Worried about inflation? Consider these moves

As you know, inflation was big news throughout 2022. But will it continue in 2023? And looking even further ahead, how should you account for inflation in your longterm plans?

In regard to the first question, many experts predict that inflation will cool off this year, though there are no guarantees. The high inflation of last year is thought to have been caused by some unusual factors, such as a spike in the demand for consumer goods as the world came out of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to supply chain issues. Also, the war in Ukraine drove up oil prices, increasing the cost of manufacturing and shipping and driving up the price of wheat and other commodities.

In any case, last year reminded us that inflation needs to be reckoned with as you work toward your financial goals. But how you respond to inflation will depend somewhat on your stage of life. So, here are some suggestions to consider:

If you’re still working …

• Contribute more to your retirement plans. If you can afford to put more money away in your IRA and 401(k), you may want to do so. The more resources you’ll eventually have available in retirement, the better protected you are against the rising cost of living.

• Adjust your portfolio objectives with your financial professional. Using tools such as “hypothetical” illustrations, a financial professional can show you some different paths you might take with your investments, given different rates of inflation. So, for example, if you feel that inflation may be higher for a

longer period than you once thought, you could request a hypothetical showing how you might need to adjust your investment mix to achieve your long-term goals, given your risk tolerance and time horizon.

If you’re already retired …

CD values are subject to interest rate risk such that when interest rates rise, the prices of CDs can decrease. If CDs are sold prior to maturity, the investor can lose principal value. • Consider part-time work or consulting. Once you retire from your career, it doesn’t mean you can never do any paid work again. If you’ve accumulated years of experience and expertise, you could use your skills as a consultant. Also, many part-time jobs are available for retirees. With the added income from employment, you may be able to delay taking withdrawals from your retirement accounts and other investments, possibly extending their longevity. (Once you turn 72, though, you will need to begin taking money from your 401(k) and traditional IRA.)

• Delay taking Social Security. You can begin taking Social Security when you’re 62, but your monthly checks will be substantially bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. (You could even wait until 70, at which point your monthly benefits will max out.) Of course, the ability to delay taking Social Security depends on whether you can afford it, but it may be possible if you work longer than you once planned or if you work part time in retirement. But even if you do need to take Social Security before your full retirement age, your payments will be adjusted annually for inflation—in fact, for 2023, benefit checks will rise 8.7 percent over 2022.

We’ll always have to deal with some level of inflation—so it’s a good idea to be prepared.

"FOR ME, GRACE IS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE. IT IS A WAY OF WALKING IN AUTHENTICITY AND NON-JUDGEMENT, WHILE HOLDING SPACE FOR OTHER PEOPLE’S QUIRKS AND COLORS! IT IS A PRACTICE THAT STARTS WITH UNCONDITIONAL SELF-ACCEPTANCE, WHICH IN TURN RIPPLES OUT INTO YOUR COMMUNITY AND HOMELIFE."

Lindy Lewis was born and raised right here in Sandpoint, Idaho. She graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1986 and went on to attend Gonzaga University, where she earned a BA in marketing and communications. After working in Berlin, Germany, for two years, where she worked in marketing and learned the language, she moved to Spokane, Washington, to marry and start a family. She would return home to Sandpoint in 2001 to be close to family while raising her three young children.

In 2015, she founded her company, Let Your Color Out. Today, in addition to being a published author, she offers workshops and yoga retreats at her beautiful Sandpoint property. Read on to find out more about Lindy and her life’s work.

Q.What was the inspiration behind Let Your Color Out? And what does it encompass?

A. Let Your Color Out started with one book, “The Recovering Alpha Female – Inspiring Grace in the Mind and Body,” and then became a series of three books with workshops, workbooks and peace products. After my marriage, corporate career and health challenges, along with other humbling blocks—as I call them—took me out of that perfect onpaper life, I had no choice but to slow down, soften the edges and drop the comparative narrative in order to be well with Multiple Sclerosis and raise my three kids from that place of heart not head.

