High Five Grant continues to be leveraged

I

t was a joyous day in 2017 when the city of Bonners Ferry found out it would be a recipient of a $250,000 grant to help improve the health of youth in and around the community. According to the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health, one in three Idaho children are categorized as overweight or obese. This can lead to many health problems down the road like increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Every few years the organization awards a Community Transformation Grant that helps communities create projects and opportunities that better the health of young people, get them access to healthy foods and increased opportunities for physical activity.

From the initial $250,000, city administrators and a steering committee made up of Boundary County Parks and Recreation, the school district, library, hospital, University of Idaho and extension office, and local citizens have initiated 13 projects directed toward the goals of a healthier youth population. One of the most recent and highly anticipated projects is a splash pad for kids of all ages to enjoy during the warm summer months.

“Council did authorize the use of High Five Grant dollars toward the capital investment of the splash pad,” said City Administrator Lisa Ailport. “We believe the cost will be $55,777 and the High Five Grant would cover all of that.”

The roughly 500-square-foot splash pad will be built adjacent to the city pool, which is also upgraded with use of the High Five Grant.

There will be several water jets coming from the ground up as well as taller features that will dump water from above. The splash pad is especially beneficial for young children who haven’t started swimming lessons as it gets them accustomed to being around water and not panicking when they are splashed in the face. It will be located to the south of the pool next to the covered viewing area so parents and kids

can have a break in the shade as well. Construction should begin this year with the pad being fully operational by summer of 2020.

Despite the High Five Grant covering all the costs of the construction, Ailport and the committee have worked hard to not only utilize every dollar in the grant but to leverage projects into additional funding from community members, companies and additional grants.

“We did apply for an Innovia grant that would cover some of the costs with that as well, which is about $10,000,” she said.

If the grant goes through, the money will be put toward the splash pad project and $10,000 of the High Five Grant will go back into the original fund—something that’s been common practice since the very first projects.

“If we get the Innovia grant, we will have leveraged about $202,000,” said Ailport.

Taking a $250,000 grant and turning it into more than $450,000 worth of projects shows a real dedication from those willing to help out once a project is announced.

At Bonners Ferry High School, the gym was in desperate need of new cardio equipment. The High Five Grant was able to provide more than $23,000 in funding for this equipment and others, including the local Rotary, chipped in an additional $2,000 to finish off the project.

The city pool in which the concrete was poured in the 1930s was also in need of a serious upgrade. The grant allotted $60,000 for improvements, but the project ended up leveraging $150,000 to help create a beautiful new space. If a project is already partially funded it’s much more likely to receive full funding from other sources.

Some of the additional projects you will notice around town thanks to the High Five Grant are the cross-country trails behind the high school, new bike racks around town and the little free gardens. The BOCO Backpack program received significant funding from the grant. This program serves 160 students each week by providing them with nutritious foods when their families might not otherwise be able to afford them. A new

year-round skating rink is also another place where kids can go for a fun place to exercise and interact.

Time is winding down on utilizing the remainder of the grant money. “If we don’t use it, we lose it,” said Ailmont. There is currently about $25,000 remaining in pool ($35,000 if Innovia grant goes through).

Several projects are under consideration with the goal of maximizing and leveraging all of the remaining dollars.

For those who have worked closely on the project the last three years, they are hoping that this is just the start of creating a healthier and more active community in Bonners Ferry. Ailport hopes that more projects geared toward both mental and physical health will spring from what the High Five Grant might have already started.

Regardless, the community is now enjoying the benefits from a grant that nearly doubled in value thanks to the hard work and generosity of so many.

et’s talk countertops. One of my favorite upgrades in any kitchen or bathroom often starts with countertops.

Nowadays there are so many options out there you can choose almost any look, but all countertop surfaces are not created the same!

