Why not make the box do double duty by adding essential oils? Grapefruit, lime, bergamot or lemongrass will give your fridge a fresh scent. Hint: Sprinkle a little of the baking soda mixed with essential oils into your garbage can to freshen it, too. Brighten your DIY cleaning products. Ditch the chemicals lurking in store-bought cleaning supplies and make your own infused with intoxicating scents! Once you try it, you'll never go back to commercial cleaners. And it's easier than you might think. Give it to them before you go by making sure the litter box or the yard is clean and that you've picked up as much clutter as possible. Wash the blankets that adorn their favorite sleeping places and make sure the space is ready for their use. • A little TV time. If commotion is the name of the game in your home, a house that is suddenly too quiet could have a negative impact on your pet. To alleviate this concern, leave the television on in one of the rooms so your pet can enjoy a little noise in the background. Just make sure you choose a room that is different from where your pet often sleeps so they can comfortably avoid the sound if they want to. • Leave a little bit of yourself. Is it possible to be in two places at once? In some ways, yes. Leaving items out that smell like you— laundry or blankets, for example—can be a wonderful source of comfort in instances when your pet is feeling stressed. Just remember that if your pet likes to chew, these items could be their first target, so only leave things you're comfortable losing. Having a pet doesn't mean you need to put your summer plans on hold; it just adds another layer to your planning process. Apply the tips above, and you and your pet will be happy and comfortable until the trip is over and you're reunited.

ou may know victims of financial elder abuse. According to a new Elder Needs Survey, almost half of Americans do.
As you read or hear stories about seniors being financially exploited, you may think: Not me, I would never fall prey to that in my old age. Your parents? Same thing. They are too smart and too vigilant to be taken for a ride by a con artist or an unprincipled relative or caretaker. This perception is only natural. When we are young, we never picture ourselves, or our parents, in decline. We are told 60 is the new 40, and 80 is the new 50. Perhaps so, but as some of the recent survey data bears out, we may be overconfident in our ability to evade financial scams as we age. Nearly 800 Americans aged 60 and older were asked if they believed senior citizens were vulnerable to financial abuse. Ninety-eight percent of the respondents said yes, but 81 percent were confident that it would never happen to them. Just 10 percent thought they were susceptible to such exploitation, and only 24 percent even worried about the possibility. The surveyors also contacted nearly 800 Americans aged 45 to 59 with elderly parents, and 75 percent of these Gen Xers and baby boomers felt their moms and dads would never succumb to such fraud. In short: Financial elder abuse might happen to other people someday, but not to us. This assumption may be flawed—after all, half the people contacted said that they knew elders who had been financially exploited. Any perception that strangers are committing most of these crimes may be equally unfounded. The Jewish Council for the Aging states that 66 percent of financial elder abuse is carried out by family members, friends or trusted third parties.

In May, President Trump signed the Senior Safe Act into law. This legislation guides banks and investment firms to train their financial professionals to spot and report what appears to be shady financial activity. With its roots in blues, bluegrass, country, folk, R&B and jazz, this is a music festival the entire family of all ages will enjoy. Held at South Kitsap Southern Little League Ballfield (5795 Hovgaard Road in Olalla), gates open at 10am with the music starting at 10:30am and continuing until dusk. This year's guest host is Cindi Rinehart from Seattle's long-running talk show “Northwest Afternoon” on KOMO-TV. Cindi, who is a two-time Emmy Award winner, will bring a bundle of personality and pizzazz to this year's Festival. Food and craft vendors will be on site, along with a beer garden, berry pie contest and auction, and attendees will have the chance to buy cds directly from the musicians after they perform! To add to the family friendly
atmosphere, there will be a variety of activities for kids including face painting, giant bubblemaking and the popular Children's Parade. “This year we're adding an Artists Alley to our vendor lineup,” says Kelly Hughes, public relations for the Festival. “This will feature fine artists and local authors. The Artists Alley will also feature a Mermaid Photo Booth where people can pose with a mermaid and snap pics on their phones to share on social media. And we have more bands this year, too, including Ava Adams, Mark Kroos, Uncle Bonsai, Junkyard Jane, Daring Greatly, Tammy Frost Trio, Jim Valley Project, Dodgy Mountain Men, Downtown Mountain Boys, and Billy Shew and the Spanktones.” Last year’s event welcomed about 800 people, and this year they are expecting even more. magine that you are in the hospital. You appreciate the medical care and are glad that you are about to be released—but you don’t have clothes to wear home.
Maybe your clothes were cut off of you or you got blood on the clothes you wore in and no one is available to bring you clean ones. Anthony’s Closet is a service at St. Anthony Hospital that provides brand new clothing such as sweatpants, shirts, sweatshirts and underwear for no charge to patients being discharged from the hospital who, for whatever reason, do not have clothes to wear home. But clothes can mean more than just the shirt on your back.

“It’s to support the patient’s dignity, health and comfort,” explains Carol Arjo, current president of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. The Auxiliary is an all-volunteer group that manages the Closet. Currently numbering 28 members, its members work to support St. Anthony Hospital and the Gig Harbor community. Any patient in the hospital who needs clothes to go home will get them from the Closet. The hospital staff can request clothes from the supervisor, head nurse or chaplain’s office. Security staff gives hospital staff access to the Closet to get the necessary clothes, meaning that any time, day or night, the Closet is open to provide clothing for patients. Just how many patients need this service? In 2017 alone the Closet provided clothes for 379 patients. That’s 743 items of clothing in one year! That’s a lot of clothes—and the demands on the Closet are expected to grow. Earlier this year St. Anthony Hospital opened a new floor that will increase the overall patient capacity of the hospital by a whopping 40 percent. The Auxiliary anticipates this increase is

