Revitalize Your Kitchen

Give your kitchen a fresh look and feel by embarking on a fall-inspired kitchen makeover. Start by updating the cabinets with a new coat of paint or staining them in rich, warm hues. Consider replacing outdated hardware with modern fixtures to add a touch of elegance. Upgrade your countertops with durable and stylish materials like granite or quartz, giving your kitchen a luxurious and functional makeover. Enhance the lighting by installing new fixtures or adding under-cabinet lighting for improved visibility and ambiance. Don’t forget about the backsplash—choose tiles in autumnal colors or opt for a nature-inspired pattern. Finally, add decorative touches like seasonal centerpieces or a cozy breakfast nook, complete with comfortable seating and warm lighting. With a kitchen makeover, you’ll create a space that is not only visually appealing but also conducive to preparing delicious meals and gathering with loved ones during the autumn season.

Create a Cozy Fireplace Area

As the temperature drops, creating a cozy fireplace area becomes a top priority. Consider updating your fireplace with a fresh coat of paint, choosing warm, earthy tones that evoke the essence of autumn. Enhance the visual appeal by installing new tiles or a stone surround that complements the color scheme. If you don’t have a fireplace, explore options for a gas or electric insert that provides both warmth and a charming focal point. Arrange cozy seating nearby, complete with soft throws and plush pillows, to create a comfortable nook where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quality time with loved ones. A revamped fireplace area will become the heart of your home during the autumn months, radiating warmth and coziness.

Boost Energy

Efficiency and Maintain Exterior

Prepare your home for the changing seasons by focusing on energy efficiency and exterior maintenance. Inspect windows and doors for any drafts and seal them to prevent heat loss. Upgrade insulation in your attic and walls to ensure your home remains comfortable throughout autumn. Install weather stripping around doors and windows, and consider replacing outdated thermostats with programmable or smart thermostats to optimize energy usage. On the exterior, inspect the roof for damaged shingles, clean out gutters, and trim tree branches that could potentially cause damage during storms. Give your home a fresh coat of paint or stain to protect it from the elements and enhance its curb appeal. Don’t forget to aerate the lawn, apply fall fertilizer, and plant autumn flowers for a vibrant and inviting exterior. By addressing energy efficiency and exterior maintenance, you’ll ensure your home is ready for the autumn season.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Retreat

Maximize your enjoyment of the beautiful autumn weather by transforming your outdoor space into an inviting retreat. Install a fire pit or patio heater to extend outdoor usability into the cooler evenings. Create comfortable seating areas with cozy outdoor furniture, adorned with warm-hued cushions and blankets. Consider adding string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Enhance the cozy atmosphere with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins, gourds and autumn wreaths. If you have a garden, plant late-blooming flowers or add autumnal plants to create a vibrant display of colors. An outdoor retreat will allow you to savor the beauty of the season, host gatherings with friends and family, or simply relax in nature’s embrace.

PLANT LATE-BLOOMING FLOWERS OR ADD AUTUMNAL PLANTS TO CREATE A VIBRANT DISPLAY OF COLORS.

DIY fall décor ideas using indoor and outdoor elements

Nature’s Harvest in Your Home

28

Fall is a time of bountiful harvest, colorful leaves, and the unmistakable aroma of nature preparing for winter. The beauty of the season naturally lends itself to inspiring and resourceful home decorations. Utilizing objects both from inside and outside your home, you can create heartwarming accents and centerpieces that truly capture the spirit of autumn. So, let’s dive into six simple yet stunning ways to decorate your home with the season’s signature warmth and vibrancy.

29 september/october 2023 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

Natural Leaf Garlands

Celebrate autumn’s colors by crafting garlands from fallen leaves. Each leaf, unique in its shape, hue and size, contributes to creating a vibrant garland that encapsulates fall’s beauty. Explore your creativity by arranging them in a gradient or random pattern. This handmade work of art, draped over a fireplace, along windows, above doorways or on a staircase, breathes life into your spaces. It’s not just a simple, costeffective decoration, but a fun and engaging activity that can involve family or friends, instilling a sense of seasonal spirit and camaraderie. Don’t forget to preserve the leaves first by ironing them between sheets of wax paper; this ensures your garland retains its brilliant colors longer, extending your enjoyment of this stunning piece of autumn artistry.

01 02

Twinkling Autumn Lights

As daylight fades earlier in the autumn months, add a warm glow to your décor with twinkling string lights. Encase these tiny shimmering bulbs in mason jars interspersed with colorful fall leaves or wrapped around gourds and pumpkins for a captivating evening spectacle. Highlight a bookshelf adorned with your favorite autumnal keepsakes or interlace them within your natural leaf garlands to add a bit of sparkle to the night. Opt for string lights in warm shades of orange, red or gold for an extra touch of fall festivity. They offer an enchanting way to maintain a cozy radiance in your home, illuminating the magical side of autumn.

Pinecone Décor 03

Transform the humble pinecone into versatile décor pieces. Larger pinecones make natural candle holders that bring a rustic charm to your spaces, while smaller ones, adorned with a bit of glitter or paint, are perfect for hanging ornaments, adding a festive touch to your home. Consider baking them to bring out their natural aroma. Once they’re cool, sprinkle them with a few drops of your favorite essential oils like cinnamon or clove. Now they double as a natural air freshener, infusing your home with a rich, seasonal scent. The result? A multi-sensory experience that elevates your autumn-inspired home and amplifies its coziness.

04

Seasonal Centerpieces

Create a striking centerpiece using a combination of indoor and outdoor items. Fill a rustic tray or cornucopia with mini pumpkins, dried corn and colorful leaves. Complement this rustic tableau with treasures from inside your home such as vintage books, antique bottles or candle holders. Add a touch of whimsy with fairy lights or glass beads. You could even incorporate family heirlooms or photos to bring a touch of sentimentality to the display. Mixing elements in this way adds a fascinating dynamic to the centerpiece, making it more than just an aesthetic focal point—it becomes a captivating narrative of your home and the autumn season.

