The Most Beautiful Time of Year THE CRISP FALL DAYS ARE UPON US, and it’s the time of year we start preparing for the cold winter months. But, in the meantime, now is the time to enjoy the autumn season and all the beauty that abounds during this time of year.
October. Here you will find the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most scenic roads in America, as well as the Biltmore Estate built by George Vanderbilt. Set on 8,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is America's largest home.
In this issue you’ll find some great ideas on how to spend the fall months with family and friends. From hiking in nature while taking in the beautiful fall foliage, to picking your own pumpkin from a local pumpkin patch or apples from that local orchard, this time of the year is unlike any other, so take advantage of it.
And no, we haven’t forgotten that football season is upon us, so we’ve compiled some great game-time snacks for you to try at home to satisfy those appetites while watching the big game.
With October comes the anticipation and excitement of Halloween. You’ll find some great area events marking the occasion, as well as creative ideas for making that oneof-a-kind costume for adults and children alike!
Fall … there’s nothing like it. Get out and enjoy all the season brings.

ne of the more common questions I get asked as a designer is how to mix metal finishes. And though it seems like a fairly straightforward question, it doesn’t really have a straightforward answer. The rule is typically to mix no more than three metal finishes in any given room, and even go so far as to say in any given home. However, something I strongly believe is that rules are meant to be broken! One of the coolest new trends in lighting and hardware is a matte black finish. And while this finish looks great all on its own, it also looks fantastic paired with a cool satin nickel or stainless steel finish, or even with a warmer brass finish. I’ve also paired black with weathered copper to fantastic effect, which looks great in more rustic or industrial interiors.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
When choosing new hardware for your kitchen, however, it can be tricky to pair new finishes with existing light fixtures or other elements. For cabinetry, one thing to keep in mind are your hinges. You might switch out your old boring shiny brass drawer pulls for sleek new stainless steel models, but if your hinges are exposed and stay the same shiny brass, the effect is lost and all of a sudden it looks like a bit of a mess instead of the modern new look you wanted. In this case, what I might do is either switch out the hinges too, or, if that’s not an option, replace the old pulls with updated brass pieces for a more modern look that still works with the existing hinges. When it comes to lighting, finish is very important. I don’t know if you’ve ever walked into a home and looked up at the ceiling to spy a gold and crystal chandelier proudly declaring

One of the coolest new trends in lighting and hardware is a matte black finish. that the house was built in 1987, but I sure have! Replacing light fixtures can have a huge impact on how your house looks. But choosing a finish can be tricky. One thing that might help you choose a finish is your door hardware. If you have satin nickel doorknobs, then you know a satin nickel fixture would look right at home in your house. Should you want to branch out and choose on oil-rubbed-bronze (ORB) fixture, go ahead! Just make sure that it’s not the only ORB element in the house, so it doesn’t look out of place. One thing I try to stay away from is specialty finishes. For example, in the early ‘90s there was a textured granite finish that was very popular for
light fixtures. This short-lived trend immediately dated any house that included this strange breed of light fixture, and the homeowners were then forced to replace it or simply ignore it once it went out of style. For that reason, I opt to go for classic metals and finishes. Oil-rubbed-bronze, patinaed brass and copper, satin nickel, stainless steel and simple black are fairly timeless and will stay up-todate looking for far longer than their trendier counterparts. You can generally combine any two to three of these in any given room and still have them looking great now and for years to come!

I
By Felicia Soleil, JD
n this column a few months ago, I wrote about creating a fun, fluid and flexible summertime schedule for children of two-home families. Now that school is back in session, you’ll want to maximize quality time together while within the parameters of the school schedule. However, be careful that your own parental needs don’t negatively impact their academic potential. “I don’t know how to do this. I’ve never done this before.” These are words I often hear as a mediator and lawyer when parties are considering separating prior to divorce. This can be an anxious time. It is one thing to work on disentangling your financial lives, it is another to disentangle your living situation. When considering a physical separation, whether for a trial period or as a definite first step toward divorce, a smooth transition actually begins with examining the level of trust between you and the other party. A consultation with a professional can be very helpful with understanding potential pitfalls and help with establishing ground rules for moving forward, but your trust level will inform whether you can separate with good faith and mutual understanding versus needing to make things more “legal” through written and signed agreements or court orders. Keeping your level of trust in mind, here are my top three things to consider for separation: 1. What can you afford? Depending on your financial circumstances, separating might be as cost-effective as establishing separate living and sleeping spaces in the family home or temporarily moving in with a family member or friend. Otherwise, one of you might opt to sign a short-term or longterm lease on a rental. If money is not an issue, you might choose to purchase a second home. Any of these options should be selected only after a careful examination of cash flow and budgets. The most common mistake I see in my practice is when one party hastily signs a long-term lease or purchases a second home, thereby taking on a hefty financial commitment prior to learning what any of the support obligations might be to (or from) the other spouse. The same can be said for hastily taking on a new vehicle payment at separation. Get informed about potential support obligations before assuming any other financial commitments so you don’t find yourself in a cash-flow dilemma later. (For instance, child

support is based on income, not on what is left over after your bills are paid.) 2. Once housing is determined, decide whether you will continue to operate out of joint bank accounts or begin separate accounts. Will each of you have enough money to meet your needs after housing, utilities, insurance, auto and other regular bills are paid? Establish basic ground rules for discretionary spending, major purchases, and debt acquisition and payments. Can you rely on each other to not waste precious funds through emotional spending during this time? Or would you benefit from a written, signed document that holds each of you more accountable in the event of a transgression? 3. If you have children, will they benefit more from a structured schedule or more free-flowing flexibility while everyone gets used to the new arrangements? Important factors to consider include proximity of each home to one another as well as to the children’s schools, minimizing the amount of time children will spend being transported, perhaps taking turns being the “onduty” parent if remaining in the same home or until a residential schedule can be established. Most importantly, establish the message you want to send to your children during this time. Steps toward physical separation should include clear, age-appropriate communication with your children, assuring them that although their living situation may look different, you are still a family. Of course, seeking guidance from a family therapist for what to include in these conversations is often wise. Will you make mistakes? Sure. It is normal to experience “two steps forward, one step back.” Change is hard, even if you want it. But if you work from your level of trust with the other party, establish clear ground rules and recognize when you need professional support, you can build a strong foundation for creating a smoother transition. Felicia Soleil is a family law attorney and mediator. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

Farm Tour 2019 KEY PENINSULA FARM COUNCIL INVITES THE COMMUNITY FOR TWO DAYS OF FAMILY FUN By Jillian Chandler | Photos Courtesy of Key Peninsula Farm Council
T
he Key Peninsula Farm Tour makes its way back Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6. Put on by the Key Peninsula Farm Council—which promotes existing farms, fosters agricultural education and works to preserve and grow the farming community in the Key Peninsula—the KP Farm Tour is the one time each year most farms are open to the public, as they are working.
New this year is not only a second day for some of the locations but an apple cider squeeze and farmers market at Volunteer Park in Lakebay. According to Leona, “There are as many highlights as there are visitors. For some it is the spark of interest in a child's eye as they get to pet a sheep or ride a horse perhaps for the first time; others it may be to learn how farms are working in harmony with nature in a sustainable fashion that nurtures our health as well as the ecosystem.”
2019 marks the 14th year of the Key Peninsula Farm Tour, which celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Key Peninsula, “encompassing everything from agricultural pursuits to environmental stewardship and educational opportunities surrounding both,” says Leona Lisa, president of the Key Peninsula Farm Council. This year the community has an opportunity to visit 11 locations where visitors can enjoy various activities, tours, food and music.
Be sure not to miss the 2019 Key Peninsula Farm Tour. For additional information as well as a map of participating venues and what they will be offering during the tour, visit KPFarmTour.com. “We on the Farm Council are truly grateful for the community support that has sustained us and kept us growing throughout the years—from each donation or grant to help cover our expenses to the visitors that make it worthwhile to the farmers—through whom we can share what makes the Key Peninsula the biggest little secret of Pierce County,” says Leona.
On Saturday, the Fiber Arts Festival will be held at the historic Longbranch Improvement Club, where world-class artists will be demonstrating their work inside, with a variety of vendors and community service organizations at the outside market, as well as antique tractor display, food and music.

