Embracing the New Year As we bid farewell to the year that was
and embrace the dawn of 2024, it is with immense joy and anticipation that I extend my warmest greetings to each and every one of you. The turning of the calendar not only signifies the passage of time but also opens the door to new opportunities, fresh perspectives and untold adventures. In the spirit of the new year, our team continues its commitment to bringing you captivating stories that shine a light on the people, the places, the organizations that make Coeur d’Alene so special. As we navigate the uncharted waters of the coming months, our resolve to deliver quality and engaging publications remains steadfast. This issue, our first of 2024, is our Weddings + Wine Edition, featuring a variety of stories, from hosting a memorable rehearsal dinner at home, thoughtful gifts for the newlyweds, planning the ultimate honeymoon, prepping your skin for the big day, a romantic getaway to Walla Walla, and more!
We highlight Lake City Playhouse as they work to rebuild Kootenai County’s longestrunning brick-and-mortar theater, as well as Make-A-Wish North Idaho and its new home in Post Falls. We put the spotlight on Beacon Hill events, The Holistic Hairstylist, and Northwest Integrative Physiotherapy. You’ll find a lot more in this issue, including a wide variety of wonderful community events, such as Hospice of North Idaho’s annual Wine Taste. Your continued support and engagement are the fuel that propels us forward, and we are grateful for the privilege of being your trusted source of local stories and entertainment. May the year be filled with joy, prosperity, and the fulfillment of your aspirations. Here’s to 2024—a year of boundless possibilities and remarkable discoveries!

P
lanning a wedding is an exhilarating journey filled with endless decisions, from selecting the perfect venue to choosing the color scheme and floral arrangements. Among these decisions, the rehearsal dinner often stands out as a heartfelt and intimate gathering that sets the tone for the big day. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a charming and cost-effective option, offering a warm and personal touch to the celebration. From the guest list to menu, seating and entertainment, it’s time to create a memorable rehearsal dinner that you and your guests will cherish for years to come. Invitations and Guest List. The first step in hosting a successful rehearsal wedding dinner at home is to create a guest list and send out invitations. Typically, the guest list includes close family members, bridal party members, and a few close friends. Sending invitations well in advance will ensure that your guests have enough time to RSVP and mark their calendars. You can choose to send physical invitations, digital invites, or even a phone call, depending on your preference and budget. Décor and Theme. Set the tone for your rehearsal dinner with a carefully chosen theme and décor. Whether it’s a casual backyard barbecue or an elegant sit-down affair, the décor should reflect your personal style and the ambiance you want to create. Consider table centerpieces, linens, candles and flowers that harmonize with your theme and color palette. Utilize your home’s existing charm and features to enhance the overall atmosphere. Menu Selection. The menu is a critical component of any rehearsal dinner. You can choose to cook the meal yourself, enlist the help of family and friends, or hire a caterer for a stress-free experience. Ensure that your menu caters to the dietary preferences and restrictions of your guests. Incorporate a mix of appetizers, main courses, sides and desserts to provide a variety of options.

Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to
interact with one another. Beverage Options. Selecting the right beverages is essential to complement your menu. Offering a range of options is a good practice. Include non-alcoholic choices like sparkling water, fruit juices and soft drinks, as well as alcoholic options such as wine, beer and a signature cocktail. Make sure to have a designated area for a bar or beverage station where guests can help themselves or be served by a bartender if you have one. Seating and Layout. Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to interact with one another. Consider the layout of your home and how you can optimize the space for dining. If the weather permits, an outdoor setup can be a beautiful option. Use tables, chairs and linens that match your theme and create an inviting atmosphere. Entertainment. Entertainment can take various forms depending on the atmosphere you wish to create. Background music is a must, whether it’s a playlist of your favorite songs or a live acoustic 24

performance. Additionally, you could incorporate games, a photo booth, or even a short video montage celebrating your journey as a couple. These elements can help break the ice and keep your guests engaged throughout the evening. Personal Touches. One of the advantages of hosting a rehearsal dinner at home is the opportunity to infuse personal touches into the event. Display photos of the couple throughout their relationship, create a memory wall, or set up a slideshow showcasing cherished moments. These details add sentimental value to the celebration and help tell your unique love story. Lighting and Ambiance. The right lighting can transform your home into a magical setting for the rehearsal dinner. Consider string lights, lanterns, candles and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Soft, dimmed lighting can enhance the overall mood and create a cozy atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection among your guests.

Rentals and Equipment. Depending on the size of your guest list and the space available, you may need to rent additional equipment such as tables, chairs, dinnerware and glassware. It’s crucial to plan for these rentals well in advance to ensure availability and to avoid any last-minute surprises. Weather Contingency. If you plan to host your rehearsal wedding dinner outdoors, it’s essential to have a weather contingency plan. Renting a tent or marquee can provide shelter in case of rain or extreme heat. This ensures that your event can proceed as planned, regardless of the weather conditions. Capture the Memories. Finally, don’t forget to capture the special moments of your rehearsal wedding dinner. Hire a photographer or designate a friend or family member to take photographs throughout the evening. These pictures will serve as precious keepsakes, preserving the memories of this intimate gathering with loved ones. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a heartfelt and memorable experience that brings your nearest and dearest together in a warm and intimate setting. With personal touches and attention to detail, this evening is sure to be a cherished memory for you and your guests for years to come.

5th & Cedar: In-Town Luxury Condos Meet the developers, Rob and Kellee Daugherty
S
andpoint has been a cornerstone for their family and business in many ways. 5th & Cedar is part of their vision and opportunity to give back. Since 2000, Rob and Kellee have lived in and loved Sandpoint — teaching their three children to ski Schweitzer, boat and swim in Lake Pend Oreille, and even hosting Camp Daugherty family reunions here! They started Daugherty Management in 2009, a luxury vacation rental and property management company that manages over 100 homes. They believe in God, family, partnerships, hard work, creative ideas, kindness and optimism, along with a smattering of daily joyfulness, gratitude and laughter. The vision for 5th & Cedar came from an opportunity to build a new cornerstone. Working with Boden Architecture, the unique design would begin the regentrification of a key corner of town with a mixed-use building that looked like an updated version of the brick, metal and glass architecture of the Granary District. A business on the street level would have great exposure and opportunity. Then, designing six high-quality condominiums
above would give people an opportunity to live, walk and easily participate in resort town living. Since Sandpoint has no large resort hotels in town, investors or owners who like their real estate assets to perform could choose to make their home available for professionally managed luxury boutique rentals. Resort towns have resort amenities, so it was also important to have a rooftop entertainment area for condo owners with a private area to take in lake and mountain views, lounge, barbecue, sit around a fire table, enjoy the outdoor TV or relax in the hot tub. Finally, in order to create parking, the Daughertys bought an additional parcel to add garages for condo owners and parking for the business. Tomlinson Sothebys, Sandpoint’s largest real estate company, immediately seized the business opportunity and anchors the entire main floor. The Daughertys partnered with Base Camp Design to professionally design and furnish the interior of the top-floor corner unit. This helps future owners to see how a home can be furnished, and Base Camp offers custom design packages. Sandpoint will always be a cornerstone for the Daugherty family, and it is their hope 5th & Cedar will be a new foundation for the future of Sandpoint.