Q.You strive to ‘inspire Grace’ and encourage others to ‘seek Grace.’ How do you define Grace? And why is it a central part of your work?

A. For me, Grace is a lifestyle choice. It is a way of walking in authenticity and non-judgement, while holding space for other people’s quirks and colors! It is a practice that starts with unconditional self-acceptance, which in turn ripples out into your community and homelife.

Q.You talk a lot about the “alpha” female. How would you describe an alpha female? Are/were you an alpha female? And why do you address this specific personality trait?

A. I invented the term Alpha-holic, as once an Alpha always an Alpha. This is what book two is all about! It takes practice to unwind the mind and to find peace in quiet. What I love is that I have developed somewhat of a language that helps navigate the very active brain that offers permission to slow down, unconditionally love ourselves and practice non-judgment. I believe that when we can be good to ourselves, we can be good to others.

The amped-and-ramped, racked-and-stacked, over-scheduled culture has created an Alpha epidemic. More and more people are attaining their value from external praise and grades, paychecks and productivity, “likes’” and social media popularity. Don’t misunderstand, I love the Alpha or Type A personality, but this driven, perfectionistic life can leave one feeling depleted, exhausted, and is not sustainable for longevity.

Q.As a published author, who would benefit from reading one of your works? And what do you hope your readers take away from reading one of your books?

A. My books are designed not just for females; they are good for anybody who has a short attention span and feels they are on a path to crash. When I was living each one of these, I would just take one a-ha like “progress not perfection” or “be the black sheep” and work with this concept until I really could embody that new perspective.

Counterintuitively, it is equally important—if not more important—to nurture that softer, sweeter, gentler, more tender side of the Alpha. This is

Grace. As we cultivate this state, allowing for imperfections, celebrating our mini successes, embracing our quirks, we can naturally offer this same appreciation to our peers, our teenagers, friends and parents. It anchors that place of Grace where one can lead from the heart, not the head. This is where love lives. This is a practice—it takes time, and it is not the easy path. I always say the high road is the hard road!

Q.On your website you mention learning how to redefine experiences as inspiration, and that your own experiences include divorce, disease and a learning disability. Can you tell us more about these experiences and how they were used to inspire you on your current journey?

A. EVERY-body has something that causes strife and challenge in life. Mine just happened to come in the form of diagnosis, disease and complex divorce. When we are taken out of our “planned” life, it really comes down to picking a mindset that will help turn the wounds into wisdom. I am eternally grateful that I started this journey at 35—not 55! I have transformed my thinking and have such a deep appreciation for each of our “you-niqueness,” nuances in nature and the body’s ability to heal.

Q.What do you believe is your purpose in life? And how are you fulfilling that purpose?

A. This is such a big question loaded with pressure in our society. After spending years pondering just that question, I wonder if it is enough just to be a good person, to be kind each day, offer a smile to someone who needs it, to forgive and move forward with more understanding and kindness to those around us. And if I had to name a purpose, it is to empower people to be mentally healthy, as the body follows the mind.

Q.Are you involved in the community in any capacity?

A. I have been helping the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) students raise money to travel to southern Idaho this spring, and I still am very active with Underground Kindness (a nonprofit organization focused on empowering students, supporting teachers and connecting communities). I also teach stress management and yoga medicine. Additionally, I am called to be a good steward of the earth.

Q.What are you most grateful for when it comes to living in Sandpoint and being a part of this community?

A. I am so very grateful to live in this stunning part of the world. I have said my entire life that we’re so lucky to live here, and 55 years later I still believe this. We are surrounded by beauty in nature and wonderful, generous people in this socioeconomically diverse community.

Q.Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers and/ or that you want them to know about Lindy Lewis and your books?

A. My health and creative life is a testament to living predominantly parasympathetic, as I am blessed to live a healthy, active life with a serious illness in the body.