By Jillian Chandler
" I’M BLESSED AND GRATEFUL THAT I’M HERE TODAY AND ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE STATISTICALLY VICTIMS OF THIS ABUSE AREN’T ABLE TO HOLD ON."
ig Harbor resident Danielle DeMott is making an impact here in Gig Harbor. Danielle, who works in the escrow department at Fidelity National Title and is also a model (and former flight attendant), is living a life dedicated to community service, being involved with nonprofits and raising money for various causes. “Anything I can do to help everyone I can,” she says. Danielle is doing this, and more, through her title as Ms. West Coast.
Pageant system. Danielle was crowned Ms. West Coast 2019—and today she is proud to announce that she was crowned for a second reign as Ms. West Coast 2020.
Though Danielle began her journey in pageantry at age 2, in 2018 she decided to participate in her first adult pageant, which would give her a voice to help other victims who are going through the same abuse she survived (narcissist/sociopath/psychopath abuse). She decided to reach out to her friend, Marlena Martin, who is the founder of the Women of Achievement pageant system, and made the commitment to compete. That year Danielle was crowned Ms. Elite Southern California 2018, which led her to connect with Terri Dingle, founder, and Christy-Anne Lopez, director and pageant coach, of Regency International
Along with the title of Ms. West Coast comes a lot of work. As Danielle says, “The title is a full-time job and brings a lot of responsibility.” Danielle’s role as Ms. West Coast is to empower and act as a role model for other women both young and adult, act as an advocate for humanitarian issues and be an ambassador and voice to affect positive change in the community.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Danielle’s pageant system is not based on outside appearance but on a beautiful heart/beautiful soul, intelligence, community service, elegance, poise, personality and philanthropy. It is these categories that the women are judged.
Her platform as Ms. West Coast is Narcissist/ Sociopath/Psychopath Awareness & Support. This is very personal subject for her, as she was in a truly unhealthy and traumatic relationship. “The pain, confusion and darkness almost forced me to take my

On October 5, Danielle will be showing her support by participating as a runway model and special guest at the fifth annual Lady 12 Fashion Show: Glitz and Glam. own life. I was alone and lost everything I worked for my entire life,” says Danielle. “I’m blessed and grateful that I’m here today and able to talk about it because statistically victims of this abuse aren’t able to hold on. We as survivors are each other’s shoulder, because we are the only ones that know exactly the confusion and pain of what we go through. No family, friend or therapist can help—only us.”
In her spare time, Danielle enjoys participating in adult co-ed kickball. She’s a fan of trivia, enjoys a good glass of wine, shopping the local farmers markets and creating woodwork projects in her wood shop. She is a nature lover and enjoys hiking and kayaking. Danielle is an avid sports fan too, and you’ll find her cheering from the stands at Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle Sounders and Seahawks games.
To help support others who have experienced—or are currently in—similar situations, Danielle created a worldwide Facebook page (Narcissist/Sociopath/Psychopath Awareness & Support) to help other victims. “I literally get private messages sporadically throughout day/ night from people that need help. And I answer each message myself, no matter what time it is.”
Other areas of interest include fashion, painting, art, comedy shows, live music, laser tag and bowling (at Ocean5) and breathing in the fresh air on the back of her boyfriend’s motorcycle.
Born and raised in Southern California, Danielle moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she lived for more than a decade. She relocated to Gig Harbor in July of 2018. Danielle shares that she became a single mother when her daughter was just 6 months old and raised her on her own ever since. “Today she is 23, married and just moved to Wyoming,” Danielle says proudly. “She and her hubby just bought their first house where they are living with their three rescue dogs.” Danielle says she is blessed to call Gig Harbor home, where she lives with her boyfriend and his little boy. “I love this small town. This community feels like family. It’s safe, quiet, with a lot of local events. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Danielle considers herself a very feminine woman but proves that she is much more than a pageant queen. She excels at many things many would deem “masculine.” From welding, flipping shingles on roofs, framing houses, landscaping and more, Danielle is not afraid to get her hands dirty. “I’m most passionate about bringing and leaving love, light and kindness into every footstep I take,” says Danielle. “Smiling is contagious, and I’d like to spread that kindness with everyone.” Her good works are not going unnoticed. Just recently she accepted the nomination for 2020 Woman of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Danielle is making a difference not only in the Gig Harbor community but across the nation. Her willingness to give of herself to help others is a reflection of the light that shines from within and is spread to those around her.

ustomer service, incredible care and compassion for their patients are at the forefront of Kitsap Audiology.
Owner Amy Becken, doctor of audiology, has been practicing in Bremerton for more than 26 years, having opened her office in January of 1993. She moved to Gig Harbor in 2006 and just recently opened her second location, having purchased Hear for Life Audiology this past month. “I am humbled and honored that Bill and Marilyn trust me and my team to continue on with their legacy,” says Dr. Amy. “I have always wanted to have a presence in the Gig Harbor community, and this is a perfect fit for my practice and goals to expand our knowledge and expertise to this community.” At both practices, patients will be treated to a warm and welcoming experience during their visit. Dr. Amy and her team provide all services for hearing healthcare needs, designing customized solutions for each and every patient who comes through their door. From complete hearing evaluations and hearing aid evaluations to hearing aid fittings and repairs, Kitsap Audiology provides exceptional care on a personal basis.

Dr. Amy was inspired to pursue her passion of audiology because of her father, who, at just 5 years old, lost his hearing to scarlet fever. “He was a lip reader, so he was able to live in a ‘hearing’ world,” according to Amy. She adds that her father retired from Keyport/Bangor after 34 years of service. Though both of her parents have passed, Dr. Amy attributes the success of her practice to them. “They were everything to me,” she says. Whether you’re in need of hearing aids for the first time or rely on customized ear plugs to preserve your hearing, the experienced staff will take the time to listen to your needs and concerns. No hearing issue is too large or small for Kitsap’s audiologists, and they’re eager to show you the path to healthy hearing. “We are proud to include veteran care,” says Dr. Amy. “My son Zachary is currently serving in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne,

and one of my audiologist’s husband is a ranger at JBLM and will also be deployed this month.” The Kitsap Audiology team is also proud to serve local police officers, firefighters and emergency services personnel. As Amy notes, her other son Alex is currently attending the Police Academy in Helena, Montana, to be a Montana Highway Patrol state trooper. When it comes to what Dr. Amy and the rest of the Kitsap Audiology team find most rewarding about the work they do, it is “being able to give the gift of hearing back to those who are hearing impaired,” adding, “Patients become our family.” If you or a loved one is experiencing hearing loss, Dr. Amy and the Kitsap Audiology team are ready to help you with your hearing needs and bring the joy of sound back into your lives.

