Real estate agents will tell you that buyers make their decision within a few seconds of pulling into the driveway of a potential home. If they don’t like what they see outside, they may not even opt to check out what’s inside. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” does not apply to homes!

It’s true—I look on Zillow every morning for new listings and potential houses. I can look at the first picture and scroll right past if it doesn’t have the right curb appeal. Everyone is different and looks for what’s important to them, but we can all agree on a few things that help with the outward appearance of a home.

this means painting the whole house, including all the trim, but once it’s done, stand back and look—it’s like a whole new house! This investment is one that pays off.

A few items rank high on the list of return on investment (ROI) for the exterior of your home. One idea is adding stone elements to the exterior of your home. This may mean replacing vinyl with manufactured or cultured stone or adding stone to the lower half of any bump-outs or cantilevered areas.

Another hot spot is the garage doors. Most of the time this is because the garage doors face the drive, and it’s what people see as they approach your home. The front door is also something that can make a great first impression. There are lots of options for these, and elements such as glass panels or textured finishes can add a lot, especially when paired with the stone accents and a new garage door! The average ROI for garage and entry doors is 91 percent, so you can splurge on these knowing that you will get most of your money back if you should choose to sell your home.

With spring right around the corner, now is the time to start planning those projects. You should also think about fixing up those outdoor entertainment spaces. Last summer I wrote an article on how to create fire pits, outdoor sitting areas and exterior entertainment spaces. Bringing elements of the indoors to the outside with these focal points provides a much larger entertainment space. It’s a space that’s open, roomy, full of fresh air and provides a setting where people tend to be more relaxed. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for summer to get here so I can be outside and be more relaxed.

Taking Fitness Outside

By Natalie Dreger I AM A HUGE FAN of being outside and burning calories at the same time. We live in such a gorgeous community, we can all take our fitness routines outside of the typical gym environment and still experience the same great benefits—if not greater results. Some people have referred to our community as God’s country, simply because we have everything that we could ever need or want right here. We have amazing fresh water lakes, rivers, mountains and fields just out our back door. Don’t you just love that? I do.

I often consult with clients who have never had, and have no desire to ever have, a typical gym membership. I will tell you the same thing I tell them; you don’t require a gym membership to improve your health or to experience an amazing physique transformation. It really wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t even have a gym to go to. People got plenty of exercise throughout the day outside doing things they enjoy doing with their friends, their children, their spouse or their dog.

PRESTON BUNTY: AS THE SENIOR CAPTAIN of the Sandpoint wrestling team, Preston Bunty has worked hard and it has definitely paid off. “I am a state qualifier and a junior Idaho team member,” said Preston who also maintains a 3.0 GPA. His post high school plan is to attend Boise State University where he will pursue a degree in business administration.

Preston shares that one of the biggest challenges he has had in his years of wrestling was starting out as what he said “one of the worst kids on the team.” But through hard work and dedication, he has improved and is now captain.

“The thing I enjoy about wrestling the most is that during a match, you are the only one out there. There is nobody to rely on to be successful except for yourself,” shared Preston.

When asked what one life lesson he has learned from sports, his answer is simple. “Chase your goals and never, ever give up.”

DANIKA TOMAZICH: A JUNIOR AT SANDPOINT High School, this is Danika’s third season on the Bulldog’s varsity girls’ team where she plays the position of guard.

It is a sport she thoroughly enjoys.

“The best part about basketball for me is gaining a strong connection with my teammates,” she said of the bond she shares with her fellow players.

With a 3.7 GPA, Danika works hard on and off the court. She is currently enrolled in the health occupations program which will allow her the opportunity to earn her CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) by the end of the school year.

“I have always wanted to pursue a job in the medical field, such as a physical therapist or traveling nurse, because I love helping people,” shared Danika.

While undecided as to what school she would like to attend, she said she will limit her athletics to intramural sports at the collegiate level.

One of the biggest challenges she has faced in basketball was when she was diagnosed with mononucleosis. “I was unable to play for a few months, which affected my ability to gain more experience,” said Danika. “I overcame that by attending as many practices as I could to absorb information without participating.”

While sports can teach one many things, Danika said it has taught her what it takes to succeed— hard work and determination.

“Success doesn’t come to you if you sit around and wait for it,” she said.