Stone countertops are very popular and often go with the rustic interiors we favor here in North Idaho. Stone ranges in all kinds of looks and colors, from super-simple Absolute Black, to classic Carrara Marble, to swirly-twirly Typhoon Bordeaux. As well, the surface of stone can be polished, honed or even leathered, creating options within options, which can be even more daunting when it comes to the selection process. However, I will say this: Often when it comes to natural stone, and granite in particular, my clients experience something akin to love at first sight—they’ll see a slab and just know that that is the rock they want in their house.

Stone is quarried all over the world, but there are several talented fabricators and sales centers right here in the Sandpoint area.

Natural stone is dug out of the quarry, then split into manageable slabs, then sent to local distributors (ours are mainly in Spokane) and then purchased by the fabricator, who cuts it to size, adds details like edging and specific cuts, and then it is installed. It is a tedious process that is all the more difficult because the fabricators are working with massive slabs that weigh thousands of pounds and can break easier than you might think!

Quartz is fabricated roughly the same way as granite, but it is a man-made substance, not pure stone like granite. It’s called quartz because the manufacturers take quartz rough material, grind it down finely, and mix it with binders and pigments to get an end product. It can look wild with lots of variation, or subtle with little to no variation, and can go with a variety of interiors.

Because it is man-made, the material is only as good as its manufacturing process, and different manufacturers have different processes. A good fabricator or sales center can help you determine the right quartz brand for you, as they often have their favorites that they have good working history with.

Corian edges look fantastic, and some places can do seamless rolled edges as well.

There is also tried-and-true laminate, which has come a long way since the glossy blue marbled look of 1985! The new laminate materials from Wilsonart and Formica are gorgeous—some of them look very close to natural stone, and others looking sleek and ready for an uber-modern interior. Edging has also improved. Gone are the days when wood or laminate tape was the only option for countertop edging. Integrated

First of all, by contributing to your 401(k), you can get into the habit of regular investing.

And since you invest in your 401(k) through regular payroll deductions, it’s an easy way to invest.

Furthermore, your 401(k) or similar plan is an excellent retirement-savings vehicle. You generally contribute pre-tax dollars to your 401(k), so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Your employer might also offer a Roth 401(k), which is funded with after-tax dollars; although you can’t deduct your contributions, your earnings can grow tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions. And with either a traditional or Roth 401(k), you generally have a wide array of investment options.

But perhaps the main reason to start investing right away in your 401(k) is that, at this point of your life, you have access to the greatest and most irreplaceable asset of all—time. The more time you have on your side, the greater the growth potential for your investments.

And by starting to invest early in your plan, you can put in smaller amounts without having to play catch-up later.

As your career progresses and your salary goes up, you can steadily increase the amount you put into your 401(k) or other retirement plan.

SLINGIN’ DIRT RACES RETURN TO FAIRGROUNDS

D

irt will be flying and riders will be soaring at the Boundary County Fairgrounds as 9B Arenacross returns for a second go. The race is put on by a team of dedicated local riders who are committed to encouraging more people to get involved in dirt bike racing while at the same time providing an event that’s exciting, safe and family friendly.

The dirt track with all its tight turns, bumps and jumps will be ready to test an expected 80 to 100 riders on Saturday, June 29. Races begin at 6pm and the pros are competing for a purse of $9,000. Arenacross will feature some of the best regional riders but also give people of varying skill level a chance to put their own stamp on the course. There will be roughly 20 classes of racing throughout the night ranging from pros on 450cc bikes to youth, women, mini-bikes and beginners. There is even a ‘Run What Ya Brung’ class where pretty much anything with two wheels is allowed on the course—bmx bikes, scooters, mopeds or even Harleys.

This is a ‘no jump’ event so competitors will roll over each obstacle for safety.

If you would like to participate, registration is open at 9BArenacross. com. Prices vary by class and there is a $10 discount if you want to race in multiple events.

For fans, gates open at 5pm. Tickets are $15 for ages 13 and older, $10 for ages 4 to 12. Pit passes are available for $10. You can also see many of the bikes that will be racing ahead of time during the Moto Show which runs from 9am to 5pm at the fairgrounds. Many other cool rides, customs and vintage motorcycles will be on display as well. Concessions will be available and, please note, this is an alcohol-free event.

