FEBRUARY IS SYNONYMOUS with LOVE because of Valentine’s Day. Couples set aside their differences and celebrate their love for that one day. The ideal is to celebrate love every day. Most couples have issues or conflict in some area. Other couples have a single issue that echoes so loudly they can’t even connect to one another in the areas they agree. Some couples have gotten into the habit of battling over everything and others sweep anything unpleasant under the rug...most fall in-between. Neither strategy creates the environment for a lush and lively romantic relationship. I don’t mean to imply that creating a loving relationship is easy. Simple in theory doesn’t mean easy in practice. Rarely is something rewarding accomplished easily. Nothing in human experience is more rewarding than a happy marriage and a thriving family. There are a few guidelines to achieve the desired goal. The following quotation is the best advice on marriage I ever received as a young wife and mother.

When you fell in love the relationship was your top priority. Lovers invest time and energy planning romantic encounters to secure a beloved’s affections. Blissful romantic moments in long-term relationships don’t happen unless affection and appreciation is nurtured and choreographed into daily life. Creating time and space for magic doesn’t guarantee that bliss will follow, but NOT making courtship and couple time a priority guarantees that magic is unlikely to occur.

Last month I wrote about upgrading your relationship in the new year. The inevitable mini-divorces are wake-up calls. February is the perfect time to rejoice in the love that brought you together, to build on the parts you do well, and to face honestly and with open hearts the elements that no longer serve you. Direct your energy and resources into creating the relationship you want. Your individual goal is to become the partner you want to have.
The words did not seem encouraging at first hearing. But over the years, they came back again and again to remind me to “hang in there” when plodding through the inevitable deep valleys that occur in every relationship. Couples repaint walls, reseed lawns, replace

Building Momentum THE PROMISE OF THE POSSIBLE

IT’S FEBRUARY AND nearly 30 percent of the people who set goals for 2016 have already set them aside and have returned to their old habits. By the time April rolls around, over 50 percent will have given up on the majority of their 2016 goals. We do this in both our personal and professional lives, but not you. Taking time now to get curious and ask, “What’s the greatest risk to fulfilling my goals, aspirations and dreams and how do I counteract this?” is key to creating the results you long for this year. In business, the demands to maintain the current level of service while handling the inevitable obstacles present the greatest risk to fulfilling new goals. In other words, our “day job” gets in the way of advancement. In our personal lives, it’s much the same. The current demands of life and the minor emergencies that arise push the vacation out another year or shelve our dream to write the book, spend extra time with family, save money or embark on new health practices. Soon our “new” goals fall by the wayside. In short, the demand of the urgent overrides the promise of the possible. To complicate matters, advice for fulfilling our

goals and aspirations varies from one author to the next. Most articles advise you to write down your goals, but one article says to read them daily, while the next article firmly states to set them aside, asserting that reading and re-reading your goals is likely to be overwhelming and experience feeling stuck. Focusing on the success process helps us make sense of this. When broken down to its simplest, there’s only one path to lasting success. Know what you want. Decide it will happen. Act upon the decision. Know what you want. Clarity has power, so write your goals on paper rather than simply think about them. In other words, “Don’t just think it. Ink it.” Research in neuroscience shows that when you “feel” the positive feelings linked to accomplishing your goals, you’re EIGHT times more likely to achieve them. Let’s add, “And link it to your feelings.” This requires imagining your goals as if they’ve happened, and they come to life! Decide it will happen. “Decide” is from the Latin word, dēcīdere, which means to cut away. Making a decision cuts away the possibility of turning back. In short, you put a stake in the ground
for your new future. When distractions, obstacles and setbacks arise – and they will – your decision supports you to “lean into” the promise of what’s possible. Notice that making a decision doesn’t require knowing HOW. t simply requires a definite decision.
Unleash Your Potential
Act upon the decision. Now it’s time to act. You may find yourself in one of two camps, depending on the level of risk you’re willing to assume. Those who assume a high level of risk often act with insufficient clarity. Those with a low tolerance for risk try to figure everything out before they begin. Either approach decreases the probability of success.

Well, it isn’t as long as you think! According to the IRS, “You must keep your records as long as they may be needed for the administration of any provision of the Internal Revenue Code. Generally, this means you must keep records that support items shown on your return until the period of limitations for that return runs out.” Need more clarity? Generally, you should keep any and all documents that may have an impact on your federal tax return. Individual taxpayers should usually keep the following records supporting items on their tax returns for at least three years: • Bills, credit cards and Invoices • Mileage logs • Checks or any other proof of payment

BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS RAVISH NATURAL RESOURCES, manufacture toxic things, produce more and more stuff with a less skilled workforce, develop a world of waste requiring rules and regulations to protect us from the stuff we have brought into being. Was this the intention of the Industrial Revolution?
He aimed to democratize the auto marketplace and he did by decreasing costs and increasing production. The underlying symbolism of this linear model (whether they knew it or not) held the concept of mother Earth at it’s core. Who else would take responsibility for polluting our waterways and atmosphere? Nature appeared vast and unaffected; it will heal itself.
Industrialists were eager for progress (we can relate). Did some begin with the best of intentions of democracy; to lower costs of goods and services, allowing accessibility to those who had less? Were they working to create a more equitable standard of living? Perhaps.
Here’s the paradox: while democratizing the world for some, the Industrial Revolution was (and we still are) diminishing the earth and lives of others. It is a revolution with no end game.
There was an increase in higher standards of living, medical care and education. Overall, average life expectancy rapidly increased as well as the conveniences and comforts in life. All sounds great, right? So where did the revolution go awry?
As we sit here, living in the aftermath, spouting blame and sharing our dismay for the depletion of our natural resources and loss of species diversity and lack of skilled laborers, perhaps we can agree: it is unlikely the Industrial Revolution was intentional. In fact, it may be the complete opposite – they unintentionally created the world in which we are now living.
Many were looking for an economic revolution to gain capital and increase volume through efficiencies of mechanical systems. This grew into a linear model, literally and figuratively.
Let’s be intentional together.

Pew Research Center conducted a study in 2015 on “How’s Life?: Measuring Well-being.” In the comparative study, Americans who ranked high in income are lacking in work-life balance; our life expectancy is dwindling and yet our perceived health is far, far higher than any other country. Advocating for our Children CASA VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE VALUABLE SERVICE

IN PIERCE COUNTY alone there are around 1,500 children in the foster care system, and for those children, there are Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers appointed to every child by the court. Sadly, in Pierce County there aren’t enough. According to the Pierce County Juvenile Court system, CASAs are appointed by the court to advocate for the best interest of a child who has allegedly been abused or neglected. The CASA investigates the facts of the case and recommends a course of action. They explain findings to the court and facilitate the resolution of the presenting problems and monitor the child’s progress.

Buffy Via, a CASA coordinator and guardian ad litem in Pierce County Juvenile Court said that because there is a shortage of CASAs, around 240, the guardian ad litems (someone appointed by the court to act on behalf of the child) take on the role of a CASA volunteer. She said that some of the guardian ad litems have a caseload of 60 to 80 kids. “Our staff guardians just don’t have the time,” Via said. “Our goal one day is that all the kids be served by the CASA and not by the staff guardian ad litem.” Via said that the child having an advocate all to himself or herself is huge.

