Should you consider 401(k) loans or withdrawals?

At some point, you may have more money in your 401(k) than in any other investment. And even though your 401(k) is intended for your retirement, you may one day think you have to tap into your account early— but should you? And if you do, how should you go about it?

* Annual Percentage Yield (APY) effective 12/18/18. CDs offered by Edward Jones are bank-issued and FDIC-insured up to $250,000 (principal and interest accrued but not yet paid) per depositor, per insured depository institution, for each account ownership category. Please visit www.fdic.gov or contact your financial advisor for additional information. Subject to availability and price change. CD values are subject to interest rate risk such that when interest rates rise, the prices of CDs can decrease. If CDs are sold prior to maturity, the investor can lose principal value. FDIC insurance does not cover losses in market value. Early withdrawal may not be permitted. Yields quoted are net of all commissions. CDs require the distribution of interest and do not allow interest to compound. CDs offered through Edward Jones are issued by banks and thrifts nationwide. All CDs sold by Edward Jones are registered with the Depository Trust Corp. (DTC).

If it’s possible to avoid taking money from your 401(k) before you retire, you probably should do so. You could spend 25 or more years in retirement, and you’ll need to pay for those years, so you may want to look for alternatives to your 401(k). If you’ve built an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses in cash or cash equivalents, you could use some of this money. If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you could use it to pay for qualified medical expenses. Or you could sell some of your taxable investments, rather than going into your tax-deferred 401(k).

But if you have determined that you must look at your 401(k) plan to meet a short-term funding need, you’ll want to carefully consider how to go about it. You typically have two main choices: loans or withdrawals.

For plans that allow loans, employees can generally borrow up to 50 percent of the vested amount of their 401(k)s, up to a maximum of $50,000 within a 12-month period. Administrative fees may apply, and interest will be charged, but it will be added back to the 401(k) account as part of the loan repayments. Except when they’re used for a home purchase, loans must be repaid within five years, with equal payments made at least quarterly, unless payments are allowed to be paused temporarily.

If you leave the company or don’t repay the loan according to the agreement, the loan balance will likely be treated as a taxable distribution. Now, let’s consider withdrawals. For 401(k) plans that allow current employees to make withdrawals, the withdrawal requests are usually considered either hardship or non-hardship. To qualify for a hardship withdrawal, you must demonstrate an immediate and heavy financial need to pay for certain expenses, including a home purchase, college, a medical issue or other specified costs, and your withdrawal is limited to the amount necessary to meet the need. Non-hardship withdrawals can typically be taken for any purpose but usually are not granted until you’re 59 ½ or older.

Unlike with a loan, a hardship withdrawal can’t be repaid, while a non-hardship withdrawal can usually only be repaid by rolling over the amount to an IRA within 60 days. But the bigger issue may be taxes. If you withdraw funds from your 401(k), any previously untaxed money is generally taxed as ordinary income and a 10 percent penalty will apply if you’re younger than 59½, unless you qualify for an exception. Plus, your 401(k) plan typically must withhold 20 percent of the withdrawal for taxes, so you’d have to take an even larger withdrawal to meet your needs.

Before embarking on a 401(k) loan or withdrawal, you may want to consult with a financial professional and your tax advisor. Taking money from your 401(k) is a big move, so make sure you know everything that’s involved.

Caleb Worley, owner of Worley Homes, grew up in the small town of Snohomish, Washington, which at the time was a farming town. “To give you an idea how small, when going to school or town, we’d occasionally be held up by farming tractors on the roads,” he smiles. Today, all the land has been developed and turned into “cookie cutter” homes by large developers—which Caleb is not fond of.

To Caleb, Snohomish is no longer home due to its dense population. He made the move to Sandpoint several years ago and is proud to now call this place his home.

Caleb hasn’t always been in the business of remodeling and building custom homes. His career started out in law, though he always loved working with his hands and previously worked construction with his father and two older brothers. He realized that it was time to pursue his true passion—that of building custom homes and remodeling old homes into works of art. In 2017, Worley Homes was founded; a family business Caleb established with his brothers Abram and Brandon. And it has remained a family owned and operated company since, serving Sandpoint, Priest River, Priest Lake and Dover Bay.