rowing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Nadine Waeghe fondly remembers spending her time outdoors, on the playground, and participating in outdoor recreation, community youth and organized school sports. “I experienced typical bumps and bruises, growing pains and sports injuries,” she recalls. “Even then I was inquisitive, analytical and pragmatic, so I never settled for the ineffectual standard answers provided by those I encountered in the
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024
medical system: ‘You’ll outgrow it.’ ‘Give it a few days of rest.’ ‘Just put some ice on it.’ I decided to study pre-med in college with the intention of being a better sports medicine doctor than what I had experienced.” It was during her time working as a student athletic trainer in college, side by side with a variety of health care professionals— including sports medicine and orthopedic specialists—that
she realized she preferred being in the trenches with the athletes. This is when she redirected her focus to athletic training and physical therapy. “As my PT/AT career progressed, I kept asking questions and diving deeper into the health of the whole person. That led me to further my education in functional medicine, which allows me to provide comprehensive care for the human being trusting me to help,” Nadine shares. Nadine has worked in places around the nation and the world— both within the Western medicine health care system and privately outside of the system. Having a broad understanding of what is available and what works from the traditional, alternative, ancient, and metaphysical perspective, she can quickly identify the primary contributors to injuries and illness and offer practical therapies and/or recommendations for interventions known to be effective treatments to restore optimal health. Today, as a certified athletic trainer, licensed physical therapist, and certified functional medicine practitioner with more than 25 years of experience in sports medicine and expertise in biomechanics, osteopathic manual therapy and integrative physiotherapy, Nadine Waeghe is the proud owner of NW Integrative Physiotherapy, working with clients in the area since March 2022. At NW Integrative Physiotherapy, Nadine specializes in: Injury Treatment and Recovery: Classic sports medicine services including injury treatment, rehabilitation and recovery, with a unique approach, as well as injury prevention therapies, injury risk assessment, and remote telehealth injury evaluation and recommendations. Integrative Health Solutions: Comprehensive evaluation, health history review, physiological systems analysis, and specialty testing, guiding you to the root cause of your health challenges, followed by a variety of therapeutic interventions and recommendations to address those underlying issues with the intent to optimize your health for the long term. Education for Prevention and Performance: Based on the latest research and technology in biological sciences, Nadine offers education at the individual, community, and professional practitioner level.
Specialty Services: Detailed service for the highly motivated performer specific to their wants and needs such as equipment analysis, video biomechanical analysis, functional foot orthotics and individualized performance nutrition recommendations. Nadine provides services outside of the insurance-based health care system, which allows her more time and detail in addressing her patients’ unique needs with a comprehensive scope of practice. “A whole person is presented to me, not just a body part. Working together with the client, we will address all the physiological and physical parts that constitute that whole person while focused on their health and performance goals,” Nadine affirms. “Best outcomes are achieved through working as a team including the client, their family, their trusted health care providers, their fitness/ wellness providers, and accessing my vast network of experts and colleagues as needed.” Another convenience of NW Integrative Physiotherapy is that Nadine offers mobile service, by coming to your preferred location such as your home or office. Having the ability to restore hope is what Nadine finds most fulfilling when it comes to the work she does. “I see many people who have been passed around the health care system without effective care and some who don’t bother because they assume they won’t get the help they need. I love listening to their stories, assessing their health challenges, and offering solutions that will change the quality of their lives. Sometimes all you need is to flip the correct ‘circuit breaker’ to reset the energy and direction of your life,” she smiles. Serving North Idaho and virtually anywhere in the world, if you are seeking some guidance to restore, enhance or optimize your health, Nadine welcomes you to reach out.

“I
teach for the stories,” says Shanie Mantz, educator at Bryan Elementary School. “Most people have a story they tell themselves about why they aren’t successful in school. Special education teachers get the unique opportunity to intervene at a challenging time in a student’s life. It provides us the opportunity to work with general education teachers, families and school staff to change the stories students tell themselves about school.” Shanie says from the 16 years she has spent teaching, there isn’t one student she hasn’t learned something from. Now, she works with children in kindergarten, first grade and second grade at Bryan. “Teachers never stop teaching. The work teachers do is hard. Often, we don’t get to see the results of our work,” Shanie says, “but the few times we do get to see them, it’s incredibly gratifying. Changing the trajectory of someone’s life is neither easy nor simple. That’s what teachers do.”

The work doesn’t stop outside the classroom; Shanie says something the general public may not know about teachers is just how much they pour into their students’ lives. “It’s not a 9 to 5 job. It requires all of your emotional, physical and mental energy in a way that nothing else can,” she describes. “I think Parker Palmer said it best: ‘When you love your work that much, as many teachers do, the only way to get out of trouble is to go deeper
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024
in,’” Shanie says. “As a teacher, going deeper means sitting with a student who’s having a rough moment and fully listening to them through my lunch break and eating lunch after school. It means dropping off a Turkey Trot pie to the home of a student who wasn’t there to receive it, in my own car, on my own time, with my own gas. Going deeper means although every student cannot have an individualized education plan, every single one deserves to have an individual experience. When students walk away from my math group, they feel seen, heard and valued.” Shanie says she knows the people of Coeur d’Alene know teachers care. “The recent levy and school board elections show that the city values education and believes in the direction that District 271 is going,” she says. “I feel lucky to live, work, and raise my children in Coeur d’Alene Public Schools.” Above all, Shanie hopes to instill in her students that they “can do hard things.” It’s simple but profound. “If I can give students a template for doing hard things, they can be successful in anything,” Shanie says. “We teach students this by giving them repeated opportunities to succeed, fail, and work hard every day. From these, they can learn to persevere, press through challenges, motivate themselves, work hard, set goals, drown out the naysayers, buckle down, advocate for themselves. We can all learn how to do hard things.”