Harvest Mantel Display

Turn your mantel into a celebration of harvest. Combine indoor items like small gourds, candlesticks or framed fall-themed art with outdoor elements like branches, fall leaves or dried berries. Add a few antiqued lanterns or a cozy knit throw to lend warmth and character. Perhaps a treasured family photo in a wooden frame could add a nostalgic touch.

By fusing the indoors with the outdoors, you’ll create a charming display that reflects autumn’s vibrant palette and harvest bounty. It’s not just about decorating; it’s about creating a space that reflects the season’s comforting transition, inviting everyone to bask in its homely appeal.

05

DIY Autumn Wreaths

A homemade wreath is a perfect way to welcome fall. Use materials such as twigs, dried flowers and leaves from your backyard. For an extra personal touch, integrate indoor items like ribbons or heirloom brooches. Consider using fabric scraps or old clothing to make bows or other embellishments. This not only lends the wreath a unique flair but also imbues it with fond memories. A DIY wreath doesn’t just reflect your style, it tells your story. It’s more than just a delightful crafting project; it’s a meaningful and creative expression that brings the essence of fall right to your door, welcoming the season with open arms.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR TREES WITH SKILL AND CRAFT

Craft Tree Care is your local and trusted tree expert

Since establishing Craft Tree Service in June of 2020, Nicholas and Nici Craft have been providing the communities of North Idaho with exceptional services through their namesake tree service business. “Nick loved running a platoon as a sergeant of Marines and wanted to run a tree care company with the same leadership and passion,” his wife, Nici, shares.

Nicholas served in the US Marine Corps for eight years, during which time he did two tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. After leaving the Marines in 2017, he and Nici moved to Auburn, California. Nicholas worked doing tree service for a local landscaping company and worked for a general contractor full-time while simultaneously enrolled in school to get a business degree. Nici had already graduated with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management, as well as earning her associate degree in general business and merchandise product development, and was pursuing a career in meeting planning for various associations.

The couple soon realized that California was not the place they wanted to raise their future family, and in January of 2020

(right before the pandemic hit and everyone began flocking to North Idaho), they made the move to Coeur d’Alene. Shortly after buying their first home, Nicholas and Nici decided to start Craft Tree Care.

Since before she was born, Nici’s father was a tree climber, and during her childhood, he started his own tree service business. As Nici got older, she would assist with the administrative side of the business until he sold his company and retired. Nicholas worked for the company as well and discovered his interest, and passion, in tree climbing. Founding Craft Tree Care was the natural next step for the couple. And the rest is history.

Serving Idaho’s five northern counties (Kootenai, Shoshone, Bonner, Boundary and Benewah), Nicholas, Nici and their Craft Tree Care team specialize in tree maintenance, tree removal (still standing or fallen), as well as tree trimming (including pruning and trimming of dead branches) and stump grinding. They also are quick to respond to emergency and storm calls and take care of hazardous trees.

“We are proud to be a small business that gives our customers the best value for the high-quality tree work they deserve,” Nicholas shares. Nici adds, “Nick is on almost every single jobsite to ensure customer satisfaction.”

When it comes to what the Crafts find most rewarding in the work they

do, they agree that it is having the privilege to watch their employees grow on both a personal and professional level every year. “We would not be where we are without their hard work, skill and loyalty,” Nicholas affirms. “We love how impressed our customers are with our employees’ skill, positive attitudes and professionalism—every single day.”

The Crafts feel truly blessed to have made the move to Coeur d’Alene and start their own business here in North Idaho. “The freedom, respect for your community members, safety and beauty attracted us to the area, and we are proud to call this community home and try to be involved in our community as much as possible,” says Nici. “Almost every one of our customers is a freedom-minded, family oriented person who we are so glad to get to know every day and provide them with our services.”

In their free time, the couple, along with their two young daughters, enjoys everything North Idaho has to offer, such as hiking, foraging for huckleberries, barbecuing with friends and family, and just enjoying the beauty of the outdoors (water fun in the summer and snow sports in the winter). “Hunting is our biggest passion,” notes Nicholas. “We hunt all over Idaho and Montana as much as possible.”

Whether it’s tree removal, trimming or maintenance, stump grinding or storm cleanup, Craft Tree Care is your local and trusted tree expert. Give them a call today to have peace of mind when it comes to the health of your trees and property.

Teacher in the Spotlight

“My favorite professor in college started his classes asking us every day what the most important thing about teaching is. The answer? People,” says Rita Roth, fourth- and fifth-grade looping teacher at Borah Elementary. “It has been my honor to work with the most incredible students. Not a day passes that I don’t laugh with them, learn from them, watch them achieve goals and overcome challenges.”

Rita was named Coeur d’Alene Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2022-2023. She has been teaching for 14 years and says her favorite experiences have been the “millions of small moments” she cherishes.

“It is one student sharing his dyslexia story with confidence and courage as he explained that dyslexia has been both a struggle and a gift, and another student thanking [him] for the inspiration she found in his story,” Rita says. “For one student, it was finding her voice and asking for help when she was struggling with an academic concept. For another it was working tirelessly on a speech to get into Student Council and then being elected by his peers. For another student, it was finding his love for chess during Chess Club and going from not placing last year to getting first place this year.”

She says the small moments include the student who, at the beginning of the year, was embarrassed when he got an answer wrong and yelled in frustration but now reminds his peers that we learn more from our mistakes than we do from when we get the answer right the first time.

“It is the student who as a second-grader would hide in lockers and now as a fifth-grader stops when she sees second-graders hiding in lockers and calmly says, ‘I get it. I used to hide in lockers too, but I learned some better strategies. Can I walk you back to your class and help you learn them too?’” Rita says. “And they go with her, almost every time.”

