, an experience that can turn any evening into a memory. You’re not just buying a ticket; you’re contributing to a local theater that keeps the joys of the big screen alive right here in town. It’s an easy way to remind friends and family that they’re part of something special, something local. With each ticket sold, Sandpoint Cinemas can continue offering entertainment that’s close to home, bringing people together throughout the year.

Our local businesses add a special touch to giftgiving

Our local businesses add a special touch to gift-giving. A gift certificate or beauty product from Refined Aesthetics on Cedar Street, for example, offers something thoughtful and memorable. Refined Aesthetics goes beyond skincare to offer complete personal care and relaxation. Treating a loved one to a refreshing treatment or quality skincare product from a local shop shows you care about them and helps keep Sandpoint’s businesses thriving.

Shopping locally is more than just a trend; it’s a powerful way to keep our town vibrant and connected. When you choose a Sandpoint-based business like C&M Cleaning Service, you’re supporting a local business that both provides a valuable service, and is a valuable part of the community. C&M Cleaning Service offers the care and attention to detail that larger companies can’t always provide. When you hire them, you’re not only getting a cleaner space—you’re fostering a business that contributes to the daily fabric of our community, one home and business at a time.

The impact of shopping local extends beyond the holiday season. It’s about making mindful choices all year long while building lasting relationships with business owners and fellow shoppers alike. When you frequently shop at familiar spots like Finan McDonald, you become part of a cycle that sustains our community in ways that go beyond commerce. You’re forming connections with people who share your town, who understand its character and spirit.

Shopping locally also fuels creativity and variety. Many small businesses in Sandpoint bring a distinct personality that adds to our town’s unique charm. Take the local favorites at Refined Aesthetics—their services are tailored to our community’s tastes and needs, offering specialized care and beauty treatments that feel as genuine as they are luxurious. By supporting local shops and services, you’re helping to highlight what makes Sandpoint unique.

This holiday season, and throughout the year, let’s keep Sandpoint

thriving by making shopping local a joyful habit. It’s easy to fall into routines of convenience, but when you shop locally, you’re gifting something much more valuable—a stronger, more connected Sandpoint for everyone. So, whether it’s a cozy sweater from Finan McDonald, a movie night at Sandpoint Cinemas, a rejuvenating skincare product from Refined Aesthetics, or a cleaning service from C&M Cleaning Service, every dollar spent in our community is a direct investment in our town and its people. Let’s make a conscious effort to support these businesses and continue building a Sandpoint we’re proud to call home.

Why do we need Family Medicine?

Comprehensive care for every stage of life

Family medicine, primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics…. We hear about all these medical specialty designations but often are unsure what they mean or what services they provide.

Primary care provides most of the healthcare people need over their lifetime and serves as the entry point into the healthcare system. It is the first, and often the only stop required to address most health needs. Primary care should serve as the focal point of the system, with all health information flowing back into primary care from hospitalizations and specialty offices, so the primary care provider can help you, the patient, determine the best course of action for your health. Think of a primary care provider as the quarterback, someone who sees the whole field and is best positioned to call the play.

Family medicine physicians, internal medicine physicians, and general pediatric physicians, along with their teams, provide most of the primary care. In contrast to other parts of the healthcare system, primary care providers will see a patient with just symptoms but no diagnosis. They will investigate and treat those symptoms without reference to a specific organ type or disease process. For example, if a patient comes to the clinic with upper belly pain, a primary care physician will consider if the pain comes from the heart, the stomach or the muscles, and will work to investigate and treat any of these possibilities. Second, primary care teams manage ongoing care needs alongside their patients, including chronic disease management and preventative care, they help patients know when important services

like labs, imaging or vaccinations should be performed. Primary care is person-centered rather than disease-centered. It is continuous, comprehensive, and accessible. You never need a referral to see your primary care physician or provider, and their care is focused on all of you, not just your heart, kidneys, or ankle.

Family medicine is distinctive within primary care. Family medicine physicians provide care for all ages and life stages, from birth through death. As a family physician, I have delivered a baby, helped a patient manage their diabetes in mid-life, and held the hand of another patient in hospice care, all in one day. Physicians who have chosen to specialize in family medicine have undergone specific training to provide this type of continuous and comprehensive medical care. In addition, family physicians and providers are often physically situated in the communities they serve. They know their patients, their families, and their community, allowing them to best organize “the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources, leading to better health, better care, and lower costs” (AAFP, 1977). Family medicine physicians have a window into the structural and social drivers of health and well-being that influence an individual’s ability to access, afford, and engage in care and wellness. This allows them to be their patients’ most effective healthcare advocates and helps determine what the right care is in the right place at the right time.

