Summer may be short in Bonner and Boundary Counties, but the last 30 days have brought on the heat.

Sellers are lowering temperatures on pricing, and buyers are striking deals before the forecast shifts again.

More homes and land have sold compared to the previous month, but sellers should pack a little patience closings are taking about a month longer to reach the nish line.

Home sales volume climbed 20% over the previous month. The median home price nudged up to $650,000, a modest 2% rise. Mortgage rates remain steady, and homes are closing in about 96 days. Cash buyers made up 36% of sales, and VA loan activity continues to rise. Veterans — congratulations on your new homes and Thank You for your service to our country.

The land market also saw a change in weather patterns. More parcels sold, but lowerpriced offerings pulled the median down to $209,500, a 16% drop from the previous month. The silver lining? Lending options for land are expanding, including owner nancing. Half of last month’s land sales were funded by loans, and cash covered the remaining 50% of dirt deals.

FROM A SATELLITE VIEW Prices are holding on a gentle upward curve — not soaring, not storming. It’s high season for price reductions, and savvy buyers are engaging when the price is right. There’s plenty of ready money in the atmosphere. Sellers should watch the competition closely. Stay aware, stay prepared, and stay positioned — this is no time to be caught in a fog bank.

layna Reichl opened the first Barrel 33 in 2017, starting with six wine barrels and a stand at a farmers' market. Nine years later, her Sand Creek wine bar has grown into one of downtown Sandpoint's steady gathering spots, known for regional wine, craft beer, and a patio Tiki Bar. This month brings a new chapter: a full liquor license now gives Barrel 33 room to build out a craft cocktail program. Reichl and her husband, Manny, run the business together, with a third location already in the works for Post Falls in 2027.

Q. You recently received your liquor license, a big milestone. What new possibilities does that create for the business?

A. We've spent years building Barrel 33 around great wine and craft beer, and adding a full craft cocktail program allows us to offer a much more complete experience. We're making our cocktails with quality spirits, fresh ingredients, and house-made syrups and sours, while still keeping them approachable and fun. We've especially loved incorporating local flavors like huckleberry into the menu. Now there's truly something for everyone at the table.

Q. For guests who haven't visited yet, what do you want them to notice first when they walk in at Barrel 33?

Q. What can guests expect from the expanded drink menu, and what are you most excited to introduce?

A. I hope the first thing they notice is how comfortable and welcoming it feels. We like to call it "elevated chill." Great wine,

A. We've added classics like our premium margarita, mojito, whiskey sour, espresso martini, and Old Fashioned,

along with Barrel 33 creations like our Huckleberry Mule, Huckleberry Mai Tai, served in a tiki glass and a customer favorite, and Huckleberry Bourbon Smash, my personal favorite. We're using premium spirits and making components like our syrups and sour mix in-house. It's also nice that we can now serve Tiki drinks at our patio Tiki Bar. The Pina Colada is a must-try, made fresh with coconut cream and pineapple, alcohol free or with a float of rum.

Q. How do you approach selecting the wines, beers, ciders, and other beverages you pour at Barrel 33?

A. We look for quality products with a story behind them, and we especially love highlighting regional wineries, breweries, and producers whenever we can. We've built lasting friendships around this philosophy. That same approach now carries into our cocktail program too. Quality matters, but it should still feel approachable.

Q. Food is also part of the Barrel 33 experience. How is the menu designed to complement the drinks and keep guests settled in?

We've grown so much, from expanding our food and beverage offerings to adding craft cocktails and creating more events, but the heart of the business hasn't changed. Manny and I opened our first Barrel 33 in 2017, and it's incredible to look at how far this little idea has come.

We're currently working toward opening our third location in Post Falls in 2027. We also couldn't have made this transition without our incredible leadership team. Our Bar Manager, Jim Riley, has poured his heart into building an amazing craft cocktail menu that truly reflects the Barrel 33 experience. Alix Randall has also been instrumental in leading and supporting our team throughout this exciting transition. Their passion, creativity, and dedication have helped bring this next chapter of Barrel 33 to life.