Last year there were 32 girls on the high school volleyball team, including the “C” team, junior varsity and varsity.

n June 15, get ready to have a blast! The Color Blast Run, hosted by the Bonners Ferry High School girls’ volleyball team, will start at 10am. For the fourth year in a row, this fundraiser will welcome people of all ages to participate in the Color Blast 5k Run/Walk.

“I would love to see this number or higher for next year. This year was a rebuilding year for us and, as for this coming season, I am excited to see the girls’ development and improvements as I have four players playing club volleyball,” said Maas, who adds that she has a total of seven players returning next year to her team.

The event will begin at the Boundary County Fairgrounds with the run/walk taking participants along the dyke road toward the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. Runners will then turn around at the half-way mark, THANK YOU TO THE BUSINESSES ending back at the starting line. junior at Bonners Ferry High School, Abby Gorton has already made her mark in the history books of Bonners Ferry athletics. In cross country, Abby was the district champion and placed fifth at state while also breaking the 5k school record, and the spring track season has been remarkable!

Abby admits to having a great deal of stress before a race, something which is understandable considering her outstanding performances and the desire to do her best.

When asked what her most memorable moment has been to date when it comes to sports, Abby said it was at the end of the 3,200 her sophomore year. “It was my first time medaling at track state, and I set a personal record,” said Abby.

“I still struggle with this, but I have improved a lot by not overthinking it and doing what I know how to do—just run,” said Abby.

In track, Abby took third place in the 3,200 at state her sophomore year. Recently at districts, which took place at Timberlake, Abby won the 1,600 with a time of 5:31.53 and won the 3,200 in a time of 12:17.17. These remarkable performances had her seeded first in both races for the 3A state championships where Abby had an amazing showing, winning gold in both the 1,600 and 3,200 and breaking school records in both categories.

But it’s not just in athletics where Abby succeeds. She is on the honor roll with a GPA greater than 4.0, takes several courses through North Idaho College and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Abby shares that while she is not sure as to where she will attend school, she does plan to

“I enjoy having the opportunity to run with my closest friends,” said Abby. “I also really enjoy getting to push myself to see what I am able to accomplish.”

Abby shares that an important lesson she has learned from sports is the importance of having a positive mindset.

“What you tell yourself has a strong impact on your body and what you are able to achieve. If you believe you can’t do something, you won’t be able to. If you tell yourself you can and that you want to, you are much more likely to be successful and achieve what you want to achieve.”

he egomaniacal ambition of one man, Adolph Hitler, summoned the Allied forces to war in World War II. If they did not stop him, he would not be stopped. Every soldier was an Atlas, bearing the fate of the world on his shoulders.

Before the Battle of Normandy began on D-Day, June 6, 1944, soldiers of America, Britain and Canada said goodbyes that no amount of reassurances could keep from being final. Wives wept in the final embrace of parting. Mothers looked into the eyes of their sons, releasing them to battle as a sacrifice of their own. Children watched fathers walk away.

Many things are remarkable about the battle hailed as “the beginning of the end of WWII,”

but few are as unexpected as historical photographs of the calm faces of men about to die for their country. Packed into barges carrying them to deadly beaches, every face is introspective yet calm. There are no tears. There is no rage. Among paratroopers lined up in air carriers about to parachute to the field of battle, every face is quiet. There is no visible fear. They are not talking, each in solemn confrontation of his own mortality. How in the world could they do it—jump to earth, jump out of boats and slog through waves on the way to death—with calm faces! If their hearts were thundering to burst out of their chests, they did not show it.

On June 6, 1944, the D-Day invasion began in the pre-dawn hours with thousands of paratroopers landing inland to cut off exits and destroy bridges to slow Nazi reinforcements. The military term “D-Day” is a placeholder for the launch date of a mission so the actual date isn’t discovered by spies. The name of the overall Normandy invasion was Operation Overlord, and D-Day’s official name was Operation Neptune.

and water obstacles. The shoreline was treacherous with wooden stakes, metal tripods and barbed wire; an estimated 4 million landmines were planted along the beaches. On the bluffs above were heavily fortified Nazi artillery positions.