What does the Auxiliary do when they aren’t managing Anthony’s Closet?
“We spend $4,000 a year now,” says Arjo. “And with the Fifth Floor opening I’m sure that’s going to go up. We buy the cheapest clothes we can, but they still cost a lot.”
They have been meeting since 2008, before St. Anthony Hospital even opened. They support patients and the hospital by doing everything from making decorative tray favors to brighten the patient’s day (which they have done every month since 2009!) to buying activity books and crayons for the children who come to the Emergency Department. They have also spent their own personal money to buy Christmas gifts for community children in need.
Sometimes community groups will donate new clothing, but the vast majority of the money to keep the Closet stocked comes from fundraising by the members of the Auxiliary. They have bake sales at the hospital every spring and fall. Every member of the Auxiliary and some of the hospital staff make baked goods, and anyone from hospital staff to the public can buy them. The $800 to $1,000 raised annually from these yummy fundraisers is dedicated solely to the Closet. “The hospital and its employees really supports us, and so does the community,” says Arjo. “If you want to support us, come to a bake sale!” Additional funds come from their annual fundraising events. Generally the annual fundraisers support a wide array of hospital needs, but the last two have been dedicated specifically to funding Anthony’s Closet.
In addition to the patient-centered work the Auxiliary does, each year they also provide two $1,000 scholarships for St. Anthony Hospital employees to further their medical education. Between running Anthony’s Closet, fundraising and everything else, the Auxiliary takes on a lot of work, but it is a labor of love—and fun! “We have fun, yes we do,” says Arjo. “We enjoy it. It’s a good group of people who just get along well. We all have the same focus, we’re here to help and do whatever we can do.”
“Our purpose is to support the hospital and help the community in any way that we can,” notes Arjo. “Most of our annual fundraising efforts, prior to the last two, have been brunches at Anthony’s restaurant. They brought in anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 each time.“
So rest easy knowing that if you find yourself in St. Anthony needing some clothes, the Auxiliary has got your back.

F
or Melissa Tolman, turning negative feelings on a particular subject into positive ones is something that brings her great joy. Tolman recently wrapped up her 13th year as an educator with the last four as a fifth grade teacher at Purdy Elementary, where she handles multiple subjects like science, social studies and writing. One of the more challenging subjects for many of her students is math. Problems become a little tougher to solve and some kids reach the point of complete frustration, but Tolman doesn’t let them give up. “I love helping them see they are all capable of being mathematicians and can all be good at it,” she said. “I pride myself in the fact that most of my students now love math and would say it’s their favorite subject.” Tolman uses real-world applications in her math curriculum to show children that math is a skill they will use and need on a daily basis throughout their lives. “Math is my favorite subject to teach, and I enjoy seeing students make connections to real-world situations and to be able to explain their thinking,” she said. “I think it’s important for them to see how they can use the math they are learning and the importance of it.” While many lessons stick, having a great impact
on a young person’s future is also something that brings Tolman great pride. Several years ago she was teaching kindergarten and was brought up to first grade the following year. Many of the kids she had in kindergarten were with her again. A parent of one of those children, now in ninth grade, reached out to her to say she was her all-time favorite teacher and would love to see her at high school graduation in a couple years.

“It warmed my heart to know she still remembered me after all those years and felt strongly enough to reach out to me and let me know how much I meant to them,” said Tolman. Whether stuck on a math problem, proper spelling or grammar and punctuation, Tolman always encourages her students to work through it—and not give up. “I try to help my students take these challenges on as learning opportunities. I want my students to know they can achieve whatever they put their minds to, as long as they put in hard work and practice,” she said. By teaching young minds perseverance through adversity, Tolman hopes to have a lasting impact on all of her students so that they might find success in whatever they choose in life.

Mollie Hoff is the chief operating officer of the Lakefield Veterinary Group and has lived in the Gig Harbor community for many years. She had a vision—to bring a 24-hour facility to the community. Valenti joined the Lakefield family several years back and, she too, had always envisioned a 24-hour facility that combined general practice and emergency and after-hours care to best serve the community. “I relocated to Gig Harbor from the Twin Cities area of Minnesota in February of 2018 as medical director at Uptown Animal Hospital because it completely aligned with my goal,” says Dr. Valenti.
Uptown Animal Hospital and the Lakefield Group have also united with World Vets in Gig Harbor to help injured marine mammals that may need veterinary care. In addition, on a more global level with World Vets, the Lakefield Group sent members of their team to Nicaragua to help family owned pets with wellness checks, spaying and neutering. This is becoming an annual event for the group, and Dr. Valenti had the privilege of participating last year where she and a team of 16 volunteers did more than 250 community wellness exams, spayed and neutered almost 250 family owned cats and dogs, and vaccinated 500 pets for World Rabies Day.
Together, she and Lakefield Veterinary Group are able to serve the Gig Harbor community in a more "full service" capacity.

GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS

n 2000, people in Gig Harbor were introduced to the Paradise Theatre, an idea many years in the making. For 19 seasons, locals have been entertained with a wide range of shows both familiar and unconventional. The early days the theatre was located in the old Peacock family house. “We turned it into a Cabaret Dinner Theatre presenting indoor dinner shows from September through May as well as an annual haunted house in October. There was also an outdoor amphitheatre for summer outdoor performances and concerts,” recalled Vicki Richards, executive artistic director. Unfortunately the original venue of the Paradise
Theatre was not able to become its permanent home. The outdoor area became too dense, and the 100-year-old building was unable to have anything grandfathered in when it was revealed it needed several major upgrades. This wasn’t the end of the Paradise Theatre, however, as it was able to find a new home on Burnham Drive where a recently closed Christian School and small church on property provided space for theatre productions and arts education courses. Ten years went by when all of a sudden the Paradise was in need of a new space yet again, this time to make way for an upcoming housing development.

As fortunes would align, Paradise was able to secure a year-to-year lease inside the old Rexall Pharmacy downtown, which had been vacant for five years. The company set to work upgrading, adding restrooms and building it out into a vision of what they hoped it could be, but news soon came that this would not become its permanent home either. The owners had plans to tear down the building for more housing.

postponed until 2021. That was quite a relief to us. The bad news was getting notification that our rent was more than quadrupling starting in October,” said Richards. As a small 501(c)3 nonprofit community theatre, the increase in rent is not something that can be absorbed, so a mission to build and create a space with help from the community is underway. Through a four-phase plan, Paradise Theatre is seeking to raise $120,000 in which to build an infrastructure to an existing structure and secure a permanent home. The build would include around 200 to 250 seats, a lobby, kitchen, dance/rehearsal/green room and support space. Richards says having these additional spaces would help the nonprofit drum up additional funds as well.
“There are other arts groups that have a need for this size space for recitals, concerts, fundraisers, film festivals, etc. We get requests regularly but are too small for many groups and don't have a kitchen at our current space,” she said. The Paradise Theatre has met with Mayor Kit Kuhn and spoke to the city council asking to either help fund or support a new space, knowing full well the difficulties of raising large sums of money. Ultimately the theatre recognizes that it is in the hands of the community, whether or not they will be able to continue their mission of quality live theatre and education courses or if their run has come to an end. Since its inception, the theatre has not only entertained thousands of patrons at some of the

