Tricks of the Trade
SIMPLE DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR HOME BY DEANN HAMMER, BROADWAY DESIGN
D
esign is personal. However, in my 30 years of designing homes, I have found some common details that work well for almost every home. These simple tricks will make your home glamorous.
low and, unfortunately, is the size most stores sell. Look for the larger sizes online. Neutrals work best. If you can’t find a taller height, use a drapery curtain with a shower liner under it. Shower rings will hold both the curtain and the liner on the rod together.
1. Curtains take the edge off and create warmth—literally and figuratively. Solid fabric or textures are best. Buy the best material you can, and make sure it is lined. Hang your curtains as tall as you can, and don’t let them float more than .25 inches off the floor. I prefer to hang the rod directly between the top of the window trim and the ceiling. It will absolutely make your room feel larger. Double curtain panels on each side of the window, in most cases, for fullness. Place them no more than 6 inches overlapping the actual window.
3. Accent walls. Go for neutrals, and keep them in the same color family as your overall wall color. Look for a shade at least three to four colors darker than your base color. I paint accents in one wall in a narrow hall, or at the end of the hall, to create dimension. I use them on fireplace walls, headboard walls, the back wall of a kitchen, and on one stair wall as a backdrop for art.
2. Tall shower curtains make an impact. Buy the tallest ones you can. Eighty-four or 96 inches is best. Seventy-two inches is too
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
4. Lighting. Wall sconces, chandeliers and under-cabinet lighting will add dimension and warmth to your home. Your lamps are the “jewelry” of your house, so spend the money and buy the best. Target lamps look cheap. Take your time and buy something well made with a shade that has a texture and color like black or linen, not stark white.

Decorating doesn’t have to be tricky. 5. Area rugs come in all shapes and prices. Polypropylene carpets are inexpensive, but they are mostly very flat and do not feel good under foot unless they have a nice wool and rubber pad under them. If you buy one, make sure it isn’t shiny.
don’t think you are saving money by spending less assuming your pet will ruin it. You will just be replacing it and buying it twice. After all, sheep live in the dirt and muck, and their natural oils repel most things.
Stay away from “art silk.” It looks beautiful, and feels soft, but you will never get it clean. If you buy a cheap wool rug, you can bet it is going to shed forever and might not be the best bargain after all.
6. Invest in a few pieces of large sized art: 4’ x 4’, 3’ x 6’ or 5’x5’ are great sizes. Too many small wall hangings make a room look busy and less sophisticated. You can purchase large framed custom art from LeftBankArt.com at super prices through your local interior designer.
Handmade carpets are the best investment. They will last a lifetime. Better made carpets have longer carpet fibers and do not shed. They clean much easier than cheap ones, so
Decorating doesn’t have to be tricky. Trust your local design professional to help you make the best design decisions for the most artful and intelligent impact.

Timing is Everything HOW LONG WILL OUR DIVORCE TAKE?
A
By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator
long with “How much will this cost?” my clients’ most common question when starting a divorce is “How long will it take?” Of course, you probably already know the answer: “It depends.”
Here are several factors that influence timing: 1. Is the decision to divorce mutual, or is it primarily being driven by one party? 2. If there is a reluctant party, will they be encouraged to move forward more quickly and cooperatively by choosing a process that includes and supports them, such as mediation? Or will they become more stalwart and stalling, creating the need for implementing court deadlines? 3. If the decision is mutual, I encourage clients to work backward from when they would like to see themselves divorced. They should consider the following practical matters: • The availability of medical insurance after one party is removed from the other party’s plan through their employer. (Should any appointments or procedures be completed prior to changing insurance plans?) • The potential benefits of filing one more joint federal income tax return. (The qualifying date for eligibility is to still be technically married on December 31.) • The opportunity and affordability of separating residences. (Yes, you can still get divorced while living in the same house. And, if planning to sell or your house is already on the market for sale, you do not need to sell your house before you can get divorced.) • The affordability of separating bank accounts and common bills. (This can be done anytime you agree prior to divorce.) • Other events on the calendar, such as the school year, major holidays or important family events. (Most clients want to avoid having their divorce finalized on birthdays or anniversaries.) 4. Whether the decision is mutual or not, you should also consider the psychological and emotional readiness of each of you to finalize your divorce. While clients are very often more than ready emotionally to begin their separation and divorce
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
process, signing the final documents and having them filed with the court to conclude the divorce is often a different matter. Once all agreements have been reached, it is not uncommon for clients to be surprised by new emotions. Expecting relief, they are often challenged by unexpected feelings around finally reaching closure. The bottom line when considering the timing of your divorce hinges greatly on the process you choose. When I work with clients as a divorce mediator, we create a schedule that works around their timing needs. We set regular meetings, have an agenda for each meeting, and create an overall action plan that they can rely on and incorporate into the next few months of their lives. They know when they are filing their case to open it with the court, they have a general idea of when agreements can ultimately be reached, and the finalization of their divorce works around all the factors mentioned above. The pace is set by the clients. However, if hiring lawyers to litigate your divorce, the timing is usually controlled by each of the lawyer’s respective schedules, as well as the court’s schedule. You often have minimal control over the timing because you don’t know when your lawyer needs something from you, when the other lawyer might want something from you, and if anyone is procrastinating or simply too busy (lawyers included). Mandatory court deadlines often don’t kick in until several months into your case. If you are one who likes predictability and planning, litigating your divorce will sorely test your patience (among other things). If you are considering a separation or divorce, think about how you want the process to be incorporated into your life as you move forward. How important is timing to you and your spouse? Are you comfortable with putting the planning and the process into the hands of others, or do you prefer more predictability and control as you move forward? Timing in your divorce involves so much more than the date the court signs your divorce decree. Felicia Soleil is a family law attorney and mediator. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

H
ere in Gig Harbor is a small but fierce gem of a group called PEP-C (Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Coalition). It’s a group of approximately 40 individuals whose passion is to help prepare for a large disaster. They provide training, seminars, trade shows, lists and endless resources to us as a community in case such a disaster should hit. If you remember, a few years ago, an article came out about how the “big one” can hit any day, meaning, since we are located on the Cascadia Fault, Western Washington (Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia) will suffer severe disasters if or when it should happen. I’m not saying it will happen or that it won’t, but either way, one should be prepared for any type of disaster. Shouldn’t we be educated on how much water to have on hand for each family member and for how long? This is exactly the information PEP-C can provide to you. Their website provides a page with links/ resources for: family preparedness, 12-month E prep plan, Peninsula hazards, regional hazards, disaster plan maintenance, neighborhood preparedness, community preparedness, hot topics and while traveling. This group meets once a month in Gig Harbor at the Bujacich Fire Department (10222 Bujacich Road NW) conference room. Every other year the PEP-C group organizes and hosts a safety fair at Gig Harbor High School. There they have a day devoted to short classes on preparation in emergency/disaster-related events and booths with local businesses and providers. You can speak with these booths and instructors who take preparedness seriously and learn the services they provide in any situation. It’s a day where it can and will

open your eyes to how much we as individuals may not be as prepared as we think. The other day, one of the PEP-C members mentioned that when disaster strikes you have five minutes to get out of your home and flee—we are talking a major catastrophe. It got me thinking: Would I be able to pack what’s needed and won’t be missed for who knows how long for a family of four with pets? This same PEP-C member mentioned having a tote ready to go, well, actually three, kept at three different locations: one in the garage at home, one at work and another in your car. These totes should include: • A first aid kit (that can last for up to two weeks) • Water • Utility boots • Flashlight • Blankets • A battery-operated flashlight • Non-perishable food items • A can opener These are just a few that were mentioned. On the PEP-C website, you can find complete checklists, as these passionate individuals have done all the thinking for you. As citizens, it’s up to us to put it into effect at home. May I strongly emphasize that this does not need to be done over a day or weekend of buying all the needed items. Take your time and take baby steps. The awareness is what helps put the wheel into motion. Want to learn more? How about get more involved? Visit Pep-C.org.

he Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance once again presents the annual Winter Sip & Stroll. Scheduled for Saturday, February 8, noon to 4pm, participants are in for a treat as they enjoy an afternoon of tasting and sampling a delightful array of Northwest wines, brews, spirits, cider and small bites at the numerous Stroll Stops at participating businesses. “It’s a fun thing to do on a wintery Saturday afternoon,” says Josh Sherwin, special events coordinator for Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “In addition, participants have the opportunity to shop and support small businesses while tasting. And as a bonus, most participants almost always find or learn about a wonderful small business they didn’t even know about.” Of the 23 Stroll Stops, he says, four are new to the event: Woodland Sunrise, Gretchen Giese Artworks, Henry Earl Wine Estates Tasting Room and a new Edward Jones. “One of the first-time Stroll Stops is the new Edward Jones on Peacock Hill across the street from Anthony’s at Gig Harbor (our event sponsor),” says Josh. “This will be our first Stroll Stop not to offer alcohol at the event! Instead, they will have a nice Coffee and Cocoa Bar to sip and taste from. They will also have two food exhibitors, C&E Cakes—very popular at our Sip & Strolls—from Port Orchard for sweet tastes, and Harbor General Store for savory bites. And if that weren’t

enough, pianist Elijah Bossenbroek—who performs all over the world but is from Gig Harbor—will be performing live from 1 to 3pm. It will be a great stop to sit, relax, sip, taste and listen to the powerful modern classical piano music of Elijah Bossenbroek.” And there’s more live music, as the Harbor History Museum hosts Port Orchard’s Irish Band Wind in the Heather, who will be performing from 2 to 3:30pm in the lobby. “Participants are encouraged to visit our sponsor, Anthony’s at Gig Harbor, Edward Jones, the Harbor History Museum and the Gig Harbor BoatShop by riding the complimentary shuttles,” adds Josh. The Sip & Strolls (the autumn event is set for October 10) serve as fundraisers for the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor to help fund projects and activities taking place downtown. Check-in takes place at 7 Seas Brewing, which is also the place to find the popular wine store. Here you will find wines that you have tasted during the event, with bottles available for purchase until 5pm. Tickets can be purchased online at EventBrite.com and are priced $40 through February 7, and if still available, day-of tickets can be purchased for $45 either online or at the door.

“By day I run an entertainment business, and it has taught me to hate karaoke.” But upon calling the Tim Tebow Foundation, Ric changed his mind. Apparently pulling the karaoke would be a huge mistake. Why? Because Night to Shine is all about the spotlight. It is called, after all, Night to Shine.
AND BEING ACCEPTED AS A HOST BY THE FOUNDATION, RIC REALIZED HOW LARGE THE SCOPE OF THE EVENT REALLY WAS.
hen Ric Hansen received the 72-page pamphlet on how to put on the Night to Shine event from the Tim Tebow Foundation, the first thing he thought he would do without was the karaoke.
snow, which postponed the event for two weeks. The snowfall made it unsafe to hold such a large event. The postponement meant that a whole new set of volunteers needed to be scheduled. Considering there are several hundred volunteers, this was no easy task. Last year the event was hosted by Harbor Christian Center in the Boys and Girls Club. This year the church had moved to a high school, which can’t be rented for events. Hopefully there won’t be issues with snow, as the location has proved to be this year's largest challenge.
Night to Shine, a prom-like event held for disabled individuals from age 14 and up (last year’s oldest prom couple were in their 70s), draws attention to differences and celebrates them. Often those differences are what separates disabled communities from the rest of the group, leaving them with an undeserved sense of shame. At Night to Shine, every participant is prom king and queen, and there’s no shame in that!
Night to Shine hosts 200 participants. Each participant has a buddy who attends to their individual needs throughout the event. Twenty-seven teams survey every aspect of the event, from hair and makeup to relaxation rooms for the parents who take a much-needed break. There’s a red carpet team that crowns kings and queens. There is even a team that oversees bathroom attendants. All in all, there are 400 volunteers. This adds up to 600 people.
This year will be its second year running, and it hasn’t come without its obstacles. Last year’s obstacle was

be possible to host such a large event? The only building available was the YMCA, who thankfully was just as excited about the event as the volunteers. So, barring inclement weather, Night to Shine 2020 will be held on February 7 at 5pm. Ric, the organizer of the event, started it last year simply because “It made sense.” Reading about the event, Ric saw Night to Shine as an opportunity to show often unseen members of his community that God’s love goes far beyond the doors of the church. As the owner of an entertainment company, Ric ran across the Tim Tebow Foundation through his daily business activities. Originally, when thinking of Gig Harbor as a host for Night to Shine, Ric thought he would run the event just like any other party; that it would be as simple as getting a DJ and dancing. After applying and being accepted as a host by the foundation, Ric realized how large the scope of the event really was. His eyes were opened to the variety of needs that often bar disabled individuals from participating. For everyone to truly have a good time, there was a lot to be done! There was food and relaxation for the parents; sensory rooms for the overstimulated; a dance team that would facilitate fun on the floor. There were the easily forgotten needs like bathroom attendants and a buddy system. There were limos, bouquets and shoeshines. There was
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
hair to be done and makeup to perfect. There was food, for volunteers and participants. Most importantly, after all that, it was time to have fun! By the end of last year's Night to Shine, volunteers attested to how blessed they felt to have been a part of such a life-changing event. Night to Shine is just as fun for the volunteers to be a part of as it was to participate. The whole event was a labor of love that amounted to joy. By tearing down the veil between the disabled and the community, Night to Shine allows for people with special needs to connect to the greater community. To be loved. To be understood. To enjoy the spotlight for a bit. Night to Shine satisfies the basic human need to be seen. With last year’s eye-opening experience under his belt, Ric Hansen is looking forward to this year’s awesome karaoke. This year there will be a special team of super buddies that are specially trained for more advanced disabilities. This year’s event is especially marked by the incredible outpouring of community support, from local businesses to the return of a large percentage of volunteers. Ric has been blown away by the love Gig Harbor has shown to their disabled community, fostering empathy and community between an often-misunderstood group. Thank you, Gig Harbor, for loving your own. See you at this year’s Night to Shine!

ravery is a response to fear, not the absence of it. It’s shining a light in dark corners or opening doors to see what’s on the other side. Bravery is knocking down walls and jumping over fences. Bravery is facing pain, even when it’s on your knees. Bravery is holding the hand of the one you love, and then letting go. Bravery is a choice, but not one I think anyone should have to make. Regardless, I’m going to ask you to be brave. I’m going to ask you to look into a dark corner with me and shine a light. I’m going to ask you to listen to a sad story. I promise, there is a point. It’s hard to remember all their names, though I
wish I could. Suzanne Gwynn, an RN and the founder behind Ladybug House, does remember them. Whether they lived or they died, she remembers them all. I doubt she’ll ever forget. The memories of the children that she’s cared for, the life that they had, is a driving force behind her actions. Sick or well, a child is still a child. They still laugh and play. They make wishes to the stars seen outside their hospital window. They still dream of what they’ll be when they grow up. The little dimples in their fingers are just as sweet, and their smiles are just as genuine.
families. Anyone who has ever visited a loved one in the hospital is aware of how uncomfortable an extended stay can be. Unless home is within 30 minutes, children are not able to go home in between treatments. Many children facing lifechanging illness do not set foot outside of the hospital for more than a month over a two-year span. Families of the critically ill often camp out in the waiting room to be near the cries of their child in the night; to be present when the click of the doctor’s shoes resound down the hall bearing news.
It can be difficult for the families of a sick child, as I’m sure you can imagine. It’s difficult to face the reality that all those hopes for the future are at stake. Hospitals are built for the sick, not for their

while the other is at the bedside of their sick child. Brothers and sisters take turns visiting their sibling, as there are only two visitors allowed in the ICU at a time. When parents do receive a lifechanging prognosis, parents will often choose to continue to receive treatment until the very end (as I imagine we all would). Many children with life-changing illness meet their death in the hospital bed, surrounded by sterile machines. Death far from the warmth of their home, and the entirety of their family. Parents do have the choice to take their child home after a life-changing prognosis, forfeiting treatment. However, there is no hospice care available for terminally ill children. That is a dignity and support that is reserved solely for
adults. Parents are not only expected to figure out how to work the medical equipment on their own but are also dealt the heavy load of having to watch their child die. Once they do pass, parents are then expected to understand the ensuing course after death. For example, a parent might call the funeral home soon after their child dies. They then learn that funeral homes only accept an announcement of death by a medical professional. Police are then called, who then advise the calling of paramedics. Paramedics only legally announce death after attempting resuscitation. Resuscitation on a child that has been dead for hours. Death is finally announced; only then will the funeral home take the child.