The books inspire Grace in the mind and body. I love being an Alpha, she’s the one who wrote the books and gets things done. But this is the reactive—not reflective—approach; we don’t breathe deeply here and hold space for other people’s opinions. I encourage this walk of Grace because we can access love and compassion and express our nurturing nature. Our bodies heal in this place, our rest/digest function of the body is engaged—and optimum health comes from that space.

Lindy's full book series is available for purchase at Sandpoint Super Drug and online at LindyLewis.com.

REST AND RECOVER WITH PEACE OF MIND

“My passion is to provide holistic care to each and every one of my clients, to get to know them, and to listen with my heart to what barriers they have to healing,” shares Kelli Hansen, owner of LanteRN Health Consulting.

Opened in October of 2022, LanteRN Health Consulting offers nursing packages, both short term and monthly, that include ongoing support for the client—and their family. “Clients who either have a planned surgery or those who may have been in an accident and are recovering from one or multiple traumas can utilize my services

in a number of ways,” Kelli shares. “I offer a perioperative package that includes a consultation, pre-op preparation appointment, accompaniment the day of surgery and in-home support for either a few hours or days after discharge.” Additional a-la-carte services include in-home triage for out-of-town guests, IV hydration, wound care, suture removal and much more!

If a client is experiencing complex medical diagnosis or chronic health issues, LanteRN Health Consulting offers monthly services, providing clients weekly in-home wellness checks that include a comprehensive

16

health assessment, vital signs, medication management, medical record keeping, communication and care navigation with providers, as well as transportation to appointments and companionship during hospital stays or outpatient treatments. Services can also be customized to meet the needs of the client, whether it be respite care for a family caregiver who needs some time away to rest and recharge, supporting families with a new baby as a night nurse, or even accompanying clients on trips so families can relax and connect, knowing their loved one’s health is in qualified hands, all while preserving healthy and balanced family dynamics.

“I truly desire to connect with each client I serve and treat them like I would like my loved ones treated. I bring a commitment to professionalism, accountability, compassion, integrity, and hopefully a good dose of laughter to all I serve,” says Kelli.

LanteRN is truly in a league of its own. Described as boutique-style concierge nursing—part of a new wave of health care that is gaining popularity across the country—LanteRN is reimagining modern nursing care. “Home health agencies offer similar services but are limited, since they can only provide the prescribed service that insurance has authorized. Additionally, some home health agencies are unable to get to a client due to their location,” affirms Kelli. “As an independent concierge nurse, I have the unique ability to offer nursing support for the whole person, and I do not have constraints on my time or the distance to meet a client. I can work in collaboration with home health agencies to offer clients additional support as needed.”

Kelli, a Sandpoint native, completed her training as a certified nursing assistant and began working at Bonner General Hospital in 2004. She was involved in designing and opening Luther Park at Sandpoint in 2008 as well as the Pend Oreille Surgery Center in 2009. “The experience gained in those years was instrumental in my passion for innovation and leadership within the health-care community,” she states. In addition, her husband Jarrod enlisted in the Army in 2011 as a combat medic, which took the couple to Oklahoma and Texas, where Kelli had the opportunity to grow even more in different environments such as small rural hospitals, large health systems, as well as privately owned specialty hospitals and clinics.

She was inspired to open her concierge nursing service after several years at the “bedside” of patients working as a post-op nurse, where she helped patients recover from surgery, providing education and instructions for when they went home. “Oftentimes, patients would ask me, ‘Can I just take you home with me?’ Initially I laughed it off and felt honored by such a sweet compliment. After some time, I began to wonder, ‘Why can’t they?’ Nurses are uniquely equipped to utilize the nursing process in a variety of environments and are experts in identifying possible obstacles to recovery. Not to mention we are chock full of nifty tips and tricks to make life easier while recovering from a surgery or illness.”

LanteRN Health Consulting was born “to illuminate and correct the obstacles on the path to healing so that patients don’t fall through the cracks so common in our standardized methods of care.” Kelli believes in creating lasting relationships and bridging the gap between patients and providers, as well as being a resource and advocate to help clients live to their fullest potential.