GOLD MEDAL HAS SPECIAL MEANING FOR CANOEIST Teen paddler fulfills Olympic dream for founder of Gig Harbor racing team BY DAN AZNOFF PHOTOS COURTESY OF KATHLEEN NORTH AND CATHY KASPERBAUER
A
s she has done so many times before, Nevin Harrison paddled her way to past the finish line and held up one finger to signify her victory.
Only this triumph had a much larger significance. Her win in the women’s 200-meter individual event last month at the world championships in Szeged, Hungary, propelled Harrison to earn her a spot on the US Olympic team to represent her country next summer in the newest Olympic sport in Tokyo. Her journey to Japan began years ago on the calm waters of Western Washington, where the canoeist honed her skills as a member of the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team.
“We launched the club 17 years ago to give kids in this community the opportunity to dream big dreams in pursuit of the Olympic model of excellence,” said Alan Anderson, who founded the team with his own 11-year-old son and the first boy he saw walking along the waterfront. “When I finished my own competitive career, I turned my attention to my own son. He never had a choice,” he said with a smile. The original team quickly expanded to include Alyson Morse and Bryse Paffile, who were teenagers when they were introduced to the grueling sport. After more afternoons and cold nights at the

edge of the water than they wanted to admit, Anderson, holding his binoculars and stopwatch, firmly believes it has been worth the sacrifice of accepting his hectic personal schedule. Anderson competed in canoeing himself for more than 10 years, including his victory in the Adventure Race in Canada in 2001 and qualifying to race the world championships in Melbourne, Australia. He had high hopes for the local team that day on the dock but was hesitant that his dreams may have been too ambitious. Human-powered The team’s founder explained that canoe and
kayak racing is as popular in Europe as soccer. He stressed the importance of introducing young people to human-powered watercraft before they become teenagers when they no longer have the time or the capacity to “dream they can go on to achieve great things.”
School student’s spot on the Olympic team, her achievement represented the culmination of 17 years of dedicated effort by the coach of the team that has captured national championships in seven of the past eight years, Gig Harbor’s own Aaron Huston.
“I have no words right now,” the winner said as she came out of the water. “It’s so unreal. So much more than I ever thought.”
Harrison was not the only representative of the 50 teenagers on the Gig Harbor team to achieve personal bests in Hungary. Para-canoeist Mike McCallum set two personal bests on the water, while brothers Ryan and Jonathan Grady reached the finals in the 200-meter two-man canoe race and the semi-finals in the 1,000-meter competition.
After 17 years of competition at the highest level, the Gig Harbor contingent has captured the USA National Championship in seven of the past eight years as well as represented the United States in Junior and U23 regattas around the world.
Huston, the head coach of the Gig Harbor team, said he is especially proud of Harrison and what she has been able to accomplish.

“Nevin is a true high-performance athlete. Her dedication is exemplary,” said Huston. “It depends on the time of year. Some days she commutes from Seattle just for practice, while at other times she will stay in Gig Harbor for a few weeks at a time.”

Huston said each member of the racing team considers the squad their family. Individuals, he said, soon realize they are part of something much bigger than themselves. But the future Olympian’s success did not come without sacrifice. Harrison and the balance of the squad from Gig Harbor have nine scheduled water times every week in addition to three to five dryland workouts in the gym. “My job is to build support for these kids who are getting their shot at competing at the highest level,” said Anderson. “It’s exciting to have one of our own athletes poised to compete in the Olympics.” Prepared for life The founder of the team could not say enough about how Coach Huston prepares members of the team to compete in on the water and in life. Anderson praised the partnership he established with the head coach. “With him (Huston) coming in and taking over the head coaching position, his job is to get these kids ready for the next level, international competition, and my focus is on the kids.” In addition to the hours of dedicated leadership from their coach, Anderson said the success of the team would not have been possible without the unwavering support from parents and the entire Gig Harbor community. “Like all activities with young people, we’ve had our share of fundraisers,” Anderson said with a sigh and a smile. “But we have also had an incredible amount of (financial) support from civic groups.” The team’s head coach explained that the long-term plan the city had proposed for the waterfront included separate facilities for commercial fish operations and space for “people-powered craft.”
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
“We want to pay our fair share,” said Huston. “But it did not help our cause when the city council introduced the idea of kicking us out of our space just weeks before nationals. “We try to be an integral part of this community. Residents seem to be proud that we represent Gig Harbor.” The 2019-2020 season for the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team began anew on October 1. The new year, said Huston, holds the promise of more accomplishments and the possibility of adding to the team’s collection of titles and trophies. Huston hopes to have at least three other members of the Gig Harbor team qualify to compete in the Olympics next August. “We are eager to share the success we’ve had with our community,” said Huston. “People tend to smile when they see us on the water. “Our boats and the paddlers streaking across the bay are a pretty cool sight to watch.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer based in Mukilteo, Washington. ow a senior starter on the Peninsula High School football team, it almost didn’t happen for Nolan Casey. During his sophomore year, Nolan recalls the challenges of playing against competitors much bigger than him. It was such a grind that he nearly gave up. “I thought of quitting, but my coach talked to me and convinced me that quitting would be a mistake. Let’s just say, Coach was right,” he said.

IN HIS WORDS...
While Nolan excels on the football field, it’s on the wrestling mat where his abilities really stand out. He’s a four-year starter, placed 4th in state his sophomore year, 3rd his junior year, and will be chasing a state championship later this fall. “Some of my closest friends are on the team, but the challenge of wrestling is like nothing else. In no other sport can you beat up a kid and be cheered on the whole time,” he said. Nolan works equally as hard in the classroom, finishing out his junior year with a 3.9 GPA. He is currently considering a few schools and whether to further his wrestling career in the college ranks. He also already has a plan for what he’d like to do in his professional career. “I want to be an occupational therapist. This is because I enjoy helping others and thinking outside the box. Occupational therapy would set me up for just that.” Through his many experiences Nolan says one of the biggest life lessons he’s learned is to enjoy the opportunity he’s been given and make a memory today and not wait for tomorrow.

renden Rivera isn’t afraid of a little extra hard work. The Gig Harbor High School senior proves it as a first team all-league offensive lineman to go alongside a 3.8 GPA. He’s also part of the track team in the spring. Brenden has learned early in life that it takes that extra work to be successful in whatever you do. “One life lesson I’ve from coaches is that the process is greater than the product, and what I mean by that is the process, which is studying film, lifting weights and practicing, is more important than the product, which is a game,” he said. Brenden is currently taking College in the High School classes as well as Advanced Placement classes and is looking to continue playing football at a four-year university after he graduates in the spring. “I am interested in science and technology because I enjoy understanding how things
and working side by side with his teammates each week. “My favorite part about football is the team aspect. Going to battle with your teammates every Friday night isn’t like anything else in the world. Everyone on the team has a role and does that role to the best of their ability,” said Brenden. While not every play runs like it’s drawn up and not every game ends with a victory, Brenden says his team is focused on playing together and supporting each other as long as everyone puts forth their best effort. “Mistakes will be made, but as long as you know you gave it your all every play, you won’t let your teammates down.” As he looks to pursue football at the next level, Brenden knows that he’ll need to continue to keep up his strong work ethic to achieve his goals. “At the end of the day there’s always someone working harder than you, so you need to outwork them,” he said.

50 YEARS STRONG LOCAL BUSINESS REFLECTS ON ITS HISTORY INTERVIEW BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE BEACH BASKET
O
wning and operating your own business can bring about long hours and stress but also incredible triumphs and rewards. Much has changed in Gig Harbor over the past 50 years, but you’ll still find the iconic Beach Basket Gift Shop. We recently caught up with General Manager Kim Stokke to find out what it’s been like to have a family run business for half a century.
We began with a small store across from Finholm’s Market on North Harborview and soon outgrew that space. When the Austin-Erickson sawmill property came up for sale, we purchased that property on Harborview Drive. Our popularity grew and at one time we had five other stores in the Puget Sound region. To allow our owners (Julian and Leslie) to enjoy their retirement, we closed those locations to focus our energies on the Gift, Clothing and Christmas Shops in Gig Harbor and The Basket Nook in Tacoma.
How did the shop get started, how has it changed over time, and what it is like today?
What parts of Gig Harbor have changed in the 50 years you've been in business, and what have you noticed remains very much the same as when you opened?
My family moved to Gig Harbor from University Place in 1969. My parents thought that there was a need for more shopping options in Gig Harbor, so they decided to open a small gift shop featuring baskets, beach décor, greeting cards and other household items.