All these details were patiently explained and recited by Suzanne; making it all the more apparent the ignorance that I, and many of us have, when faced with such a truly heartwrenching subject. A subject that goes unheard and unserved simply because of the human tendency to divert from pain. Thankfully there are people like Suzanne who don’t turn away. They do not shut down. They weep. Then they get up and do something about it. This is true bravery. Suzanne Gwynn has a dream. That dream is Ladybug House. Currently, it’s an organization that offers bereavement support. Bereavement support is a broad term meant to describe a variety of activities. For instance, it could mean
calling for an air-quality test for a child terminally ill with lung cancer. It could mean buying Christmas gifts. Bereavement support covers everything from a listening ear to connecting parents to social workers. However, Suzanne is looking to make Ladybug House into something more. She wants to make the nonprofit into a brick and mortar location; a place of respite. A place where terminally ill children can come and rest outside of the hospital. A place where the whole family can experience a sense of normalcy and emotional well-being—together. She hopes to build a home for children who are in need of critical or terminal care. A house where parents can choose to continue to receive medical care for their children, even to the point of death, so that the child dies surrounded by the people who love them. A nonprofit that aims to lighten the load that parents bear when facing the life-changing illnesses of their children. There will be two options when booking a room at the Ladybug house; both options provide full medical support. Families have the option to spend the time booked together; they can spend that time eating dinner together or talking. Maybe play some board games. The second option is for the sick child only to spend some time in a home-like setting while their caregivers take some time to recharge. Caregivers who live more than 30 minutes away
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
can take a weekend to go home, take a nap, and possibly even eat something not cooked by the hospital cafeteria. Ladybug House will be entirely free for families, supported by the greater community. Since the patients who come to Seattle Children's Hospital encompass the entirety of the Pacific Northwest, and not just Gig Harbor, there are a lot of people and resources available to provide support. Other such examples of similar organizations include the George Mark Children’s house in California, Ryan House in Arizona, and the Helen House in the United Kingdom. All the houses were built with the idea of providing palliative pediatric care to children and families on a very unique and challenging life journey. Let’s join Suzanne and staff in extending the family moments beyond the required visiting hours; to provide whole care that encompasses the mental and spiritual, not just the physical. “If we cannot add life to the days of the child, we can add life to their days.”

t would have been very easy for Daniela Rodriguez to give up on soccer. She’s been committed to the sport since a young age, having played for Harbor Premier since she was just 12 years old. Early in her freshman season at Peninsula High School, she was injured, which lead to knee surgery. She decided not to give up, rehabbed after surgery and made it back for her sophomore season. All was looking well until her junior year when another injury forced a second knee surgery. Still, Daniela refused to quit, and despite the pain and frustration of rehab, she found herself back with her teammates to finish out her senior season. “Coming back from these surgeries has taught me to fight for what I want and never give up on something I am passionate about,” she said. Even more remarkable was Daniela’s selection to First Team All-League—a huge accomplishment for someone coming back from two major surgeries. While self motivated, she also took some advice from her coaches and teammates during the tough times.

“One life lesson I have learned from my coaches and teammates is to fight for what I want and strive to be the best, day in and day out!” she said. Daniela acknowledges both her teammates and coaches have made a tremendous impact on who she is as a player and a person, and truly enjoyed the completion that soccer brought her. Daniela doesn’t only thrive on the field but in the classroom as well. She’s maintained her honor roll status throughout her time at Peninsula. She participates in several clubs including National Honor Society, Interact, and Environmental Club. After graduation, Daniela intends on taking her focus away from the soccer field and toward earning a college degree. She is currently looking at four-year colleges with an interest in pre-med. “I’m very interested in radiology. Ever since I was little, I was injury prone, and this sparked an interest in X-rays and MRIs,” she said. Daniela knows better than most that life doesn’t come easy, and having the right attitude and commitment to your goal will lead to great accomplishments in life.

or senior Tate McReynolds, competitive sports were a part of her life well before she ever stepped onto a playing field or court. From a very young age, Tate recalls family road trips from Gig Harbor to Eugene to go and watch the Oregon Ducks play. By first grade she was playing tee ball, basketball and soccer. Her family was also a big influence on building her competitive spirit. “I have a twin brother and an older brother, who both made sure I could throw spirals and run routes by the age of 8. My dad coached my basketball team up until eighth grade, and I learned to love the game because of him,” she said. Tate made the varsity team in both softball and basketball her freshman year and hasn’t looked back since, winning league, district and state titles in basketball and twice placing in the top eight in softball. Like all competitive athletes, she’s faced adversity and the ups and downs of each season, but she also had to overcome the loss of a close friend, Cooper, who lost his battle with cancer at just 14 years old. “I struggled a lot after Cooper passed away and turned to the one thing where I could escape from everything: basketball. I vowed to play every game and push myself every
practice for Cooper. My junior year, I worked harder than I ever had and earned a starting spot, also being a solid facilitator in games,” said Tate. Dealing with the grief of losing someone she considered a third brother is something Tate admits she still deals with today. “I wouldn’t necessarily say I overcame my challenge, but I’ve taken it and used it the best way possible—instead of playing for myself, I’m playing for Cooper,” she said. With graduation fast approaching, Tate has her eyes set on her final season of softball before turning her attention to college and beyond. She’s challenged herself by taking Advanced Placement and Honors classes while also spending three years learning sign language. Her preference is to attend the University of Utah and study film. “My dream is to have a career where I can share how I see the world, with the help of a camera. I love the outdoors, so being a freelance photographer or videographer for outdoor companies would be the job of a lifetime,” she said. Through athletics Tate has learned there’s always going to be highs and lows, things that work out and things that don’t, wins and losses—it’s just part of life. “I’ve learned how to celebrate the little things while keeping my eyes fixed on the bigger picture, and no matter what the scoreboard says, to always keep fighting,” she said.

NEW LEADER AT PENMET PARKS DOUG NELSON BRINGS BOTH EXPERIENCE, FRESH PERSPECTIVE BY ANNELI HARALSON | PHOTOS COURTESY OF PENMET PARKS

or the first time in nearly a year, Gig Harbor Peninsula’s park district has a permanent executive director. Doug Nelson, a native of Bainbridge Island and former recreation manager for the City of Federal Way, beat out three other parks directors vying for the job and took his place at the helm of PenMet Parks in December.
land has been purchased and plans are now underway to create indoor recreation opportunities, including a soccer field, flag football field, pickleball and tennis courts, a walking track and an indoor playground. Nelson says his prior 13 years of experience working in Federal Way’s community center will be helpful as this project moves forward. He began as a center supervisor in 2006 and was promoted to manager in 2014. Both positions, he says, allowed him to gain knowledge on the multiple aspects of running the center, from the back-end responsibilities of budgeting, staffing, programming and maintenance to the more public aspects such as customer service, partnering and fundraising. Most notably, Nelson played a key role in developing the financial responsibility of the facility, which initially struggled to meet initial projections.
Prior to Nelson’s hiring, consultant Glenn Akramoff had been acting director. The district’s last permanent director, Richard Fink II, left in March 2019 after holding the position for less than a year. The leadership transition comes at a time of “unprecedented growth” for the district, Maryellen “Missy” Hill, president of PenMet Parks Board of Directors told The News Tribune in November. PenMet Parks is currently working to create a 190,000-square-foot community recreation center on the former Performance Golf Center property on 14th Avenue NW. The