A. The menu is designed around foods you want to share, snack on over a drink, or turn into a full meal. We focus on approachable food with a little Barrel 33 twist: shareables, elevated flatbreads, sandwiches, charcuterie and other dishes that pair naturally with wine, beer and cocktails. As we continue to grow, food is an area we're excited to keep expanding.

Q. From tastings to live music, how do events build the connection you want Barrel 33 to offer?

A. Events are a huge part of who we are. Throughout the year, we host live music, wine tastings, Paint & Sips, dance classes, and other experiences that give people a reason to gather.

andpoint's summer real estate rush has a second season.

September brings a different set of buyers to town, and their reasons rarely have much to do with lake days.

By the time school starts and Schweitzer begins looking toward winter, the market shifts. Fewer buyers are actively touring homes. Competition eases. There is more room to think through a decision instead of rushing one, and more time to ask the questions that get skipped in July.

Recent Redfin data for Sandpoint shows a median sale price of about $565,000, down 4% from a year earlier. Homes have been moving faster, averaging 53 days on market compared with 69 days last year, while 32 homes sold in May. For buyers still looking as summer winds down, the changing season creates opportunity. Sellers who have been on the market for several months tend to be more open to negotiating, and fewer competing buyers take some of the pressure out of the process.

Several factors tend to bring buyers toward a September closing.

First is timing around winter. Moving becomes more complicated once snow arrives, particularly for rural properties, steep driveways and homes outside town. Buyers hoping for an easier move often push to close and settle in before winter conditions, plows, and icy roads become part of the equation.

Second is relocation. Buyers who spent the summer researching Bonner County, visiting neighborhoods or watching listings often reach September ready to act. For families, the school year adds urgency. For retirees, remote workers, and other relocating buyers, the approaching winter provides its own reason to decide rather than wait another season.

Third is price flexibility. A seller who listed during the spring or early summer and remains on the market by September may be more willing to consider an offer. A listing price that held firm earlier in the season can become negotiable as the pool of active buyers changes.

Waterfront and recreational properties follow a different rhythm than homes in town. Buyers interested in Lake Pend Oreille, cabins, or second homes often spend months tracking a particular property or area. If a listing remains available after the busiest summer months, those buyers see an opening to revisit it.

In-town buyers around Sandpoint and Ponderay face different priorities. A family relocating for work often wants to get established while the school year is still relatively new. Other buyers simply prefer to finish moving before shorter days and winter weather arrive.

Financing also plays a role. Buyers who spent the summer watching mortgage rates may decide that waiting for a perfect borrowing environment is its own gamble. The calculation becomes less about predicting the market and more about the property itself: the monthly payment, the layout, the lot, the drive to work.

None of this means September buyers move carelessly. Inspections still happen. Financing still takes time. Contingencies still require attention.

What changes is the pressure. With fewer buyers competing for the same property, there is more room to evaluate the decision rather than react to someone else's offer.

For Bonner County sellers still active in September, the season is not necessarily over. Many buyers still looking have spent months narrowing down exactly what they want. They know the neighborhoods, their price range and their priorities. What they have been waiting for is enough room to make the right offer.

BANK GROWS A larger Ponderay home meets rising demand

year ago, the Bonner Community Food Bank discussed the need for more space. The organization hoped for a larger facility with greater storage, room for operations, and the capacity to serve more people across Bonner County.

That plan is no longer years away.

The food bank has purchased a facility at 900 Kootenai Cutoff Road in Ponderay, with the move expected to begin in October. If preparations stay on schedule, shoppers could begin receiving services there in November or December.

Ana Kampe of the Bonner Community Food Bank says the biggest changes over the past year have been the continued increase in demand and the move toward a much larger facility.

The food bank is currently serving approximately 3,100 households each month, compared with about 1,800 households per month in 2021.

That growth has placed added pressure on storage, food purchasing, distribution, and the network of volunteers and community partners that keeps the organization operating.

"Food insecurity can affect anyone," Kampe says. "A job loss, medical expense, rising costs, or a change in household circumstances can quickly make it difficult for someone to afford enough food."

The organization serves children, adults, seniors, working families, and individuals facing unexpected challenges.