lowest ticket prices of any live entertainment but has taught and inspired hundreds of students in classes not found in your typical K-12 curriculum. “Our educational opportunities for youth provide a training ground for those who will go on to films, movies and Broadway,” said Richards. “Many students learn how to speak in public and gain confidence as well as an appreciation for the arts.” Summer Theatre Camp gives kids the opportunity to get on stage, discover hidden talents, leadership and meet new friends. Paradise Theatre partners with local businesses and restaurants, encouraging patronage before and after shows while also donating tickets to

families and other nonprofits so everyone in the community has a chance to experience live theatre. “The most rewarding part is teaching the kids and watching them develop into these wonderful, confident, talented adults,” said Richards. “We have been doing this for so long that they are bringing their children in now to experience what they did 10 or 15 years ago.” The Capital Campaign continues today and is still short of its goal. The Theatre is encouraging anyone who doesn’t want to lose the last community theatre in Gig Harbor to donate whatever they are able, as even small amounts continue to get them closer to the ultimate goal. For Richards and the board of directors, the hope is that they will be able to continue providing enrichment in the community for decades to come. “We need your help; every city needs a live community theatre. The arts and arts education are the lifeblood of a community’s expression,

growth and imagination,” she said. The Paradise Theatre was never intended to become a company without a permanent home and hopes that will change when the Capital Campaign is reached. A facility of their own will provide the same great performance in a comfortable setting while also creating a space that can be utilized by other groups in the community. Richards says the support that continues to come in every day helps keep them focused on their mission. “The people we work with on our shows are dedicated performers as is our dedicated board of directors. Many of our regular guests have followed Paradise from place to place; it's like throwing a party every night for them. Everyone is there to have a good time,” she said. Harbor Heritage Collaborative Exhibit showcases rich regional history

f you haven’t had a chance to see the most recent exhibit at the Harbor History Museum, there is still time to see an amazing piece of Gig Harbor history up close. The "Salmon, Seiners and Life on the Sea" exhibit continues through September 16. The collaboration between the Gig Harbor BoatShop, Harbor History Museum, Skansie Netshed Foundation and Harbor WildWatch explores that past and present of the Puget Sound salmon fisheries and the generations that still fish the waters today The focal point of the exhibit is the Avalon. Launched in 1929 from the Skansie Ship Building Co., the Avalon was used by the Skansie family for more than six decades.
Locals could find it moored near the center of town near other well-known seiners like Genius, Victory, Veteran and Shenandoah. In 2015, after sinking in Hood Canal, the Avalon was declared derelict and scheduled for demolition. The BoatShop partnered with the Department of Natural Resources to save it from the wrecking ball and instead thoughtfully deconstructed the historic vessel. This process allowed The BoatShop to recover artifacts which are featured in the museum. These include Avalon’s iconic wheelhouse. Dismantling Avalon piece by piece also allowed The BoatShop to develop accurate construction plans detailed enough to build

a Skansie purse seiner, significant because there are no known construction drawings for this vessel. Along with the Avalon wheelhouse, the exhibit features a brief history of the Skansie Ship Building Co. as well as a story skiff, a scaleddown version of a seine skiff that would have been used to set the net. The Fishing Life and Sustainable Fisheries portion of the exhibit features key innovations that impacted the fishing industry. Also featured in the exhibit is a map of various fisheries and tips for what we can do to help save the salmon.

here are many reasons people choose to make Gig Harbor their home: the friendliness of the community, the beauty of the surrounding area, the multitude of opportunities to be involved and more. But for many, being on the water is something that is the driving force. For both residents and tourists, the Waterfront Walking Tours have provided a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this area, both past and present. In its fourth year, the Waterfront Walking Tours are sponsored by the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Harbor WildWatch and the Harbor History Museum, all of whom work together
in a supportive relationship for the betterment of Gig Harbor. “The Alliance has an excellent relationship with both organizations. Harbor WildWatch participates in our annual Chalk the Harbor event, has a booth at our Waterfront Farmers Market each week and participates in our popular Sip and Stroll events,” said Josh Sherwin, special projects coordinator at Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “Also, we have held our annual Wine and Food Festival at the Harbor History Museum for seven years.” According to Sherwin, those who have

participated in the Waterfront Walking Tours are approximately half local residents and half tourists. “The tours are also a great way for new residents to learn about the heritage of their community,” said Sherwin. Lindsey Stover, executive director for Harbor WildWatch, said the idea for the walking tours came about after Josh Sherwin attended a Main Street Conference a few years back. He attended a walking tour that the host city was delivering and thought it would be a great addition to Gig Harbor. “He presented the idea at the DWA Promotions Meeting back in 2014,” said Stover. “Harbor WildWatch was planning to create a number of wildlife tours

Of course, the museum was a natural fit for this partnership and they promptly signed as well.” In addition to a history lesson, Sherwin said another popular aspect of the tours is an opportunity for people to meet others. “At the start of the tours, no one really knows each other, but by the time the tour is over, new friendships and camaraderie have developed, and this is due largely in part to the personalities and approach of our tour guides giving the tours,” said Sherwin. The popularity of the tours has increased, and it was not long after starting in 2015 that the Washington State Main Street Program awarded the three organizations an Excellence on Main Award – Outstanding Promotional Event for the Waterfront Walking Tours. There are two different tours that people can choose from, both of which are led by volunteers with the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Harbor

WildWatch and the Harbor History Museum. The original tour, Harbor Heritage: Then and Now, is offered each Saturday morning through August 25. The tour begins at 10am at the Maritime Pier at 3003 Harborview Drive and lasts two hours. Suitable for all ages, this tour provides a look at the founding families, pioneering industries as well as the wildlife and natural resources that brought the community together. It also gives one a glimpse into what life may have been like in the Harbor in the early days and how the past may have influenced where we are today. New this year is a one-hour Wednesday evening tour that begins at 5:30pm. This tour, unlike the Harbor Heritage Tour, is geared toward adults. Enjoy an evening stroll along the waterfront, beginning at the entrance to the Harbor History Museum, and learn about net sheds and the historic fishing fleet as well as the effects of prohibition in the harbor both in the past and present. The tour concludes at the Heritage Distilling Company.

