Second, what you should expect along the way. Your lot needs to be cleared. This may mean cutting trees, leveling the ground and excavation for foundation.

The plumbing, electrical and HVAC are roughed in (wires and pipes run to locations where they are needed). Next is insulation. Drywall is hung, taped, textured and painted. Cabinets are installed and electrical is finalized. Tile can be installed in showers and floors during this time, too. Depending on the warranty on your flooring, it can either be installed before or after cabinets.

Once cabinets are set, the countertops can be templated, fabricated and installed. Plumbing will be finalized—toilets, sinks, faucets hooked up. If the flooring is already in, the base trim, window and door trim is installed. Base trim goes on prior to carpet, if that’s your flooring option.

Once window trim is on, you can measure for blinds or window coverings. Carpet will be installed, HVAC will be finished and final hookup to water main, sewer, septic, etc. will be completed.

Prior to moving in, there is usually a final walkthrough with your builder to go over how to operate certain things, mark what needs to be fixed or replaced and, once that’s completed, you can schedule move-in day!

During this whole process, you should be prepared to make a lot of decisions. Color and material selections will feel like a full-time job. You should also be patient. Understand that your builder cannot control things like Mother Nature and subs being held-up on other jobs. Things never go as fast as you want them to; be prepared for that. It’ll all be worth it in the end.

ince 2002, Kaniksu Health Services has been providing Bonner and Boundary counties high-quality comprehensive and affordable medical, pediatric, dental, behavioral health and veteran care—with more than 25,000 residents served.

“Our goal is to help our patients stay healthy or return to good health,” says Olivia Luther, director of community relations at Kaniksu Health Services. “Since our first family health center opened in 2002, Kaniksu Health Services has provided our patients with timely, affordable and quality care; because to us, they are not just people in a waiting room.

Community health centers are community based and governed by a local board that is represented by a minimum of 51 percent patient consumers, ensuring that health-center services are fit to their unique needs. Today, there are more than 1,200 health centers nationwide that provide cost-efficient care to more than 20 million individuals.

This past year, Kaniksu received the prestigious honor of earning level three—the highest level attainable—patient-centered medical home recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. This national program recognizes community health centers and primary care practices that demonstrate the highest levels of coordinated and effective patient care.

KIEHL HUTCHINGS A junior at Sandpoint High School, Kiehl Hutchings is thoroughly enjoying his first year in public school. He plays defensive tackle in football, his first year in the sport, and also plays attack in lacrosse, where he has already made his mark.

A big challenge for him has been getting used to organized sports. “My whole life I have done individual sports: skiing, dirt biking, snowmobiling and jet skiing,” said Kiehl. “I spent a lot of time researching techniques for my position and watching videos on YouTube by pros and college athletes explaining their various approaches.”

Looking ahead, Kiehl plans to attend college at either Utah or Boise State. “I would love to play either football or lacrosse [at the collegiate level],” he said.

His ultimate career goal is to own a salvage operation that retrieves wrecks from the ocean.

“That has fascinated me since I was a kid,” said Kiehl. “The idea of finding hidden treasure is really interesting to me.”

Kiehl appreciates the wisdom of both his football coach and his lacrosse coach—who also happens to be his dad.

“They have talked about how when you think

you’ve given all you’ve got, that you can still dig deeper and find more energy, more stamina to do better and go farther,” said Kiehl. “I think this will benefit me in the future because it has taught me to not give up.”

HEATHER WALLACE Heather Wallace is a sophomore at Sandpoint High School and is a devoted athlete who participates in several sports.

“I have been running cross country and track for six-and-a-half years,” said Heather, who is in her second year on varsity. This year she added a new sport, wrestling.

She said one of the biggest challenges she has had to overcome in sports is the mental aspect.

“Depending on the mental block, they can be hard to overcome,” Heather said. “But getting to the point where you are able to break through is the best feeling in the world.”

Heather plans to attend college after high school and currently has her sights set on becoming a teacher or an athletic coach. “I think that would be something I would enjoy,” Heather said. “I am also interested in studying psychology and sociology because those are subjects that I find really fascinating.”
