THE PUMPKIN SPICE CRAZE IS HERE, so fall must be in the air. Those who love the holidays are starting to count down the days until Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those of us in the building industry are hoping that the people who want their remodels completed by those big holidays have planned ahead and are already in the process.

The days are getting shorter and the air is cooling off, so we’ll start spending more time inside. We’ll also be spending more time in our cars running kids around to various school activities, dropping them at practices, and then attending sporting events, which also may mean more traveling on the weekends. So … this may lead to leaving dirty dishes in the sink, the laundry piling up and the house not as clean as we’d like.

I’m not saying this is everyone, and what if it’s not you? Congratulations! You are either Superman or Wonder Woman, or you are missing out on other activities while you stay home to do those chores. (Or you’re retired with more time.)

However, I have decided this fall that I’m done being fussy about our house. Instead of staying home cleaning, I’m going to be out in the driveway in the evenings shooting hoops with the kids. I’ll be at their games and spend my weekends having more fun with my family. We’re organized, we’re decluttered, and although it’s not perfectly spotless, it’s good enough for us.

What’s working for us? I’ve written in the past about putting a load of laundry in the morning or doing a few loads during the week to eliminate the big pile on the weekend. How picking one room to clean throughout the week will help eliminate having to clean the

NO FUSS whole house at once. I’ve also written about how to minimize your clutter by eliminating things you don’t need. I’m a firm believer in these, especially the decluttering. Just let it go. By minimizing and getting rid of things we didn’t need, we also let go of the clutter in our house, which made it much easier to keep things picked up simply because we don’t have those things anymore to pick up!

We spent a little extra money on getting organized, allowing us to keep things out of the way, and providing freedom of more “space” in our home. If you do the same, instantly, it will feel cleaner and you won’t be a slave to the mess. It also makes it easier to wipe off those countertops because they won’t have anything lying around on them, the floor will be easy to vacuum or mop because you don’t have to move things first, and the clothes will be easy to put away because they have a specific spot they belong.

In the long run, you will save yourself some time, too, because instead of looking for things, you will know where they are, and when you’re done, you will know where to put them back where you found them. Win-win, right?

There’s always ways to fine-tune our houses (or households for that matter), but discovering that feeling of being content where you can actually sit back and really enjoy that cup of coffee in the morning or that glass of wine at the end of the day in your own house is pretty priceless.

GRACE HICKS: A JUNIOR at Sandpoint High School, Grace Hicks has been a starter on both the varsity volleyball and basketball teams since freshman year. She has received many awards including the Inland Empire League’s (IEL) Newcomer of the Year her freshman year for basketball and was named to the IEL all-league team for volleyball.

While Grace plays both sports, she said it is volleyball that she enjoys the most. Earlier this year she played on a club team, Kootenai Elite Volleyball Academy, which is a team combined of the top volleyball players in North Idaho and Spokane.

“We ended our season at a tournament in Florida, and AAU Nationals ranked us 33rd,” said Grace, who plans to play volleyball at the collegiate level, hopefully for a Division 1 school where she would like to major in business.

“I have always been really good with numbers and interacting with people,” said Grace. “I believe this will be the best area of work where I will always be on my toes.”

Her SHS coach, Erin Roos, has witnessed Grace’s dedication. “She’s a hard worker, talented athlete and natural leader,” said Roos.

There are many things Grace has learned from being involved in athletics, but she said the one lesson that stands out in her mind is that there truly is no “I” in team.

“You always are dependent on someone to boost you up when you are feeling down or need someone to listen and talk things through.

A member of Sandpoint High School’s crosscountry team, Cole placed third on the team his sophomore year and 39th overall. Last year as a junior he placed first on the team and 28th overall. You will want to stay tuned for this year, as we are part way into the season, and it is looking promising for both boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams.

“I love the team aspect of the sport,” said Cole. “I love how we all face the exact same courses, and we help each other through them.”

Cole shared that one of his continuing challenges as a runner is his form. “I am better than I was but still struggle in the form department,” he said. He credits his coach, Matt Brass, with working with him to improve. As is evidenced by his performance, Cole appears to have overcome that challenge!

He plans to attend the University of Idaho where he will study computer science with the goal of a career as a software engineer. “I am interested in this because of the type of math involved and the mode of thinking used,” Cole said.

He hopes to run at the UI as a walk-on for cross country and track, “but trying to walk on is always a risk in the sense of getting on the team,” Cole said.

One lesson he will take with him as he continues onto the next chapter in life is one he learned from both of his coaches, Matt and Angie Brass.

“Never settle for being less than what you could be.”