“CASAs have the time and energy to get to know all the players,” Via said. “Most of our volunteers make connections with the children’s schools and with any therapist that the kids are going to and even meet the parents or guardians.” Each CASA volunteer will typically have a few cases. In November there were 241 CASAs in Pierce County serving 553 children and there are 12 guardian ad litems. Each case lasts around two years. Sue Braaten, a CASA volunteer from Gig Harbor, has volunteered for 20 years and remembers why she started. “I just had a heart for these kids and what they go through,” she said. “I saw an ad in the paper with a little dishevel girl’s picture with it saying, ‘you can be my voice.’ I called and went to the training and have been doing it ever since.” Braaten remembers one of her cases as a CASA. “There were two siblings that were part tribal, and usually if they are Native (American) they will only place them in a Native American home,” she said. “They were placed in a nontribal home, but it was such a good home and I was able to fight for them to stay there after they had been there for many years and the foster family still included their tribal heritage.” Braaten says that the biggest reward for her is when the children go back to their parents or find a forever family. She also said that the
hardest thing is when the judge doesn’t agree with her opinion or when she feels something is best for the child and it doesn’t happen. “You have to have pretty thick skin,” Braaten said. “I think because often you’re standing up for these kids and it might not be the most popular opinion or you’re working with the social worker who feels differently than you, you just have to be able to be strong and not be easily offended.” Kenny Hayes, President of CASA Kids, a nonprofit that helps children in the foster care system and supports the CASAs, sees a huge need for more volunteers and resources for the children. “Many times they are ripped out of their house in the middle of night, with only the clothes on their back and their whole world has been shook,” Hayes explained. One of the programs that CASA Kids started is “A Book for Me,” where they give every child that comes into foster care a book with their nameplate on it. They already have 3,000 books. Hayes says that one day they hope to have program where each child gets a backpack full of clothes, toys and basic needs. But for now, they are placing a lot of attention on trying to recruit CASAs. Gig Harbor, has been a CASA for nine years. Gig Harbor Midday Rotary provided the initial funds that led to the nonprofit status of CASA Kids in August of 2013. That initial funding came when Braaten was named Business Volunteer of the Year by Midday Rotary and donated her winnings to support the CASA Kids program. Anderson said that, “Several members of Midday Rotary plan to become CASA volunteers this year. Our goal is to help more persons in Pierce County learn about the vital importance of the CASA program and to help recruit more volunteers.” Anderson said that he is hoping that more Rotary Clubs will provide active support and help recruit more CASA volunteers among their members and help get the word out about the need for more volunteers in Pierce County. HEALING HANDS IF YOU ARE A PET OWNER, you know your four-legged friends quickly become part of your family. And when your pet is out of sorts, you struggle to figure out just what is wrong with them. There are many who are finding answers and comfort in the work of Dr. Ming Chee and Candy Boroditsky, the co-founders of Reiki Fur Babies in Gig Harbor. Since May of 2008, Chee and Boroditsky have brought healing and peace to countless pets. Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) comes from the Japanese words “Rei” and “Ki” meaning spiritually-guided life energy; for pets it is a form of spiritual healing that helps harmonize the mind, body and soul. It can be used as a treatment for relaxation as well as a tool for releasing negative emotions and limitations. Safe, painless and non-invasive, the treatment is performed by Chee and Boroditsky while you and your pet are in the comfort of your own home. “The Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed,” explains Dr. Chee, who adds that the practitioners do not come to your home, but instead send the healing energy to you. “Reiki doesn’t cause stress, discomfort or pain yet yields powerful results. For healthy animals, Reiki maintains health, provides peace and contentment.” Some of the things that Reiki can help with include stress, pain relief, headaches, an upset stomach, asthma, back problems, sinus and respiratory issues, anxiety and canine hip dysplasia. It can also benefit those animals that have been abused or neglected. And results are seen quickly. Dr. Chee explains that from the moment you book a session, the angels and archangels are sent to your pet. “The session begins long before we come to connect with your pet.” During the 30-minute Reiki session, your “fur baby” will have the benefit of two Reiki masters that will provide one-on-one focus with your animal. “A full Chakra balancing is done while connecting with your pet soul to soul,” said Chee. Boroditsky communicates with your pet during the healing process while Egyptian healing rods and bio-imprint laser rods are used to increase energy healing. Following the session, Chee explains that they prepare a detailed report that combines their individual results, including word for word communication and any additional observations they come across during the session. “For people sessions, all of the above is included and a message from Spirit is channeled,” said Chee. Both Boroditsky and Chee are Usui Reiki Masters. They say that Boroditsky has the ability to hear

One of the animals they worked on was a Golden Retriever that received both physical and mental healings. The dog had been dropped off at the humane society with several problems that included being overweight, two infected front legs, elbows that were damaged from what is thought to be from living a lifetime on cement, a torn ACL (anterior crucial ligament), kennel cough and a matted coat. She had lost her will to live. After three visits, the dog has flourished. After the first session, where Chee said they heard sighs and feelings of pure exhaustion, the dog was walking from room to room. Sending her healings to her hips and assuring her with love and healing energy, the dog was transformed and playing in the grass as soon as the next day. She is now a happy and calm dog who frolics and follows her master all around. And the even better news? Their healing hands work just as well on the animals’ masters as well!

It’s an event that is not only fun, but is also making an impact in the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. RAGS is a juried wearable art competition and sale that benefits the YWCA’s domestic violence prevention and intervention programs. Produced entirely by volunteers, sponsors and underwriting donations, RAGS offers the public an opportunity to view and acquire fabulous handmade clothing, jewelry and accessories created by artisans from across the country. A portion of all sales helps the YWCA keep survivors of domestic violence and their children safe, healthy and self-sufficient. The RAGS Guild Annual Wearable Arts Competition has two parts: The GALLERY, with awards competition and the MARKETPLACE, a boutique-style sale of the wearable art.

It is all about education and collaboration. People don’t know what they don’t know. And as a community we need to pay attention. As communities change, culture changes with it. There is an increasing number of abused women and children that are getting the help they need to escape dire situations through the efforts of The RAGS Guild. These women and children would otherwise often end up on the street with nowhere to turn. Events like this one provide a way for people to get involved that do not involve fear.