Dr. Reinke practices full-spectrum medicine, caring for newborns to those at the end of life. She has special interests in public health, women’s health, pediatrics, and preventive care.

Winter Decorating Tips

Follow these easy decorating tips to help your home feel warm, welcoming and extra cozy this winter.

1

2

Layering with textures: When it gets cold outside, create an inviting haven by adding soft textures everywhere. Put plush blankets and chunky knit throws over your couches and chairs. Layering rugs in living areas adds warmth underfoot and also helps to create an inviting atmosphere.

Use nature: Bring the outside in. Use seasonal decorations like pinecones and evergreen branches to create a wintery feel. Rustic wood is a popular natural element to incorporate into your home and is a great way to refresh your look using natural materials during winter.

3

Warm lighting: Change all the bright lighting in your home to warmer hues. Use candles, string lights, and soft lamps to create a warm glow during the long winter nights. Try lanterns or candles from nature shops in seasonal scents such as cinnamon or pine.

Winterize Your Home: Stay Warm and Protected

Check your emergency kit to ensure its winter readiness.

Cutting spending can help boost retirement savings FINANCIAL FOCUS®

Like most of us, you may someday want to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Your ability to achieve this goal will depend on how much you save — but it also matters how much you spend.

And saving and spending are certainly related: The more you can reduce your spending, the more money you could have available to save for retirement through your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Over many years, even relatively small amounts diverted from spending to saving and investing could add up substantially.

How can you go about potentially reducing your spending? Here are a few suggestions:

• Use a budgeting tool. If you’re not already doing so, you might want to consider using a free online budgeting tool. Among other capabilities, these apps can place your spending in categories — groceries, travel, entertainment, and so on — which can reveal redundancies that, once eliminated, could save you money. For example, you might find that you’re spending a not-insignificant amount on streaming services you rarely use. Or you might be surprised at how often you go the grocery store, rather than consolidating your visits and reducing the likelihood of “impulse” purchases.

• Take advantage of employee benefits. If you work for a mid-size or large company, you may have an extensive employee benefit plan, which could include discounts on some products and services. Also, if you are enrolled in a high-deductible health plan through your employer, you might have access to a health

savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), either of which may let you lower your out-of-pocket health care costs by using pre-tax dollars to pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and some other qualified expenses.

• Shop around for insurance. To some extent, we are all creatures of habit, which can be good in some circumstances and not so good in others. In the “not so good” category, many people stick with their auto, homeowners and life insurance policies year after year, even though they might be able to save some money by switching to another company. But even if you stay with your current company, you might find ways to save money by taking steps such as adding a home security system. Check with your insurer to learn more.

• Compare credit cards. There’s a piece of financial advice that essentially says: “Pay cash for everything” — and this isn’t a bad idea. Ideally, you might want to use a credit card strictly for items such as car rentals or hotel reservations, and you should pay off the bill each month to avoid interest charges. Sometimes, though, you may need to use your card for other purposes, and it may not always be possible to pay your bill in full. That’s why you’ll want to review credit cards periodically to find one with lower interest rates, a favorable balance transfer offer and a better rewards program.

It’s not always easy to cut down on your spending, but when you do, it can provide more peace of mind — and an opportunity to boost your savings for what could be a long and active retirement.

HealthBeauty &

Foods, supplements, and hydration for glowing skin and hair

Healthy skin and lustrous hair don’t happen at the surface. Although skincare routines and scalp products are designed to enhance your exterior, your natural beauty begins on the inside, fueled by proper nourishment. Nourishing your natural beauty starts with learning about the best foods for healthy skin and hair, beauty-boosting supplements, and how hydration can boost your healthy hair and skin. Because it’s true that you are what you eat, fueling your body with the right foods makes sense – especially when it comes to supporting your beauty efforts. Hydrating and choosing the right supplements provide plenty of beauty benefits, supporting your glowing skin and lustrous hair. Below is a breakdown of how to nourish your beauty from within for radiant skin and lustrous hair.

Foods

The food you eat plays an important role in supporting your beauty efforts. Nutritious, beauty-boosting foods provide the vitamins and minerals that skin and hair need to thrive. Below is a guide to a few of our favorites.