and focused our efforts on our best practices—what we were really the best at—and started to turn things around.” The Federal Way Community Center now has more than 4,500 members and sees approximately 1,500 people a day, John Hutton, Federal Way’s parks director, told the Federal Way Mirror. In addition to the planning of Gig Harbor’s community recreation center—$3.1 million of the PenMet Parks’ 2020 budget was allocated to designing the center, The News Tribune reports—the organization is also planning upgrades and improvement projects at Sehmel Homestead Park, Hales Passage Community Center, and the organization’s trail system. Nelson says the recreation program offerings will also continue to grow and that he wants to explore public outreach opportunities. A self-professed “fitness buff,” Nelson personally hopes to have face-toface involvement with the community through teaching classes. While at Federal Way, he taught everything from spinning classes to functional fitness and weightlifting. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but it turned out to be a really important part of my manager role,” he told the Federal Way Mirror in December about his time as an instructor. “It helped me connect with customers on a level that made them feel real comfortable talking with me, and we built a strong level of respect for one another versus if I was just the guy in the office.”

Looking to the future at PenMet, Nelson said he “can’t wait to find the right fit” for some type of instruction. “I am currently using some of my limited free time to get out and adventure through the trails and other parks, and I’d like to set up something where I meet PenMet residents at a local trail and we walk or ride together and have casual conversations about PenMet Parks. I think it sounds like a really cool idea—I hope the community will as well.” It was this passion for activity that first drew Nelson to the world of parks and recreation and is something he has carried with him through nearly 30 years of work in the field. Growing up on Bainbridge Island, Nelson spent his childhood hiking, camping and going on biking expeditions with his family. Later, as a business student at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), he pursued trail distance running, triathlons, rowing and bicycle racing. “When I was nearing graduation from PLU, I decided to earn a minor in exercise science due to my love of athletics, collegiate rowing and group exercise instruction,” he says. SPIRITUAL WELLNESS AND YOUR OVERALL HEALTH The Wellness Wheel
By Scot Fleshman, ARNP, FNP - BC Owner, Rainier Family Medicine
I
n this month’s segment on the Wellness Wheel, we discuss how spiritual health can impact overall wellness. The Wellness Wheel is the idea that a person’s health is comprised of multiple facets that each play a crucial role in overall wellness.
Spiritual health is no exception. We often ignore the things that we require for personal growth on a spiritual level. These things may be taking time out to center one’s self through meditation, reflection, prayer, or whatever means one might employ to foster spiritual growth. Some individuals might feed their spiritual health through religious practices, others may commune with nature. Still others may find this fulfillment through interpersonal relationships.
Spiritual health is, in-part, a collection of various aspects of the other areas of health that we have covered thus far in our Wellness Wheel series. This may seem like a strange statement, but my meaning will be clear by the end of this article. Spiritual wellness means to have a sense of purpose and self-worth; to be at peace with one’s self, as well as our environment and the people who share our surroundings. The spiritually healthy individual has a welldeveloped set of morals which provide a compass for daily life.
Regardless the method, promotion of spiritual health is key to the overall health of the individual, as well as the community. Individuals who are spiritually healthy tend to promote spiritual health in others, often through the positive attitude they project. Frequently, the spiritually healthy individual is found to be the person partaking in community activities, such as those that promote the betterment of others. From volunteer work and service to fellowship and mentoring, the individual promotes the spiritual health
As we focus intently on attempting to meet the demands of our fast-paced, connected world, we often tend to forget about nurturing our own health.

FOR YOUR VOTES!
Primary Healthcare for All Ages! WE ALL HAVE AREAS IN WHICH WE CAN IMPROVE OURSELVES, AND BEING ABLE TO IDENTIFY THESE IS NECESSARY FOR OUR GROWTH. of both self and others through community involvement. In some ways, spiritual health seems to be on the opposite end of the spectrum from physical health. In other ways, the similarities are quite remarkable. As mentioned previously, each individual component of our health is related to our overall health and are, therefore, inseparable. On one hand, physical health is measurable in so many ways: height, weight, blood pressure, visual acuity, conditioning and so on. Conversely, spiritual health is not quantifiable yet is still quite powerful. The lack of focus on spiritual health can undoubtedly lead to manifestations in physical health, although the physical symptoms are generally not easily identified from a medical standpoint. One way to promote spiritual health is to take part in activities that make us happy. There is a reciprocal relationship between mental and spiritual health. As we encourage our spiritual health, we often find that we are also promoting our mental health. Having a strong belief system helps us to stay grounded, thus sponsoring our mental well-being. Likewise, having a base set of values provides us with tools to apply in challenging situations when they arise. On the other end of this relationship, mental wellness provides us a capacity to receive new information that may influence our spiritual health. Financial health allows us to take our focus away from struggling for our basic needs. This allows us to concentrate on our higher-level needs and
the needs of others. When we find ourselves to be financially healthy, we are better able to give material resources where needed. An example of this is donating to causes in which we have strong beliefs, such as giving at church, donating to charities and offering help to those in need. The act of giving back not only benefits those to whom we are giving but also promotes our own spiritual wellness. Intellectual health is closely tied to spiritual health as well. Cultivating our intellectual curiosity helps us to expand our spiritual wellness through the exploration of our own beliefs, the beliefs of others, and other components that shape, alter and develop our spiritual health. This examination of aspects comprising our belief system allows us to choose how we interact with the components that comprise our spiritual health and modify our behaviors to better reflect our beliefs. In this series we have discussed the interactions of the various components of the Wellness Wheel and presented a variety of examples of how the different components are related. I hope this discussion has inspired you to assess how each component plays a role in your overall health. Perhaps you have identified some areas where you really excel, and maybe you have discovered some room for improvement. We all have areas in which we can improve ourselves, and being able to identify these is necessary for our growth. I hope that having even a slightly better understanding of the Wellness Wheel helps you on your own wellness journey.

Don’t put off wellness over out-of-pocket costs By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L
W
e all love choices, and health insurance plans are no exception. Most insured get their plans through their or their spouse’s employer, with two popular types of insurance plans being HMO (health maintenance organization) and PPO (preferred provider organization). The HMO plans are least expensive and have many exclusions (no massage, chiropractic or other holistic healthcare treatments). HMOs limit subscribers to an approved list of in-network providers while PPOs allow you to choose any “credentialed” provider (meaning they must be pre-approved to bill for their services). Additionally, PPOs don’t require a primary care physician (PCP) referral to a specialist (but still required for skilled therapies). PPO plans offer greater flexibility, and many cover things such as chiropractic, acupuncture and massage—all worth the out-of-pocket costs if you have a condition that responds well to those therapies. Choosing the plan that fits your needs best is the right one for you. In light of the many health-care services that are not covered by either type, it’s important to know which one covers more of the services you value and will pursue for your wellness. The following are highly effective wellness healthcare services that may or may not be covered by most insurance plans. Alternative care outof-pocket costs can be outweighed by positive outcomes with minimal or no harmful side effects as compared to the purely pharmacologic approach: • Acupuncture and reflexology • Aging-in-place consultations and life-care planning • Bariatric surgeries • Bi-Pap and C-Pap apnea machines • Brain-health coaching • Brain SPECT Scan (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography) • Chiropractic care
• Colonics • Dental implants (unlike dentures, they are longer lasting, natural looking, protect gums and lower jaw from erosion) • Durable medical equipment, disposables, supplements • Facial plastic and reconstructive surgeries • Fitness trainer • Functional medicine (may be an advanced registered nurse practitioner or naturopath) • Functional nutrition (a holistic and practical approach that is more effective than food pyramid-based diets) • Hyperbaric (oxygen) therapy • Integrative (alternative) naturopathic medicine • Marriage and family counseling • Massage therapy (may be covered only when provided by a chiropractic or skilled therapy clinic) • Oral appliances for TMJ and sleep apnea • Pulsed electro-magnetic field and infra-red treatments • Weight management treatment and nutritional supplements Yes, many of us are on tight budgets and many decline wellness treatments stating, “My insurance does not cover that so I can’t afford it.” Time lost from work and quality time with family due to illness costs more in the long run. But just imagine the potential of extending the quality of one’s life, improving our relationships, being around for grandchildren, and getting to check off more things on our bucket list all because we saw those out-of-pocket wellness costs as investments in our health and future. Don’t fear asking about payment plans or cash discounts. It’s up to each of us to love ourselves more than our insurance coverage provides. This is a great month to choose to love life with the best health care above and beyond our insurance plan. Don’t put off wellness over out-of-pocket costs, start loving yourself more than your insurance does and integrate your life today!