“Adults enjoy ending the Skiffs to Spirits Tour at Heritage Distilling,” said Sherwin. They recently updated their two tours, something Sherwin credits Rachel Easton of Harbor WildWatch with. “She recently became a certified interpreter and has brought best practices to our 12 tour guides when referencing and discussing the history of the native population and the Salish Sea,” said Sherwin. Although they have discussed adding a new tour, they have yet to make a final decision. “We have multiple ideas, including touring historic home sites, a spooky Halloween tour and something we call ‘Maker Tours’; tours that visit local downtown businesses to learn how things are made at those businesses,” said Sherwin. “There’s an awful lot of creativity taking place at many businesses downtown, and we think these tours would help bring awareness of this to our local community and visitors.” Although the tours are presented June through August, Sherwin said they can offer the tour any time of the year so long as it is arranged in advance. And depending upon the audience, they can tailor the tours to the specific group. The good news is they haven’t turned anyone away and they always have two guides on each tour, one of whom is an expert from Harbor WildWatch. “Our largest group so far was about 40 people. Our guides use a microphone when they speak so they are easy for all to hear,” said Sherwin. And … the tours are free! Whether you are a local and want to learn more about the community you call home or a visitor, these tours are something to put on your list! Fun and informative, you will not only learn more about Gig Harbor’s past and present, but you may meet a few new friends along the way! We all have our own little support group who can make a tremendous impact on our success and outlook. Those voices can absolutely make or break our plans as we move forward.

More important than that, and the point of this writing, is to consider the foremost voice that is with you every minute of every day—your own. When you are exploring your existence and future, what are you saying to yourself? Are you excited about your prospects and ability to succeed? Are you encouraging and supportive of your past, especially your mistakes? If you’re like most people I work with, you are not. In fact, you’re probably hardest on yourself than anyone else you know—in some cases, dramatically so.
Think about it for a second. You’ve probably got some influential people in your life that you think about and make decisions based on their opinions, encouragement or lack thereof. When you decide to do or not do something, whose consideration are you wondering about? You can probably even hear their voice in your head.
This is incredibly unfortunate and a difficult obstacle to overcome. You should be your own biggest fan. You should be your best coach.

What if you had a friend who, every time you made a mistake, said, “You are so stupid. Why do you keep doing that? No wonder you can’t ever get ahead.”? That often, we don’t know something is a mistake (or success) until we finish the journey. That voice needs to unapologetically celebrate all of your successes instead of trying to moderate that elation with reasons why it’s not that special or that it’ll probably be short lived. That voice needs to treat you like someone you adore.
This is the point at which people push back and say, “Well, yeah, but I don’t want to become some egomaniac!” First of all, most of us are so far to the negative that a bit of egotism would be a good thing. Second of all, why not? Seriously, what’s wrong with being your biggest fan? You’d probably be a lot happier that way rather than seeking out approval from people whose opinions are mired in their own prejudices and issues with envy. That doesn’t mean that you have to treat people poorly or completely ignore your fellow humans; it just means that you know that you’re awesome. So here’s my advice. Next time you have a thought in regard to your behavior, outlook or life in general, spin that thought in a way that the best coach in the world would say it to you. Explain it to yourself in a way that a best friend would. Next time you find success, get excited and celebrate the heck out of it. Enjoy your new perspective—it’ll feel great!

W
e have an amazing substance in our body called hormones. Hormones are regulatory substances that cause specific cells or tissues to do a prescribed function in the body. Most people, when they think of hormones, they think of sex hormones (such as estrogen, progesterone or testosterone), brain hormones that affect moods (such as serotonin, norepinephrine/noradrenaline, GABA and dopamine) and hormones that affect blood sugar levels (such as insulin, cortisol, glucagon and others). These are only a few of the many hormones that control how healthy we are and how much energy we have. Often neglected is the quality of function of the glands and brain that produce or regulate these hormones. We have a complex system of hormonal control mechanisms in our body—collectively referred to as the Endocrine System. This system includes the following glands: hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal, housed in the brain; thyroid, parathyroids, ovaries, testes (and other reproductive tissues), pancreas and thymus, housed in the body; and the organs liver and duodenum (upper end of small intestines). Amongst these is a feedback loop that is quite intricate. What that means is that if an endocrine gland or organ produces too much of a hormone, other organs or glands respond by releasing or tapering back their hormones in response. If too little is produced the opposite occurs. It is an amazing, dynamic system that is in motion every moment of every day. Like a thermometer that continuously measures changes in temperature, the endocrine system continuously measures changes in hormones and responds appropriately to them. Sometimes the output of hormones doesn’t match the

need. That results in symptoms ranging from fatigue to increased appetite, to weight gain or loss, PMS, moodiness or any psychological imbalance, menstrual irregularities, dry skin and hair, intolerance to cold, depression, insomnia, joint pain, facial hair, brain fog, sugar or salt cravings, afternoon “crashes,” low or high blood pressure and more. That begins the search for something to “jump start” our hormones. Many choices only mask the problem and do little to take care of the source of the imbalance. BRAINS MAKING SENSE OF INCOMING INFORMATION DOES THE TYPE OF LANGUAGE MATTER TO OUR BRAINS? BY BRIANNE SALZMANN AU.D., CCC-A
D
id you know that the same areas of your brain are engaged when speaking English to your friend as communicating with American Sign Language to your friend? It is true! Spoken speech uses the same neural circuits as American Sign Language. While it would be easy to assume American Sign Language would rely heavily on visual cues and spoken English on auditory cues, that is not how our brains interpret the information. Thanks to the research of New York University, researchers were able to record the magnetic fields generated by electrical currents in the brain to document where language is interpreted in our brains. In this study, the same regions of the brain “lightup” when either language was presented. The engaged areas of the brain are called the left anterior temporal and ventromedial cortices. This area of the brain responds to language regardless of modality. Language has structure and meaning which allows us to convey understanding. So regardless of the type of language, the brain responds in very similar ways. Additionally, it is interesting to ponder how speech, hearing and language overlap regardless of the mode of communication. Successful communication is possible when the two people want to share information and figure out a way to do so! We use spoken words, visual cues, facial movements, intonation and hand gestures to make our point clear. During your next conversation, take a moment to think about the complexity of your language and how accurately you can share your thoughts. You will be amazed at how easy our minds make a challenging task. Here are a few facts about American Sign Language: • American Sign Language (ASL) is more than 200 years old. ASL was founded in 1817 at the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. • American Sign Language is more like French Sign Language than British Sign Language!