Jacob takes pride in the success and team camaraderie he’s experienced as a crosscountry athlete. “In just my senior season, I helped our team go undefeated through eight races, including the Nike Cross Regionals Northwest to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, where we placed 11th as a team— the only race where we didn’t bring home the boys team title this season,” he says. Of his team, he says, “We fight for each other. This season was made possible because of our dedication for one another and our collective goals. It has been a special thing to be on this team, and I enjoy every part of it, and the love I have for my fellow brothers on the team is what makes it so especially amazing to me.” Academically, Jacob is near the top of his class with an unweighted 4.0 GPA and weighted GPA of close to 4.5. He competed on the Varsity 1 Scholastics team and has represented successful CHS teams in various math competitions.
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024
After graduation, Jacob plans to serve a twoyear mission for his church. “I am excited for this opportunity and set on giving up my time to serve because I know it will bless my life,” he says. Following the mission, Jacob plans to attend college and wants to continue pursuing his passion for running. While he’s still deciding on his college of choice, Jacob’s career interests lie in the medical field and accounting. “These careers interest me because I find the way the body works fascinating, and I enjoy helping people through difficult things.” Jacob says balance has been one of his biggest challenges as a student-athlete and active member of his church. He credits his parents for helping him be able to do it all. “My parents make a lot of my life possible,” he says. “I am grateful for them because they help me take care of myself. I have also found comfort in taking breaks from my busy schedule to have fun with friends and family.” Above all, high school has taught Jacob that life will always work out. “Through every hardship, there has always been a light at the end of the tunnel, a peak of the mountain, and an end to the struggle,” he says. “When I have been stressed, overwhelmed and hopeless, there has always been something to lift me up,” through injuries, academic setbacks, changing friendships, and other difficult circumstances. “No matter how hard the circumstance or how low I have felt at times, I have always gotten back up, I have always ended in a better spot, and I have always been blessed.”

ake City High School senior Nathan Edmonds is very involved in school as the Associated Student Body treasurer. “Some of my other achievements include being a two-time State Debate qualifier, and a fourtime State Speech qualifier,” Nathan says. He has earned a Varsity letter for tennis, three for debate and two for academics, and has held an unweighted 4.0 GPA throughout his high school career. “Nathan is an extremely intelligent young man,” shares Lake City Principal Deanne Clifford. “He is our ASB treasurer and an all-around fantastic human being. In a conversation with Nathan, you will very quickly discover his charming character, incredible sense of humor and quick wit.” Nathan says his two favorite school activities have been Student Council and the Debate team. “In both, I think my favorite aspect is the group dynamic,” he shares. “In these activities, I enjoy all the relationships I’ve been able to make, and the common goal we share as a group, especially in Student Council. I enjoy how we all work together and have a good time together, while working on lots of different projects to benefit our school, students and community.”
“My parents both teach; my mom teaches first grade and my dad teaches high school history,” he says. “I also just enjoy learning and discussing interesting topics. I have always been interested in history, especially ancient cultures, and that also plays into my career interests. So, having two parents in the education field, a love for learning and an interest in history all add up to my interest in being a high school history teacher!” His involvement in activities in and out of school has taught him time management. “Balancing all of them along with doing the work for my classes, while still trying to have time to do things with my family and friends, and have time to decompress, has been difficult throughout high school,” he says. “I think that each year I have gotten better at handling my time more effectively and prioritizing my time better, because I’ve had a lot of practice. My attitude has been that sometimes you just have to get stuff done, however possible.” Nathan says one life lesson he’ll take away from his time in high school is the importance of doing things you enjoy, with people you enjoy. “In all of the activities and classes that I have been in, the people are what make it enjoyable,” he says. “The best classes are the ones with interesting conversation and fun classmates, and I have prioritized doing activities with my friends, so that we can work together and have a good time within that activity. For example, my debate partner is also the ASB president and my classmate in several classes. I will remember how big a difference enjoyable people can make on an already enjoyable activity.”

“Lake City Playhouse has been a very important part of the theater community in the Inland Northwest,” shares Brooke Wood, Lake City Playhouse director. “It’s one of the oldest brick-and-mortar theaters in Idaho. It was the home to the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, and it has been a training ground for many actors who have gone on to work in the industry.” The building is over a century old and was planted in its current spot on Garden Avenue in Coeur d’Alene in 1949, according to Brooke. “It started as a church and became a theater in the 1960s as the original home of CST, formerly the Carousel Players.” Brooke shares that more than anything, the little theater on Garden has served as a place for people involved in the performing arts to call home. “LCP is a place that has opened its doors to actors and
patrons alike to learn about themselves and the world through the lens of a show,” she says. The theater prides itself on being “a home for all who seek a place to be creative and self-expressive,” including children, adults, performers, learners, and those who love to watch a good show. Before the flood, the theater was more than ready to emerge from the pandemic on a high note. “In 2021, we were very excited to come out of the pandemic in a very positive manner, with money in our bank account and ready to do some updating on the building heating system,” Brooke reflects, a goal they were “so happy to reach.”

he longest-running brick-and-mortar theater in Kootenai County, Lake City Playhouse has been awaiting its 60th season since before the pandemic, halted by a massive flood in 2021. Now, the theater looks to the community to help it rebuild, brick by brick, and see its future finally come to life.
Then, a large water pipe broke in the facility, resulting in broken bathroom pipes and “water up to our board members’ thighs,” Brooke recalls. The flood severely damaged the bathrooms and most of their costumes. “We were devastated by the outcome because it meant we would need to put off our season yet again,” Brooke says. “Due to the age of the building, the cost was more than insurance would cover. We made the decision to go to the public in 2023, and the response