When it comes to what Kelli finds most rewarding about her work, it is when a client feels empowered to take responsibility for their health. “With guidance, support and education, clients feel less fear/stress related to their health, and that makes room for living a more joyful and peaceful life. Sometimes just having that added positive support makes all the difference!” she smiles.

While the nursing services offered by LHC are not currently covered by insurance, they are able to accept Health Savings/Flexible Spending funds, as LanteRN is a qualified nursing service.

If you or a loved one is looking for a private concierge nurse who will partner with you to guide and comfort in your time of need, reach out to Kelli today.

AREA BUSINESSES TO SHOP, DINE AND TREAT YOURSELF AND THAT SPECIAL

SOMEONE—FOR VALENTINE’S DAY OR ANY OCCASION

Love is in the air, as February has officially made its arrival. With that said, if you have found yourself still undecided on how to celebrate Valentine’s Day, we’ve got some great local businesses offering everything from incredible meals, gorgeous flower arrangements, specialty gifts and cards, and much more. We’re sure you’ll discover just how to romance that special person in your life. Read on for some inspiration.

There’s no place like a beautiful meal at Trinity at City Beach (58 Bridge Street), and they will be offering a limited Valentine’s Day Menu from 4 to 9pm on Tuesday, February 14. “We are typically closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but we have never missed a Valentine’s Day—and certainly won’t in 2023,” shares Justin Dick, owner. “We have had a number of our staff specifically request working on Valentine’s Day, as it’s always a great night with wonderful customers.”

On the menu, guests will be treated to Trinity classics like Prime Rib, Filet Mignon, and Lobster Ravioli, as well as some Valentine’s additions like Surf and Turf with 6-ounce Grilled Top Sirloin, Béarnaise Sauce and a Butterflied Coldwater Lobster Tail, according to Justin. “We will also be serving Gorgonzola Shrimp, Cedar Plank Salmon, and one of my alltime favorites, Prosciutto- and Brie-Stuffed Chicken Breast with a Tomato Rosemary Sauce.”

Book your reservations today (208.255.7558), as they are sure to fill up soon. When all reservations have been filled, you can still have the staff put your name on their waitlist to fill in any cancellations they might have, and they’ll leave a few tables open for walk-in guests as well.

“I believe Trinity makes a special Valentine’s Day because so many of our guests met at Trinity on first dates or had wedding proposals and/or wedding receptions at Trinity over the past 14 years,” smiles Justin. “It’s great to hear all the stories of how everyone met and how many years they’re celebrating as a couple.”

Trinity at City Beach has another special treat in store for Valentine’s Day, as they’ll be partnering with Sugar Tooth, Sandpoint’s only chocolatier, to arrange for some handmade chocolates for every table that comes in. Be sure to stop by Sugar Tooth’s shop as well (located at 334 North First Avenue), where you can find wonderful specialty items to gift your significant other or the kiddos.

Another wonderful dining option is Pack River Store (1587 Rapid Lightning Road), where they’ll be offering a special Valentine’s Menu sure to impress—and diners have three opportunities to dine and imbibe. On February 14, 15 and 16, they will be offering an eight-course dinner, with each evening accommodating 40 guests. “We are doing three days in order to ensure everyone who wants to attend is able,” smiles Brittany Jacobson, who co-owns Pack River Store with husband, and chef, Alex.

Guests who choose to dine at Pack River are surely in for a treat with the multi-course menu: Amuse Bouche - Panko-Crusted and Fried Goat Cheese, local honey infused with chili flakes, pine nut and herb salsa, on black truffle cream fresh; First Course - Rare Grilled Beef Heart, bone marrow, red onion-caper-parsley salad, chimichurri, and Bluebird baguette; Second Course - Fried Oysters, beet puree, beet chips, parsnip puree, parsnip chips and sauce gribiche; Third Course - Soft Shell Crab “Scampi”: deep-fried soft-shell crab, red pepper and tomato puree, fresh basil, chili oil, micro arugula from Pack River Farm, parmesan, and salmon roe; Fourth Course - Pan-Roasted Duck Breast, purple cabbage puree, roasted green cabbage, balsamic reduction, herb oil and crispy carrots; Intermezzo; Fifth Course - House Boudin Blanc Sausage, pomme puree, roasted apples and apple jus; Sixth Course - Roasted Fillet Mignon, Crawfish-Lobster-Saffron Risotto, long cooked broccoli, and sauce chasseur; Dessert Course - Chocolate Three Ways: Dark Chocolate Soufflé, Chocolate Ice Cream with Amarna cherry creme anglaise, and Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Cookie with Hawaiian sea salt.