• American Sign Language is its own language meaning it has unique grammar, structure and phrasing. • Someone who uses American Sign Language may not understand British Sign Language or French Sign Language, as they are different languages. • While signing with a friend, it’s proper etiquette to look the person in the eyes rather than watch their hands. • Infants can sign their first word sooner than speak their first word. This is because gross motor skills develop before fine motor skills develop. DD and ADHD are similar but there is a difference between the two. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is used to define symptoms of inattention, distractibility and poor working memory while Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is used to define those with persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Both can interfere with daily functions and development. ADD and ADHD are real medical conditions, which can affect both children and adults. In adults with ADHD, the symptoms are not limited to the workplace, nor are they limited to school for children. Their symptoms can impact them at home, work and school and in social settings throughout their day. Health-care providers will often prescribe medication to help stimulate activity, improve alertness and reduce hyperactivity. Sometimes counseling will also be recommended to help cope with any emotional or social behaviors which may result from having ADD or ADHD. In addition to or in place of medications, their health-care provider may suggest dietary, nutritional and activity changes, meditation, yoga or massage. Reflexology can help both children and adults with some of the emotional and physical challenges that can affect those with ADD or ADHD. By using a gentle thumb-walking method to reflex the feet, hands and/or ears, all reflex points are worked on each client.
More precise attention is given to the central nervous and endocrine systems. Some research has shown a direct link in those with ADD or ADHD with these two systems. The central nervous and endocrine systems work by coordinating with one another and help maintain balance within the body. The central nervous system sends short and rapid signals to the body while the endocrine system sends messages via hormones, which travel through your circulatory system. The endocrine system works slower than your nervous system but travels greater distances. Your hormones are carried by blood into your cells where they are recognized by specific receptors. A well-trained and licensed reflexologist will customize each session to meet the needs of each individual client. The frequency and length of those sessions will vary depending on the client’s age and results from those sessions as well as the duration of those results. Some may feel the benefits from their session for a day or two and some for a week or longer. It is also not uncommon for symptoms to improve and last longer after each preceding session. If you or a family member is exhibiting symptoms of either ADD or ADHD, I encourage you to see your health-care provider for diagnosis and to develop a strategy for managing your ADD or ADHD.

Breastfeeding your baby after going back to work can be challenging but is totally doable. With these simple tips and some planning ahead, you can keep up the milk supply and continue to feed your baby breastmilk as long as you wish. 1. The breast pump - Invest in a high-quality electric breast pump to express milk and start pumping as soon as you are comfortable. Establishing a good milk supply after your baby is born and before you return to work will help maintain your supply when you are separated. Start practice feeding your baby a bottle a couple weeks before your return to work so that the baby can get used it. 2. Develop a routine - Try to pump the same times of day that your baby eats. That way you'll have a consistent supply for the baby when you aren't home. Work can get pretty demanding and distracting, so have specific breaks arranged for pumping sessions during the day. Nurse as soon as you get home and as much as you can when you are together to maintain that bond with your baby. 3. Know the guidelines for storing breast milk - Breast milk can be safely stored in glass or hard plastic bottles with tight-fitting lids or bags especially designed for storing breast milk. 4. Talk to your employer - Ask about a private space available for pumping. If your job does not allow that, get creative to accomplish privacy while pumping. Try talking to other breastfeeding moms you work with and get tips from them. 5. Plan ahead - Have your pumping parts clean and ready to go. The quick-clean microwavable bags are a good way to clean the pump parts during work.

6. Take care of yourself - Make sure that you're keeping yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eating healthy to keep the milk supply up. Your body needs about 500 extra calories per day to produce breast milk. Breastfeeding is a very rewarding short-term journey which provides long-term benefit. Breastfed babies have decreased risk of ear infections and get sick less often because mother passes protection onto her babies in the form of antibodies. Breastfed babies also have better development and have less trouble with gas, reflux and constipation. If you run into any bumps along the way, remember that this is not forever and you're not alone. Summer Slummin' Setting goals is the key to success BY JENNIFER WIGGLESWORTH when the sun is out and events are happening, but what happens when the cold sets back in? Finding yourself two steps backward, away from your goals, can be extremely defeating. When it’s all said and done, you’ll ask yourself, “Was it worth it?” Why not set oneself up for success now so that when the temperature turns, your body doesn’t have to? At least not as much. The first thing to do is set the goals. Summer is supposed to be fun, so set these with intention. Maybe summer goals are more about maintaining than losing weight or gaining strength. The second thing to get done is to make them achievable. When it comes to food, think fresh summer salads and grilled veggies. Where workouts are concerned, push hard three to four days a week and take the other days off. Many people get up earlier or workout after the sun sets to optimize the sunshine. If indoor barre or yoga workouts are your go-to, think about an activity that mirrors these exercises that can be done outside. Another option would be to alternate—one day inside and one day outside. This way, workouts get finished and summer rays can still be had. Whatever is done, sticking to the plan is the direct way to stick to your goals and still enjoy the summer sunshine. A favorite season of many is, hands-down, summer. So, enjoy it. Summer has a lot to offer. It’s a beautiful time of the year to enjoy grilling, boating, outdoor activities and maybe even just the sunshine itself. With all that said, enjoying summer with goals in mind can make it even that much greater. Set your goals and take summer slumming to summer achieving. s the sun shines its face through the clouds of what seemed to be an endless winter, it’s hard not to want to embrace every ounce of it while it’s still here. Sunshine tempts one with its warm rays and bright lights. Not only does it have an ambiance appeal, but it also has a physical, anatomical reaction within the body. raveling the world. It’s something many of us dream of doing but only few ever get the chance. And for one Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, mom and her four children, they have taken their world travels to a new level. Amy Hoffman Ford, a woman’s health nurse practitioner and single mom of four, has helped to open her children’s eyes to the world. Not through books, photographs or films, but by immersing them into the cultures themselves. Over the years, Amy traveled alone to Africa to underdeveloped and untouched areas all over the vast continent to serve women and children in need. These were the only times that she has been separated from her children. Her weeks abroad only added to her passion for the world and its people and helping others. “During the time spent away I started having visions of 'one day' bringing my children along so that they, too, could experience, live and love on others in need like I have. I have always told friends and family, ‘I can't wait until the day I bring the kids with me!’ Several trips later, it hit me hard and fast. Why on Earth do I need to wait until 'later’? The time is now.” Amy and her children, Emma, 15, Bennett, (now 14, having celebrated a birthday in Sri Lanka), Hudson, (now 12, having celebrated a birthday in Fiji and Bali) and Mara, 8, set out on this journey in late January on a one-way around-the-world humanitarian journey to volunteer and open their hearts to wherever there was a need. The preparations were endless, with months of planning to prepare for their journey across the world. With four children in three different schools within Kootenai County, the school district showed their support from day one for this “world schooling” adventure the children would soon embark on, all while helping those in need. Along their journey, which includes 96,269+ kilometers traveled, 28 planes rides and 51 accommodations, they’ve had a variety of handson learning experiences. These include: astrology (at an observatory in Australia where they had the opportunity to see stars millions of light years away), culinary (cooking classes and sampling), archeology (digging for fossils, in which Mara found some dated 550 million years old!), history (seeing knights’ armor from 1810 in person and sleeping