In addition to moments cherished with her students, Rita takes pride in her team. “I get to work with the most incredible team at Borah who encourage, challenge and inspire me every day. The people are the best thing about teaching.”

Above all, Rita hopes her students know the impact they can make in life. “I hope my students learn that what we do and say matters, and that small acts of kindness make a huge difference in the world.”

At 17 years old, Nolan Christ enters his senior year at Coeur d’Alene High School (CHS) this fall.

Since his sophomore year, Nolan has played on the varsity football and baseball teams while maintaining a 3.5 GPA while taking Honors classes. “I have also enjoyed being involved in DECA, volunteering in the store, and competing around the state,” Nolan says. “In the summer, I have a great time playing on my travel baseball team, the CDA Lumbermen.”

Nolan plans to continue playing baseball into his senior year and beyond. “I plan on playing baseball in college, and studying business,” he says. “My career interests include going into business, with a focus on entrepreneurship or marketing.”

Nolan says he is intrigued by presenting and creating innovative products. In his junior year, he created his own brand and designed hats to sell. “I would also like to be involved with coaching, as a positive way to stay involved with the sports I love,” he says.

With widespread talent and a strong spirit, Nolan is set up for success as a senior—both off and on the field.

“The biggest challenge I faced in sports was moving up to varsity for football and baseball as a sophomore,” he says. “I had to quickly learn how to adapt to the speed and intensity of varsity games.”

As a junior, Nolan faced another challenge closer to home, when his father was hospitalized for more than six months, missing his entire football season. “It was really difficult to not have him there, but I am glad everything worked out,” he says. “He was home in time to be able to watch me play baseball in the spring.”

Through the challenges and learning curves, Nolan has cherished his team as a multi-sport athlete, particularly the relationships built with his teammates.

“Being on a team with a group of guys who you love and would do anything for is truly special,” he says. Along with the camaraderie, he loves the feeling of competition and playing in a big game. “There is just something incredible about playing under the lights on Friday nights.”

Now, Nolan is entering his senior year with experience, education and humility gathered from his first three years at CHS. “Something I have learned from a coach is that if you think you know everything, you will never get better,” he says. “You always have to be learning new things to become a better athlete—no matter how good you think you are.”

THE SPOTLIGHT

He has also successfully competed in the Lake City Debate team and DECA program at the state level, and has participated in several school play productions.

“He has served for multiple years and now leads our school board’s Student Advisory Group (SAG),” Deanne says. “He created, successfully organizes and implements our annual LCHS Mental Health Week, bringing information and resources from the community into our school each year.”

Luke was instrumental in securing a Michael Phelps visit to district high schools, working countless hours preparing for the panel discussion for assemblies at each school.

Lake City High School principal Deanne Clifford describes senior Luke Sharon as an exceptional leader who is incredibly passionate about students’ socialemotional well-being.

“He is an excellent communicator and is a very strong voice for student advocacy at Lake City High School and across our district,” she says. “Luke is one of the most accomplished, effective student leaders I have ever worked with!”

Luke was elected class president each year in grades nine through 11 and has been involved in various leadership organizations, both in and out of school. Now this year’s Student Body president, Luke enjoys “bringing ideas that I hear from around the school to fruition,” he says. “I’ve noticed often that students, and even teachers, might express a desire for something to be done but lack a plan or a course of action. I enjoy taking those ideas, running with them, and making them a reality.”

Last year, Luke successfully petitioned the district for better privacy in the men’s restrooms, with the argument that “with better facilities, students will respect said facilities more.”

“With the help of Alexander Nipp, a student from our sister high school, we organized a mental health awareness event through our Interact Club of Coeur d’Alene,” Luke says. “The event featured Michael Phelps, who visited LCHS, Coeur d’Alene High School and the KROC Center to discuss his mental health journey. I had the privilege of sharing the stage with him, asking questions about his mental well-being.”

Luke says the students had to raise a significant amount of money, coordinate with various organizations, and meticulously plan the event to make it happen.

“Ultimately, we were able to share something valuable with our community. This topic is particularly important in our county, where the adult suicide rate is alarmingly high and the youth suicide rate is unfortunately on the rise.”

Luke says the most important life lesson he’s learned is that it’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s planning a school event or in managing his own mental health.

Upon graduation, Luke plans to earn a degree in political science or pre-law. “My main career interest is lawmaking,” he says. “I’ve volunteered on various political campaigns and, last spring, a few others and I had the honor of creating House Resolution 262, which supports teaching a well-rounded environmental education, and then lobbying for said resolution in D.C.”

SAILING FOR THE [DOG]SMILES

Nonprofit owner and crew compete in 750-mile engineless boat race to Alaska

42 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL september/october 2023

Shortly after Jon Totten moved back to North Idaho in the spring of 2020, while he and his friend Gabe Mills were sailing on Lake Pend Oreille under the full moon one evening, Gabe asked Jon if he had ever heard of the Race to Alaska (R2AK), a 750-mile engineless boat race considered something like the Iditarod on a sailboat. “And I was like, ‘Oh yeah, man, I’m a big fan,’” Jon recalled. “[Gabe asked], ‘Would you ever want to do that?’” “And I was like, ‘Are you kidding? I’ll go tomorrow. I’m in.’”

This past June, nearly three years later, Jon, Gabe and fellow crewmates Jay Taft and David Kilmer finally embarked on the marathon boat race, representing Team Dogsmile Adventures in the 2023 R2AK.

Despite challenges along the way and an unexpected finish, Jon and his team learned some lessons, made meaningful memories together and spread the word about Jon’s nonprofit sailing business, Dogsmile Adventures.