The women that survive this and come back from it lead their children through example that they too are survivors; they can do anything. “The artists who display and sell their work at RAGS agree to give 33 percent of their sales in the marketplace and 40 percent of their sales in the gallery to RAGS. It is a labor of community connectedness, concern for families who may have nowhere else to turn, and faith in the ability of the YWCA to turn resources into valuable services and ultimately into changed lives. In partnership with Larson Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma, the car dealer clears the showroom floor for the event, and provides a shuttle for attendees for the event as it has grown so large it spills out into the parking lot. Additional parking is also made available by the dealership. “We are honored to have been a part of the RAGS Wearable Art Sale and Show for the past 16 years. We do this because domestic violence is a real problem in our society and it often goes unnoticed. By opening up our showroom to the RAGS Guild and their artists, we not only hope to raise money for the YWCA’s programs but also to bring awareness to our employees, customers and community that domestic violence is something we all can work towards preventing,” said Philip Adams, Marketing Director of Larson Automotive Group. RAGS Story In 1994, a group of YWCA board members was looking for a fun way to raise money for the YWCA while giving the arts community a
venue to show their work. The RAGS concept developed into an opportunity to enjoy and purchase work of talented local fiber artists and designers in support of both the YWCA and the local artists. RAGS soon outgrew its first venue, The American Art Company, and relocated to the Larson Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma dealership, where it remains today. RAGS and the YWCA RAGS is underwritten entirely through donations from people and organizations who believe in the YWCA Pierce County’s mission and in RAGS’ creative approach to supporting that mission. Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is a blessing to the community B Y LY N E T T E H O Y P HOTO S B Y DIA N E F E T Z N E R
WHAT BEGAN AS A grassroots effort to preserve 19 acres of pristine parkland has evolved into a model community foundation that awarded almost $4.5 million in grants and scholarships to Gig Harbor and surrounding communities over the past ten years while reinforcing the region’s commitment to nature. The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation (GGHF) was originally established as the PenMet Foundation in May of 2006 to help raise $1.25 million needed to purchase the land that became Harbor Family Park. Less than two years later, the inaugural board of directors worked with the Park District in Gig Harbor to raise an additional $200,000 to establish the first Boundless Playground in the Northwest at Sehmel Homestead Park. A Boundless Playground is equipped with specialized equipment that allows children with virtually any type of disability experience what most other children take for granted and allows for children of all abilities to play side by side. “At that point, we all realized we were onto something very special,” recalled Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, a founding member of the Foundation board and the current CEO of the Office of Development for the GGHF.
In addition to awarding the Foundation’s normal array of grants and scholarships, this year the board of directors will present its first Distinguished Volunteer Leadership Award to
Gustanski said her proudest moment from that eventful year was the establishment of a scholarship program that allowed children from every economic situation to have the opportunity “to have the strong start they deserve...” one of the many individuals who dedicate time and energy to the community. Nominees will be judged based on a minimum of two years of notable service that contributed to the mission of the Foundation. By the end of 2010, the PenMet Foundation

directors had negotiated the sale of an additional 18.8 acres of adjacent park land from Knight Forest to double the size of Harbor Family Park at a price less than half of what was paid for the original property. The charity formally changed the name of the organization in 2011 to the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation and broadened the scope of its mission to better serve the population. The Foundation joined forces with the Peninsula Gateway to develop the Students of Distinction program to honor 36 students from the three local high schools in the areas of academics, athletics, business and entrepreneurship, community service, music, art and drama, overcoming adversity, and science and technology. Students from each school were featured in local newspapers in the weeks leading up to the annual banquet. Since its inception, the Students of Distinction Fund has raised more than $130,000 for postsecondary education scholarships. The 13th Annual Students of Distinction Awards event in 2015 came together through the efforts of more than 300 volunteers and resulted in $12,500 in scholarships awarded to local high school seniors.
The GGHF served more than 50,000 individuals in 2015 with 1,800 hours of programs and distributed more than $120,000 in grants and direct funding across the eight core areas that serve the greater community.
In addition to raising monies for the purchase of park land, the Foundation brought together hundreds of volunteers in 2012 who donated time in their own neighborhoods. Matched with the start of the school year, the GGHF launched its own aptlynamed Curious by Nature School that provides a truly unique opportunity for young children to learn about nature in hands-on environment. Gustanski said her proudest moment from that eventful year was the establishment of a scholarship program that allowed children from every economic situation to have the opportunity “to have the strong start they deserve … every kid deserves the chance to get their hands dirty and play with a frog.” Curious by Nature continued to expand in its second year with the addition of an outdoor classroom and learning garden, thanks in part to a $30,000 grant from the Foundation for early childhood education and a series of Stewards Scholarships to help “those in the greatest need,” according to Gustanski. In 2013, the GGHF hosted a series of community workshops to listen to the needs from each community’s residents. The concept of ONE Community was magnified even more the next year when the Foundation created The Community Heritage Fund that established a perpetual endowment to support efforts to create and maintain the legacy of stories that will live on for generations. Separate fundraising arms of the Foundation were formed in 2014 dedicated to the core values determined by the board of directors. The early childhood education arm of the Foundation raises funds with an annual Green Gig Locally Grown Dinner using products and produce grown within a 50-mile radius of Gig Harbor, whenever possible. Proceeds raised from the first Big Sports Gig that same year were dedicated to recreational opportunities for disadvantaged youth.

The group representing Sports and Environment held its inaugural Cider Swig in September of 2014 to raise awareness of issues concerning the health of the local watershed and conservation. In addition to her role on the board of directors, Gustanski serves as chairperson of the Cider Swig. “There are a lot of issues the Foundation needs to address,” she explained. “That means some volunteers are forced to wear many hats to get everything we want accomplished.” The Foundation accepted the challenge to carry on the important work of EnviroCorps in 2014 after the passing of its founder, Vernon Young. The retired airplane mechanic had won numerous awards for his volunteer efforts to protect the natural beauty of Gig Harbor and open spaces in Pierce County. Gustanski said continuing the work of Young was a natural fit for the Foundation and a “fitting tribute to a man who loved his community.” In 2015, the Foundation continued the work started by Young by collecting almost 160,000 pounds of litter during 300 hours of clean-up along roadways and in local recreation areas. Volunteers donated an additional 100 hours of clean up along 28 miles of community trails. The Curious by Nature School served more than 80 students from 50 families between the ages of 3 and 10 in 2015 with $5,000 in scholarships to its own Summer Camp programs. The recipients were spread across King, Pierce and Kitsap counties. The school also hosted 1,300-plus visitors to the Waterfront Market and various community events. The Foundation also participated in the 23rd year of the Open Studio Tour that featured excursions through the work space of 26 local artists. The three-day event brought an estimated 2,700 visitors into the studio district of Gig Harbor, or an average of 179 to each artist over the long weekend. All together last year, volunteers with the Foundation contributed 4,470 hours of professional services with an estimated economic value to the region of more than onequarter of a million dollars. EDUCATING AND ENTERTAINING IT IS ALWAYS EXCITING to come up with a great business plan. But when that plan incorporates benefiting the youth in the community, it is even better. That is exactly what a group of Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula community members did when they started KGHP-FM radio station. Milt Boyd, Keith Stiles, Max Byce and Don Hoffman recognized the importance of providing a strong and reliable source of information in the event of an emergency disaster. They put their plan into action and lobbied, fundraised and drafted plans for the station. It first went on the air in 1988. “They decided to base it at Peninsula High School to offer the students an educational tool,” said station manager Spencer Abersold. “Since their passing, the station has been supervised and staffed by a member of the Peninsula School District and all volunteer staff.”