MANY WONDERFUL THINGS PLANNED!” has been absolutely amazing. Our town doesn’t want to see this gem go away any more than we do. There isn’t anything like the playhouse.” Now they offer the community the chance to help rebuild the theater “brick by brick” and offer support by sponsoring bricks with online donations. The theater will feature each donation on their new brick patio and outdoor gathering space at the front of the building. Brooke describes the fundraiser as a great way for people to place a “tangible stamp” on helping to save the playhouse. This spring, the theater hopes to have a completed brick patio, along with a beer and wine license. Their idea is for the community to come and enjoy a beverage on the patio, while taking a look at all the people and businesses that helped them reopen. “We’re just getting started,” she says. “We have a three-tier plan to get our playhouse open and renewed.” The plan includes reopening with a facility fixed from the flood, including bathrooms, heating and cooling, seats and lights. Brooke says the theater’s hope is to eventually expand their footprint, leaving its integrity intact but adding offices and rehearsal space to rent out as residual income. They hope to host a community center for people to visit to train in theater, no matter their age or socioeconomic status, with the addition of after-school programming and more offerings. In the meantime, Lake City Playhouse has an entire season planned to kick off upon reopening, with the hopes to be ready by the end of June 2024. “We also have several fundraising events planned to continue monetary flow toward reopening,” Brooke adds. “We’ve just started our comeback and have many wonderful things planned!” Brooke says the community can best support Lake City Playhouse through donations, made at LakeCityPlayhouse.com. With the community’s help, Lake City Playhouse looks to the future with hope. “Coeur d’Alene has said goodbye to a lot of older buildings,” Brooke says. “Our major goal is to not join them. The charm of the playhouse is her superpower.”

ake-A-Wish has made its home in Idaho and has hit the ground running with record-breaking impact.
“Make-A-Wish Idaho grants over 100 wishes per year. Last year, we granted 127, a chapter record, and this year, we are looking to grant up to 140,” says Josh Peterson, communications manager for Make-A-Wish Idaho. “The state has experienced unprecedented growth, and medical referrals are up by 100 percent, another record.” Make-A-Wish Idaho finished 2023 counting down to another major milestone: granting their 2,000th wish. “We’re very excited to reach this milestone,” Josh shared in late November. “We are currently counting down on social media, and if all goes according to plan, our 2,000th wish should be [completed] on December 30, 2023, the day our 2,000th wish family returns home from Disney World.” Josh says Make-A-Wish is “absolutely thrilled” to now have an office in Post Falls, serving the wish kids and families of North Idaho. “Having a presence in the community will increase referrals of children to our program, bringing the magic of a wish into their lives. “Wishes provide an emotional bulwark against the mental trauma that stems from having a childhood critical illness. They provide hope and joy during a frightening, isolating and painful ordeal,” Josh continues. “According to the 2022 National

Wish Impact Survey, wishes help relieve traumatic stress, act as a coping mechanism during treatment, bring families closer together and improve the child’s medical compliance. The majority of wish kids survive their qualifying illnesses, and a wish often provides important closure to their medical journey and allows families to reunite and heal outside of a medical setting.” Most children are referred to Make-A-Wish Idaho by a physician, a social worker or a family member. “A medical board reviews their referral and determines eligibility, and if they are eligible, they receive a wish.” Children must be between the ages of 2 1/2 and under 18 years old at the time of referral. Josh says granting a wish is an effort that takes the entire community. “Volunteer wish granters work hard to ensure wishes are tailored to the specific desires of the child and that the wish feels special,” he shares. “Just last week, a child named Ronan, who loves Star Wars, received a wonderful surprise when a squadron of Star Wars cosplay actors showed up in professional Star Wars costuming at a local family fun center and told Ronan that his wish to go to Disneyland was coming true. 48
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024
“Ronan said that the wish reveal ‘was the best day of his life,’” Josh shares. “We’re hoping that Disneyland can top it, though!” Josh credits Make-a-Wish volunteers for sprinkling in the extra magic. “The staff handles the logistics of making sure that families get to Disneyland safely, books their hotels and flights, coordinates with their medical professionals, and deals with the rare travel hiccup.” Josh says the wishes also wouldn’t be possible without donations from the Idaho community, Make-A-Wish Idaho receives no government funding and is completely powered by small-dollar donations, event fundraising, corporate sponsorships and grants. Community members can get involved in supporting MakeA-Wish by donating to Make-A-Wish Idaho, volunteering as a wish granter and working with families as they look forward to their wish, and hosting a benefit event. With Make-A-Wish close to home, it’s now easier than ever to impact a local child’s life. To learn more about Make-A-Wish Idaho, visit Wish.org/idaho.

The Show Must Go On New faces in fine arts continue NIC’s public performances b y G E R R Y M CC R AY, N O RT H I D A H O CO L L E G E
F
or decades, North Idaho College (NIC) Fine Arts has put on performances ranging from jazz concerts to dramatic plays. These shows, consisting of students and community members, have seen new faces take the reins over the past year. Joe Jacoby, NIC’s Director of Theatre for nearly 20 years, took the position of Division Chair of Communications in summer of 2022 and brought in Theatre Professor Erick Wolfe to replace him. Wolfe is a certified teacher with the British Academy of Dramatic Combat and the Academy of Performance Combat. He published the book “The Art of Knife Fighting for Stage and Screen,” and his work has been featured in film and television. Under Wolfe, the NIC Theatre Department has produced three productions including fall’s musical “Pride v. Prejudice.” NIC Theatre will perform its spring production, a series of student-directed shorts, at 7:30pm April 18, 19 and 20 and at 2:30pm April 21 at the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center at NIC’s Coeur d’Alene campus. NIC also hired four new directors for public music performances over the summer of 2023. Jacoby said working with these new directors will provide new and exciting challenges for NIC students. “New directors bring a fresh

energy and perspective to their group,” Jacoby said. “They have different skills that create new opportunities for students.” The college brought in Stan McDaniel to lead the Cardinal Chorale, Presley Dupuis for Cardinal Voices, Terry Jones for the NIC Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble, and Chris Waltrip for the Cardinal Pep Band. McDaniel served as the artistic director for Chorale Coeur d’Alene before joining NIC’s staff and has decades of experience teaching and directing choirs. Presley is a former NIC student who studied music at Eastern Washington University and served as music director for numerous musical theatre productions. Jones returned to NIC after several years in retirement. He served as director for the Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble and Pep Band for more than 30 years. Waltrip was a member of the Pep Band as a student and brings that experience with him leading the Pep Band this year. NIC Music is hosting its JazzNIC Festival concert at 7:30pm February 6, its Choral Kaleidoscope Concert at 7:30pm March 5, and more this spring through May. All NIC Fine Arts performances are free and open to the public. For a full schedule of performances at NIC, visit NIC.edu/events.