in a 16th Century Kasbah and getting lost in the twists and turns of the thick mud walls), zoology (rehabbing elephants in Thailand and Africa), herbology and farming (working on a tea plantation), aviation (getting to meet the pilot and sit in the cockpit of each of their flights, and Bennett helped land the plane on one of their international flights), maritime (learning how to read the wind, navigate the ocean and sail), geography, currency, politics and more. And there was, of course, PE daily. There’s nothing like hiking the Great Wall of China with your family to get your heart rate up. “When I stood by the elephant in the wild, I felt peaceful and graceful when I felt the elephant. I felt like an elephant, and they were big and I was small, and when I fed them bananas I felt happy and I had a lot of fun. Their names were Gentong, Boonront and Maydoom, Toomay,” says Mara. “One day we rode a bike to a bat cave in the forest and it reminded me of “The Goonies” adventure, just us and the forest, and when we walked into the cave there was 1,000 bats in the cave in every corner.” Bennett recalls his many experiences along the way, as well as his various encounters of the different foods, religions, cultures and people. “Some experiences go from helping spear fish in Fiji to eat and feed the locals to serving people at a traditional Thai wedding in Thailand. But one of my many favorites is when we went to Australia and got to see an observatory on what was probably the best nights to go and see it on! We learned

FEATURE STORY about the stars, how to use the big telescope, how massive the stars are and a whole bunch of really cool things that blew my mind away! If I had a chance to go back to Dubbo in Australia and do the same thing over again, I would definitely do it!” he says. During their five-month volunteering world journey, Amy has watched her children interact with all races, cultures and ages, only walking alongside them, not in front of them. “I have watched them hoist paraplegics into and out of sailboats to volunteer days afloat our earth’s ocean waters. I have watched them fill woven baskets full of tea leaves lending a hand on a plantation and living on a Buddhist monk monastery. I have watched them serve the needy at a program called REFOOD which upcycles unused or a surplus of grocery stores' rations. I have witnessed them having full on conversations with groups of locals and only smiles, gestures and drawing pictures were the mode of communication as stories unfold and are shared. I have witnessed my children walk with elephants, the gentle giants in the northern forests of Thailand, without any gates or chains to separate both species nor signing any waivers to do such. I have heard locals call these children ‘their children’ like their own.” Life’s simple luxuries were no more. They have slept on floors and taken cold bucket baths. They lived among those whom they served, and always did it with a smile, no matter how difficult it could be at times. “I have watched them serve hundreds at a wedding wearing peasant clothing and walk barefoot among the fancy dressed guests. I have yearned for these teaching moments for so long,” says Amy. “One of the children even celebrated a birthday with the indigenous

Yes, the infamous Tom Hanks island.” Hudson adds: “To compare a country to another, you have to experience each one. Like Sri Lanka and Dubai are two very different countries. In one flight everything changes. It goes from poor to rich in five hours; people living in shacks and fishing on wooden poles to hot tubs and Lamborghinis, six-foot tin houses to the tallest building in the world. In one day I experienced so much. We need to be grateful for what we have because some people live in half cargo containers and steal electricity to survive. No need to ask for more than what we have.”
Amy reflects back on taking the children to Bumi Sehat; a world-famous birthing clinic and meeting the founder, an American. “Anyone who knows me knows this is my second passion, besides raising my children, is helping women and children,” she says. “My children asked the founder such brilliant and thoughtprovoking questions, and they also knew deep down how important this one day along the journey was for me. It brought tears to my eyes when Hudson got to hold a newborn baby, born just the evening before, both of them sharing the same birthday.” Along this journey, the definition of “home” changed for this family. Some may say home is where the Wi-Fi is or where you hang your hat, but not for Amy and her children. Throughout this journey, they have discovered that home is

where your heart is at; home is made up of the people who give you life and make you smile, where welcoming hearts and love live. “I will always be home when I am with them,” she says. “When we were in Cape Town, South Africa, my mom took us to one of the many common townships which she has frequently volunteered at delivering babies in her past journeys,” says Emma. “A township is where the poorest of the poor people live together in a community made up of tin, cardboard and stolen electricity. In the streets, trash is thrown everywhere, kids run around barefoot, even with the hundreds of broken glass bottles on the ground, yet, they were still smiling and happy. This made me think, why, with the way they live, the things they don’t have, how do they still smile and love on one another like they won’t see tomorrow?

This is why I am so thankful my mother has taken us around the world, to show us what Coeur d’ Alene couldn't and what school textbooks can’t define.” Amy says that observing her children discover their world and watching these discoveries through their eyes and seeing them trust in themselves was her greatest souvenir. “When you want so desperately for your children to understand the ways of the world, appreciate what they have, be grateful, be kind, be patient, be loving, have moments with their creator, and you try to teach them these things and show them the ways, and then the lightbulb goes off in your soul; they are finding
these things within themselves—all on their own.”

During the closure of the last weeks, as Amy and her children gathered around their nightly family meal, and while tears were shed, not one of them wanted to return. Now, as their journey has come to a close, Amy says this: “I can say that putting myself through graduate school for a double masters, raising four kids on my own since the youngest was in diapers and everything in between … We rocked this! This came from the strength within. I can finally say something positive about myself, which is reflected from the souls of my children’s hearts; I successfully got my children one full rotation around our Earth. We did it!” If asked if she would do it all over again, the answer is an overwhelming “Yes!” As Amy smiles, “Our five happy hearts are now quilted around the world together, and we can’t wait to blanket our woven love all over Mother Earth again!”