As wave after wave of 15,000 Allied infantrymen disembarked into the freezing waters and stormed ashore, they were mowed down by staccato machine gun fire from above as the death-trapped sands exploded and attacked beneath their feet. They did not stop. The beaches became a bloody carpet of human bodies, and men had to scramble over their fallen comrades to advance. They did not turn back.

Canadian soldiers who landed at a heavily defended strip of shoreline at Juno Beach were gunned down en masse by Nazi artillery with an initial casualty rate of 50 percent. They did not give up. They pushed beyond the beachfront and pursued the Germans inland.

All five Normandy beaches were secured by Allied forces by June 11.

German casualties on D-Day have been estimated at 4,000 to 9,000 men. Allied casualties were at least 10,000. Total Allied deaths on D-Day numbered 4,413 fallen heroes.

The victorious troops installed two massive, temporary harbors that had taken six months to construct back in England. The Allies then unloaded 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles and 4 million tons of supplies at these temporary harbors over the remaining course of the war. The massive influx of troops and equipment marked a decisive turning point in the war. Less than a year later, on May 7, 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender.

The veterans who survived D-Day rarely speak of it except to express gratitude for victory. A silence of respect seals those days. They are too horrific to describe, too wounding to remember. Veterans accept thanks for their service and sacrifice with a simple solemnity. They share the gratitude of their nation to the bold comrades who did not come back, who—in rescuing the world—had to leave it in order to save it. The fallen

made the ultimate sacrifice—they gave their lives for our lives. It is that simple.

ospice is not a place,” says Jennifer Van Etten, community outreach coordinator for Auburn Crest Hospice. “It’s a philosophy of care that enhances life as it nears the end for the patients and their families and friends. pon graduating high school we all face the same challenging question: What do I want to do with my life? One path is to continue your education at a traditional four-year university, community college or technical school. Many enter the workforce in a wide range of jobs or family owned business.

Still others feel the need to serve their country through military service. And a few simply set out to explore the world while they aren’t tied down to a career, marriage or family. In 1961, another opportunity arose for young people across the country.

Then presidential candidate John F. Kennedy wrapped up a day of campaigning and arrived on the campus of the University of Michigan at 2am. Though the press corps had all retired, 10,000 students were still assembled, waiting to hear from the candidate. From the steps of the Student Union Building, Kennedy issued a challenge to the assembled crowd; a challenge that would bring about a new path of service to the country once he was elected to the White House.

Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your lives traveling around the world? On your willingness to do that, not merely to serve one year or two years in the service, but on your willingness to contribute part of your life to this country, I think will depend (upon) the answer to the question of whether a free society can compete. I think it can! And I think Americans are willing to contribute. But the effort must be far greater than we have ever made in the past.”

In March of 1961, President Kennedy created the Peace Corps, and in the 58 years since, nearly a quarter of a million Americans have answered his challenge to serve their country by utilizing their skills in the developing world.

Boundary County resident Wayne Nishek was among the first batch to answer the president’s challenge. Wayne grew up on a farm but always wanted to see the world. He studied abroad in England in the late 1950s and was able to experience a different culture for the first time.

He also recalls seeing the devastation from World War II still present in the likes of crumbled buildings and deep holes in the landscape where bombs had dropped.

“I wouldn’t say I was draft dodging, but I didn’t want to go to Vietnam

like my three older brothers, but I still wanted to see the world and help people,” recalled Wayne, now 78.

Wayne was at a farming conference in Denver when he first heard of the Peace Corps, and it didn’t take much selling for him to sign up.

Wayne and his girlfriend signed up to be part of the first team of Peace Corp volunteers to enter southern Bolivia, but first a whole lot of life needed to happen.

“We decided to get married before we left, so we scrambled and made it happen. We took a three-day honeymoon and then got on a plane to Miami to begin our training,” said Wayne.