16
"
THE BETTER PART OF THE DEAL IS THAT I ALSO MET MY WIFE, HANNAH, ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO, IN PRIEST RIVER, AND SINCE THEN IT’S BEEN AN EASY DECISION TO STAY.

Q.After years honing your skills in the field of law, you decided to pursue a new career path and opened Worley Homes. What inspired this change?

A. Law was not for me. I chose that career path as that’s what people do— they go for the higher-end careers not thinking about whether or not that career is something they will actually be happy in. I just happened to realize pretty quickly that wasn’t my cup of tea. However, there’s no school that teaches you how to do this; it’s something you have to learn through others and lots of time.

Anyone these days can get a contractor’s license—but very few can actually do the work. I think the biggest issue customers have is finding the right builder who gives them options and solutions through all the phases of the projects. I constantly see contractors and subcontractors have holdups that cause delays in their projects which, in the end, causes homeowners’ deadlines to get pushed back. That isn’t as much of an issue with us because we can do most trades in-house. We still work with lots of subs for all phases of the projects, but what I’m getting at is if something happens to a sub’s schedule, we can pick up the work and keep the project going.

Q.What brought you to Sandpoint? And what are you most grateful for when it comes to this community?

A. I started my company in the Seattle area about eight years ago, and one of my long-term repeat clients happened to have a house in the area here that was in dire need of a remodel. They couldn’t find any builders they could work with or who they trusted with nearly a half-a-milliondollar budget. They had asked me to come here and do the project. Not only did I do the project, I decided to stay. My brothers, who worked with me at the time, also made the same choice.

The better part of the deal is that I also met my wife, Hannah, about four years ago, in Priest River, and since then it’s been an easy decision to stay. Plus, I just fit in better to the country life and would choose this lifestyle over the big city any day.

Q.What is most rewarding to you about the work you do?

A. It’s definitely a cross between the relationships we make with the customers and the cool factor of our projects. I occasionally see our customers outside of work too, as it eventually becomes a cross between a personal and business relationship. What else would you expect after spending six months or a year working together or putting five, six and sometimes even seven figures into a house?

Q.In what ways do you like to give back and show your support to the community? Are you involved in any local organizations?

A. With our busy schedule, I don’t have the time to commit to any of that but, you know, big shout out to Albeni Falls Building Supply in Oldtown and the team that runs that lumber counter. Coming from the big city and working with the bigger building suppliers, it’s no comparison. They’ve always been there for us, so we’ve always continued to make sure a majority of our materials come from them. They’re about as local to the community as you can get.

Q.When not working, how do you like to spend your free time, and with whom?

A. Right now, my wife and I are building our house and a shop for the company, which has taken all our nights and weekends. She comes from a big family local to Priest River, so we usually try to spend our time with them any chance we get.

Q.Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

A. Thanks to our supportive community, we’re currently booked until spring of 2024.

JOHN DAFFRON'S MELODY

In the melodious town of Sandpoint, where tunes tinkle like wind chimes on a breezy day, there resides a man with a mesmerizing tale that will strum the strings of your heart. A friend's heartfelt notes led me to the extraordinary story of a gifted musician, and an inspiration to all who know him. Meet John Daffron, a local singer/songwriter, whose symphony of life crescendos with a miraculous twist—a tale of tenacity, triumph, and a transformation like no other.

John Daffron, or “Johnny” as the townsfolk fondly call him, was no ordinary minstrel. With a guitar as his scepter and a voice as his anthem, he danced to the beats of his soul. Not many knew the opus of his past, the crescendo of his journey and the allegro vivace of his music. But the story of a man who conquered death itself deserves to be shared. To think that this troubadour, who now enchants audiences with his melodies, faced the dark chords of fate. It was whispered in hushed tones that John had once battled a relentless lung condition that threatened to silence his song. Yet, in a dramatic symphony of fate, he emerged victorious with a double lung transplant, a harmonious cadence that surprised even his doctors.

John's life ballad took many turns before reaching the harmonious notes of today. "My father used to sing to us kids and play the guitar when we were quite young, lower elementary age," recalls John, reminiscing about his early musical influences. His childhood exposure to classical music and years spent in the school symphony laid the groundwork for his musical journey. As he matured, he found himself drawn to the enchanting melodies of the guitar and swiftly mastered the instrument. John Daffron's name echoes through the streets of Sandpoint, his hometown stage, where his music sways hearts like a gentle breeze among the pine trees.