Jon grew up on a farm in Wisconsin before moving to Idaho when he was 18 to attend the University of Idaho. After graduating, Jon moved to Coeur d’Alene, where he took a job at North Idaho College, shortly thereafter learning to sail for the first time.

Jon quickly developed a passion for sailing, which eventually led him to a full-time career working on boats, first on the Pacific Coast

and later in the Caribbean. He spent five years as a sailing instructor and starter captain, living primarily on the island of Grenada. The work was good, but it wore on Jon over time. In 2019, feeling burned out and ready to give up, Jon made the decision to check into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and get sober.

“I decided to find a new direction in life at that point,” Jon recalled. “I wasn’t going to go back to work in the Caribbean, but I had a sailboat that I had purchased—the boat’s name is ‘Dogsmile’—and it was down there, and so I had to figure out what to do with it. That’s what led me on this whole journey to what I’m doing now.”

Jon had initially planned to bring his boat back to the U.S. to try and sell it in March 2020, but when the pandemic began his plans fell through. Ultimately, he decided to keep the boat and bring it back to North Idaho, embarking on a three-month journey of a lifetime.

“I traveled 24,000 miles by land, air and sea in the spring of 2020 while most people I knew were locked in their homes,” Jon recounted. “I brought the boat up here and then launched a nonprofit.”

Dogsmile Adventures is named for the light-hearted, toothy grin that Jon’s childhood dog used to exhibit, and the organization’s mission is to “create powerful opportunities for people to discover healing and potential through sailing adventures.”

When Gabe approached Jon about participating in the R2AK shortly after he had moved back to North Idaho, Jon saw it as an opportunity by CHRISTIAN WEANER

“WE SIGNED UP FOR AN ADVENTURE,

AND WE GOT ONE.”

to not only compete in the world-class boating competition he had always dreamed of but also as an opportunity to share the Dogsmile story with a wider audience. So, Team Dogsmile Adventures was born.

Because of the pandemic, the 2021 R2AK was modified to become the Washington 360, a shortened 360-mile version of the engineless boat race that ventured through the Puget Sound. Although Jon, Gabe and their fellow crewmates were bummed not to go to Alaska, they made the most of the WA360 and realized just how competitive they all could be, finishing third place out of 65 boats.

Equipped with the skills and experience from the WA360, the Team Dogsmile crew spent the next two years training and entered the 2023 R2AK confident in their ability to compete.

Team Dogsmile finished the first leg of the R2AK—a short 40mile jaunt from Port Townsend, Washington, up to Victoria, British Columbia—in under six hours. Beginning the much longer second leg of the trip, which stretches 710 miles from Victoria to Ketchikan, Alaska, the team felt prepared and ready to go.

But Jon, Gabe, Jay and David quickly realized that the further north they went, fewer boats surrounded them, all cell phone reception was lost, and the race became increasingly treacherous. “Once you get out there a way, it just gets wilder,” Jon described. “It gets colder, and the weather gets gnarlier the further you [travel].”

Then, on day six of the race and holding fast to second place, Team Dogsmile tragically experienced a catastrophic boat failure that caused them to abandon the competition and turn around. Jon and the rest of the crew were devastated, and they spent several “soul-crushing” days figuring out the logistics of how to get themselves, and their boat, back home.

Ultimately, however, as Jon reflected on the overall R2AK experience, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow from the disappointment of not finishing and acknowledged the positive publicity that Dogsmile Adventures has received from the event.

Jon said he and the Dogsmile crew are determined to run it back, hoping to compete in the 2025 R2AK.

“Now being able to look back at it, it was awesome,” Jon explained. “Jason said it best, ‘We signed up for an adventure, and we got one.’

“It was full on, man,” he continued. “And the story goes on.”

SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF A GROWING COMMUNITY

A Martini Affair raises funds for Safe Passage

Safe Passage invites those in the community to join them 5 to 9pm on Wednesday, October 4, at Seasons of Coeur d’Alene for the 11th annual A Martini Affair.

This fun-filled evening will deliver Season’s high-quality food, exceptional service and the signature Safe Passage Martini. “You’ll meet your friends there and see other friends of the community too; a great opportunity to meet community leaders and citizens across our community,” smiles Randee Goodwin, Board member and Development & Outreach Chair for Safe Passage.

In addition to the fabulous food, attendees will be treated to live music while making their way through the Wine Grab, in which wines valued at $25 or greater are wrapped, and guests pay just $10 for their chance to pull a bottle. Bid on incredible items during the silent auction, and raise your paddle during the lively live auction to raise the funds to support the vision of Safe Passage: to create a community free from violence.

Just 300 tickets will be sold, so be sure to get yours early. The cost to attend is $75 and increases to $85 on September 15. Tickets are available online at SafePassageID.org/events.

“You are a hard worker, and you need a little night out on the town! Why not make a difference forever, in the lives of another, by making our community safer!” encourages Leslie Johnson, director of

Development & Communications for Safe Passage. “Violence doesn’t discriminate, it can happen to anyone. As we work together to learn and raise awareness and ultimately raise funding, we can reach more than just the ⅓ percent of the population that is reporting abuse; this will impact generations to come.”

Serving the five northern counties, which consists of 250,000 residents, Safe Passage is the only agency of its kind in North Idaho and the only confidential, safe shelter between Missoula, Montana, and Spokane, Washington, and north from the Canadian Border to Riggins, Idaho.

“If we didn’t exist, North Idaho would have more police officers die in the line of duty (responding to a domestic abuse call is the largest cause of death on duty), more depression, suicide, murder, higher attendance in the Juvenile Detention Center and the County Jail, crimes against children, increased truancy and school dropouts, increase in drug and alcohol use and addiction, and more generations who demand their own way, responding with violence,” states Leslie.

“As we grow to meet the needs of our community, so will our needs. We are grateful for your support in every way to help us create a community free from violence!”