Distillery options continue to expand BY colin anderson
The craft beer explosion over the last 15 to 20 years has ushered in a new era of consumer, one who enjoys many styles and variations and is often seeking new and exciting beverages. It has also helped bring in a new generation of distillers, each fighting for their piece of the multibillion dollar industry. The West is now home to hundreds of craft distillers with award-winning gins, whiskeys and vodkas, and the industry shows no sign of slowing down.
How it’s made Like brewing beer or winemaking, distilling alcohol is a relatively simple process with a few basic ingredients and steps. Depending on the type of spirit, grains like wheat, malted barley, rye or corn are added to a cooker to turn starches into sugar in what’s called the mash. Next the mash is pushed to a stainless steel fermenter where yeast is added. Yeast eats the sugars and creates alcohol. The liquid is then sent to a still where the alcohol is turned into steam, separated and sent down through a condenser to return to a liquid state. This process is often repeated several times before it finally makes its way to the retention take where the high strength alcohol is mellowed. The alcohol is then placed in barrels where it will age before making its way into bottles and eventually your highball glass or cocktail.

Events
There are now well over 100 craft distilleries in the state of Washington, more than 50 in Oregon and roughly a dozen in both Montana and Idaho. Each state has created a guild to bring these craft distillers together to promote the craft spirit industry as a whole. The Oregon Distillery Trail (OregonDistilleryTrail.com) lists out locations and hours for distillers across the state. The Washington Guild (WashingtonDistillersGuild.org) has a map of its own you can link up with your smartphone. Laws on tasting rooms and serving on premise vary from state to state, but you can typically consume roughly 2 ounces on premise per day. By banding together, the industry is not only able to encourage individual consumers to choose their products in stores but also has influence over bars and restaurants, encouraging them to support local business when mixing cocktails.
Though not to the level of craft beer festivals, distillers across the West host their own celebrations and annual tasting events and competitions. Proof is held each July in Seattle and showcases Washington distillers and food pairings. In Montana, The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce puts on an annual spirit event and another recent distillers festival helped raise more than $10,000 for the Missoula Food Bank. Toast is typically held in spring in Portland and brings distillers primarily from the Northwest but also the nation and the world. This year’s event featured 120 different spirits paired with sample bites from a few of Portland’s top chefs. At other regional food festivals you are also more than likely to find a craft distillery or two shaking up unique cocktails that can pair with gourmet food just as well as wine or beer.

The spirit of the West includes adventure and finding new experiences, something that is captured in its liquors as well. While distillers are continuing traditional unflavored bourbons, gins and vodkas, many are experimenting with all kinds of different ingredients and fermentables. 44 Degrees North utilizes mountain-grown huckleberries in its immensely popular vodka, and you’ll find ginger-infused rum at all three Bardenay locations in Idaho. Rogue is most likely known for its craft beers but has also been distilling since 2003. Here you will find Dead Guy Whiskey, which is distilled from the same malts as its award-winning beer with the same name. Alongside common spirits, these entrepreneurs are bringing lesser-known varieties like Aquavit, Absinthe and fruit liquors to the uninitiated. Many partner with local brewers on collaborations like whiskey barrel-aged sours or stouts, providing a whole new appreciation for both industries.
Located in Spokane, Washington, Dry Fly was one of the very first to open up once distilling laws loosened in the state. With its location just a few miles from the rolling hills and farmland of the Palouse, Dry Fly is able to provide a true farm-to-table spirit utilizing only local grains. This is unique as there are ways for producers to shorten or ‘cheat’ the process resulting in a less superior beverage. The tasting room allows you to have three ½-ounce samples of any of their numerous spirits or two single spirit house-made cocktails. Each is made with one Dry Fly liquor and other nonalcoholic ingredients, allowing the spirit to remain the showcase. You’ll find vodka, gin, bourbon and several whiskies including a frequently awarded port barrelaged whiskey.
Found in Gig Harbor, Washington, this small-town distiller is growing by leaps and bounds, as evidenced by its partnership with the Seattle Mariners. The growth is not surprising considering Heritage has been the most awarded distillery in the nation by the American Distilling Institute for five consecutive years. The options available here are almost too numerous to mention with flavor-infused vodkas like ghost pepper, strawberry, lavender and coffee to rye, bourbon and the everpopular Brown Sugar Bourbon. Heritage recently partnered with rockers Pearl Jam and the Vitalogy Foundation on a special release bottle. A percentage of sales will go toward fighting homelessness in King County. Frequent visitors can also join the Cask Club, in which you receive your own 10-litre barrel filled with your choice of spirit. You can come in and taste how the spirit is aging and you decide when to bottle the product.

Havasupai Falls

S
itting in a crowded pizza restaurant on a Thursday evening in Spokane, Washington, a tradition we had going for about six months, we decided a camping and hiking trip sounded fun. Brian, my husband, and our friend Pat Cornwall put our collective minds together and came up with the idea of going to Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
We quickly realized that this trip was not guaranteed as they have a competitive permit system to go, but we were prepared to try. On February 1, 2018, at 7am, the day the permit lines open, the three of us, in our respective locales, began trying the phones and the website hoping to get our permits. Suddenly, Brian texted that he had succeeded; we were going to the Falls. My initial thrill soon turned to panic. We had just signed up for a 10-mile hiking trip into the Grand Canyon, which in turn means a 10-mile hiking trip out of the Grand Canyon! It was time to prepare. We quickly began finding blogs and a Facebook group filled with people from all over the world who have gone or are preparing to go on this amazing trip (Facebook.com/groups/Havasupai/about). This group proved invaluable for me, as there were lists upon lists of what to pack and several stories of just how incredible the Havasupai Falls are. I was beginning to get more and more excited with each Facebook post.