Now owned and operated by the Peninsula School District, KGHP-FM offers students the opportunity to learn the skills, techniques and technology that go into media and broadcasting in a real life, hands-on environment.
When the station was in jeopardy of shutting down due to lack of funds, Abersold took matters into his own hands. Abersold said the idea to lead a grand spectacle and fundraiser gave way to a Guinness World Record attempt. “I spent nine days or 200 hours awake attempting to break the record for the longest radio broadcast ever,” said Abersold. “And the public responded positively.” Through sponsors and donations, the station was able to survive.
The station is the go-to place for both news and entertainment. It is the source for emergency weather and disaster information updates, including school delays and closures, power outages, emergency routes and traffic conditions. And with a radius of 40 to 65 miles and Internet streaming worldwide, its reach is far. “KGHP-FM also is a source of eclectic and varied radio entertainment,” said Abersold, adding that the staff is comprised of volunteer DJs who offer a wide range of information and musical entertainment. In tune to the needs and interests of its audience, KGHP-FM is unique and differs from conventional media sources. Its primary focus is on the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula living community “We offer information that is pertinent to our citizens and audience. We are a commercial free, independent radio station that offers a mix of musical entertainment that is unparalleled by commercial radio stations,” said Abersold, who adds the emphasis of the station is on local South Sound information, including the broadcast of local sporting events. Abersold graduated from Peninsula High School in 1992 and has lived in Gig Harbor for 42 years. He considers it a privilege to be a part of such a great business that provides a service to the community. He credits the citizens of Gig Harbor with financially supporting the station through the years either through donations or sponsorship. “The success of the station belongs to the people responsible for its creation and the vision they set forth for its structure. It has been since supplemented by the community of listeners and audience of KGHP-FM, whose love of independent radio and pride in having a community with

THE MONTH Lillian Portteus - Peninsula High School With a GPA of 3.98, it is amazing that senior Lillian Portteus has any time in her schedule for sports. But she does and she does it well. Lillian has been on the varsity girls’ basketball team for two years and has also been on varsity track and field for three. “I have been a scholar athlete for four years,” she said. Lillian plans to attend a four-year university where she will study sports medicine. And her devotion to athletics won’t stop after high school. “I plan to continue playing basketball and throwing the discus and javelin in college,” said Lillian. Lillian has faced some obstacles along the way but has worked hard to overcome them.

“One of the biggest challenges I have had to face was when I tore all of the tendons in my ankle,” shared Lillian of the injury she suffered playing fastpitch. “I went through extensive physical therapy, but the most difficult part was being out of the game. The experience ended up making me a stronger and more intelligent player on the field because I spent the time off the field observing how the game works at every position.” She has learned many life lessons from both her teammates and coaches, but one in particular has stayed with her. It is something her varsity basketball coach, Shane Patrick, told her. “When you stop playing for just yourself and play for each other instead, that is when you start to succeed.”

Tessa Waage - Gig Harbor High School A senior at Gig Harbor High School, Tessa Waage has enjoyed the opportunities that high school athletics have given to her. “I played volleyball, basketball and fastpitch my freshman and sophomore year, but the past two years I participated in just basketball and fastpitch,” said Tessa who is captain of both teams and also takes several AP classes. Tessa hopes to attend Washington State University in the fall, but will choose to focus on academics. “I would love to participate in intramurals or potentially club teams within the school,” she said, adding that her career focus will be in either the area of sports management or psychology. Tessa shared that she had difficulty as a freshman when she made the varsity
basketball team. She did not get much playing time and felt her confidence slipping. “I began to overcome these obstacles I was facing by changing not only how I played but my mental toughness in the game,” she said. With both basketball and fastpitch, Tessa said she enjoys the environment and being able to escape everything when she is on the court or field. “I am very grateful that I have made lifelong friends through the games as well,” said Tessa. She said her basketball coach has taught her that mental toughness is a key component to anything in life. “I have really grown as a person not just as an athlete from her advice, and I hope to take her words with me in my future.”

Everyone Loves Ivan The love story continues as life-sized sculpture celebrates local icon, Ivan the gorilla
SOMETIMES FRIENDS CAN be found in the most unlikely places, and love can form a bond that exists and endures long after love’s object is gone. Love does not know time, space, age or species. Stephen Richards aptly noted, “When we make friends then we change from being animals to being human.” And so it is that sometimes love comes in the form of an infant, silverback gorilla. His name was Ivan, and he was well-loved member in our area for decades – hence the name of the project to honor him – Beloved Ivan. Bob Daughtery first laid his eyes on Ivan when he was in junior high. He was quite taken with Ivan and later approached the Irwin’s for a job to be Ivan’s playmate. By that time, Bob had become an anthology professor at Tacoma Community College. Knowing how similar gorillas are to humans, Bob wanted to offer Ivan the enriching experiences that Bob knew how to provide. Bob remembers, “I approached the owner of the store in 1985 and since I was teaching anthropology, we knew that gorillas were incredibly intelligent and I knew that Ivan was an under-stimulated gorilla. My job was to come twice a week and play.” Bob would invent various games for Ivan that involved tactile stimulation, but that were also all about fun. Bob would shoot grapes through a plastic pipe and Ivan would dodge them or eat them. Bob also wanted Ivan to feel at home and so he had a hammock put in his compound along with pet finches to keep Ivan company.

Then, there was the game of tug-of-war. Bob recounts, “He tried to trick me when we played tug-of-war. He would grab the rope with his foot and turn and run full speed away from the bars. As you could imagine, the rope would zing through my hands and he would win.” Bob also taught Ivan how to paint, and even though Ivan painted abstract art, Bob took great care with each piece. Bob numbered each painting, had them professionally matted, and then framed. Ivan’s paintings were a big hit with the general public and many Ivan enthusiasts purchased them.
As society became more aware of gorillas and their tremendous intelligence, it was time to move Ivan to a new home. At one point, Michael Jackson almost became the person to be awarded the care of Ivan at his Neverland estate. But ultimately Jackson could not get the Los Angels County to issue the permits to build the special compound for Ivan. In the end and because of the high profile interest from Michael Jackson, Zoo Atlanta revisited the offer to take Ivan. Ivan was sent to the Zoo Atlanta where he lived out the rest of his life with other gorillas to the old age of 50.
Even though Ivan was not taught sign language, communication was easy. Bob noted, “Gorillas are very expressive with their eyes, body language, grunts and sounds. It wasn’t difficult to figure out what Ivan was thinking and he had certain gestures, such as putting the palm of his hand in his mouth, to express frustration.”
Though Bob feels that Ivan was very fortunate to have been moved to Zoo Atlanta, he will always remember their time together with fondness. Bob concludes, “Ivan was a great playmate, a wonderful buddy to sing songs to, to chase around, and to be chased by in
Ivan never lost his precocious spirit and often liked to gently remind Bob who was the boss. “Ivan was playful and he always enjoyed showing me he was smarter, stronger and faster than me.”

return. It was a pleasure to have him in my life because he added so much to it.” Indeed, Ivan touched many lives, whether it was the life of Bob or the many disabled children who were brought to visit Ivan. Ivan might be gone, but the thousands of individuals whose lives he has touched have certainly never forgotten him. Several community members are happy to be involved in assuring that Ivan the Gorilla will once again welcome friends of all ages to Tacoma. But this time, his likeness in bronze will live at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium for all to enjoy. Ivan fans and partners, including artist and sculptor, Douglas Granum, have joined forces with the the Friends of Ivan and Metro Parks Tacoma, which has dedicated space for the sculpture at the zoo’s main entrance.

