design for the room itself, rather than the individual components. For example, in a guest room/office space, look for a desk that matches the bedroom furniture in that room; the space will look much less thrown together. It also helps to keep the space neat and orderly. At the very least, tidy up the desk before your guests arrive— it will help them feel much more at home.

For multi-purpose spaces that are used together daily, such as the dining room/library mentioned above, it helps to define each space within the room. Successful options include built-in cabinetry around the perimeter of the room, with the dining table taking center stage.

Another option is to use half of the room for dining and one half for books.

For those with hobbies, it can often feel like you don’t have enough space. And for this I say get

I have an easel set up on my covered back porch. I’ve found that in winter, I tend to focus on knitting projects anyway.

I love to sew, but we don’t have a dedicated sewing room. No problem! We use the dining room table for projects but keep the sewing machine in a cupboard near the dining room.

Open floor plans are very convenient— but it does make multi-tasking more of a necessity rather than an option.

Oftentimes, an entryway is actually part of the living room, leaving guests to walk right into the heart of your home. I like to create a dedicated space within a space by adding an entry table or console, mirror, and basket for keys or other necessities near the front door.

Furniture can also serve double duty. If your home is short on bedrooms but long on guests, think of adding a sleeper-sofa in your living room or office. Murphy beds are becoming popular again as well.

For any combination spaces, good storage is key. Finding a convenient place to store linens in your guest room/office for when you do have overnight guests or, like us, sewing storage in your dining room, can make all the difference in how convenient it is to switch back and forth between uses.

Again, the concept with multi-use spaces is creativity. Your home should be a place where you can do all the things you love to do. Don’t let your floorplan dictate how you use your rooms. Get creative with your ideas, your furniture and your storage!

hey are more than coaches. They are mentors and lifelong friends to the athletes they coach. Husbandand-wife team Matt and Angie Brass are entering their 14th year as head coaches of the cross-country program at Sandpoint High School, where they began in 2005 as volunteer assistants. In addition to that, they have been involved with SHS’s track-and-field program for 12 years with Matt serving as the head coach for the past four years.

If you ask any athlete they have coached, they will instantly tell you about the supportive and family like atmosphere that Matt and Angie have created. Just how do they accomplish this?

“This is a sport that takes a lot, not something you can fake your way through,” said Matt. “We ask a lot from our athletes, and our goal is to always match that commitment to each one of them. The diligent consistency of training and being active and being together has helped to build it to what it is today. It is truly a family of runners.”

They coach approximately 55 kids at a time, something they say can be a challenge to keep the younger, inexperienced runners engaged while still meeting the needs of the more experienced runners. Time is another challenge. Coaching for this couple is a year-round commitment, with two weeks off in November and two weeks off in May. country team while he was student teaching at Moscow Middle School in 1998. They both ran cross country and track all four years in high school, and Angie had a scholarship for cross country and track to Idaho State University.

Unfortunately, she was unable to compete due to an injury and transferred to the University of Idaho to complete her degree. The couple, who are high school sweethearts, married after their freshman year of college.

They both had impressive records at Sandpoint High School with Angie a state champion in the 3,200 and a seven-time state medalist in her four years. In cross country she placed seventh, third, second and second in her four years and held the 1,600, 3,200, 3-mile and 5k school record at the time.

Matt was a four-time state medalist in track and cross country combined, with a sixth place finish in state cross country and fifth in the 1,600 his senior year. He was the school record holder in the 800, 1,600, 3-mile, 5k and 2 relays when he graduated.

Both of their children, Saydee and Niah, participated in both track and cross country while attending SHS, carrying on the family tradition.

The couple says they both enjoy the opportunity to be part of each athlete’s life. “(We enjoy) building young adults, mentoring and getting to teach them and be a part of their lives, building a family, a unit of support and teaching about commitment, accountability, goals and challenging each person to be the best they can be in life and sports,” said Angie. “In a world ever more focused on self, teaching about the importance of caring about others’ wellbeing and results as much as your own is really important.”
