If you’re like me, summertime is a time to play and be outside. In turn, my house gets neglected and we forget our usual school-time routines. We get home, dump the wet towels and laundry on the tile, fix dinner and get ready for the next day. If I’m up to it, I’ll throw a load of laundry in the washer and hope to remember to turn it on after we’ve showered and before we crawl into bed. Then, when the alarm goes off in the morning, we’re up and out the door again.

I don’t want us to live in a pigsty, but I also don’t want to miss out on something because we stayed home to clean and do yard work. If we have guests coming, I make sure the beds have clean sheets, the bathrooms are clean, and that we have drinks in the fridge.

I have written in the past about how to maintain your house with a busy family life by doing small things each day. These are things like doing the dishes while you cook, doing a daily load of laundry, and cleaning a little bit each day to prevent too much build-up. It all boils down to time management.

I’m the first to admit that I am a total nerd. In an effort to save time, I have created a spreadsheet with a list of my family’s favorite recipes. There are columns associated with each recipe that list the cooking times and the necessary grocery store and Costco ingredients. Each month, we pick out a total of 20 to 25 recipes. Then, we take the spreadsheet, which already has the grocery

list, and we conquer it. My husband gets the grocery store items, and I get the Costco items.

When we get home, each recipe has a number associated with it, so we put all the ingredients for recipe #3 together in the pantry, label all the refrigerated ingredients for #3 so they don’t get eaten before we have a chance to make it and so on. Given this system, we’ve got our grocery shopping and labeling for the entire month down to less than two hours. Then, whomever gets home from work first, looks at the list of recipes, picks what they want, and gets dinner started. (Having a garden with consistently fresh vegetables helps during the summertime so produce doesn’t go bad. Also freezing some for the winter months helps with the budget).

Our monthly grocery budget is $500. At the beginning of the month, we get $500 cash and that’s our grocery money. I know, I already told you I am a total nerd! But this helps save my sanity. I hate the “what sounds good for dinner” dilemma, so we just eliminated it. If the kids complain about a recipe, they get to pick the menu for the following month.

When I am done with work for the day, I can do pretty much anything but swing by the grocery store to pick up dinner. This should give me more time to weed my garden or work on my house right? Maybe when school starts again, but right now, the lake is calling...

The pool, which measures 32 ft. long by 22 ft. wide, has a unique design with varying separate depth levels – 3.8 ft., 4.2 ft., 4.8 ft. and a 6.0 ft. deep water section. “This allows for having several people comfortably in the pool at the same time and participating in a wide variety of aquatic based exercises and activities including, walking, leg strengthening, arm strengthening, core stabilization and balance activities as well as completely un-weighted spine decompression exercises,” explained Rust, who has 20 years of aquatic therapy experience. “The pool is kept at 92 degrees and has both stairs with a railing and a hydraulic chairlift for entering and exiting the pool. Private changing rooms and a shower are added features of our facility.”

Rust has taught aquatic therapy to students at North Idaho College’s physical therapy assistant program. She first opened Cornerstone Physical Therapy in 2002 on South First Avenue. In 2011, Cornerstone moved to its current location at 1301 North Division, which is a 4,000 square foot facility that includes the pool, private treatment rooms and a gym.

A native of Sandpoint, Rust graduated from Creighton University in 1996 having achieved one of the nation’s first Doctorate of Physical Therapy degrees.

Prior to that she attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana where she earned her Bachelors in Health Science and played volleyball for Carroll. Adding to her credentials is her expertise as a certified Functional Capacity Examiner, an Orthotic Specialist and a certified Yoga instructor.

Having attended Sandpoint High School and being part of the state championship volleyball team in 1985-1986, Rust made

the decision to return to Sandpoint to raise her children who were also active in a variety of sports including softball, basketball, football, volleyball and ski racing.

In an effort to give back to the community she loves and impart her love of athletics to others, Rust coached club volleyball and ski racing for several years. She and her staff at Cornerstone Physical Therapy continue that tradition by supporting and volunteering for the Arthritis Foundation as well as Sandpoint area church activities.

In addition to Rust, her staff includes Jenny Jones, PT who has over 35 years of experience and Ryanne Lemon, PTA, a recent graduate who has many years of personal training and athletic coaching.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS. Kyle Perry Kyle Perry knows what it takes to succeed.

Going into his senior year, he has a 4.1 GPA, having always earned a spot on the honor roll, and he has earned nine varsity letters. A foursport athlete, Kyle plays football, basketball, baseball and runs track. And if you have ever watched him run the football, you have been entertained by his athleticism and agility. And it is something others have noticed too. Last year Kyle was awarded the Jim Veriwolf Best Back award, the Newcomer of the Year for 4A Inland Empire League (IEL), first team All-IEL and first team All State.

Kyle plans to play college football and would like to major in business, eventually owning his own business. “I would like the flexibility of owning my own business as I would also like to help coach one day,” said Kyle.

The biggest challenge Kyle has had to overcome is when he suffered concussions as a freshman and sophomore. They set him back mentally, but he said he was able to overcome that by doing neck strengthening exercises giving him more confidence on the field.

Kyle said he enjoys participating in sports in part due to the people he forms special bonds with while training and competing.

Rainey Woodward Junior Rainey Woodward has made her mark in the running community. She joined both cross country and track her freshman year and ended up finishing 8th overall at state in cross country that year and won the 800 for 4A in track at state that same year. Last year Rainey placed 18th overall in cross-country, but had to sit out track season due to a broken bone in her foot. She is also an honors student and said she strives to continue that throughout her final two years of high school.

Rainey would like to run cross-country and track in college for a division one school. “I’m currently looking for schools that will fit my career and athletic goals,” said Rainey, adding that she loves to cook and would eventually like to own a bakery or café. “I think college will be the perfect time to figure out exactly what will make me happy for the rest of my life,” said Rainey.

One aspect of running that Rainey enjoys is that it tests her limits in several ways. “I love that this is a sport where your mental strength has to be just as strong or stronger than your physical strength,” said Rainey.

Rainey credits her coaches Angie and Matt Brass with teaching her important life lessons.

“A positive mindset will make you a happier person and will help you enjoy even the hardest of tasks whether it be in school, work, or a sport.”