costs; creating an atmosphere that people want to shop in and then share with friends and family while continuing to provide personalized customer service and merchandise that is different and unique. People tell us that shopping in our store is like a treasure hunt. Do you feel that small businesses like yourself and others in Gig Harbor can continue to thrive in the area?
started school here there were two junior highs, one high school and three elementary schools, and no streetlights. There were no overpasses; you could cut across 16 to get to the other side of 16. So I would say growth and expansion, traffic and dealing with it is the largest change. The Gig Harbor North and Point Fosdick commercial and residential areas have provided convenience but also challenges to maintain that small-town feel and not become another indistinct strip-mall community. What has remained the same is the desires to have a small-town feel even with the growth and change. The beauty of Gig Harbor is the water, the trees and Mount Rainier, and the ability for our visitors to access those things. The people, the heritage and tradition are important too. What do you attribute to being able to run a small business for such a long time? Hard work, perseverance and not being afraid to try something new; owning our own property has also been important with rising business
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Yes I do. We have lost a lot of our downtown small businesses over the years due mainly to changes in shopping habits and greater availability of retail outlets. Sure, some have had health issues or retired, but for most, lack of business was the issue. We compete with a very fast-paced world, so people use online and one-stop shopping so much more. People’s time is valuable, so having those conveniences in a busy world is attractive. However, if you want to have a relationship, an experience, you shop and eat at those small businesses where people know your name. What are some of the daily challenges with running a family owned small business, and what are some of the biggest rewards? One of the largest challenges is separating family time from business time and being able to spend time together as a family without it ending up in a business conversation; when there are disagreements, working though them in a positive way so that sound business decisions can be made. This experience has provided a lot of joy in my life and allowed me to spend more time with my boys when they were younger. They were able to be with my husband and I after school instead of daycare. For me

personally, it has allowed me an outlet for my creativity, business sense and created friendships with employees and customers that have become like family. Where do you see the shop in the near future? At this time the daily operations are run by daughter Kim (62) and son Mike (60). They, along with their fabulous employees (one who has been with us 35 years and many over 15 years), work to provide an experience that longtime and new customers desire to return to for something fun and unique. Julian (84) and Leslie (83), who are retired, still have their hearts and hands in the business. So until Mike and Kim retire, on we go. Anything else you would like to add? We would like to thank those customers that helped us to remain in business for 50 years! We love that we are able to continue traditions that started many years ago. Grandchildren that came in with grandparents to pick out an ornament are now returning with their kids. Traditions and memories made that are priceless. Those stories are what make remaining in business for so many years and being able to share with the next generation so important to us!

THE ENVIRONMENT AND YOUR OVERALL HEALTH
The Wellness Wheel By Scot Fleshman, ARNP, FNP-BC Owner, Rainier Family Medicine
Y
ou may remember from previous month’s issues, the Wellness Wheel is the idea that a person’s health is comprised of multiple facets that each play a crucial role in overall wellness. Continuing our exploration of the Wellness Wheel, we will be diving into Environmental Health and discussing what it means to be environmentally healthy.
Aspects to consider regarding environmental health might be quality of air, water and land. In other words, how clean is the air we breathe, the water we drink/use and the land that surrounds us? Are there unusually high levels of pollutants in our air, such as with wildfire smoke? What are the levels from other sources of air pollution, such as smoke from wood-burning heat sources, tobacco smoke, industrial exhaust or vehicle emissions?
Simply put, environmental health is the interaction that we have with our surroundings and how those interactions impact us. Typically, the term “environment” evokes thoughts of natural settings, such as woodlands or beaches. While these are certainly aspects of environment, they are not the full measure. Our environment also includes our living and working spaces, as well as our community.
There is a known link between allergies and asthma, similarly, there is a link between asthma and air pollution. Increased exposure to allergens and air pollution correlates to an increased rate of asthma amongst individuals living or working in these environments and, for pregnant women, their unborn children. Likewise, persons who have asthma have an increased risk for exacerbations with exposure to irritants, such as allergens or air pollution. Reducing exposure to irritants is key. Avoiding prolonged time outside when

THE OVERALL HEALTH OF OUR ENVIRONMENT DOES CORRELATE TO OUR OVERALL HEALTH AS HUMANS. air quality is low or close to heavier sources of pollution, such as industrial areas or main roads. For individuals working in industrial areas, know what you are being exposed to through MSDS sheets and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Contaminants in water can cause a myriad of health problems, and safe drinking water is a dwindling commodity in many parts of the world. Pollutants in water might be those that are directly harmful to the human body, such as chemicals or contaminants that change the temperature, pH or nutrient balance of water, allowing for secondary pollutants such as algae blooms. Access to clean water is crucial to the health of all living things. Preserving water quality can be accomplished through conservation and reducing toxins introduced to waterways by utilizing smart practices of water treatment and reduction of contamination introduced by way of manufacturing and shipping. Impaired soil quality can occur through similar routes as water or air pollution, such as industrial contaminants or improper disposal of wastes. In fact, water or air pollution can directly lead to pollution of the soil with which polluted air or water come into contact. Soil contaminants can lead to ill health effects via direct exposure to soil or via the ingestion of produce grown in contaminated soil. Examples of adverse reactions from exposure to contaminated soil can vary widely from rash (resulting from skin contact) to irritation of gastrointestinal and/or respiratory tracts, and potentially more severe organ damage depending on the type of contaminants and duration of exposure. We can exhibit good environmental health indoors, as well. We can choose sustainable and reusable materials for building and everyday use,
as well as preserving the quality of our indoor environments. Indoor air quality is especially important if most of our time is spent inside. Maintaining good air quality inside can be accomplished through regular cleaning/changing of high-efficiency air filters, reducing present particulates and opting for non-toxic chemicals and cleaning supplies. Additionally, limiting the introduction of outdoor pollutants to our indoor environments, especially when pollution levels are high, limits our exposure to these toxins. The traditional school of thought regarding environmental health is that we establish a nonharmful relationship with the world around us. This is certainly a good perspective to take, however, in the ever-declining state of our natural world, I believe that a truly environmentally healthy individual will be taking steps to reverse the negative impacts that people and industry play on the environment. This may seem like a daunting task, but you are probably already doing some of these things without giving them much thought. Some simple ways to reduce our impact on our environment are: Recycle. Do not waste resources like water or electricity (turn lights off when not in use). Do not litter. Consider alternatives to burning wood for heat, reducing the emissions of greenhouse gasses.

The bottom line is, the overall health of our environment does correlate to our overall health as humans. If our surroundings are not optimal there will be an increase in related health issues and overall health-care costs. If you want to learn more about environmental health, there are numerous resources at your disposal. TECH NECK The posture of pain and dysfunction By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L
N
ot so long ago, we walked upright. Our eyes scanned our surroundings as we made our way through our environment, and our reflexes and observational skills were sharp. Recently, however, we have adopted a new posture and way of interacting with others—not so much in person, but through our devices. Add up the hours spent in our office jobs, driving, reading, playing video games, even cleaning and preparing meals, you will realize that we spend most of our waking day in a head-down position. The terms “text neck” and “tech neck” are familiar, and we can all agree, it is not our best look. It is responsible for cervical kyphosis (neck hump). The repercussions of spending hours in the headforward and chin-down position can result in more than just neck pain. In this posture we are less efficient at carrying our 8- to 13-pound head and limits neck range of motion. When our heads are flexed forward and down, our line of vision also becomes limited. Our brain receives light through our eyes and produces serotonin, which makes us alert and ready for complex information processing. Our brains were designed to turn on information processing centers as the daylight increases from when we wake up, and as the sunlight dims our brain prepares for rest and sleep by producing melatonin. Think about how foggy one feels when we are sleepy or when we spend too much time in a dimly lit environment. Light deprivation shuts down higher centers of learning and problemsolving.

Whole Person
Posture is to a body what proper scaffolding is to a skyscraper. The physics of carrying our heads and our shoulders affects how efficient we are at moving as we walk, sit to work and drive. Tech neck makes it easier to slouch and affects the efficiency of our breathing, sending less oxygen to our brain. It is infamous for creating those painful knots between our shoulder blades known as trigger points.

Post-Concussion Syndrome Parkinson’s Comprehensive Therapies Automobile Injuries Balance & Vertigo
Tech neck posture stresses our spinal cord (the tubular brain) as it was not meant to be stretched. We are compressing nerves that start from our neck that control movement and sensation in shoulders, arms and hands. Many patients who are referred to therapy or for orthopedic consults due to symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may be originating from cervical nerve compression, which is not only painful but can also diminish hand strength and dexterity. Carpal tunnel surgeries can fail when the origin of the problem is in the neck and not addressed first. If you are experiencing the consequences of tech neck, it’s important to know that you can reverse some of those symptoms by practicing good posture daily. An occupational therapist can provide sound therapeutic interventions that integrate all body systems with hands-on therapies including ergonomics, daily stretches and strengthening exercises. Even when surgery is recommended, pre-surgery occupational therapy can greatly improve outcomes and shorten downtime so you can get back to living life pain-free!