By creating, placing, and funding a slightly larger than life-size sculpture of Ivan the gorilla at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium (PDZA) entrance in Tacoma, “Beloved Ivan, Learning from His Legacy,” seeks to honor a Puget Sound icon and to inform generations of children and adults about the characteristics and habitat of the Western lowland gorillas of Africa.
Ivan might be gone, but the thousands of individuals whose lives he has touched have certainly never forgotten him. The Beloved Ivan sculpture will be based on a photograph that was taken by photojournalist Dean Koepfler, and provided by the Tacoma News Tribune, of Ivan holding a flower at the Zoo in Atlanta. Granum notes, “Every gorilla has unique facial characteristics. This is a portrait of Ivan which will be recognizable by many who knew him, and it will introduce more people to Ivan, who was an influential representative of Western lowland gorillas found in the wild in the countries of central Africa.” This sculpture, with its muscular physique and powerful beauty, presents the opportunity to share the majesty of a Western lowland gorilla. Children and adults who may never see a wild gorilla will through sculpture and story develop understanding about the way in which gorillas can relate to humans. Ivan’s likeness is sure to inspire awareness of the need to protect
this endangered species. Thus, Ivan will leave a legacy that benefits both community and members of his species at the same time. Fundraising thus far for this project has been acquired through foundation grants and gifts from individuals.

The road to healing between a mother and son By Patty Hutchens

Would he have any memory of this brutal act of violence that took away his innocence before he could even be placed in his mother’s arms?
T
hey say there is no greater bond than that between a mother and child. But as a new mother, I began to question that statement. Shortly after my first child was born, I felt as though my world was falling apart, and I wondered how I would navigate that journey of parenting. It was frightening and exciting at the same time. But, you see, my journey did not start out as that of a typical parent.
first child who had lived safely inside me for 29 weeks. In pain, I let go as my husband exited the men’s room. I had chased her into the hallway and told him she had taken my purse. Unaware that I had been injured, he chased the girl, only to slip and fall when he jumped from the escalator stairs – men’s dress shoes do not make good running shoes. In the meantime, I was doubled over with contractions. Storekeepers came out to help me. We called the doctor. “Get to the hospital,” he said. “But don’t come to ours; go to the one with neonatal care in case we cannot stop the contractions. This baby may be born tonight,” he warned.
It was 22 years ago that I lay in the hospital wondering if the child growing inside of me would survive. If he did, would he be normal? Had he suffered brain damage? Would he have any memory of this brutal act of violence that took away his innocence before he could even be placed in his mother’s arms? A young teenage girl who police believed was part of a gang had attacked me in a mugging. They said she was likely in desperate need of money to continue to survive on the streets. She wore large army boots, a symbol of particular gang the police later told me.
Fear gripped me as we entered the emergency room. The doctors who greeted us were clients of my husband’s. Friendly faces eased his fears. But I was still waiting. Waiting for that kick that this active little baby had given me so many times over the past several weeks. It didn’t come. Why wasn’t he moving? Was he alive? Finally the doctor gave me the relief I was looking for — a heartbeat. An answer to my prayers, the contractions subsided a few hours later.
In a downtown mall restroom, the girl quickly grabbed my purse. I instinctively grabbed her forearm trying to keep that which was mine. In an effort to escape my grasp, the girl lifted her leg and swiftly and forcefully kicked me in my stomach; the stomach that carried my
But it still took several hours before those kicks started again. Looking back, I now realize my son had probably been knocked unconscious. After all, the black bruises that covered my midsection were an indication of just how forcefully I was kicked — he was kicked.

The policeman who visited me gave me the best gift of all. The gift of hope. He shared stories of domestic abuse cases he had investigated – stories of pregnant women who had been assaulted and yet who had subsequently given birth to healthy children. I don’t remember the officer’s name, and I regret not letting him later know the hope he gave me that day. Over the next several weeks I waited for the arrival of my dream, a child. After 27 hours of labor, he finally arrived. A beautiful baby boy with the most perfect features. We named him Kevin and referred to him as “Kevin our bundle from Heaven.” After all, it was God’s protection that had gotten us through the ordeal several weeks earlier. Being the youngest in my family and Kevin being my first child, I really had nothing to compare him to. But as the days went on, it was clear that this little boy whom I desperately
loved wanted little to do with me, his mom. My mother visited and shared her concern that there was something wrong. His behavior was not “typical.” Looking back on home movies of Kevin’s first days, I heard myself expressing an observation that proved true for years – Jim, Kevin’s dad, was the only one who could calm this child. My precious child did not want me to hold him. The first and only time he fell asleep in my arms, he was five months old; it was the night before I returned to work from maternity leave. Broken hearted, I did not know what I was doing wrong. How could I fail as a mother when all I had was a heart full of love to offer? My first Mother’s Day, Kevin was nine months old. I sobbed the entire afternoon. I thought babies instantly bonded with their mothers. I was wrong. I then suffered a miscarriage of my second pregnancy. I had been three months along. There had been a heartbeat, but yet I lost the baby. Was God trying

It was not until my second child, Brett, was born nearly three years later that I realized I was not a failure. Brett and I bonded instantly and he would only sleep in my arms. From the moment he was born he would look for me in a room when he heard my voice, longing for the arms of his mother to cradle him.

But Kevin’s reluctance to be with me continued. I arrived home from work and he would cry when our nanny left. He stood at the front window crying until Jim arrived home from work.
Farfetched? At first I thought so. It makes more sense to just assume he didn’t like me. How can a baby at 29 weeks of gestation blame me, his mother, for allowing him to get hurt? How would he even know?
Doing all I could to find the perfect bonding activity, I failed at every turn. As time went on we enlisted the help of counselors. We went through a few of them in an effort to find

• Recognizing that what happens inside the womb can have a significant impact for years to come, I for one am grateful that science is making advances every day to discount Freud’s theory that personality does not form until age two or three.

But in my heart I believed that this child somehow had an imprint on his soul that affected us long after my bruises disappeared.
Then one day, when he was about 15 years old, I was going about my normal morning routine. I made the bed, poured another cup of coffee, sorted the laundry and got ready for the day while keeping one ear on the morning news. But what I heard on the TV made me suddenly stop. As I listened to the words the newscaster said, tears rolled down my face. Finally, scientific evidence confirmed what I had known in my heart all along. Babies in the womb are able to form memories as early as 30 weeks of gestation – possibly earlier. As I stood there holding onto every word, I felt vindicated and angry at the same time. Angry that a young teenage girl could rob a mother and son of so much during those early years.
One counselor asked me if I had ever shared with Kevin the experience of what happened when he was in the womb. I hadn’t. I took the counselor’s advice. Kevin was 11 years old at the time when I sat him down and shared with him the horrific details of how we almost lost him. I dug deep into boxes where I had secretly tucked away a newspaper that published an editorial I had written on the need for increased police on our local force which at the time was contemplating cutbacks. Kevin asked a lot of questions, and of course he loved the story of how his dad chased the perpetrator through a downtown mall. It began the healing of two hearts.

Interestingly, when Kevin suffered an injury in his teen years, an x-ray showed damage to one of his neck vertebras from what the doctor said was an old injury. There had never been an older injury that we were aware of, and the doctor

concluded it was likely from the injury he sustained in the womb. It was the sharing of our story with Kevin that began the healing of two hearts. It was almost as though a light switch came on. Now 21 years old and embarking on a career as a high school business and marketing teacher, Kevin and I have an amazing relationship. He is the young man I always knew he would become, with or without a close relationship with me. He is a big brother who adores his younger sibling and is loved by all who know him. We have shared many fun memories together over the year – concerts, soccer tournaments and mother-and-son trips. We have a special bond, the one I always hoped for. Yes, my heart broke during those early years of rejection, but now it fills with pride for being part of life’s journey with this amazing young man. So while there is finally scientific evidence that babies can form a memory at the tender age of 30 weeks of gestation, that is something this mother’s heart knew long ago. And what those news reports did not say is that even if those memories are tragic, hearts can still be healed.