FLOSSING NOT GIVING YOU THE RESULTS YOU WANT? THE CAUSES AND FINDING THE RIGHT SOLUTION BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER
“I
floss and brush every day, but I’m the one with dental issues. My spouse does nothing, and he never has dental problems.”
Why would this be the case? Unfortunately, I hear this complaint quite often. There are a number of possible causes; some you can control, some you can’t control. Let’s talk about these issues and some solutions. Out of your control Bacteria that cause cavities or gum disease (some people have both issues) love a warm, moist, dark environment. That’s your mouth! The strength of your enamel is a hereditary issue. When I’m drilling to fix teeth, some people have enamel that’s hard as a rock; for others, it’s like butter. The “butter” type of enamel is not as resistant to the bacteria. In and out of your control Sharing bacteria with the baby: We’re not born with the populations of bacteria that cause gum disease or cavities. There’s a “window of infectivity” from the age of 6 months to 14 months, where babies acquire the bacterial populations from family members (or childhood friends). Sharing utensils and kissing babies on the mouth are two common ways to share bacteria. Another one: The baby drops a pacifier, mom picks it up, licks it and sticks it back into the baby’s mouth. Ugh! Medications: Medications that cause dry mouth or radiation treatment for cancer allows bacteria to stick to your teeth and cause decay. If you can improve your health and eliminate the medication(s), then this is in your control.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
54
Acid reflux: If you snore or possibly have sleep apnea, you can have silent acid reflux. Bacteria love an acidic environment. Devastation of your teeth will happen quickly if this issue isn’t addressed. Hereditarily, sleep apnea can run in families, and you can’t change this risk factor. However, weight gain or being overweight can increase the severity of sleep apnea. Fit people can also have sleep apnea, as can children. If your acid reflux is due strictly to diet, you can change your diet. In your control Pregnancy: “My pregnancies caused me to have cavities. They sucked all of the enamel out of my teeth.” This is a fallacy. Decay during pregnancy is due to sugar intake and/or acid exposure caused by vomiting or acid reflux. Also, lack of hygiene can be lessened due to an increased gag reflex. Babies cannot suck the enamel away, but acid and bacteria certainly can! If you experience this issue, do not brush after vomiting or a reflux attack. Rinse with 8 ounces of warm water plus ½ to 1 teaspoon of baking soda to neutralize the acid. Wait 30 minutes to brush. Sugar: Sugar is your enemy. Sugar feeds bacteria. It’s not the amount, it’s the frequency. Watch snacking. Sugar is in an apple and a chocolate bar; bacteria aren’t picky. Sugar also causes inflammation. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process. Lack of good hygiene: Talk with your dentist about prevention. Floss, brush and use prescription fluoride toothpaste or an essential oil toothpaste containing xylitol.
ADDRESSING SOCIAL I S O L AT I O N A SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY COULD BE THE ANSWER BY ROBINA GAINES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, OLYMPIC ALZHEIMERS RESIDENCE
S
ocial isolation, a sense of loneliness that comes from a lack of interactions with others, can carry some serious health consequences. Studies have found that isolated individuals have higher rates of heart disease and other chronic illnesses and are often at greater risk for depression and dementia. As individuals age, new stages of life may reduce daily interactions and increase the likelihood of isolation. Seniors may lose contact with co-workers after retiring or may not see their children as frequently once they start families of their own. A reduced interest in friends or social situations or neglecting a previously cherished hobby may be signs that your loved one is experiencing social isolation. While talking about isolation can be challenging and emotional, it’s important to discuss the topic early on before any serious health problems emerge. By having an honest and open conversation with your loved one, you can both address the situation in a positive way. Senior living communities are a great option for those who may be experiencing isolation. These communities provide physically and mentally stimulating opportunities in an active and supportive community-based living environment. Here are just a few ways a move to a senior living community can help reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness: • Activities and events - Participating in activities of like interest can help give seniors an easy and accessible way to make meaningful connections with those around them. Most communities also hold regular events throughout the year, which provide seniors an opportunity to engage with their neighbors and spend time with family members.
relationships between older adults and their families. The sense of relief that comes with knowing your loved one is taken care of can help reduce stressful interactions and free up more time to enjoy each other’s company. • Furry friends are invited too! - Studies have shown that pets can have therapeutic physical, mental and emotional benefits. Many senior living communities will welcome your loved one’s cherished pets, which can lead to frequent opportunities to socialize. • Live better - Wellness programming in senior living communities allow freedom for residents to choose a variety of physical, emotional, spiritual and vocational gatherings to promote socialization and boost quality of life.

"THE BEST PLACE
TO BE" Shriners patients praise experience at Spokane hospital BY DAN THOMPSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN
S
hae has been a regular at the Spokane Shriners Hospital since she was a baby. It started with a one-week stint when she was 1 year old to address the scoliosis that was apparent in her spine.
From then on, it was check-up appointments every six to 12 months—up until this visit, which could be as long as three months and a week. “I planned it to the day,” said Shae, now 14 years old. “It depends how fast my body stretches.” The top and bottom of her spine are straight, but there is a significant curve in the middle. Shae started her most recent stint at Shriners in early January as a 4-foot-9 (and a half) teenager. But thanks to the halo that’s been slowly stretching her back, she is now closer to 4-foot-11. The doctors’ goal for her is to “grow” 3 to 6 inches, the process of her spine straightening out to the point that the impending surgery will be most effective. But for now, she is waiting it out, a metal halo screwed to her head, moving around, on this snowy January day, in a wheelchair. Yet through it all, Shae’s spirits have remained high. She, and her parents Debi and Steve, see that the end is about as near as the spring thaw. “I feel like sometimes people let things get to them, to their head, and it doesn’t [for me],” Shae said. “My life could be so much worse.” And her time at Shiners, she said, has been really great. “So fun. It’s like a fancy hotel,” she said in a room off from the main recreation room, which is replete with tables for football, billiards and puzzles, among other diversions. “All the nurses are so nice, everyone’s sweet. The first week, you know everyone, and everyone knows you. “It’s like a home and family away from your actual family.” Shriners started in Spokane as a mobile unit in 1924 and has grown into a state-of-the-art hospital that treats thousands of children from babies to 18-year-olds each year. With the nearest site to the west in Portland, and the nearest to the east in Minnesota, Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane has a large region of coverage, spanning four states as well as parts of Canada.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Its doctors treat conditions of various sorts, from same-day fractures and sports injuries to longer-term treatments such as Shae’s. Shae’s stay is made easier because she completes school online— something she has done since fifth grade—and is able to complete work at her own pace from the hospital. Her parents and older siblings visit frequently and are able to stay in the same room as her if they wish to. It’s that flexibility and personal care that Debi has enjoyed so much, and the ability to be at the hospital for such a long stay is, Debi said, in Shae’s best interest. Wearing the halo to stretch out Shae’s spine will make the surgery to insert metal rods into her back more effective, and they don’t need to rush it; they just need to wait until Shae’s spine has straightened out as much as it is going to. “[The doctor said] it’ll take a commitment, but it really reduces a lot of risk,” Debi said. “We’ve known this was coming … this is just the best place to be.” Shae and Debi were mostly alone on this Friday afternoon, as the hospital tries to line up most of its surgeries early in the week so that patients can recover at home, said Kristin Monasmith, director of marketing and communications for Shriners Spokane. The hospital’s relatively smaller size allows its doctors to provide a higher level of care, Monasmith said, and that the “family centered wrap-around” is a hallmark of their system. Staff want their patients to be as independent as possible and to keep active when they can. Shae’s condition worsened—or rather, became more painful—over the last year or two. Sitting for long periods of time became painful. Even