Changes to SNAP benefits also brought a noticeable surge in new households. Before the suspension and reduction of benefits, the food bank averaged about one new household each day. During the suspension, that number rose to approximately six to eight new households per day.

The pace has since leveled off, but overall demand remains 8 percent higher than last year.

The organization's 2025 numbers show the scale of that work. During the year, Bonner Community Food Bank supported 41,191 neighbors and distributed 912,044 pounds of food.

Its grocery rescue program recovered 351,101 pounds, while volunteers contributed 14,614 hours. Those served included 10,872 children, 15,008 adults, and 15,311 seniors.

The Ponderay facility is intended to give the organization more room to respond.

The building itself is not new, but the food bank is currently upgrading it to better support its programs and operations. The additional space allows the food bank to store more food, increase capacity, and provide greater support to smaller food pantries elsewhere in the county. The location also brings an important change in accessibility. A SPOT bus stop sits directly across the street, placing the food bank on a public transportation route in a way it has not been before.

The larger building will also help the food bank expand its role as a resource for other organizations throughout Bonner County.

Partnerships remain a major part of that work. The food bank continues to work with the University of Idaho Organic Agriculture Research Center, helping connect locally grown agricultural resources with food assistance in the community.

Its Seed to Snack partnership with the Lake Pend Oreille School District continues to grow. Fresh produce donations help support the district's summer meal program and provide nutritious food to children during the summer months. Local backyard gardeners are encouraged to donate excess produce for children and families experiencing food insecurity.

The Priest River location continues to serve residents in western Bonner County and hosted a Veterans Stand Down event this year, connecting veterans with food and other community resources.

New partnerships are forming as well. A recent benefit concert at Blue Heron Cafe featuring Camden Morris brought additional support to the food bank, with organizers hoping the collaboration can become an annual event.

Executive Director Debbie Love also received wider community recognition this year when she was named the Finest Person in Sandpoint, an award determined by community voting.

For Kampe, some of the clearest examples of the food bank's impact come from individual conversations.

A shopper recently told her that the previous winter had been so difficult that they would have "not made it" without the organization's support.

"Those are the moments that remind us why this work matters," Kampe says.

"Food assistance can provide more than a bag of groceries. It can give someone enough breathing room to get through a difficult season."

That sense of connection extends to volunteers as well.

One longtime volunteer described receiving as much from each shift as they give.

"Believe me when I say that I get far more from the food bank than I give on my volunteer shifts. Not just from the other volunteers, but from our shoppers."

That community support will take center stage October 10 when Ending Hunger, Bite-by-Bite returns to the Bonner County Fairgrounds from 5 to 8 pm.

The annual fundraiser will feature small plates from local restaurants along with silent and live auctions, a paddle raise and new games. Participating restaurants currently include 113 Main, Baxter's, Beet and Basil, Flavors of Phoenicia, Marigold Bistro, Opa, Spuds Waterfront Grill, Sweet Lou's, The Bank, Ponderay Winery and The District, with additional participants still being confirmed.

General admission tickets are $45.

This year also introduces a $75 VIP ticket tied directly to the food bank's next chapter. VIP guests will be shuttled to the Ponderay facility before the main event, where board members provide a private tour and first look inside the building. Wine and charcuterie will be served before guests return to the fairgrounds for early entry. The experience gives supporters a chance to see firsthand where the organization is headed and what their support is helping make possible.

The food bank has set a $100,000 fundraising goal for the event, including sponsorships and ticket sales. The money will support ongoing food purchases, programs, and operating expenses, and help cover costs associated with preparing the building.

Several major projects still need funding. Roof repairs and parking lot paving are among the upcoming expenses, along with the cost of moving the food bank's walk-in coolers and freezers into the Ponderay facility.

Businesses can participate through sponsorships ranging from $250 to $10,000 or by donating items, services, gift certificates, experiences, or packages for the silent auction. Community members can attend the event, volunteer, donate food or funds, organize food drives, or contribute auction items.

Shelf-stable foods remain especially useful. Current needs include nut butters, canned or pouched meat, soups with pull-top lids, breakfast cereal, and other pantry staples. Monetary donations give the organization additional flexibility to purchase items when supplies run low.