A professional educator for three decades, John's love for music found its roots in childhood, where his father's serenades and classical melodies nurtured a passion that would blossom in the years to come. Soon, John was performing with several bands, enthralling audiences across Europe with his guitar prowess. A virtuoso of both education and music, he played many roles. For 30 years, he graced the halls of academia as a dedicated educator, imparting knowledge like a seasoned conductor leading an orchestra of young minds. Yet, life had a different chord in store for him.

Four years ago, he set foot in the picturesque town of

IF YOU HAVE A SKILL, GIFT OR KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN BENEFIT OTHERS,

you should share it.

Sandpoint, where his serenades echoed through the cobblestone alleys. He struck chords with his listeners, bewitching them with his ballads. But fate played a wild riff, and his declining health necessitated the operatic climax of a double lung transplant. In a crescendo of courage, John fought his way back to the stage. Like a phoenix, he rose from the ashes of his past, triumphant and tenacious.

In his interview, Johnny shared candidly, "I am a stubborn person, and I think it’s served me well in this case. I wasn’t going to let this disease win under any circumstance." These words epitomize the essence of his soulful journey—a tale of resilience, courage, and love for life. He began performing again, and his voice, liberated by his newfound lung capacity, soared to even higher pitches, painting a vibrant aurora in the hearts of his listeners.

But there's more to this lyrical virtuoso than his mellifluous melodies. Behind the scenes, John is a symphony of service and selflessness. As a member of the Elks Lodge, he orchestrates a melody of giving, leading committees that oversee high school scholarships. His generous spirit, like a gentle flute melody, harmonizes with the needs of the community. However, not all ballads are without challenges, and John's struggle includes a movement that tested his physical fortitude. His lung transplant journey led him through a labyrinth of hospitals, a test of endurance that played on the stave of his resilience. The grueling recovery played on, and as the tempo quickened, he fought to regain his strength like a

symphony reasserting its rhythm. Weight loss, a familiar refrain, greeted him during his convalescence. But John orchestrated his comeback, working out tirelessly with a personal trainer to regain the muscle mass that had ebbed away. As he exercised, his harmony and health composed a perfect duet. A vigorous routine of gym sessions and cycling recaptured the rhythm of his strength. His trainer, Quinn Andrews, guided him with deft hands and a keen eye, crafting a song of renewal.

Like an intermezzo, John's musical prowess took center stage. With a sense of deja vu, he once again played his guitar and sang with all his might. The elation of finding his voice restored was unparalleled, and his vocal range, like a soaring soprano, reached new heights. His return to performing heralded a symphony of gratitude and connection with the Sandpoint community. Regular gigs at Willow Bay Restaurant and Marina and Arlo's Ristorante offer him an opportunity to share his melodious magic with enthusiastic audiences. "Performing in Sandpoint has been rewarding, allowing me to connect with our community. The residents here love live music, and I cherish every moment," he shared.

As the seasons changed, so did the tempo of John's life symphony. Skiing, once a favorite movement, found its way back into his repertoire. Though the initial notes were off-key, he persisted, diligently working on his balance and strength until the melody of skiing returned with a beautiful resonance. The journey from near silence to a full-fledged concerto was not without its dissonance. But in the rich tapestry of John's life, every

note played its part. Now, with the harmony of health and music united, John stands like a triumphant maestro, facing a standing ovation from life itself. His joyous anthem of life and love resounds in the hearts of those who have witnessed his indomitable spirit.

Dear Sandpoint readers, in the finale of this ode to John Daffron, remember that life's symphony is a complex score. Embrace every note, whether soaring highs or haunting lows, for it is this song that defines the essence of our existence. Let John's story be an inspiration, a melody of hope that reminds us all to embrace the crescendos and decrescendos, for in the symphony of life, every note has its place.