THE HEALING POWER OF LIGHT HOW FDA-APPROVED RED-LIGHT THERAPY MAY BE THE KEY IN TREATING PAIN AND NEUROPATHY BY AMANDA THOME, PT, DPT
D
o you suffer from pain or neuropathy? If you answered yes, you may be interested in learning how FDA-approved lowlevel light therapy can help your pain and neuropathy. Decades of research has gone into light therapy—it has been found that certain wavelengths of light within the red, blue and infrared bands are valuable to our body’s tissues. In fact, light therapy has been FDA approved for over 20 years to fight pain and increase circulation. Light therapy sessions are completely noninvasive and last for 20 minutes. Clients describe it feeling like a gentle warming sensation wherever the pads are placed. The effect of the light isn't just the warmth it produces, in fact, the light energy from the pads dilates the blood vessels locally, which causes an increase in circulation. This, combined with the warmth, often alleviates the client’s pain. Physiologically, the infrared aspects of light therapy trigger the body to release nitric oxide from hemoglobin and endothelial cells in the part of the body being treated. What you may not know is nitric oxide serves as a signaling molecule which allows the relaxation of smooth muscle cells located in arteries, veins and lymph vessels. The release of nitric oxide essentially opens up these areas in order to allow for increased circulation and thus aids in decreasing pain. The release of nitric

oxide has also been linked to angiogenesis or growing of more blood supply as well as being linked to improvement in nerve conduction. So what is the difference between lasers versus low-level light? Both contain diodes (which is a small light with two wires connected to a filament inside), generally made from silicon with certain minerals added in order to produce the various colors. In lasers, the diode is housed in a wellshaped area with a reflective lining that will most generally send only one wavelength of light. The result of this system is a narrow, concentrated beam of light that scatters when it hits the skin. Most low-level (cold) lasers have a total output of about 100mw. In low-level light therapy systems, such as those used in therapy clinics, there are dozens of diodes spread over the pads, and the output is over 17,000mw. This increase in power generally translates to increased nitric-oxide release and shorter treatment times. Another valuable difference between the two is the fact that low-level lasers are recommended to be used only under medical supervision in a clinic. Low-level light therapy, however, can be trialed in the clinic, and if it is a key part of your success in fighting neuropathy, acute or chronic pain from inflammation or other pathologies, you can purchase a unit to use at home.

hat is your lymphatic system? The simple definition is that it is the clear liquid, which surrounds all of the cells in your body. With the exception of your nails, hair, brain and cartilage, everything else is covered in lymph. And, it is your secondary circulatory system. It is colorless, and its primary purpose is to move cellular waste such as lactic acid, acetic acid, carbon dioxide, ammonia and urea from your body. It is made up of 90 percent water and 10 percent protein, hormones and cellular waste. Here are some other interesting and important facts about lymph and your lymphatic system: • You have more than 10 liters of lymphatic fluid in your body. • It maintains the balance of fluid between blood and tissues. • One third of the lymph nodes in your body are located in your neck, and you have over 600 lymph nodes throughout your body. • It is connected to your immune system via your gut. Did you know that 70 percent of your immune system comes from your gut? Lymph plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to fight infections from bacteria. • It promotes the absorption of fats and fatsoluble nutrients in your digestive system. • The thymus, spleen, tonsils and adenoids are part of your lymphatic system. There are numerous reasons why your lymphatic system may not function at its optimum. You can be born with a lymphatic problem that causes lymphedema; this is referred to as hereditary or primary lymphedema. It may also result from a variety of complex genetic conditions.
You can also develop lymphedema from complications related to a disease or injury. This is called secondary lymphedema and is a common side effect of cancer treatment. Autoimmune and inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, edema, fibromyalgia, MS, IBS and Crohn’s disease, certain skin conditions and allergies as well as chronic fatigue are also affected by your lymphatic system. And since your lymphatic system is connected to your immune system, anything that affects your immune system may also affect your lymphatic system. Lymphatic dysfunction is a chronic condition for most people; there are many options available to help you manage those affects and find relief. Some of those are exercise, compression stockings or sleeves, skin care, lymphatic massage and lymphatic reflexology.

Alzheimer’s disease impacts over 5 million Americans each year and is now the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. While some signs of aging are common milestones, catching warnings at their earliest onset can help families navigate the challenges of a memory disorder. Early on, individuals may exhibit occasional forgetfulness but are still able to function independently. As the disease progresses, a person may become more confused, have trouble remembering personal information and can struggle performing routine tasks. The following signs may mean that your loved one is experiencing the early stages of a potential memory disorder:

• Increased short-term memory loss and forgetfulness - A common early symptom of Alzheimer’s disease is difficulty remembering new information. Challenges remembering daily or weekly recurring activities are also potential indications of something more than typical forgetfulness. These signs of memory loss often increase over time, and you may find this person repeats themselves frequently or forgets critical information like the dosage for their medication or when to take it. • A shift in personality - If a person’s mood fluctuates depending on the time of day,

or they’re displaying odd behaviors like accusing others of doing or saying something inaccurate, or their tone of voice alters inconsistently, it could be an indication of memory-loss complications. • A change in hygiene - Is a loved one’s hair uncombed or are they constantly forgetting to brush their teeth? Are they no longer going to the barber or hair stylist with their usual regularity? These are indications that a person’s memory may be changing as it becomes harder to perform their routine personal tasks. If you notice signs of cognitive decline in your loved one, it may be time to escalate care and treatment. A good place to begin is an appointment with your loved one’s primary care provider. Fortunately, studies also show that with cognitive stimulation programs, individuals can strengthen and improve certain brain regions to delay or decrease the risk of dementia. These programs have been shown to help seniors improve their concentration and overall memory ability through creative and engaging activities. Today’s seniors have more options than ever when it comes to treating the effects of cognitive decline. Dedicated memory care programs are designed to care for those living with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders by keeping them active and engaged. MICRONEEDLING What is it and how can it transform my skin?

hat would you say if I told you there is a treatment that has been around for over 1000 years, is safe for all skin types, and uses your body’s own healing abilities to repair damaged skin tissue and turn back the hands of time? First used in 1905 to treat scars and hyperpigmentation, microneedling has come a long way and is now considered one of the best in-office treatments for acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and more. Read on to learn more! What is microneedling?
By Bri Williams, RN, BSN
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical, medical-grade treatment designed to enhance production of collagen and elastin, thus lessening the appearance of sun damage, acne scars, stretch marks and hyperpigmentation. In addition, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, giving the skin a healthier glow and fresh appearance. The procedure works well on all areas of the body and is most commonly performed on the face, neck/ chest and back of hands.
MICRONEEDLING HAS
The treatment includes creating thousands of microscopic punctures to the skin using a penlike device that has sterile needles in it. The needles penetrate to specific depths creating micro “injuries.” As a result, your body goes to work to “heal the wound,” and in the process new collagen and elastin are created. This helps to firm the skin and heal imperfections.

having the treatment completed. In general, it is approximately $300 to treat the face, and a series of three to four treatments (one month apart) is is most often recommended for initial therapy. Does microneedling hurt? Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area, making the procedure well tolerated by most. It is generally described as being slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. Is there any downtime or recovery after this treatment? You can expect to look a little red the first 24 hours after treatment (like a sunburn). You need to avoid any unprotected sun exposure to the treatment area for seven days after your treatment. Mild swelling and occasionally bruising can occur, and dryness/slight peeling is expected around day three. Most clients return to their normal activities on post treatment day one and find the recovery to be easy. Where can I have this treatment done? Microneedling should only be performed in a clinical office and by licensed professionals to avoid complications such as infection. It is important that your provider is knowledgeable about facial anatomy and the safety of providing minimally invasive treatments. When in the care of a trained and licensed professional, microneedling is considered a very safe treatment. To learn more about microneedling or to find out if this treatment can help address any skin concerns you have, consult with your aesthetic provider.