Safe Passage is located at 850 North Fourth Street in Coeur d’Alene. To find out more about all the incredible work this organization is doing, or to donate to their mission, visit SafePassageID.org or call 208.664.9303.

Top treatments and techniques for a youthful glow

52

While a glowing complexion and youthful skin

are always in style, skin-care trends can evolve and change as often as the seasons. Thanks to the latest beauty treatments and technologies, it’s now easier than ever to maintain your skin’s healthy glow into the fall.

your BEST

SEASON this SKIN

53

Start with some of 2023’s most popular skin-care trends:

MINIMALIST ROUTINES

Fall has a way of inspiring change and reigniting routine in every aspect of life. If it’s time to reimagine your skin-care routine this season, we have good news: Minimalism is in. Today’s trending skin-care routines require fewer products and less time (and often as a result, less spending).

With multi-use products and multi-faceted tools offering a handful of skin-friendly benefits at once, skin-care routines have become more streamlined. This comes at perfect timing for maintaining proper skin care during the busy back-to-school season.

Serums that pack a punch with vitamins, peptides, antioxidants and soothing acids are an easy way to stay at the top of your skin-care game with minimal product.

Advanced all-in-one tools like the TheraFace Pro and the Solawave Skincare Wand make it easy to perform several different therapies from home. The TheraFace Pro’s attachments include gentle pressurized therapy to release facial tension (battle puffiness, along with three different LED light rings to target fine lines, acne and wrinkles. The small, lightweight Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand completes multiple functions, including gentle massage and therapeutic Red Light Therapy.

With carefully multifaceted products and tools, you can streamline your beauty routine right along with your fall schedule.

SKIN CYCLING

Another way to stretch your beauty budget is skin cycling, an approach

that involves applying skin-care products intermittently, in a cycle of about four days at a time. Rather than using all of your products every day, you select a few to use during that four-day period. During that time, other products will be put on a ‘rest cycle’ and unused, until their application cycle begins.

Skin cycling promotes the strategic application of products, preventing skin irritation or potentially damaging over-application, by avoiding the use of many active ingredients at once. This technique is often recommended for sensitive skin, or those keeping it simple with the minimalist trend. Just use a few products for a few days, then switch to the others in your arsenal, and repeat.

SKIN SCULPTING TECHNOLOGIES

At salons and med spas, the latest beauty technologies are making it easier than ever to sculpt skin across the face and body. Popular new technologies and tools can quickly tone and tighten targeted areas for noticeable results in less time, all without a need for surgery.

CoolSculpting technology treats the desired area by targeting and freezing skin cells in a light, painless procedure. The cooling procedure causes the fat cells to die off naturally, resulting in enhanced toning and shaping in the affected area. Results typically continue to develop in the weeks following treatment.

Often called a needle-free alternative to fillers and Botox, the Emface uses radiofrequency technology paired with high-intensity electromagnetic stimulation to boost the strengthening, firming proteins in the skin like collagen and elastin. The result: a more sculpted appearance after a minimally invasive treatment that works to build muscle and eliminate fat all at once. With no needles and no recovery time required, Emface is a top choice for keeping the skin lifted and tightened.

Also using electric frequency technology, Emsculpt body sculpting technology can tighten and tone areas of the body in just 30-minute sessions. Results are often noticed in the form of visible slimming and toning, especially around the abs and core.

DEFINED LIPS

Lips are always a top focal point of the face, but the trendiest ways to define them have looked different over the years. Today’s trends celebrate definition over volume, using lighter fillers and opting for popular treatments to enhance the natural shape of the lips. During a lip flip procedure, the provider will typically make several Botox injections to the upper part of the lips. This helps relax (“flip”) the top lip, revealing more lip and less gum, resulting in the appearance of fuller lips without the use of added filler.

LASER SKIN THERAPY

Laser therapy can be highly targeted and used to address a wide array of skin concerns. from banishing dark spots and fine lines, to reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scarring and more.

In-office laser therapies use ultra-focused lasers that can target the desired areas of the skin, removing the outer layer to reveal the healthier skin underneath. The laser’s sharp focus allows this to happen without damage to surrounding tissues. The resulting collagen stimulation and elastin production brings the added benefit of restoring volume to the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

When it comes to anti-aging therapies, LED light therapy is almost as non-invasive as it gets. It involves using light at different wavelengths to produce targeted results for regeneration, firmness and texture. Often, a series of 20-minute treatments is recommended. Even better, the treatment involves lying under a machine emitting LED light—a good time to relax and treat your skin all at once!

HEALTH-FOCUSED, HOLISTIC TREATMENTS

Skin health is often about glowing from the inside out. Providers are now more often implementing holistic strategies into their treatment offerings, incorporating aspects of nutrition, metabolism, rejuvenation, mental health, supplementation and more.

Boosting the results of your skin-care routine with proper supplementation can further amplify the results of your beauty regimen, all while supporting total-body wellness. Top skinsupporting supplements often include vitamins A, C and E, collagen, and sun-protective glutathione.

TREAT YOUR SKIN THIS FALL

Everyone deserves some pampering from time to time. Whether it’s from the comfort of your home, or during a visit to your aesthetician, dedicating some time to skin care (and self-care) can help you maintain glowing skin well past summertime. With a minimalist routine and a few key products and treatments, autumn skin care has never been easier!

Lush Studio Beauty & Wellness

Passionate team dedicated to boosting your confidence … naturally!

As a licensed esthetician, lash artist and permanent makeup artist, Lindsay Hornby, owner of Lush Studio Beauty & Wellness in Coeur d’Alene, has made it her life’s work helping people look and feel beautiful—naturally and holistically—from the moment they wake up in the morning.

Every member of Lush’s team is there because they love people and are there to heal, help, and give to people in the community.