AFTER A FREEZING NIGHT, WE AWOKE THE MORNING OF THE 28TH READY TO MAKE THE HOUR TRIP TO THE TRAILHEAD TO BEGIN OUR DESCENT INTO THE GRAND CANYON. WE PARKED AT THE TRAILHEAD, PUT ON OUR BACKPACKS AND SET OUR TREKKING POLES TO THE CORRECT HEIGHTS AND BEGAN OUR HIKE.
Caverns, which unexpectedly, turned out to be a great part of the trip. The Caverns are located 200 to 300 feet below ground, and once you take the elevator the 21 floors down, you are met with amazing geological formations and a fantastic history. The Caverns were used by the U.S. Government as a fallout shelter during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, holding supplies for 2,000 people, which still remain today.
As we ventured further into the Canyon we stopped and took photos, had snacks and took our time. The colors within the Canyon are indescribable; the blue of the sky is only something you see on the clearest summer day, and once you put the green trees and the red of the canyon walls against such a perfect backdrop, you get something only an artist could dream up.
After a freezing night, we awoke the morning of the 28th ready to make the hour trip to the trailhead to begin our descent into the Grand Canyon. We parked at the trailhead, put on our backpacks and set our trekking poles to the correct heights and began our hike. As someone who has generally been active, competitive and loves a good challenge, I was a bit nervous, but there was no turning back now! We made it to the trailhead after about 10 minutes of walking down a road. The view of the Grand Canyon from the trailhead was incredible. It’s hard to imagine just how massive the Canyon really is. We began heading into the Canyon passing a few people along the way and several horses. There is an option to have a horse pack your belongings in, which seemed like a popular choice for many. You learned quickly to get off the trail in a hurry if you saw the horses—they were on a mission, to say the least.
We saw various trees, vegetation and amazing rock formations along the way, but other than the horses and a few birds, there weren’t any animals seen.

After a fairly uneventful 10-mile hike in, we made it to the Havasupai Indian Reservation, home of the Supai people. We were not sure what to expect at the Reservation, but I think I can say that we were all a little caught off guard. Imagine living in the middle of the Grand Canyon, with a small school, a store that sold few items, a post office (the last “mule mail” in the country, I recommend sending yourself a postcard), and a restaurant, if you can really call it that. It had some great Indian fry bread, hamburgers, hotdogs and a few other items like what you might find in a large convenience store. The people don’t have much and, frankly, it was a bit depressing. We all ate our respective lunches

We want to take a swim! and then realized we had 2 more miles to go to reach the campground. Our legs, at least mine, were feeling the hike by this point and I hoped these 2 miles would go by quickly; however, as it turns out, the last 2 miles are some of the best. We came across several pools of water that were turquoise in color and absolutely breathtaking.
The next morning we were up bright and early to continue on with our exploration, as there are several other falls to see in the nearby area all as beautiful as the last. Walking around the camp and seeing the water was a gorgeous and relaxing way to spend our day before the final day and the hike back out the Canyon.
We continued our trek past the pools of water and finally came across the Havasupai Falls themselves! They were enormous and, due to the amount of limestone in the walls of the Canyon, were a bright greenish color. We then continued on for about a 1/2 mile and found our camp spot. We set up our tents and ate some of the dehydrated food we had brought. We then set out to explore.
After an amazing trip we were ready to head out of the Canyon. The hike out was by far the most strenuous portion. There is 2,800 feet of elevation over 12 miles with the last mile and half being 1,000 feet of elevation—it sounded nearly impossible. We packed up camp, with our packs being slightly lighter than on the way in since we had eaten most of the food, and began the long hike out of the Canyon. Luckily for us the weather stayed in the mid-70s during the hike (it tends to get much hotter in the summer months, so plan accordingly).
There was a natural spring not too far from our campsite where we could refill water bottles, and then we went back to the Havasupai Falls to watch people swim and dip our feet in the water ourselves. It is said to be about 70 degrees year round, but it felt chillier than that to me! That night we slept in our tents hearing only the noise from the nearby creek, the most quiet and peaceful sleeping conditions I have experienced.

Once we made it back out of the Canyon, with a feeling of accomplishment, we headed to the car and to find some non-dehydrated food. This was a trip that I will not forget and one that I would recommend to all who can do it. The Canyon is a beautiful place!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 1/8 cup truffle oil 1/8 cup extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 1/8 cup white balsamic vinegar 1 small shallot minced 1 side of salmon (about 2 to 3 lbs. (4 to 6 portions). They will cut it for you if it is larger than this. Or save and freeze what you don’t use for later use). Cut widthwise into 7-oz. portions. 1 lb. of your favorite lettuce blend 1 half red onion small dice A handful of freshly picked herbs (I like fennel fronds, basil, chervil, lovage, chives, in any combination) 1/2 pint raspberries 1/2 pint blackberries 1/2 pint blueberries
METHOD For the Salad Dressing: • In a mixing bowl, add shallots and Dijon mustard. (Troy’s Tip: Place a damp towel under the bowl to stop any spastic bowl wandering and splashing.) • Whisk in white balsamic vinegar. • Whisk and drizzle in truffle oil. • Whisk and drizzle in olive oil. • Salt and pepper to taste. • Chill.
For the Salmon • Spray the salmon filets with a non-stick pan spray (I rub them with bacon fat). • On a medium-high grill or cast-iron pan, cook salmon until you have brown grill marks or a nice brown cast-iron crust (about 4 minutes). • Unlike steak, black marks on fish does not taste good. Flip over and let cook about another 3 minutes. You want to end up with a center that has a slightly medium-rare look (it will have a little more carry-over heat to finish it off. Trust me. This will make your fish the best in the neighborhood). • Remove salmon from the heat and set aside. • To Serve: On your plates, place your salad mix. • Top with salmon. • Sprinkle berries around. • Re-whisk then drizzle your dressing back and forth in a tight zig-zag pattern. • Garnish with the red onions and herbs.

A Day of Fitness and Fun for a Great Cause IT’S TIME FOR THE NINTH ANNUAL GALLOPING GERTIE BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

oin the Gig Harbor Rotary North at Tacoma Narrow Airport on Saturday, August 11, for the Ninth Annual Galloping Gertie Half Marathon, 10k and 5k run. The event, which supports an important cause—children in need—is one you won’t want to miss. The Galloping Gertie is a day of fitness and fun for both running enthusiasts and the entire family. The half marathon offers spectacular views across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and back and is chipped timed, and recognition will be given to the top finishers. For those interested in shorter distances, you can also register for the 10k run or 5k run/walk. The half marathon kicks off at 8am, followed by the 10k and 5k at 8:15am. Registration is $80 for the half marathon, $65 for the 10k and $50 for the 5k. Prices increase on site on race day to $90, $75 and $55 respectively. In addition to the race, The Hub is offering a delicious breakfast that morning and a beer garden after the race to be enjoyed by participants and spectators. There will also be several booths at the finish line providing more information about Galloping Gertie’s charities and sponsors.