Their stay in Miami was short lived however, as the night they arrived coincided with the Bay of Pigs Invasion that set the region under immense tension. The newlyweds were instead flown to Vermont for months of training that included the Spanish language and militarystyle survival courses.

“I remember them taking us out in a raft with our hands tied behind our back and pushing us out into the water,” said Wayne.

Of the original 60 or so signups only about half made it through the training. After several months of training they were on their way to Bolivia. Once on the ground, Wayne used his farming background to help with a local rice co-op which was dealing with constantly brokendown machinery. He showed the Bolivians the mechanics of how an engine works on a combine and what was needed to maintain it. He

Once that project was running smoothly, he moved into helping out with local 4-H style programs where he helped the locals breed healthier animals such as hogs and chickens.

What seemed like a few simple skills he had learned through his own upbringing ultimately changed and improved the lives of countless people in the region.

“People say they don’t have anything to offer, but there are a lot of skills that translate in developing countries. A lot need help with simple mechanics, reading, bookkeeping and just developing plans,” he said.

Wayne’s two years in Bolivia would evolve into a lifetime of service. He would spend 19 years in Africa building homes and schools in far remote villages and teaching locals how to create and patch clay stoves. He would eventually run the first Peace Corps training camp in India, where he would send new recruits out to a remote village for a week to teach them how to get by with very little.

“They learned a lot about culture, surviving with almost nothing, and came back wanting to focus on learning the language,” he said.

Of all the impact he made, it was one of the smallest things that might have gone the furthest. Back in Bolivia, the humidity and heat always attracted flies, and no one was using a screen door. Wayne showed them how to build a screen and, using old rubber bike tires, create a swinging screen door for a few of the homes.

When he visited 15 years later it was still the talk of the town.

As he looks back at his experience, he shares that he was only just trying to make some sort of contribution to the world but instead did so much to impact a community and make it a healthier place to live. It is something of which he is proud.

Like Wayne, Pastor Andrew Hinderlie had studied abroad with his experience coming in Thailand. After graduating college in the Midwest in 1978, he thought he might go back to Asia and possibly teach—until he met up with an on-campus Peace Corps recruiter.

“After a lot of thought, I decided to do it,” said Andrew.

With not a lot of building or farming background, the Peace Corps decided Andrew’s best fit was in planning and logistics. He went through language training and was taught survival skills as well (now a less intense version than Wayne’s). He was sent to the Togolese Republic, also known as Togo, in Africa to help oversee logistics and financial planning projects for the local government.

“We would supply the expertise for the local masons, carpenters, architects, planners and problem solve with design teams,” he said.

Andrew’s team built schools, outbuildings and large dry-storage buildings for grains. A self-described “Minnesota nice guy,” Andrew admits to being hesitant in some of his early decision-making as to not offend locals but learned how to be a confident leader by running many projects.

“We always worked as a team, and I didn’t always want to push hard, but I learned I often had to push people to really get stuff done.”

a lot of times the locals would ask why they didn’t have the same freedoms and democracy in their country.

Andrew would facilitate many projects across Africa, but some of his most impactful messaging came through simple conversations. While he was learning about different cultures, Andrew was also sharing with locals the ideals of American Democracy.

“This would spur discussions about our system, and a lot of times the locals would ask why they didn’t have the same freedoms and democracy in their country,” he recalled.

Andrew’s commitment to his faith is evidenced from his position of pastor at a Lutheran church, but he was never afraid to explore his beliefs and how they differ from those in other nations and religions. He went to all the different churches he could find and learned from practicing Buddhists as well.

“I don’t see God as just in my denomination but in all places. I see God as a God that loves this world.”

Wayne recalls spending time in Muslim villages as well and being treated with the same respects as the locals.

“I would leave my shoes and all of my stuff on the beach when I went for a walk. When I came back an hour later my stuff was always still there. Where in America do you think that could happen?” asked Wayne.

While both men specialized in different areas, traveled to different lands and had different experiences, both Wayne and Andrew came back with a similar understanding of the world and themselves.