Photobooths: The Party Trend of the Decade Find out why photo booths have become the new non-negotiable and how Electric Photoland is bringing the celebrity craze to the PNW.
I
n an era where capturing moments has become as essential as the events themselves, photo booths have emerged as the ultimate party trend. This is especially true for weddings, where it’s important to have high-quality photos of loved ones and entertainment for guests. “This is entertainment and an alternative activity to hanging out at the bar. We recommend having our booths for both cocktail hour as well as the after-dinner dancing because it gives your guests a great icebreaker before dinner while capturing all the energy of the after party,” says Ashley Cone, owner of Electric Photoland (EP) who is at the forefront of this trend, transforming ordinary wedding receptions into hip, fun, celebrity-caliber events. The Rise of Photo Booths in Weddings Gone are the days when a simple photographer roaming the venue is enough. While wedding photographers are focused on the couple, modern weddings demand an interactive, fun and memorable element—a photobooth. Say goodbye to the tech-less, low-quality photo booth of the past complete with clown hair and oversized glasses, Electric Photoland provides a chic and trendy experience

from start to finish. From curated modern props like disco balls to unique backdrops created by artists, their photo booth provides a creative outlet for guests to express themselves while creating keepsakes that last a lifetime. “We want photos to look great and cohesive, so the props we bring are just that. No goofy glasses or cheap paper sayings on a stick. We want the photos to look amazing, so we are constantly refining our prop selection,” says Ashley. Why EP Stands Out EP isn't just another photo booth vendor. They're the only company in the Inland Northwest who offers completely custom photography experiences, powered by their technology partner and sister company Smilebooth. Their team of photographers, designers and tech wizards work to ensure that each photo booth experience is unique, engaging, and that guests look great while doing it. “We work with the top planners, vendors and venues in the area all the time, allowing us to make sure all the details of your event are thought of for the best experience possible,” Ashley states.
She goes on to say, “We offer the best glam booth in, well, anywhere! But we also have so many things that others don’t, such as stop motion videos and live online galleries.” When it comes to some of the unique aspects of what they offer, Ashley shares, “Our couples love that they can wake up together the morning after the wedding and browse through their photo booth gallery to see the smiles happening all night in the booth. They’re professional photos that are available immediately to guests and the couple, so it’s really different from regular wedding photography.” One of their most unique offerings is their Romr service, where a photographer roams your event and takes photos of your guests. Describing Romr, “No, this isn’t like a wedding or event photographer. Romr is like a photobooth on-the-go where the photos are immediately available to share with artwork, just like our booths—think really fun high-end party pics—and we can even print them at your event! It’s the perfect addition to a photobooth and is especially great after cake!”
Custom designed experiences are also on the rise in popularity. “This year we’re seeing a huge increase in the demand for color and bold graphic art,” says Ashley. “Being able to create a studioquality experience that’s repeatable, making your guests look and feel their best, is our goal,” she continues when discussing their backdrop and set design services. Imagine stepping into a customdesigned booth or set that reflects your aesthetic. These are not just backdrops; they're immersive art experiences that will set your wedding apart. “The small touches really matter to us. At the end of the night, we leave a photo box for the couple, including extra copies of the photos along with a magnetic frame with a photo of them on the top. We always get comments from our couples after the fact, especially because we don’t really advertise that we do this. It’s a nice touch and our ‘thank you’ for including us in their special day.” Electric Photoland isn't just about providing a service; they're about creating fun and excitement that won’t be forgotten. With their unique style, innovative technology and commitment to excellence, they have redefined what a photobooth can be. For couples planning their wedding, Electric Photoland offers more than just a photobooth; they offer the experience weddings need. 174 South Howard Street Spokane, Washington 509.240.9000 ElectricPhotoland.co Instagram: @electricphotoland.photobooth

It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of.
A
honeymoon is a cherished rite of passage for newlyweds; a time to revel in the joy of marriage and create unforgettable memories together. It's a journey that marks the beginning of a lifelong adventure. To ensure your honeymoon is nothing short of perfect, careful planning and selecting the ideal destination are paramount. It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of. Planning your honeymoon should ideally begin well before your wedding day. By giving yourself ample time, you can avoid the stress that often accompanies last-minute preparations. Determine your budget for the honeymoon. Knowing your financial limits will help you narrow down your options and plan accordingly. Decide when you want to go on your honeymoon. Some couples choose to depart immediately after the wedding, while others opt for a delayed honeymoon. Your choice will impact the destinations available to you. Make a list of what you both want from the honeymoon. Is it relaxation on a pristine beach, cultural exploration, adventure, or a combination of these? Prioritizing your desires will help you choose a destination that caters to your interests. Your honeymoon budget is a crucial aspect of planning, as it will dictate the scope of your trip. Allocate funds by dividing your budget into categories like transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and miscellaneous expenses. This will help you keep track of your spending. All-inclusive resorts and packages can be costeffective, as they often cover accommodations,

meals and activities in one upfront price. If you’re concerned about the cost, consider setting up a honeymoon fund where guests can contribute instead of traditional wedding gifts. Monitor currency exchange rates if you’re traveling internationally, keep an eye on currency exchange rates, and consider exchanging money in advance to get the best rates. Once you've outlined your preferences and constraints, it's time to seek inspiration for your dream honeymoon. Consult travel magazines and websites, such as TripAdvisor, Travel + Leisure, and Lonely Planet, which often feature honeymoon destinations, providing valuable insights and ideas. Reach out to friends and family who have been on memorable honeymoons. They can offer personal recommendations and tips based on their experiences. If you prefer a stressfree planning process, consider enlisting the help of a travel agent. They can suggest destinations, handle bookings, and even create personalized itineraries.

Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is a pivotal step in the planning process. Several factors should influence your decision. Consider your shared interests and hobbies. Are you both beach lovers, adventure seekers, history buffs, or foodies? Select a destination that aligns with your passions. Research the climate and seasons of potential destinations, and be sure to choose a time of year that suits your preferences, whether it's a tropical escape, a winter wonderland, or a springtime adventure. Keep an eye on any travel restrictions, visa requirements, or health and safety concerns related to your chosen destination, and stay informed about the latest updates and regulations. The best honeymoons are tailored to the couple's unique tastes and preferences. To customize your trip for a truly memorable experience, be sure to select your accommodations wisely. Whether you opt for a luxury resort, a charming boutique hotel or a cozy Airbnb, choose accommodations that reflect your style and comfort level.