MAKING A FINANCIAL
WORLD OF DIFFERENCE One woman’s journey to help others, one budget at a time BY ALISON HENSLEE PHOTOS COURTESY OF KUMIKO LOVE
W
hen a person goes to college and gets a degree, they typically learn a great deal about their chosen field, hoping to find a good job, make a lot of money and live the perfect dream life. For one Spokane, Washington, woman though, going from point A to point B has already happened in her 30-some years, but with a fascinating, and life-changing, twist. Kumiko Love, an accredited financial counselor and the creator of The Budget Mom, was raised on a farm in Chewelah, Washington, and lived a normal farm-girl life. She grew up, went off to college where she obtained a business administration degree—majoring in finance and accounting and minoring in economics. She got a job right out of college with an independent financial company in Spokane and worked for seven years as an administrative assistant and accredited financial counselor, helping other people wisely spend and save their money. She also did traditional life things: got married and had a child. And then the not-so-planned life things: got a divorce and became sole financial provider for her then 2-year-old son, which was a challenge in itself, and then factor in substantial student loan debt, credit card debt and a new vehicle loan, all adding to her single mom level of stress. Miko found herself going to work feeling embarrassed because, as she puts it, “How am I supposed to tell these people how to manage their money when I can’t even manage my own?!” She had the knowledge, she knew the steps, but a long-time struggle with self-esteem issues made retail therapy a thing in her life, and it served as an antidote for her feeling of no self-worth. The more she struggled with that issue, the deeper in debt she went. Being a mom was so meaningful to her, Miko knew she had to take steps to work on her personal self-development so she could be the best parent to her son. The pivotal financial turning point happened when she finally faced her debt. Writing it all out on paper and seeing her real debt numbers—almost $78,000!—in black and white was all the motivation she needed.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Pulling from every bit of knowledge she had, Miko became her own best client. Debt reduction became her number one focus, and she challenged herself to try different budgets but was unable to find one that completely worked for her. Her solution? Dig through all the budgets that she had tried and pick out the pieces in each of them that had worked for her. Then Miko carefully compiled those pieces and rolled them together until she created a budget worksheet that finally worked for her. Her paycheck system allowed Miko to outline her spending based on the money she was going to earn, and then she always knew exactly where her money was going ahead of time. Miko found the new budget worked and did everything she could to stay on course, using tools like a vision board and colorful debt payoff trackers to keep track of every single dollar she put toward paying down her debt. Every line she colored in on her payoff trackers represented not only another goal met but also a lot of hard work. She whole-heartedly advocates using a visioning board to track one’s financial goals. Her first board, started way back in 2011, simply had a photo of a really nice backpack that she wanted to save up for. Now, literally every single piece of her financial life is on multiple visioning boards above her desk, and she marvels at how many financial “wishes” have already become realities—starting with that long-ago backpack!

Another thing that worked for Miko was following her own advice, “If you can’t reduce spending, you need to increase income.” After combing through and cutting out as much unnecessary spending from her monthly budget as she could and still coming up short, Miko then considered her options. She could go find an additional job, but then she would be putting her son in additional daycare, so there would be an extra expense. She weighed out that option and decided it wouldn’t be worth the money or time away from her son. So then Miko looked at her favorite hobbies, wondering if there was something that she loved to do that could bring in additional money. And so she decided to fine-tune her love of photography. After watching countless hours of YouTube videos and reading on the subject, she used that talent and found work as a real estate photographer to supplement her income. It was perfect because it was something she could do on her time off and take her son with her. She worked hard, stayed focused and scraped together every penny she could to go toward lowering those balances. She began to see progress but, deep down inside, she was bursting at the seams with what she was learning and with every accomplishment, every bill paid, every line colored in—Miko just wanted to shout her knowledge out to other single moms. She knew there were other moms out there who understood exactly where she was coming from and knew what it felt like to be in her shoes; women who could benefit from what she was learning to do the same thing: get out from under those mountains of debt. She wanted to share it with everyone! So one night, not able to stay quiet one second longer, Miko grabbed her computer and started typing. Her first post flowed into a steady stream of posts; she began sharing the tools she

was using: the colorful tracking charts, cash envelope system and her paycheck budget binder. Though her blog, newsletter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, even Amazon accounts, Miko shares her best tips, ideas and tools that have worked for her, and dedicates herself to holding true to the purpose that she believes she was put on earth—to do something great. Helping people is her passion, and Miko throws herself at it with all of her heart. Every bit of communication is answered personally by her and, now, her assistant. They have posted a video on Instagram every single day for a year-and-ahalf now. “Everything we do here, every single day, is we want to inspire hope,” Miko shares. She believes the most effective motivation for anyone is to invoke feeling, adding that “… every article we share or video we post is done with the thought, ‘Is this going to invoke feeling?’ Because without provoking feeling,
there’s not going to be action, and people take action because they feel something.” Miko has definitely evoked feeling. Her fans clamored for more, so she began offering free resources and marketing her tools: colorful cash envelopes and trackers, worksheets, planners and her Budget by Paycheck workbooks that are now being sold around the world. Miko was shocked when she went viral. Her fan base is growing rapidly—she adds about 1,000 followers per day, and she has nearly 65,000 subscribers on YouTube. Google “The Budget Mom” and you’ll find her story goes on for pages. She’s been featured on “Good Morning America” and other talk shows, her story told in endless articles, and currently she’s planning her first speaking event in Spokane Valley (October 23 at the CenterPlace Regional Event Center). “I had no idea The Budget Mom would ever be this big, that so many people wanted to

change their financial lives,” Miko says of her newfound status as a financial influencer, “but it helps me pursue my passion of helping people every day, which makes me happy!” When asked what makes her different than other financial bloggers, she believes there are two things that have made her successful: One, sharing her real numbers since day one. Miko believes in teaching from experience, not by example, so she’s completely transparent about her entire debt story. And two, having a personal connection with her fans. People are surprised when she responds to their correspondence, but that’s her way of making an impact, which she feels also keeps her relatable. Miko especially loves hearing how her advice helps people find their way out of debt, saving relationships and lives— because her advice works. Remember that $78,000 in debt she was buried under? Miko paid it off in full four years later, the bulk of it in eight months after

her Budget Mom business started growing. As of last year, she and her business are 100 percent debt-free. Her current goal? Saving enough money to buy her first home with cash. And yes, that means she’s still practicing what she preaches and living very frugally! Sometimes it’s challenging to make that sacrifice when you want something now, but Miko advocates the rewards that come from being a patient spender. Her goal of paying cash for a home will hopefully then allow her to travel and spend more time with her son, and without a mortgage to deal with, Miko can entertain the thought of retiring early. Miko’s biggest message to those struggling under a mountain of debt is to take that first small step and the next one and just continue to stick with it. She encourages people to keep their motivation in front of them, to not

lose heart at having to do without, especially because this isn’t going to be their permanent way of living. Per Miko’s own experience, the sacrifice you’re making today is going to be worth it when you are finally getting to live the life you really want and be able to do whatever you would like. She might be small in stature but Miko Love is making a really big impact in the world, generously dispensing her budgeting and living frugally knowledge so that others can live debt-free lives also, one carefully saved (and spent) penny at a time. Halloween At Home Creating your own costume
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

W
ith just weeks until Halloween, you, like many others, probably won’t start thinking about your costume until the last minute. You can always run to the big box store and grab something off the rack, but why spend the money when you probably have all you need for a unique getup laying around your house? Find your creative side by utilizing some of these common household items for a fun, goofy or spooky new look. The WAY back of the closet It’s likely you’ve got some outfits stashed away that are 20-plus years old (and likely even older at Grandma and Grandpa’s house). Dig out the floral tank tops, bellbottom or acid-wash jeans, and transport yourself back to a previous generation. Maybe Grandpa still has pinstripe suit and fedora for an easy mobster look. Old wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses that you don’t mind altering can pair with ghoulish makeup for zombie or vampire brides and prom dates. Kids love playing dress up, so why not make them look just as you did when you were 8 years old and “super cool.” Cardboard Many of us have packages shipped to our homes almost daily, and the stack of cardboard in the garage can quickly get out of control. Use your imagination, slap on some color and find hundreds of ways to utilize this light-weight accessory. Build armor, a sword or shield. Turn yourself into a tablet, wall calendar or TV screen. Kids can use large boxes with a cutout for their heads to become robots and adults, perhaps a box of wine? At the end of the night you can choose to keep the costume for another year or recycle it easily at a cost of roughly $0.

