Is the product made domestically (USA)? What kind of warranty does it carry? Does the company you are purchasing it from have good options for what you need? Do they have a good reputation?

Simple law of business … there’s a reason showrooms with experienced professionals and high-quality products are priced higher. It’s OK to loosen the budget a bit knowing that the purchases are not something we will regret later or that they are of low quality.

Positively supporting women in meeting their health goals

O

ne of the world’s largest chains of fitness centers for women, Curves International, Inc. offers more than 4,000 locations worldwide, recently celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Originally opened in Sandpoint at the Bonner Mall in 2001, Barbara and JP Carver took ownership of the business in August 2011, in its current Ponderay location.

Curves has been empowering women to take charge of their own health with a 30-minute total body workout that includes strength training and cardio to work every major muscle group, with the equipment specifically designed for women.

“The foundation of the Curves Circuit is a series of hydraulic strength training machines designed to work every major muscle group for the total body workout in just 30 minutes,” says Barbara. “A Curves Circuit Coach guides members as they focus strength and effort on the machines followed by intervals of cardio moves with functional bodyweight exercises, finishing with stretching and recovery.”

At Curves, they also offer specialty classes, balance, body basics (which focus on arms, core and legs), boxing (a higher intensity class) and cardio. To round out the program, Curves Complete is a fully integrated personalized weight-loss and weight-management solution that include the Curves fitness program, customizable meal plan and one-on-one coaching.

Throughout 2018, they will be offering 30-day challenges for their members to challenge themselves in their workouts with sit-ups/ crunches, push-ups, jumping jacks, planks and more. “Traditionally, we encourage members that their personal improvements are their only competition, but it is also fun to change it up a bit when they compete with their workout buddies, even as they each work on personal strength training!” Barbara says.

In addition to Curves’ hallmark 30-minute complete workout, Barbara says there is a sense of camaraderie among their members; many of whom have been with Curves since it first opened in the area 16 years ago.

articipating in high school sports requires one to be able to effectively balance academics and athletics while still finding time for family and friends. For Sandpoint High School junior Alex Stockton, that challenge is year round as he is a three-sport athlete participating in football, basketball and baseball.

Being involved in sports continuously throughout the year requires constant training, and when an injury comes your way it can be very challenging, as Alex discovered in eighth grade. “I tore my LCL [lateral collateral ligament] and cracked my tibia,” he said. “I overcame this challenge and was on varsity for all three sports my sophomore year.”

Alex has been instrumental in scoring for the Bulldog’s basketball team this season and shares that his passion for sports is in large part due to the brotherhood and friendships he has developed with all his teammates over the years. But there is one person who he treasures most. “I love playing alongside my brother and best friend, T.J. Davis,” said Alex.

He credits his football coach, George Yarno, with teaching him one of the most important lessons he has learned through sports: “Coach Yarno told me to always trust your first instinct because there was a reason you felt that way.”

enior Trinity Golder is a dedicated athlete and student who has already achieved great success on the basketball court. She was named to the 3A IML All-League team and the 4A IEL All-League team as well as the All-State team last year. When Trinity tore her ACL and lateral meniscus in May she had to undergo surgery, but she is grateful for the support she received from her family and friends. “My parents took such good care of me after surgery and have given me the resources to heal,” she said.