As the last hums of this harmonic tale fades away, let it echo in your hearts like a lasting melody, a reminder of the power of human spirit, a crescendo of courage and a triumph of resilience. John humbly shared, "If you have a skill, gift or knowledge that can benefit others, you should share it." His warm-hearted demeanor and passion for helping others resonate through every note he plays, leaving a lasting impact on the hearts of those he touches.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to John Daffron, a remarkable individual, for sharing the incredible journey of his life with me. May his journey resonate in the hearts of readers and inspire us all to embrace the crescendos and decrescendos of our own lives. John's path is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to triumph over adversity, a poetic tale of endurance and courage set to the rhythm of Sandpoint's beating heart. With each strum of his guitar and each note of his voice, John Daffron reminds us that even in the darkest of symphonies, the melody of hope can lead us to the light.

If you don’t have a fireplace, explore options for a gas or electric insert that provides both warmth and a charming focal point. Arrange cozy seating nearby, complete with soft throws and plush pillows, to create a comfortable nook where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quality time with loved ones. A revamped fireplace area will become the heart of your home during the autumn months, radiating warmth and coziness.

Boost Energy Efficiency and Maintain Exterior

Prepare your home for the changing seasons by focusing on energy efficiency and exterior maintenance. Inspect windows and doors for any drafts and seal them to prevent heat loss. Upgrade insulation in your attic and walls to ensure your home remains comfortable throughout autumn. Install weather stripping around doors and windows, and consider replacing outdated thermostats with programmable or smart thermostats to optimize energy usage. On the exterior, inspect the roof for damaged shingles, clean out gutters, and trim tree branches that could potentially cause damage during storms. Give your home a fresh coat of paint or stain to protect it from the elements and enhance its curb appeal. Don’t forget to aerate the lawn, apply fall fertilizer, and plant autumn flowers for a vibrant and inviting exterior. By addressing energy efficiency and exterior maintenance, you’ll ensure your home is ready for the autumn season.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Retreat

Maximize your enjoyment of the beautiful autumn weather by transforming your outdoor space into an inviting retreat. Install a fire pit or patio heater to extend outdoor usability into the cooler evenings. Create comfortable seating areas with cozy outdoor furniture, adorned with warm-hued cushions and blankets. Consider adding string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Enhance the cozy atmosphere with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins, gourds and autumn wreaths. If you have a garden, plant late-blooming flowers or add autumnal plants to create a vibrant display of colors. An outdoor retreat will allow you to savor the beauty of the season, host gatherings with friends and family, or simply relax in nature’s embrace.

PLANT LATE-BLOOMING FLOWERS OR ADD AUTUMNAL PLANTS TO CREATE A VIBRANT DISPLAY OF COLORS.

Autumn presents a ...

wonderful opportunity to engage in home improvement projects that capture the essence of the season. By revitalizing your kitchen, creating a cozy fireplace area, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing your outdoor retreat, you’ll transform your living space into a haven that embraces the beauty and warmth of autumn. These projects will not only enhance the aesthetics of your home but also improve its functionality and comfort. Get ready to fall in love with your home all over again as you immerse yourself in these transformative projects. Embrace the magic of autumn and create a living space that invites you to savor the season’s beauty and create lasting memories.

Light Speed Fiber Internet

IN GREATER SANDPOINT

Seamlessly work and play with Ting Internet

30

Serving the Sandpoint community since June of 2018, Ting Internet guarantees its customers light speed fiber internet for seamless work and play.

Ting currently provides service to approximately 3,000 addresses throughout Sandpoint, Dover, Ponderay and Kootenai, Idaho. Unlike traditional cable internet, which transmits data through copper-fiber hybrid wiring that is prone to corrosion, fiber internet is made of glass fiber, the size of a human hair, that transmits information using light beams, resulting in infinite capacity.

At Ting, they believe fiber internet is the future and a way to help futureproof the communities they serve. In the Sandpoint area, Ting offers three packages: 1000, 200 and 50 megabits per second (Mbps). “Our most popular package provides both download and upload speeds of 1,000 megabits per second for $89, which is ideal for smart homes, marathon TV streaming and gaming on all your devices,” shares Kari Saccomanno, marketing manager, Greater Sandpoint. The 200 and 50 Mbps packages, $69 and $39 respectively, also provide symmetrical speeds along with the same reliability and great customer service as the most popular package. Even better, all Ting Internet packages come with unlimited data.

“Choosing fiber to the home also allows students to complete their assignments and those who work from home to do so without the struggles of traditional cable internet,” smiles Kari.