making it through a movie was difficult, she said. They told their doctor at Shriners, who advised them that this long-term visit would be wise. Shae, Debi and Steve live in Medical Lake, Washington, and they have grown accustomed to the drive. “It takes 18 minutes, door-to-door,” Shae said. “I’ve timed it.” The surgery, though, should be the final step for her. While the metal rods, once in place, will limit her some, the idea is that she won’t have to be in for a long stay at Shriners again. Brenda and 12-year-old daughter Carsyn came to Shriners last summer under much different circumstances. Carsyn, a soccer and basketball player, suffered a foot injury a year ago, in January 2019, and it just wasn’t healing right. Carsyn was playing basketball and, as Brenda described it, “the whole front of her foot rolled over.” Her coach told Brenda that it didn’t look good. When they consulted various doctors, they “got all these different answers,” Brenda said. Some thought Carsyn had hurt her tendon. Maybe it was a strain, or perhaps her growth plate had been damaged. She was in a cast six days a week and would take it off to play, managing the pain, Brenda said. “She was six days in the boot and one day out of the boot, just because [we thought] it was a strain,” Brenda said.
COURTESY PHOTO
But her foot kept swelling up, and Carsyn told her mom, “I promise, there’s something really wrong with my foot.” By that point, Brenda was feeling pretty down about the whole situation and wondered if they would ever really find an answer or if her daughter’s foot would ever fully heal. “You feel a little bit hopeless,” said Brenda, who herself is an athlete and also suffers from multiple sclerosis.

“This problem is just going to continue to happen.” It wasn’t until that summer Carsyn’s parents took her to Shriners, largely because Brenda said they didn’t realize the hospital handled sports injuries such as Carsyn’s. From their entrance into the lobby, though, Brenda said she and Carsyn felt comfortable. And when she met with the doctors, she felt like they were finally getting the right answers. Shriners sees children not just as small adults, Monasmith said, but as very different people because they are still growing. They are also more than a long-term care facility, and they take care of fractures and other surprise injuries that come up, especially for young athletes. Brenda said the way Carsyn’s doctor interacted stood out in their experiences and that the doctor was good at explaining the injury in a way her daughter could understand without scaring her. The doctors took an X-ray and noticed that Carsyn’s foot had been broken for a while, specifically that a part of it had broken away from the rest of the bone. “They knew right away what the problem was,” Brenda said. “They did the least invasive process to see if the bone would reattach itself.”
The tendon, Brenda said, had wrapped itself around the broken piece of bone, which is what was causing the pain and swelling. A few weeks later, after seeing how the foot reacted, the doctors ultimately suggested surgery. Carsyn came in for the surgery on October 31 dressed as a jester. The other kids there, Brenda said, were dressed up, too. “[The doctors] came in and talked to her about what was gonna happen. They didn’t just slap something on and scare her,” Brenda said. “Because of that experience, she won’t be afraid to go into surgery. … Something cutting skin isn’t very pleasing. It doesn’t sound like a bubble bath.” The surgery went well. So well, in fact, that Brenda remembers the doctor storming into the waiting room with a smile on his face, expressing joy as if he were operating on his own child. The doctor told them in detail how the surgery had gone and reported that Carsyn’s recovery would be shorter than expected: just four weeks in a boot. On December 3, Brenda said, Carsyn was back on the basketball court. “They’re just so excellent. They go way over the top to make sure you’re comfortable and welcome, and that we’re part of it,” Brenda said. “They know kids, and they listen.” That is something Shriners takes particular pride in doing, Monasmith said, and the hospital wants care to be coordinated and seamless while giving families confidence and comfort about the situation. Shriners treats all sorts of conditions, from sports injuries like Carsyn’s to spinal deformities like Shae’s. Shriners also provides services regardless of a patient’s family’s ability to pay. If a child is covered by private insurance or a state-funded plan, the hospital will bill accordingly, but such insurance or plans are not required to receive care. Financial donors help fill that gap.

In addition to medical services and care, Shriners has a multi-million dollar research program, with specific focuses on orthopedics, burn care, cleft lip and palate, and spinal cord injuries, according to its website, investing $38 million last year. In 2018, at its 22 locations nationwide, it treated nearly 150,000 children. Shae knew that her visit to Shriners was only a matter of time. But as the pain grew, her family and her doctors found that this timing was right.

difficult, but with a neck pillow she can generally find a way to get comfortable. “The halo, it feels like when you hit your head and you have a really bad headache, and it won’t go away,” Shae said, “and then you get used to it.” On this day, Shae was able to go without taking any medicine to manage the pain of having the halo attached to her head, Debi said. Shae said she is hoping that after surgery—and about a year of recovery—she will be able to do some swimming and diving again. Maybe too some gymnastics, the sport she loved when she was younger. “Right now I feel ehhh,” Shae said, shaking her head, “because I don’t like being in [the halo], because I can feel it stretching my back out, but also good at the same time because it’s stretching out my back and then it relieves all the pressure.” Pressure and pain, she is confident, will all be gone in just a little bit longer, when the halo is gone, the rods are in her back, and her body is finally recovered, with as straight a spine as she has ever had.

DEST INAT ION ALL THE PL ACES TO SAY “I DO” By Abigail Thorpe
L
Cozumel, Mexico
ove is in the air this month, and so what better time to start dreaming up the ideal wedding—or should we say vacation? A quarter of all U.S. weddings are now destination weddings, and there’s a reason this trend is on the rise. Whether it’s to escape the cold (or the heat), provide a more central location for far flung family and friends, or simply do something different, destination weddings let a couple spend more on the experience and less on the production. The majority of destination weddings take place in the U.S., and from tropics to desert, mountains to coast, there are options for the most nature-loving and city-seeking, and all those in between. Here are some top picks for wedding destinations—whatever the time of year you choose to say, “I do.”
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean, this little island is a literal paradise. With one of the largest coral reef systems in the world and various nature reserves like the Chankanaab National Park, there is lots of natural beauty to explore and tropical beaches to relax on. For those who need a break from nature, charming and colorful downtown San Miguel is a vacationer’s dream. If you’re into cutting the thought and work out of it, several all-inclusive resorts on the island ensure you don’t have to worry about much of anything—except making your return flight. When to go: December through February is the best time to visit to miss the high temps and the storms, but beware, this is also high season.
66
Las Vegas, Nevada No shocker, the Marriage Capital of the World is also the most popular destination wedding location in the U.S. Dozens of some of the world’s most glamorous hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and theaters within walking distance of each other make this an adult’s dream playground. And if the neon lights and glitzy casinos aren’t your idea of an ideal wedding locale, there are many beautiful (and peaceful) locations within an easy drive of the strip, so you can have the best of both worlds. When to go: Spring or early December, avoid holiday weekends and summer. Napa and Sonoma Valley, California A wedding week filled with some of the best wine and food in the world—who could ask for more? Add in some breathtaking scenic drives, charming vineyards and boutique accommodations, and you won’t need to bring much to make it one romantic wedding. When to go: Summer and October.