Wayne still speaks monthly with a few of the folks from his original volunteer group; relationships that have stood more than 50 years. When Andrew returned home he quickly got involved with the international community, hosting students and having welcome parties in his parents’ home.

“Once you come into my home, you are always welcome,” he said.

very similar to the Americans he grew up with.

Wayne recalls dining with families as well and the common theme of respect and understanding that can be shared over a meal.

“Almost every country has unique things in their culture, but if you treat human beings like human beings, eat food and share drink with each other, you’ll be accepted into a family.”

Spreading the democratic ideals of the United States has inspired people in developing countries to fight for additional freedoms and take political office. Many come here to work on college degrees or to become

Both men share their experiences of keeping an open mind toward other cultures with those they encounter throughout the day. In a time of increasing division, both come back to sharing a meal and having a conversation.

“People don’t learn how to speak face to face or to talk one on one anymore, which I hope will change,” said Wayne.

“We are so afraid of those who are different, and I don’t think that’s who we are as Americans,” said Andrew. “I think we’ll grow through this because we are a country that celebrates diversity and (know) that we don’t all have to be the same to lead a wonderful life.”

PHOTOSENSITIVITY What it is and how you can protect your skin from it

ummer is in full swing, and we are all rushing outside to soak up the warmer temperatures and the sunshine! After being covered up all winter it feels great to shed the layers and warm up. But don’t run out into the sunshine without the proper consideration for your skin. Not only will you be more susceptible to burn, certain products in your skin-care routine or medications you take can cause photosensitivity. Let’s talk about what photosensitivity is, what causes it and how to avoid it.

What is photosensitivity?

Photosensitivity is an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources. UV rays come directly from the sun but also bounce off water, snow and even sand, causing indirect exposure from the elements around you. Symptoms of photosensitivity vary from mild to severe. The most common symptom is a skin rash or sunburn. In some cases, a sunburn can be so severe that blistering or peeling can occur. Reactions vary, depending on the length of exposure and what is in and on your body.

What causes photosensitivity?

There are many causes of photosensitivity. Medications such as certain antibiotics, diuretics, chemotherapy drugs and oral acne medications can cause photosensitivity. If you are given a prescription with a warning of photosensitivity or “to limit your sun exposure,” take it seriously. This means the medication has been known to cause a reaction to UV rays. Medical conditions such as Lupus can cause photosensitivity as well.

It is also important to pay attention to ingredients in your skin-care products, which may cause sensitivity to the sun. Tretinoin (or retinoids like Retin-A), alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid), beta hydroxy acids

(salicylic acid) and benzoyl peroxide, cause a thinning of the outermost layers of the skin and increase sensitivity. While these ingredients are amazing for treating acne and signs of aging (fine lines and dark spots), they cause more damage with prolonged sun exposure.

How do we avoid photosensitivity?

The best way to prevent symptoms of photosensitivity is to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun. We know it’s the time of year when you want to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin! But keep in mind the risks and make SPF your new best friend. This is not just for those who are photosensitive— everyone should wear sunscreen daily. Also, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and long sleeved lightweight clothing to keep you

out of direct sun exposure. UV rays are always more intense at higher altitudes, so if you’re heading to the mountains keep this in mind.

If you are a sun lover and know you will be exposed regularly, you may consider putting those retinol products on the back shelf for the summer. After all, getting a sunburn is counterproductive for anti-aging. The fall is a great time to add these products back in to your routine when the sun is much less intense.

Remember, don’t discontinue medications without talking to your health-care provider first.

We want you to enjoy your summer. Go boating, hang out on the beach, take a bike ride or a long hike. Just remember to protect your skin—all your skin—with daily SPF application and protective clothing.

When planning your trip, be sure to talk about your plans in advance and, if your children are at the appropriate age, allow them to be involved in the planning process. Offer them options of various activities that you can all participate in and allow plenty of time for each stage of the trip so you are not rushed. Also, allow for downtime. While traveling can be exhilarating, it can be exhausting too. Try to keep kids’ bedtimes close to that which they have at home. By doing so, you will have a happier travel companion! You may also want to consider renting a home through Airbnb or VRBO as opposed to a hotel room so parents can have some time of their own after the kids go to bed.