“Whether you’re looking to have encouraging chats during your treatments, ways to feel better in your own skin, or even join our monthly Women’s Empowerment Group … we are here for you!” encourages Lindsay.

She is joined by esthetician Becky James, who also specializes in skin-care treatments and lifts, facials and lashes, while Heather Lysne and Shannon Seth perform their Cryotherapy treatments.

“At Lush, we use natural treatments and methods to help our clients achieve their beauty and wellness results,” Lindsay affirms. “While sometimes injections and surgeries can be great in moderation, I prefer to instead create treatment plans for my clients that follow a more natural and holistic path.”

Lindsay was inspired to pursue a career in esthetics after she became a single mom, at which time she realized that by taking care of herself and investing in herself, she started to feel like herself again—“and I wanted to help so many others do the same,” she reflects. Lindsay opened the door to Lush Studio Beauty & Wellness in 2013 and couldn’t be more grateful to the many clients she’s been blessed to serve for the past decade.

At Lush, they have a genuine care and desire to see each individual client flourish on the right, natural plan. This begins at the initial consultation, meeting with clients and listening to their goals for their long-term well-being, then achieving the best results for them in the most natural way possible.

Inspiring active play for children’s health

59

Childhood is a phase of life brimming with energy and enthusiasm. It’s an age characterized by exploration, play and physical activity. However, in this digital era, electronic devices can often overshadow traditional play, hindering children’s physical development. To combat this issue, a delightful and engaging approach is to promote exercise through play, which effectively intertwines the benefits of physical activity with the joy of childhood fun.

Exercise is vital for a child’s overall health, enhancing growth, strengthening muscles, refining motor skills and promoting mental well-being. It has also been linked to improved academic performance and self-esteem. The World Health Organization suggests that children aged 5 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorousintensity physical activity daily. Encouraging exercise through play can help achieve these recommendations while offering an enjoyable experience to your child.

Play-based exercises can be facilitated both indoors and outdoors, involving a variety of activities such as hide and seek, tag, hopscotch, or even structured sports. These games not only support physical fitness but also stimulate cognitive, emotional and social development.

Outdoor play presents numerous opportunities for enjoyable exercise. Encouraging your child to participate in classic games like tag or capture the flag provides them with a cardiovascular workout while promoting teamwork and strategic thinking. Nature walks and bike rides offer a change of scenery and can stimulate curiosity about the environment. Even gardening can be a source of physical activity and a lesson about nature and responsibility. Outdoor playgrounds are another excellent avenue, where climbing, swinging and sliding aid in muscle development and coordination.

Indoor play can be just as beneficial if the weather or other circumstances don’t allow for outside activities. Create a mini-obstacle course using household items, fostering an adventurous spirit and facilitating coordination and problem-solving skills. Games like “Simon Says” or “Musical Chairs” encourage movement while promoting listening skills and quick decision-making. Dance parties can also be a fun way to get your child moving, fostering creativity and rhythm.

While encouraging exercise through play, it’s important to focus on fun rather than competition. Making the activity enjoyable increases the likelihood that the child will continue to engage in physical activity as they grow older. Additionally, it’s crucial to lead by example; children are more likely to follow an active lifestyle if they see their parents or guardians enjoying physical activities.

Involvement in the choice of activity is another crucial aspect. Offer your child a range of games or sports to choose from, catering to their interests and abilities. This autonomy can significantly increase their motivation to participate.

Combining play and exercise also paves the way for teaching vital life skills. Games involving teams can develop cooperation and communication skills, while solo games can enhance self-confidence and determination. Additionally, introducing the concepts of friendly competition, winning and losing can help children cope with similar situations in the future.

However, while incorporating exercise into play, remember to ensure safety. All activities should be age-appropriate and conducted in a secure environment. Use safety equipment when necessary, like helmets for bike riding or knee pads for rollerblading.

It’s also essential to maintain a balanced approach. Remember that rest and recovery are equally important in a child’s routine. Provide ample time for calm activities such as reading, drawing, or other creative pursuits.

An active childhood sets the foundation for a healthy and happy adulthood. Encouraging exercise through play, while ensuring safety and balance, can truly make fitness an enjoyable part of your child’s life. It is a practical and fun-filled strategy to ensure your child’s health and happiness, ensuring they are well-equipped to face the future.

As a parent or caregiver, it can seem like a daunting task to introduce and maintain an exercise routine for your child, particularly with the allure of screen time and other sedentary activities. However, by making it a playful and enjoyable experience, children are more likely to participate willingly and actively.

To effectively encourage exercise through play, it’s vital to be creative and innovative. Parents can transform mundane chores into fun games. For instance, tidying up can become a race to see who can pick up the most toys in a set time. Even a grocery shopping trip can be made into an activity involving walking and carrying items, while teaching about food groups and healthy choices.

Additionally, technology need not be the enemy of physical activity. There are numerous interactive video games that require physical movement, combining children’s interest in digital platforms with exercise. These games often incorporate dancing, sports and other active pursuits, seamlessly merging screen time with physical activity.

Consider involving your child in age-appropriate exercises that you do as well. Yoga, for example, can be introduced with simple poses, creating a shared experience that encourages mindfulness along with physical activity.

Lastly, it’s essential to praise and positively reinforce your child’s engagement in these play-based activities. Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to instill a sense of accomplishment and positivity toward exercise.

By adopting these strategies, parents can effectively integrate exercise into their child’s daily routine, fostering an enduring appreciation for physical activity. The key lies in making it enjoyable and participatory, effectively ensuring that exercise through play becomes a cherished part of their childhood and beyond.

Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue.

Welcome to the world of preserving your favorite garden goods for a healthy winter! As the growing season comes to an end, wouldn’t it be wonderful to enjoy the taste of your homegrown produce year-round? With the art of preservation, you can do just that. This guide will walk you through five essential steps to ensure your fruits, vegetables and herbs stay fresh and flavorful throughout the colder months. Get ready to unlock the secrets of successful food preservation—and fill your pantry with nature’s bounty.