Maui, Hawaii There’s a reason the island is such a popular wedding destination— waterfalls, rainbows, pristine beaches and some of the best surfing around make Maui the ideal spot to escape for a bit. Grab some sun on the world-famous beaches while the more adventurous tackle snorkeling, surfing or golf, and it doesn’t get much better than a fresh seafood wedding dinner. And to top it off? Maui’s pleasant in every season. When to go: Anytime. Park City, Utah If your dream wedding includes snow, you can’t find a much more charming place than Park City. With four world-class ski resorts and a cute mining-town-turned-upscale-resort destination, you and your guests don’t have to go far to find everything you need for the dream weekend away. The town is just as cute in summer, when hiking and biking replace winter play. And with Salt Lake City airport just 40 minutes away, getting there is stress-free, even in winter. When to go: December through April, June through September.

Florida Keys, Florida White sand beaches, a vibrant nightlife, diverse shopping and dining and southern charm make the Keys an ideal wedding destination. From Key Largo to Key West, there’s plenty to keep you occupied, whether it’s exploring the various underwater sea life or strolling through the charming city streets with their colorful southern homes. When to go: December through April to miss the summer heat, but this is also high season. May and June can be nice as well, just skip the spring break crowd. Mackinac Island, Michigan Situated between the upper and lower peninsulas in Michigan, this national historic landmark is chock full of charm. The island is car free, but bicycles and horse-drawn carriage make for a much more romantic destination. The architecture spans three centuries, giving you plenty of options when it comes to classic Victorian mansions or Colonial revival-style for accommodations. When to go: May and October are the prettiest months without all of the summer crowds.
Palm Springs, California If a winter wedding without the coat sounds refreshing, Palm Springs is the destination. The city exudes relaxation with its golf courses, stylish hotels, spas and shopping. Everything seems to move slower, while the sun colors the city’s exquisite mid-century architecture a pale pink. It’s like a refreshing trip to the ‘50s and ‘60s. When to go: January through April. Newport, Rhode Island In true New England style, Newport offers a high-class taste of the Atlantic. Huge mansions built by turn-of-the-century tycoons from New York and Boston provide scenic locations for a wedding, while shopping, dining and sailing provide plenty of activity for the out-of-towner.
When to visit: Summer or shoulder season. The Newport Jazz Festival in August is a nice attraction but makes for a busy weekend.

Washington winery tours A TASTY SIP THROUGH THE COLUMBIA VALLEY BY ABIGAIL THORPE | PHOTO COURTESY OF ARBOR CREST WINERY
N
apa Valley may get the usual nod when it comes to winemaking, but in recent years Washington wines are having a moment. No longer labeled the land of rieslings and value wines (though it still puts out some delightful rieslings), Washington and Columbia Valley in particular is at the top of its game when it comes to wine growing and making. Over the past decade, wineries in the area have tripled, with the Columbia Valley AVA—which includes well-known growing regions of Walla Walla, Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley, Wahluke Slope and Rattlesnake Hills—covering over 11 million acres. The area’s warm, dry temperatures, well-draining soil and cooler nights in the higher elevations make for wines that are lush, fruit-forward and consistent. Cabernet sauvignons, merlots, chardonnays, rieslings and syrahs top the list, providing a sipping option for everyone. The days may be cold, but the tasting rooms are warm and inviting at these top wineries, and most are within an easy day’s drive.

GRAMERCY CELLARS Manhattan-based master sommelier Greg Harrington tasted Washington wines—and never looked back. A move, vineyard and tasting room later, Gramercy Cellars (getting its name and label from Manhattan's Gramercy Park) in Walla Walla is turning out world-class reds with oldworld style and new-world kick. Specializing in Rhone and Bordeaux blends, the winery utilizes minimalist winemaking techniques and keeps it small—only producing 8,000 cases each year. Try their Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. $15 per person tasting fee (waived with bottle purchase). Open Tuesday through Friday by appointment, Saturday 11am to 5pm. 509.876.2427. GramercyCellars.com. KIONA VINEYARDS Located in the Red Mountain region of Columbia Valley, Kiona’s panoramic views from the tasting room overlooking the vineyard almost rival the wines—almost. Started in 1975 by Jim Holmes and John Williams before Red Mountain became known as a premier grape growing region, the vineyard is in its third generation and still family

Each vintner has access to Washington grapes, with the winery outfitted to each one’s exact cellar specifications and needs. The result is renowned wines that frequently sell out quickly. The tasting room was named one of the U.S.’s 10 Best Winery Tasting Rooms by USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards and is still a fairly well-kept secret, although it’s gaining acclaim and attention. Stop by the tasting room to make sure you get a taste while they last. Sit-down tastings by appointment 11am to 5pm daily. Starting at $20 per person. 509.526.0905. LongShadows.com. For the Couple Who Has It All! UNIQUE WEDDING GIFT IDEAS SURE TO PLEASE
What do you give the couple who already has everything? We’ve all had those friends: the couple who seems to have it all together, who seem to want for nothing. When their wedding day approaches, you draw a blank on what you could possibly give them that they don’t already have. This is when you get creative. You dive deeper, targeting their shared hobbies, passions and higher-value items like new experiences and discoveries. Start with these six unique gift ideas for the hard-to-shop-for newlyweds in your life.
BY TAYLOR SHILLAM
FOR THE MUSIC EXPERTS, enhance their listening experience with a record player. You know the couple: They frequent concerts together and most likely met at a music festival. They’re always ready to “wow” you with their knowledge of both obscure indie bands and the evolution of rock music. You know they would take a deep dive into a record store and could spend hours there like a bookworm in a library. Why not give them that experience, and make it even more special, by gifting them their first record player? With the variety of players available now, your choices range from very simple to very advanced. The price point and extra features are up to you, but the enhanced experience is the same. Something about picking up a record, enjoying its cover, feeling a mix of nostalgia and excitement as it starts to play just can’t be compared to your average streaming experience. Your music-loving couple would have to agree.
FOR THE SOCIAL DRINKERS WHO REGULARLY ENJOY THEIR LIBATIONS, spark their interest with a gift that allows them a more hands-on approach to their hobby. A home brewing kit brings some experimental fun into the home, producing homemade beers that can be enjoyed on a night in or brought to a party as a gift that keeps on giving. Home brewing kits are available in a variety of sizes and price ranges, including the Williams Sonoma IPA Craft Beer Kit ($49.99) and the Brew Share Enjoy Homebrew Starter Kit ($99.98), which gives you everything you need for two cases of your beer style of choice. For the couple that thoroughly savors their craft brews, provide something that the nearest brewery can’t: a recipe uniquely their own.

FOR A COUPLE WHO LOVES THEIR KITCHEN, give the gift of a personalized recipe collection or recipe book. Have your longtime friends been lusting after your grandma’s banana bread recipe? Does a member of the happy couple have special diet requirements that need to be carefully adhered to? Or maybe they’re simply a couple of foodies whose love language is food and who get pure joy out of preparing and sharing it. There are endless situations in which a thoughtful recipe collection would come in handy for a newly married couple. Whether it’s a collection comprised of well-kept family recipes, or a well-reviewed cookbook— consider Sarah Copeland’s “The Newlywed Cookbook,” featuring ideas for everything from spontaneous picnics to pre-planned dinner parties, or “Two in the Kitchen,” written by foodie couple Christie Dufault and Jordan Mackay—a couple who loves to cook and dine can always be inspired by fresh ideas.

FOR THE COUPLE WITH A GREENTHUMB MINDSET BUT A LOWMAINTENANCE LIFESTYLE, consider this membership. Sometimes you have the best intentions to keep a plant alive, but other priorities arise. Life gets in the way. But should people who fall in this category be rendered unable to brighten their home with greenery? This is where the hardto-kill plant club comes in. The monthly subscription is “designed as a program to put your plant-related anxieties at ease.” They start you off with a hard-to-kill plant (low maintenance), then slowly introduces you to more exotic species with enhanced instructions on their care. Starting at $25 per month, the memberships are highly customizable, include non-toxic plants and hand-painted terra cotta pot, and offer a noobligation way to ease into the capability of keeping another being alive. Now there’s a habit some newlyweds could benefit from. Full details on memberships can be found at HeyHorti.com.
FOR THE THRILL SEEKERS, give them an exciting experience they can do together, such as skydiving. There aren’t many gifts more valuable than the impactful memory of a shared experience. For the couple who seems up for anything and are always pushing their limits, skydiving together is likely on their to-do list—and what better way to help them jump into married life? With deals on Groupon and specialty skydiving locations popping up more frequently, it’s easier than you think to give the gift of some time in the sky.