Planning ahead for delays can help alleviate stress. If you are traveling by plane, be sure to pack extra snacks and activities for the kids to do in the event of a flight delay. Do you typically limit screen time while at home? This is the time to maybe ease up on those restrictions and allow the kids to have some added fun while keeping them occupied at the same time! For older kids, one thing that can help keep them busy is keeping a journal, either handwritten or on their laptop. It’s a way they can document their trip, and it can also provide them with something to do in the event delays take place.

Don’t over pack! Kids (and adults) tend to want to bring all they can on a trip. After all, it’s nice to have choices, right? Allow the kids to have some input into what goes into their suitcase, but remind them that whether it’s a backpack or a small roller bag, they will have to help transport all they bring. By all means, though, if they have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket that gives them comfort, that is a “must” when it comes to packing.

How to plan a summer vacation on a tight budget

ummer is upon us, and it is time for that annual rite of passage—the summer vacation. It can be an expensive extravaganza or you can choose a more frugal option. Some of my best memories of family vacations are the ones that were the least expensive. With a little planning and creativity you can have a fun vacation that won’t break the bank.

Staycation. The staycation is the ultimate budget vacation, but you have to make some rules first to ensure it is a vacation. The rules are: Decide the length of the vacation, determine a budget, stick to it and lastly no work.

This last one is tough and must be agreed upon by all parties. No family yard work, no house projects and no working from home.

Plan activities for each day and visit local attractions. Maybe invest in a family membership that you can use all summer at a local aquarium, museum or pool. Turn your backyard into a summer playground with fun yard toys. It’s low tech, but running through a sprinkler never gets old. Rent an outdoor movie screen for summer movies under the stars and purchase movie candy from the dollar store. The key is to spend time together as a family and just have some fun.

At the end of the week, invest in a night at a waterpark hotel. For a family of four the cost is about the same as a day at a waterpark. Many hotels will let you check in early to use the waterpark and stay later the next day after

Summer Road Trip. Road trips are one of the more economical ways to travel with a family versus the high cost of plane tickets to a destination.

The first rule of thumb is to plan how far you want to drive. For a weekend trip plan no further than a three- to four-hour drive. If you are planning for a weeklong trip, venture out about a seven- to eight-hour drive. Consider more scenic routes and research fun stops along the way.

Next decide if you want to go to multiple destinations or make a base at one location. The more relaxing route is to pick a location and then venture out from there.

When traveling with family, a cabin or vacation rental can save you money. You may pay slightly more than a hotel room but you can cut costs by cooking some of your meals. For budget lodging check state parks or campgrounds for low-cost cabin rentals. Websites like AirBnB. com or VRBO also offer options for economic vacation rentals. Spend some time researching your options and look for any specials at your destination. Often resorts will offer a free night if you stay for a certain number of days.

Plan to eat breakfast at your lodging, have your big meal at lunch at a restaurant where lunch prices are less than dinner, bring back leftovers and supplement with other foods for an easy dinner. Purchasing local favorites or specialties makes a fun meal. Plan easy cookouts. You can also cook and freeze meals to bring with you. This allows the cook in the family to vacation without spending lots of time in the kitchen. For the car pack a snack box and a cooler with cold drinks. During the summer heat, beverages can quickly add up in costs if purchasing on the road.

For savings on lodging, some surprising places offer deals. Groupon is a go to for local deals, but did you know they offer travel deals as well?

Rakuten.com (formerly Ebates.com) offers cashback on hotels and vacations. A quick search revealed offers from 3 to 10 percent cashback on hotel websites, and discount sites like Expedia and TripAdvisor. You can double dip by going through Rakuten to access Groupon. You will get cashback on your Groupon discounted purchase—a win all around.

Also, when searching for lodging, check the pricing on different dates.