You can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together.
Consider surprise activities or romantic gestures during your trip. This could be a couple’s spa day, a private sunset dinner on the beach or a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Plan a loose itinerary that includes must-see attractions and activities but also leaves room for spontaneity. The balance between structure and flexibility is key. Invest in a good camera or hire a professional photographer to capture the special moments of your honeymoon. These photos will be cherished mementos for years to come. As your honeymoon approaches, pay careful consideration when packing, especially if you're traveling to a destination with specific weather conditions or cultural norms. Check the weather and pack accordingly, including appropriate clothing for different activities and temperatures. Mix and match clothing items to create multiple outfits. Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas and travel insurance. Make copies of these documents in case of loss or theft. And don't forget to pack essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers and travel adapters. Try to pack efficiently to avoid excess baggage fees and the hassle of carrying heavy bags. A honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and planning it meticulously is key to creating lasting memories. With careful planning and a thoughtful approach, you can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together. So, start early, seek inspiration, and create a honeymoon that reflects your unique love story.

A
s the calendar turns a fresh page and the promise of a new year beckons, it’s the perfect time to embark on a journey of self-improvement. Year after year, many of us set ambitious resolutions, and at the top of the list, more often than not, is a commitment to better health. It’s time to make your health a priority, from setting realistic goals to adopting sustainable habits and seeking professional guidance. It’s a new year and time for a new you! The foundation of any successful health journey begins with setting clear and realistic goals. It’s easy to get carried away with grandiose resolutions like losing 50 pounds in a month or completely eliminating your favorite indulgence. However, such lofty ambitions can often lead to disappointment and frustration. Instead, start by identifying specific, attainable objectives that align with your long-term vision for a healthier you.
remember,
For instance, if your ultimate goal is to lead a more active lifestyle, consider setting a realistic target like walking for 30 minutes a day or hitting the gym three times a week. These smaller milestones will not only boost your confidence but also make it easier to track your progress.
PROGRES S ,
The key to lasting change lies in creating a sustainable routine. It’s tempting to make drastic changes in January, but consistency is what truly counts. Whether it’s adopting a new workout regimen, overhauling your diet, or dedicating time to meditation and selfcare, the key is to make these changes a part of your daily life. Start by incorporating one new habit at a time. This gradual approach makes it easier for your body and mind to adapt, increasing the chances of long-term success. Remember, the new year isn’t just about quick fixes; it’s about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

IT'S ABOUT
NOT
PERFECTION.
Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health, and the new year is an ideal time to reevaluate your eating habits. Instead of fad diets or extreme restrictions, focus on mindful eating. This means paying attention to what you eat, savoring each bite, and making conscious choices. Consider incorporating more whole foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Keep in mind that small changes can yield big results. Swap sugary drinks for water, reduce portion sizes, and limit processed foods. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. In the pursuit of physical health, it’s essential not to neglect your mental well-being. Stress, anxiety and burnout can take a toll on your overall health, so make mental wellness a priority this year. Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises. These practices can help you find balance in your life and cope with the challenges that may arise. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re struggling with your mental health. A therapist or counselor can provide valuable support and guidance as you navigate life’s ups and downs. Remember, taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. Exercise is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to physical activity, finding a fitness routine that suits your interests and goals is crucial. Start by exploring different activities until you discover something you genuinely enjoy.

Setting short-term fitness goals can also help keep you motivated. Consider signing up for a 5k run, a dance class or a weekly hiking group. Having an event or goal to work toward can make exercising more enjoyable and purposeful.
is a step closer to becoming the best version of yourself. Whether it’s fitting into those jeans you haven’t worn in years, achieving a personal best in the gym, or simply feeling more energetic, take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments.
Embarking on a health journey is often more successful when you have a support system in place. Share your goals with friends and family who can offer encouragement and accountability. Consider joining online communities or local groups with similar interests or objectives. Having others to share your challenges and successes with can make the journey more fulfilling.
Sometimes, achieving your health goals may require professional guidance. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, manage a chronic condition or develop a personalized fitness plan, consulting with health care professionals can provide valuable insights and support. Consider partnering with a registered dietitian, personal trainer or physical therapist who can tailor their expertise to your specific needs.
While adopting healthy habits is essential, don’t forget about the importance of regular health checkups. Visiting your health care provider for routine checkups and screenings can catch potential health issues early and ensure you’re on the right track. This proactive approach to your health can be a game-changer in maintaining your well-being. As you work toward your health and wellness goals, don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. Skin Rejuvenation: The Foundation of Bridal Beauty Healthy, glowing skin is the canvas upon which all other wedding day beauty enhancements are built. To achieve that coveted bridal glow, consider treatments such as facials, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Regular facials in the months leading up to your wedding can work wonders. They cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate your skin, leaving it looking refreshed and radiant. For a deeper skin renewal, chemical peels are an option, as they remove the outer layer of skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Opt for a gentle peel to avoid excessive downtime. If you’re seeking a quick rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, a noninvasive procedure that exfoliates the skin, can improve its texture and tone. Botox and Dermal Fillers: A Youthful Boost If you’re looking to smooth out wrinkles and add volume to certain areas of your face, Botox and dermal fillers can be your best friends. These nonsurgical treatments can help you achieve a youthful, refreshed appearance without the need for invasive surgery. Consider them for forehead lines and crow’s feet, where Botox injections can soften these lines, giving you a more youthful and relaxed look. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, can plump up your lips for that perfect pout. They can also enhance your cheekbones, giving your face a more defined, sculpted appearance. The results are natural looking and can last for several months, making them ideal for prewedding preparations. Body Sculpting: Achieve Your Dream Silhouette A wedding gown can accentuate your figure, but a little extra help in the form of body sculpting can ensure you feel confident and beautiful on your big day. Non-surgical fat reduction treatments like CoolSculpting and SculpSure can target stubborn areas of fat, helping you achieve your dream silhouette. These procedures are safe and effective, and they require minimal downtime. Whether you’re looking to slim down your waistline, thighs or arms, these treatments can be customized to address your specific concerns. It’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine the best approach for your needs. Teeth Whitening: Your Smile, Your Confidence Your smile is one of your most powerful assets on your wedding day. It’s the expression of your happiness and love, and it deserves to shine as brightly as possible. Consider professional teeth whitening treatments to ensure your smile is as radiant as can be. While over-the-counter whitening products are available, professional treatments performed by a dentist can deliver quicker and more dramatic results. Teeth whitening can lift years of stains and discoloration, leaving you with a dazzling smile that will light up your wedding photos. Start this process well in advance to ensure your teeth are at their brightest on the big day.