Harvesting at Peak Freshness

To preserve the best flavor and nutritional value, pick your garden produce at its peak ripeness. Avoid overripe or damaged items, as they won’t preserve well. Look for vibrant colors, firm textures and fragrant aromas, indicating optimal flavor and nutrient content. Harvest in the early morning when temperatures are cool to retain maximum freshness and minimize wilting.

Choosing the Right Preservation Method

Different foods require different preservation techniques. Options include canning, freezing, dehydrating, fermenting and pickling. Select the method that suits your produce and desired outcomes. Consider factors such as the texture, flavor, color and intended use of the preserved goods to make an informed decision. Experiment with various methods to discover your favorite preservation techniques and create a diverse array of preserved delights.

Pickle Perfection: Garden-to-jar adventures!

1. Harvest fresh cucumbers from your garden. Choose firm and small to medium-sized cucumbers for the best results.

2. Wash the cucumbers thoroughly under running water and remove any dirt or debris.

3. Slice the cucumbers into thin, round discs or leave them whole, depending on your preference.

4. Prepare a brine solution by combining one part water and one part vinegar in a large pot.

5. Add salt, sugar and desired spices (such as dill, garlic or mustard seeds) to the brine mixture, adjusting the quantities to suit your taste.

6. Bring the brine to a boil, stirring until the salt and sugar are completely dissolved.

7. Pack the cucumber slices or whole cucumbers tightly into sterilized glass jars.

8. Pour the hot brine over the cucumbers, ensuring they are fully submerged.

9. Seal the jars with lids and allow them to cool to room temperature.

10. Place the jars in the refrigerator and let the pickles sit for at least 24 hours before enjoying them. The longer they sit, the more flavorful they become.

71 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

Proper Preparation and Packaging

Clean, trim and prepare your garden goods according to the chosen preservation method. Remove any bruised or damaged portions to ensure quality preservation. Blanch vegetables before freezing to retain their color and texture. Use appropriate containers like sterilized mason jars, freezer bags or vacuum-sealed bags to maintain freshness. Label each container with the contents and date for easy identification in the future. Proper preparation and packaging are crucial for successful preservation and prolonged enjoyment of your garden’s bounty.

Preserving Techniques

Explore different preservation techniques to diversify your options. For canning, learn about water bath canning, suitable for high-acid foods like jams and pickles, or pressure canning for low-acid foods such as vegetables and meats. Freezing involves blanching certain vegetables to preserve their quality, while dehydrating requires removing moisture to extend shelf life. Experiment with these techniques to find the best methods for your favorite garden goods.

Storage and Shelf Life

Ensure your preserved goods are stored properly in a cool, dry place away from light and heat. Mason jars should be stored in a dark pantry, while frozen items should be kept in a wellorganized freezer. Label each item with the contents and date for easy identification. Keep track of the recommended shelf life for each preservation method to prioritize consumption and maintain optimal quality. Regularly check stored items for any signs of spoilage or deterioration, and discard them if necessary. With proper storage, your preserved goods can last through the winter and beyond, providing nourishment and enjoyment.

The Benefits of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for Cosmetic Treatments

Unlocking the power of your own blood to enhance beauty

courtesy of PURE MEDICAL SPA

Have you heard of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)? It’s a fascinating and powerful process that can be used to enhance beauty treatments. It’s a revolutionary technique that has recently been gaining popularity within the world of aesthetic medicine and offers patients a unique opportunity to use their own body’s resources for cosmetic enhancement.

At Pure Medical Spa, we believe in taking a holistic approach to treatments, which is why PRF is so important for our practice. This method uses your own platelets and fibrin, both of which are essential elements in the healing process. The PRF treatment is a relatively simple procedure that involves drawing your blood and then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate out the different components.

The PRF is then injected back into the areas where you’d like to see improvement, such as wrinkles, scars or thinning hair. The process stimulates the body’s natural healing powers, resulting in faster healing time and better results when compared to traditional procedures.

The PRF procedure can be used in a variety of ways, including cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers or laser resurfacing. It can also help with injury recovery and chronic pain relief by regenerating tissue. The benefits of PRF are numerous and include improved collagen production, enhanced tissue healing, reduced inflammation, minimized scarring and accelerated wound healing.

Additionally, PRF procedures have little to no side effects due to their use of the body’s own blood and platelets. In comparison to traditional treatments, such as chemical peels or dermal fillers, PRF is a noninvasive, cost-effective treatment that offers natural and long-lasting results with minimal downtime.

For those looking to improve their complexion or reduce signs of aging without the need for surgery, PRF is a great alternative. At Pure Medical Spa, our experienced team of professionals is dedicated to offering you the highest level of care and customer service so that you can feel and look your best. Whether you’re looking to reduce wrinkles, improve collagen production or regenerate tissues, Pure Medical Spa is here to help.

With the arrival of fall, nature paints a stunning backdrop of warm hues and vibrant colors, inspiring us to update our beauty color palette accordingly. From the changing leaves to cozy sweaters, it’s time to infuse our makeup, nails and clothing with the captivating shades that embody the essence of the season. Let’s explore the top beauty colors for fall that will keep you effortlessly stylish and in harmony with autumn’s enchanting palette.

Makeup

Warm Earth Tones: Embrace the warmth of the season with makeup shades inspired by nature’s earthy tones. Opt for eyeshadows in terracotta, burnt sienna and deep browns to create sultry and captivating eye looks. These colors add depth and richness, whether you’re going for a natural everyday look or a more dramatic evening vibe. A matte bronzer in a warm brown shade can help you achieve a sun-kissed glow even as the days grow shorter.