For example, in big cities with lots of business travel, rates are often more expensive during the week, and they offer specials on the weekend whereas a resort area is more costly on weekends than on weekdays.

Summer Cruise. A cruise is a more expensive endeavor, but if you are willing to wait until the last minute there are deals to be had. VacationsToGo. com is one of the best websites for discount travel.

Although prices may be the same on other sites, they often have onboard ship credits and other perks available only through VacationsToGo. The key to making a cruise a good deal is you must be able to drive to the port, and the ship needs to start and end at the same port. Last-minute airfare for a family of four defeats the cost savings of booking last minute. At the time this article was written, the site had many Alaska cruise deals out of Seattle and Vancouver for as much as 79 percent off. This deal offered a price of $749 (not including taxes) per person for an ocean-view cabin with a brochure price of $3,498—and also threw in a $175 per cabin onboard credit. The less expensive cabins sell first, so oftentimes last minute you can pick up a great deal on an ocean-view or balcony cabin. One offer was less than $400 (not including taxes) a person for a seven-day Alaskan cruise.

Once you are on your cruise you can save additional money by taking the time to plan your trip. Take advantage of all the things your cruise includes. Plan your shore excursions so that you eat all your meals on the ship. Shore excursions in Alaska are pricey, but by researching the ports of call you can save money. Many Alaskan ports are walkable. You can spend your time in port seeing quite a bit on your feet. One thing to be aware of if you book an excursion through the cruise line: They will make sure you are back or will wait for you if it is delayed when the ship

is due to depart. You do not have this guarantee when you book a shore excursion through another business.

When shopping look for unusual options for souvenirs to reduce your costs. In Sitka, the Russian Orthodox Church had a wonderful gift shop with very good prices; many under $10. When on the ship, look for deals that can save you money. Drinks can be pricey, but one cruise line offered a pub crawl through all the areas on the ship that served mixed drinks for not much more than the cost of one drink. At each stop you received a cocktail or shot themed for that stop. Some ships will offer wine tastings for a set price.

When planning a budget vacation, the Internet is your friend. Research, research, research. This is the key to finding great deals. Read forums on websites. Facebook has travel pages and groups for every interest. The website for your destination is also a wealth of information. Send away for free area guides. Do a web search for coupons for an attraction you want to visit. Use Groupon for the destination you are traveling to for discounts on food, activities and even spa treatments. If you are willing to put the work in beforehand, it will pay off by lowering the cost of your vacation.

Bringing awareness of veteran suicide

It’s a startling statistic. In June 2018, the Veterans Administration released its National Suicide Data Report that included figures from 2005 through 2015, and it’s disturbing to say the least.

The report concluded that among all military, active and retired, there are a total of 20.6 suicides every day. Of those, 16.8 were veterans and 3.8 were active-duty service members, guardsmen and reservists. This amounts to 6,132 veterans and 1,387 service members who died at their own hands in one year alone.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, PTSD afflicts almost 31 percent of Vietnam veterans, approximately 10 percent of Gulf War veterans and 11 percent of veterans of the war in Afghanistan. Sadly, not all these people receive the help they need.

So what can we do to help those who serve our country only to be plagued with PTSD and thoughts of suicide?

North Idaho Active Heroes, a 501(c)(3) organization whose goal is to end veteran suicide through providing events, seminars, peer mentors and other resources, is teaming up with Big Daddy's Bar and Grill this Father’s Day weekend to help raise awareness of the tragic number of veteran suicides happening in our country each day.

Fish for the Fallen will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16. With a family campout under the stars on the shores of the Kootenai River on Saturday night, and a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning followed by a free fishing derby on Sunday afternoon, there will be something for everyone! Trophies will be awarded for the first fish caught, the longest fish, the most fish caught and the smallest fish! There will be youth and adult divisions, and the event will include face painting, games, casting contests, food and cold drinks, and the camping is free of charge. What a better way to spend the Father’s Day weekend than bringing the family together for a weekend of fun while also raising funds and awareness for a great cause!