Hair Transformations: Locks that Dazzle Your hair is your crowning glory, and it deserves special attention as you prepare for your wedding. Schedule a consultation with a skilled hairstylist who can recommend treatments and styles that will complement your overall look. Consider hair extensions if you want to add length or volume for a more dramatic hairstyle. These extensions can be seamlessly integrated into your natural hair for a stunning effect. If you’re dealing with frizz or unruly hair, a professional keratin treatment can work wonders, leaving your locks smooth and manageable. Lastly, don’t forget to book a trial session for your wedding hairstyle to ensure it’s exactly what you envisioned. Nail Care: Polished to Perfection While your hands and nails might not be the first thing people notice, they’ll still be on display during the ring exchange and countless photos. Make sure your nails are polished to perfection with regular manicures in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Consider classic neutral shades that complement your overall bridal look. If you want a touch of glamor, opt for a subtle shimmer or glitter accent. Gel manicures can provide long-lasting results, ensuring your nails look flawless throughout the festivities.
Mind and Body Wellness: Inner Beauty Shines Through Beauty treatments aren’t just about external transformation; they should also focus on your well-being. In the hectic months leading up to your wedding, it’s crucial to take time for self-care and relaxation. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation and yoga into your routine to reduce stress and boost your inner radiance. Additionally, a healthy diet and regular exercise can enhance your physical and mental well-being, contributing to a more vibrant, confident you on your wedding day. As you embark on this exciting journey, remember that the ultimate goal of pre-wedding aesthetic treatments is to enhance your natural beauty and ensure you radiate confidence as you walk down the aisle. 80

Sustaining Your Healthy New Year’s
RESOLUTION PRACTICAL TIPS FOR REALISTIC AND LASTING SUCCESS
T
o achieve and sustain a healthy New Year’s resolution, it’s crucial to set realistic and specific goals. Start by identifying a clear objective that aligns with your values and priorities. Whether it’s improving your fitness, eating habits, or reducing stress, break down your goal into smaller, manageable steps. For example, if your resolution is to exercise more, commit to working out three times a week initially, gradually increasing the frequency. Consistency is key. Create a schedule and stick to it, but be flexible enough to adapt when life throws curveballs. Tracking your progress can also provide motivation. Keep a journal or use a tracking app to record your workouts, meals, or other relevant data. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, to stay motivated and reinforce positive behaviors. Surround yourself with support. Share your resolution with friends or family who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Consider seeking professional guidance if your goal requires specialized knowledge, such as a registered dietitian or personal trainer. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Setbacks are a natural part of any journey, so don’t be discouraged by occasional slipups. Learn from them and use them as opportunities for growth. With patience, determination and a realistic approach, you can achieve and maintain your healthy goals throughout the year.

The Holistic Hairstylist Organic hair salon provides a holistic approach to beauty
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
“I
always knew when I was young that I wanted to do hair,” Bryanna Baker reflects. “I was the hair-care, skin-care, makeup-obsessed girl before the days of YouTube. I idolized my hairstylist in San Diego and how something like hair could impact a person’s entire being.”
When it came time to look at colleges, Bryanna’s parents asked her where she wanted to go. Though she listed prestigious hair schools, her parents dreamed of a different path for her. Bryanna would attend the University

of North Dakota. She attended the university for two years but dropped out to go to hair school at Toni & Guys Hairdressing Academy. After completion of hair school, she knew she needed to finish what she started and enrolled at North Dakota State University, where she graduated with her degree in marketing, while doing hair when not at school. Bryanna introduced The Holistic Hairstylist to the community in May of 2020, later incorporating her own holistic practices into her business and
switching to organic-based color and hair-care products that November. “And I would never look back,” she smiles. A hairstylist for nearly a decade, it was in 2018, after a series of events, Bryanna knew she needed to reevaluate her lifestylist and resort to a more holistic and natural approach to her own life. “I started to dive deep into how I can change what I use in my work. There has to be a way to do it better, do it cleaner. I was finally introduced to OWAY (Organic Way) in 2019 and made the switch to organic behind the chair in 2020.” It was after getting extremely sick with COVID in 2021, when she was in the ICU for five days and the hospital for a week, that Bryanna started to experience Telogen Effluvium, which led her to shave her head and start her research into hair loss and regrowing hair, and study Trichology. Currently North Idaho’s only Certified Hair Loss Practitioner, dually certified through USTI (United States Trichology Institute) and AMCA (American Medical Certification Association), and soon to be the region’s first Trichologist (she will be fully certified in April of this year), Bryanna is blessed to be able to help people get to the root cause of their hair and scalp issues, and tailor treatment specifically to them. “The main passion of my work is my hair-loss services, helping people regrow their hair, and my personalized scalp treatments (think of facial for your scalp). A healthy scalp equals beautiful, healthy hair,” she smiles. “I also provide a low-toxin hair environment. No hair color can be completely organic, but using high-quality ingredients and organic ingredients does make a huge difference.” In addition, Bryanna offers haircuts and extensions. For those brides looking to achieve their hair goals going into their big day through scalp treatments and color, Bryanna is your girl. What Bryanna has found most rewarding about her career is “getting to truly touch people, either through my scalp services, where I am guiding people on their hair growth and seeing it literally change their confidence, or nailing someone’s dream color. The moment of showing someone their own beauty and seeing the glow it gives them, that is exactly why I do what I do.” Bryanna is grateful for living and working in a community filled with kind, caring people who are committed to supporting local, living healthy, and taking care of one another. And she is blessed by her current clients in helping her live her dream. “Their loyalty and trust in me is what keeps me in business,” she affirms. “In addition, as I am education oriented, constantly wanting to know more, be more, do more, that drive keeps me at the top of my game and comes back to my business.” When not taking care of her clients, Bryanna is devoted to her two beautiful dogs, Sophia and Kylo. She loves the outdoors and hiking, enjoying a coffee at Coeur d’Alene Coffee Co., traveling, or continuing her education in her field. The Holistic Hairstylist is open 8am to 4pm Tuesday through Friday, and weekends by appointment. Bryanna invites you to schedule your appointment today.

The Eritage Resort is nestled in a bucolic 300-acre setting of vineyards and wheat fields surrounding the lovely Lake Sienna. It is the epitome of luxury with unparalleled service and opulent amenities. For the ultimate in privacy and romance, book a bungalow suite, where the floor-to-ceiling windows open up to sweeping views of the lake and vineyards. L’Occitane bath products add a spa experience to your daily rituals. At least one of your meals during your visit should be at the on-
site restaurant, where Executive Chef Arturo Tello Jr. utilizes open-fire cooking techniques with locally sourced ingredients. Inspired by his mother’s cooking and his Latin heritage, he crafts some pretty incredible meals. Plan to spend some time at the resort to enjoy the outdoor saltwater swimming pool, or take out one of the cruisers or mountain bikes to explore the vineyards and resort property. An early morning paddle board as the sun rises is a perfect way to start the day. Eritage wines are available exclusively on-site, so add a tasting to your itinerary. For special occasions, add a romance package, which includes a dozen red roses, a bottle of sparkling wine and artisan chocolate arranged in your room prior to arrival.

Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. There is such a variety of places to dine in the Walla Walla area. Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. Brasserie Four is a classic French-style country restaurant with simple food that is so satisfying. Make sure to try the PommesFrites with mayo. It is hard to believe French fries can taste so good. The Vichyssoise, a potato leek soup, is a showstopper—especially when sopped up with a slice of baguette and paired with a good glass of white wine. Each day there are daily specials that highlight fresh local ingredients such as the recent heirloom tomato salad. The Waterbrook Winery and Tasting Room is outside of town and makes a good spot for lunch and touring the other wineries in the area. Chef Sarah Perry works her magic incorporating farm fresh produce from the on-site garden and local farms into her cuisine. Try the Chef ’s Board and other shareables with a flight of wine that allows guests to experience different flavor profiles. The menu also offers a flight of house-made sauces, which is a nice addition to any of the sides.
Walkable downtown Walla Walla has plenty of shops and boutiques to explore. Don’t miss the Showroom at Colville, which is like stepping into foodie heaven. Marguerite offers a variety of gourmet foods from France and Italy. Cookbooks and home décor round out the offerings. Stop for a tasting at the Bergevin Lane Vineyards tasting room to try any of the Passion Project Collection, a limited case production of small-batch wines. These big, bold reds have a cult following. Insider Tip: In the alley behind the showroom is a speakeasy culinary shop. Look for the door, as there is no sign for Foodscape, which offers fresh local produce, seafood, cheese, charcuterie and gourmet groceries. For those seeking outdoor adventure, head out to Ski Bluewood, a popular ski and snowboard resort about an hour from Walla Walla that has undergone recent updates. Waitsburg and Dayton are two darling small towns worth a visit. Take a stroll through Pioneer Park, the oldest in town established in 1902. Walking paths will take you past large shade trees and beautiful ponds, in-season flower gardens and an outdoor aviary. Nothing says romance like sparkling wine. Winemaker George-Anne Robertson leads the sparkling wine program at the Yellowhawk Resort and Sparkling House. This 84-acre hilltop retreat is just gorgeous. Keep an eye out for the namesake hawks as you drive onto this pastoral property. For a fun activity, book an “Experience the Art of Sparkling Wine Disgorgement and Dosage.” This hands-on experience will have guests learn about creating sparkling wine and then have the opportunity to disgorge their own bottle of sparkling wine. Super fun activity!

Simple and Healthy Baked Eggs in Avocado Ingredients: • 2 ripe avocados • 4 large eggs • Salt and pepper, to taste • Optional toppings (such as chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes or grated cheese)
Method: • Preheat your oven to 375°F. • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. If necessary, you can slice a small piece off the bottom of each avocado half to make them stable and prevent them from tipping over in the oven. Use a spoon to scoop out some of the flesh from each avocado half, leaving enough room for an egg to fit comfortably. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over each avocado half. You can also add any other seasonings you like, such as paprika or garlic powder. • Carefully crack one egg into each avocado half, placing it in the hollow you created. If you're concerned about the egg whites spilling over, you can crack the eggs into a small bowl first and then pour them into the avocado halves. Season the eggs with a bit more salt and pepper, to taste. • Place the filled avocado halves on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking. Keep in mind that the yolks will continue to cook slightly after you remove them from the oven, so take them out just before your preferred level of doneness. Let cool for a minute or two before serving. • Sprinkle your choice of toppings over the baked eggs and avocados. Chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes and grated cheese are popular options. • These baked eggs in avocado make for a delicious and nutritious breakfast or brunch. You can customize them with various toppings and seasonings to suit your taste preferences. january/february 2024 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

Benefiting Hospice of North Idaho and its mission since 1985 by JILLIAN CHANDLER
t’s that time of year again where the community is invited to come out and show their support to Hospice of North Idaho!
The 39th annual Hospice Winter Wine Taste & Auction returns to the Coeur d’Alene Resort on Saturday, February 3. The festive evening kicks off at 5pm, as guests adorned in their beautiful and handsome formal attire make their arrival, breeze through the streamlined check-in process, and are immediately greeted by decadent décor that reflects this year’s theme: Fly Me to the Moon. “Historically, we have done different themes for over 38 years. For a while, we were choosing our theme based on countries and culture, but this year, we thought it would be fun to do an ‘old school’ Las Vegas theme with inspiration from the ‘Rat Pack’ icons like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.,” shares Megan Ryan, community relations specialist for Hospice of North Idaho. “It brings us back to a vintage era of music, entertainment and lights that have existed for many decades. We like to think that our service to our community has similarly had a positive impact for many decades since our inception 42 years ago.” Once checked in, guests will have the opportunity to mingle and taste specialty wines and food choices. There will be exciting games to play, a silent auction, new live auction packages available, and a few of their popular offerings. An after-party at Whispers Lounge will cap off the evening. (Special room reservations are available through The Coeur d’Alene Resort; call 855.703.4648 to reserve your room.)

Megan shares that approximately 325 tickets will be sold for the event, plus 500 raffle tickets with the chance to win a luxury, customizable Five-Star resort experience at Wynn Las Vegas. The package includes flights, accommodations and more, and is valued at $4,995. You do not need to be present to win. All funds raised during the evening go to furthering Hospice of North Idaho’s mission of providing expert care and compassion for all those experiencing their end-of-life journey in Kootenai, Shoshone, South Bonner and Benewah counties—regardless of their financial resources. Last year’s event brought in more than $265,000! This year they are hoping to raise $275,000. “I love the laughter, the music, the games, the food and drink,” says Eric Ladwig, executive director and Wine Taste Event chair. “Most importantly, I love that so many people come to carry us forward in our mission, knowing that every bit of support we receive goes directly to us caring for so many needful people. I feel honored to be part of Hospice of North Idaho, and I celebrate any opportunity our community members take to link arms with our team to bring peace and beauty to those who need us as they near the end of life’s journey.” To purchase your ticket to attend, priced $125 per person, visit HospiceofNorthIdaho.org/annual-wine-taste.