Berry and Wine Shades: As the leaves change color, it’s only fitting to incorporate berry and wine shades into your makeup routine. Choose deep plum, raspberry and burgundy lip colors for a bold and vampy look. These shades add a touch of mystery and sophistication, instantly elevating any outfit. Pair a berry lip with minimal eye makeup to let your lips take center stage and make a statement.

Burnished Metallics: Fall is the perfect season to experiment with burnished metallics like copper, bronze and gold. These shades add warmth and a touch of glamor to your makeup look. Apply a shimmering bronze or gold eyeshadow to create a beautiful, glowing eye look. You can also incorporate a metallic highlighter on the high points of your face for a radiant and ethereal glow. Metallic accents in your eye makeup can add a touch of luxury and sophistication.

Muted Neutrals: While fall is often associated with rich and bold colors, muted neutrals also play a significant role in creating a versatile and sophisticated nail color palette. Opt for soft taupe, dusty rose and cool greys for a subtle and polished appearance. Muted neutrals work well for both everyday wear and special occasions, offering a chic and timeless look.

Deep Burgundy: No fall nail color palette is complete without deep burgundy. This rich and luxurious shade exudes elegance and sophistication. It’s a perfect choice for creating a statement manicure that complements the season. From deep burgundy nails to incorporating this color as an accent shade, it adds a touch of boldness and character to your overall look.

Forest Green: One of the standout colors for fall is forest green. This deep, earthy shade captures the essence of the season perfectly. Experiment with forest green nail polish to add a unique and trendy twist to your manicure. The Benefits of Routine

Back to school and back on schedule

As we shift back to school, embracing a structured routine can yield unexpected health benefits. An established routine enhances both physical and mental health. On a physical level, maintaining consistent sleep and meal schedules helps regulate our bodies' internal clocks, fostering better sleep and digestion. A nutritious, timely breakfast jumpstarts metabolism and improves concentration, and regular exercise bolsters overall health and energy.

Mentally, routines reduce stress and anxiety. When we know what's coming, we're less likely to feel overwhelmed. Regular study periods support academic success, while scheduled downtime aids relaxation. Importantly, don't forget to incorporate breaks for self-care: reading, meditating, or enjoying a favorite hobby.

Remember, flexibility is key. Routines should be guidelines, not strict rules, and it's healthy to deviate occasionally. Ultimately, routines should support, not hinder, our well-being. Consistency in scheduling can truly pave the way for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

The drive climbs to the top of the hill and follows the peninsula through the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which is starkly beautiful with the rows and rows of uniform white tombstones. Plan to spend a few hours at the monument to enjoy the museum and watch the film. Enjoy views of San Diego and Coronado before taking the short hike to the lighthouse. The monument is also famed for its tide pools along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Even if it is not low tide, it is still worth a visit to hike along the rocky shoreline.

Insider Tip: Travel to the overflow parking lot (Lot 2) for another view. The monument is one of the premier bird watching spots in San Diego, and many birds congregate in the area below Lot 2.

Nutrient-Packed Granola Bars

Perfect snack for kids—and adults—on the go!

Tip

Ingredients

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup nuts

(almonds, walnuts or cashews), chopped

1/2 cup dried fruits

(raisins, cranberries or chopped dates)

1/4 cup honey or maple syrup

1/4 cup nut butter

(peanut butter or almond butter)

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup ground flaxseed

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)

A pinch of salt

These nutrient-packed granola bars are versatile, and you can customize them by adding other ingredients like chia seeds, dark chocolate chips, or even protein powder to boost their nutritional value. Enjoy!

Method

Method

• Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking dish or pan with parchment paper and set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts, dried fruits, ground flaxseed, shredded coconut, cinnamon (if using) and salt. Mix well.

• In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the honey or maple syrup, nut butter, coconut oil and vanilla extract. Stir until everything is melted and well combined. Remove from heat.

• Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Use a spatula or your hands to mix everything together until all the dry ingredients are coated and evenly distributed.

• Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish or pan. Use your hands or the back of a spoon to press it down firmly and make sure it’s evenly spread.

• Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.

• Remove from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, refrigerate for about an hour to firm up.

• Once the granola mixture is firm, remove it from the pan and cut it into bars or squares of your desired size.

• Store the granola bars in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.

Indulge in Festive Fun

Downtown Coeur d’Alene transforms to set the scene for Oktoberfest this fall on September 15 and 16! The Downtown Coeur d’Alene Association invites guests on a journey to sample more than 30 Oktoberfest-style beers and ciders, poured by local downtown businesses that will transform into tasting rooms and biergartens to participate in the fun.

Pouring locations will be scattered across the downtown area, along with a Prostgarten at the Wilma Lot on the Corner of Second Street and Sherman Avenue. Live music will be scheduled on the STCU Stage to enjoy from the biergarten! Saturday’s guests will see the Coeur d’Alene Resort Breezeway transform into a Biergarten, hosting live music along with stein holding and costume contests, directly between the Plaza Shops and Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Between sips, stop to indulge in the flavors of Germany with special Oktoberfest menus arriving at downtown restaurants. With cold beer, great food, live music, and the feeling of

fall arriving in on Sherman Avenue, Oktoberfest presents a perfect way to welcome autumn in Coeur d’Alene!

“Oktoberfest tickets are now on sale,” confirms Chloe Linton of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association. Guests aged 21 and older can secure their event ticket and commemorative glass online, with several glassware and ticketing options available. Limited admission will be available at the door starting at 3pm on September 15. Save yourself additional processing fees (and funds for an extra drink ticket), and pay in cash on the day of the event!

Each Oktoberfest ticket purchase is valid for admission on both Friday and Saturday at all Oktoberfest locations. When accompanied by a ticket holder, children and designated drivers will receive free admission! Arrive for event checkin at the Coeur d’Alene Plaza Shops, then make your way through the festive downtown fun.