Whereas traditional cable internet is typically installed as a shared network with neighbors, Ting installs fibers directly into a home or business. Operating this way ensures fiber internet customers do not share bandwidth, which guarantees high speeds and service reliability. Those with conventional cable internet are prone to experience slower speeds and buffering during prime hours, such as after-school hours.

“We believe humanity should be at the core of everything we do. It’s why we always try to connect customers with real people to help address any challenges,” states Kari. “Leading with humanity and as a

genuine part of the local community is crucial to bringing high-quality, critical infrastructure and internet choice to any community. We invest in our communities and strive to become true partners in every market we operate and are proud to support local good works in Sandpoint.”

Ting has worked with the Panida Theater to help them meet their Century Fund Campaign Goals, supported Sandpoint High School by gifting a computer lab, and continues to sponsor a variety of local organizations throughout the year.

In addition, to show their appreciation to their loyal customers, Ting hosts customer appreciation parties each quarter, as they believe that their customers are their most important asset. This year, they hosted a “Frozen” event at the Panida, where 250 adults and children were able to join Ting and its employees for a night of family fun and a networking event for local businesses.

Are you ready to make the switch from traditional cable internet to light speed fiber internet? Sign up for Ting Internet today and get an unlimited talk, text and data mobile plan carried on the Verizon Network—all for as low as $49. Plus, with additional devices at just $10 per line, you can bring the whole family along.

Anticipating FALL 2023

Real Estate Market Trends

With the changing seasons comes a shift in dynamics within the housing market. As we approach the autumn of 2023, there are several trends and factors to watch out for.

Firstly, interest rates are expected to remain relatively stable. The Federal Reserve's cautious approach to monetary policy is likely to keep mortgage rates around their current levels. This is good news for potential buyers, as steady interest rates can make homeownership more accessible and affordable. Prospective buyers can expect a continued window of opportunity to secure their dream homes without the pressure of rapidly rising rates.

DAVE SPENCER, a REAL ESTATE name you can trust. 208.627.9684 | dspencer@kellyright.com Kelly Right Real Estate Team When you think REAL ESTATE, think DAVE SPENCER! One intriguing trend on the horizon is the peculiar buying pattern. While homes are increasingly being listed at a reasonable market value, buyers often seem to be waiting to act until homes are priced a little under their market value. The changing market might present buyers with an advantageous position to explore homes that offer excellent value for their money.

Interestingly, the online landscape is playing a substantial role in shaping buying behaviors. We are currently witnessing an unprecedented surge in online activity from potential buyers. Many are engaging with listings and showing their interest by liking and saving properties in much higher numbers. However, what sets this trend apart is the cautious approach that buyers are adopting. While the virtual world is bustling with activity, physical showings are

witnessing a different trend. Buyers are more likely to proceed with showings when homes are priced below their market value. This indicates a deliberate strategy on the part of buyers to make the most of their investment and capitalize on the current market conditions.

With interest rates holding fairly steady (especially when compared to the historic rate increases last year), homes priced strategically below their market value, and a surge in online engagement, potential buyers have a unique window to navigate the market.

As the leaves change colors, so do the dynamics of the housing market, offering opportunities for both buyers and sellers to make the most of this season of change.

Sandpoint’s first schoolhouse, which went by two names— Defenbach and Central School, on the left, and the teacher's cottage to the right, 1898-1899. Photo

THE FIRST STUDENTS OF SANDPOINT

brought to you by THE BONNER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM

As kids drag their feet back to school and dream of a world where they can live like Peter Pan, there was a decent length of time where there was no school in Sandpoint, and children were considered running wild.

In 1880, a settlement called Pend Oreille was established. There was no official school at the time, but Pappy Smith was considered Sandpoint’s first

teacher starting in 1883. Pappy’s “school” held classes where they could—homes, retired saloons, and more.

Believe it or not, it wasn’t until 1892 that education for children became a concern. An article was published stating that “There are fifty children here, and why it is we are not favored with a place in which to educate them instead of letting them run around the streets and acquire bad habits is a matter of proper authorities should be brought to account for.”

Sometime soon after this article was published, the first official schoolhouse was erected at the northwest corner of First Avenue and Church Street.