“IT’S A GREAT TIME to love the wine you’re with,” says the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. After a huge success of the summer Sip & Stroll as apart of the Gig Harbor Wine & Food Festival, the Alliance is holding its first annual Winter Sip & Stroll on Saturday, February 13 from 1 to 5pm. This winter event will take participants on a stroll through participating local businesses where there will be moments of mingling, nibbling and sipping. Participants will receive a carrying bag, tasting glass, 15 taste tickets for a variety of adult beverages and a map to stroll through the downtown waterfront. The Alliance will provide complimentary shuttle transportation aboard Pierce Transit’s Gig Harbor Trolley throughout the downtown waterfront. Each stroll shop will offer their own selections of wine, craft beer or ciders. Many shops will offer small bites and some will even offer sweet “Valentines” to participate in the upcoming
holiday. There will be eight participating wineries – Hoodsport Winery, Kitzke Cellars, Bunnell Family Cellar, Mosquito Fleet Winery, Ginkgo Forest Winery, Carl’s Pond Winery, Paul Rin Winery and Lupine Vineyards. There will also be two breweries on hand – 7 Seas and Gig Harbor Brewing. Heritage Distillery will also be there, and there will be cider available from Finholm’s Market. The event will also provide participants with an opportunity to sample some of the wonderful food from area businesses including The Harbor General Store, Morso, For the Love of Spice, Gig Harbor Candy Company and Moonstruck Chocolates with Heritage Distilling Company’s infused truffles. There will also be food available from our Waterfront Farmer’s Market, pie tastes from Strays American Pies, Purdy Organics and more. “The primary purpose is to bring people to Gig Harbor’s downtown waterfront and expose

Feeding the children of our community By Maddie Russo As parents, it is important to teach our children the gift of giving. What better way to do that than by bringing them to the Boys and Girls Club of Gig Harbor for Empty Bowls on Saturday, February 20. From 11am to 3pm, you will have the opportunity to purchase an artisan-created bowl by a local potter ($10 up) and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread. Then take your bowl home to remind you that your dollars will go to help combat child hunger in our community. During the summer, the one of every four local children who receive free and reduced price lunches throughout the school year are at risk to go hungry. Empty Bowls is a fundraiser to provide food scholarships through the Altrusa of Gig Harbor Foundation for those children. A $30 scholarship will provide one child with lunches and snacks at the Boys & Girls Club for one week. Forty-eight percent of the children who attended last summer were qualified for a food scholarship. Empty Bowls is presented by Altrusa International of Gig Harbor and the Altrusa Gig Harbor Foundation. Altrusa is a service organization dedicated to building a stronger community and has been working for the community since 1981. Over the past 10 years they have raised $100,000 to equip the commercial-level kitchen for use by the Boys & Girls Club and the community. Now they are partnering with the club to use that kitchen to help feed hungry kids. THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BECOMING POPULAR AMONG FILMMAKERS By Megan Olson There is no better time for televised entertainment than February. Old Man Winter’s grasp leaves many of us feeling restless after months of being trapped indoors. With Super Bowl 50, NCAA basketball, sweeps week, and the Academy Awards in queue, no other month offers more televised entertainment. ABC boasts an Oscars’ night viewership in 225 countries making it one of the most widely viewed telecasts after the Super Bowl and other NFL-related broadcasts. Whether you are watching for the Red Carpet hoopla, the controversial dress, or to determine if it is finally Leo’s year, the 88th Oscars are sure to deliver. Although quality cinematography seems exclusive to Hollywood, filmmakers are drawn to the Pacific Northwest for its feasible production costs and serene backdrops. It is anticipated that nearly 40 million Americans will tune in again this year as Chris Rock hosts this annual event to honor supreme cinematic achievement. Hollywood and its fans from around the world will be waiting in eager anticipation as each presenter utters the words “and the Oscar goes to…” Will the force be with Leo this year for his work in “The Revenant”? Will someone please give that man an Oscar! Critics will be watching for the Red Carpet showcase of dresses as actresses make their way down a runway that can make or break their career. Nothing sets social media more ablaze than a dress. The world is preoccupied with the insatiable need for entertainment and certainly can obsess over stardom. I didn’t think I fit this mold until I encountered 2008 Oscar nominee, Viggo Mortensen. What does one say to an Oscar nominee? You introduce yourself and say something where your only option is to retreat to your vehicle with
a desire to punch thy own-self in the face. I had a second opportunity to meet him and he remembered my name. I like to make an impact wherever I go. I don’t know that Viggo gets enough credit for what he endures. Of all of Mr. Mortensen’s films, I deem Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic drama, “The Road,” partially filmed in Oregon to be one of the most thought-provoking films from 2009. My cinematic critical approach is not very complex; I gauge the quality of a movie by my ability to avert the prospect of nodding off. This two-hour drama is so profound and emotionally provoking that I not only remained alert through its entirety but for the next six years in its aftermath. To cultivate the intensity of the film, the producers utilized the serene backdrop of Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon. No place on Earth gives such chilling plausibility to a disturbing plot than the misty Oregon Coast. Of all of the movies filmed in the Pacific Northwest, the 1985 cult classic “The Goonies” has as many as 1,000 visitors a day flocking to Astoria, Oregon. The premise of the movie entails a group of pre-teens that set out in search of a hidden pirate’s treasure to save their home from foreclosure. Sadly for “Goonies” everywhere, Mikey’s house was closed to visitors by the owner in June 2015. Maybe it was that 1,000 people approached their personal residence each day. Where other than sleepy, yet mysterious Astoria, Oregon could Steven Spielberg conjure the quaintness of the small town of Goondocks? “The Goonies” isn’t the only flick to cast teen characters in a film created in the Pacific Northwest that would

The mystical feel of Cannon Beach, Oregon is difficult to rival when fostering a supernatural plot. The only thing colder than a misty Oregon beach is quite possibly Edward’s handshake. Nevertheless, nearly 4 million people watched “Twilight” on its opening night and Fandango reports that five tickets were sold each second. It was third for pre-sold ticket sales, only behind “Star Wars Episode III” and “The Dark Night.” Fans of Sean Penn’s adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction book, “Into the Wild,” might be interested to know that it was filmed in parts of Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The premise of the story is based upon the travels and untimely death of Emory University graduate, Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch). The film includes a robust soundtrack from Seattle’s rock legend Eddie Vedder. Instead of embracing an illustrious and prolific
career, McCandless leaves all of his finances, possessions and family behind. He reinvents himself as Alexander Supertramp and sets out on a cross country adventure. Eventually, he makes his way through the Pacific Northwest and into the Alaskan wilderness. The Pacific Northwest’s repertoire of films is not complete without “Sleepless in Seattle.” The romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks has forever linked the minds of movie buffs to the Queen City. We could venture to suggest that “Fifty Shades of Grey” is the contemporary and darker twin that “binds” our minds to a Seattle cinematic love story. Either way, both films pack a powerhouse punch when it comes to movie-making. Hollywood production companies aren’t the only contributors to the big screen. Tacoma’s Fireshoe Productions was founded in 2007 as a feature film and full-service media production company. Owners Eric Colley and Hallie Shepherd are both native to Western

Washington. Colley states, “We shot our first film in the Tacoma area and have been here ever since. It’s a great area that feels like a small town but still has the city feel to it as well.” Fireshoe recently released a World War II action/drama titled “The Last Rescue” that stars Cody Kasch (“Desperate Housewives”) as Private Lewis. “The Last Rescue” is currently

Don’t be afraid to get creative — play with the clothes you have to see what pieces work for layering.