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for hair and skin. They also fight inflammation, which can contribute to acne. Omega-3 fatty acids support collagen, structural protein that keeps skin strong and firm. It thickens hair shafts to reduce frizz and enhance shine.

Avocado is a beauty-boosting food that is rich in healthy fats. It also contains vitamin C and antioxidants that support supple skin and sustainable shine. Vitamin C is essential to collagen formation, too, as are the healthy fats from avocado that keep hair silky and shiny.

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, provide a powerful punch of nourishment that includes biotin, vitamin E, and zinc. All of these nutrients support skin and hair health. Biotin is known as a beauty vitamin because it supports hair growth and prevents breakage. Zinc is essential to skin repair and supports a healthy scalp, too.

Supplements

In addition to the beauty-boosting range of foods for skin and hair, the right supplements can support your beauty efforts, too, as they fill in dietary gaps and provide nourishment to support your beauty regime. Collagen is a popular supplement for skin and hair, and deservedly so. It’s an important body compound and the most abundant protein in the skin, which is why it supports a glowing appearance. As we age, collagen production declines, contributing to wrinkles and sagging skin. A collagen supplement can help to boost skin hydration and elasticity while strengthening hair to reduce the risk of breakage.

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is another beauty-boosting supplement often promoted as a hair supplement, but it also helps promote healthy skin. Biotin bolsters hair growth, reduces the risk of hair thinning, and contributes to a natural shine. It has also been found to benefit the skin, as it supports the turnover of cells by helping the body metabolize fats and carbohydrates. The process of recycling skin cells can support a smooth, supple appearance and more glowing skin.

Smooth Skin by Summer

Why the colder months are the best time of year to start your laser hair removal journey

Bri Williams, WHNP-BC Refined Aesthetics Med Spa, pllc SandpointMedSpa.com 215 Cedar St., Sandpoint

Are you considering laser hair removal? The colder months are an ideal time to begin treatment.

• With cooler temperatures, the skin is often covered, reducing sun exposure and minimizing the risk of hyperpigmentation, which can occur if laser hair removal is performed on tanned skin. Additionally, it is easy to protect the skin after treatment, allowing for better results and fewer complications.

• Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments per area, so starting the process in the fall and winter months ensures ample time to complete treatment and be hair-free by summer.

• The holiday season provides a perfect opportunity to pamper oneself and enjoy the confidence of smooth skin for upcoming events and gatherings.

Do you have questions about laser hair removal or want to know if you are a good candidate for treatment? Schedule a consultation with your aesthetic provider to discuss your options!

Hyaluronic acid is another popular beauty supplement widely used to help skin and hair. Similar to biotin, it helps retain moisture in the skin to support supple skin and a glowing appearance. It’s also been shown to support hair strength and shine, likely by moisturizing the scalp.

Omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy fats found in highly-regarded organic fatty fish, is often recommended as a supplement for those who aren’t likely to get enough from their food. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce the appearance of acne or red, inflamed skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help strengthen the hair and reduce the risk of hair breakage while supporting a natural texture.

Hydration

Water is crucial to supporting beauty from the inside out, as it helps to clear toxins from cells and keeps skin supple while reducing the risk of hair brittleness. Drink up — adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day to properly hydrate the skin and hair. Adequate water intake helps to reduce the appearance of dryness and even wrinkles by keeping the cells hydrated. Staying hydrated helps keep the hair supple by reducing frizz and flattening split ends.

Drinking tea can contribute to your daily hydration efforts, including antioxidant-rich green tea, or powerful, caffeine-free options like herbal tea or chamomile. Both types of tea offer antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids that support strong, supple skin and reduced wrinkles. Teas are helpful in part because they contain antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids that help support supple skin and reduce wrinkles. Chamomile is also soothing and can calm inflamed skin.

Water-rich foods can also offer a hydration boost and a punch of vitamins and minerals that support skin and hair health. Cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges are high-water-content foods that can help boost hydration. To make the most out of your beauty-boosting efforts, do your best to balance one cup of caffeinated, alcoholic, or other dehydrating beverages with extra water or hydrating foods to counteract their dehydrating effects on the skin and hair.

While skincare routines and hair treatments can enhance your appearance, true beauty starts from the inside, with healthy foods and habits that help you nourish your body from within. You can achieve radiant, glowing skin and strong, healthy hair by fueling your body with the right foods, supplements, and hydration. Embrace the power of nourishing your body from within, and let your natural beauty shine.