The cost for the meal is priced $130 per person and does not include tax or gratuity, and no substitutions can be made.

If you’re looking to enjoy a meal at home on Valentine’s Day, Pack River Store offers a variety of take-and-bake meals, like lasagnas, enchiladas and pasta, salad and bread, and no meal would be complete without dessert!

When it comes to what makes Pack River Store a hit destination for a great meal, no matter the occasion, it’s their “hole in the wall vibe,” according to Brittany. “I love that when you pull up to the store for the first time, you’re not expecting to eat a delicious, thoughtful meal. It’s always fun shocking people with the food we put out. The atmosphere is fun, local, country store. We have an excellent beer and wine selection, all at retail prices. We utilize local farmers and source ingredients from many local vendors to ensure quality ingredients and support the community.”

Brittany reminds the community that they also offer their coursed tasting menus monthly, and the best way to get details, before the general public, of upcoming events and specials is to sign up for their mailing list at PackRiverStore.com.

When it comes to gifts, flowers and Valentine’s Day go hand in hand, and Nancy Hastings, owner of All Seasons Garden & Floral (31831 Hwy 200 East), looks forward to creating that beautiful arrangement to wow that special lady in your life. “We specialize in wildflower arrangements that many of our long-time clients enjoy. It allows every arrangement hand crafted and designed by our amazing team of florists to look unique,” she shares. They also do mixed plant baskets and even fresh and plant combinations to give that long-lasting gift.

Because of North Idaho's unpredictable weather, Nancy encourages those who want Valentine’s Day deliveries to order early (by February 6 or 7 is best). You can place orders online, anytime, with their secure, private website, AllSeasonsGardenandFloral.com. “Keep in mind if you hope to send flowers out of town, the best way to make sure you are sending flowers through a real florist and not just an internet order desk is to jump on Google Maps and request ‘Florist near [insert address, city and zip code here],’ and then you will get a map of local shops with a real designer for that area.”

At All Seasons Garden & Floral, they have a variety of gift ideas that they can easily incorporate with flowers and plants “to make it an extra special, loving gift,” affirms Nancy. “We have incorporated fountains, birdhouses, and even small to life-size fairies in our designs for that personal touch you can't find anywhere else.

“It is such fun to tuck a stunning pair of our Monet earrings, yummy chocolates, balloons, bulb gardens and cuddly bears into our floral

“I LOVE THAT WHEN YOU PULL UP TO THE STORE FOR THE FIRST TIME, YOU’RE NOT EXPECTING TO EAT A DELICIOUS, THOUGHTFUL MEAL. IT’S ALWAYS FUN SHOCKING PEOPLE WITH THE FOOD WE PUT OUT."

designs,” she adds. “But don't forget, if your North Idaho sweetheart is a ‘Garden Gal,’ she might really be desiring some of our top-of-the-line garden tools or a soaring Great Blue Heron or other décor for the front yard or porch as a Valentine’s gift! Because we are the only garden center in the area open yearround, we already are bursting at the seams with amazing garden gifts to inspire hope for spring and put a smile on anyone's face!”

Nancy is grateful to all of her clients who have, for more than 25 years now, allowed the family owned business to be a part of their most special occasions. “From birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and even very personal family funerals, we are honored to design flowers that make us feel part of your families, and we thank you.”