There are times when you bundle up in your favorite sweater only to find yourself overheated the minute you step into a restaurant with a hot date. Then what? This is the beauty of layering. FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN Heart Month and no nutrient is more associated with heart health than our dear friend, Fat. Fat tends to generate the most confusion too. We’ve all heard the simple dietary advice, “Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and avoid trans and saturated fats.” The dogma is so ingrained in our culture that we automatically associate “saturated fat” with “artery clogging” and “unhealthy.” But it’s not so black and white; not all fats are created equal and many deserve their place at the table once again. They were discovered in 1952 when the invention of gas-liquid chromatography allowed scientists to differentiate between types of fat in foods. Unsaturated Fats Over time, we’ve identified “healthy” fats, like olives, avocados, nuts, seeds and oils derived from them and continue to shun the fat of animals. Unsaturated fats, both poly- and mono-, are fatty acids that generally remain liquid at room temperature.

The Fear of Fats In 1955, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered his first of many heart attacks, his cardiologist announced, at a national televised press conference, that Americans need to quit smoking, reduce stress and cut down on dietary fat and cholesterol. This advice was prematurely based on observational studies conducted by Ancel Keys. Keys was just beginning his epidemiological studies that observed total cholesterol in blood, intake of fat in diet and the health of the heart. He drew an over-simplified direct cause-and-effect theory, “the cholesterol hypothesis,” that fat in the diet elevates cholesterol in the blood and leads to heart disease. And so, America’s fear of fat began… long before the opportunity to study different types of fatty acid’s effect on human health, we had already viewed it all as bad. Clearing the Air In 2014, the largest meta-analysis related to heart disease and fats was conducted, reviewing over 76 studies and concluding “current evidence does not clearly support cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of total saturated fats.” This study led the American Heart Association to drop all cholesterol guidelines in February 2015 after 50-plus years of research revealed that the intake of dietary cholesterol had no effect whatsoever on blood cholesterol, but it remains a battle of saturated versus unsaturated fats.
They found that although total saturated fat content of the meat did not change, the types of saturated fats did. They found grass-fed cows produced meat with high levels of cholesterolneutral saturated fats like stearic acid. Grainfeed beef had significantly higher proportions of cholesterol-elevating saturated fatty acids such as myristic and palmitic acids. The same results were found in pasture-raised vs. grainbased chicken eggs. The Bottom Line At the end of the day, fat is not our major dilemma. What the food industry has replaced fat calories with, carbohydrates from refined grains and sugar, is (but that’s for another day). In the meantime, always go for high-quality sources of fats such as avocados, unrefined oils, nuts, seeds, organic and grass-fed meat and dairy, wild fish, extra virgin olive oil and pasture-raised eggs. Try to avoid highly-refined oils such as canola, soybean, cottonseed, vegetable and corn oils.
Saturated Fatty Acids, Not Created Equal Coconut oil is often demonized for being a saturated fat but the types of saturated fatty acids, caprylic and lauric acid, are beneficial; anti-viral, anti-bacterial and known to raise “good” HDL cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that the way a product was grown, raised or processed dramatically influences the fatty acid composition of that product. In a review published by Nutrition Journal in 2010, scientists compared the fatty acid profiles of grain-fed vs. grass-fed beef.

IT HAD BEEN a long time since I went on a run, but yesterday I broke the ice and took a jog. The busyness and joys of being a new dad had distracted me from some of the healthy habits I had developed as a single young man. I did not push myself too hard; I followed the ins and outs of my breath and noticed the sensations of muscles tightening and lengthening throughout my body. I admired the towering evergreen trees, swirling white clouds and splashes of blue in the sky, as I noticed the squish of soggy, decomposing dirt and pine needles under my shoes. This was a lovely winter evening run in the Pacific Northwest! The mindful observation described above is a central technique for deepening the experience with an activity and bringing compassionate awareness, where selfjudgment could easily creep in. Instead of falling into critical habits of the mind such as, “You are so slow and unhealthy,” I turned my bare attention to the sensations within my body and the sights around me. Likewise, the mindfulness practice was an antidote for worrying. Instead of spending my run thinking about future to-do lists, I was able to actually enjoy rest and relaxation from the run. I paid attention, was in the present moment with curiosity, non-judgment, awe and acceptance, and that transformed the experience into joy instead of a chore. Some activities can be challenging to turn into a habit. Nevertheless, whether harmful or helpful, habits are ingrained into the fabric of our lives. Our habits become instinctual, like grabbing a cheeseburger in between picking up the kids and paying the bills. Habits can be hard to change when we are on autopilot, but they can be changed. When we structure the content of our lives to be in alignment with our deepest values, the motivation to change becomes much easier.

We are intrinsically motivated and energized by clearly seeing what is most important to us. When we combine this clarity in values with mindfulness, we also clear out self-judgments that would otherwise leave us feeling stuck in the mud. With mindful awareness, we slow down knee-jerk reactions and become free to pursue that which makes us healthy and happy. Habits with food are a specific area that can quickly leave us feeling sluggish and stuck. Beyond that, without eating whole foods that span every color in the rainbow, our bodies are left without the nutritional building blocks it needs to feel good, fight off disease and think clearly. Alternatively, when we do have the right nutrition and moderate activity, our bodies can deal with everyday stress and illness. Mindful awareness clears out worries about failure and brings us into the present experience, more able to choose habits we want. The outcome is ultimately greater freedom. Try It Out • The next time you are active, repeatedly bring your attention to the sensations within your body or the sights and sounds around you. When your mind wanders, bring attention back to your present sensory experience. No other mental chatter is necessary. • Take a moment to write down the things that are most important to you and choose one that feels most exciting. WHETHER YOU ARE A teacher or a parent to a child or adolescent, connections are imperative in order for relationships to exist. You do not have to be a yoga teacher to incorporate yoga tools as part of your every day. Most of yoga lies in the simple yet complex thing that keeps us alive – breathing. Yoga has this profound ability to connect mind, body and spirit through breath and movement. When children feel safe, heard and understood, their capacity and yearning for connection and knowledge expands. When we can connect, we get to discuss fundamental things such as emotional regulation, self-awareness and turning inward to find calm in an overstimulated world. You will quickly experience the subtle yet profound changes of mind and body that happens within you as well. Practicing the simple act of breathing with your child in a time of a meltdown or a chaotic day gives you the chance to follow a path that benefits both of you. If connection doesn’t come easy to you or your child, remember that simply breathing creates compassion and provides you opportunities to be present with your child. Breathing allows you to “connect and redirect.” As Daniel Siegel, a professor of clinical psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute suggests, combining the left and right brain provides clarity and understanding by using the logical left brain and the emotional right brain. When your child is upset, they are functioning in their part of the brain known as the limbic system, operating on the emotional level where the only way to get
through is emotionally. Once you have met your child emotionally through connection, you can then begin to use logic and problem solving to get both of your needs met. It is important to remember, as Siegel says, “ no matter how nonsensical and frustrating our child’s feelings may seem to us, they are real and important to our child. It’s vital that we treat them as such in our response.” Yoga Ed. is an educational company dedicated to changing education through the practice of yoga. Below are provided step-bystep instructions. Try these two yoga breathing exercises: Balloon Breath – Place one or both hands on your belly and breathe deeply. Inhale, feeling your belly rise. Exhale and feel the belly lower. Invite children to imagine their bellies like a balloon. As they breathe, they blow their balloon up into their hands. As they breathe out, they deflate their balloon away from their hands. Lion Breath - To release excess energy or tension. Sitting tall in your body, imagine you are a lion waiting to pounce. Inhale through your nose. Exhale with a roar, opening your mouth wide and stick your tongue out, bringing your hands to the sides of your face, fingers spread apart (like a lion’s mane). 3 medium artichokes 3 lemons 1-1/2 cups chicken broth 1 cup white wine or cooking wine 1 tablespoon Litehouse® Instantly Fresh Garlic 1 bay leaf 2/3 cup shaved or grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup garlic crouton crushed into crumbs 4 – 6 ounces Litehouse® Organic Caesar Dressing
Put it Together 1. Prepare artichokes by first washing under water and shaking dry. Next, cut off stems and remove small lower leaves with paring knife. With larger knife, cut 1/2” off the top of artichokes to remove the prickly spines. Use kitchen shears to snip