FOR THE MOVIE BUFFS, consider a projector to take those “We’re just staying in with a movie” nights to the next level. Perfect for the couple who thrives on Oscar nods, Rotten Tomatoes scores and Sundance film releases, you can treat them to a movie night in that will have the same feel of a theater experience. A projector doesn’t have to break the bank, with affordable options available from Walmart, Amazon, Kohl’s and more, but it can contribute to incredible memories and a way to evolve their shared passion for movies. Activities from cozy winter nights in to outdoor movies on warm summer evenings all become possible—and more fun—when you own a projector. Finding a wedding gift that will be enjoyed and appreciated can be very difficult. It’s even harder when the married couple-tobe already seems to have everything they could want or need. By targeting their unique interests, hobbies and values, you can narrow down your search to a few wedding gift options that make a lasting impact in the memories they create.

STEP UP YOUR WINTER SKI VACATION A luxury stay in Whistler, British Columbia By Marguerite Cleveland
N
othing gets you more in vacation mode than a stunning scenic drive to your destination. The epic views from the Sea to Sky Highway leading to Whistler, British Columbia, are some of the best in the world. After this drive, you arrive in Whistler Village, which is reminiscent of a European ski town, but this one has an Old-World charm with all the modern conveniences.
Where to Stay There are two Pan Pacific hotels in the Whistler Village, and both are luxurious experiences with all-suite accommodations that include a full kitchen. For the best location in Whistler, you’ll want to choose the Pan Pacific Mountainside Hotel, just steps away from both the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain gondolas. Enjoy spectacular views from the outdoor deck with a heated pool and two whirlpools. The Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre is further from the slopes but offers a slope-side ski valet and storage. Your daily rate also includes a complimentary daily breakfast buffet. Also enjoy an outdoor lap pool and whirlpools. Both hotels provide a luxury experience with a helpful, friendly staff. Where to Eat The Whistler dining experience offers something for everyone with a wide variety of restaurants. For an extravagant experience that is fun and not stuffy, try the Bearfoot Bistro. Start with a pre-dinner activity first. Don a Canada Goose arctic expedition parka and sip vodkas while learning about this alcohol with a visit to the Ketel One Ice Room with its sub-zero temperatures. The extreme temperature of -25 degrees takes the burn away when tasting from

the more than 50 vodka choices. If you want a more active experience, try champagne sabering. The founder of the restaurant, Andre SaintJacques, holds the Guinness World Record for champagne sabering 21 bottles in one minute. This fun lesson takes place in the underground wine cellar with 20,000 bottles of world-class wines. Next enjoy dinner in the dining room, which sources ingredients from local farmers and around the world to create an eclectic menu sure to please even the most discerning foodie. For a special treat, book the Chef ’s Table and interact with Executive Chef Melissa Craig as she prepares a five-course tasting menu for your group.
gravy). After a day of skiing, you’ll have earned the calories. The wait staff is fun and very knowledgeable about the menu and can make recommendations if you are unsure what to order.
For a fun après ski experience with a great location (right in your hotel), head to the Dubh Linn Gate Pub, which has been a Whistler favorite since 1997 when it was designed, crafted and transported from Ireland to Whistler. It has a covered outdoor patio with outdoor heating and a fire feature with great views of the mountainside. Combine that with good hearty food and nightly live music for a great way to end your day. The food here is really good, with everything from juicy burgers and crispy fries to bangers and mash (sausage and mashed potatoes smothered in
Vallea Lumina is an amazing nighttime activity that pairs nature with modern technology. The journey begins with a bus ride from Whistler Village. The magic begins as you leave the lights of Whistler and begin a dark ride toward Pemberton. The website for Vallea Lumina is very vague on photos and what you will experience, which is a good thing, as it creates a special experience where you aren’t sure what you will encounter. The bus will take you to a camp with a snack bar, firepits with roaring fires, and restrooms. From here you will depart on a 1-kilometer

hike on a mostly level and flat trail through an old-growth forest. The basic storyline is you are following the traces of two hikers paired with legends of the indigenous people. The experience combines lighting, music and other special effects for a captivating walk in which guests of all ages will be enthralled. This is a must-try activity. Make sure to dress warmly and be prepared to walk in the snow. Whistler is known for its skiing, and there are some luxury experiences that go above and beyond the average experience. Did you know you can book an Olympian to ski or snowboard with? Spend a day one-on-one or with a group of up to four for one price and learn your Olympian’s techniques and listen to their stories. Select the person of your choice from the Whistler Blackcomb website. Step your game up even more by booking a gold medalist for an additional fee. Strong intermediate or above skill level skiers can book a Heli-skiing tour for the best in backcountry alpine skiing or snowboarding. The tour takes you up the mountain, includes lunch, avalanche safety equipment, an experienced guide, and some tours include video and photos of your experience. Epic! After all the outdoor activity, you may find yourself a little achy. The Scandinave Spa Whistler is just the answer. Enjoy a traditional Scandinavian bath experience paired with a massage, and you will be fully relaxed. The whole concept is built around hydrotherapy, which consists of a cycle of hot-cold-relax, providing therapeutic results. The outdoor baths are beautifully scenic in the winter, and there is no talking for a truly peaceful experience. Make sure to allow plenty of time for your experience. The spa provides two towels; use one for the baths and keep the other in your provided locker for later. Bring flip flops or water shoes, and spring for the bathrobe rental. Check out the Made in Whistler Market held in the Westin Resort & Spa, open every Sunday through March from noon to 5pm. Offerings include handcrafted pottery, fine art, jewelry, and many others. NOT YOUR GRANDMA’S CHOCOLATE CAKE Recipe & Photo Courtesy of Stephanie Lynn Gertrude Brown Yield: Two 8-inch-round Cake Pans
INGREDIENTS: 2 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs ¾ cup cocoa powder (specialty dark if available) 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour ¼ tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda 1 cup hot coffee 2 tbsp. Amaretto or other favorite liquor 1 tbsp. vanilla 1 cup sour cream ½ cup vegetable oil
METHOD:
• Preheat your oven to 325°F. This would also be the perfect time to brew yourself a pot of coffee. Just remember to save a cup for the recipe! • In a large bowl with a hand mixer, or the bowl of your stand mixer with paddle attachment, combine sugar and eggs. Beat mixture on medium speed until light and fluffy. • In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Slowly add dry ingredients to your egg mixture. Mix on low speed until smooth. • Add hot coffee, liquor and vanilla to the batter; be sure to scrape the sides of the bowl well, then mix on low speed until well combined. • Mix sour cream into batter until fully incorporated, followed by the vegetable oil. Mix both on low to medium speed. Set aside while you prepare the cake pans. • Using melted butter or vegetable pan spray, coat two 8-inch-round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper. This will help the cakes pop out of the pan after baking and cooling. • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Place in oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. • Transfer to cooling racks and let cool 10 minutes, then run a knife around the edge of the pans and turn the cakes upside-down onto the racks, and carefully remove the pans to cool completely. Remove the parchment paper at this time.
TO SERVE:
• You can now choose your favorite frosting recipe to smear all over this decadent chocolate cake, or even simply top with whipped cream and fresh berries! The frosting featured in the photo is an old-fashioned “cooked” buttercream with fresh berries to complement the rich dark chocolate flavor. I hope you satisfy your sweet tooth with this next level treat, or impress that special someone this Valentine’s Day!