Bedsheets and pillowcases
Mimic your favorite TV/movie character
If you are really in a last-minute pinch, a white bedsheet and powdery make-up on your face is a quick ghost costume. If you want a scarier look, cover the sheet in fake blood and pretend you are a cadaver from the morgue. Sheets make great capes for little princesses and little super heroes, and instead of buying a mask from the store, create your own by cutting out some eye and mouth holes in an old pillowcase. Kids who want to hit every house on the block and then some might also consider using a pillowcase to haul all their candy, as regular buckets can easily overflow, and you can throw it over your shoulder when it gets heavy.
This might require a trip to the local thrift store but shouldn’t break the bank. Going as a character simply means finding everyday clothes that match their look. A brown bathrobe, shorts and a bowling ball and you’re easily transformed into The Dude; black suit, white shirt and black tie and your an agent from “Men in Black”; a lab coat, purple shirt, pink shorts and doctor’s bag and your little one is their favorite cartoon doctor. Re-watch your favorite movie or show, take a look at your character and find clothing and accessories that make you look as authentic as possible.

Mom’s makeup
Halloween doesn’t have to be expensive, and your creative costume made at home will catch more eyes and grab more comments than those bought at a store (and that you’ll probably see five of during your night). Figure out what you want to be and, before running out of the house, dig around in the closets, storage bins and attic to see what you can utilize for your unique look.
Maybe not her favorite lipsticks and eye shadows, but those ones that don’t get used as often can be very versatile for the look you are going for. Dark shades of eye shadow can create black eyes and bruises. Mascara can color in a beard to become jet black, and eyeliner can make cuts, scars or stitches. Bold lipstick colors will make you stand out, and nail polish can be wacky and mismatched for a clown or goofy character, or fit for a fairytale princess.

Your Fall Activities Bucket List
FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN AWAITS BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
he leaves are changing to hues of deep reds and golden yellows, and the days and nights have turned cool and crisp. Fall has arrived here in the Northwest, and with it an abundance of activities that are sure to bring smiles to everyone’s faces.
T
The autumn months may be a bit chilly, but these activities are sure to warm the hearts of every family member both young and old. As the leaves slowly make their way down to the ground, it calls for some yard cleanup. But instead of just raking up those leaves and throwing the piles into a garbage bag—the festive pumpkin trash bags are most certainly the way to go this time of the year—let the kids have some fun! There’s nothing like jumping into a big pile of leaves, throwing them in the air or at one another, and just lying in them and daydreaming the day away. Who needs snow angels when you can make leaf angels? And this makes for a prime time to snap some great action-packed photos of the kids. And Mom and Dad, don’t forget to join in the fun. All work and no play was never good for anyone.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
72
The many varieties and colors of the leaves can also make for a fun afternoon art project. Have the kids gather a dozen or so of their favorite leaves and let their imaginations soar as they create their own unique fall leaf art projects. I still remember placing a white piece of paper over the leaf, peeling the wrapper off of the crayon, then rubbing the crayon onto the paper to make the outline of the leaf and all of its veins and stem. You don’t have to look to your own backyard to enjoy the leaves. As the fall foliage could easily make the season one of the most rich and colorful of the year, take the family out for a walk in nature, or even a drive, to take in the sights that this season blesses us with. Looking for a little adventure? Rather than going to your local supermarket to pick out your pumpkins—whether they be for carving or cooking—plan a trip to a local you-pick pumpkin patch. Here the kids can roam around outdoors and in the fresh air and choose their very own unique pumpkin to carve just in time for Halloween. In addition, select your own pumpkins and other squash available for purchase to decorate your front porch or create an autumn centerpiece for your

dining room table. And don’t forget, grab a few extra for those pumpkin pies, baked pumpkin seeds, squash soups and more. And let the kids help in the meal preparation. There’s nothing like preparing meals, farm to table, with your family by your side. Another exciting, and tasty, outing is to head to that local apple orchard. Be sure to bring the wagon and get picking. Many orchards allow you to taste the different apple offerings so you can choose your favorites before picking. The kids are sure to get a workout running about, climbing ladders and picking the apples. As a treat, once you’ve arrived back at home, make caramel apples and let the kids decorate with candy. Make homemade apple chips and applesauce—what kid doesn’t love applesauce? And plan on preparing and canning some of the apples for those warm, delicious homemade Thanksgiving and Christmas pies. Your guests are sure to be impressed. Fall is the time for fields of sunflowers, corn mazes and haunted houses. Running through a corn maze, getting “lost” or finding oneself at a dead end, offers a thrill for most children. And as long as you go during daylight hours, it’s sure to leave them smiling once they make their way out. Most children love excitement, and a haunted house provides just that. Just be sure that the haunted house you enter is age appropriate for your child, as there’s no fun in having your child leave in tears. Many towns hold fall festivals and carnivals, where you can experience a little bit of everything “fall” including delicious fall foods to warm you up, autumn décor for sale, entertainment, hayrides and more. Get in the spirit and make sure to attend one and support your local community and businesses.

Many think of springtime when it comes to gardening. But the best time of the year to plant bulbs is in the fall, six to eight weeks before the first hard frost makes its appearance. Bundle up the kiddos, break out the gardening gloves and tools, and make an afternoon of fun which all will be rewarded in the spring with a yard full of beautiful, colorful tulips and daffodils. The kids are sure to be proud of the part they played when they see the first blooms of spring.

IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON TIME TO GET COOKIN’ - BY TROY LOUIS CHANDLER -
Fall is here, and it’s that time of year most everyone has been anticipating all year—football season. And what’s better than watching the game with friends and family than with some great food to satisfy your hunger for the game. I have to admit, I’m not the biggest football fan, but I do enjoy cooking up my family’s favorite football snacks (I’m a chef, so it’s kind of expected of me) while they enjoy the game in the other room. Below you will find several of my easy-tomake football favorites. You’ll enjoy them so much, you might forget about the big game all together! Now get cooking!
SLOW-COOKED PULLED PORK SLIDERS In your favorite crock pot, InstaPot, Dutch oven or cast-iron pot, braise pork shoulder until fork tender with cumin, chili powder and a touch of liquid smoke. Reduce or remove liquid and combine shredded pork with your best barbecue sauce. Serve with grain mustard and chopped pickles on slider buns.
BEST BREAD AND CHEESE BOWL Carve out a fresh sourdough bread bowl, saving the top and "guts." Mix the following ingredients and stuff the bread bowl, replacing the top and using bread "guts" as dipping vessels. Here’s how we do it: one pack Boursin cheese, 1/2 pound shredded white cheddar; juice of one lemon; juice of one orange; two chipotle peppers with adobo sauce, minced; three garlic cloves, minced; and a 1/4 cup honey. This recipe will create two to four bread bowls, depending on size. You can also substitute mini dinner rolls for smaller servings if you plan on having a lot of company.
MINI FISH TACOS WITH COLESLAW Purchase your favorite mini corn taco skins and fish. Mahi-mahi (dorado) is an amazing choice, but your favorite fish will do. Grill or deep fry the tortillas and grill the fish. Then use this amazing coleslaw recipe and garnishes to make the best fish tacos on the planet, or at least in your cul de sac. You’ll need one part rice wine vinegar and one part sugar. Bring to just a boil and turn off. Cool and set aside. Then mix your concoction with your slaw to blow the minds of your guests. You can also add a touch of mayo for a creamier slaw. You're welcome.