For the Bonner Community Food Bank, the move to Ponderay is more than an address change. It reflects years of rising demand and community support that have let the organization keep pace.

Last year, a larger facility was still described as a long-term goal. This year, supporters attending the VIP portion of Ending Hunger, Bite-by-Bite will be able to walk through it themselves.

Tessa MacDougall, cheer is not a hobby on the

Being chosen as Athlete of the Month carries weight for her.

Cheer is not always treated as a sport, and MacDougall wants that to change. The dedication, the teamwork, the hours put in: all of it matches what any other athlete puts on the line.

This season, her growth has centered on leadership. Taking on the captain role meant learning that leading is more than giving direction: it means showing up, staying reliable, and helping teammates build confidence in themselves.

Before performances, MacDougall turns to her team. They circle up, hype each other, play music, and settle in together

before facing a crowd. At competitions, she also trades spirit pins with athletes from other schools, a small tradition that steadies the nerves before stepping onto the floor.

Her drive traces back to a torn ACL. Instead of ending things, the injury built patience and resilience, lessons she now carries into every practice and performance.

Her mother pushed her hardest and taught her not to quit.

When MacDougall wanted to walk away from cheer as a freshman, her mom refused to let her. Looking back, that persistence shaped who she has become.

MacDougall is now aiming for the collegiate level after graduation. This year, she wants to leave her team stronger than she found it. Her guiding belief: you can do anything you put your mind to.

Charter Academy returns to Sandpoint September 14, followed by a road trip to Columbia Falls September 15 and Moscow September 17.

Girls soccer follows a similar pace.

Sandpoint opens the month on the road at Lakeland September 3, hosts University September 8, then travels to Lewiston September 12. Moscow visits September 17, the Bulldogs head to Post Falls September 22, and Lake City comes to Sandpoint September 29.

Homecoming arrives October 2, when football hosts Moscow at Memorial Field. Senior Night follows October 16 against Lewiston. Later that month, Sandpoint hosts the IHSAA State Soccer Championships, October 22 through 24, bringing postseason soccer back to Sandpoint.

September asks a lot of each team. Conference races begin to take shape, lineups settle in, and the results from these weeks start to determine what each program will be playing for when October arrives.

5th Annual NAMIWalks

Far North Idaho October 3, 2026 NAMI Far North, the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, hosts its fifth annual NAMIWalks event at Matchwood Brewery on October 3, bringing Bonner and Boundary County residents together in support of mental health awareness close to home.

NAMIWalks ranks among the largest peer-to-peer mental health fundraising events in the country, and every dollar raised in Sandpoint stays local. NAMI Far North uses that support to fund education, advocacy, and free programs for individuals and families affected by mental illness, so no one navigates a diagnosis alone.

This year marks a major milestone. Sand Creek Connections, a new community-based recovery program in downtown Sandpoint, is Idaho's first data-driven psychosocial rehabilitation facility, serving adults living with anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, schizophrenia, and other serious mental health challenges.

The walk gathers participants for a morning of connection and community support, with proceeds keeping support groups, classes, and Community Forum Night accessible across the region. Individuals, teams, and businesses are welcome to register, sponsor, or join the volunteer walk team.

So, when another train rolled in from Montana, crossed the lake and passed through Sandpoint, most folks probably didn’t think much of it.

Only this one carried Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Presidents traveled by train then. Flying was still risky business, especially in wartime, and Roosevelt could move more easily and safely by rail. On this trip, he often inspected facilities while seated in an open automobile rather than repeatedly transferring in and out.

His trip was secret. It was just a special train quietly 40

moving west on the Northern Pacific toward Athol, where Roosevelt went to inspect the new Farragut Naval Training Station.

The train was ideal for Roosevelt’s September 17– October 1, 1942, secret inspection tour. He covered 8,754 miles and visited 26 military bases and defense plants, including Farragut on September 21. Newspapers and radio stations were ordered not to report his movements until he was safely back in Washington.

So, when FDR rolled through North Idaho in 1942, the presidential train wasn’t old-fashioned transportation. It was Air Force One before there was an Air Force One. Only later did Sandpoint folks learn who had passed through town.