Don’t forget to buy your valentine that special card to let him/her know how much they mean to you, and we’ve got just the place. “Sharon's Hallmark is the go-to place for Valentine's Day,” affirms Deanna Harris, owner. “We have a great selection of cards, chocolates and gifts for all ages! Plus, we offer complimentary gift wrapping.”

The Downtown Shopping District will be hosting a Chocolate Walk from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, February 11, where you can shop and taste your way through downtown. You will find a QR Code at all the Sandpoint Downtown Shopping District businesses during the event; scan the code to be entered to win a beautiful Burlwood wine holder, a bottle of Pend d’Oreille Winery’s L’Oeuvre and two wine glasses, along with a pair of tickets to see Journey. Look on Sandpoint Downtown Shopping District's website, DowntownSandpoint. com, for participating venues. The winner will be announced the day before Valentine's Day, Monday, February 13.

Kick off your Valentine’s Day a few days early by attending a comedy show at the Panida, followed by drinks at everyone’s favorite late-night spot, The 219 Lounge. Toast to love over wine, appetizers and music at Pend Oreille Winery. Opt for a lunch date at Barrel 33, and don't miss their Gals N Wine event on February 12. Another great option is to gift your partner a spa package from Aiyanna Wellness Spa. The sky’s the limit, as Sandpoint is home to so many wonderful locally owned shops, restaurants and specialty services.

Celebrate love while supporting local businesses this Valentine’s Day.

'HOW'S THE MARKET?' REAL ESTATE

A win-win for buyers and sellers

"How’s the real estate market?” might have been the most asked question of 2022. My answer typically included something about the latest shock from another interest rate hike. In 2023, it’s exciting to already see a steadier market emerging; one that can be a win-win for both buyers and sellers. In particular, those who act early this year can take advantage of some unique benefits and be one giant step closer to what lies on the other side of selling or buying their home in North Idaho.

As of mid-January, we can see three major signs that show a rosier picture for real estate. First, showings of listings are on the rise. More showings means more active buyers. One example: A listing that was on the market for four months last fall had only four showings total. That same listing, with no price change, has now had five showings in just the last 14 days. Second, mortgage-backed securities are increasing in value, which translates to lower interest rates and more buying power. And third, inventory of available houses remains historically low.

Winter sellers have a lot to gain this year. Here’s how:

• Be one of the few gems on the market. The first “showing” is always online these days. Be sure your photos, videos and 3-D tours are some of the best out there. Much of that depends on your agent and their team.

• That leads to the next seller tip. Interview for your agent. Ask for their specific marketing plan. It should be more than just “putting it on the MLS.” Ask what kind of team they have behind them—excellent photographers, title companies, contractors and inspectors are a must. Research their track record and experience; they don’t have to have the biggest numbers, but they should have a record of success. Ask them for their strategy of keeping the listing fresh and appealing to buyers.

• Focus on the quality of your showings. If the home is vacant, arrange to have the home’s temperature somewhere in the ‘60s. Have someone on hand to keep the driveway and sidewalk clear. If the house is winterized, ask your agent to make sure that is communicated well.

• Ask for current market data. Average days on market and sold prices for houses in your price range and area can help you know what to expect as you are on the market.

• Be prepared for buyer requests. Even though you will be one of the few on the market, your buyer on the other end is choosing to invest after a very tumultuous year. It will be normal for buyers to ask for some repairs and price reductions. Because of low inventory, sellers will still have bargaining power but should expect to find a happy medium to get to closing.

Buyers

• If you haven’t yet, find your loan officer. Interview two to three. Don’t settle. You should know ahead of time about your costs; appraisal prices and loan fees can vary widely. Almost all loans do lead back to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But each bank has different restrictions on credit scores, down payments, etc., and that can dramatically impact your future monthly payment. Ultimately, sellers are looking for pre-qualified buyers. Your offer is much stronger when they know you’re ready.

• Same goes for your real estate agent. Pick one who will invest the time to meet or speak with you and determine your wants and needs. It’s true. Any licensed real estate agent can be a door opener. But now more than ever, you will benefit from someone who will make sure you don’t miss anything and you don’t spend more than you have to.