off remaining spines on lower leaves. 2. Cut one lemon in half and rub on exposed areas of artichoke to prevent oxidization. 3. Pour broth, wine, garlic and bay leaf into bottom of 4 quart slow cooker. Place artichokes, bottom side down into slow cooker. 4. Cut second lemon into slices and place a slice on top of each artichoke. Add remaining slices of that lemon to the broth mixture. 5. Put lid on slow cooker and cook on high for approximately 3 hours, or until softened and leaves pull off easily. 6. Transfer artichokes from liquid to serving platter. While still hot, gently squeeze to pull apart leaves and stuff with bits of Parmesan cheese and crouton crumbs. Sprinkle remaining cheese and crumbs on tops of artichokes. 7. Drizzle artichokes with Litehouse® Organic Caesar Dressing and serve with third lemon that has been cut up into wedges.

A CROWN JEWEL Glacier National Park

AMERICA IS A land of contrasting features; it’s what makes it beautiful. We are bordered by the world’s greatest oceans, and within our country you find jagged peaks, rugged canyons, rolling prairies and lush green forest. Here there are rivers that meander lazily through dense swamp and others much more torrent that have cut into the earth for millennia. There are lands that stay frozen under ice and deserts so hot that very little life inhabits the vastness. As the great migration West picked up steam in the 1800s, settlers, prospectors, pioneers, homesteaders and fortune seekers stumbled upon a landscape towering in stature compared to their upbringing along the Atlantic and across the Great Plains. Despite the rush to claim land for homes and mountains for riches, many recognized the incredible uniqueness of the West, realizing that much of this land should stay unspoiled for all to enjoy. Americans pioneered the idea of preserving land and on March 1, 1872, the Yellowstone National Park Act was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. The act established the world’s first

National Park “dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Yellowstone paved the way for the creation of the National Parks Service and the more than 500 parks, preserves, monuments, sites, historic places, and trails it oversees today. The National Parks Service celebrates its centennial this August and has grown to more than 22,000 employees, and 221,000 passionate people volunteer at these places each year. Each site has its own story, reason and beauty but only one is given the distinguished title; “Crown Jewel of the Continent.” Glacier National Park in Montana has come to symbolize the American West; beautiful and potentially dangerous, yet full of life, contrast and solitude. Before being established in 1910 as the tenth National Park, Glacier was home to the Blackfeet, Salish and Kootenai tribes. buffalo migrations in the surrounding prairies. With the completion of the Great Northern Railway, and photos of the landscape appearing in newspapers all across the country, visitors began coming to the area in droves. Tourists saw Glacier as a homegrown version of the Swiss Alps and could travel much more quickly by rail west than by steamer east to Europe. Great alpine lodges were constructed in Bavarian style which still stand today. The Prince of Wales Hotel, built by the Great Northern Railway, sits like a castle on top of Waterton Lake and is a massive piece of history itself. Here you can enjoy stunning views, hop on a ferry to explore the Canadian side of the park, and enjoy the British tradition of afternoon tea served daily. Built in 1913, also by Great Northern, the Glacier Park Lodge is stunningly preserved at more than 100 years old. The lobby is incredibly impressive, and many guests spend a majority of their time here reading a book or learning more about the local history. There is also a spa, pool, restaurant and two 9-hole golf courses. Even if you are staying outside the park in nearby Whitefish, Kalispell or Columbia Falls, a quick lunch or dinner break at any of the park’s accommodations shouldn’t be missed. For those definitely wanting to stay inside the park, you should plan on booking your stay at least six months in advance as rooms fill up very quickly especially weekends. Entering the park from either the east or west side, you will almost surely traverse one of the most beautiful drives in the country, the Going-to-the-Sun Road. For those who have come by plane or train, there is a free shuttle system offered by the park that makes multiple stops. These shuttles run July 1 through Labor Day, weather permitting. These are popular with hikers and campers who don’t want to leave their vehicle inside the park for days at a time. A favorite of many visitors is to take a red bus tour of the park. Experienced guides bring you all around the park in vintage 1930s buses. The buses have large windows, and weather permitting, the roofs can be peeled back giving you incredible vertical views as you pass through the park. For those making the Going-to-theSun Road drive themselves, get ready for a very wild ride. The road is slow and always
ascend, you are treated to the site of rugged peaks, beautiful forest and waterfalls, many spilling onto the roadway. You might get so lucky as to spot a mountain goat, big horn sheep, elk, moose or grizzly bear. Once you reach Logan Pass, you can stop in the visitors’ center, embark off on a number of short hiking trails and see high alpine lakes, flowers and wildlife. Crews spend all spring continually plowing mountains of snow off the roadway in hopes of getting the pass open in June. It can snow every month of the year here, so be prepared for anything as you head up the pass. busy as onlookers are mesmerized by the surrounding scenery. While being the most popular, there is much more to Glacier than the Going-tothe-Sun Road. The park is a backpacker’s dream with more than 700 miles of hiking trails to explore. There are 13 easy access campgrounds throughout and many more designated camping areas in the backcountry. Off the beaten path you will find an even more spectacular landscape. The backcountry is bear country so hikers need to take every precaution in storing

food and should carry bear spray as well. For this reason, dogs are not allowed in the park. Those not wanting to get too deep in the wilderness can book all sorts of tours from fishing and whitewater rafting, to mountain biking and bird watching. According to the National Parks Service, there were approximately 150 glaciers in the park area in 1850. By 1968, there were around 50, and today there are only 25 designated glaciers left. The U.S. Geological Survey studies of the park’s glaciers estimate that if global warming trends continue at the current rate, all could disappear by 2030, leaving a beautiful landscape behind but nothing left of the great glaciers that carved this area into such a special place. Seeing these glaciers up close as a young child inspired my own personal western migration and appreciation for the beautiful surroundings I have grown to call home. While Glacier Park will remain for generations, the window is closing to see something truly remarkable up close. Your trip to Glacier will leave you in awe, with a greater appreciation of the natural settings around you and a new realization of how really small we are in such a great big world.
