Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank

ince 1976, Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank & Community Services has provided steady, practical support to neighbors across Gig Harbor, Fox Island, and the Key Peninsula. What began as a single phone line connecting volunteers to families in need has grown into a comprehensive, volunteer-led organization serving hundreds of households each month. In fiscal year 2025 alone, more than 618,000 meals were distributed, along with $332,000 in emergency financial assistance to help families remain housed and employed. In 2022, FISH opened its 10,600-square-foot facility on Burnham Drive, allowing clients to self-shop for groceries, clothing, hygiene items, and household essentials in a dignified setting. Nearly 350 volunteers, including local high school students, keep operations running while 96 percent of the budget goes directly back into the community. As the organization approaches its 50th anniversary, the mission remains clear: meet rising needs with compassion, efficiency, and neighbor-to-neighbor care.

ounded in 1976, Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank & Community Services (GHP FISH) began with a simple idea: neighbors showing up for neighbors. Nearly five decades later, that principle continues to guide the organization as it responds to growing and often hidden needs across greater Gig Harbor, Fox Island, the Key Peninsula, and nearby communities.

The organization began with founder Jan Coen and her husband, Ron. While stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Navy, Jan volunteered with a church-led social services network. When the couple returned to Gig Harbor in 1975, she looked for a similar resource and found none. What she did find were families quietly struggling. With support from local churches, firefighters, and police officers, Jan helped form a locally driven volunteer network built on compassion and responsibility.

Food insecurity in Gig Harbor is real and often hidden. Many clients are working households, retirees, or individuals facing sudden setbacks. As one former client wrote after finding stability again, “You met us with warmth, respect, and kindness when we felt our most broken.”

GHP FISH officially began service on June 15, 1976, operating through a single phone line routed to volunteers’ homes. Early assistance ranged from childcare and meals to transportation and emotional support. Those personal, neighbor-to-neighbor moments set the tone for what the organization would become. In the early 1980s, when a county-supported food bank closed, GHP FISH volunteers stepped in to ensure the community didn’t lose access to emergency food. Over time, services expanded to include groceries, financial assistance, gently used clothing, educational aid, and holiday support. Temporary spaces gave way to rented facilities, each one quickly outgrown. That growth culminated in July 2022 with the opening of GHP FISH’s purpose-built facility on Burnham Drive. The 10,600-square-foot building allows clients to self-shop for food, household items, clothing, and hygiene products in a setting designed to preserve dignity. It also supports expanded volunteer operations, food storage, and administrative coordination. Since moving in, client visits and volunteer participation have increased significantly. In fiscal year 2025, GHP FISH averaged more than 900 food bank visits per month, distributing the equivalent of over 618,000 meals valued at more than $1.6 million. The organization also provided $332,000 in emergency financial aid to help households remain housed, maintain utilities, and stay employed. “We also want people to know there has been a steady increase in need, with family visits doubling over the past three years,” says board president Ron Coen. “At the same time, inflation has increased our expenses for food and facility operations.” GHP FISH remains volunteer-led, with nearly 350 volunteers, and is governed by a working board. That group includes 30–40 high school volunteers who play a meaningful role in daily operations and help extend food bank hours into the early evening two days a week. A small paid staff provides continuity, while administrative costs remain minimal, with 96 percent of the budget directed back into the community. “It is a privilege working alongside these dedicated volunteers,” Jan Coen says. “We love working together to provide tangible help and encouragement to people who are facing tough times.” As GHP FISH approaches its 50th anniversary, the focus remains on meeting rising needs, managing higher costs, and continuing the work the community depends on. A small circle of Jewish followers gathered for Passover, the ancient remembrance of liberation from Egypt. The lamb was prepared. The bread was unleavened. Bitter herbs were placed on the table. Tradition was intact.

Then came the moment no one expected. Their teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, reframed the meal. What once looked backward suddenly pointed forward. Memory became promise. A private evening shifted public history, and the echo of that shift still carries across centuries. The earliest followers of Jesus did not abandon their Jewish roots. They kept the feasts. They kept the rhythms. What changed was the meaning beneath them. The lamb gained a face. The bread spoke of life. The blood once brushed on doorposts found its reflection in human hearts. Each week, they gathered on the first day, the day they believed the tomb was empty. Once each year, during Passover, they slowed to retrace the full story: suffering, silence, and sunrise. A SINGLE FLAME