• Base your offer and requests on facts, not feelings. Statistics show that we are in a balanced market. That means both sides give and take to get to closing. If your offer is below the list price, be sure your agent is providing reasonable comparable sales with your offer. If you ask for a price reduction or repairs, sellers are much more likely to work with you when you and your agent have gathered written estimates on the work that needs to be done.

Winter 2023 is a unique time with advantages to both buyers and sellers. These steps will help both win!

Now more than ever, you will benefit from someone who will make sure you don’t miss anything and you don’t spend more than you have to.

MARKET REPORT

Your current market update

WE ARE IN A UNIQUE WINDOW WHERE BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS CAN WIN. Signs are showing of interest rates settling down. Mortgage-backed securities are continuing to increase in value, causing interest rates to trend downward. This means lower house payments for buyers and less volatility overall. Traditionally, sellers are told to wait until spring. However, with so few houses on the market, this winter is an ideal time to shine, with very little competition.

HALF A CENTURY OF WINTER FUN

SANDPOINT’S WINTER CARNIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 50TH YEAR!

"Eachyear, the goal behind the Winter Carnival is to promote economic vitality in our region of Idaho and to show off how amazing our local businesses are. We hope the public takes away a sense of magic and looks forward to exploring more next year,” states Keely Gray of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

2023 marks the Winter Carnival’s 50th year, and according to Keely, they are hoping to make the 50th Parade “the biggest little hometown parade of all, with a record number of floats!”

When it comes to what many in the community most look forward to during the 10-day event, it is two-fold, according to Keely. “As this is usually a slow time for our area, our businesses appreciate the bump in tourism. As a community member, I look forward to the kickoff event of the Parade and the after-party outside of Pend d’Oreille Winery. Schweitzer usually always has tubing and twilight skiing, which is always a hit.”

To stay up to date with all the happenings going on throughout the duration of the event, be sure to visit the chamber’s website and social media pages, where they encourage locals and tourists alike to get out and about in town to experience all the fun to be had. “It’s a fun excuse to celebrate how much we have to offer and gives our businesses time to

shine,” smiles Keely. “The goal is that there is something for everyone to choose from to enjoy the season.”

As for the highlight of the carnival, there are certainly just too many to count! “I think everyone has a different event they look forward to every year, but the K9 Keg Pull is one that is so unique and fun,” says Keely. “Who doesn’t love puppies!?”

The event could not be realized without the support of the community, both individuals and businesses alike. Though there are many, some of Sandpoint Winter Carnival’s tried-and-true partners over the years include: Eichardt’s Pub, Schweitzer Mountain, Pend d’Oreille Winery, 219 Lounge, Mickduff's, Ting Fiber internet (who is also the top sponsor and partner for 2023), the Downtown Shopping District and the City of Sandpoint.

“We hope our 50th is the best yet and everyone enjoys all Sandpoint has to offer,” shares Keely.

Mark your calendars for this year’s Winter Carnival, happening February 17 through 26. Additional details can be found online at Facebook.com/Chamber7B, SandpointWinterCarnival.com and SandpointChamber.org/entertainment-events.

For the Love of Snow in Sandpoint

fact

Some people avoid the cold winter precipitation that collects several feet deep on the ground. But in Sandpoint, not only do people tolerate the snow, they celebrate it. Every year in the month of February, there is a week dedicated to cherishing the winter months. All events reflect the embrace of our northern living lifestyle in every way possible, such as a warm glowing light parade, flying snow and beer at the K9 Keg Pull, ski races, and more. When the Winter Carnival started in 1964, others took notice and joined the giant winter party in Sandpoint. In 1965, around 400 college students from about a dozen schools gathered in Sandpoint to compete in ski races at the new ski resort called Schweitzer. In these early winter carnivals, other events included the Christmas Tree Bonfire at City Beach, snowmobile races, and snow sculptures. This town knows how to have a good time in rain, snow, or sunshine.