BIG BOY BITES Man up boys, here we go. I have to add that most women can out hot pepper us, but shhh .... Split jalapeños in half removing seeds and ribs. Add a one-ounce piece of smoked gouda cheese to each half, then wrap the pepper in prosciutto (or bacon). Bake at 350° for six to eight minutes. Your taste buds will be sizzling and your mind blown after indulging in one of these spicy, savory bites.
DASTARDLY DIRTY DEVILED EGGS This is a unique take on an all-time classic. Peel and cut chilled hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise (bring eggs and water to a light boil for 11 minutes, then run under cold water or chill in the refrigerator until cold). In a bowl or food processor, blend the yolks with avocado, mayo, minced pickles, and salt and pepper to taste. When creamy, pipe mixture (or spoon) back into egg whites. Garnish with smoked paprika and bacon bits.
BIG GAME CHARCUTERIE BOARD Now, you can stick to the basics of salami, cheese and crackers, but why would you do that when the internet is now filled with farm-raised “wild” game that you can easily purchase online? Grab a large wood cutting board and fill it up with fun items like bacon-wrapped grilled antelope, elk sausage and venison meatballs glazed with barbecue sauce. To that add a few of your favorite cheeses, a sliced French baguette, specialty wine jams and some fancy mustards and pickles, and you will have the best meat and cheese platter in your football bracket!

ASHEVILLE Gilded Age culture and fall foliage on the Blue Ridge Parkway By Marguerite Cleveland Photos Courtesy of Explore Asheville and The Biltmore Company
N
ot many people realize that one of the founders of modern forestry in the United States was a Vanderbilt. The Biltmore Estate was cobbled together from George Vanderbilt’s land purchases in the Asheville area. Many were farms where the land was considered worn out. Fredrick Law Olmsted (design Central Park), who was hired to landscape the property, was not impressed with the 125,000 acres which were in a deplorable condition. Vanderbilt hired Gifford Pinchot to manage the forests on the estate, and he later became the first Chief of the United States Forest Service. Later on, the first school of forestry in North America, The Biltmore School of Forestry, was operated on the estate by Dr. Carl A. Schenck. After Vanderbilt’s death, around 86,000 acres of the estate were sold to the United State Forest Service to establish the Pisgah National Forest, one of the first in the Eastern United States. Most fall foliage destinations tend to have a peak week when hordes of people descend upon the area to see autumn flora at its best. The wooded areas surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, and the forests observed from the Blue Ridge Parkway have one of the longest and most diverse fall foliage seasons in the world. The Biltmore Estate With its history of forestry, the Biltmore Estate is the perfect destination for a fall foliage trip, and you can stay right on the estate. The Village Hotel provides a casual-style stay and is close to the winery and other shopping and dining activities. But for a true Biltmore experience you need to step it up and stay at the Inn on Biltmore

Estate. It is luxurious with interiors that make you feel like you are a guest in the Biltmore House. Enjoy rooms decorated like Gilded Age visitors enjoyed. The staff is outstanding and provides warm Southern hospitality without any stuffiness. There are a variety of dining options on the estate with the ingredients for many dishes grown or produced right on the estate. During your stay in Asheville, make sure to allow plenty of time to tour and experience all the estate has to offer. Your admission includes a selfguided tour of the historic Biltmore House and access to the grounds. There are a variety of optional add-on tours. The Audio Guide to Biltmore is well worth the $15 extra cost with its music and description of what life was like when the home was first built. The Legacy of the Land Tour gets you behind the scenes on the estate while you learn more about the history of the land. Visit the Outdoor Adventure Center to book fun outside activities, many you won’t see anywhere else. Enjoy a ride with Belgian draft horses pulling an elegant carriage, or try your hand at falconry and learn how to interact with a hawk or falcon. You may have been to many wineries before, but the Biltmore Winery is really special with its self-guided tour and many tasting options. The winery is the

With fall foliage peaking in October, the parkway is a wonder to behold. It meanders for a total of 469 miles following the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains leading to stunning views. The parkway utilizes a milepost system which makes it easier to track where you are on the parkway. Before heading out to the parkway, grab a picnic lunch from the WellBred Bakery & Café, which prides itself on fresh sandwiches, salads and bakery treats. Heading south from Asheville on the parkway, stop at milepost 382 and tour the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center for information, maps and a movie about the area. Here you’ll also find the Folk Art Center for demonstrations and eclectic local folk art. Plan to hike Mount Pisgah while exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mount Pisgah in the distance. The estate once stretched all the way to this peak. The 5,721-foot summit can be accessed from milepost 407.6 on the parkway. The moderate 2.6-mile round-trip trail will take you to an observation platform which affords stunning views of the mountains and, on a clear day, Asheville is visible. Asheville Allow a day to spend time exploring Asheville, a funky mountain city with a rich architectural history. Its many Art Deco, Beaux Arts and Neoclassical buildings are now home to locally owned shops, more than 30 art galleries and an exciting culinary scene. Throw in some live music and you have a special destination which will draw you back again and again. A fun way to tour the city is to experience the Urban Trail, which is essentially the city’s outdoor history museum. The tour is 1.7-miles long and has 30 stations that highlight the city’s historic and cultural stories. At each stop you will find a bronze plaque and a piece of art. Learn about notable characters, many whom you may recognize such as Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and O. Henry. Start at the front of Pack Place on Asheville’s Park Square for Plaque #1, “Walk Into History.” Set aside a couple of hours to complete the tour while allowing plenty of time to have lunch and shop. Another unique Asheville activity is to book a foraging tour with No Taste Like Home. This interesting tour will take you out into the forests near Asheville to forage 12 to15 edibles. It also includes a cooking

demonstration and tasting. Later head to a local restaurant to enjoy an appetizer made from what you foraged. Three days before the tour you will receive an email with your meeting location based on the weather and what foods are available to forage. For a truly spectacular meal, dine at Vue 1913 in the historic Omni Grove Park Inn. This is a AAA Four Diamond Restaurant and consistent winner of the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. The menu is a haute cuisine take on Southern favorites with plenty of rustic, local ingredients. With beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this Art-Deco dining room is stunning. It is well worth the splurge. Fall is a peak time to visit the Asheville area, so plan accordingly and book reservations not only for lodging but also for restaurants and activities. If possible, plan to visit on weekdays when you will experience less people. The Explore Asheville website is an excellent tool to plan your visit. There are many posts that highlight local small businesses and the people that make Asheville such a great place to visit. Celebrating 10 Years of Fall Family Fun Scarecrow Festival returns to Gig Harbor BY JILLIAN CHANDLER PHOTO BY CHRISY DORSEY PHOTOGRAPHY
FALL HAS ARRIVED HERE IN GIG HARBOR, which means the annual Scarecrow Festival makes its way back to Sehmel Homestead Park Saturday, October 5 from 10am to 4pm. “This being our 10th year, we are really going to bring the fun as we welcome fall,” says Chuck Cuzzetto, marketing specialist for Peninsula Metropolitan Park District. “We really want folks to experience fall in the Pacific Northwest, and this year’s event is sure to achieve just that.” The highlight of the festival each year is the marketplace with its harvest feel and featuring more than 60 vendors. Find kids crafts and activities, and the addition of a hot cocoa and a cider garden, with proceeds to benefit PenMet Parks Teen Advisory Committee. There will be a petting zoo, hosted by Christa Camps, hayrides, food trucks and more. The pumpkin launch, with proceeds benefiting the PenMet Parks Scholarship fund, is always a hit, and the scarecrow building contest offers great prizes for families, community groups and businesses. To enter the scarecrow competition, visit PenMetParks.org or email info@penmetparks.org. This year local Eagle Scouts are building the carnival booths, and as Chuck says, “The booths are like something right out of a movie, and every family will receive a prize.” There will also be a youth stage at this year’s event for kids to “boogie down!” “What really make this event a hit with the community is the community itself,” smiles Chuck. “The way everyone comes together to enjoy themselves is just so special to our district. We can’t go anywhere without someone saying how excited they are for Scarecrow Festival every year. It’s like music to my ears!”