WAS STRUCK a practical matter: establishing a shared date for Easter. The decision was clear. Easter would fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. The formula brought clarity and consistency across regions that spanned languages, cultures, and empires. The order arrived, though history would later introduce new complications. Centuries later, the adoption of the Gregorian calendar widened the gap between Western and Eastern churches. Western communities embraced the new system. Eastern Orthodox churches retained the older Julian calendar. The result remains visible today. Some years feature two Easter Sundays. The calculations differ. The proclamation does not. By the fourth and fifth centuries, Easter had reshaped the Christian calendar itself. Preparation expanded into forty days of Lent, a season of reflection and restraint. Holy Week carried believers through celebration, betrayal, suffering, and stillness. The story was not rushed. It was walked slowly. Then came the Vigil. In darkened sanctuaries, a single flame was struck. One candle lit another until the room glowed with quiet radiance. Ancient stories were spoken aloud: Creation, Covenant, Exodus, and Redemption. The narrative stretched from Genesis to the Gospels, reminding listeners that Easter did not stand alone but rested within a larger story of rescue and restoration. As morning approached, new believers stepped into the water and rose again, white garments draped over their shoulders. A declaration filled the air, echoing through stone walls and open fields alike: Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Language itself reflects Easter’s deep roots. In most of the world, the word remains closely tied to Passover—Pascha, Pascua, Pâques. atie Dutton, RN, is no stranger to MultiCare’s South Sound hospitals. In 2022, she joined the health system as a float nurse, starting each shift in a different inpatient unit. Over the course of a year, Katie worked in over 20 units across five hospitals. Her familiarity with MultiCare Cancer Institute, however, didn’t begin until she became a patient herself. That experience would later show her how donor-supported care plays a direct role in access, innovation, and outcomes for patients across the South Sound. Searching for answers Katie first noticed blood in her stool while she was a travel nurse. Doctors thought it was hemorrhoids and recommended more fiber, which didn’t resolve her symptoms. In 2023, Katie established primary care at MultiCare Family Medicine Center with Marissa Robinson, MD, who promptly ordered a colonoscopy. A scope revealed a polyp too large to remove during the procedure, but a biopsy came back negative for cancer. That’s when she was referred to colorectal surgeon Laila Rashidi, MD, and medical oncologist Jennifer Slim, DO, at donor-supported MultiCare Cancer Institute. While cancer was suspected, multiple scans and tests were inconclusive. But Katie’s team kept digging. A fourth biopsy of the polyp finally confirmed their suspicions.

“I’m very, very lucky MultiCare has one of these systems,” she says. “Today, there’s no evidence of disease in my body, and I’m feeling healthy and strong, which I’m grateful for.” Experience inspires action After her diagnosis, Katie knew she needed a role that could accommodate her treatment schedule. An open position at the MultiCare Cancer Institute – Gig Harbor clinic seemed meant to be. “I realized I needed people who knew me and understood what I was going through,” she explains. “I also loved the idea of working in oncology because I felt like I could make my experience mean something, and I could turn this seemingly horrible thing into helping others.” A future shaped by generosity

“I’ll never forget — it was Black Friday when Dr. Rashidi called me to tell me the results,” Katie recalls. “Cancer in the mass was finally found. I started chemo within a week.”

Backed by generous community support, MultiCare Cancer Institute is building a robust, statewide network to provide exceptional cancer care while minimizing the need to travel. In Gig Harbor, donors are helping expand treatment spaces, fund state-of-the-art robotics, and ensure personalized navigation throughout a patient’s journey.

A quick response

As both a nurse and former patient, Katie is excited for what’s ahead.

Katie initially went through eight rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to resect the tumor, and two additional months of chemo. Her partner, Drew, was by her side at every appointment.

“I’m looking forward to patients continuing to have access to the most modern treatments and the best care teams,” she explains. “Advancements happen fast. Ten years ago, my diagnosis would have meant lifelong, palliative chemo. Investing in growth and development really does save lives. I believe it saved mine.”

In May 2025, a follow-up scan showed a tiny nodule on Katie’s lung, which pathology verified was metastasis from her now stage 60

4 colorectal cancer. Two months later, she underwent minimally invasive surgery using the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system. One of only three systems in Washington state, it allowed Katie’s surgeons to safely identify and remove the nodule rather than wait for the cancer to grow big enough to cut out, risking further spread.

2 cups cooked jasmine rice 1½ cups frozen shelled edamame, steamed

METHOD PREPARE THE SALMON GLAZE

• In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and grated garlic. • Set aside.

COOK THE SALMON

• Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. • Add the salmon cubes in a single layer and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden and just cooked through. • During the last minute of cooking, brush the salmon with the glaze and allow it to caramelize slightly. • Cook until the salmon reaches 125 to 130°F for medium.

efore the parade, before the car show, before the booths and music, there was the fleet. The Maritime Gig Festival exists because Gig Harbor has always been a working fishing town.

Long before the Harbor became a destination, it was a livelihood. Croatian and Scandinavian fishermen built homes along these shores in the late 1800s, launching wooden boats from the same waterfront we gather on each summer. Families rose before dawn, mended nets by hand, and followed the tides and seasons. An industry and a community took shape. At the center of the weekend is the Blessing of the Fleet, woven into the festival for nearly six decades and still deeply meaningful to local fishing families. During the procession, vessels and crews are honored. Prayers are offered for safety in the season ahead, and names of those lost at sea are remembered.

Gig Harbor remains a working waterfront. Fishermen head out before most of us wake. You can hear their horns as they pass the lighthouse and see families waving goodbye from shore. They supply seafood across the region and around the world. Local crab and salmon travel far beyond our harbor, connecting this town to global markets. Families gather along the docks for the Blessing because it matters. That history anchors the weekend. There will be the Grande Parade, waterfront vendors, live music, and Sunday’s Wheels on the Water Car Show. The foundation remains, honoring the men and women whose lives are tied to the water.
